Since opening to the public in April, Ozarks National has generated a groundswell of interest from guests and taken the golf industry by storm.

Sandals Emerald Bay Golf Course

by Tim Cotroneo You feel an adrenaline rush as you’re handed the four-inch plastic badge that reads, “Bahamas Great Exuma Classic.” This is it. You’re officially all in on your first Pro-Am event. You’re also a player in a setting that feels like a real, live postcard.

Resort Report: Pinehurst Resort’s Manor Inn

by Shane Sharp Pinehurst Resort’s Manor Inn has been reborn as a haven for golf groups and buddy trips. Fitting, considering the 43-room hotel on the corner of Magnolia and Community Roads was a favorite of a young Arnold Palmer when he visited the “Cradle of American Golf” during his salad days.

Golf + Music = Good Times

Winner Andrew Landry with Phil Mickelson

I

n the beginning, the January PGA Tour stop in the Southern California desert that began 60 years ago was a celebration of Hollywood movie stars and professional golf that got the winter vacation season in this part of the country off to a rousing start. Bob Hope became the driving force with his love for golf and celebrity friends who gladly spent a week in this winter oasis making jokes with the other amateurs and pros and helping raise money for local charities in what used to be the Bob Hope Classic. Now, six decades later, much has changed, but much remains the same as this event has come full circle. Now, instead of Hope as the tournament host, PGA Tour Hall of Famer Phil Mickelson has now become the face of the tournament. And instead of a steady stream of movie notables, the event has now evolved into a golfer’s version of Coachella Music Festival and Stagecoach—the world-renowned concert weekends that highlight the month of April in the Coachella Valley. American Express signed on to be the

8 Golf Vacations • February 2020

new title sponsor and put their stamp on the tournament for the first time in January’s playing of this PGA tournament that is now called The American Express by bringing in music legend Stevie Nicks and country music super star Luke Bryan to entertain record crowds on Friday and Saturday evening after the finish of golf at the PGA West Stadium Course in La Quinta. Both nights provided an electric atmosphere as the music reverberated off the Santa Rosa Mountains nearby after sunshinefilled days of world-class golf—something that hasn’t changed in all this time. Another new aspect of the tournament is the behind the scenes involvement by Mickelson, the San Diego native who has formed a new charity along with his management company—Lagardère Sports—to be the non-profit beneficiary behind the tournament that will disperse proceeds to local charities in the Coachella Valley. Lagardère Sports has been managing the event for the past three years and has worked to enhance the fan experience with new hospitality offerings

such as the Albertsons Vons Pavilions Club 18, Casamigos Tequila Club 17, Michelob Ultra Beers Fore Birdies, and the Corona Premier Par Tee Lounge. Even though this event used to be at 90 holes played over 5 days, the current 72hole format in four days is still one of only two on the PGA Tour that has amateurs playing during the regular competition as the pros are paired with their amateur partners for the first three days in a ProAm format. Among a strong professional field that included Rickie Fowler, Tony Finau and Paul Casey, emerging star Andrew Landry - who lost this tournament in a playoff two years ago - managed to pull out victory this year by shooting 26-under and held off Abraham Ancer by two shots on the final two holes. Although much has changed with this early-year PGA tournament as it has adapted to the desert’s growing reputation as a music and festival destination, the winter sunshine and world-class golf is still as bright as ever. Rumbling Bald Readies for Spring with New Golf Packages

LAKE LURE, N.C. – Rumbling Bald, the 36-hole golf resort on North Carolina’s stunning Lake Lure, announces new golf packages for 2020, customized for golf groups of any size, and ideal for weekend or weekday buddy trips. Starting at $225 per person, resort’s “Hole-in-One” package features a two-night stay, two rounds of golf on the Apple Valley and Bald Mountain courses, breakfast both days and complimentary, unlimited range balls. Lodging options include the recently updated Apple Valley Studios and two- and four-bedroom Fairway Villas. Paying homage to the 2020 Ryder Cup at Destination Kohler’s famed Whistling Straits in Wisconsin, Rumbling Bald is offering a limited availability “Ryder Cup Package.” The resort’s expert golf vacation planners will design an exciting, Ryder Cup team formatted event for golf groups in search of an unforgettable experience. The Ryder Cup Package starts at $499 per person and includes: three nights lodging; three rounds of golf scored and handicapped; complimentary replays on either course; a team shirt and resort hat; private, one-hour opening reception with wine, beer and hors d’oeuvres included; and

