PGA Tour Hall of Famer and designer Lanny Wadkins said the word is “wow”. Scan a vista that reaches miles past the Rio Grande River into Mexico, hit pause, linger and recall the rich history. And on most days you can reload a few times. The hole is a blast to play for one, and historically this is a place where Gen. John “Black Jack” Pershing commanded a U.S. Cavalry Post when Pancho Villa and his revolutionaries threatened settlers in far West Texas. “Crossing” comes from Pershing chasing the bandito and his men back across the river. Black Jack never caught Pancho. Lajitas, meaning “little flat rocks” is also a place where Comanches camped out, staging raids into Mexico along the Rio Grande River for

horses and silver. And it became part of the pony path named The Great Comanche War Trail. And now this vast land is home to Texas’ No. 1 public golf course (7,413 yards) and Lajitas Resort & Spa in the massive Big Bend country of far West Texas. This is also home to the rugged Chihuahuan Desert, Chisos Mountains and Big Bend National Park. To say Wadkins designed a winner is oversimplification. This is definitely a crescendo golf experience. You finish one beautiful hole and you climb to the next elevated tee. “There’s no golf course like this in Texas and no land like this in Texas with the incredible Big Bend scenery and great golf challenges,” Wadkins said. Just for grins I picked the back tee of the extreme elevated tee par-5 eighth, 649 yards, and attempted to bomb one 200 feet down to the fairway. With dormant grass scooting as fast as a stimp meter at Augusta I hit one as square as I could. Slight draw – I pushed the button on my GPS and headed downhill. When I rolled up to my ball the screen read 305. Oh, yeah. I love this golf course.

No matter what time of year you come here the golf is entertaining and the resort experience is like visiting another era. A little more history of Lajitas Golf Resort and olden days

For all the beauty, however, the No. 1 handicap hole will slap you upside the head. No. 7, a 444-yard, par 4 has an approach over water that presents itself like a stair-stepping stone river bed with collection area that continues past the hole down into a creek bed cart path heading to the next hole. The green is sloped and slanted from front to back toward the water and if you go over the green a double bogey is the norm. When you start driving to the eighth stop and put your hand in the water – it is a hot spring that was redirected to present the water feature. Wadkins selected paspalum turf, one developed to withstand seaside salt and extreme conditions. At an elevation of 2,200 feet, the temperature is a perfect 70 most off-season days, but for summer you might have plenty of 100-degree days. Don’t worry there’s plenty of water stations and GPS on the carts. A huge driving range waits for those who like to practice along with putting green and short-game workers.

The history doesn’t stop with the old trading post pro shop (with bullet holes in the walls), the next door Longhorn Museum, and it didn’t stop with the old barracks turned into lodging, or a beer-drinking goat named Clay Henry who was once the honorary town mayor. Eighteen-hole golf came here in 2006 when designers Roy Bechtol and Randy Russell of Austin opened The Ambush at Lajitas. It was a fun layout, mainly laid out in the Rio Grande’s flood plain with a novelty par-3 hole where you hit over the river in to Mexico to a funneled hole location (with no retrieval of your golf ball). But disaster stuck in 2008 with a 100-year flood event that destroyed the golf course. Enter Wadkins and a new history emerged. n addition to being a golf destination, the Palm Springs area of Southern California has taken on a reputation over the later years as a mecca for festivals and concerts. The Coachella Music & Arts Festival and Stagecoach Country Music Festival during the spring season have certainly left their mark on this area known as the Coachella Valley during the spring with their weekends of concerts. But now, the PGA Tour stop in January that has been around since 1960, is taking on a new identity with a heavier accent on music, great food, wine, and spirits – to go along with watching the best golfers in the world play for millions. Under the direction of Executive Director Jeff Sanders and his colleagues at Lagardère Sports, who were given the task of remaking the venerable event by its founding charity last fall, the Career Builder Challenge has added loads of hospitality opportunities for fans and two days of first-rate concerts immediately following play on Friday and Saturday of tournament week. As the first PGA Tour event of the year played in the continental United States, the Career Builder Challenge has a history of getting the golfing year off to a start in this section of the world—and it is now setting the table for the concert season in this resort area that has become famous for music and festivals. This past January the Career Builder kicked off its Concert Series with performances by rock bands Huey Lewis and the News and the Goo Goo Dolls on consecutive days on the driving range on the home course of the Career Builder— the PGA West Stadium Course in La Quinta—as thousands of enthusiastic fans got a dose of the world’s best golfers and great music at one stop. Two bands that have sold more than 32 million albums combined under sunny skies and into the evening as professional golf turned into a festival for both locals and vacationers. And, of course, on Sunday a champion was crowned as Jon Rahm, the second-ranked player in the world—beat Andrew Landry in a fourhole playoff after they both finished 72 holes at 22-under par. Not a bad way to end a week of great golf and music.

ne of the more unique and useful tools to hit the market recently to improve one’s golf game very quickly is not a new club or golf ball. It is one of the smallest digital cameras on the market today and its accompanying software that can make practice sessions more productive and valuable than ever before. The Live View Golf Digital Swing Mirror (DSM™) utilizes two old concepts with the latest technology to give players something that they can use inside, on the driving range or even on a trip to help improve their swing and keep all aspects of it in synch. First of all, mirrors have been used by teachers and golf students for many years, as have video cameras. But mirrors are bulky and fragile, certainly don’t record anything by themselves and aren’t something you are going to lug around in a golf bag. Video is available on your smartphone these days, but it has its limitations and certainly doesn’t match what the Live View Golf software can do. The Live View camera is less than 4” high, 2½” wide and ¾” deep and comes in a handy

carrying case that easily fits in a walking golf bag—or a pocket, while the optional LivPod flexible tripod stand for the camera is equally small but can be used to mount the camera on your golf bag, a door handle or even on top of a chair. But for all the innovative design of the camera—the best part of Live View is the App--and what it can show you about your swing. The camera can be paired with an iPhone or Android smartphone— or even better yet, an iPad or Kindle for a larger viewing surface. With these in place, you can practice part of your swing while watching yourself (just like in a mirror) from any angle, record your swings (and even email them to an instructor) and watch your swing frame-by-frame with this excellent proprietary software. Because much of the golf swing happens behind a player’s back, it is almost impossible to know if the objective of making a particular swing is being met. In order to change a player’s swing, it is imperative to monitor each movement to ensure that the intended swing matches the actual swing. James Sieckmann, a Golf Magazine top 100/ Golf Digest Top 50 Instructor and author of several golf instruction books, notes that “The fundamental problem in golf is the difference between what a player feels and what is real...” And one quick view with this program can show what needs to be corrected very quickly. To bridge the gap between feel and real, a key learning tool for many elite players is the mirror. Because the feedback in a mirror is instantaneous, players can verify the real club position against their internal swing feel and make very fine distinctions as to what the intended swing position really feels like. The app also provides additional benefits by transferring swing analysis tools back into the live video feed, thereby creating templates that make learning a new swing as simple as tracing lines and matching body positions.
