Terre Blanche Hotel Spa Golf Resort has been ranked #10 in the first ever Golf World TOP 100 World Resorts. It is the only Continental European resort to feature in the top 10, alongside acclaimed golf resorts Pebble Beach in California, Pinehurst in North Carolina and Gleneagles in UK.

If there was a shortlist of under-appreciated golf course architects, P.B. Dye might rank near the top. Ironic, given his unabashedly outgoing demeanor and penchant for promotion. Interestingly, though, the youngest son of the legendary Pete Dye was always happiest on the seat of a bulldozer during his design heydays in the 80s and 90s.

by Tim Cotroneo

The Creek Club at Reynolds Lake Oconee could have been the inspiration for John Legend’s best-selling song “All of Me.” There may be no golf course in the world that so closely mirrors his lyrics, “Love your curves and all your edges. All your perfect imperfections.”

Golfweek List Takes on New Importance Amid New Normal

G

olfweek just dropped its 2022 list of the “Top 200 Residential Courses in America,” and this annual ranking of the best golf community layouts throughout the country has never been more impactful. Sales of golf course homes and lots have surged over the past 18 months, a trend no one saw coming as 2020 got underway a couple of years ago. In fact, many mainstream media outlets, the Wall Street Journal among them, declared this once white-hot residential category all but dead, post-recession. And while the real estate market shows signs of slowing down overall, there’s no end in sight for the demand for living in a golf course community – especially private developments. According to golf club and home matching service Golf Life Navigators, more than 60% of its customers are looking for homes in a gated community. “Demand for private golf club community amenities and real estate are at all-time highs,” says Jason Becker, Golf Life Navigators co-founder and chief executive officer. “Before Covid hit, the demand was to buy outside the gates of a golf community. But you need people to live on the inside to support the amenities.” Champion Hills, a “mature” private golf community in Hendersonville, N.C. with a highly-regarded Tom Fazio designed course, moved up 13 spots on the Golfweek’s 2022 list. It’s tied for 51st and up from 64 in 2021 and 70 in 2020. Members, who own the course and club, and Troon, the operator, have remained steadfastly committed to their foothold in the residential golf realm. “To move up 19 places in just two years without making any architectural changes to the golf course is a testament to Mr. Fazio’s timeless design and the unwavering commitment of our team,” says Dana Schultz, General Manager and Chief Operating Officer at Champion Hills. “Year after year, Golfweek and its raters continue to have a deep appreciation for the design and conditioning aspects of this golf course.” Golfweek’s annual selection of the country’s 200 top real estate-focused layouts is determined by its team of more than 850 course evaluators. Each year, the raters survey over 3,600 facilities, grading each in accordance with Golfweek’s 10 strict standards of evaluation. Schultz says raters who visit are hip to the fact that Champion Hills is Fazio’s former home course and club, and that the legendary golf course architect spared no detail in devising a brilliant routing through the heavily forested hills, deep ravines and cool mountain streams of its Blue Ridge Mountain setting. For example, Fazio and his team of shapers pulled ridges into valleys and filled hollows to create “playing platforms” providing golfers with level lies amid 350-feet of elevation change. The result is one of the most playable mountain-style courses in the entire region, according to Fazio. “Six holes play slightly uphill on the entire course, but only six,” he says. “Overall, the majority of holes play downhill. We did it through grading and do it through transition areas from the green to the next tee.” Like many modern courses, Champion Hills features five sets of tees. But unlike most layouts, Fazio designed three tees rated for women by the Carolinas Golf Association. Additionally, “combo tees” placed 15 to 30 yards in front of forced carries eliminate stressful shots for higher handicap golfers or those with slower swing speeds. The club offers a variety of golf memberships, ranging from Full Equity and Equity 55 Golf to National and Annual Explorer (a one-year trial). Especially appealing to prospective members, full golf and social memberships are “vertical,” extending the benefits and privileges of golf and social memberships to immediate family at no extra cost. Like many golf communities across the U.S., resale homes are few-and-far-between at Champion Hills as of this writing. But for buyers who aren’t in a hurry to relocate, a wide-array of homesites are available in a variety of different settings and price points. And Champion Hills works with a stable of custom builders that can turn-key the entire process. “Right now, the time frame to build a custom home at Champion Hills is around 18 months,” says Champion Hills onsite Realtor Amber Saxon of Beverly Hanks. “If you have the leeway or patience to wait, the upside is you can get exactly the home you’ve always wanted.” For more information about memberships and real estate, visit www.championhills.com.

