2020 US Open Reflections

T

he announcing crew at the 2020 US Open seemed obsessed with “The Bombers” - players who drove the ball extreme distances with little regard for the occasional tee shot into the rough. TV has selected Bryson DeChambeau as their representative given his length and victory. I thought I’d wait a bit to see what the industry sources had to say. I can’t say it’s unanimous because I haven’t seen everything, but the theme is: Get Ready for The Golfer of Tomorrow: • 350 Yard Carry • Clubhead speed which tears through the rough allowing the ball to launch high and carry to the green. • The ‘new’ instructor who teaches distance be it ground up or whatever new method is used.

8 Golf Vacations • November 2020

• Gym sessions producing athletes who look more like football players. • And last, a whole new shelf of steroids for golf. At the same time the USGA and its organizational allies are planning meetings focusing not if the ball will be rolled back, but when. Clearly, influenced by visual evidence from a great Winged Foot course in our national championship. Let’s look deeper! A hypothetical, go back a few months. You are on the planning committee for the US Open to be held at Winged Foot, one of America’s great venues. This year because of Covid there will be no galleries, something never experienced at a USGA major golf event. I repeat, your committee is planning for The US Open. That implies “Open Rough” a term that is significant on its own. You don’t play from Open Rough, you escape... maybe.

www.golfvacationsmag.com

The nature of Open Rough is a thick chunky base with long tendrils reaching skyward. These make it very difficult to find your ball in the best of circumstances and when attempting to advance these tendrils wrap themselves around your hosel closing the face, sending your ball deeper into hostile territory. That’s if you can even find it, Open rough has “disappeared” many balls over the years and done so within full view of gallery spectators aiding course marshals. The rule of thumb for competitors has always been to find the most reasonable patch of fairway and get out. But this is the year of Covid. No galleries. Marshals, but relatively few because of no galleries. Now, considering that normal US Open rough will produce many searches where marshals are important, the shortage of them will cause endless searches which don’t make for great TV viewing. So, a decision is made, cut the rough down so shots can be found. Still in the rough but sitting on the chunky base and very often can be played. A tough call for the purist but an objective economic evaluation leaves no choice.

The announcers regale us with astonishing distances and swing speeds that allow escape from Open Rough that used to be impossible. The golf publications jump on this theme and predict that the golfer of tomorrow will be “DeChambeau like” not sweet swingers but physical hulks rewriting the book on distance strongly influenced by no fear of the rough. My point here is those publications and instructors, jumping on the “longer and slightly crooked is better” bandwagon, have added 2+2 and gotten 5 when using the 2020 US Open as a premise. DeChambeau is a great and powerful player, however, I don’t think he’s known for his putting. He should have been, it was terrific, probably influenced his score! He is our National Champion, an unsurpassable honor. But his style has me betting that the USGA is working on dates to discuss changing the golf ball, as in making it shorter. I’m 100% against such a move. Golf is a game where amateurs can go to the same course play the same clubs and given a huge difference in skill achieve some measure of affiliation with the pros. A birdie is a birdie, not a long or short ball birdie. From a business perspective, the overwhelming majority of those golfers financially supporting golf are 50+. And we want them to hit it shorter? Well Mr. Adams what Would you do? I know zero about golf ball manufacturing but keeping the distance the same I’d change the dimples to increase curvature Just enough so it doesn’t affect slower swings that much but very high swing speeds so it’s in the player’s head More thoughts. As an admitted TV viewer, get rid of those yardage books. Fine for practice rounds but when the bell rings it should be player and caddie, not an “on green” conference. What’s next, a staff meeting? I’ll conclude with a Note to the PGA Tour and, importantly, an admonition. To the PGA Tour: The minute a tee goes into the ground on #1 every player is on the clock. Stroke penalties, not fines, will get their attention. To the rest of the golfing world: Let’s not blindly pursue the “new golfer” concept without considerably deeper study. THE UNLIMITED STAY & PLAY GOLF PACKAGE

AT FURNACE CREEK GOLF COURSE AT THE OASIS IN DEATH VALLEY

D

EATH VALLEY, CA – If a coyote runs out and steals a golf ball, golfers get a free drop. That’s one of the “house rules” at the unique Furnace Creek Golf Course at Death Valley, the lowest elevation USGA golf course (-214 below sea level) in the world. It’s also considered one of the country’s most “collectable” golf courses. Now, golfers can play unlimited golf on this famous course with the Unlimited Stay & Play Golf Package. Along with the golf course, The Oasis at Death Valley, comprised of the historic, AAA Four Diamond Inn at Death Valley and the family-oriented Ranch at Death Valley, is one of the country’s best kept secrets. A true oasis, just two hours from Las Vegas and four hours from Los Angeles, the temperatures in the winter range from 65 to 92 degrees (average temperature in February is 72 degrees and the natural spring-fed pools are an inviting 84.5 degrees all year round).