unlimited use of the practice facilities. “We want golfers to get here, unplug, play 18 or 36 holes and shed the stress of the hurry-up, always-on lifestyle we lead,” says Rumbling Bald General Manager Jeff Geisler. “Post round, they can relax over a hearty meal and a cold beverage, then retreat to the deck of their vacation rental with a cigar or night cap.” For groups of 12 or more, Rumbling Bald offers gratis golf for group leaders upon booking their first trip to the resort. The “12+ Comp” is ideal for PGA Professionalmember trips, tournaments, or large golf buddy trips. To learn more about Rumbling Bald’s golf courses and packages, visit www. rumblingbald.com, or email jdoran@ rumblingbald.com. To book packages directly, or to speak with golf vacation planner, call (828) 694.3072. About Rumbling Bald Resort Located on the north end of stunning Lake Lure, Rumbling Bald is one of Western North Carolina’s only multi-course golf resorts. An hour’s drive from Asheville and less than two hours from Charlotte, it features two contrasting 18-hole layouts: W.B. Lewis-designed Bald Mountain and Dan Maples-designed Apple Valley. Rumbling Bald’s marquee course, Apple Valley stretches to nearly 6,800 yards and

features expansive views of Bald Mountain and the surrounding Lake Lure area. Maples estimated 75% of shots at Apple Valley are either level or downhill, virtually unheard for a mountain course. Shimmering mountain lakes adorn 12 holes, but water only occasionally comes into play. Bald Mountain, at 6,300 yards, is renowned for its unique configuration of five par 5s and five par 3s. Movie buffs appreciate the 16th green, the backdrop of a scene from the movie “Dirty Dancing.” A protégé of golf course architect George Cobb, Lewis is known for his traditional approach to course design. This philosophy is reflected in Bald Mountain’s playability from tee to green. The resort’s 150 vacation rental homes, condos and studios are ideal for golf groups of various sizes and feature golf course and mountain views. Post round, golfers can relax at Legends on the Lake, casual dining on shores of Lake Lure, or grab a hearty sandwich and cold drink at Pinnacle Southern Kitchen at the Apple Valley clubhouse. Rumbling Bald is rich with amenities and activities, including scenic Lake Lure boat tours, boat rentals, tennis, pickleball, a full-service spa and hiking trails. It’s the perfect basecamp for exploring the natural wonders of western North Carolina and the Blue Ridge Mountains. Rumbling Bald Resort

Davis Love Iii Designed Putting Course Opening Soon At Historic Boar’s Head Resort The golf offerings at the historic Boar’s Head Resort continue to evolve with the addition of the new putting course, designed by PGA Professional Davis Love III and Love Golf Design (LGD). Nearly an acre in size, this extensive 31,000 square foot putting course features 18 holes lined with slopes and ridgelines, mimicking the surrounding terrain and mountains. Located directly behind the clubhouse back patio, the opening of the putting course will follow the completion of

the new driving range, which has been redesigned to complement the new 18-hole championship course, anticipated to open July 1, 2020. “When we began developing the layout and design of the new putting course, we were so inspired by the landscapes,” said Love Golf Design Lead Architect Scot Sherman. “You truly capture a sense of place on this course and we wanted to find a way to celebrate that. Many of the slopes found in the putting course directly mirror the ridgelines and peaks of the surrounding mountains. We hope players embrace the

magic of their surroundings while enjoying time out on the links.” The new golf course is one of several recent updates at Boar’s Head Resort. In 2019, the resort completed major renovations that introduced a new lobby experience and porte cochere at the historic main building, along with a complete redesign of the acclaimed Mill Room restaurant. Golf-Travel Products Take Center Stage at 2020 PGA Merchandise Show