Both the North and South golf courses are recognized as two of Hawaii’s best in Golfweek’s 2021 “Best Courses You Can Play in Hawaii” ranking. The North Course, a Homer Flint, Raymond Cain and Robin Nelson design, was built on an ancient lava bed, overlaying the rugged brown pahoehoe lava flow and features rolling fairways and runs through kiawe forests. A 230-acre protected archeological district lies on the northern edge of the North Course, while feral goats roam the course, cropping the grass and providing a unique neutral hazard. The par-3 17th is the signature hole on the North Course as a series of elevated tees form a natural amphitheater with the green at the base of a lava bowl. The South Course, also a Flint, Cain and Nelson design, was built on the 16th century Kaniku lava flow snaking through stark, rugged a‘a lava. A pair of par 3s – the 7th and 15th holes – are Mauna Lani South’s signature holes and are two of the most photographed golf

2Nd Annual Copper Cup Set For January 16 & 17 At Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club Maricopa, Ariz. – In-state rivals, the University of Arizona and Arizona State University men’s golf teams, will square off in the second annual Copper Cup, a two-day, four-round match January 16 and 17, 2022 at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Ariz. The inaugural Ryder Cup-style event held in 2021 was won by Arizona State as David Puig pulled out a singles win to lead the Sun Devils to a one-point victory. Puig birdied the 16th hole, then parred 17 and 18 for a 1-up win over Briggs Duce to clinch a 12.5-11.5-point win. Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club and the two universities are encouraging fans to attend the 2022 Copper Cup as stands will be set on the 1st and 18th holes to take-in the action. The Copper Cup will be free to attend. The teams will play four four-ball matches on January 16 in the morning, followed by eight singles matches in the afternoon. On January 17, four matches with foursomes will take place, followed by eight singles matches in the afternoon to finish. Each match will be worth one point, while ties will be awarded a half-point to both sides. Twenty-four points are awarded, as it will take 12.5 to win the Copper Cup. Selection of pairings for both daily matches will be done live the night before between coaches and made available to all players and public immediately. “Everyone loved last year’s Copper Cup. What started as a quasiexhibition event, turned into an intense competition that came down to the final holes,” said ASU Men’s Golf Head Coach Matt Thurmond. “I believe all the match play practice really helped us at the NCAA Championship. The second Copper Cup will be even better and we can’t wait for it. Our team is spending the off-season training with the Copper Cup on their mind as it is the first college golf tournament of the spring. We hope to see many Sun Devil and Wildcat fans out there cheering on their teams.” “The Copper Cup is a major for our team,” said Arizona Men’s Golf Head Coach Jim Anderson. “The tournament provides us so much to debut the championship segment of our season. Ak-Chin Southern Dunes is championship course with conditions, and the speed, firmness, and overall course set up require discipline and smarts. The format, both Match Play and Team, give eight players a chance to score meaningful points, something we see very little prior to the postseason. Of course our opponent too, will have our full attention as we know both programs are poised for success independent of one another. Lastly, the rivalry adds to the week where players and fans on both sides can easily relate. Our team couldn’t be more excited about the opportunity to open up at The Copper Cup and we are very appreciative for the staff and community’s efforts to kick off the college golf season.” “Our goal in 2021, with the inaugural Copper Cup, was to create an event that had such a great feel and buzz that everyone would want to make it an annual event – we accomplished that goal,” said Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club General Manager Brady Wilson. “Now, in 2022, our mission is to take this event to the next level by inviting fans. We want to create a Ryder Cup-like atmosphere

