18 Club Selection: Red Sky Golf Club by David R. Holland

Twenty years ago the grand opening at Red Sky Ranch Golf Club was, as ranchers sometimes say, a cool deal. George Jouflas was a 78-year-old cell-phone carrying Colorado pioneer-rancher-realtor, who sat amongst a former president, Gerald Ford, and PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem at the high-end festivities.

22 Alabama Getaway by David Theoret

Birmingham Alabama has a lot of options for golfers, both residents, and visitors. There are nearly 40 public, private and municipal courses within a 20-mile radius of downtown Birmingham, including the infamous Shoal Creek Club, designed by Jack Nicklaus which has hosted a couple of PGA Championships, as well as several courses accessible to the public. Arguably, none are as fine as Ross Bridge and the two championship courses at Oxmoor Valley.

26 5 Must-Visit Autumn Courses by JD Latorre

The majors are over, the days are beginning to shorten and temperatures are starting to cool across the country. The golf season may be winding down, but we’re approaching the peak season for select courses to show their true colors as the leaves start to fall.

Whiskers Supports Breast Cancer Awareness Month

DELRAY BEACH, FL – Whiskers – maker of men’s and women’s premium, golf-specific shoelaces – has established a “Pretty in Pink” philanthropic program during Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

For the fourth consecutive year, the company is donating profits from October sales of its women’s and men’s pink shoelaces to charities engaged in breast cancer research and education. The pink laces are carried in select pro shops and available here.

Whiskers’ pink laces adorn the shoes of scores of LPGA and even PGA Tour players, including major winners, and caddies during tournaments in 2022. They are also popular among amateur golfers and merchandisers for their golf shops, and as first tee prizes and member appreciation gifts.

“There are more than 3.8 million cases of breast cancer in the U.S.,” says Kyle Groth, CEO of Whiskers. “We are grateful to the men and women who purchase pink Whiskers laces, so we can help drive people to early detection measures.”

Whiskers’ altruism is also typified in its “Stand for Ukraine” program from March to August 2022. Proceeds from sales of Whiskers blue and yellow laces – colors of the country’s flag – benefitted Save the Children Ukraine and the Ukraine Crisis Relief Fund, two highly respected non-profits focused on humanitarian relief initiatives in the

embattled country.

Golfers match Whiskers laces’ colors and patterns to their shirts, hats, belts and shoes. Re-lacing golf shoes often takes less than three minutes and Whiskers’ Tour representative is on-site at tournaments to seamlessly assist. Whiskers’ Made-in-the-U.S.A. products are fit for classic shoes like FootJoy and athletic styles from adidas, ECCO, Nike and other brands.

Whiskers boasts more than 70 colors and patterns, including relatively new turquoise, mint green, Vegas gold, guava and lavender, as well as neon laces in blue, green, orange, pink and yellow hues. They join popular solid laces in navy, Carolina blue, pink and red. Navy-light blue, orange-white, berry-black, green-blue and purplepink are top-selling patterns.

In addition to golf laces, Whiskers designs and manufactures laces specifically for dress and casual shoes, sneakers and boots. They coordinate in style and color with trendy footwear and apparel brands, are crafted with ultra-durable poly-nylon tech weave and high-grade aglets, and come in multiple styles, shapes and lengths.

Whiskers is re-imagining a category that’s been long overlooked for decades yet is now an essential part of premium wardrobes. Personalizing and dressing up shoes in fashionable and fun ways mirrors today’s “individualism” frenzy.

Heritage Golf Club Mauritius to open dramatic new La Réserve Golf Links, December 2023, co-designed with Major Champion Louis Oosthuizen

MAURITIUS – Heritage Golf Club, Mauritius, the World Top 100 luxury golf and beach resort, will open La Réserve Golf Links – the Indian Ocean’s first and only contemporary links course – in December 2023.

The spectacular new course, set in the breathtaking lush SouthWest region of Mauritius, features panoramic ocean views from every hole and offers an unparalleled experience of pure golfing drama.

Alongside Le Château Golf Course, consistently voted the Indian Ocean’s Best Golf Course, La Réserve Golf Links will become a new host venue for the DP World Tour’s AfrAsia Bank Mauritius Open from 2023, confirming Heritage Golf Club as one of the world’s most sought-after golf destinations.

