TGA Premier Golf – Well Positioned During This Golfing Boom

National after school golf and camp programs return to schools and marches toward one million golfers

T

GA Premier Sports (TGA), the go-to brand for introducing children to sports and the nation’s most prolific provider of in-school- and community-based golf enrichment and camp programs, returns to school campuses and continues to be directly in the middle of this current economic golf boom. TGA (Teach, Grow, Achieve) is the first and still only youth sports franchise model dedicated to the sport of golf. Each TGA chapter and owner is vested in their communities to grow the sport. Programs can be found in more than 77 markets across 28 states. Its continued growth has impacted over 825,000 youth and has made golf available to 1.75 million families. TGA is on pace to register the program’s ONE-MILLIONTH student in 2022. TGA is introducing thousands of kids (ages 5-12) to the sport on school campuses, community centers and golf courses. With 70 percent of its participants and their families being new to the sport, TGA successfully funnels 40 percent of its total participants to golf facilities and national golf programs. Classes are also being utilized anywhere regardless of weather, including gymnasiums, hallways, cafeterias, fields, and blacktops giving the program the ability to run year-round. Below are a couple examples of what TGA programs are doing nationwide. Motor City TGA Becomes a Driving Force for the Future of Women’s Golf Dave Robinson, a former sports editor and deputy managing editor with the Detroit Free Press, is the director of TGA of Southeast Michigan. His local TGA program is doing an impressive job planting the seed for the future and growing the sport in more than 90 schools in the metro Detroit. This includes the growing

8 Golf Vacations • October 2021

popularity of girls’ golf, where last fall, Robinson had 26 former students, who started with TGA, qualify for the girls’ high school state championships. “Over 40 percent of our registrations in our introductory programs have been young girls who want to learn and play the sport, so to see these girls go through the program, progress, and want to continue on into competitive golf is really exciting.” Said Robinson. “Once the students go through the enrichment programs and camps, the next progression for kids who want to take their game to the next level are fall and spring leagues, plus individual tournaments. We provide a low-stress introduction to competitive golf.” One of the largest TGA golf chapters in the country is owned by Kevin Rooney and located in Westchester (NY) and Bergen (NJ) Counties Kevin Rooney has welcomed over 25,000 students to date through his TGA golf programming, which is now back running a full schedule this fall at schools and community centers. “Throughout the last 18 months, with so much uncertainty, the sport of golf has shined. While we couldn’t be in schools, our partnerships with parks and recreation departments, golf courses, indoor facilities, and other non-traditional facilities, TGA Premier Golf has seen its most participation ever,” said Rooney. “The interest in golf is at an all-time high. It provides an opportunity for kids and adults to participate in a sport that is considered “low-risk” and safe. No matter the age or experience level, people can play golf in many different formats today. Kids and adults are having a great time playing and learning the game through TGA clinics, lessons, and camps. And our coaches couldn’t be more enthusiastic about growing the game and passing on their excitement about golf to new people.” For more information about TGA, visit www.playtga.com or follow @TGA_Sports on Twitter.

