Get Outside and Play Golf

While the Situation is Fluid, the Game Continues to Pass Social Distancing Guidelines

W

hile the Situation is Fluid, the Game Continues to Pass Social Distancing Guidelines In the face of the novel COVID-19, golf has shown the world just how innovative and resilient it can be. From riding single in carts and not touching flagsticks, to smoothing bunkers with shoes and mobile check-in and payment, the industry reacted swiftly and effectively. While the situation is fluid and changes hourly, the game continues to pass social distancing and cleanliness guidelines with flying colors. Walking nine or 18 holes is the safest way to enjoy a round of golf in the coming weeks while burning between 500 and 1,000 calories in the process. Walker Trolleys recently introduced its new Cape Model pushcart available for pre-order with delivery targeted for spring. The engineering behind Walker Trolleys pushcarts is sophisticated, belying its outwardly streamlined, minimalist appearance. However, the mission is simple: make walking golf cool, again.

8 Golf Vacations • April 2020

“The game is so pure when you’re walking, you take the time to really see the golf course from tee to green and appreciate the architecture and strategy behind it,” says Walker Trolleys founder and CEO Brad Payne. “And then there’s the health and wellness aspect. Walking with a push cart can burn up to 1,000 calories over 18 holes and lead to better scores versus carrying.” Payne, formerly with Apple, debuted Walker Trolleys at the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, back in January. Through social media and wordof-mouth, he, his wife Julie and principal designer Bryce Gibson generated enough buzz to catch Golf Channel’s attention. The Walker Trolley was featured on the channel’s popular “Morning Drive” as one of the PGA Show’s best products of opening day. Media and PGA Professionals in attendance were duly impressed with the push cart’s high-end look and feel. Premium materials – including aluminum, waxed canvas and handcrafted leather – create a unique, elegant appearance that wouldn’t be

out of place on the great links courses of Scotland during the time of Old and Young Tom Morris. A convenient one-fold handle makes collapsing and unfolding the trolley easier than any other push cart on the market. The patent pending central hub enables the handle and legs to bend on two separate axes, allowing for a compact fold. The storage unit, made of waterresistant waxed canvas, provides an endless number of ways for golfers to customize their trolley and the company is working with a well-known soft goods company to realize these designs. Payne says a non-folding line of Walker Trolleys made with the same materials will be offered directly to courses, clubs and resorts as a rental option. The push carts nest for easy and quick storage in units and premium soft good options can be customized with logos and other branding elements. For more information about Walker Trolleys, and to join the Walking Golf Movement, visit www.walkertrolleys.com.

Princeville Makai Golf Club Says Aloha/ Goodbye To Plastic Water Bottles Kauai, Hawaii – Princeville Makai Golf Club, located on the North Shore of Kauai, recently said “aloha” or goodbye to singleuse plastic water bottles. Princeville Makai did so to help reduce plastic pollution in the world’s oceans, fight the negative impacts plastic pollution causes on wildlife, and to cut landfill inputs. Water served in plastic bottles will no longer be available at the Makai Grill and on beverage carts, while beer and soda will be served in infinitely recyclable aluminum cans. Princeville Makai estimates that the club and guests were using approximately 100,000 plastic bottles each year. Princeville Makai currently has two FloWater refill stations on property and additional water stations throughout the golf course. While on property, Princeville Makai guests have multiple alternatives to purchasing water in plastic bottles, including: • Bring their own vessel to fill with water • Use a complimentary paper cup (produced from recycled materials) • Purchase a Pathwater aluminum bottle for $3 per bottle – Pathwater’s tag line is “refill not landfill” • Purchase Yeti or Corksicle aluminum vessel products from the golf shop For more information on Princeville Makai Golf Club, visit www.makaigolf.com. S

ince his playing days, and certainly beyond that, Jack Nicklaus has been one of golf’s greatest ambassadors.

