Kent, England – Golf in Kent is offering golfers an outstanding Castles & Courses Tour of the Garden of England that combines some stunning golf courses - two of which have royal status – with outings to some of the most striking castles in the country.

Ascona, Switzerland – Giardino Ascona (www.giardino-ascona.ch) has become Ticino’s premier golf resort as it now enjoys direct access to the course at Golf Ascona, allowing guests to roll out of bed and straight onto the fairway.

His folksy, down-home native Texan storytelling expertise fits as perfectly as a seasoned cowboy on a 50-year-old saddle. And he loves the beautiful, wildflower strewn golf-course landscapes of the Texas Hill Country.

Burn Up The Course In Scottsdale

Sure, summers are hot in Scottsdale. But that’s no reason to stay inside, especially if you’re an avid golfer. That’s because Scottsdale’s courses slash rates by as much as 60 percent off peak season, which means you can play the “World’s Finest Golf Destination” at rock-bottom prices.

Kulm Hotel St. Moritz Offers ‘All you Can Play’ Golf

SWITZERLAND – This year, for the first time ever, golfers staying four nights or more at the worldfamous Kulm Hotel St. Moritz (www. kulm.com) can take advantage of an ‘All you can Play’ offer, with complimentary green fees at the two 18-hole golf courses at Samedan and Zuoz, as well as the Kulm’s very own 9-hole course set in the hotel’s grounds. The Engadine Valley, where St. Moritz is located, has gained a reputation as a golfer’s paradise thanks to the unequalled Alpine panoramas of fertile green landscapes, dramatic mountain backdrops and deep blue summer skies. Over 120 years ago, in 1891, the Kulm Golf St. Moritz became the first 9-hole course in Switzerland, nestled among trees on the high Alps with spectacular vistas over Lake St. Moritz. A course upgrade in 2001 by local designer, Mario Verdieri, improved the greens and brought the layout up to date with the requirements of today’s golfers. The location of this par 3 course makes is physically challenging though refreshment is not far away in the hotel’s Chesa al Parc

restaurant. Two years later, in 1893, Samedan became the first 18-hole golf course in Switzerland to open its doors. A classic, parkland course, Samedan is set on gently rolling terrain and offers spectacular views from the valley up to the surrounding majestic peaks. It features broad fairways flanked by ancient, giant larch trees, some of which are over 700 years old, whilst numerous water features of little lakes and streams ensure it is a testing challenge for any golfer. Samedan is just a 10-minute drive from the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz. In 2003, these two courses were joined by the Zuoz-Madulain course just a 20-minute drive from St. Moritz. The combination of undulating fairways, multiple elevation changes, receptive greens and its attractive setting so close to nature have made it extremely popular with golfers. In contrast to the golf course in Samedan with its links character, level terrain, and plentiful lakes and streams, Zuoz-Madulain is landscaped, spacious and surrounded by forest. In addition to complimentary green fees at all three courses, guests staying at the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz have unlimited free access Kulm Hotel St. Moritz

to the state-of-the-art, 2,000 sq m Kulm Spa St. Moritz, a wellbeing sports programme that changes daily, tennis courts, and all the open mountain railways in the Engadin/St. Moritz region and public transportation in the valley (bus and Rhaetian railway). To qualify for the ‘All you can Play’ offer, simply book four consecutive nights at the Kulm Hotel St. Moritz between 24 June and 3 September 2016; rates start from CHF535 (approx £380) for two people sharing a double/twin room on a half-board basis. Reservations can be made by phone on +41 (0) 81 836 80 00 or by e-mail via reservations@kulm.com.

Kent

By JD Latorre

K

ent, England – Golf in Kent is offering golfers an outstanding Castles & Courses Tour of the Garden of England that combines some stunning golf courses - two of which have royal status – with outings to some of the most striking castles in the country.

For more coastal golf, head to Littlestone (another of Kent’s championship links gems) just outside Romney Marsh or visit Etchinghill, a typical Kent course set in stunning, downland countryside that poses a demanding challenge to golfers of all ages and abilities.

Any golfer making a trip to Kent’s east coast will be spoilt for choice when it comes to spectacular golf thanks to its fine collection of championship links overlooking the English Channel.