for these teams. With the caliber of players from each university, I believe a number of them will be playing in a future Ryder Cup!” In October 2020, the NCAA announced that Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club will be a host site for the 2026 Men’s Golf NCAA Regionals. Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, named a “Top 100 Golf Course You Can Play” by Golf Magazine, will be one of six Regional sites in the U.S. with each site hosting 14 collegiate teams. The top five teams from each Regional will advance to the NCAA Championships to be held in 2026 at La Costa Resort and Spa in San Diego, Calif. Exact dates for the Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Regionals will be announced at a later date, but the tournament is expected to take place in midto-late May 2026. Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club was designed by Brian Curley and PGA TOUR veteran Fred Couples in 2002. Originally developed as a private club by private investors, the championship Australian Sandbelt-style golf course sits on 320 acres of land that was once a part of the Ak-Chin’s May 1912 reservation before it was removed by Presidential Executive Order in late 1912. Nearly 100 years later, in 2010, the Ak-Chin Community recovered its sacred land when it purchased the golf facility and opened the course to public play. The course currently boasts several coveted accolades, including being included on Golfweek’s coveted rankings of the “Top 100 Resort Courses” and “Best Courses You Can Play.” Ak-Chin Southern Dunes has played host to numerous major tournaments and events since opening in 2002, serving as an annual U.S. Open qualifying site, host course for the PING Southwest Section PGA Section Championship and several top collegiate men’s and women’s golf tournaments. The course annually hosts top amateurs in the Tucker Amateur in September and the Saguaro Amateur held in early January. Both events are part of the Troon Saguaro Amateur Series, a multi-tournament series providing high-level amateurs a chance to compete throughout the year. Rancho San Lucas Golf Club Recognized For Environmental Excellence Los Cabos, Mexico – Rancho San Lucas Golf Club has achieved designation as a Certified Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary through the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary Program for Golf Courses. The club’s golf and maintenance staff, notably head professional Mario Navarro and superintendent Manuel Felix Rivera, completed an 18-month effort to obtain sanctuary designation for Rancho San Lucas. The club and its Greg Norman-designed course is now one of over 900 venues worldwide to hold certification from Audubon International. “Rancho San Lucas Golf Club has shown a strong commitment

These categories include Environmental Planning; Wildlife & Habitat Management; Outreach and Education; Chemical Use Reduction and Safety; Water Conservation; and Water Quality Management. Opened in February 2020, the Greg Norman Signature course at Rancho San Lucas anchors an 834-acre resort and residential community on the Pacific Ocean 15 minutes from downtown Cabo San Lucas. Known for his ‘least-disturbance’ design approach, Norman built a low-profile layout that spans three different ecosystems and offers sweeping ocean views from every hole. Existing landforms and drought-resistant grasses were integrated in the design, creating an eco-friendly golf experience that flows naturally with the desertmeets-ocean setting. “Rancho San Lucas is the most spectacular piece of oceanfront property I’ve seen in a long time, so to have the opportunity to build a course on this site was truly once-in-a-lifetime,” Norman said at the club’s grand opening. “My goal was to keep it as natural as possible while showcasing the site’s arroyos, dunes and view corridors. We wanted to build a sustainable course that is playable from all perspectives.” Less than two years after its debut, mission accomplished. two courses measuring 6,366m and 6,280m in length respectively and featuring an average green size of 669m². In addition, a new clubhouse is under construction and scheduled to be finished by the end of the year located between the two courses. Designed by acclaimed architect Lubomír Zeman and built using local stone materials, it aims to achieve class A+ in energy efficiency and features photovoltaic panels. Nearing completion, the Navarino Hills golf facilities will also include a driving range with a capacity for 60 people and a 15,000m² short game area. Navarino Hills will provide the ideal complement to Costa Navarino’s two signature golf courses, The Dunes Course (designed by Bernhard Langer in association with European Golf Design) and The Bay Course (created by Robert Trent Jones Jr.). New Olazabal 36-Hole Golf Design Project At Costa Navarino Nears Conclusion José María Olazábal headed to Costa Navarino to play Navarino Hills for the first time as his eagerly anticipated new 36-hole Navarino Hills development at the Mediterranean’s prime sustainable destination approaches its completion. Olazábal flew to Greece to play his full part in the final preparations being made for the two 18-hole courses he has designed at Navarino Hills – the world’s first International Olympic Academy Golf Course and the Hills Course. Both layouts are set to fully open in February next year and, after inspecting both courses, the two-time Masters champion couldn’t be happier as the design project nears its conclusion. “I’m thrilled with how good the two courses are looking ahead of opening early next year” said Olazábal. “The setting at Navarino Hills is one of the most spectacular that I have seen. The characteristics of the site are wonderful for golf and it surely ranks among the most beautiful properties we have ever had the chance to work on.” “The International Olympic Academy Golf Course is the longer and tougher of the two courses that I have designed. It’s more compact and, in style, different to the Hills course, which is set in the valley and has more room, especially off the tee. “We are spoiled as golfers because there are so many great places to go, but Costa Navarino is one of the most beautiful places I have ever been to. It is more than just the golf offering here, it is the whole experience that is exceptional – from the nature, the culture and the people with their amazing hospitality to the food, the beach and so many activities to choose from.” Named as the ‘World’s Best New Golf Development’ at the 2020 World Golf Awards and situated over 125 hectares overlooking the historic Bay of Navarino and the Ionian Sea, Olazábal has inherited an incredible site to pen his designs at Navarino Hills. The unique location affords views to the sea, mountains and valleys, with the