La Réserve Golf Links – reserved for club members and residents of Heritage Golf Club’s two luxury beachside resorts and villas – has been co-designed by former Open Champion Louis Oosthuizen, alongside acclaimed course architect Peter Matkovich.

Inspired by the wild open spaces of the great seaside links, the course’s elevated tees, raised greens and spectacular views over Mauritius’ tropical bays and southern shores promises an exhilarating playing experience.

“It’s a challenging course and not for the faint-hearted,” said Louis Oosthuizen, who has created a signature set of back tees to challenge the very best players.

“We’ve worked with the land to create a strategic, undulating course that plays in the traditional links style, with running fairways, pot bunkers and long grasses. The location is breathtakingly

La Réserve Golf Links plays hand-in-hand with nature. Mindful of its location alongside a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to a myriad of birds and wildlife, former sugar cane fields have been sensitively cultivated with native island grasses, creating new, species-rich grasslands, encouraging ecological diversity and valuable carbon sequestration.

All work is being carefully monitored, contributing towards future GEO Certified Development status, the global standard for sustainable course design and construction.

The addition of a second 18-hole tournament course, which will host its debut DP World Tour event in December 2023, makes Heritage Golf Club the Indian Ocean’s only 45-hole golf destination.

Jonathan Menteath, General Manager of Heritage Golf Club, said, “La Réserve Golf Links is a game-changing course for Mauritius and Heritage Golf Club as a select global golf destination.

“This piece of land, with panoramic views over the Indian Ocean, is extraordinary and fulfils our vision to create a world class course for global golfers seeking the purest golf experience in one of the most naturally beautiful places on earth.”

Heritage Golf Club is nestled within the 2,500-hectare Bel Ombre estate and benefits from two five-star luxury beach resorts, including Heritage Le Telfair Golf & Wellness Resort.

Guests also have the option of luxury villa accommodation or, for the ultimate experience, a private suite within Le Château, the 19th century plantation house overlooking the golf course.

La Réserve Golf Links, reserved for members and Heritage Resorts residents only, will open in December 2023.

Kaua‘i, Hawai‘i (September 15, 2022) – Kaua‘i’s Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Hawaii will host the 13th World Deaf Golf Championships October 17 – 21, 2022. 116 deaf or hard of hearing golfers from 14 countries will compete in a 72-hole stroke play tournament over 12 divisions, including Men’s and Women’s, Men’s and Women’s Team, Men’s and Women’s Senior and Senior Team, Men’s Super Senior and Super Senior Team, as well as Junior Boys and Girls.

The World Deaf Golf Championships were established in 1995 and are held every two years. The biennial event will be held for the first time since 2018, after the 2020 World Deaf Golf Championships were cancelled due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Previous World Deaf Golf Championships locations include England, Ireland, South Africa, Australia, Sweden, Japan, Scotland, Denmark and Canada.

2022 World Deaf Golf Championships events will begin at Wailua Golf Course on Monday, October 17th with a practice round (8:30 a.m. shotgun start), followed by four rounds of competition Tuesday through Friday with tee times beginning at 7:30 a.m. each day. Wailua’s classic design has hosted three USGA championships and dates back to the “Golden Age of Golf Course Architecture,” with its original nine holes designed in 1920. The course expanded to 18 holes in 1962 under the direction of Hawaii Golf Hall of Famer Toyo Shirai. In June of 2021, GOLF Magazine ranked Wailua as one of “America’s Best Municipal Courses,” saying, “Wailua exudes a laid-back atmosphere paired with some sneaky bite…”

More than 200 visitors, including golfers, family members and tournament officials will visit Kaua‘i for the Championships. Royal Sonesta Kauai Resort in Lihue will serve as the host

resort, with a traditional Hawaiian Luau and the event’s opening ceremony taking place fronting Kalapaki Beach. Countries represented include: USA, Canada, England, Australia, France, Norway, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Japan, Sweden, India and the Netherlands.