Then you can make your way into the Kent countryside to visit one of Kent’s most famous castles, the romantic and magnificent Hever Castle. Once the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, it now boasts a stunning parkland golf course in the Hever Estate, thanks to a more recent owner, William Waldorf Astor. You can also enjoy an overnight stay at the castle’s stunning 5-star B&B accommodation in the Astor Wing, with luxurious furnishings and the castle grounds exclusively yours at night.

Royal St George’s, founded in 1887 and laid out by William Laidlaw Purves, is recognized as one of England’s top golf courses. Testament to the quality of this championship links, Royal St George’s has hosted The Open Championship on 14 occasions, most recently in 2011 and remains on the current Open venue roster. Neighbouring Prince’s Golf Club comprises of three excellent nines and is an ideal place to spend the night with its golf-focused facilities and stunning views across the sea.

Not far away lies Leeds Castle, known as “the loveliest castle in the world”, which is surrounded by a picturesque moat and charming nine-hole golf course that was built in 1924 in the 500 acres of estate woodland.

Further down the coast you will find Royal Cinque Ports, another stunning championship links and Open Championship host in 1909 and 1920. Regarded by many as one of the finest links in the world, Deal (as it is often referred to) has been home of the Halford Hewitt, the largest amateur tournament in the world, since 1924.

More golf awaits at the Tudor Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club, a short distance from Leeds Castle. This majestic parkland golf course was designed by Donald Steel, one of Britain’s finest course architects. It is an exhilarating showcase of his skills with 6,085 yards of beautifully varied holes set against this picturesque corner of Kent.

To the north of this magnificent links trio lies the clifftop course at North Foreland which boasts spectacular views of the iconic White Cliffs and English Channel from every hole. This fine championship course’s broad fairways disguise a tricky layout thanks to strategically-placed bunkers that lie in wait.

Round off your stay with a visit to Lullingstone Castle in the north west, which dates back to the 15th century and whose former silk farm produced the silk for Queen Elizabeth’s coronation robes. Nearby Lullingstone Park is another picturesque parkland course that has magnificent views of the castle whilst nearby the London Golf Club has two 18 hole layouts, The International and The Heritage designed by Jack Nicklaus. Both are pure downland courses that, interestingly, demand a links-style approach.

In between rounds, take time out to visit one of the most famous fortresses in the world – Dover Castle. Founded in the 11th century, Dover Castle is perched on the iconic White Cliffs and has been described as the ‘Key to England’ due to its strategic defensive position over the centuries. Visitors can explore the Great Keep or head underground into the historic wartime tunnels where WWII military Operation Dynamo was masterminded. Both Walmer and Deal Castles are also close by and form part of the historic Cinque Ports defences, built by former monarchs to guard the shore of England. Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother was a regular visitor in her role as Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports.

From Bed to Fairway

Ticino’s Giardino Ascona Hotel Enjoys Direct

A

scona, Switzerland – Giardino Ascona (www.giardino-ascona. ch) has become Ticino’s premier golf resort as it now enjoys direct access to the course at Golf Ascona, allowing guests to roll out of bed and straight onto the fairway. Giardino Ascona; Golf Ascona Giardino Ascona and Golf Ascona, set on the banks of Lake Maggiore in the Italian-speaking canton of southern Switzerland, benefit from a unique micro-climate that creates temperate, balmy weather that allows the golf playing season to run until well into October. Established in 1928 as a 9-hole layout, Golf Ascona soon became a meeting place for local businessmen, wealthy tourists and celebrities who chose this little slice of paradise at the foothills of the Alps as their regular golf spot. Soon, the course became known as “the nicest 9 holes in Europe”. The popularity of the club led to its expansion to 18 holes with the help of renowned golf course architects Harry Colt and Charles Alison, who created a classic, tree-lined parkland course that weaves its way down to one of Europe’s most famous lakes against a backdrop of magnificent Alpine mountains. The par-4 16th and par-3 17th holes run directly alongside the picturesque lake whilst the rest of the course meanders through avenues of mature trees and expansive but shallow bunkers that defend many of the tricky, undulating greens.