Pinehurst Resort Announces Carolina Hotel Renovation, Addition of Ryder Cup Outdoor Fire Pits PINEHURST, NC – While Pinehurst Resort’s charms have been cultivated for over 125 years, it never ceases to evolve and remain relevant to today’s guests. The next iteration of Pinehurst’s continued evolution begins in December with the phase one renovation of The Carolina Hotel’s guest rooms and lobby, as well as the creation of an expanded outdoor seating area with fire pits situated outside the Ryder Cup Lounge. Much of the project will be completed over the winter months and first half of 2022, while the guest room renovations will take place in three careful stages to ensure only a limited impact on guests’ stays. The remainder of the room renovations will be finished ahead of the 2024 U.S. Open. “Pinehurst has enjoyed a period of significant enhancements, updates and changes over the last decade,” says Bob Dedman Jr., Pinehurst Resort’s Chief Executive Officer. “This is another opportunity for us to continue to improve on the overall experience.” Since 1901, The Carolina Hotel’s signature copper cupola has welcomed guests from throughout the U.S. and around the world to “The Cradle of American Golf.” That tradition continues as its guest rooms undergo an expansive transformation, blending modern luxuries travelers have come to expect with Pinehurst’s historic charm and comfort. The refreshed and reconfigured rooms will have brighter interiors, new fixtures, finishes and custom-built furniture, as well as expanded bathrooms, improved lighting and soundproofing. The Carolina has always evoked exploration, and its lobby floors, walls, ceilings and lighting will be updated to further encourage guests to roam and discover, as will room corridors and the Carolina Coffee Shop. All work within the “Queen of the South” will pay homage to Pinehurst’s past, similar to the resort’s 2019 renovation of another of its historic hotels, The Manor. “For more than a century, The Carolina has stood as a storied

landmark in our area,” says Tom Pashley, President of Pinehurst Resort. “We will draw inspiration from its origins to incorporate into the design of the interior spaces of this grand hotel. It’s important to us that The Carolina serve the needs of today’s guest, but also that its original charm can be felt at every turn.” The improvements will continue outside as well, none more evident than the Ryder Cup Terrace. For decades, Pinehurst’s guests have retreated to the sweeping verandas circling the Carolina Hotel, soaking in the sounds and pine-scented air that make the Sandhills of North Carolina so unique. Steps off the veranda and adjacent to the Ryder Cup Lounge, the Ryder Cup Terrace will feature cozy fire pits and soft seating, making it the perfect setting to begin an evening with a pre-dinner cocktail, or to wind down after a round. As the return of the U.S. Open approaches and with the recent acquisition of The Magnolia Inn and Villaggio Ristorante & Bar, Pinehurst Resort continues to evolve. “As we like to say, ‘It’s always Pinehurst, always better,’” Dedman says. “We’re committed to doing everything we can to give our guests the very best experience they can possibly have at Pinehurst.” To book tee times and golf packages: www.pinehurstresort.com, 855.235.8507.

f there was a shortlist of under-appreciated golf course architects, P.B. Dye might rank near the top. Ironic, given his unabashedly outgoing demeanor and penchant for promotion. Interestingly, though, the youngest son of the legendary Pete Dye was always happiest on the seat of a bulldozer during his design heydays in the 80s and 90s. Just as he embraces life to the fullest, Paul Burke Dye relished the opportunity to work with golf resort and community developers. These were, after all, his clients, and golf courses as the leading amenity for both business models were an inevitable truth. In other words, if you can’t beat, build with them. For traveling golfers or those looking to settle down in a golf community, here are some of the top P.B. Dye golf courses you can play (public) or join (private). P.B. Dye Golf Club Most golf course critics consider the P.B. Dye Golf Club in Ijamsville, Maryland, to be Dye’s seminal work. Golf Digest once ranked it as one of the 50 Toughest Courses in America, and its resistance to scoring and strategic shot values are off the charts. The layout pitches and rolls over 250 acres and boasts the complete array of P.B. Dye accouterments: mounds, moguls, multi-tiered greens and deep pot bunkers. P.B. Dye Golf Club is open to the public with rates starting at $65 in the afternoon. For more information: www.pbdyegolf.com 20 Golf Vacations • January 2022