He’s never shied away from giving takes on what’s right and wrong with golf – from golf equipment to growing the game to Tiger Woods’ journey of surpassing Jack’s 18 major titles. During this COVID-19 crisis, the “Golden Bear” also has been active delivering the social distancing message. He’s appeared on social media, on radio shows and other medium promoting staying at home and being safe around others, especially seniors.

Cordillera Ranch Located just northwest of San Antonio in the sleepy town of Boerne, Cordillera Ranch boasts a Nicklaus Signature Golf Course that has earned plenty of fanfare since it opened in 2006. National Golf Course of the Year, consistently ranks among the top-10 courses in Texas, features one of the best and most beautiful holes in the state. Earlier last year, the golf course got another distinction.

Everyone should be heeding his and every other health official’s advice to quarantine themselves at home and practicing social distancing if they must go out for essential items. That way once normalcy returns, all golfers can resume playing their favorite layouts and discovering new ones to enjoy.

This past January, Cordillera Ranch became the first course in the Lone Star State to grass all its greens with Pure Distinction bentgrass. Developed 15 years ago, Pure Distinction is fast becoming the premier strain, offering the exceptional roll unique to bentgrass, enhanced traits that tolerate heat, humidity and disease more effectively, and a density so tight it mitigates encroachment from other aggressive and unwanted grasses such as poa annua.

Nicklaus has created some of the best golf courses on the planet – both private and public. Once this Coronavirus pandemic ends, these Jack Nicklaus designs will be waiting for your (likely rusty) golf game. Make it a point to befriend a member of these private layouts or visit these exotic locales where his best public layouts are located.

Other elite private clubs with Pure Distinction putting surfaces include major championship venue Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa and Essex Golf and Country Club in Canada, often considered one of the top-100 courses in the world.

The greens will surely wow you, as will the par-3 16th, the signature hole at Cordillera Ranch. Beautiful and “Bear”ly touched by Nicklaus, No. 16 features an elevated green bordered by natural waterfalls and a 40-foot-deep canyon. www.cordilleraranch.com Desert Highlands Since its inception in 1983, Desert Highlands has set the standard by which all other private golf communities in Scottsdale are measured. Spanning 850 acres, Desert Highlands majestically melds Sonoran Desert luxury living with world-class amenities. The community’s calling card is its Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course, which inspired championship golf in Scottsdale. Stretching to over 7,100 yards, this splendid layout offers a challenging, but fair test, and striking views of Pinnacle Peak and the lights of the Valley spread across the horizon in the distance below. Nicklaus, Gary Player, Arnold Palmer and Tom Watson have walked these fairways, as it was host site of the first Skins Game in 1983. The club and community recently invested $7 million into improvements to its golf course, which included renovating every bunker, restoring the 13th hole to its original design, installing a new irrigation system and updating cart paths. www.deserthighlandsscottsdale.com PGA National - Champion Course

Ocean Course at Hokuala The only Nicklaus Signature Design on the majestic island of Kauai, the Ocean Course at Hokuala boasts the longest continuous stretch of oceanfront golf in Hawaii. Not surprisingly, MSN Travel named the Ocean Course one of the world’s 12 most beautiful courses. That’s not the only award bestowed to the Ocean Course – the list of accolades is as long as its stretch of holes that overlook Nawiliwili Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Golfweek, GOLF Magazine, Travel & Leisure Golf and World Golf Awards are among the many media outlets touting the Ocean Course among the top courses in Hawaii and nationwide. Conveniently located next to Lihue Airport, Timbers Kaua‘i and Marriott Kaua‘i Resort, the Ocean Course was renovated in 2017 with world-class TifEagle greens, bright white silica sand bunkers, innovative visual aesthetics, an expanded driving range, new Golfboards and many other enhancements. Hokuala translates to mean “Rising Star.” In such a unique setting where the ocean meets the land, this is as good as it gets on the “Garden Isle.” www.hokualakauai.com PGA National – Champion Course While it may not be a Nicklaus Signature Design or even