Golf in Ticino In 1960, the Patriziato of Ascona (local governing body) took over the lease on the golf club and, to this day, the City of Ascona manages the club though the feel of the clubhouse remains very much that of a traditional, private golf establishment. Since then, Golf Ascona has received many accolades, including the title of “Best Golf Course in Switzerland” in 1999. Right next door to the golf club stands the luxurious, 72-room Giardino Ascona, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The hotel offers fine dining in its 2 Michelin-starred Ecco Restaurant where Rolf Fliegauf (one of Switzerland’s most decorated chefs) resides, a less formal restaurant known as Aphrodite and a bar overlooking a lush Mediterranean garden, as well as extensive fitness facilities, including a dipiù spa. The property is the ideal retreat after golf as it offers a rest and rehabilitation programme, ‘Golf Perfekt’, which is designed specifically for golfers in mind and run in collaboration with well-known physiotherapist Cornelia Albrecht. After a thorough 90-minute body check-up, Cornelia accompanies her clients onto the golf course to get a detailed picture of the rotation, stability and coordination of their bodies as they play so that she can then provide advice and individually-tailored exercises to suit each golfer’s own body and movement. Cornelia looks to resolve any issues

Access to Golf Ascona affecting player performance and, with her input, many golfers have managed to increase their driving capability considerably. After a session with Cornelia, a dipiù massage in the hotel’s spa is the ideal way to relax and rest tired muscles, and is included in the package, which is priced at CHF355 (approx Euros326/£234). For those just wanting to play a round of golf, the cost of a green fee at Golf Ascona is CHF130 (approx Euros 117/£90) during the week and CHF150 (approx Euros135/£104) at weekends/public holidays, with Giardino Ascona guests qualifying for a 10% reduction on those rates. Keen golfers wanting to play a bit more golf have the option of trying out two other courses in the area. Golf Gerre Losone, which opened in 2001, offers a complete contrast to Ascona Golf; it is a modern, open and very challenging course thanks to a number of tight fairways, unnerving OB possibilities and several rock-lined streams and ponds that demand good course management and accurate shot making. A few kilometres away, the Golf Club Lugano course is laid out over gently undulating terrain that is bisected by the River Magliasina that often brings water into play. The tight, technical layout with numerous bunkers is tempered by large greens, whilst azaleas and rhododendrons add splashes of colour on various holes. For further information on staying and playing in Ascona, visit www.giardino-ascona.ch/en/news/golf-perfekt or, to book the hotel and/or a ‘Golf Perfekt’ package, call the hotel on +41 91 785 8888 or email welcome@ giardino-ascona.ch.

Escondido Bridge, River to No. 10 and Smoke Shack

H

ORSESHOE BAY, TX – At Escondido Golf & Lake Club, Spike Dykes, former Texas Tech University football coach is a fixture.

– the famous bluebonnets of Texas are everywhere in the spring and the golf course is blanketed by them.

His folksy, down-home native Texan storytelling expertise fits as perfectly as a seasoned cowboy on a 50-year-old saddle. And he loves the beautiful, wildflower strewn golf-course landscapes of the Texas Hill Country.

In 2008 the New York Times proclaimed the region as the No. 1 place to travel and vacation in the summer.

But as friendly and personable as Dykes is he chuckles about seeing new golfers at Escondido Golf & Lake Club that includes an upscale private Tom Fazio design built in 2004. “We just golf here the way we like it,” drawls Dykes. “We can just show up without a tee-time and play. But if the word gets out about how spectacular this place is we’ll have to share it with more golfers.” Escondido is the Spanish word meaning mysterious, hidden and secret. Dykes shares the secret. He has hosted countless members of the college football coaching fraternity in a round of golf at Escondido. “All of them say this is the greatest place ever and why haven’t I heard about it?” Dykes said. Roy Bechtol, golf-course designer from Austin, agrees with Dykes’ praise. Bechtol assisted Fazio in the design and routing. “I’ve always said Escondido is a comeback golf course. Once you play it you want to come back as soon as you can. I’m always excited to come here.”

