When you are on a golfing vacation do you wonder what it would be like to live in the area you are visiting and play golf on the area’s courses? In 2012, while on my 50-week, 50-state driving golf tour of the U.S., I continually evaluated areas of the country as to livability and the number and quality of golf courses available in the area.
Panama’s Buenaventura Golf Course
by Tim Cotroneo
In 2012, Jack Nicklaus doubled down on the country of Panama. Not only would the Golden Bear wedge the Santa Maria Golf Course smack dab in the middle of downtown Panama City, he would concurrently design Buenaventura Golf Course amidst the palm trees, oceanfront, and prime real estate that is Panama’s south central coastline.
Four of the Best in Cape Province, South Africa

Pinnacle Point is about 20 minutes away from Gondwana Game Reserve. Superbly situated close to Mossel Bay on the edge of the magnificent coastline that signals the gateway to the Garden Route, Pinnacle Point epitomizes coastal luxury and exclusive living. This development, especially the golf course, will knock your socks off.

Major Upgrades Planned For Potomac Shores Golf Club Dumfries, Va. – Potomac Shores Golf Club, the award-winning Jack Nicklaus Signature design in Dumfries, Virginia, will begin major course upgrades in July 2018 that will improve grass and soil conditions as well as the overall guest experience. Troon’s
agronomy team will lead the project, which will be completed in two phases – re-grassing fairways and bunker renovations. Phase one of the course improvement project will begin in July and will focus on replacing the current bent grass fairways with Latitude 36 Bermudagrass. Latitude 36 Bermudagrass, a new variety of Bermudagrass developed at Oklahoma State University in recent years, thrives in the Mid-Atlantic region, has a high traffic tolerance and exceptional visual appeal. The course will temporarily close while the fairways are being re-grassed and will reopen on Labor Day weekend. Phase two will begin in mid-October and will center on bunker renovations. The golf course will remain open during the bunker renovation project, which is expected to be completed in December 2018. Throughout the on-course upgrades, Potomac Shores’ 8,000-square-foot clubhouse, which features function space, a restaurant and lounge, will remain open for regular business and will continue to host weddings and other social events. Potomac Shores Golf Club opened for daily-fee play in May of 2014. Upon opening in 2014, the Troon Golf-managed facility was named one of the “Best New Courses” in the U.S. by Golf Digest and GOLF Magazine and is currently ranked among the “Top Courses

built on key holes to further test the world’s best PGA TOUR professionals during the Sentry Tournament of Champions. “We look forward to the opportunity to restore many elements of the Plantation Course and implement a few ‘refinements’,” said Bill Coore. “It’s like when you have a special piece of art, or something really special to you, and you get a chance to dust if off and make it new again. This will be a very thoughtful restoration and refining process, but it’s not a redesign. We are very happy with the way the course looks and the way it has gone through the past nearly three decades.” In addition to the Plantation Course enhancements during 2019, Kapalua will begin three other significant projects this summer (2018), including: Upgrading/renovating the Plantation Golf Shop Relocate the Bay Course Operations and Golf Shop to the Village Center, providing an even better “sense of arrival” for guests playing the Bay Course Redesign and modernize the Kapalua Golf Academy practice facility “We are confident that these numerous enhancements will continue to strengthen
the Plantation Course’s position as the top golf course in Hawaii and support further upward progression in Top 100 rankings,” said Alex Nakajima, general manager, Kapalua Golf & Tennis. “All of our upcoming enhancements are geared toward improving the overall golf experience for our guests, while also ensuring the Sentry Tournament of Champions remains a top stop on the PGA TOUR. We’ll be excited to show off the newly refined Plantation Course to those playing in the tournament in January of 2020.” For more information on Kapalua Golf, visit www.GolfAtKapalua.com or call 1-877-KAPALUA.

