Joy. That’s what Golf Professional Joseba Romero exudes when he’s asked about his job teaching golfers from around the world at the Riviera Maya Golf Course in Akumal, Mexico. During his first eight years teaching in his native country of Spain, Romero had a chance to play with and learn from the best of the best.

Bermuda 3s World Team Championship Brings Top Professionals and Amateurs to Island’s Best Courses
OCTOBER 21-26
Port Royal Hole 15
“The World’s Most Entertaining Pro-Am” That’s a brash tagline for an inaugural golf tournament just entering the consciousness of the affluent golfer. However, founders Joe Steranka and Ken Kennerly believe it is or at least will be when professionals and amateurs descend upon the world-class golf destination in late October. When the former CEO of the PGA of America and current Executive Director of the Honda Classic came together on this joint venture, their vision was to create a highly competitive tournament bringing four regions of the world to Bermuda. “We envisioned an international competition with pros and amateur golfers meeting people from around the world and playing for their country,” says Kennerly, 30 year golf industry executive, avid sailor, and frequent Bermuda Visitor. While the competition will be stout, participants will also enjoy one of the world’s most spectacular islands during an ideal time of year. Bermuda is a perfect meeting place for
8 Golf Vacations • October 2018
golfers from North America, Great Britain & Ireland and Europe. From U.S. cities like New York, Boston, Washington D.C., Atlanta and Miami it is a sub-three-hour direct flight. Golfers will enjoy a relaxing refuge before the holiday craze kicks-in after the competition concludes. “Our goal was to create an event celebrating the influential role PGA Professionals have in bringing members to exotic golf locations,” says Steranka. “This will also be the first time for many to represent something more than themselves on the golf course. These amateurs and professionals may have played on a high school or college team, but never for their country. Bermuda 3s will build a comradery unmatched in their golf careers.” Bermuda, on its own, is a premier golf destination. The island has hosted an array of tournaments through the years including the PGA Grand Slam of Golf featuring the four major winners (Masters, U.S. Open, Open Championship and PGA Championship). Bermuda 3s, for its part, will showcase the island’s best three offerings. Mid Ocean Club, arguably Bermuda 3s highest profile venue, was recently
ranked #54 for “Greatest Golf Courses in the World” by Golf Digest. The only C.B. Macdonald design outside of North America, it is renowned for its classic architectural features and 433-yard par-4 5th hole, dubbed “Cape.” The famed twoshotter, with its “bite off as much as you can chew” tee shot is widely considered one of golf’s greatest holes. Port Royal, originally designed by Robert Trent Jones, Sr., underwent a $14 million makeover in 2009 by Roger Rulewhich before hosting the Grand Slam of Golf. It features stunning ocean views capped by the 235-yard par-3 16th and its kneeknocking tee shot over a gapping chasm in the Atlantic Ocean. Turtle Hill Golf Club, site of the Bermuda 3s final two championship rounds, has been ranked a top 5 par-3 course in the world by Golf Magazine and dubbed a “Hidden Gem” by GOLF Magazine. No pushover, Johnny Miller once shot a three-over par 57 on this stunningly scenic short course. When the PGA Grand Slam of Golf ended in 2014, Steranka and Kennerly saw an opportunity. That same year, they attended a golf strategy meeting with Bermuda Tourism

Authority. Increasing awareness of one of the world’s greatest “golf islands” while celebrating the game’s biggest advocacy group (the PGA of America) seemed like the perfect marriage. “Having seen the experience from players, officials and fans, we knew the potential of team golf and Bermuda as a destination,” Steranka adds. The focus then shifted from the number four to the number three. Makes sense

considering the history of the Bermuda Triangle region, three island golf courses, three amateurs in each group and the championship at Turtle Hill Golf Club. The Fairmont Southampton, the award winning, 100-acre resort perched on Bermuda’s stunning south shore, is the host hotel (and home of Turtle Hill). The premier property is the setting for the opening and closing ceremonies of the Bermuda 3s World Team Championship.
“Considering the location, purse, international flair and blend of PGA professionals and amateurs, Joe and I believe Bermuda 3s offers an experience golfers can relish for years to come,” says Kennerly. “We couldn’t ask for better partners than the Bermuda Tourism Authority, Fairmont Southampton and our three courses.” For more information visit Bermuda3s.com.