Casa de Campo Resort & Villas to Host Latin America Amateur Championship LA ROMANA, Dominican Republic – Casa de Campo Resort & Villas – home to the Caribbean’s premier, luxury golf experiences – will host the 2022 Latin America Amateur Championship (LAAC) on its celebrated Pete Dye-designed Teeth of the Dog layout, Jan. 20 – 23. Teeth of the Dog – ranked No. 7 in GOLF Magazine’s “Top 100 Courses You Can Play” – is widely recognized as the No. 1 course in the Caribbean. The dramatic seaside layout showcases Dye’s design hallmarks: railroad ties, vast waste areas, peninsula greens and tees, hand-sculpted putting surfaces and a unique assortment of pot bunkers. The oceanfront holes are astoundingly beautiful, causing Dye to famously quip: “I created 11 holes and God created seven.” Founded by the Masters Tournament, The R&A and the USGA, the LAAC was established to further develop amateur golf in South America, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. The championship moves annually to top courses throughout Latin America and showcases the game’s rising talent in the region. The 2022 tournament will mark the third time the event is contested on Teeth of the Dog having previously hosted the LAAC in 2016 and 2019. The LAAC champion will receive an invitation to the 2022 Masters Tournament at Augusta National Golf Club as well as an exemption into The 150th Open at St. Andrews. The winner also receives full exemptions into The Amateur Championship, U.S. Amateur Championship and any other USGA amateur championship for which he is eligible as well as being exempt into the final stage of qualifying for the 122nd U.S. Open Championship at The Country Club in Brookline, Mass. The runner(s)-up will be exempt into the final stages of qualifying for The 150th Open and the 122nd U.S. Open Championship.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome the region’s top amateurs back to Casa de Campo for the Latin America Amateur Championship,” said Andres Pichardo Rosenberg, president of Casa de Campo. “Teeth of the Dog is a beautiful, challenging championship venue, and our team relishes the opportunity to continue our wonderful partnership with the Masters Tournament, The R&A and the USGA and also showcasing the ever-expanding golf talent in our region.” Participants will have full use of Casa de Campo Golf Learning Center. Residing on 21 acres of “pure grass,” the PGA TOUR-quality facility is highlighted by Trackman and BODITRAK technology. It features two indoor hitting bays for rapid game improvement, yearround training, individual and group golf lessons and schools, expert club-fitting and repair, and multiple practice greens for honing putting and short games as well as a pristine double-sided outdoor range for full shots. In 2002, 27-hole Dye Fore joined Teeth of the Dog as Casa de Campo’s second course. Its three nines – Chavon, Marina and Lakes – are distinct. Chavon features seven holes running atop cliffs dropping 300 feet, Marina meanders down to a harbor ringed by restaurants and shops, and Lakes is artfully crafted across tumultuous terrain. Located in the interior of the property is the resort’s third Dye layout, The Links. The moderately hilly track with tall Bahia grass framing bunkers and undulating greens presents spectacular Caribbean views. Slightly over 7,000 yards from the back tees and playing to a slope of 126, it is considered one of the most-forgiving courses Dye has designed and is ideal for players of all abilities. Dye-designed golf course and 34,000-square-foot updated clubhouse in November following a multi-million-dollar investment in the club by owner STOCK Development. The expansive project entailed the resurfacing of all 18 greens, practice green and chipping area with TifEagle Bermuda; enlarging, leveling and re-grassing tee boxes with Bimini Bermuda; installation of a new subsurface drainage system for rapid expulsion of excess water and new high-performance, artificial turf stations on the driving range for use when the grass tees are closed. The woodwork is painted a cool gray and blends perfectly with new silver and wood-accented pendant lighting and a modern sphere-shaped chandelier. Countertops are adorned with sleek Calacatta stone tops, and display areas for clothing and shoes create a neutral backdrop for displaying latest fashion trends. “Our staff and vendor-partners have been amazing throughout this transformative project and we believe the members and prospective members are really going to love it,” says Olde Cypress General Manager Ken Lanigan. “We’re excited to unveil the changes this fall and feel like we’re well-positioned for future growth and prosperity.” In addition to the golf shop, the clubhouse upstairs interiors have also been enhanced and refined. dyllic Naples, Florida has long been home to a collection of resort, daily fee and private courses designed by many of the game’s greatest golf course architects. With nearly 100 18-hole equivalent golf facilities, close to 1,400 total holes and over 300 days of sunshine a year, this coastal chic enclave on the state’s southwest coast has certainly earned its moniker, “The Golf Capital of the World.” For have-clubs-will-travel golfers, timing is imperative when planning a Naples golf trip. Peak season winter rates at top courses can easily exceed $250, while the summer months bring deep discounts but also a significant golf course maintenance throughout the market. The early fall and late spring shoulder seasons are optimal times to plan a visit, with reasonable rates, fewer crowds and less thunder and lightning And for those who fall in love with the area (they number in the thousands, annually), retire or relocate to Southwest Florida, Collier County and southern Lee County are home to more golf communities, per capital, than any region of the country. “Old Naples” in the city’s center and to the south, as well as coastal stretches along the Gulf of Mexico are home to multi-million-dollar homes and condos. Outlying areas like North Naples, Golden Gate, Bonita Springs and Estero offer plenty of modern touches and more affordable price points. Top Tier Old Corkscrew Golf Club is a Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course