an original design by Jack, The Champion Course at PGA National Resort & Spa might be his most masterful redesign. Opened in 1981 and originally designed by Fazio brothers, George and Tom, the Champion Course was the site of the 1983 Ryder Cup, the 1987 PGA Championship and the Senior PGA Championship for 19 years, from 1982–2000. Today, PGA National is the site of the PGA TOUR’s Honda Classic since 2007 and home to the legendary “Bear Trap” – hole Nos. 15 through 17 on its Champion Course that USA TODAY hails as “one of the toughest stretches in golf.” In addition to the Bear Trap, immaculate conditions and a challenging layout make the Champion Course a favorite among Tour pros and amateurs. Its most recent renovations came in 2018 when Nicklaus Design removed the Palmetto palms on the right side of No. 1 and left side of No. 9 and green complexes were re-built, shaped and grassed with TifEagle bermudagrass. www.pgaresort.com Sailfish Point Situated on South Florida’s Hutchinson Island, this luxury community is home to a par-72, 7,088-yard Nicklaus Signature Design that offers water views on nearly every hole. Case in point: the finishing hole, a striking par-4 dubbed “Window on

the Sea” for its remarkable ocean view.

Sailfish Point

The immaculate views, along with the shotmaking demands and fair challenge have attracted many to join Sailfish Point. These features also have placed Sailfish Point on prominent “Best of” lists. Golfweek annually tabs Sailfish Point among the top residential courses in the country, while others have tabbed it among the premier layouts in the Sunshine State. Nicklaus originally designed Sailfish Point in 1981, and revamped the course in 2007. Wheels are in motion for Nicklaus Design to spearhead another renovation project beginning later this year. It remains to be seen if this project will continue its current timeline. Sailfish Point is less than a two-hour drive from both the Orlando and Miami areas, so it’s easy to get to from any major airport. www.sailfishpoint.com

That also pertains to the Palmetto State’s storied Lowcountry region, including Hilton Head, also known as “Golf Island.” Whether the RBC Heritage plays on, is cancelled or postponed, Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort await traveling golfers from points north and south. From exclusive private courses and high-end resorts to mustplay mid-tier daily fee layouts, the region is rife with golf options. It’s easy to unearth the wildly popular tracks, like Harbour Town and the Robert Trent Jones Course at Palmetto Dunes. But dig a little deeper, call in a few favors or even pony up for a membership to go private, and golfers will discover a hidden side of Hilton Head golf to be fully explored and treasured.

May River Golf Club, Montage Palmetto Bluff Located just off the island in idyllic Bluffton and originally opened in 2004, May River Golf Club has developed a reputation as of one of Jack Nicklaus’ finest designs. The Golden Bear returned in 2017 to restore the Signature layout to its first-class form. Nicklaus’ deft delineation between formal and native bunkers adds a unique design element architecture aficionados will appreciate. The layout meanders around the May River and coastal wetlands of Palmetto Bluff, and caddies educate golfers on optimal angles and club selection. Golfers can bed-down at the Montage Palmetto Bluff set within 20,000 acres of Palmetto Bluff’s maritime forest and surrounded by 32 miles of riverfront. The boutique features three pools, eight restaurants, a spa and a seemingly endless array of activities. The Club Course, Sea Pines CC Sea Pines Country Club’s Club Course is a pure example of Lowcountry golf course design, with its narrow, tree-lined

fairways, doglegs, subtle green complexes and languid lagoons. There’s a since of intrigue on every tee box of this Arnold Palmer-designed layout as to what style of hole comes next. A private, invitation only club situated in Sea Pines Plantation, members are not required to live inside the gates to join. The club sets up perfectly for those relocating to Hilton Head or east Bluffton who want freedom of residential choice. As the saying goes, every Hilton Head visitor is a future resident, and every resident a future golfer. The Club Course, updated by Clyde Johnston in 2001, has even been referred to as “Little Harbour Town” due to its similarities to the Pete Dye, Jack Nicklaus masterpiece just a sand wedge to the south. Apropos, given that original architect Palmer won the inaugural RBC Heritage in 1969 and incorporated many of Harbour Town’s design elements. www.golfvacationsmag.com