Kaua‘i’s Pono Tokioka is serving as the tournament’s chairperson. A graduate of the United States Golf Association P.J. Boatwright Jr. Internship Program through the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association (HSJGA), Tokioka is a Kaua‘i High School alumnus who played on the University of Hawaii men’s golf team from 2013-2017. He is organizing the tournament along with leadership of the U.S. Deaf Golf Association (USDGA). The HSJGA and Hawai`i State Golf Association (HSGA) staff and officials will volunteer to assist in the delivery of tournament logistics.

“We are honored and excited to host the 2022 World Deaf Golf Championships here at our county’s beloved Wailua Golf Course,” said Kaua‘i Mayor Derek S. K. Kawakami. “And there is no one on Kaua‘i more fitting to chair this tournament than our very own Pono Tokioka, whom we’ve watched grow up on the golf course and excel in not only his talent but also his ability to connect the deaf community throughout our island and state. We extend our mahalo and aloha to Pono and all involved in bringing this highly anticipated tournament to the Garden Island of Kaua‘i and wish all players the best of luck in October.”

Kaua‘i has a rich history of hosting golf events including the US Amateur Public Links, the PGA Grand Slam and various NCAA tournaments. Nicknamed the Garden Island for its lush tropical foliage, waterfalls and ever-present Pacific Ocean scenery, Kaua‘i boasts numerous daily-fee and resort golf courses. The destination is perennially recognized for its beaches, award-winning golf courses, ideal playing weather and stunning natural beauty. CLUB SELECTION

Red Sky Golf Club Fazio, Norman Team Up For Vail Valley’s Elite

WOLCOTT, Colo. -- Twenty years ago the grand opening at Red Sky Ranch Golf Club was, as ranchers sometimes say, a cool deal.

George Jouflas was a 78-year-old cell-phone carrying Colorado pioneer-rancher-realtor, who sat amongst a former president, Gerald Ford, and PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem at the high-end festivities.

No doubt when he was toiling as a young ranch hand he never dreamed this rugged, beautiful land west of Vail would be used for anything other than sheep grazing. That’s what his dad Peter had in mind when he bought more than 11,000 acres in 1926 for $10 an acre.

George passed away in 2012, but today, after 100 years in the area, the Jouflas family still runs the Lazy J Ranch, a haven for outdoorsmen, where 20,000 sheep once roamed next to another million acres of national forest land the family leased for grazing.

Now golfers are enjoying the views along Bellyache Ridge, vistas off to Castle Peak and the Back Bowls of Vail. Golfers

walk the gently sloping fairways and rolling ridges that frame shots through purple sage, junipers, evergreens, aspen groves and sandstone-rock outcroppings. And they are tested by devilish, slick putting surfaces.

Red Sky is private, with a national membership that extends from coast to coast. These members can take advantage of direct flights into Eagle County Regional Airport, a short drive from the club.

The Red Sky Ranch experience

With two courses, Red Sky Ranch was able to offer its membership play on one course, alternating daily, while guests of certain Vail-area hotels can book tee times on the other course.

The guest clubhouse, located at the Fazio Course, features a log exterior and architectural detail designed to present a Rocky Mountain atmosphere. Valet parking greets visiting golfers and there’s a pro shop, and men’s and women’s locker rooms.

On the practice range attendants keep your clubs clean and

18 Golf Vacations • October 2022 www.golfvacationsmag.com

tell when to go to the first tee. After your round the Summer Thyme restaurant, with both indoor and outdoor dining, is ready to serve.

A separate member clubhouse is a showpiece overlooking the Norman No. 18 green. Members are served a complimentary breakfast buffet during golf season at Silver Sage Restaurant and there’s a private lunch, too.

The Fazio Course was the first of two to open. It’s a 7,116yard, par-72 stunner that was joined in 2003 by its neighbor the Norman Course, a par-72 routing that measures 7,480 yards. The courses are separated by a rocky ridge that serves as a corridor for migrating deer and elk.

Both Red Sky Ranch courses rank high. Golf Magazine selected the Fazio course at No. 3 and the Norman course at No. 1 in the state of Colorado.

Fazio Course

VAIL, COLORADO

The Fazio Course, opened only for VIP play in 2002, is a blast for the senses. It’s as scenic as they come and very playable tee-to-green. That’s when the extreme challenge comes -- you are going to three-putt some of these slick surfaces.

