On October 11, 2019, Wynn Resort began offering something special for every Las Vegas-bound air passenger lucky enough to choose a window seat. For the first time since 2000, passengers observing the Vegas skyline witnessed an 18-hole championship golf course on The Strip…. all compliments of Wynn.

by Dave McKibben

It wasn’t until the third hole that I began to understand the significance of this sunny and crisp October day, which marked the grand reopening of the iconic Wynn Golf Club on the Las Vegas Strip.

by David R. Holland

When you snowbird toward Phoenix-Scottsdale this fall and winter don’t forget about We-Ko-Pa’s 36-hole award-winning complex. And certainly don’t forget about it when a new state-of-the art We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort opens next summer.

Tee It High, Let It Fly Golf Package Highlights Daytona Beach’s Winter Offerings

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. — As golfers in large swaths of the country begin to dread the onset of winter, one of Daytona Beach’s most popular stay-and-play packages is enticing players to visit the Central Florida hotspot. The “Tee it High and Let it Fly” golf package offers players a three-night, threeround deal featuring oceanfront accommodations, memorable golf and a respite from cold. The deal is highlighted by golf at Cypress Head, Plantation Bay Golf & Country Club and Palm Harbor Golf Club and starts at just $397. Cypress Head, an Arthur Hills design, is one of the area’s hidden gems. The course has been thriving since a 2015 renovation project that featured new greens, and the Kemper Sports managed property is renowned for the quality of its conditions throughout the year. The par 72 layout is highlighted by the 14th hole, a stunning dogleg left that presents golfers a risk-reward decision as they decide how much of the dogleg they want to challenge.

The “Tee it High and Let it Fly” offer also provides golfers the rare opportunity to play Plantation Bay, a private 45-hole facility. The package includes a round at Plantation Bay’s Prestwick Course, a shotmaker’s layout that will deliver a “member for a day” experience. After the final putt drops, golfers will be delighted to stay at the Hyatt Place Oceanfront, a 4.5-star property that offers guests a beautiful view of the “World’s Most Famous Beach” and a host of amenities. Daytona Beach’s idyllic weather and an outstanding selection of golf courses make it a near perfect winter destination. From November through May, the area’s average high temperatures range from a low of 68 degrees Fahrenheit in January to a high of 85 in May, highlighting the appeal of the area’s subtropical climate. While the “Tee it High and Let it Fly” deal is one of the Daytona Beach golf scene’s most popular, it’s hardly alone. The Daytona Beach area is home to more than 20 golf courses that can be packaged, along with oceanfront accommodations, to create countless possible golf trips. For more information, visit DaytonaBeach.golf.

Eleven Of Myrtle Beach’s Premier Courses Go Wall-toWall Green In 2020 MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Founders Group International, Myrtle Beach’s leading golf course ownership group, has overseeded 11 courses wall-to-wall, ensuring players will enjoy lush green grass throughout the winter and the area’s ever-popular spring season. FGI overseeded tee boxes, fairways, rough and greens at TPC Myrtle Beach, Long Bay Club, World Tour, King’s North at Myrtle Beach National, the Palmetto and PineHills courses at Myrtlewood, Wing Wing Avocet, Tradition Club, River Club, Willbrook Plantation and Pawleys Plantation. TPC Myrtle Beach has overseeded the last four years to ensure the layout was in peak condition to host the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship, and the reception made FGI’s decision to expand its overseeding plans much easier. Myrtle Beach enjoys good golf weather throughout the year, but the Bermudagrass goes dormant when the summer heat recedes. The dormant grass continues to provide quality conditions but golfers covet green grass. For more information, visit www.FoundersGroupInternational.com.

PGA Tour Invests In Golfbreaks To Accelerate Its Global Expansion

The PGA TOUR and Golfbreaks, announced last week a strategic partnership where the PGA TOUR has taken a minority shareholding in Golfbreaks Limited, the UK parent company. This investment marks the PGA TOUR’s entry into the global golf travel industry and underpins its commitment to fan engagement and growing the game of golf. Founded in 1998, Golfbreaks’ relentless focus on choice, service, value, and loyalty, has enabled the company to become a market leader in golf travel. Following 21 consecutive years of revenue growth, Golfbreaks now looks to accelerate the expansion of its North American business and will do so under the ‘Golfbreaks by PGA TOUR’ brand. “We opened our U.S. office in 2016 to provide the 30 million+ golfers with a one-stop travel service offering high quality, good value golf vacations,” said Andrew Stanley, Golfbreaks Chief Executive Officer. “Having achieved three years of doubledigit growth, the time was right for us to find a strategic partner who was fully committed to help us scale this business. Combining the PGA TOUR’s credibility, reach and