Golf Course Renovation Marks New Beginning At Boca Lago Cc Boca Lago Country Club is nearing completion of a total golf course renovation, part of a comprehensive transformation of member amenities designed to position the private club among the most desirable in Boca Raton. The 27-hole golf experience at Boca Lago has been reconfigured under the direction of Jan Bel Jan Golf Course Design, Inc. and golf course superintendent George Redshaw, GCSAA. Scheduled to be unveiled in November, the redevelopment of the South, East and West nines includes redesigned greens, repositioned bunkering in the fairways and around the green complexes, as well as reshaped and rearranged teeing grounds. “We have incorporated the best elements of the original golf course design with a revitalized approach to strategy and playability,” Bel Jan, ASGCA, said of the renovation. “We provided multiple choices of how to play each hole, with the lakes still playing a pivotal role in the character of all three nines.” Established in 1975, the Boca Lago Country Club golf course was originally designed by golf architects Bruce Devlin and Robert von Hagge. The current
renovation includes modernizing the golf course infrastructure: a new irrigation and pump system has been installed; fairway drainage has been enhanced; and cart paths have been refreshed or removed. “The complete revitalization of the infrastructure will elevate the club experience for current and new members and guests,” Boca Lago General Manager Steve O’Neill said of the $9-million project. “The golf course has always been considered a thoroughly enjoyable layout and the renovation will place Boca Lago among the best private golf clubs in the region.” Walking will be encouraged when the course re-opens, provided pace of play is not impacted. Boca Lago Country Club offers a variety of competitively-priced equity, nonproprietary full and seasonal memberships in golf or tennis/social classifications. Besides the golf course renovation, Boca Lago Country Club expects to complete several other projects late this year, including a complete interior restoration of the clubhouse, new outdoor dining areas, renovated banquet facilities, and refurbished tennis center. Located in the heart of Palm Beach County, Boca Lago Country Club spans 250 acres of pristine grounds, including 50 acres of mirror quality lakes. Tropical landscaping and natural surroundings are heavily populated with some of the most beautiful bird wildlife in South Florida. One of the finest tennis clubs in South Florida, the Rick Macci Tennis Academy, makes its home at Boca Lago. The club also has two swimming pools, a fitness