The Club at Olde Cypress Olde Cypress in the golf capital of Naples, Fla. is eminently enjoyable, progressively playable for the forward to middle tees, and long enough to challenge long hitters from the tips. Seeking omnipresent sunshine, pristine beaches and a lifestyle only Southwest Florida can offer, new members have flocked to this privately owned, private club over the past 18 months. Adding to the attraction: Olde Cypress recently reopened following a re-grassing of all tee boxes, fairways and greens, as well as updates to bunkers, the practice facility and clubhouse. Membership categories include social, full golf and associate golf and offer access to the club’s other amenities, like tennis, pickleball and fitness, as well as fine and casual dining. For more information: www.oldecypress.com Cherokee Valley Course and Club At Cherokee Valley just north of Greenville, S.C., Dye essentially delights golfers with multiple courses within a single layout. The first four holes are relatively flat and laid out in proximity to the new golf shop and chef-driven restaurant, Core 450. Six through eight take players closer to Glassy Mountain, nine and 10 circle around the practice range, while 11-18 feature more than 300-feet of elevation change. Both memberships and daily fee play are offered, as are golf packages featuring the club’s quaint cottages. Cherokee Valley is just 30 minutes from downtown Greenville, one of the best small cities in the U.S. For more information: www.cherokeevalleyclub.com www.golfvacationsmag.com

Moorland Course When P.B. and developer Larry Young unveiled the Moorland Course at Legends Resort in Myrtle Beach in 1990, shock value was a necessary ingredient to make a splash in a market with more than 100 golf courses. Golf Digest immediately tapped it as one of the toughest tracks in the U.S., and Dye and Young delighted in causing golfers to rise to incredible heights and sink to considerable depths all in five hours. The 245-yard par-4 16th hole is guarded by the Grand Strand’s most famous bunker, dubbed “Hell’s Half Acre.” For more information: www.legendsgolf.com/moorland The Links at Fisher Island For a nine-hole facility to make a list of its designer’s best golf courses, it has to be something special. The Links at Fisher Island is more than that – it’s one of the country’s most precious golf assets. The course is the centerpiece of the Fisher Island Club, a 216-acre barrier island off the coast of Miami. Dye loves to say he packed 18 holes of design features into nine holes at the Links at Fisher Island. Not only did he do that, there’s a full-size practice range and an immaculate 10,000-square-foot clubhouse. Equity memberships are offered for property owners and a limited number of non-owners. T

he Creek Club at Reynolds Lake Oconee could have been the inspiration for John Legend’s best-selling song “All of Me.” There may be no golf course in the world that so closely mirrors his lyrics, “Love your curves and all your edges. All your perfect imperfections.” Reynolds Lake Oconee tapped Innovative Golf Architect Jim Engh to build something truly unique. Engh ultimately delivered The Creek Club, which opened in 2007. First timers will discover a 7,000-yard journey of mounds, elevations, and breathtaking curves. Pull your hat down a bit before teeing off on the Par 5, 578-yard first hole because you’re in for a scintillating ride. Looking back, imagine Engh’s thoughts when he found himself next in line to follow Reynolds’ pantheon of Master Designers that include Cupp, Nicklaus, Fazio, and Rees Jones. Engh was tapped because of his reputation for emphasizing beautiful aesthetics and delivering a compelling golf experience. Enter Creek Club, an 18-hole roller coaster in which there is a 99 percent chance you hit more than one shot that you’ve never hit in your life. You’re My End and My Beginning In Legend’s song, he shares that if you risk it all, there’s a chance of gaining something amazing in return. Upon arriving at The Creek Club, your first eye-opener is an elevated practice area that looks out on to the wild blue yonder. We’re talking a driving range valley that is well over 300-yards deep and a