Rio Verde Country Club & Community In Midst Of A Renaissance Rio Verde, AZ– The Rio Verde Country Club and Community are in the midst of a renaissance. As one of the first golf developments thoughtfully placed between the eastern foothills of the McDowell Mountains and the Tonto National Forest, it has attracted golf and nature lovers for the last 46 years. But recently, this former slice of desert ranchland is thriving with renewed energy. More than 100 new members have joined since Troon Privé, the private club operating
division of Troon, was hired to manage the club in mid-2016, and the Net Promoter Score (NPS) has nearly doubled. An annual measurement of member willingness to recommend the club to others, the higher NPS scores can be attributed to many factors, including: Troon’s agronomy team implementing strict agronomical practices to provide members with consistent and quality course conditions Service levels improving through increased staff training Improved food and beverage options, including dine-in, carry out or staff delivery An increase in member programs with new experience nights and special events Enhanced communication through a new club website and member portal and other digital messaging “It’s amazing the improvements we’ve seen and continue to see here at Rio Verde,” said Dave Ulm, general manager, Rio Verde Country Club. “Our members are engaged and excited about the future of this club. There’s a whole new buzz about the lifestyle available here at Rio Verde.” With Full Membership no longer limited to those who live in the community, Rio Verde members enjoy unlimited access to dining and events, 36-holes of parklandstyle golf, a driving range, three putting greens, bunker/chipping complex, tennis, pickleball, swimming, fitness, bocce, and dozens of special interest clubs. There are no food and beverage minimums or trail fees (non-residents don’t pay to use the club’s carts), and Full Members also receive preferred access and rates to more than 270 private, resort and daily fee clubs around the world through Troon. Troon Privé Privilege offers tee times at participating Troon Privémanaged private clubs for just $35 to $55 per round. Troon Advantage provides tee times at participating Troon Golf-managed resort and daily-fee clubs at a rate guaranteed to be 15% off the lowest published price. Day Pass access to other amenities such as fitness, spa, tennis, pickleball and more is also available through both programs. Earlier this year, members approved a multi-million dollar, member-funded renovation project on the existing 27,000 square-foot clubhouse, with work expected to begin this summer on dining venues, common areas and the golf shop. A grand re-opening of the clubhouse is expected in December 2018. The Troon Privé Division currently manages more than 80 private clubs, half of which are member owned. hen you are on a golfing vacation do you wonder what it would be like to live in the area you are visiting and play golf on the area’s courses? In 2012, while on my 50-week, 50-state driving golf tour of the U.S., I continually evaluated areas of the country as to livability and the number and quality of golf courses available in the area. Although I had no plans on moving from my home in Vista, California, some thirty five miles north of San Diego, when I discovered Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, a gated community one hour West of Little Rock with nine golf courses and only 14,000 residents, it perked my interest. I was interested because it met my definition of a golfer’s paradise...year-round golf, low cost of living, friendly residents and plenty to do when not golfing. I was intrigued by Arkansas and Hot Springs Village. Having lived my entire life in heavily populated areas around San Diego and San Francisco, I wanted to learn more about living in small rural community and wanted to experience a four season climate. During two return trips to the village in order to check out its four seasons and to learn more the community, I learned that by my definition, Hot Springs Village was truly a golfer’s paradise. I decided to make a major change in my life and I moved to Hot Springs Village. All nine courses in the village are no more than twenty minutes from each other, and less than onehalf hour from anywhere in the village. All are in the village’s 26,000-acre forest of hardwoods and pines in Arcadia Bluffs The Lodge the rolling hills of the Quachita mountain range. DeSoto – 18-hole championship length that features Bermuda Greens. Opened in 1972, it was the first course in Hot Springs Village. Besides its sloping fairways and greens, it is known for its three finishing holes, the Par 5 16th, the Par 4 17th and the Par 5 18th. Its five sets of tees range from 4635 to 6687 yards. Diamante - A private 18-hole championship length course. It was the site for four years of various PGA Tour satellite tournaments including several Nationwide tournaments. Opened in 1995, it was ranked by Golf Digest as the No. 1 golf course in Arkansas for four years running. It stretches out to 7560 yards from the longest of its seven tees.
Other than the excellent courses, additional things that add to the feeling that Hot Springs Village is “A Golfer’s Paradise” are: Extremely reasonable golf and rental housing, and a variety of homes with forest, lake or golf course views at prices that are considerably under similar homes in other areas of the country. Activities a-plenty in addition to golf. Hot Springs Village has over 160 clubs and organizations that offer a myriad of things to do no matter what a person’s interest and/or hobbies might be.
Granada- 18-hole championship length with five sets of tees ranging from 5014 to 7115 yards. It is noted as a scenic course with impressive views. The Par 4 18th hole, which has a meandering waterfall that flows the length of the fairway from green to tee, is the course’s signature hole.
Recreational opportunities for non-golfing days. Eleven lakes for boating, kayaking, swimming and fishing. Three beaches; over 20 miles of natural trails for hiking and bicycling; tennis, pickleball, bocce ball, lawn bowling and basketball courts; a large fitness center with an in-door pool; and a 654-seat state-of-the-art auditorium where Broadway-quality plays and concerts are enjoyed at very inexpensive ticket prices.
Isabella – A 27-hole championship length layout with three nine-hole rotations, Nina, Pinta and Santa Maria. Opened in 2000, it was ranked the No. 1 course in Arkansas from 2002-2006 by Golf Digest and the Arkansas Business Journal.
Restaurants offering both casual and white table cloth dining. Friendly residents from all fifty states and several foreign countries. All its residents have moved to Hot Springs Village because they wanted to enjoy the village’s relaxed yet active lifestyle.
Magellan - At 4877 to 6494 yards, Magellan is the shortest of the eight 18-hole championship length courses in Hot Springs Village. Like DeSoto, it is known for its fast but true Bermuda Greens. Opened originally as a three-hole golf school, it is considered to have one of the best practice facilities in the community with a large driving range, extensive putting green and several areas for short game and sand bunker practice.
If you are interested in playing golf on one or all of Hot Springs Village’s excellent golf courses, or are interested in finding an area for a great golf vacation, or are looking for a community to move to, plan a visit to Hot Springs Village.
Ponce de Leon– On its opening day in 1991, PGA Pro John Daly boomed his drives long and straight on this 18-hole championship length course. Ponce as it is known, has numerous dog legs, elevated greens, and great pizza served in Mulligans, its casual restaurant. Ponce is a favorite of both low and high handicap golfers.