in rapidly growing Estero in southern Lee County. The brawny, 7,393-yard layout sprawls over 275 acres of native, grasses, trees and wetlands marked by vast waste bunkers, pristine fairways and the Golden Bear’s signature green complexes. Unique to the area, Old Corkscrew is a pure golf experience devoid of housing and other distractions. All the better for focusing on the task at hand and managing the course’s eye-popping 151 slope rating from the tips. A few miles to the south, golfers will appreciate the one-two punch of the Gold and Black courses at Tiburon Golf Club. Both tracks were designed by Greg Norman and are home to PGA and LPGA Tour events: the QBE Shootout and CME Group Tour Championship, respectively. The combo sets up perfectly for the relatively long days of late summer and early that can still accommodate 36 holes. The JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort anchors the Naples region’s southern end, and the Hammock Bay Golf and Country Club is the property’s marquee offering. Jim Hardy and former PGA / Champions Tour player turned commentator Peter Jacobsen designed the course, which recently underwent a $4.8 million overhaul that entailed the installation of saltwater tolerant paspalum grass. Double up with a round at sister course, The Rookery at Marco, a Joe Lee original that was touched up by Bob Cupp in 2002 and in 2014 by Hardy and Jacobsen. Both courses are private, but guests of the Marriott have access to select tee times. If the south side of Paradise coast is your target destination, this is the place to be.

Also Playing The Lely Resort Golf and Country Club is quintessential Naples golf, with two resort tracks and one private course: The Mustang and Flamingo Island are open to public play, designed by Lee Trevino and Robert Trent Jones Sr., respectively. Both are typically in good to great condition, and practice junkies will appreciate its two full-service practice facilities, including a 54,000-square-foot driving range with target greens. TPC Treviso Bay was designed by the “mayor of Naples,” Arthur Hills, and former PGA Tour player Hal Sutton. Located across U.S. 41 from the Lely Resort Golf and Country Club, it makes for a convenient and compelling triumvirate with the Mustang and Flamingo courses. The 64,000-square-foot clubhouse is a stunning homage to the halcyon days of golf’s big and bold phase. Extended Stay The Club at Olde Cypress is owned by luxury home builder Stock Development and boasts one of only two P.B. Dye designed courses in the area. The club and surrounding community are centrally located just minutes from beaches, shopping in Old Naples and the Southwest Florida International Airport. Like his famed father and mother, Alice, P.B. has always had a penchant for crafting courses that appeal to both men and women golfers. Olde Cypress is no exception as witnessed by the sheer number of ladies golf groups, tournaments and events. The club is the centerpiece of a highly sought-after, 450-acre gated enclave with resale homes ranging from $550,000 to over $1 million.