Fazio’s design team took particular care to maintain the site’s indigenous vegetation, relocating more than 23,000 native plants into nurseries for re-planting throughout the course. Enjoy the variety of terrain as players traverse open sage-covered hills, dense aspen groves and around a highland lake.

“Red Sky Golf Club not only provides the opportunity to play great golf, but also to encounter dramatic Rocky Mountain landscapes in their pure environmental forms,” Fazio said.

CLUB SELECTION

Norman Course

The Norman Course allows the natural landscape to dictate the flow of play. There’s an elevation change of 400 feet from the third green to No. 14.

Many think the Norman Course has more dramatic elevation changes and tee shots downhill, while the Fazio Course climbs through stands of aspen trees and is less penal and rolling gently.

“For years, my love of the Rockies, along with the natural beauty of the surroundings, has beckoned me to the Vail Valley. Red Sky Golf Club afforded me the chance to create one of the most natural and aesthetically beautiful golf courses in this region,” Norman said.

Actually, until just recently Norman owned The Seven Lakes Ranch east of Meeker and north of Pagosa Springs. He sold the ranch for mucho dinero ($40 million).

More Thoughts

It’s interesting that one can drive the I-70 corridor and see golf course after golf course, left and right, as you rubberneck down the Vail Valley. But if you look up left at Wolcott you

would never dream the land would be that spectacular for two golf courses -- the Vail Valley’s 12th and 13th courses.

Finchem, a frequent Vail visitor for skiing with children and grand kids, was so impressed by the Red Sky Ranch area he called Fazio to quiz him about the golf. At the grand-opening festivities Finchem said it took him about “18 minutes” to decide he wanted a retirement home at Red Sky Ranch.

Where to Stay

When I visit Vail, The Antlers at Vail (www.antlersvail.com) is my pick for lodging. It is located in the redeveloped Lionshead area, 150 yards from the Vail Gondola.

The hotel offers condominiums ranging from studio suites up to four bedrooms with fully equipped kitchens, fireplaces, outdoor balconies with barbecues, and free internet access.

The property includes a heated, year-around, outdoor swimming pool and two hot tubs, a sauna, fitness room, business center and free, heated, indoor parking.

Alabama Getaway

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail Birmingham

Birmingham

Alabama has a lot of options for golfers, both residents, and visitors.

Ross Bridge and Oxmoor Valley are part of the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, the largest golf course construction project ever attempted. The trail was the brainchild of Dr. David Bronner, CEO of the Retirement Systems of Alabama whose “build it and they will come” mentality paid off.

The RTJ Golf Trail consists of 469 holes of championship golf on 26 golf courses at 11 sites across the state of Alabama. Some sites have multiple 18-hole layouts, others offer several 9-hole courses. Some are executive-length courses, some will make the best golfers in the world cringe. Some are affiliated with neighboring hotels, some are stand-alone. But one thing they all have in common is that they were designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr and use the natural topography of the land. Whether you’re playing one of the many championship layouts or a “short course,” all are immaculately maintained!

Over the years I have had the opportunity to play several of the RTJ Trail courses and ultimately my goal is to play them all. Ross Bridge is my favorite and has been for many years. From the back (Black) tees, Ross Bridge plays 8,191 yards and is one of the longest golf courses in the world; thankfully there is more than one set of tees. In fact, there are 5 sets of tees offering several manageable distances: Purple (7,446), Orange (6,783), White (6,200), and Teal (5,312). It was cart

path only the day we played so we opted for White, not that perfect weather would have made any difference!

The first two holes can either make your day or have you looking for the beverage cart early in the round. Ross Bridge starts you off with one of my favorite holes. The Par 5, 1st hole plays 511 yards and is handicapped #3 for men and #1 for women. The large pond that comes into play on your layup and approach shots creates somewhat of a double dogleg and makes you choose between carrying your layup shot over the water or laying up short of it. Either way, you’re looking at an uphill/blind approach shot into an elevated green guarded in front by two large, cavernous bunkers.