assets, with Golfbreaks’ market knowledge, existing business and intellectual property, creates a scalable platform to grow the business not just in North America, but across all geographies.” Specifically, the PGA TOUR will contribute its brand and select marketing assets to raise the profile and visibility of Golfbreaks to the PGA TOUR’s global fan base. In addition, Golfbreaks will build tournament experience packages at high-profile events like THE PLAYERS and the FedExCup Playoffs, as well as unique “stay and play” vacations at prominent TPC properties such as TPC Sawgrass and TPC Las Vegas. “Booking a golf vacation in the States can be an arduous process,” said Lance Stover, PGA TOUR Senior Vice President, New Ventures. “In partnership with Golfbreaks, we can help showcase a better solution. Highly skilled agents that simplify the discovery and planning process at a better value is an incredible proposition. We have been highly impressed with the way in which the Golfbreaks Team has successfully built its business and firmly believe that by adding our marketing reach and unique assets, we can help redefine what golf travel means to our fans.” Golfbreaks will continue to be managed and operated by the existing and longstanding Golfbreaks leadership team. As a minority shareholder in the company, the PGA TOUR will also serve on the Board of the parent company, Golfbreaks Limited.

Jack Heal’s New Book ‘Lefties: A Short History of Left-Handed Golfers’ Recent release ‘Lefties: A Short History of Left-Handed Golfers’ from Covenant Books author Jack Heal is a comprehensive account on the influence of left-handed golfers in sending golf to a whole new level. Jack Heal, who has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Michigan and a Juris Doctorate from the Detroit College of Law (now the Michigan State College of Law), and practiced law in the Detroit area for many years, has completed his new book “Lefties: A Short History of Left-Handed Golfers”. Jack, who has been a left-handed golfer since shortly before his fifth birthday in August 1944 writes, “This book is about left-handed golfers. Most play golf for a living. However, there are a few names not necessarily associated with golf. For example, did you know Babe Ruth was a left-handed golfer and a darn good one at that? Former president Barack Obama is a left-handed

www.golfvacationsmag.com

golfer. Mardy Fish, once ranked number nine in the tennis tour, is a left-handed golfer. There are a few names you may not readily recognize today, but some could become household golf names in the future.” Published by Covenant Books of Murrells Inlet, South Carolina, Jack Heal’s new book reveals, once and for all, that players who swing a golf club from the left side can succeed in the game. Some are naturally right-handed (including the writer) but swing sports implements (golf clubs, baseball bats, hockey sticks, cricket bats) from the left side. Phil Mickelson, the greatest left-handed golfer ever, does everything right-handed except swing a golf club. Readers can purchase “Lefties: A Short History of Left-Handed Golfers” at bookstores everywhere or online at the Apple iTunes stFor additional information or media inquiries, contact Covenant Books at 843-507-8373.

Just Wynn Baby – Golf is Back on the Vegas Strip By Tim Cotroneo

O

n October 11, 2019, Wynn Resort began offering something special for every Las Vegas-bound air passenger lucky enough to choose a window seat. For the first time since 2000, passengers observing the Vegas skyline witnessed an 18-hole championship golf course on The Strip…. all compliments of Wynn. After a mega-investment and a meticulous two-year construction process, it seems fitting that the 6,700-yard Wynn Golf Club opened in grand style on a sunny, 72-degree day. With perfect conditions and excitement in the air, you could almost feel Frank, Dino, and Sammy smiling up in heaven. Las Vegas’ most high-end hotel left nothing to chance as it set the stage for its 129-acre golf main event. Wynn chose golf architect Tom Fazio and his son Logan to reimagine what a modern-day golf heaven feels like, especially

in a gambling mecca that reinvented the art of one-upmanship. The drum roll leading to the first tee box includes walking inside the Wynn’s glittering array of two spas, 19 restaurants, 50 retail shops, and convention space the size of Texas. Wynn Golf 2.0 Upon checking in with your tee time, a clubhouse attendant leads you through a posh locker room equipped with all the Vegas-style trappings. For those seeking a little side action, this spare-no-expense locker room features four big-screen televisions that are directly tied to Wynn’s Race and Sports Book. Can you say, “I’m all in?” Once you step outside, that’s when the Fazio team’s expertise is on display in all its world-class golf glory. The first tee is a newcomer’s baptism to the sights, sounds, and energy that is Viva Las Vegas. Here is where you’re Continued on page 20