T

he travel industry is riding the tailwinds of a solid economy, and golf-travel is reaping the benefits. At the 2020 PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando, Florida, the once niche category was well-represented among the behemoth golf club and ball manufacturers. It does help, however, that “golf-travel” spans hard and soft goods, as well as other related accessories and gear. In other words, whatever golfers can reasonably throw in the back of their vehicle or stuff in a travel cover is fair game. After walking the show floor for three straight days (60,000 steps, for those of you scoring at home), we sourced a stable of golf-travel products we can’t do without in 2020. Walker Trolleys Cape Model Pushcart The engineering behind Walker Trolleys’ pushcarts is sophisticated, belying its outwardly streamlined, minimalist

14 Golf Vacations • February 2020

appearance. However, the mission is simple: make walking golf cool, again. For golfers who like to hit the open road, a convenient one-fold handle makes collapsing and unfolding the trolley easier than any other push cart on the market. A central hub enables the handle and legs to bend on two separate axes for a compact fold. Premium materials – including aluminum, waxed canvas and handcrafted leather – create a unique, elegant appearance that wouldn’t be out of place on the great links courses of Scotland during the time of Old and Young Tom Morris. The storage unit, made of waterresistant waxed canvas, provides an endless number of ways for golfers to customize their trolley. Walker Trolleys Cape model will be available this spring, and a limited number of push carts will be available for preorder for $399 at www.walkertrolleys.com. Peter Millar Crown Sport Fuse Vest, Hyperlight Reflect It would be easy for the leading men’s luxury golf apparel brand to rest on its laurels every year at the PGA Merchandise Show. Its booths are impressive (yes, booths, plural), its apparel lines timeless and its industry relationships are both deep and wide.

Instead, the Raleigh, N.C.-based company has expanded its demographic to appeal and resonate with millennials, Gen-X and Baby Boomers – by no means an easy feat in the apparel world. Case in point, the Crown Sport Fuse Vest. This new lightweight active piece is designed with a hybrid garment construction, combining a windproof, water-resistant stretch front with a stretch interlock knit back panel. The perforated polyester fill inside maintains warmth for weight and improved breathability. While they aren’t golf shoes, per se, Peter Millar’s Hyperlight Glide are perfect for combo business-leisure trips. The continued evolution of our Hyperlight Glide design, the Reflect features the same technical makeup and fit as the 2.0 model but with key updates like reflective detailing featured at top eyelets and logos. An engineered knit texture transitions between the eyeline, toe box and heel counter for added visual appeal. Both the Crown Fuse Sport Vest ($148) and Hyperlight Reflect sneakers ($155) will be available in July. For more details on current offerings visit www.petermillar.com

Sun Mountain Kube Golf Travel Bag When it comes to melding hard and soft covers into a must-have golf travel bag, Sun Mountain is the undisputed champ. Sure, Club Glove has the PGA TOUR player street credibility and its travel covers are the real deal. But Missoula, Montana-based Sun Mountain knows a thing or two about engineering products for a rugged environment. They nailed it with ClubGlider, the only golf travel bag with patented leg wheels allowing golfers to “glide” through airports with ease. And now they’ve done it again with the introduction of the “see-it-to-believeit” Kube golf travel bag. Kube looks like an ordinary small suitcase but unbuckle it and its opens into a full-sized golf travel bag. If a golf travel bag was featured in a Mission: Impossible movie, it would be Kube. Its folded size is a mere 9” x 13” x 14.5” and weights only 6.8 pounds. Kube is available in eight colors with a retail price of $229.99. Big Cedar’s New Ozarks National

Best New Public Golf Course in America

G

olf Digest has named the highly anticipated fourth course at Big Cedar Lodge, Ozarks National, as the Best New Public Course in America in the publication’s annual rankings list. Since opening to the public in April, Ozarks National has generated a groundswell of interest from guests and taken the golf industry by storm. The course, designed by the renowned firm of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore in partnership with noted conservationist Johnny Morris, is a dream-come-true for nature lovers and golfers of all skill levels, drawing rave reviews and taking its place as the latest offering in the blossoming golf destination resort. The honor is particularly notable considering the elite field of other new celebrated courses, including the redesign of the No. 4 Course at the storied Pinehurst Resort & Country Club in North Carolina coming in second, and the South Course at the highly regarded Arcadia Bluffs Golf Club in Michigan ranking third.