After your uphill climb from the first green to the second tee box, you’ll be happy to know that the 2nd hole is significantly downhill and, from the White tees, Number 2 plays a mere 322 yards. It’s a dogleg left with trees and sand at the corner of the dogleg that can be carried with a good drive. Most players opt for something less than a driver off the tee and play their shot slightly right of the left-hand fairway bunker. It’s a safe strategy unless you hit it too far and go through the fairway.

Success off the tee will leave a short pitch into one of Ross Bridge’s smallest greens guarded on the right by sand and left and long by that pond you dealt with on the first hole. Pars or better on both of these holes will have your day off to a great start.

I found The Ridge Course at Oxmoor Valley to be a lot more of a challenge than Ross Bridge, mainly because all of the greens were extremely elevated. The starter told us that if your range finder tells you to hit a 7-iron, it’s probably a good idea to hit a 6! After my approach shot into the first green came up a little short, I too was a believer!

24 Golf Vacations • October 2022 www.golfvacationsmag.com

Oxmoor Valley offers 54 holes of golf with two championship courses (Ridge and Valley) and a Short Course. It’s built on mining land that was once owned by U.S. Steel and the holes are sculpted from the peaks and valleys that make up the Appalachian Mountains. As you play your way around the courses, you’ll encounter over 200 feet of elevation changes, scenic forests, and several creeks that you may or may not know are there.

The Ridge Course features roller coaster-like fairways, lots of tree-lined holes, elevated greens, and over 200 feet of elevation changes. Uneven lies are the norm out here. It’s one

of the most photographed courses on the entire RTJ Trail and boasts some of the most thrilling par 5s in the state. Case in point, the Par 5 3rd hole, which is considered by many to be the course’s signature hole. It’s the second of back-to-back par 5s, and it’s best to put the last hole out of your mind before teeing off! Number 3 plays 506 yards from the White Tees and is handicapped the hardest hole on the outward side.

There’s water between the tee and green but it probably won’t come into play until your second shot. Tee off from an elevated tee box and favor the right side of the fairway. Do the same thing with your layup shot but by all means, keep it in the fairway. That will leave an uphill approach shot into a green with an outcropping of rock. Be warned that the green is not as deep as it looks.

Eighteen is an impressive par 5 and is ranked the hardest hole on the golf course. At 543 yards from the White tees, not many players will reach it in two. If they do, they should probably have been playing from the longer tees! Your aiming point is the chimney on the clubhouse. As is often the case on the Ridge course, there are steep drop-offs from the edge of the fairway. Playing your layup shot right of the 150-yard marker will give the best angle into the green which is protected front and right by bunkers.

The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail offers some incredible Stay & Play packages. The Renaissance Ross Bridge offers golfers the chance to relax in the style and comfort associated with the Renaissance Hotel group. Each room and suite is equipped with elegant furnishings, luxurious bedding, and a private balcony that offers astonishing views of Alabama’s hilly countryside. Whether you’re looking for breakfast, dinner, or something in between, you have several dining venues on the property to choose from including Brock’s, The Clubhouse Restaurant, and JT’s Lounge. Other hotel amenities include a 24-hour fitness center and indoor and outdoor swimming pools. There is also a full-service spa to help you rejuvenate after tackling those monster links.

Fall Foliage Five Must-Visit for the Autumn

Firestone Country Club

Foliage Catalog

Must-Visit Courses Autumn Golf Calendar

The summer golf season has come to an end, but these fantastic fall destinations are the perfect way to make the most of the remaining golf calendar.

The majors are over, the days are beginning to shorten and temperatures are starting to cool across the country. The golf season may be winding down, but we’re approaching the peak season for select courses to show their true colors as the leaves start to fall.

Over the next few weeks, golfers across the country can experience layouts bathed in golden autumn hues as the season falls unto full swing, and some of the nation’s top venues are poised for a picturesque finale to the golf calendar.

Here are a few destinations with notable fall foliage that should be on every golfer’s bucket list this time of year.

Destination Kohler

Autumn golf at Destination Kohler was on full display last October when Whistling Straits hosted the 43rd Ryder Cup. The highlight of the week may have been the United States’ dominating performance over the European team, but the gorgeous scenery on the shore of Lake Michigan lit up televisions across the world, attracting thousands of golfers to make the same trip in 2022. But don’t worry, there’s still time for a round or two in the prime fall weather before the bitter Wisconsin winter takes hold in a few months.