Just a few of many amenities for members

Escondido Golf & Lake Club is located in the heart of the Texas Hill Country just outside Marble Falls, about 45 minutes northwest of Austin and an hour and a half from San Antonio. It’s a beautiful drive. You pass rocky limestone terrain in a ranching region covered with live oaks, cedars, prickly pear cactus, wildlife and wildflowers

18 Golf Vacations • June 2016

The architecture is also stunning. Is it Spanish-Mediterranean and Italianinfluenced Tuscany? Whatever -- it is stately and native Texas limestone is featured everywhere in mansions, walkways, and stairs in the development’s 550 wooded acres. Escondido features a marina that permits direct access to Lake LBJ, which is approximately 22 miles long – one of the largest constant level lakes in the United States. Your membership includes the Lake Club with club-owned watercraft for member use: pontoon boat, wakeboard/ski boat, jet skis, kayaks and stand-up paddle boards. The Lake Club also has full service dining, covered-roof fishing, pool side cabanas with flat screen TVs and lots of activities for children. The limestone clubhouse, called The Great House, is 30,000-square feet of hospitality. Great dining, luxury lounge and locker room facilities, private dining room with Escondido Wine Cellar and golf shop. Valet parking and a fire pit greet you along with attendants who will call you by your name and speed your arrival. When you return for your vehicle it will be clean. Members without a home can bunk down in the Club Residences, a private collection of estate homes for vacation stays. Another option are the fully furnished, four-bedroom, limestone La Cascada golf cottages– flat screen TVs seemed around every turn – even out on the porch where you can have morning coffee and perhaps see whitetail deer, roadrunners or a wild turkey hen with youngsters following behind.

Escondido: The golf course

Check out the greeting blackboard at No. 1 tee box. It forewarns you that the Champions Bermuda greens are rolling 12 today. With Fazio’s twist and turns putting surfaces you will do good not to log numerous three putts.

Escondido #18

Also check out the grasses (great conditions everywhere by the way): Jamur Zoysia tees and rough and Zeon Zoysia in the lush fairways. “My criteria for a golf course?” asks Bechtol. “It has to be fun and pretty. This is a solid golf experience – it is an easy walk and is beautiful. All the par 3s and par 5s are different with the wind direction. “It has a kick-ass finish with a great long par 3 at 15 (252 yards) and a beautiful par 5 to finish (595 yards) with the Pecan Creek to your left all the way past the green and The Great House on your right.” There’s an exposed granite dome sprawling behind the 12th green, the culmination of a 426-yard par 4. Take a peek at another granite dome to the left of the tee box on 13. Don’t miss the Smoke Shack located at the turn next to the 10th tee box. Try the smoked beef brisket tacos with pico de gallo or a mango salsa. Other comfort station goodies are there including chocolate chip cookies to get you set for the back nine.

Escondido Finishing Hole

Even the practice facility at Escondido is special and has a name -- La Hacienda. There’s a short game area with multiple sand traps, hitting areas and slopes for your wedge game. Move to the large driving range that offers hitting bays with or against the prevailing breezes. Lob short shots to a series of practice greens or let your driver go with the Pro V1 practice balls. Move to the far side of the range for a quieter experience with fairway bunkers and various slopes to help you prepare for whatever awaits. Located near the first tee, a huge practice putting green offers some of the smoothest and fastest greens in the Southwest. The year-round quality of the turf, the level of teaching under the tutelage of the golf pros or Director of Instruction Buck Mayers, and the exceptional gameimprovement facility in La Hacienda are yours as a member.