t wasn’t until the third hole that I began to understand the significance of this sunny and crisp October day, which marked the grand reopening of the iconic Wynn Golf Club on the Las Vegas Strip. Veteran PGA Pro David Barnhart had caddied hundreds of rounds for high rollers, celebrities and hackers like me, and he’d played some of the best courses in the world. But as my foursome stood on the tee box of the 515-yard, par 5 third hole, Barnhart could no longer hold in his emotions. “I’ve never been this nervous before on a golf course,” he said. “I’ve been waiting so long for this day. I can’t believe it’s finally here.” Nearly two years after it was shuttered, with an uncertain and potentially dire future, the Wynn Golf Club has reemerged.

And it’s better than ever, with eight brand new holes, 10 revamped holes and a completely different experience. The 6,722-yard, par-70 course, designed by Tom Fazio and his son Logan, is actually about 300 yards shorter than the version that debuted in 2005, also designed by Fazio. But it’s a lot more interesting and entertaining, featuring spectacular views of the Las Vegas Strip skyline on nearly every hole and it finishes with a dramatic 249-yard par-3 finishing hole over a lagoon with a stunning 35-foot-tall waterfall behind an elevated green that slopes toward the water. “We went from being a flat, narrow golf course to being a rolling, elevated, framed setting,” Fazio said. “It’s now a totally different environment.” After sitting untouched for a year, Fazio

Cotroneo reminded that the Wynn Golf Club owns a return address that reads Las Vegas Strip. If you haven’t already heard, return address is literal because you’re playing on what Director of Golf Brian Hawthorne refers to as Wynn Golf 2.0. That’s because the first Wynn Golf Course passed quietly back in 2017. It didn’t take CEO Matt Maddox long to realize that gamblers who golf were choosing another hotel. This realization spurred Maddox to reach out to Hawthorne and inquire if he was interested in returning to the best job he’d ever had. Golf on The Strip – Back Where It Belongs Hawthorne quickly reconnected with many former key employees and shared that Wynn Golf was coming back, this time on The Strip. On the Wynn Golf grand opening day, several caddies were caught beaming while doing their best “I’m baaack,” Arnold Schwarzenegger impression.

Golf insiders are saying that Wynn Golf Course is better than ever. When asked what he drew upon for his Wynn encore, Fazio shared a favorite piece of golf architecture philosophy. “There are no rules in course design, and there are endless possibilities. That flexibility is what makes what I do fun. We had all that and more at Wynn,” Fazio said. On the Vegas hold-em side of the equation, Fazio retained and enhanced 10 of the former golf holes. On eight of the holes, Fazio doubled down and created something new that feels like an outdoor theater in the round. A Rock Star Golf Environment For those seeking a one-of-a-kind golf experience, imagine being surrounded by some of the world’s most famous skyscraper hotels. McKibben and his team took only nine months to transform the Wynn, which originally opened as the Desert Inn Golf Club in 1952. The process involved relocating more than 400,000 cubic yards of earth and 300 trees to create wider landing areas, contours, elevation changes and larger greens. Fazio seemed somewhat surprised that he and his son were given a second chance at shaping a course on such a precious property.

There is however a heavy price to pay for playing a round of golf in the backyard of the Wynn Resort, which is one of the country’s more valuable 129-acre plots of land. The green fees are $550. At least there are a bevy of amenities included in that $550 green fee, complimentary Callaway loaner clubs, full-service locker rooms, warm-up balls at nine hitting bays, a well-stocked golf cart with sports drinks and water and a professional forecaddie, which could easily be a PGA Pro like Barnhart.

“The site is perfect; usually golf courses do not exist in such a perfect, expensive location,” he said.