n 2012, Jack Nicklaus doubled down on the country of Panama. Not only would the Golden Bear wedge the Santa Maria Golf Course smack dab in the middle of downtown Panama City, he would concurrently design Buenaventura Golf Course amidst the palm trees, oceanfront, and prime real estate that is Panama’s south central coastline. Drive two hours east of Panama City and you’ll find pristine Buenaventura Golf Course, located in the Rio Hato countryside, just a half mile from the Pacific Ocean. The quaint hamlet of Rio Hato is a beach, tourist, and second home escape with a mere 15,000 residents. Buenaventura’s serene surroundings are a tranquil contrast to Panama City’s urban oasis in terms of setting, ambiance, and pace. Nicklaus, long an admirer of blending history with cutting-edge design, found a horse stable on the 900 acres destined to become Buenaventura Golf Course. Rather than deny the area’s early beginnings, Nicklaus embraced them. This reference to yesterday is evident atop Buenaventura’s western-style clubhouse as a replica of a Peruvian horse is stationed under the entrance’s A-frame peak. 360-Degree Golf Technology is Your Good Luck Buenaventura translates to “good luck” in Spanish. For golfers who choose to play and stay at the Buenaventura Golf and Beach Resort, their
24 Golf Vacations • April 2018
good luck skyrockets upon learning that the golf course is the only one in Central America to offer a Cobra Performance Center on its property. From a golf instruction and fitting standpoint, the Performance Center’s Cobra Gears expertise sheds a 360-degree light on what your body, grip, shaft, and head are doing. The bonus is that you’re experiencing breakthrough golf technology in a paradise-like setting. When you do step up to Buenaventura’s first tee, the course’s fresh air atmosphere reminds that you’re playing on the quiet side of Panama. As you prepare to drive your first morning tee shot that silence is temporarily interrupted as a rooster trumpets a welcoming call from the farm located to the north. As you tackle the front nine, you’ll discover classic Nicklaus touches. The Paspalum fairways are clipped to perfection, the bunkers are plentiful, and the greens feature more undulations than a Panama hat turned sideways. Branching Out on 100 Years of Stories Another natural historical touch threading throughout Buenaventura’s 7300-yards are the massive 100-year-old Corotu trees found on the property. With their rounded canopies, the trees come in to play mostly on the back nine. The Corotu located between the clubhouse and
www.golfvacationsmag.com
driving range practically begs you to ask what this wonderful plot of land was like when the tree was a mere sapling. Another bonus to playing Buenaventura is rubbing elbows with their cordial staff. The Buenaventura team touts resumes that spread well beyond Central America and the Caribbean. Director of Golf Miguel Marin Casero attended Coastal Carolina University at the same time as Dustin Johnson. PGA Professional/Operations Manager Heath Henrich not only played college golf against Luke Donald, he has a wealth of stories from his days working the top Dominican Republic courses, as well as a Masters jacket tale involving fellow Iowa native Zach Johnson. The momentum of the back nine culminates on the Par 3, 154-yard 17th hole. This postcard setting is arguably Buenaventura’s signature hole. With water shimmering on the right and palm trees framing the putting green, the image of this beauty belongs in a Nicklaus coffee-table book. Life’s a Breeze on The Quiet Side of Panama Upon approaching the 18th green you catch a glimpse of the towering Corotu waving from behind the lake that flanks the Par