Rio’s Olympic Golf Arena Open to Locals and Tourists Imagine playing a soccer match at Maracanã? Or playing volleyball or basketball in the arena where Olympic champions disputed gold medals point by point. Sounds like a dream, right? But if golf is your sport of choice, playing a match with friends or even learning how to take your first shots in the same course as consecrated athletes is a reality within everyone’s reach. Open from Sunday to Sunday, Rio de Janeiro’s Olympic Golf Course is with arms open to welcome Rio residents and tourists. All you have to do is call and book your tee time. Designed by American architect Gil Hanse, the course is one the legacies left by the Rio Olympics. In 2016, Rio hosted the return of golf – after 112 years – to the Olympic games and was the stage for the feats of British player Justin Rose, who in addition to winning the gold was the first player to have a hole-in-one (when a ball hit from a tee finishes in the cup) in the Olympic Games. Since then, the course has had a calendar of tournaments for beginners and professions, including the Brazil Open. The 1 million square meter course has 18 holes and carefully maintained greens, golf cart rental, driving range, golf classes, dressing rooms and the entire infrastructure needed for large events. “We are talking about a public space open to all golf athletes, whether they are beginners, amateurs or professionals, and built with what is most modern in the golf world, from grass to irrigation and high performance equipment for athletes”, says Carlos Favoreto, president of the Olympic Golf Course. In addition to encouraging the practice and dissemination of the sport in Brazil, the course – that also has a program of courses and social projects for children – has been attracting tourists from all over the world. “We are now attracting tourists who before wouldn’t think of coming to our city. They come to golf, but they are never alone. Most times they bring the entire family. In addition to visitors from all corners of Brazil, we receive visitors from Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay, England, Portugal, France, Italy, South Korea, Japan, China and USA”, says Favoreto. Use of Tagmarshal Intelligence Systems Increase by 275%
ATLANTA, GA – Tagmarshal – the golf course intelligence and pace-of-play system used by golf courses, country clubs and resorts globally – has increased the number of installs by 275% over the past 12 months. After the first three months implementing Tagmarshal, courses reduced average round times by 14 minutes and realized a combined $7.5 million in incremental greens-fee revenue. Of the seven million rounds tracked in 2018, 73% were played within five minutes of target goal times and pace improved by as much as 30 minutes. “A recent USGA survey shows 74% of players believe appropriate speed is critical to enjoying their rounds,” says Bodo Sieber, CEO of Tagmarshal. “Our real-time intelligence provides operators with invaluable data that increases golfer satisfaction and business profits.” Tagmarshal is utilized by more than 150 golf courses in nine countries. Those trusting Tagmarshal include Carnoustie (site of the 2018 Open Championship), Pinehurst Resort & Country Club (2019 U.S Amateur Championship), The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort (2021 PGA Championship), Whistling Straits (2020
Ryder Cup), Erin Hills (2017 U.S. Open), East Lake (2018 TOUR Championship) and Valhalla (2014 PGA Championship). In addition to marquee golf courses, dozens with greens and cart fees less than $50 also benefit from Tagmarshal. By preempting golfer logjams and creating more efficient monitoring programs, more tees times are created. The net annual gain is as much as $40,000 per course, validating Tagmarshal’s affordability. “We are continuously looking for ways to improve our on-course capabilities and create more memorable experiences for guests,” says Matt Barksdale, PGA, Resort Head Golf Professional at Pinehurst Resort & Country Club. “The adoption of Tagmarshal has been seamless and the system has already produced positive insights for us to implement.” Superintendents embracing Tagmarshal’s technological innovations have been positioning their courses as pace setters in the industry. Comparing player and hole performance data over time enables partners to proactively adjust operations, including better management of pin placements, wear patterns, hole set-ups and labor expenses. Camel River and Atlantic coast means the Church Course is set against the backdrop of some of the greatest sea and estuary views of any 18 holes in the world. Founded in 1890, St Enodoc Golf Club is home to one of revered architect James Braid’s finest designs that is characterised by numerous blind shots, testing fairway undulations, firm greens and its distinctive and fearsome Himalaya Bunker on the 6th hole, which is reputedly the highest in Europe. Golfers can choose to play all three rounds at St Enodoc, although there is the option to play Perranporth and/or Bowood Park. Another of James Braid’s designs, Perranporth is a natural links course set on high ground giving stunning views over Perran Bay. Though challenging thanks to a plethora of blind shots and tricky greens, Perranporth regularly charms visiting golfers though when a severe sea breeze whips up, it becomes a truly severe test of golf. In striking contrast, Bowood Park is set
in rolling hills and woodland, designated an area of Special Landscape value. With welldrained greens and abundant water hazards, the signature hole is the 385-yard 12th, the Azalea hole, which is a challenging par 4 with an island green reached by a covered wooden footbridge reminiscent of New England. o you don’t think Colorado is that large of a state. Well, I just finished an 873-mile SUV journey to three distinct and different golf destinations. Someone once said if you stretched Colorado’s mountains flat it would be twice the size of Texas.
proached my ball up against a 8-foot tall sodded face and asked if I was lined up correctly. No way I could see the flag. Larry said, “aim a little left – if you hit it correctly the slope of the green can give you a good result.” Bingo, I cleared the face and the ball rolled toward the pin.
Now that’s a “stretch” but my road trip was unforgettable including northern Colorado’s Berthoud and Loveland, home of the brand-new TPC Colorado; the remote Ballyneal sandhills of the north eastern plains; and the purple mountain majesty of Colorado Springs’ 100-year old Broadmoor. Test that Colorado 10 percent altitude bump at TPC Colorado and its 773-yard, Par 5 TPC Colorado made some memories come flooding back. There was a day when I nailed a drive into the Principal’s Nose bunker at the Old Course at St. Andrews and that famous stacked sod bunker looked like a Colorado Mountain to launch a 60-degree wedge over. But today this wasn’t St. Andrews, this was the new TPC Colorado and Larry Collins, former European Tour Player, Southern Cal Trojan Pac-8 champion and TPC Colorado General Manager, was there to help. I ap-
TPC Colorado in Berthoud (north of Denver) is the state’s first new course in a decade and although the infrastructure is a bevy of heavymachinery beeps, movement and dust there have been so many members sign up that play is busy. The membership could number 250 by end of year. The way Collins explains it they have been conducting a “whisper” campaign – word of mouth – not knowing how non-members would react to a $170 fee in such a construction site complete with portable pottys. The public can play on an availability basis. The clubhouse, including pro shop and bar and grill could be finished by late October. Phase 2 includes community center, pool, fitness facility, full-service restaurant, member-only dining, and locker rooms. It can host weddings, banquets, and corporate gatherings. Ballyneal

