FLORIDA GOLF ALLIANCE CELEBRATES STATE GOLF DAY IN TALLAHASSEE

TALLAHASSEE, FL – Florida Golf Alliance – a collaboration of leading organizations representing all segments of the state’s golf industry – celebrated “Florida Golf Day” at the State Capitol. Members of the Florida Golf Alliance met with the House of Representatives and Senate to discuss the importance of the golf industry and expansion of related tourism. Based on a 2007 study by SRI International, the state’s direct golf economic impact is approximately $7.5 billion a year, supporting more than 167,000 jobs and $4.7 billion in annual wage income. Florida is home to about 1,200 public and private golf course facilities, more than any other state in America. Florida Golf Day featured attendees from leading industry organizations. ciation of America and Florida State University PGM Program were all represented. “Florida’s golf industry has a direct bearing on jobs, commerce, economic development and tax revenues for the state,” says Steve Mona, CEO of the World Golf Foundation, administrator of GOLF 20/20 and the Florida Golf Alliance. Congressional members also heard from Susie Doyens, Special Olympics Global Messenger from Rotonda West, Fla. Doyens has won more than 180 medals and credits golf as having a huge impact on her life. “Not very long ago, I was unable to speak in front of others except my parents,” says Doyens. “I am shy but I love Special Olympics and golf so much, I wanted to share my joy with everyone.” An interactive swing zone was set up in the Capitol Courtyard and staffed by North Florida PGA and LPGA Professionals. In addition, House and Senate members competed in a charity putting contest. The Senate won 12-11 and a $500 contribution was made to The First Tee chapter in Tallahassee. “It’s a great excuse to get outside, celebrate golf in Florida and the incredible economic impact it has in the state,” says Senator Aaron Bean representing Florida District 4, which in-

cludes Duval and Nassau counties. In total, Florida will host 17 professional golf tournaments in 2013: five PGA TOUR, two Champions Tour, one Web.com Tour, one LPGA Tour, five Symetra Tour, and three Legends Tour events. Florida’s golf industry has a charitable impact of $312 million annually, raised through local outings and contributions from professional golf events. Beneficiaries include Miami Children’s Hospital, Make-A-Wish Foundation, Baptist Children’s Hospital, Children’s Miracle Network hospitals, Nicklaus Children’s Health Care Foundation, The First Tee National School Program, Boy Scouts of America, the American Red Cross, the Alzheimer’s Support Network, Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southwest Florida, and others. Dye— who maintains a home on property—continues to play and tweak his design, keeping it up to date both architecturally and agronomically. CASA DE CAMPO CHRISTENS PETE DYE GOLF LODGE LA ROMANA, D.R. – From their earliest days together to the present, Pete Dye and Casa de Campo are inexorably linked. They would have it no other way. Casa de Campo, featuring the region’s No. 1-ranked golf course, has recognized its golf course architect by naming the popular Golf Lodge in his honor. Dye, who has designed 63 holes at the Caribbean’s leading resort, was introduced to the Dominican Republic in the late 1960s by Gulf and Western, which wanted to invest in the local economy. Among their plans was a world-class golf facility that would launch the country’s tourism industry. Dye was asked to help find the perfect location for this first resort. He pointed them to the thousands of acres of inhospitable land the company owned near La Romana on the country’s southern coast. Site of the most productive sugar mill in the world, the soil was too dry for growing cane and too sparse for cattle grazing, while also overgrown with thick underbrush, rocks, and cactus. But it was close to the sea, a characteristic of the great Scottish courses Dye had toured just a few years before. Under Dye’s leadership, some 300 locals worked with hand tools and ox carts to turn the hellish land into a heavenly site for a golf course. The area originally was given the name “Cajuiles,” for the cashew trees that grew on the surrounding mountains. But Dye overheard the workers referring to the sharp coral rock underfoot as “diente del perro,” or “Teeth of the Dog.” The course, which opened in 1971, had its name. And the new resort had its calling card, a magnificent course along the Caribbean Sea that mixes the best of classic strategic architecture with tropical beauty. Since it