Tee up oasisatdeathvalley.com and use the promo code UNLIMITED for reservations. The Stay & Play package includes (with some restrictions): • Overnight accommodations at either The Inn at Death Valley or The Ranch at Death Valley • Pay for the first round of golf and then enjoy unlimited golf for the duration of your stay ($147 total for two, or $73.50 per person) • Cart rental • Club storage • Use of sports courts and spring-fed swimming pools The Course Furnace Creek Golf Course at Death Valley is an 18-hole course located in a true American oasis within the three million acres that is Death Valley National Park. It’s best to be humble and not fooled by the wide-open fairways and the length of the course, which plays to a par of 70 and is only 6,215 yards from the back tees. From there, the course has a USGA rating of 74.7 with a slope of 128. Begun in 1927, the legendary course recently underwent a massive renovation primarily focused on water conservation and the transition of 15 acres of maintained turf to desert with low-water-use native plantings which was overseen by Fred Dickman, Director of Golf Course Maintenance and Hotel Grounds for the legendary Broadmoor Resort in Colorado Springs. Important Note: Found on all maps, The Devil’s Golf Course in Death Valley, located a few miles from Furnace Creek is not an actual golf course, but an expansive salt field created by evaporated bodies of water. The Oasis at Death Valley Just off of a $100-million renaissance, The Oasis at Death Valley offers guests a naturally social-distanced environment where it’s sunny, has almost no rain, no bugs, you can see the Milky Way with the naked eye, relax at one of the spring-fed pools and enjoy outdoor activities such as tennis, hiking, cycling, horseback riding, jeep tours, and more. Enjoy the Inn at Death Valley with 66 completely renovated rooms and 22 new private casitas (outfitted with a personal golf cart) or the family-friendly Ranch at Death Valley, where all guest rooms open directly to the outdoors and the spacious lawns and abundant open green space create an ideal environment to create your own adventure.

The Cradle of American Golf Continues to Evolve and Amaze by Shane Sharp

nehurst Resort S

pring is golf’s annual coming out party in the Carolinas. But the fall is the storied game’s second season in both the Old North and Palmetto States. High temps drop into the 60s, leaves reach their foliage peak, and abundant sunshine paints Carolinas blue skies atop picturesque November days. In short, it’s the ideal time for golfers to visit, or revisit, Pinehurst Resort. For most golfers, the “Cradle of American Golf,” as it’s known, needs no introduction. The timeless Sandhills golf destination founded in 1895 by James Walker Tufts hosted three U.S. Opens on its famed No. 2 course in the span of 15 years: 1999, 2005 and 2014. And five more are on the way via a new agreement with the USGA designating the resort an “anchor site” and establishing a second home in the Village of Pinehurst. But there’s more to Pinehurst than Donald Ross’s storied No. 2. Home of nine, 18-hole golf courses, The Cradle short course, three hotels and several restaurants and pubs, the resort sets up perfectly for a multi-day golf buddies trip for the ages. A Golf Renaissance Begins Led by owner Robert Dedman Jr. and President Tom Pashley, Pinehurst Resort has boldly reinvented itself over the past decade while staying steadfastly committed to its traditions. www.golfvacationsmag.com