360-degree view that is suitable for primal screams, or at least a sincere sense of gratitude for the Creek Club member invite. Before the first tee box, a cordial exchange with the starter reveals the best advice you’ll receive all day. “When in doubt, go long.” In other words, for most approach shots, it’s in your best interest to grab an extra club. Slightly long could mean a reward from a contoured backstop that saves your shot if it rolls beyond the green. The alternative is a shot that comes up short and ends up in one of the Creek Club’s plentiful bunkers. A Magical Ride Legend’s All of Me speaks romantically about floating on a “magical mystery ride.” Part of the Creek Club front nine experience is how your golf cart seems to float over the Zoyzia fairways. Navigating the undulating contours that Engh infused throughout his design will put your driving skills and attention to the test. The contours, like every aspect of The Creek Club, are purposeful. Engh wants you thinking and absorbing your surroundings. It’s in your best interest to focus and enjoy the risk/reward DNA that is built into this Greensboro, GA close encounter of the golf kind. By the time you straddle the gauntlet of the second hole, featuring a stadium-sized putting green, you realize there’s

a choice. A percentage of golfers will be flummoxed by the elevation changes, the Coney Island-styled greens, and the hills weaving into a gorge. For the golfer who chooses joy, the Creek Club will embrace you like a child discovering ice cream for the first time. Georgia’s Hole in One Capital As you transition to the Creek Club back nine, there’s a good chance you’ve gained a feel for a course management strategy that works. You contend with a series of horizontal fairway bunkers dissecting the 10th, followed by a ravine on the right side of the 11th hole Par 3, and then a Leonardo DiCaprio “I’m King of the World” moment as you stand on the majestic, and highly elevated, 12th tee box. The underlying buzz about the 13th hole, a 185-yard Par 3, is that it may be the state of Georgia’s hole-in-one capital. The green is concave with a massive back wall and shape that helps funnel golf balls toward the middle. If you’re gambling with a pin seeker shot, Legend’s spot-on song lyric would be, “Cards on the table and both showing hearts.”

Club bar and restaurant. Several Creek Club members turn and give you a hearty Norm from Cheers hello. Your playing partner is still in golf mode as he orders Smash Factor and Bunker Bender cocktails. Your Creek Club playing experience was such an adrenaline rush that you reply “you pick” when asked which of the two cocktails you prefer. You’ve just spent the past four hours heeding the advice of the starter, so on your first sip, you go long and quench down to your FootJoys. Before heading back to the neighboring Ritz Carlton, you tip your hat to the Creek Club and acknowledge that John Legend had it right. Jim Engh accomplished his mission by providing a golf experience that was aesthetically beautiful and one of a kind. Creek Club, this golfer loves your curves and all your edges. https://www.reynoldslakeoconee.com/life/golf/the-creek-club

From the 18th tee box, a Par 5, 487-yard hole, you learn this closer is famous for finishing with three putting greens. When the course opened, golfers could choose their desired green. Today you shoot for the green designated for the week. To culminate a perfect 75-degree day in November, you pick up and shake hands. As you glance at the member who invited you, that’s when you realize the thrill that is Creek Club flew by way too fast. Beauty From A Beast

ransforming a crappy golf course into a beautiful experience can be done. Just take the drive to East Texas to Tempest Golf Club and see for yourself.

Sitting in the middle of a putting green is a monument and plaque to honor four local golf legends – Homero Blancas, Jacky Cupit, Buster Cupit and Roy Pace. It reads: Legends of East Texas Golf.

The feast for your senses will be immediate. A rolling landscape of green is a backdrop for a beautiful upscale clubhouse. A massive American flag rustles by sight and sound sitting atop a 205-foot pole and this Stars and Stripes is the third largest in the state measuring 80 feet long and 40 feet high. You can see it from any point on the golf course.

Goodbye to Southern Hills Golf Course It was back in 2016 that Arlington, Texas based golf course architect Jeffrey Brauer was given the project of transforming this location, named Southern Hills Golf Course, into a travel golf destination.

Then there’s Shallow Creek running like a ravine through the rolling property with a lining of iron ore landscape rocks – something that is unusual for East Texas’ normal sandy soil. There are lakes, creek carries and a couple of long wooden bridges.

“I’ve never seen a worse golf course on such a great site,” Brauer recalls. “I saw where a land planner attempted to lay out a golf course, but it was the worst golf course I’d ever seen. In essence it was a mess.”

Brauer noted: “No one wants to lose five $5 dollar golf balls during a round so I wanted to deliver a country club like golf course for a more municipal golf course price point and playability.

it all. There are some blind shots that require creativity, the elevation changes are fun, the greens are challenging but not crazy, and a Piney Woods experience is something you can’t get in Dallas.”

“I was given that task while the owner, Joe Bruno, a New Orleans attorney, wanted to fiddle with the clubhouse and a restaurant (Neptune’s Grille and Bar). He wanted to develop a menu better than just hot dogs. He also wanted a membership experience where an event didn’t shut out a day on the course for non-members.”