“Our entire team put a tremendous amount of energy into Ozarks National and we are honored to be recognized as this year’s best new public course,” said Johnny Morris, noted conservationist and founder of Bass Pro Shops and Big Cedar Lodge. “It was so inspiring to work alongside Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, who share our passion for connecting people to nature through the game of golf and other outdoor recreation activities.” One of the oldest and most respected publications in the sport, Golf Digest determines its highly coveted rankings based on a panel of more than 1,700 high-level golfers with handicaps under 10. Panelists praised the course, which they anonymously evaluated based on a list of criteria that included the range of shots, challenge level, layout variety and scenic beauty:

“Stunning views from nearly every hole, minimalist teeing areas, very large greens, most with collection areas, some with false fronts.” “I was totally blown away by Ozarks National…It was as good as any course anywhere.” “The setting is incredible and the commitment to a golf destination is eye-popping.” “As a Missourian, I’ve been waiting for one day to have a course that belongs in the discussion for the Top 100, and I think we may now have one.” “The course runs along the top of a ridge. We could see forever as we played.” “Nearly every hole gives a great view of the Ozark mountains, with skyline greens and nods to some Golden Age design principles.” Redefining Golf in the Ozarks Morris joined forces with the Coore & Crenshaw firm to announce the Ozarks National project in 2015. Envisioned to redefine the perception of golf in the Ozarks, the new course serves as a gateway to the Ozarks National Forest, aligning with Johnny Morris’ personal mission to inspire more people to connect with the great outdoors. www.golfvacationsmag.com

“This has been an incredible piece of land to work with and the vision behind the entire golf experience at Big Cedar Lodge fits perfectly into our approach to build natural golf courses that connect people to the local landscape,” said Bill Coore, co-principal of Coore & Crenshaw, at the time of the announcement. Ozarks National showcases golf in the manner in which it was intended, with nods to traditional Scottish-style golf. Measuring 7,036 yards from the back tees, the course represents the terrain of the Ozarks with incredible vistas and beautiful views. Designed to be environmentally friendly with conservation in mind, the 18-hole layout features challenging carries and a variety of visually appealing approach shots that are highlighted by native habitat. The course also includes several signature creative features Morris is known for, such as a 400-foot wooden beam and plank bridge hand built by Amish craftsmen, which connects the tee box and fairway of the 13th hole that stands 60-feet above a flowing creek. The property used to be a dairy farm, with the “Stone House” greeting golfers at the midway point of their rounds. The house was built in the early 1900s, dating back to the farming days, and has never been moved. “Believe me, when you get up on some of these plateaus, you

can cast your eyes and see 40-50 miles,” Crenshaw said at the time. “You can’t do that it in too many places in the United States. This is gorgeous. We want to showcase that beauty, and Johnny Morris has given us an unbelievable opportunity.” The beauty in the course came from the minimalist approach to the project, with Coore and Crenshaw making several visits with Morris to the site during construction, using the natural beauty of the land and letting the course conform to the property, not the other way around. When Ben Crenshaw came to visit for the official course opening early this year, his fondness for the final product was clear to see. “Obviously when you look around, you have not only the holes that you’re working on, but also the land around you, which for me is a big part of the atmosphere around you when you look off into the distance,” Crenshaw said. “You know you’re in the Ozarks, and now it was our job to compliment that, with the way that the holes fit together, and the directions they are going. We’re very proud of the final piece here.” America’s Next Great Golf Destination The recognition adds to Big Cedar Lodge’s list of growing resort and golf accolades. In September, Golf Magazine named Big Cedar Lodge, America’s premier wilderness resort, as the No. 1 family golf resort in North America, as part of its Top 100