But this golf course and its extensive practice range, short-game setup and putting green (and another unfinished putting green by the clubhouse) is ready for play. Colorado native Art Schaupeter, a protégé of Keith Foster, has designed an interesting layout that is very long in yardage and design features. Views come from the Lonetree, McNeil and Welch Reservoirs and the Rocky Mountains and Long’s Peak – great for an 800-acre planned golf community. Sod-walled bunkers like they have in the British Isles could not sustain the heat of a Colorado summer, so Durabunkers stacked and synthetic, give this course some character along with other styles of flashed bunkering. The land only has 60 feet of elevation change, but the length is big even for high altitude. It is 7,991 yards long at par 72, and features the monster 13th, a 773-yard par 5 – longest hole in Colorado and enough to test pros in an upcoming Web.com event yet to name a sponsor. The second hole, a peninsula 238-yarder with Biarritz green is risk-reward along with three par fours that have the element of gamble. Then there’s the 10th, 377 yards of Riviera-inspiration – bunkers are numerous and the green is narrow and diagonal demanding proper placement of the drive and second shot. The 16th is a beautiful par three of 140 yards facing the reservoirs and mountain views, but Collins says each tee shot could be viewed by as many as 100 clubhouse diners. Maybe that’s why they named the hole “Center Stage”.

TPC Colorado is 49 miles north of Denver, 18 miles south of Fort Collins and located in a fast-growing bedroom community minutes from the famous old railway town of Loveland. The road to Ballyneal – its rugged and dusty but worth the trek Next stop on my journey took me to Ballyneal, a world-ranked walking only private course in the sandhills of northeastern Colorado, minutes from Nebraska, and situated in the extreme boondocks. What a getaway. Twelve years ago a youthful membership with purists leanings immediately were drawn to Ballyneal, when it opened in 2006. Tom Doak of Bandon Dunes fame designed the minimalistic masterpiece and the membership, comprised of walkers came from all over the United States. Members also came from Denver, 174 miles away. And they walked – 36 holes a day – and retired to the clubhouse and restaurant for laid-back evening camaraderie. But one day the question was raised. What happens when the membership at a walking-only course begins to age? The answer was build a 12hole short course and it was named, fittingly, The Mulligan Course, not for a second chance shot, but for Ballyneal’s very first caddie – Charlie Mulligan, who has now passed on. “I think this is a course that will be played at the end of the day,” said Dave Hensley, General Manager. “Maybe you had a disappointing 18 on the big course and decide you want to redeem yourself by hitting some better shots to finish the day before dinner.” Mulligan features chop hills scrub between you and the “Doak-a-bolical” putting surfaces. Some are enormous with friendly bounces built in, but

this will definitely test better golfers. The fun parts also include some huge, breaking downhill putts that will test your creativity. The Broadmoor – 100 years of luxury, world-class golf It was a man named Spencer Penrose who had a grand vision for Colorado Springs. He said it was where the west begins and he built a grand hotel with unrivaled beauty and luxury. European elegance and western hospitality was foremost. It’s timeless and has hosted Kings, Queens, world leaders and celebrities from all walks of life. When famed architect Donald Ross finished what is now called Broadmoor East he said it was his best design to date and that portfolio included what is now Pinehurst No. 2. Robert Trent Jones redesigned the East Course in 1958 and added what was called The Broadmoor Nine before returning in 1964 to complete the West Course -- which is actually a conglomeration of Ross and Jones holes wrapped up in a new routing. Today, the longest consecutive winner of the Forbes Five-Star and AAA Five-Diamond awards for excellence continues to stand truer than ever