5, 473-yard finisher. In the warmth of the day, you breathe in the tradewinds that kick in around 11:00 in the morning, just as they did every day before that. The breeze, the Corotu, and Nicklaus’ masterful design make you grateful for trekking 75 miles from Panama City’s International Airport to picturesque Buenaventura. After your round, you head over to the Buenaventura Resort to indulge in their luxurious surroundings and say “Muchos Gracias” to Jack for doubling down in Panama. It was indeed your “good luck” to play championship golf on the “quiet side” of Panama. In fact, Peruvian horses couldn’t keep you from coming back to Buenaventura Golf Course. http://buenaventuragolfclub.com/course http://www.buenaventuragolfclub.com/golf/proto/ buenaventuragolfclub/performance_center/performance_center.htm http://www.thebuenaventurahotel.com

Steenberg Mountain. It is, without doubt, the ultimate Cape experience. This luxurious estate is designated as a National Monument and is the oldest wine farm in the Cape Peninsula. The scenery is breathtaking and its championship golf course is outstanding. Steenberg offers the elegant and exclusive Bistro 1652 and Catharina’s Restaurant, a producing wine cellar, and all the facilities of a top-class country hotel, yours to enjoy at whatever pace you choose. This stunning boutique hotel is a haven of serenity with a choice of 30 elegant, air-conditioned rooms, the best being the contemporary design rooms, rather than those more chintz-clad—housed in the original manor house, barn and jonkershuis (house of the eldest son). Each en-suite room is tastefully furnished with exquisite antiques and all rooms overlook the vineyards, golf course or manicured gardens. These beautifully renovated white-walled Cape Dutch buildings are grouped around a large manicured grass courtyard. Amenities include an on-site hairstylist and beauty consultant and a gymnasium. Guests can shed their cares and surrender themselves to the upper level quality of personal service, unique to a small luxury hotel. The Steenberg golf course is a wonderful golfing experience and is well known for its hybrid design by renowned South African golf course architect, Pete Matkovitch. Opened in 1995, the course attracts golfers wanting a total golfing experience. Tradition is represented by aprons of bent grass around the greens that allow for the bump and run—a shot rarely seen in South Africa, where robust kikuyu grass usually takes this option off the table. The radical hybrid change instituted comes in the shape of sand- and water-protected island greens and waste areas (a la Pete Dye?) hugging entire fairways.