www.golfvacationsmag.com

Resorts issue for 2019-2020. It was the most comprehensive review of elite destinations in North America, and the most expansive editorial project the publication has undertaken. Soon, Morris and Tiger Woods will unveil Big Cedar’s fifth golf course – Payne’s Valley, a 19-hole course built to showcase the region’s natural beauty and to honor late, local golf legend Payne Stewart. It is the first public golf course in the U.S. by Woods and his firm, TGR Design. With Payne’s Valley, Woods and Morris will offer a course where players of all skill levels will be able to enjoy the game with each other in the beautiful Ozark Mountain landscape with kid’s tees located further down the fairways. The course will also feature a spectacular and breathtaking 19th hole affectionately known as Big Rock at Payne’s Valley. That course will join Ozarks National; Top of the Rock, a Jack Nicklaus-designed par-3 course in nearby Ridgedale, that features a seamless display of nature and golf at its finest, overlooking Table Rock Lake; the Buffalo Ridge Springs Course, designed by renowned architect Tom Fazio and bringing players in close contact with nature, native grasses and freeranging North American bison from nearby Dogwood Canyon Nature Park; and the 13-hole Mountain Top course, designed by Gary Player and delivering unparalleled thrills for golfers passionate about nature and golf. www.golfvacationsmag.com

Currently, Morris and Big Cedar are working with Audubon to obtain Audubon Signature Sanctuary status, an environmental education and certification program for properties that follow comprehensive sustainable resource management principles. Johnny Morris achieved signature status with the Top of the Rock course 15 years ago, one of fewer than 100 courses in the world to earn the designation at the time. A resort-wide sanctuary status designation would be the only one of its kind to encompass all aspects of golf development and the greater development of Big Cedar Lodge. About Big Cedar Lodge Located in the heart of Missouri’s Ozark Mountains, Big Cedar Lodge is America’s premier wilderness resort. A passion of Bass Pro Shops founder Johnny Morris, the 4,600acre lakeside retreat connects families to the outdoors with a variety of nature-based experiences including fishing, boating, hiking, spa and wellness offerings, hosting 2.4 million guests annually. Signature attractions include Top of the Rock, home to world-class golf, dining, and entertainment; and Dogwood Canyon Nature Park, a 10,000-acre nonprofit wildlife nature park. Named “Number One Resort in the Midwest” by the readers of Travel + Leisure, the resort offers genuine Ozarks hospitality and a convenient location just south of Branson. ou feel an adrenaline rush as you’re handed the fourinch plastic badge that reads, “Bahamas Great Exuma Classic.” This is it. You’re officially all in on your first Pro-Am event. You’re also a player in a setting that feels like a real, live postcard. The tournament is held on the island of Great Exuma, a 37-mile-long sliver located one hour south of Nassau. What the island lacks in size it makes up for in jaw-dropping beauty. One of the reasons you chose this amped up golf vacation is that you’ve seen photos of the ocean holes located on the Sandals Emerald Bay Golf Course’s back nine. The ocean view from your room’s balcony delivered a seeing is believing glimpse. The Bahamas Great Exuma Classic is held on the 7,000yard championship layout designed by none other than Greg Norman. Rumor has it that Norman will make an appearance at tomorrow’s first round of the Korn Ferry Tour event that follows the Pro-Am. Wow! Your heart starts beating in double time.