Located one hour north of Milwaukee and two hours north of Chicago, Destination Kohler features four Pete Dyedesigned courses across its Whistling Straits and Blackwolf

Run facilities.

The Straits Course at Whistling Straits, where the Ryder Cup was played, perennially ranks among the finest layouts in the world. The Straits has previously played host to three PGA Championships and a U.S. Senior Open. As the first resort course to host a domestic Ryder Cup in nearly 30 years, golfers of all skill levels can try their best to match Bryson DeChambeau’s 418-yard drive on No. 5, or close out a friendly match with a clutch birdie on No. 18.

Just inland of The Straits course sits The Irish. By masterfully routing the course through large dunes, Dye brought a bit of the Emerald Isle to the Badger State. Named “Blind Man’s Bluff,” the 13th hole features a sunken green obscured by a large dune like the famous “Dell Hole” at Lahinch Golf Club. Both memorable and traditional, The Irish provides an excellent opportunity to experience Old World links golf a little closer to home.

Set in a river basin formed by glacial runoff and a short drive from the charming town of Kohler sits The River and Meadow Valleys courses at Blackwolf Run. The Meadow Valleys flows along the natural features of the surrounding terrain, winding through pastures and ravines. Tipping at 7,404 yards, The River is characterized by small landing areas, strategic bunkering and large undulating greens. It’s a classic risk / reward Dye design that GOLF Magazine has called “the nation’s finest public-access course of modern times.”

Accommodations include the iconic American Club, the only Forbes Five-Star hotel in Wisconsin, as well as the newly renovated Inn on Woodlake, which works exceptionally well for buddies’ trips.

Giants Ridge

Known for mild summer temperatures and snow-covered forests perfect for skiing in the winter, Northern Minnesota’s beautiful landscape changes with the seasons, and a round of golf at Giants Ridge is the perfect way to experience the fall colors in this part of the country.

Set in the rugged beauty of the Mesabi Iron Range, Giants Ridge boasts two layouts ranked among the best in the Gopher State, The Quarry and The Legend, the latter of which celebrated its silver anniversary in 2022.

As the name implies, The Legend offers a spectacular brand of golf that visitors don’t soon forget. Carved out of the Superior National Forest, The Legend is a true “northwoods” course featuring towering pines, giant fairways and majestic views of Wynne and Sabin Lakes. Golf architect Jeff Brauer designed The Legend in 1997, and six years later returned to build a dramatic layout to complement his first design.

The Quarry sits on the site of a former sand quarry and iron ore mine. Striking raised tees and hazards forged from reclaimed and repurposed mine land set The Quarry apart from other courses. With breathtaking views across the meandering layout, it’s no wonder why Golf Digest ranked The Quarry as the best public golf course in Minnesota.

Located an easy one-hour drive from Duluth and three hours from the Twin Cities, Giants Ridge offers overnight accommodations – from suites and villas to rustic and modern homes – perfect for golf groups and families. GOLF Magazine placed Giants Ridge 11th in the Best Resorts For Families category in the publication’s inaugural ranking of North America’s Top 100 Golf Resorts, and Golf Digest bestowed Giants Ridge its “Editor’s Choice Award” in the “Best Golf Resorts in the Midwest” category. www.giantsridge.com

Firestone Country Club

Once reserved only for PGA Tour pros and the few lucky enough to call themselves members, Firestone Country Club is open for public play through its limited stay-and-play packages and offers guests the opportunity to experience one of the most historic venues in North American golf amidst the beautiful fall weather in northern Ohio.

Originally designed by Bert Way and re-designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., the famed South Course has long been a notable venue for championship golf. In addition to being the site of the Senior Players Championship on the PGA Tour Champions, the South Course has hosted three major championships and witnessed victories by the likes of Tiger Woods and Rory McIlory during its time as host of the WGC Bridgestone Invitational.

Legends like Palmer, Nicklaus and Trevino have all

walked the South Course’s hallowed fairways – and cursed them. “The King” made a triple bogey at the par-5 16th hole of the South Course. After the round, Palmer referred to the hole as “The Monster.” The name stuck and a plaque on a bridge near the 16th green honors The King and his three victories at Firestone.