Olde Cypress is wrapping up a multi-million-dollar remastering of the golf course this fall. The expansive project entailed the resurfacing of all 18 greens, practice green and chipping area; enlarging, leveling and re-grassing tee boxes; installation of a new subsurface drainage system and new prescription turf on the driving range. Bunkers (there are over 90) are being touched up with new edging and sand. Additionally, the pro shop was reimagined with interior design upgrades ranging from color pallets, woodwork and lighting to countertops, artwork and flooring. In short, Olde Cypress is perfectly positioned for upswell in golf participation and membership demand that’s forecast to continue into the foreseeable future. For golfers who prefer a multi-course club setup, Shadow Wood Country Club in Bonita Springs features 54 holes of championship caliber golf. All three courses have been recently renovated by Rees Jones and provide spectacular playing conditions year-round. Shadow Wood is in the process of building a brand new 3,500-square-foot pro shop which will overlook the expansive practice facilities and feature unique retail opportunities for its members. Game improvement gurus will love the practice facilities, which boast a double-sided range and numerous short game practice areas. The Shadow Wood Golf Academy is located at the back of the range and offers an indoor hitting bay, club fitting studio, and all the latest technological aids to help members improve their game. After a round of golf, members sip cocktails by the firepits on the club’s Sunset Terrace or dine at one of Shadow Wood’s many venues.

Night Life Fifth Avenue is still the place to be when it comes to a night out on the town. Chic shops, decadent restaurants and vibrant bars and clubs line this famous street. Anything, and any cuisine, is possible, here with eateries ranging from traditional American to sushi and Italian. Further north in Bonita Springs, Coconut Point Shopping Center is stuffed with fast-service and sit-down restaurants, as well as the ever-popular Tommy Bahama Restaurant. For a true taste of Naples tradition, pay a visit to The Bay House along the Cocohatchee River. Getting There Collier and Lee Counties share the Southwest Florida International Airport, and the Naples Area benefits from this optimally-sized, easy-to-access transportation hub’s location in south Lee County just minutes from Estero, Bonita Springs, and Naples. For decades, Midwesterners made their way south on I-75 or U.S. 41 to their Southwestern Florida termini in sunny Naples. Making the trek to Naples has become “a thing” again, what with many folks not ready to return to air travel just yet.

Titleist T-Series Irons

T

itleist recently introduced its new generation of the T-Series irons, and the new materials, designs and feel of these clubs make for a distinct new experience for players of all skill levels. With four new T-Series iron models –T100, T100•S, T200 and T300 –Titleist has made some significant advances with their flagship iron lineup in terms of performance and looks. “The new T-Series irons represent another step forward in Titleist iron design and technology,” said Josh Talge, Vice President, Titleist Golf Club Marketing. “With these new irons, across the board, every detail matters. They provide the best precision and performance in their respective iron category with stunning aesthetics and feel. Golfers don’t buy an iron ‘line,’ they want specialization, and that’s what each of these models offer.” The most notable aspect of the new line is in the game improvement model—the T300. While game improvement can have a connotation of a club that looks and feels bulky—and might be designed for a beginning golfer—the 2021 T300 is far from this. The newest edition of the T300 has a new sleek, powerful look—like that of a performance cavity-back iron with a light touch. It is plenty workable for many players but has several benefits for the mid to higher handicap players—or those that want explosive power. “The T300 is the ultimate Titleist game improvement iron,” added Talge. “It is for the golfer who wants high launch, long distance and forgiveness, and wants to see the technology they are using. This model utilizes the Max Impact 2.0 technology which is featured in a sleek, clean package at address for which Titleist irons are known. The design team retained the offset, shape and size, but was able to

add 40 percent more tungsten to this iron, precisely lower the CG and meet the performance needs of this golfer.” Under the hood, this iron features a Cantilever Core Support Structure and a new high resilience polymer core, delivering maximum speed and distance control. The high-density tungsten (D18) weights are utilized in the heel and toe of the 4-7 irons for greater mass efficiency. In addition, Titleist engineers were able to add 40% more tungsten than was in the previous generation T300 through a brazing process applied from aerospace construction usually reserved for Tour-played irons. This contributes to a solid-feeling, advanced design that produces the optimal balance of launch, distance, and forgiveness. The T300 now employs a High COR Variable Face Design that is thinner towards the heel in the long and mid irons to improve performance at what is traditionally one of the least effective strike points. This is an iron that achieves excellent distance even on offcenter hits with high MOI. The new chrome plated finish to these irons gives them a premium, classic look as well. Although Titleist offers custom shafts, the featured stock iron shaft that comes with the T300 is the True Temper AMT Red with Ascending Mass Technology: 3g per club (95-107g) that promotes high launch and high spin. This shaft has a responsive tip and superlight weighting, with progressively lower weighting in the 4-7 irons to help with launch conditions. The stock graphite shaft is the MCA Tensei Red AM2 that also has similar Ascending Mass Technology: 2g per club (54-68g) and promotes high launch and high spin as well. The stock grip is the Golf Pride Tour Velvet 360 with white paint fill and black flat cap and the set makeup is 4-PW. For those that are looking for (and can play) a Tour iron, Titleist has made marked improvements in its other iron offerings. The T100