Golf Vacations • November 2020 21

The metamorphosis began with the restoration of Donald Ross’s No. 2 course by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw in 2011 culminating with the 2014 men’s and women’s U.S. Opens. That historic hosting was soon followed by the acquisition of nearby National Golf Club and its Jack Nicklaus Signature Course, which was rebranded as Pinehurst No. 9. It was the period between the summer of 2017 and fall of 2018, however, that forever changed the resort’s dynamic. Gil Hanse, architect of the Olympic Golf Course in Rio di Janeiro, was tapped to design a nine-hole short course, The aforementioned Cradle, on the land between the clubhouse and Beulah Hills Rd. The Cradle exudes fun: music fills the air from hidden speakers, the retro-wooden trailer “Pinecone” serves up cold beverages, and golfers often walk the 789-yard course in “group-somes” of six or more. Nearby Thistle Dhu, the 18-hole putting course that opened in 2012, was expanded from 15,000 to 75,000-square-feet. Tee markers double as drink holders and side bets abound as golfers negotiate the topsy-turvy terrain. Together, The Cradle and Thistle Dhu form Pinehurst’s fountain of youth. An oft-overlooked enhancement during this span was the subtle restoration of the No. 3 course. Several holes on the short-but-sporty layout were refurbished to their original Ross design aesthetic (and two brand new par 3s were added). Locals call it a “mini No. 2” because of its repellant Ross

22 Golf Vacations • November 2020

greens and are quick to recommend golfers play it before testing their mettle on Ross’s full-scale masterpiece. Weighing in at just 5,155 yards from the back tees and a par of 68, No. 3 has humbled many a golfer with its demanding shot values. The Arrival of the New No. 4 For most golf resorts, this would have been enough. But ownership didn’t stop there. Hanse and his team completely “reimagined” the design and routing of the No. 4 course in 2018. Recast by Tom Fazio in 1999 as a lush, Augusta Nationallike experience, No. 4 had gradually lost the native Sandhills aesthetic endemic to Golden Age courses in the area. Hanse reshaped the topography, restored elevation changes and adjusted sightlines to create a stunning test of golf. The result was a companion course to No. 2 that quickly emerged as a player favorite and darling among golf’s cognoscenti. Both No. 4 and No. 2 hosted the USGA’s prestigious U.S. Amateur in 2019, cementing their dynamic duo status. And in 2020, the two courses welcomed many of the nation’s best Amateur players in hosting the venerable North & South Championships. Something Special Brewing The Pinehurst Brewing Company opened its doors in the fall of 2018 in the former steam plant building that once supplied power to the area.

A five-minute walk from the Village, the “PBC’s” brick façade and restored smokestack cut a compelling contrast with the resort’s traditional New England-style architecture. Inside, original pipes and valves were re-purposed as legs beneath tables and light fixtures above booths. A massive, indoor-outdoor bar has emerged as the Village’s hottest gathering spot, and the perfect perch from which to sample the PBC’s selection of handcrafted lagers and ales. And then there’s the barbeque, which isn’t limited to Carolina pulled pork. Succulent baby back ribs, juicy Texas-style brisket and an array of smoked sausages grace the menu and keep golfers and non-golfers alike well fed.

down into dimly lit main dining room that encourages patrons to relax and linger. The Holly is situated in the heart of the Village and is perfect for guests who want to meander its streets before or après a hearty supper. The 42-room Manor Inn, originally opened in 1923, was completely remodeled in 2019. Geared toward golf groups, it features two private hospitality suites with room for 20 that can be reserved for the entire length of stay. Located on its first floor, the new North & South Bar serves a curated selection of whiskies, cocktails and craft beers from the PBC.

Accommodations Aplenty Pinehurst Resort’s colorful history and exciting future converge at its three AAA Four-Diamond hotels, offering 480 rooms and an assortment of amenities.

Golf Packages For years, it’s been a golf staple at Pinehurst Resort. Simple, straightforward and easy to book, the Donald Ross Golf Package features two nights’ accommodations, three rounds of golf and breakfast and dinner, daily. The resort’s vacation planners are a great resource for selecting the courses and lodging that best suits your group. Just call (855) 235-8507 or click here to begin your reservation.

On the list of National Register of Historic Places, The Carolina Hotel is often referred to as the “Queen of the South” or the “White House of Golf.” The grandest and most recognizable hotel at the resort, The Carolina has a regal estate feel, lined with elegant pillars and sweeping verandas.

Getting There Pinehurst Resort is approximately 70 minutes from RaleighDurham International Airport, and Charlotte Douglas International is two hours west. Between the two, they offer direct flights from most major cities.