Bahama Mama Rocks Me As you blast a few five irons on the palm tree studded practice range, Darius Rucker is singing “Mama Rock Me” through the sound system reverberating from the registration tent behind the practice area. The congenial, laid-back vibe you’re feeling will change dramatically tomorrow when the hungry Korn Ferry players tee it up for the first event of the 2020 season. Oh yes, the winner will take home a check for $108,000. For now, smiles abound from participants eager to play in this scenic golf environment conceived by Norman, the Sandals Resort, Bahamas Tourism, and BD Global. The Kentuckybased BD Global owns and operates this tourney, and they work in conjunction with the Golf Channel for broadcasting the tournament worldwide. CEO Brooks Downing stops by to make sure you’re doing well, before he glides down the line to speak with a Korn Ferry player hoping to become golf’s next big thing. As you get acquainted with the professional who is assigned to your foursome, the reality kicks in that you could be playing

with a star in the making. Some of the recognizable names participating in the Bahamas Great Exuma Classic include Camilo Villegas, Sean O’Hair, and Robert Garrigus. Ocean’s 11, Ocean’s 12, Ocean’s 13…. The idea of a winter golf tournament vacation is such a winwin. Not only does it feel great to dust off the sticks in January, but the balmy temps and beauty of luxuriating at the Sandals Emerald Bay Resort makes everything seem easy. The resort’s all-inclusive offerings mean you don’t have to break out your wallet once you’ve arrived on island. Plus, the proximity of the resort to the tournament means you’re rubbing elbows with the Golf Channel crew at breakfast. The best news is you’re within tidy walking distance of the course once the tourney begins. On the heels of the first round, Norman addressed the fans, the players, and the Golf Channel on the Par 3, 148-yard 11th hole. This petite golf hole is one of the most picturesque in the world. Only in the Bahamas will you experience this vibrant painting of turquoise ocean, green Bermuda follicles and

temperamental trade winds. Golfers will remember the 11th as an unforgettable golf versus nature moment. The dynamic landscape bar gets raised ever higher as you progress through the ocean-rich 12th through 17th holes. After avoiding the turquoise water on the 11th hole’s right side, Emerald Bay’s topography flips a switch starting on the 418-yard 12th hole with the ocean latching on to your left side for the next six holes running. After holing out on the 637yard, Par 5 18th hole, you notice an electronic leaderboard scrolling through the Korn Ferry field. You reflect that you’ve played a small role in a tournament witnessed by 70 million viewers on the Golf Channel. Caribbean Thrill of a Vacation As you reflect on your first Pro-AM and ponder your week in Great Exuma, the thrills were almost too numerous to count. Your French-born professional playing partner couldn’t have been more patient and helpful with your game. Even better was the now forever image of experiencing the Normandesigned Sandals Emerald Bay Golf Course up close and personal. Your round is now a bucket list keepsake.

Oh, what a week. You observed the Korn Ferry professionals master Exuma’s wind, you witnessed Will Zalatoris’ hole in one, and you watched as 44-year-old Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey raised the winner’s trophy. You stood within a chip shot of legendary Greg Norman. And time will tell if you were in the presence of golf’s next big thing Most of all, you fell in love with Great Exuma and the exquisite water color that is the island’s trademark. From the Emerald Bay Beach white sand shore you bask in one last sunset, and gaze at the 11th hole in the distance. This magic moment is when you realize that this Caribbean golf tournament vacation idea just may be an annual tradition. https://www.sandals.com/pgakornferrytour/ https://www.sandals.com/emerald-bay/ https://bdglobalsports.com/