Perhaps the most scenic of the three courses at Firestone, the North Course is a splendid Robert Trent Jones design that opened for member play in 1969. Marked by numerous lakes and streams, the North Course has played host to both the American Golf Classic and World Series of Golf. Now is the perfect time of year to take in the beautiful surrounds that make the North Course one of the top modern golf destinations in America.

Formerly known as the West Course, the Fazio Course completes the trio of acclaimed courses that make up Firestone Country Club. Redesigned by namesake Tom Fazio in 2001, the Fazio Course is a links-style design boasting striking views of the club and surrounding landscape. Its 18 holes wrap around the perimeter of the South Course and is the home of the Ohio Senior Open.

The Fazio Course recently underwent a bunker enhancement project that removed 18 of the sand traps and renovated the remaining 51. Other renovations included improved drainage and the introduction of Best Signature

720, a beautiful white sand used on the most exclusive clubs in the U.S.

To pay homage to more than 50 years of incredible golf history, the clubhouse includes 30 dormitory-style rooms each featuring a view of all three golf courses. For a resort experience at Firestone, there are 57 golf villa rooms sprinkled throughout the property. www.firestonecountryclub.com

Omni Mount Washington Resort

When you think about regions that are known for their fall colors, New England immediately comes to mind, and for good reason. Since the earliest days of the New World, the beautiful region has taken center stage as the quintessential fall destination in the United States. The Omni Resort at Mount Washington provides the perfect way to experience the changing of the seasons and enjoy a round or two while you’re at it.

Perched among the hilltops of northern New Hampshire, the hotel and its pair of golf courses offer the perfect view of the surrounding woodlands. The Mount Washington Course was originally designed by the renowned Donald Ross in 1915, and following a restoration by noted golf course architect Brian Silva, was restored to Ross’s original plans. The par-72 layout measures just over 7,000 yards and has

been voted Golfweek’s “Best Course You Can Play in New Hampshire” every year since its reopening in 2008.

At 107 years old, it’s hard to imagine that the Mount Washington Course is actually the newest course at the resort, but alongside the winding Ammonoosuc River sits the nine-hole Mount Pleasant Course. First opened in 1895, the 3,200-yard track was restored and upgraded in 1989 with a little help from a pair of golfing legends, Gene Sarazen and Ken Venturi.

With a signature spa, casual dining facilities, nine highflying ziplines and overnight accommodations at the luxurious four-star hotel, the Omni Resort at Mount Washington is the perfect fall retreat. Before too long, the hillsides at Omni Mount Washington will convert to ski slopes for the winter, but for a few more weeks, golfers can enjoy the best autumn golf New England has to offer. https://www.omnihotels.com/ hotels/bretton-woods-mount-washington 603.278.1000

Pound Ridge Golf Club

Just an hour away from the bright lights of the Big Apple, Pound Ridge Golf Club is the perfect place to escape the urban jungle and enjoy the scenery of New York State this fall. Opened in 2008, Pound Ridge has quickly become a

preeminent destination for golfers from across the country.

Crafted by Pete, his son Perry (of Dye Designs) and longtime construction manager/lead shaper Michael Langkau, Pound Ridge is a wall-to-wall bentgrass facility hewn from 172 acres of magnificent cliffs, streams and wooded hills. Dramatic rock formations and boulders were left onsite by the Dye team, creating one of the most visually stunning settings for golf in the United States. More than 14,000-linearfeet of rock walls frame a strikingly natural property graced with thousands of trees, subtle wetlands and severely-sloped hills.

Contoured fairways wind through hardwood forests and fescue mounds leading to open meadows crowned by picturesque green complexes. The par-72, 7,165-yard layout features some of the highest points in the region with a number of tee boxes offering expansive vistas of the surrounding countryside.

Notable holes include: the par-5, 13th, home to “Pete’s Rock,” a giant boulder that rests in the middle of the fairway; and the par-3 15th hole, dubbed “Headstone,” which is flanked on the right by a large rock outcropping that protrudes into the elongated, 9,000-square-foot green. www.poundridgegolf.com 914.764.5771