The resort’s first inn, The Holly, is as cozy as a Carolina night, featuring dark wood panels and quiet nooks. It houses the AAA Four-Diamond 1895 Grille, accessed by a set of stairs

HILTON HEAD, SOUTH CAROLINA

S

ea Pines Country Club has approved a two-phase enhancement plan for its Arnold Palmer, Clyde Johnston golf course including a greatly expanded practice facility, new designated short-game area and complete re-grassing of all tees, greens and fairways. Golf course architect Phil Smith, who recently completed a full masterplan for the 6,383-yard layout, is leading the project alongside Sea Pines Country Club General Manager/Chief Operating Officer Robbie Ames and Golf Course Superintendent Tom Metzger. Jacksonville, Florida-based MacCurrach Golf will oversee shaping and construction. Work on Phase I, comprising the practice facility, shortgame area and re-grassing, will start May 1, 2021 and is scheduled for completion by Oct. 31, 2021. Phase II, slated for development and construction between 2028 and 2030, entails a full-scale renovation of the golf course coinciding with the installation of a new irrigation system. “This is a significant period in the club’s history that will help create one of the best golf playing surfaces in the region and state-of-the-art practice facilities allowing our members to focus on game improvement.” says Ames. “The Phase II renovation will create a world-class golf experience for the next generation of Sea Pines Country Club members.” The practice facility expansion will lengthen the range floor by 50 yards, expand the depth and width of the tee area for additional hitting stations and double the size of the practice putting green. New target greens will be placed at various angles with yardage intervals ranging from 70 to 250 yards. The designated short-game area will feature a multi-tiered chipping green and two bunkers for honing sand shots. Fairways and tees will be fully re-sprigged with Celebration Bermuda grass, the PGA Tour-caliber turf used at neighboring Sea Pines Resort on RBC Heritage host course Harbour Town Golf Links. Greens will be sprigged with TifEagle Bermuda grass and putting surfaces restored to their original size, allowing for additional pin placements and improved approach shot receptivity. “The leadership team at Sea Pines Country Club is fully committed to providing its members a world-class golf experience,” says Smith. “The 2021 upgrades will enhance the course agronomically while further elevating shot values and strategy. I’m honored to work with this amazing club to help them create a golf course and practice facility that will be maintained at the highest level.”

SWEETSTUFF Ecco S-Three Shoe

E

cco has stretched the boundaries of golf shoe design once again with its new S-Three hybrid model that features an innovative midsole technology that provides added support and comfort during the swing and while walking. Creating the proper balance between cushioning softness and support is not an easy task for any shoe manufacturer, but the crew at Ecco found the secret with its Zonal Fluidform™ technology by building a molded midsole with three distinct zones of softness for comfort while maintaining stability in the proper section of the sole. As a hybrid shoe this is a great choice to be worn on or off course, but the 100 traction bars and 800 traction angles provide incredible gripping power that feels like a cleated shoe. This wellmade shoe keeps you firmly planted to the turf. This Ecco Dynamic Traction System™ outsole gives great support for the Nappa leather uppers that are processed in Ecco’s tanneries and include Gore-Tex technology that is guaranteed 100% waterproof. A double layer of neoprene in the collar and heel provides increased padding for additional wearing comfort throughout the swing, while the Fluidform Direct Comfort Technology creates an integral, flexible and durable bond without the compromises common with conventionally stitched and/or glued assemblies. This one-piece technology that is created without glue or stitching helps promote flexibility, durability and a lightweight feel. “This breakthrough midsole technology gives the S-THREE some of the best performance features on the market, without sacrificing comfort or style,” noted Jesper Thuen, General Manager, Ecco Golf USA. “It is just the latest in a long line of innovations that have made Ecco Golf one of the most trusted brands in golf footwear.” The unique feature of this shoe is the Zonal Fluidform Technology that has been applied to the polyurethane midsole and the three distinct zones. Starting at the heel, zone one is engineered for medium softness and comfort; zone two is designed for stability and lateral support in the midsole and is more rigid, while zone three has the highest level of softness in the toe area for walking comfort. Due to the advanced multi-section injection process, the midsole of every pair of S-Three shoes will have unique color transitions between the different sections, giving each pair of shoes a distinctive look. Ecco, which was founded in Denmark in 1963, is a familyowned business and built its reputation by using quality leathers and designing for a great fit. Their products are sold in 88 countries around the world at more than 14,000 sales locations. For more information, visit the Ecco website at: www.eccousa.com