Almost every golf course in the world can be loaded into the electronic scorecard on the app that is available for iPhone and Android devices, and the app is free with paid add-ons that can enhance the experience. It can also keep your statistics to be used later for game

improvement, such as fairways hit, greens, putts, short-game and slice/hook scoring. It can also give you real time scoring and betting information if you are competing with friends. The app also allows you to quickly post to your USGA handicap and features no-touch GPS at a glance and a “Beer Me” button to order from the beverage cart at your favorite course. Coming later this year is voice-input scoring and a live leaderboard for larger competitions. The 80BREAKR™ golf app is FREE and is chock-full of benefits! It features GPS distance to the center of the green, automatic and real-time calculation of skins, Nassau, and skills games, and a handicap service that posts automatically. “We are very excited to get all these improvements into the 80BREAKR™ app over a couple of official releases,” said Thomas Stewart, President and Developer of the 80BREAKR golf app. “We are surprised by the high adoption rate of the 80BREAKR™ app by golfers so early in the season, as well as by golf courses looking to boost revenue and profit for 2018.” Stewart is a mechanical engineer with 24 U.S. patents for high-end computer design across three high-tech Silicon Valley companies. He’s led teams of engineers to deliver high-quality computer designs on time and on schedule. The 80BREAKR app was born out of frustration with other apps and a desire to finally break 80 for an 18-hole round--and he used his engineering design skills to create the best golf scorecard app. A perfectionist, Stewart is looking for constant improvement with the app and now has a GPS flyover of every hole that shows the hole’s graphics and has a shot-distance tool. Fewer buttons and inputs are his goal with each upgrade of the program, and a onetime sign-in for every device is part of the latest version. Finally, 80BREAKR is releasing an update that keeps your scorecards seamlessly and securely on their server. This is very convenient for golfers who can use their phone one day to keep score, an iPad or tablet the next, then go back to their phone after that. All the while, all scorecards are accessible from any device. To learn more and for the free download visit: www.80breakr.com

F
inding time to eat while juggling travel, work and golf schedules can be daunting in our every-more hectic world. A new solution to this dilemma, however, is even being tested on the PGA Tour and European Tours by one of its veteran stars—Ian Poulter—a star of recent European Ryder Cup teams who won just recently at the Houston Open. A new, instant meal called mēle (pronounced meal) is being
32 Golf Vacations • April 2018
use by Poulter and is available world-wide to the public. mēle is a whole-food based, powder smoothie mix that is a perfectly balanced macro meal. This means you get the recommended fat to carb to protein ratio of eating a whole food meal, the ingredients are simply dried and in powder form and taste good. It’s a new take on meal replacement to focus on whole-food nutrition in drink form. No longer do you have to drink smoothies loaded with sugar and carbs that leave you hungry later for other on-the-go healthy snacks. It also makes for a great travel companion to keep you healthy on long flights and on the road when you need a quick fix. Statistically, 53% of Americans skip breakfast at least once per week. Each mēle comes in a 4.5 Oz packet that can be carried in a travel or golf back very easily and can be mixed in under 30 seconds in a blending bottle. The ingredients primarily come from whole fruits, vegetables and grass-fed whey. The fruits and vegetables are freeze dried and/ or crushed to retain all their naturally occurring vitamins and minerals. All you must do is mix with water, or your favorite kind of milk for a quick meal. Only grass-fed organic whey is used in mēle. Whey protein isolate contains 90% protein and is absorbed in the body better than any other source of protein—including eggs, chicken, beef and fish. This natural food replacement is quite tasty and fills you up for a good period of the day without giving you a bloated or over stuffed feeling. Thus far, mēle comes in three flavors—raw berry, super green and cocoa-nut. For more details on mēle, visit: www.meleshake.com.