Cotroneo first green and second tee box, a five-story vertical banner of Rod Stewart stands larger than life. Only in Vegas, baby. Golfers who appreciate the sheer environmental beauty of golf will note that Fazio’s design revs it up a notch when it comes to Wynn’s six-pack of Par 3s. Each Par 3 tee shot challenges players to acknowledge an artistic mix that is equal parts exquisite conditions, picturesque water, abundant sand, and a canopy of Vegas skyline. If camaraderie is your favorite golf intangible, perhaps your caddy will share a story or two on the golfers who came before you. The previous Wynn Golf Course was a favorite for princes, sports celebs, and titans of industry. The new Wynn Golf 2.0 is certain to also intrigue an international golfing clientele curious to experience the first course positioned on The Strip in 20 years. and giving their audience a reason to come back. The drama, visuals, and memories surging from the first 17 holes culminate with a closing hole that is as good as it gets. Fazio changed the 18th from a Par 4 to a Par 3. Today’s 18th hole is a formidable 200-plus yards that features a 100-footwide waterfall framing the green. With water embracing the entire left side and sand on the front left and back right, golfers have a lot to think about. In a city where the headliners leave fans wanting for more, Fazio’s closing number is worthy of a Par 3 standing ovation. As your plane soars back home from McCarran International Airport, you peek outside and notice something fairway green just below the clear blue Vegas sky. Today you’re thankful for at least two things: You’re grateful that Wynn Resort brought golf back to the Las Vegas Strip. You are also humbled by the childlike thrill that comes whenever you choose a window seat. https://www.wynnlasvegas.com/ experiences/golf

game, half of them measure over 200 yards from the back tees. But the 147-yard 5th hole plays downhill and 7th hole is only 157 yards, though water is in play on both holes.

“If you keep somebody from gambling for four and a half hours,” he said. “We might be saving people money.”

The greens are slick, but true and there are sideboards on nearly every hole that redirect wayward approaches onto the putting surface. Though you’re surrounded by towering hotels, convention center construction and a monorail, you don’t feel crowded at the Wynn the way you do at many expensive resort courses where you’re fearful of blasting a tee shot off a townhouse or eavesdropping on someone’s private backyard conversation.

The two-year hiatus, media buzz and pleasant fall temperatures will almost certainly make a Wynn tee time hard to obtain for the first several months. But golfers with a room reservation at Wynn Las Vegas, or the nearby Encore, have a distinct advantage. They can they can book their tee times 90 days out, non-resort guests may reserve times 30 days out. Golfers who might wonder if playing golf in the middle of Las Vegas is distracting, intimidating or confining, needn’t worry. The pristine fairways are fairly generous--I’m a 20-handicap and I didn’t lose a ball from the back tees until my tee shot on No. 18 plopped in the lagoon. The par 3s will test your hybrid www.golfvacationsmag.com

It’s not often you’re able to stay at a luxury hotel, hop on an elevator and stroll down a hallway that opens up to one of the finest resort courses in the United States. So don’t mind the exorbitant greens fee, take advantage of a once-in-alifetime experience, running the table for four hours at the Wynn Golf Club. Golf Vacations • November 2019 23

hen you snowbird toward Phoenix-Scottsdale this fall and winter don’t forget about We-Ko-Pa’s 36hole award-winning complex. And certainly don’t forget about it when a new state-of-the art We-Ko-Pa Casino Resort opens next summer. This casino and resort project has been talked about for 20 years and you can bet the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation is thrilled to make a great resort into an outstanding one. We-Ko-Pa Golf Club might just be the ultimate example of what one golfer likes, another golfer might have a different opinion. Don’t get me wrong both 18s at the complex have scored awards from every publication that gives awards, but which one is best – Cholla or Saguaro – is typically split 50 percent. 24 Golf Vacations • November 2019

“One golfer will tell me he likes Cholla best and the next golfer will tell me he likes Saguaro better,” said Matt Barr, general manager. The winner is the travel golfer and the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, which was created on September 15, 1903. The “white” man probably thought back then this 40-square mile reservation was without value -- a desert, rocky landscape. But when the Cholla opened on December 14, 2001, the last laugh was heard by the Yavapais, a Native American nation of about 950. Needless to say, the excellence of the golf courses, financed by the Fort McDowell Casino, is a source of great pride among tribe members. Today, the white man loves the place, saying golf architect Scott Miller has created a target-golf course that is mentioned in the same conversations with upscale daily-fee desert www.golfvacationsmag.com

award-winners such as Troon North, The Boulders, Grayhawk, Legend Trail, Talking Stick, Ak-Chin Southern Dunes, and the Golf Club at Dove Mountain and Quintero Golf Club. But just to solidify its ranking as one of the best golf complexes in Arizona Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore added the Saguaro 18 in 2006. The We-Ko-Pa experience “Travel golfers love that there are no houses to be seen,” said Barr. “It can be tranquil and serene. And golfers enjoy that the courses are designed by two different architect firms. You can play all day long and get so much variety.” The scenery is as good as it gets in Arizona. Views include the Verde River, McDowell Mountains, Red Mountain, Superstitions, Matazal Mountains and Four Peaks (We-Ko-Pa in Yavapai) rises 7,000 feet in elevation. www.golfvacationsmag.com