Pro Compression Socks

T

aking care of one’s feet during a round of golf can be one of the most important things that a player does to play better and make the experience more enjoyable. Compression socks have become one of the most popular methods to make the journey around a golf course more comfortable, and a USA-based company called Pro Compression has introduced a wide-assortment of technically advanced socks into the golf arena. The company has developed a graduated compression design that improves circulation, helps prevent leg fatigue and is made of a medical-grade fabric that provides firm pressure throughout the sock without sagging. These light and meticulously crafted socks are easier on and off than many brands, yet provide a cool, comfortable fit in any shoe—on or off the course. They help combat muscle soreness and fatigue in the feet and legs and come in a wide assortment of styles and fashionable colors. The Pro Compression socks are made using a proprietary blend of nylon and poly materials--and the true graduated compression strength decreases as the distance to the heart decreases, making these one of the most comfortable around. In a compression sock, for example, you will find less compression at the top of the sock than at the toe. In a pair of compression tights, there will be less compression around the waist than around the ankles. This forces the blood to move upward where there is more space. So, while gravity is pulling blood down, compression is

pushing blood up. This perfect pairing is where the magic of compression happens. By applying the right pressure in the right places, compression socks help increase blood flow. When you increase the blood flow, broken down soft tissue can repair itself more quickly. Put simply, compression helps your body move through its natural recovery process faster, so you feel better sooner. In addition to the moister-wicking fabric and advance toe cushioning, the Pro Compression socks come in a wide assortment of creative styles, and cuttingedge colors. From ankle socks to over the calf and mid-calf socks—even knee high-Pro Compression has many styles for both men and women. The company also makes products for not only golfers, but runners, nurses, travelers, endurance racers and others. ver since CBD products began to hit the marketplace in 2019, the number of products aimed at the golf community and the millions of recreational athletes that enjoy the game has expanded wildly. While most manufacturers have a product or two that they sell, Asheville Botanicals in Asheville, North Carolina, have developed the Anim line of full spectrum hemp products that include a number of specialized CBD tinctures, gels and salves to handle a variety of uses and situations. The company appears to have taken a detailed scientific approach to its production and has formulated CBD blends that lend themselves to specific situations, such as before and after a round of golf—even a special blend to help relax

and promote a good night’s sleep. Organically grown and processed in clean rooms under FDA standards and rigorously tested, Asheville Botanicals has taken great care to assure the quality and efficacy of their products—with a new target of the golfing public. Two of the tincture drops are even named with golf terms--the Anim Swing for post-round relief is designed to counter the effects of repetitive motion—like the golf swing. The Anim Fairway CBD is formulated to be taken before a round to help promote calmness and relaxation— and takes the edge off. The Anim Sports Relief Gel is also beneficial as a pre-round application to rub into your back or legs to help with soreness and inflammation in a targeted area. These products are noticeably effective—especially in reducing the recovery time after a round or even a good workout--and eliminating much of the soreness. In addition to these golf-specific products—several other mixtures in the Anim CBD line can also offer everything from pain relief to helping with rest. The Dream CBD mixture helps promote sleep, while the Balance tincture nurtures mental and emotional steadiness. The Relief formula is for general pain and inflammation while the Restore formula is for chronic and severe pain. They even have a specially crafted CBD for seniors to help with stress and pain mitigation—it is called Tension. In addition to these, Asheville Botanicals has many other products in the wellness category, including a new moisturizing hand sanitizer imbued with Aloe Vera gel and Vitamin E. SLO Brew, the San Luis Obispo brewery that has been marketing the craft beers and has added a sweet Mango and Tropical P.O.G. (passion fruit, orange guava) to the already popular Blood Orange that was first introduced in 2017. These unique California Hefeweizen are infused with real fresh fruit and are available at craft beer outlets and major retailers across the country—a great addition to the cart cooler or just enjoying after the round. The crew at SLO set off on a mission to can sunshine by brewing the ultimate infused wheat beer for an endless summer. Most so-called “fruit beers” (and hard seltzers) are made with extracts and artificial flavorings, but Cali-Squeeze breaks the mold by layering real fruit puree on a soft Hefeweizen base. Its natural, vibrant color and bursts of refreshing flavor will surprise and delight non-beer drinkers and connoisseurs alike. The classic Blood Orange Cali-Squeeze offers a nice sweet fruity taste—not too tart—and is very refreshing. The Mango Cali-Squeeze offers big fruit flavor with a tropical tang that is perfect for the 19th hole. The Tropical P.O.G. reminds one of the islands, and its fruity taste goes down equally as well. SLO Brew has a 30+ year history as a California brewpub and is the longeststanding brewery in the central coast region, winning numerous awards, including Brew Pub of the Year at the Great American Beer Festival.