Old South Golf Links, Bluffton Also designed by Johnston, Old South Golf Links is the only area public course playing along the Intracoastal Waterway. The front and back nine views, with McKay’s Creek and the Calibogue Sound in the distance, are among the best in the region, public and private venues considered. The variety of Lowcountry terrain is also fascinating – oak forest, pastures and tidal marshes are all on display, and in play. The finishing stretch, holes 16 through 18, is vintage Lowcountry with target fairways and greens requiring carries over marshland. Golf packages are offered with other area courses. One round at Old South and golfers will appreciate Johnston’s brilliant routing and subtle approach to Lowcountry golf course design. Golf Vacations • April 2020 23

Sea Pines Country Club

Atlantic Dunes, The Sea Pines Resort Having opened in 2016, Atlantic Dunes is the newest course at The Sea Pines Resort, wrought from what was once the oldest course on Hilton Head Island. Originally the Ocean Course, Davis Love III, brother Mark and lead architect Scot Sherman completely overhauled the layout to present a pure coastal aesthetic. Love Golf Design removed hundreds of aging trees (all environmentally approved), restored natural dune lines and added coquina shells and native seaside grasses. The par-3 15th hole is one of just two holes on the island with an unencumbered view of the Atlantic Ocean. Oyster Reef When Oyster Reef Golf Club on Hilton Head Island opened in 1982, it was recognized by many golf experts as one of the best new courses in the U.S., because of its fortunate location, a marquee designer in Rees Jones and a strategically compelling layout. Playing to more than 7,000 yards with a 139 slope rating from the tips, Oyster Reef continues to be a place where golfers go to look for a challenge, as well as one of the most visually appealing courses in the entire region. Getting There Golfers have two airport options, Savannah Hilton Head International Airport (SAV), or Hilton Head Airport (HHH) on the north end of the island. Service was once limited to HHH, but has been exponentially expanded with direct flights on Delta, American and United from nine major cities.

Mountain Golf Offers an Escape:

A Visceral Connection to the Game We Love 26 Golf Vacations • April 2020

or golfers, there’s always been an allure to mountain golf. In the Carolinas, Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, Charleston and the Brunswick Islands have more than their fair share of outstanding layouts. And the central Piedmont of both states surprises with some real hidden gems. But there’s something special about packing up the SUV full of gear and heading into Carolinas’ stunning section of Blue Ridge Mountains. Maybe it’s the cooler weather in the late spring and summer. In the fall, it is all about the colorful foliage and playing golf in a sweater or fleece pullover. For most golfers, though, the connection is more visceral than the weather. Mountain golf is a way to escape the pace and stress of today’s hurry-up, always-on lifestyle. As of this writing, amid the spread of the novel Coronavirus, it is a respite from the barrage of news, updates and closings. Then there’s the sheer exhilaration. Downhill tees shots that seem to hang in the air for hours before dropping to a tightly mown landing area or green. Bending doglegs lead into tree-lined corridors full of natural (deer, anyone?) and manmade (bunkers, everyone) surprises.

Bald Mountain Golf Course #17

Ah, and those pesky uphill approach shots to green complexes unknown, we even love those in moderation. Of course when it comes to mountain golf, we’d all be whistling Dixie if we didn’t cop to the sheer joy of adding more distance to each of our clubs, especially the driver. TIPS FOR PLAYING AT ALTITUDE First, a few tips about playing “at elevation.” As a general rule, the distance gain above sea level is calculated by multiplying the elevation (in feet) by .00116. While the math may seem complicated, a 250-yard drive at sea level would go approximately 10% farther at 8,000 feet. That doesn’t account for slope (uphill or downhill), temperature, wind speed and direction, and humidity. Throw in such golfer-specific variables as ball velocity, trajectory and spin rate, and coming to a true yardage can prove challenging even for the game’s most skilled tacticians.