“Lots of people think we are way out in the middle of nowhere,” Barr said. But the 25 mile drive from Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport is worth the ride just for the rolling scenery of the Sonoran Desert. Awards have blanketed both courses but Saguaro was recently named Golfweek’s Best State-by-State’s No. 1 in Arizona for the 11th time in 12 years. We-Ko-Pa Saguaro Saguaro has more traditional features than Cholla. “Tees are closer to greens, the fairways are wider and the rough creeps into the desert,” said Barr. “Also the bunker fringes have more ragged edges.” “This piece of land has some very interesting natural movement to it,” said Ben Crenshaw of the Saguaro course. “I think this golf course is unique for the desert. WE-KO-PA GOLF CLUB play different shots and find solutions to new challenges when playing this course.” This routing allowed for a blend of short and long par four holes with less than 25,000 cubic yards of material moved. That created 68 acres of turf that plays 6,996 yards at par 71 from the back tees. The prevailing southwest wind creates many crosswind situations. Coore and Crenshaw have always debated the use of alternate fairway holes, but Coore thought about Red Lawrence’s 1962 Desert Forest design, 30 miles north in Carefree, when they laid out No. 14, which has an alternate smaller fairway right. This 538-yard par 5 allows you to hit to a left fairway, which is safer, but if you negotiate the smaller right fairway it gives you a shorter approach with a better angle. The course is all about attack angles. We-Ko-Pa Cholla Scottsdale-based Scott Miller, a protégé of Jack Nicklaus for more than a decade, created a challenging 7,225 yards, par 72, from the back tees that transitions smoothly into larger target landing areas from all tees. Small amounts of dirt were moved in construction meaning the holes blend with the natural landscape. Miller was an artist by situating greens into natural draws or arroyos and box canyons, then framing them with sculpted bunkers, waste areas, centuries-old saguaros and rock outcroppings. And talk about an economy of bunkers -there’s only 75 of them and holes 1, 2, 8 and 13 don’t have any greenside traps. Approach shots on 13 through 18 have zero bunkers in front creating an opening to run your Pro V1 up with a pitch or the Texas wedge. No. 8, a 587-yard par-5 is downhill dogleg that runs along a box canyon. In front of the green the landing area seems tiny with an arroyo waste area left and a pint-sized piece of fairway sloping down to the putting surface. If you lay up back from this section of the fairway you are on a severe down slope. This could be the most photographed hole. Saguaro’s Bunker Renovation We-Ko-Pa’s Saguaro Course had extensive www.golfvacationsmag.com

bunker renovation beginning in July of 2018. The project enhanced drainage and playability of all bunkers. “Over the past 12 years, our flagship course has begun to show some signs of natural aging just like any golf course or outdoor playing field,” said Barr. “In order to maintain a high level of playability and consistency for the next decade, we decided to take a preemptive measure to ensure our guests experience the best possible playing conditions at our club, and an experience that matches Saguaro’s position as Arizona’s best public golf course.” The three-step renovation process included removing all existing sand from the current bunkers to inspect the drain lines for damage. Once necessary repairs have been made to the drain lines and they are restored to original specifications, the maintenance teams will install new sand – a mixture of Augusta White and Arizona Gold – and inspect for consistency. The iconic Coore Crenshaw Inc. bunker design will remain intact and untouched. “The renovated drainage system and new sand will make for a much better playing experience, especially out of greenside bunkers,” said Ryan Kreizenbeck, director of maintenance at We-Ko-Pa Golf Club. “You just have to know every 10 years or so, you’re going to have to do something with the bunkers to clean them up and make sure they’re draining properly again.” Stay and Play We-Ko-Pa Resort & Conference Center features 246 contemporary guestrooms and suites designed with Native American traditions. Amenities include Southwestern cuisine at Ahnala Restaurant, spa treatments and salon services at the Amethyst Spa and a huge heated outdoor pool with two whirlpools.