Pecan Creek flows from Lake LBJ, Colorado River

Escondido hosts charity events and competitions. The Texas Golf Association’s Mid-Am was held here in 2014 and this year the TGA State Senior Am is set for September. The club is wholly owned by its membership, comprised of like-minded individuals sharing common values and sensibilities. With over 300 current members, Escondido is accepting applications for new members. COTTSDALE, AZ – Sure, summers are hot in Scottsdale. But that’s no reason to stay inside, especially if you’re an avid golfer. That’s because Scottsdale’s courses slash rates by as much as 60 percent off peak season, which means you can play the “World’s Finest Golf Destination” at rock-bottom prices. The key to success is to play early, wear sunblock, drink lots of water and spend the rest of the day lounging poolside or enjoying of Scottsdale’s myriad indoor attractions. So, where should you tee off this summer? Here’s a sampling of our favorites. Higher Ground To keep things cool, elevation matters, especially in the mornings and evenings. The Boulders, one of Scottsdale’s most iconic retreats, sits at just over 2,500 feet, making morning and evening temperatures dramatically cooler. Plus, the exceptional views and famed rock formations add an element of natural beauty and drama that cannot be beaten. And when you’re not on the course, you and your little one can enjoy Fairmont’s family friendly summer amenities, including fishing in a stocked pond, barreling down a 200-foot waterslide at the Sonoran Splash pool, and experiencing the Trailblazers Family Adventure Center. Rates start at $129 per night. Show off your skills on the course and in the pool with The Westin Kierland Resort & Spa’s Smash & Splash package. The package includes one round of golf at Kierland Golf Club, where you’ll be treated to an air-conditioned golf cart when you’re not chipping, putting and driving. After you wrap up your round, dive into the property’s Adventure Pool complex, home of the resort’s premier pool, lazy river and waterslide. Stay and play for the day for $59 per adult and $39 per child. Extend the fun with room rates starting at $149 per night. For golfers who like to split their time between family and the course, Four Seasons Resort Scottsdale at Troon North is the ticket. Swing away at Four Season’s neighboring Troon North Golf Club with rates starting at $59 while the rest of your crew enjoys the resort. Keep your better half happy with an impromptu spa treatment while the buckaroos swim, play ping pong, learn about the natural environment, and decorate cookies in the Kids For All Seasons club. SWEETSTUFF W

ith the warm summer months upon us, one of the nation’s leading designers of lifestyle and golf apparel—Antigua—has hit retailers with its latest Spring/Summer Men’s Performance-72 Fashion Golf Wear Collection, featuring some exciting new colors and styles. The direction for Antigua’s 2016 men’s fashion golf wear reflects current trends taking shape in fashion, from couture to ready-towear. The palette influence has swung from the previous season’s electrified brights to now expressing the most up-to-date and utmost simplistic bright color stories found universally in fashion products from shoes, bags and belts to men’s and women’s golf wear. The primary color story is succinctly 2016, and propels this new men’s collection. What makes this season’s color palette so unique is not the individual use of any of these colors -- years past have seen a bright red included in a color story or a bright green as a complement to an otherwise soft palette – it is the simultaneous use of all of, and only the primary colors. This season’s collection of golf wear styles mirrors the momentum that fashion giants and forecasters alike have committed to as a representation of this year’s fashion ideal. “Antigua’s expanded its wind shirt category for the Spring/Summer ’16 collection,” noted Sean Gregg, Vice President of Product Development and Marketing Support for Antigua. “We’ve developed styles that appeal to various needs and demographics, alike. Interlock knits lined with a brushed tricot mesh

knit are bonded together with a water-resistant membrane, for comfort and wind protection.” The Element Vest takes the irregular heather knit pattern from self-collar polo style Element, and is the surface fabric making up the three-layer bonded vest. Contrasted simply by a solid inset at the top shoulder, this is a stylish and functional added layer of warmth. Coup is a refreshing update to the shortsleeve wind shirt. Using multiple colors of fabric, zipper pocket and placket trim, the quarter-zip, short-sleeve pullover wind shirt has been established as an “every season” wind wear staple. As the trend dictates that short sleeves no longer encroach on the wearer’s elbow, Coup accommodates the trend by allowing freer mobility. Paragon is a fresh addition to previous successes in Antigua’s wind wear lineup. This virtual shell styling utilizes the multi-layer fabric developed for Element Vest and Coup, and is interpreted as a raglan sleeved quarterzip, color-blocked wind shirt. Updated detailing comes in the form of color blocking, as the sleeves share the twisted neutral heathers seen throughout the collection and is offset by the primary colors that represent the garment’s body. The fabric’s stretch allows for comfortable movement while simultaneously insulating the golfer. In addition, Antigua’s Spring 2016 Men’s Performance-72 Fashion Golf Wear Collection includes both of the company’s state-of-the-art moisture-wicking technologies. DESERT DRY™ is a moisture-wicking technology created exclusively for Antigua, to