The Broadmoor Centennial in 2018 is not only a reason to celebrate its history, but also to renew a commitment to offering the finest in facilities and amenities for the next 100 years to come. It’s a true renaissance. The Broadmoor East Course Few younger Broadmoor visitors know that in 1941, when Ed Dudley was named head pro, it began an impressive, historic period. Dudley spent his summers at The Broadmoor and winters as head pro at Augusta National. He stayed for 22 seasons and was responsible for drawing many of the Hollywood celebrities to the storied fairways. The fourth hole is a 157-yard par three that certainly got Mallon’s attention in 1995. On the final day she took a triple-bogey six here, hitting into the water fronting the difficult green. If she had only made par on the hole or bogey, she would have bested Sorenstam. No. 18, a 415-yard, par-4, doglegs right, with a pond 125 yards out, creating an approach with The Broadmoor Clubhouse in the foreground. In

1959 Nicklaus and Charlie Coe reached the tee all square. Nicklaus hit 20 feet below the hole, but Coe made a tactical error -- his approach flew the green creating a scary downhill return. Astoundingly, Coe chipped his third stiff. It was a gimme, but Nicklaus stroked in his birdie putt winning his first major one-up. The Broadmoor West Course In order to make way for the new Broadmoor West Residence homes, Nos. 1 and 2 were redesigned. The waterfall and pond were removed from the right side of the fairway on the opening hole and the green moved left of the former location. No. 2 has been reduced from a par five to a 435-yard par four with the tee box shifting left of the old location. It also changes the West Course from a Par 72 to 71, measuring 7,158 yards from the Blue Tees. No. 11 is a signature beauty set in a cove surrounded by evergreens and fronted by a menacing lake. The par-3, 232-yarder drops in elevation 100 feet, and the green is 30 yards deep and slants to the water. If you hit to the right side of the green you might get a good kick toward the pin, but you

can also easily chip from the right and roll off the slick green. In a recent corporate outing, Sergio Garcia was present to join each group. One official watching said Garcia made one par out of a baker’s dozen attempts. Beware of the twelfth green on this par-4, 490-yard dogleg right. It appears to be somewhat flat, but just watch as your chip from the front apron picks up speed as it rolls off the back of the green. The novice might think it is flat, but you are now going downhill back to the resort. No. 13 is a fun driving hole. It’s only 361 yards but fairway bunkers shrink the landing area and the approach is testy. A pond guards the right side to a devilish green that is teardrop-shaped. Dining, lodging on a road trip At The Broadmoor we dined at The Grille, Summit, Lake Terrace Dining Room and had drinks at The Golden Bee. At Ballyneal check out Happy Jacks in Holyoke and The Turtle Bar & Restaurant. I bunked down in The Terrapin Lodge. In Loveland we were hosted by Visit Loveland at the Embassy Suites and Door 222 for dining. Loveland’s micro-breweries include Verboten Brewery, Crow Hop Brewing and Loveland Aleworks.

Romero’s early years, rubbing elbows with PGA Tour stars like Sergio Garcia and John Rahm, helped him develop the teaching foundation he shares today. When offered the lead instructor reins at the Riviera Maya Golf Course, Romero leapt at the chance to work at a course that is the centerpiece to the luxurious Bahia Principe Resort, located 70-miles south of the Cancun International Airport. This same sense of happiness and wonderment struck renowned golf architect Robert Trent Jones Junior when he took on the task of designing this 7,300-yard championship layout that overflows with amazing birdlife, wildlife, and Mayan history. What especially impacted Trent Jones Jr. were the surprises he found murmuring below the surface of this land carved from deep within the Yucatan jungle. Cenotes, Mayan Walls, and Golf-Loving Iguanas During the building of the course in 2009, the
construction crew heard water running beneath the property’s limestone surface. To their delight, multiple subterranean water bodies were uncovered in the form of rivers, springs, and open water pools. In the Mayan culture, these open pools or “cenotes” are considered sacred. In addition to these gaping cenotes that are featured in the Riviera Golf Course’s design on the 4th and 6th holes, Trent Jones Jr. was also thrilled to discover limestone walls standing in place on the 14th and 15th holes of the back nine. These walls, dating back hundreds of years, hold a story. Why were they built, what was their purpose, and