PLAYING AT ALTITUDE

Apple Valley Hole #8

Simply put, the higher the elevation, the thinner the air. And less resistance means more distance. Where to Elevate Your Game in the Carolinas Adam Bowles, Head of Golf Operations at Rumbling Bald, is quick to point out that the resort’s two mountain courses, Apple Valley and Bald Mountain, are set at just over 1,200 feet above sea level. But rather than the impact of elevation on distance, Bowles says the key to playing Bald Mountain, especially, is understanding the effects of uphill and downhills slopes. Longtime Laurel of Asheville golf writer Chuck Werle once said Bald Mountain designer W.B. Lewis was “part man, part mountain goat.” “Bald Mountain is what most golfers would refer to as a classic mountain course,” says Bowles. “The back nine especially offers a mix of uphill and downhill holes that require adjustments in club selection, trajectory and spin.” 28 Golf Vacations • April 2020

One case in point being the par-4 11 hole. The uphill approach shot is the most extreme on the course and can easily call for an extra club or two, depending on the wind speed and direction. Apple Valley, on the other hand, is more of a traditional design that just happens to be routed through jaw-dropping mountain scenery. In fact, architect Dan Maples estimates that up 75% of all shots on the longer of the two layouts are either level or downhill. “You get the best of both worlds on Apple Valley and that’s what keeps golfers coming back and new golfers coming in for the first time,” Bowles says. One of the most sought-after mountain rounds in North Carolina is the storied Linville Golf Club. The classic layout is considered one of Donald Ross’s best, which he handcrafted around the existing land forms. The course is made available for guests of The Eseeola Lodge. www.golfvacationsmag.com

Spring golf packages start at $350 per person, based on double occupancy. Linville is about 1.5 hours north of Rumbling Bald via Highway 221 through the heart of the mountains.

only true stay-and-play destinations. Cottages conveniently situated across from the event center are ideal (and affordable) for golf packages starting at $130 per golfer (not including tax) during the shoulder season.

Just a chip shot away in the vibrant college town of Boone, home of Appalachian State, the Boone Golf Club course was designed by Ross’s protégé, Ellis Maples (father of Dan). Like Linville Golf Club, the season runs from April to November, and the course is known for its sublime conditioning and playability.

The mountain-style layout is widely regarded at one of P.B. Dye’s best designs. Unlike overly penal Dye courses, the layout requires few forced carries, and green surrounds are down-right playable. And golfers expecting dormant Bermuda grass will be pleasantly surprised to find a lush rye grass overseed through April.

Heading back south to Travelers Rest, S.C., Cherokee Valley Course and Club’s motto is “expect the unexpected.” From music wafting across the practice range, Sun Mountain Finn Cycles for rent at the golf shop and an array of local craft beers on tap, this is golf’s future, right now. Cherokee Valley is also one of Upstate South Carolina’s

amkin, the 95-year-old golf grip company in San Diego, has introduced some of the most advanced technology in new materials for the part of the golf club that is most personal. Having a grip that feels right to each individual touch and helps promote the proper fundamentals and hand action is vital for any player wanting to get the most out of their equipment, and Lamkin has made some remarkable strides in those areas with its new ST (Smooth Tack) and Calibrate Technology. The pioneering ST line includes the ST+2 Hybrid and ST+2 Hybrid Calibrate grips. The Sonar+ Wrap Calibrate is the first Lamkin wrap grip to incorporate reminder technology. It is the perfect solution for players seeking the style and feel of a wrap, but the performance benefits of a reminder grip. In addition to Calibrate, the grip benefits from Lamkin’s Genesis Material and Fingerprint Technology, which adds a consistent micro-texture surface pattern for slip-resistant control and omni-directional traction. Calibrate Technology further enhances Sonar Tour’s reputation as a grip for those who place a premium on shot-making. With Calibrate we saw an opportunity to vastly improve the reminder / ribbed grip category, and it is without doubt a substantial advancement over what is currently on the market not only in performance but also in ease of installation.” These grips are available at select golf retailers and on-line at: www.LamkinGrips.com