SWEETSTUFF is a modern Tour iron and the most played iron model on the PGA Tour. The new T100 offers more precise flighting and control, fully forged feelA and a more versatile sole design with less bounce in the heel and more in the toe. A denser version of tungsten weights is used and the 3 through 7 iron-faces were redesigned for more spin for improved shot shaping. The T100 irons are designed with a new Tour-preferred brushed chrome finish. The T100•S is a faster iron with two degrees stronger lofts for added distance. The T200 is called the Tour distance iron by Titleist and has an updated shape with a reduced offset with thinner top line. This is an iron that Tour players use but can be an excellent choice for low to mid handicappers who like a Tour design and feel--but has some game improvement qualities that many golfers can use. or those golfers willing to invest in their physical improvement to enhance their golf swing, therapeutic exercise specialist Carl Horne, Jr. has developed a unique device aimed at developing players’ spinal rotation and flexibility. The TrueTurnPro was designed to be used at home, in a hotel room or on the turf before a round to increase a user’s rotation and

to strengthens the core, which helps develop the muscles to protect and strengthen the back—all collectively improving a player’s speed, power and distance. Horne, who is a former NBA strength and conditioning coach, and therapeutic exercise specialist, is the owner of the Scottsdale, Arizona-based In2One Wellness Studio. He invented and patented the TrueTurnPro device as an easy and cost-effective way to restore and maintain thoracic mobility--and calls it the world’s first thoracic spine isolation and training system. “Swing flaws, back pain and undesired high scores are often connected,” noted Horne. “Whether it’s a common swing flaw such as ‘coming over the top,’ or simply common back pain from, bending, twisting or sitting, high golf scores are the result—and they all have a common denominator: limited hip and back function. If the components of the hip and spine become tight and weak, the mechanics of the spine will eventually become compromised. “Compromised movement is often the root cause for the development of common back pain. Therefore, flawed mechanics can easily be the blame for the most common swing flaws, as swing flaws don’t solely reside in golf theory. The undiscovered origin of these flaws would suggest many are physical by nature.” Horne also noted that the physical separation of shoulders and hips takes place during every full golf swing and creates rotational

SWEETSTUFF power that is vital for one’s best swing. The TrueTurnPro is designed to safely develop this separation of the shoulders and hips by isolating movement of the thoracic spine and improves the spine’s ability to move with less friction and discomfort while increasing overall stability. It helps to restore back function and ultimately offer relief to many people suffering from back pain, he added. The unit itself is easy to use and very packable for a trip—and it certainly works areas of the spine that normally don’t get a lot of attention with the average stretching regimen or traditional workout. The product’s website has many very useful videos and training exercises that are very helpful. “There are a myriad of ways the invention improves one’s golf game overall,” added Horne. “For one, it improves shot accuracy. Accuracy in golf is dependent on the ability to control the angle of the spine throughout the entire golf swing. The TrueTurnPro improves both strength and stability of the spine. Having swing power is only useful and safe with the stability to control the spine. It will develop the power to improve stability and help maintain spine angle. It improves golf shot accuracy.” For more info on the TrueTurnPro: https://trueturnpro.com