Speaking of that draw of travel golfers, Tempest is close enough for Louisiana golfers, like from Shreveport, and Dallas is only 90 minutes away.

Brauer also noted that 100 acres were designated for residential lots and off-course lots. “The owner agreed with me when I saw a potential for some great holes where home lots were. Six new holes were created and it made for some lots on high points that added the real estate value by millions.” Randy Wade, Tempest’s affable Director of Golf, is proud of multiple golf course characteristics. “Man, I love the layout Jeff created here. I think the rolling hills, not usual for East Texas, draws golfers back. You have

“I have to chuckle,” said Wade, when thinking about pandemic golf. “There was a time when Louisiana travelers weren’t supposed to come over the border, but some told me when the Texas Highway Patrol stopped them they’d just say they had business at Tempest Golf Club and they got to journey on.” Word of mouth has been Tempest’s best method of getting golfers to visit. “We believe Tempest has an upscale feel to it but it is priced accordingly. If golfers enjoy the golf experience they are going to come back and they will tell other golfers to come. “We are designed for private membership but semi-private is also encouraged. There’s a real estate opportunity for golfers

CLUB SELECTION who want to live on the golf course and we are going to aggressively move for more members and for the lot sales,” Wade said. The layout: fun and scenic The opening hole presents a carry over one of those Shallow Creek ravines, but it’s only about 370 yards from the upper tees with a dogleg left. Go through the fairway long and three bunkers could catch your tee shot. The elevated green isn’t that difficult with a wedge shot remaining. From the back tees it measures 7,057 yards at par 72 and my favorite holes were the par threes and the finale. The fourth hole is a drop shot of 157 yards from the back to a sombrero-shaped green over water and reeds with two bunkers back and left. If you pull your tee shot and the pin is right you have a lengthy putt. High Bridge takes you to No. 12, a very scenic par three of 186 yards from the tips over the creek, heavily wooded and uphill. Even with a little wind in your face the challenge is to get it there and the green has two levels making it even more of a test. Take plenty of club because you will need it. The final par three, No. 17, is another fun drop shot of 173 yards with the most difficult pin position just over a front right bunker. With the wind in our faces my group discovered it was tricky to get the right distance, but you should make par here. I really like the final hole. My group played it at about 400 yards downhill over a lake and you could have put a blanket over our tee shots. We made two pars and a birdie, but if you are hitting from the back tees it is 503 yards at par four. Tempest has also announced it will host the First Tee of the Piney Woods with details coming soon. Junior programs are also available with summer camps. The verdict: Don’t miss this golf course The result of the renovation is a brand new golf course with 12 rebuilt holes and only six in the original fairway corridors. “I tried to design a golf course that’s a little easier than what I would have done back in the ‘90s,” Brauer said. The team decided to go big or go home. “This had to be good enough to attract golfers from surrounding cities such as Dallas, Houston, and Shreveport.” It’s just a couple of miles from I-20. Mission accomplished. This is definitely a must play in Texas. Make the drive. You won’t be disappointed. 28 Golf Vacations • January 2022

SWEETSTUFF by Terry Ross

R1 Rangefinder

W

hen it comes to the latest in rangefinder technology, the R1 from PrecisionPro® Golf must be considered as the Maserati in distance measuring with the added features that make you feel like you have a caddie helping on every shot. Not only does this rangefinder give you quick and exact laser distances to your target with slope adjustments for uphill or downhill, but it also features game-changing MYSLOPE™ technology, the firstever personalized slope calculation that creates an adjusted distance specific to a player and their environment. The patented MYSLOPE™ algorithm combines a player’s unique ball data (launch angle, ball speed, spin rate) with environmental variables (temperature, altitude, humidity, etc.). The result is a game-changing level of accuracy applied to every course, club, and swing for a number specific to every player. The pleasant thing about this is that it is plug and play easy and fast to set up for something this technologically advanced--and can