Pinehurst Resort’s Reimagined Manor Inn

PINEHURST, NORTH CAROLINA

P

inehurst Resort’s Manor Inn has been reborn as a haven for golf groups and buddy trips. Fitting, considering the 43-room hotel on the corner of Magnolia and Community Roads was a favorite of a young Arnold Palmer when he visited the “Cradle of American Golf” during his salad days. The King was always the life of the party during his days on the PGA Tour and would no doubt approve of the Manor Inn’s new look and esprit de corps positioning. One can almost envision him holding court in the Inn’s Library or embroiled in a poker game in the cozy Club Room. First opened in 1923 and acquired in 1990 by the resort, golfers like Palmer and his father Deacon have gravitated toward Manor Inn’s relaxed vibe, cozy enclaves and off-the-beatenpath location a short walk from The Carolina Hotel and resort hub. Now, that gravitational pull is even stronger, buoyed by a spacious, communal lobby, larger king and double queen rooms with hardwood floors and two finely appointed hospitality suites that accommodate groups up to 20 (available for the entire length of stay). The centerpiece of lobby is the North & South Bar. Featuring a vast selection of fine whiskey and craft beers from Pinehurst Brewing Co. next door, the bar is adorned with vintage advertising and photos paying homage to the historic North & South Amateur Championship, played at Pinehurst since 1901. The bar’s signature element is the dramatic ceiling, with an illustration of the original routing of Donald Ross’ first four courses at Pinehurst. And it’s not just what’s inside the renovated Manor Inn that will astound guests. A new patio outside the North & South Bar features three firepits, seating for 20 and a soothing water feature (a full day of golf can be a strenuous endeavor). Sipping a single malt Scotch or fresh IPA on the patio, the view is slightly downhill to Pinehurst Brewing Co., below. Opened in 2018, “PBC” quickly emerged as the Village of Pinehurst’s most popular gathering spot. Housed in the old steam plant building, it serves up award-winning

PINEHURST RESORT’S MANOR INN brews, barbeque smoked onsite and handcrafted pizza. The lone original component to the Manor following the renovation is its fabled exterior structure of the unique Kellastone, a special stucco-style building material that was new to the era and known for its permanence. “Our intention was to improve upon and modernize the guest experience while still preserving the Manor’s unique charm,” said Bob Dedman, Jr., Pinehurst Resort’s chief executive offer. “I think we’ve accomplished that in fine fashion. Our mantra is simple: always Pinehurst, but always better.” For Pinehurst Resort, “better” has included an astonishing run over the past decade, bookended by the restoration of its famed No. 2 course by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2011, and renovation of No. 4 by Gil Hanse in 2018.

Also, during this historic span, the resort opened the country’s most talked about short course, The Cradle, acquired nearby National Golf Club and rebranded it as No. 9 and expanded its 18-hole putting course (Thistle Dhu). Golfers now have more dining options than ever before, with the aforementioned PBC (owned by the resort) and addition of The Deuce, a full-service bar and grill in the clubhouse overlooking the 18th green of No. 2. The resort’s Donald Ross Golf Package is an excellent option for experiencing the Manor Inn and a sampling of Pinehurst’s championship golf lineup. It includes a two-night stay, three rounds of golf, overflowing breakfast buffet and dinner, daily. For more information or to check rates and availability, visit www.pinehurst.com.

SWEETSTUFF Garsen Grip

G

olfers have long had a very personal relationship with their putters—especially the grips that over the years have come in all shapes and sizes—and might have as much to do with how well one putts as anything. Garsen Golf, a boutique putter grip company based in Miami, Florida, has developed a reputation for some unique grip designs since it was founded eight years ago by Bernard Garsen. His creations have now helped to win 31 professional tournaments world-wide, including the 145th British Open won by Henrik Stenson with the 72-hole scoring record for a Major Championship-and the most recent with Abraham Ancer winning the Australian Open. Two of his latest creations—The Max and the Quad Tour—provide a unique feel and hand placement that many players will find helps them with the proper stroke mechanics on the green. The unique shape does not have a flat front— the ridge on the top side of the grip is mounted in line with the putter face, creating an angled front profile. The Garsen Golf G-Pro Max Putter Grip is the first putter grip with a revolutionary, patented, two-sided design. It places your hands in a position, so the palms face each other, and the wrists are in a neutral position. It turns your elbows into your body and sets your shoulders back. This relieves arm and shoulder tension, inhibits wrist action, which takes “the hands out of the putting” and promotes shoulder rotation, creating a solid putting stroke, which will give you a one-piece feel, leading to a more consistent stroke. This grip also comes in a 15-inch model for longer putters and is offered in seven color schemes. The QUAD Pro grip gives you the benefits of the MAX but places your hands in a traditional position but also turns your elbows into your body and sets your shoulders back. This grip comes in black.