ootJoy has taken its most popular shoe—the Pro/SL™--and made its shoe model worn by more tour players than any other more stable and comfortable with some notable improvements. Besides additional padding in some key areas to improve comfort, Footjoy has developed an all-new Infinity outsole configuration that provides better traction and grip with 189 traction points that provide a solid foundation for the golf swing. The heel is wider than previous models by more than 11 percent and the forefoot stability has been improved to provide a solid base and keep stability with the ground to a maximum. The Pro/SL features a Dual-Density (D2) Midsole that offers both stability and cushioning, the advanced design utilizes two densities of proprietary FineTuned Foam (FTF): a firm FTF around the perimeter for support and control, and a softer FTF under the foot for maximum cushioning and comfort. The soft, waterproof leather feels easy on the feet while the Power Harness hugs your feet and provides outstanding medial/lateral control and support. “As the industry leader, we didn’t tweak or adjust the new Pro | SL, we innovated and advanced and received Tour approval,” said Richard Fryer, Director of Product Management, FJ Footwear. “As a result, we’ve developed a product that delivers more stability, more traction, more comfort and more choice, setting the standard in performance footwear, again”.

SWEETSTUFF by Terry Ross

In addition to the new features in the improved Pro/SL, FootJoy also introduced a complete additional option for this line with the new Pro/SL™ Carbon that integrates a full-length carbon fiber insert into the midsole of the shoe for even more stability and motion control. Carbon fiber flexes and elastically snaps back to its molded position with each step recovering more of the energy generated while walking and allowing the body to work less. This will result in less leg and foot fatigue at the end of the round noted FJ officials. This shoe provides even more padding in a classy looking design that offers enhanced wrap-around comfort and no-slip fit with a soft, molded collar and conforming underfoot cushioning with an OrthoLite® Impressions FitBed®. All of this in a shoe that is even lighter and more comfortable featuring Chromoskin™ leather by Pittards™. The shoe is already getting the attention of some top Tour players who are wearing it: “I’m someone who loves to be comfortable, and the new Pro/SL is the most comfortable golf shoe I’ve ever put on my feet,” said Louis Oosthuizen. “When I tried Carbon for the first time, I wanted to put them in play immediately,” added Charley Hoffman. “The comfort and stability are incredible”. The Back Thing Support

I

f anyone knows about back pain, it is golfers. It is the most common injury related to the sport because of the repetitive twisting motion required and the modern lifestyle that requires hours of sitting (usually at a computer) with little or no movement. A long week of sitting follow by 18 holes of golf is not the healthiest thing for the back. A new product that is simple yet effective in countering the effects of sitting called The Back Thing™ has been introduced to the golf market to offset the impact of sitting while working, traveling, driving and of course in a golf cart. This foldable, light-weight support couldn’t be simpler to use. Designed by a neurosurgeon, The Back Thing supports the lower (lumbar) area of the back by giving support with different technology than other seat cushions. Instead of horizontal cushioning that pushes the lower back to overarch, The Back Thing uses vertical pine slats beneath its padded cushion to promote better posture and lumbar support and relaxes back muscles. The slim design makes it foldable and easy to carry for travel and

work. This ingenious support comes in several sizes—Recreational (great for golf), Traveler and the Original. It is light (15 oz.) and offers the feeling of a back support without having to wear anything—and promotes circulation. It was designed originally to help anyone suffering from lower back pain-- the second leading cause of doctor’s visits--beaten out only by the common cold. It also accounts for the most job-related injuries and time off from work. According to The Hidden Impact of Musculoskeletal Disorders on Americans report, there were 264 million lost workdays in one year due to back pain. That’s two workdays for every full-time worker in the country. People in the U.S. spend more than $100 billion on treatment for lower back pain, according to the The Journal of American Osteopathic Association. Back pain can come on abruptly after lifting a heavy object or as the result of an accident, but most back pain is caused by sedentary lifestyles. In general, Americans spend much of their time sitting. They sit for work, for travel, to eat and to watch TV. They’re sitting so much it’s become detrimental to their health, leading scientists to say that sitting is the new smoking. Combine this with a sport like golf that involves twisting and bending, and you have even more need to protect the back! The Back Thing is available online at www.TheBackThing.com