be integrated very easily into a player’s pre-shout routine to get the most complete and accurate data possible. This smart rangefinder uses an app that will work on Android or iOS phones and pairs with the laser rangefinder to give you the best of both worlds—accurate laser measurement to the pin and GPS maps and yardages that have all the features of an electronic yardage book. The R1 does not require players to look at or use their phones during a round of golf. Instead, data is seamlessly relayed via Bluetooth from the Precision Pro Golf app to the unit, where all figures and measurements are displayed through the viewfinder. Beyond providing actual and MYSLOPE adjusted distances, with a push of a button the R1 will display yardages to the front, middle and back of the green. MYSLOPE functions can be easily disengaged for USGA-conforming play via a toggle on the side of the rangefinder. “Just over seven years ago we started Precision Pro with the goal of bringing budget-friendly rangefinders to the masses; now we are helping golfers in new, innovative ways,” noted Clay Hood, CEO of Precision Pro Golf. “The R1 Smart Rangefinder doesn’t just provide distances; it changes the definition of accuracy. It brings a level of insight the everyday golfer has never before had access to.” Besides being super easy to use, the R1 is light and fits easily in the palm of your hand, and the magnetic cart grip attaches the unit easily to any metal object for quick use. The unit also comes with a nice hard carrying case that clips easily to your golf bag. The R1’s crystal clarity is achieved through the enhanced LCD display, which provides 6x magnification to ensure ease of use. Additional features of the R1 include: Wind Assist™ that lets the player know how wind might potentially impact the distance of each shot; GPS Distances that are slope-adjusted to the front, center and back of the green; Target Acquisition Technology that makes it simple to lock on a target, even with shaky hands and Pulse Vibration that delivers a short burst to ensure players are shooting the flag and not at another target. There is even a Find My Precision Pro notification for the player when their rangefinder is missing—and it reminds them to secure it when the round is over. The R1 also features a rechargeable battery that can quickly and easily keep the unit fresh.

Remedy+

E

very year there seems to be an increased emphasis on health and wellness, and with the calendar turning another page, 2022 looks to be a year of exciting new opportunities for golfers when it comes to supplements, topicals and snacks. The introduction of CBD products into the golf and athletic marketplace several years ago to help players feel better, relieve pain and perform to their highest level has been a huge boost to many players who report feeling better and suffer less muscle and joint tightness due to the repetitive motion of golf. Now, a new company in Colorado has taken CBD and expanded the selection to an entire line of premium plant-based products to span the range of what players need to feel good and play well. Remedy+ is going far beyond the typical applications of CBD-e.g., relieving stress or muscle aches. They are combining a blend of scientifically formulated ingredients that address a broad spectrum of needs, including pain management, clarity, focus, energy and sleep. Unlike their competitors, each of the five Remedy+ products utilize a different blend of hemp-derived and powerful plant-based ingredients-in addition to CBD-- to achieve better results. “We are focused on producing products that help country club athletes, fitness enthusiasts and weekend warriors alike to ‘punch above their weight’ and ‘below their age’,” said Tom Kurz, a co-founder of Remedy Products LLC. “Addressing these performance challenges is why we started Remedy+. Delivering on our promise and witnessing the positive impact our products have on people’s lives is what inspires us to carry on.”

www.golfvacationsmag.com

In evaluating the products, the company has achieved what it has set out to do by creating a variety of products designed to relax, perform and recover—and they work very well for their intended purpose. The Drop is a tincture designed to get the day started with a blend of broad-based spectrum CBD oil, MCT Oil, organic essential orange oil and organic essential cinnamon oil that improves the immune system, digestive system and reduces stress. The Shot is a two-ounce drink that comes in a pocket-sized bottle that looks a lot like the popular 5-Hour Energy shots—but healthier-with a proprietary blend of nano broad-spectrum CBD, vitamin B-12, caffeine, ginseng and other powerful plant-based ingredients and terpenes that helps give a boost when working out or getting ready for a round. The Bar is a chocolate berry protein snack that is low in calories and contains no CBD but is loaded with Hemp protein and packed with essential nutrients that enhance performance and boost physical health. It contains nine essential amino acids, making it a “complete protein.” It looks and tastes like a brownie and is the perfect size to carry in your golf bag. The Rub is a premium salve with a cool alpine scent and a CBD topical specially formulated for active adults seeking to manage symptoms associated with stress from physical activities. The Cap is a CBD soft gel formulated for recovery from a physically demanding day and to promote sleep. With a number of natural ingredients, the Cap also includes Curcumin, which is a natural antiinflammatory and potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals that lead to aging and disease. These capsules are designed to be taken before going to bed. Remedy+ products are available for sale online on the company website as well at Amazon and other quality online retailers. They can also be found on the shelves of select natural product retailers, country clubs, racquet clubs, fitness studios and physical therapy For more information, visit the company website at: https://www. myremedyproducts.com