how are they connected to the Mayan people of yesteryear? Wildlife is prevalent throughout the Riviera Maya Golf Course’s pristine surroundings. Exotic birds, clusters of butterflies, racoons, iguanas, crocodiles, and jaguars mingle seamlessly throughout the Paspalum covered property. The 15th hole, a prodigious 230-yard Par 3 from the black tees, is the address for a family of iguanas. As golfers navigate tee shots over a series of lakes and sand traps, the iguanas watch as attentively as the Sunday gallery at Augusta. Front Nine, Back Nine, 19th Hole The personalities of the two nines are as distinct as the elements that were in place and utilized during their design. Whereas the front nine draws raves for its legendary cenotes, the back nine provides a bit of relief with wider fairways and the mystical walls found on 14 and 15. What’s in the future for Romero’s course with its intoxicating blend of Trent Jones signature, inhaling fairways, precise second shots, postcard par threes, and true rolling greens? “My dream is for the world to see this wonderful course in a PGA Tour event,” Romero said. Romero reminds that there is a special bonus if you check into their 19th hole. The Riviera Maya’s clubhouse is a gleaming white structure framed in glass. Their bar and grill features a special drink that Romero learned about from an American golfer he’s taught over the years. “The American golfer encouraged me to try a drink made of tomato juice and beer. Here in Akumal we call it Oyo Rojo. That’s Spanish for Red Eye,” Romero said with a smile. Feels Like Home After you’ve experienced underground springs, iguanas with a fondness for golf, and shot-maker situations when you grabbed a five iron off the tee on a Par 4, it’s safe to say that the Riviera Maya is one for the memory books. Playing 18 holes in a lush environment amidst the Yucatan Jungle is hard to put into words for even a bilingual golfer. As you prepare to head back to the resort, you meet one of the Riviera Maya Golf Course’s original employees. Alfredo Rodriguez has been in love with golf since he started caddying at nine years old. Like Romero, this Manzanillo, Mexico native has found a new home at the Riviera Maya Golf Course. As you ponder how to articulate the feeling generating from this beautiful Akumal golf retreat, Rodriguez seems to read your mind. Rodriguez grins and says, “Mi casa es su casa.” That’s perfect. Rodriguez nailed what you were thinking. “My home is your home” says it all. For more information visit: www.rivieramaya-golfclub.com www.bahia-principe.com/en/resorts-in-riviera-maya/resort-akumal