absorb and wick moisture quickly and evenly. The Desert Dry product family includes any garment using a fabric weight of 150 gsm or heavier. Typically, fabrics over 150 gsm offer more body and improved drape for the customers who don’t like the ultra-lightweight “clingy” fabrics currently in the market. DESERT DRY™ XTRA-LITE (D2XL) combines Antigua’s exclusive DESERT DRY™ moisture-wicking feature with specially constructed ultra-light fabrics for maximum wicking performance and optimum comfort. The D2XL product family includes any garment using a fabric weight of 150 gsm or lighter. These fabrics have been specially engineered to be lightweight while not being overly sheer. This is possible through the use of ultra-fine yarns which gives a fabric more body while not dramatically increasing the weight. Headquartered in Peoria, Arizona, The Antigua Group, through its license sports division, holds license agreements with the National Football League (NFL), Major League Baseball (MLB), Minor League Baseball (Melba), Major League Soccer (MLS), the National Hockey League (NHL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA), Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), along with numerous American universities and colleges for men’s, women’s and children’s apparel, headwear and luggage. he importance of sun protection while playing has never been more recognized in the golfing community, and Boulder Colorado-based Wallaroo Hat Company has taken this trend to the next level with a stylish and effective collection of Aussie-inspired hats that give outstanding sun protection, look and feel great and are very travel-friendly. With a UPF rating of 50+ and tested in the harsh sun of Australia, Wallaroo hats block up to 97.8% of the sun’s UV rays, providing a great amount of protection. All hats are light, comfortable and adjustable, allowing golfers to swing at ease. These hats keep their shape—even when packed in a suitcase and are very comfortable and functional for summer days under the sun. “Today, the need for serious protection from the sun’s damaging ultra violet rays is more apparent than ever,” said Lenya Shore, co-founder of Wallaroo Hat Company. “Skin cancer is reaching epidemic proportions in America. We are now number two in the world and it is critical everyone takes

to ensure one size fits all. The Wallaroo Hat Company also donates 1% of its total profits to skin cancer research, education and prevention in the United States. Skin cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the United States. In fact, melanoma, the deadliest form of skin cancer, is now the most common type of cancer among women ages 25 to 29, making it extremely important to be mindful and take preventative measures in protecting oneself from the sun at a young age. A study done by professors at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in the summer of 2008 found that twice as many cases of scalp and neck melanoma prove to be fatal than cases of melanoma on the extremities. Wallaroo hats are available in catalogues, on-line and in more than 2,000 outdoor, resort, golf, gardening and boutique retails stores throughout the United States. responsibility for preventing the further spread of skin cancer!” Shore and her other co-founder Stephanie Carter started the company back in 1999 after a trip to Australia where they found the Aussie secret to sun protection and from there have developed 41 spring/ summer styles available in solid fabrics as well as tropical prints and neutrals. Signature features include crushable fabric for durability and pliable two to 4 1/2inch brims for maximum sun protection. Most Wallaroo hats feature an internal or external drawstring

aking a cue from what long-distance runners like in a performance sock, Swiftwick sock company has introduced its MAXUS line of performance socks that feature a more cushioned footbed that reduces slippage. This is not only a feature that runners love to reduce the chance of blisters, but golfers can benefit from as well for a more secure fit in the shoe—especially during the swing. “We wanted to expand our offering to include a style designed for

athletes who prefer a higher volume sock for their runs,” said Chuck Smith, president of Swiftwick. “It was important to our team that the sock retained the qualities that are core to all of our products--superior fit and moisture management. We feel the Swiftwick MAXUS hits these marks.” To achieve maximum cushion without losing the moisture management benefits of a Swiftwick sock, the team utilized new fibers with a unique structure that wick moisture 40 percent better than competitive high-volume materials. With this innovative technology, the wearer will experience superior wicking performance without the chemical treatments used by some manufacturers. In addition to this new material, the Swiftwick MAXUS is also constructed using Swiftwick’s signature Olefin fibers for superior strength and breathability. Another benefit comes from the sock’s Managed Compression™ and its Linked Toe technology for a blister-free experience and a sock the feels and fits like a fine glove. “We are proud to develop a sock line that reinforces our commitment to creating USAmade, high quality products,” said David Fitzgerald, vice president of sales. “The creation of the MAXUS gives our dealers the ability to meet the continual demand of their customers.” The new Swiftwick MAXUS line is available in four colors in both zero and oneinch cuff heights.