even Canyons

Tales of the ‘Ole West
I
f Zane Grey, the prolific writer of Old West novels, had played golf he would have been a member at Seven Canyons. “I never understood anything of the meaning of nature until I lived among these looming stone walls and whispering pines,” Grey penned. Beware all who come here for a round of golf. You will see the beauty and the mystic power of Sedona -- Tom Weiskopf certainly did when he came here to sculpt a beauty that opened in 2003. On June 1, 2018, Weiskopf came back to Seven Canyons. He’s standing on the elevated, pedestal No. 4 tee box, a par-3, 175-yard downhill beauty. Seven Canyons is rededicating the tee complete with new landscaping and steps.
Seven Canyons and his design philosophies. “That was a great opportunity to spend time with Mr. Weiskopf talking about his design philosophy and how the terrain influences his thinking about a hole,” said Dave Bisbee, General Manager and Director of Golf. When it first opened Seven Canyons was a pristine private golf experience. Areas leading to the putting surfaces were shaved and punishing. You had to pay attention. “We are trying to recapture some of those original Weiskopf design thoughts,” Bisbee continued. “But the spectacular views are still stunning and the setting is unmatched. Players who love strategic riskreward options will enjoy this challenge and each hole has significant personalities.”
He’s admiring the panorama of red-rock spires, the contrast of greens in the junipers and piñons and the cerulean blue of an untarnished Arizona sky. To his left is the rounded ochre features of Rachel’s Knoll, 80 feet below is a contoured A4 bent grass putting surface surrounded by six hellish bunkers.
Bisbee is a perfect spokesman for Seven Canyons. He is known for his inspirational innovation, extraordinary leadership and experience. As a golf pro, he has won as a tournament professional, designed golf clubs, authored several books and instructional DVD’s, as well as instructed many of today’s top corporate executives on how to improve their golf games.
It has been 15 years since Weiskopf put together this beautiful golf course. There have been financial ups and downs, but he returned to treat members with a “fireside chat” and discuss the future and past of
The Golf Course Weiskopf’s vision for this rubberneckers’ experience of scenery and golf was traditional. But at 6,746 yards and a par of 70 the criticism reared
24 Golf Vacations • October 2018
www.golfvacationsmag.com
its head swiftly. “You can’t build a course under 7,000 yards today,” the critics chimed. His response? Nonsense. The 1973 British Open champ recited a list of Top 10 courses that are under 7,000 yards -- Pine Valley, Pebble Beach, Olympic Club, Merion and Shinnecock Hills. Augusta National was 6,850 until its attempt at Tiger-proofing. “Unparalleled views,” Weiskopf has said emphatically. “From sunrise to sunset the colors change and every minute is different and incredible.” What Weiskopf wanted for Seven Canyons was a true test of golf that Donald Ross, Alister MacKenzie and C.B. Macdonald would have enjoyed. He wanted a layout that put a premium on shot placement to narrow landing areas. He wanted small, quick greens with classic-styled bunkering and changes in elevation. He wanted a thought-provoking process. The difficulty is being strategically efficient with some of the world’s most distracting scenery. And the real-time difficulty is being able to concentrate enough to read the correct approach to each green. Weiskopf said there are multiple choices -- low, run-up shots can work on the same approach where a soft, high drop shot can be a winner. But this is much easier said and done by a world-class golfer with the sweetest swing golf has known (Weiskopf) than by a club member with an 18 handicap.
Seven Canyons is manageable from the tee to green, but avoiding three putts or even four is the real challenge for an average player. Observe the drainage patterns, Weiskopf recommended. Watch for swells in the land. Geez, all this concentration when you are playing golf in one of the most spectacular scenic locations on earth? Just enjoy the views and forget about your score. Have folks been impressed? One writer called it IMAX of golf. Surely, Seven Canyons will be a model of golf in heaven. Where to Stay: Enchantment Resort Seven Canyons is private but you can schedule a tee time by headquartering your Sedona vacation with a stay at the opulent, earthy Enchantment Resort. It’s hard to get a bad view here and my large casita included huge kitchen and living room with sliding glass doors leading to a porch or balcony and the bedroom and bath were in another sealed off part of the casita. Enchantment Resort pays tribute to those who lived here first, with a Native American Program unlike any other hotel in the region. Guests enjoy exploring the hiking trails and ancient ruins amidst the Secret Mountain Wilderness as a pleasant contrast to the beauty of the resort’s pool and spa. Pick Tii Gavo or Che Ah Chi for upscale dining and there’s a view from every table. Log on to www.enchantmentresort.com to make a reservation.

ith smartphones becoming an increasingly big part in today’s golfing world, being able to see your phone out on the golf course in the bright sun has become increasingly important.
Thus, the myFlipShade was created by Julie Pickens so she could see her screen without squinting or looking for a shady place to see her phone outdoors. The myFlipShade is a convenient flipover shade that allows smartphone users to read their screen in direct sunlight by preventing glare and adds a barrier of protection that blocks pesky eyes from reading the screen as well. “The glare from the sun on my smartphone always bothered me and I thought there had to be a fun simple way to solve this,” explained Pickens. “After creating the myFlipShade prototype and using it, I realized there are so many benefits. Not only was I done squinting at my screen, I didn’t have to worry about people looking over my shoulder at my phone anymore. I also love the fun designs and colors we are debuting myFlipShade in that add a little excitement and personality to my phone.”
Currently designed to work with iPhone X,8,7,6 and all Plus sizes, myFlipShade slides onto the top of an iPhone and stays in place using a durable adhesive strip. The shade neatly tucks behind the phone when not in use and easily flips around when needed to prevent glare, weather, or pesky eyes. The thin profile of the shade doesn’t add bulk and is compatible with cases and other phone accessories like credit card holders and stands, but the myFlipShade itself can be used to prop up a smartphone to watch videos as well. You can even charge wirelessly without removing your myFlipShade. To learn more visit: www.target.com/ bp/myflipshade