nine in 2011. Dye also was responsible for the private La Romana Country Club, which was unveiled in 1990. Both Teeth of the Dog and The Links were recently renovated under Pete Dye’s guidance. The final nine holes of Dye Fore (Lagos – The Lakes) opened in 2012. As well, more than $40 million has been spent upgrading many other parts of the 7,000acre resort, including new restaurants, public areas, and the main pool deck. No surprise, then, that Casa de Campo was recently named the Caribbean’s Leading Golf Resort, for the fifth consecutive year, at the Caribbean and Americas 2012 World Travel Awards. Starting in the professional ranks, where better performance equates to a bigger paycheck on Sunday, tour players all over the world are light years ahead of a couple of decades ago in terms of how they take care of their bodies and prepare for competition. Frank Gustafson, a Level 3 Registered Physical Therapist with training from the Titleist Performance Institute who works in Palm Desert California, also recommends these stretching exercises to go with your other conditioning and workout routines to aid in getting better rotation— which equals more distance: 1) Sit tall with feet flat on the floor and knees facing forward. Rest a club across your shoulders. 2) Rotate your head and torso to the left until you feel light resistance, careful not to move your hips. Look down the club shaft to see how far you have rotated. 3) Stay rotated to the left and slowly lower your right shoulder toward your right knee. Go as far as you can, creating a slight stretch in the left side. Hold this pose for three seconds. 4) Return to the rotated position from Step Two. Rotate the torso a little further. 5) Complete four repetitions of the above routine. Increasing your rotation a little every time. 6) When you have completed four repetitions, sit tall as and turn to the left through your newly acquired range of motion three times. Take a one minute break then begin the routine on the right side. You will be amazed by how much rotation you gain in your turn. n 1967, Lowcountry land mogul Charles Fraser was instrumental in pioneering the master-planned community of Sea Pines Resort, including dozens of homes and two golf courses. He hired veteran architect Pete Dye and a young Jack Nicklaus to craft Sea Pines’ third and final course in the middle of 400 acres of lanky pine trees, sandy soil and coastal lagoons. The Palmetto State is special to Dye as he says, “Harbour Town Golf Links made my career.” That was 40 years ago when the iconic 18 opened to much fanfare, just in time for a nascent PGA TOUR tournament called the Heritage Classic. The event returns April 18-21 as Swedish stalwart Carl Pettersson will defend his title. For those traveling to South Carolina for the state’s biggest sporting event of the year, there are an abundance of amazing golf courses on the island for public consumption. olf in New York City gets into full swing this spring, oftentimes early than many golfers think. As snowbirds make their way back to Westchester County, Long Island and the Hamptons from points south, tee sheets open for the season, and golf sweaters make their first appearances of the new year. y first Honda Classic was five years ago. Like the cars of its sponsor, the first tournament of the Florida Swing is one of the highest quality and classiest tournaments on the PGA TOUR. The golf course, the tradition and heritage of the event, the competitive field and of course a fabulous resort open to all tournament patrons, combine to make being at the Honda Classic something special. Don’t miss the concert and fireworks on both Friday and Saturday nights, they are truly spectacular! While seeing Ernie Els reemerge as a champion in 2008 after three seasons without a win, the Sunday showdown between Rory McIlroy and Tiger Woods was even more memorable. Woods was at his best shooting the lowest final round score of his career- an 8-under par 62. After eagling the 18th and posting a 10-under tournament score, the spotlight was on Rory to see how he would handle the pressure, especially playing the famed “Bear Trap” holes Nos. 15-16. The youngster from Northern Ireland did just fine posting a 1-under par 69. With the victory he surpassed Luke Donald as the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking. Though Rory has slipped to as low as No. 3 after winning the Honda, he regained and has held the No. 1 slot since his PGA Championship at Kiawah island last August. From Ernie to Rory with Y.E. Yang, Camilo Villegas, and Rory Sabbatini in between there have been five consecutive international champions. The first eight tournaments on the PGA TOUR this year have been won by Americans. There are two interesting trends colliding at the Honda Classic this week. Uncle George and nephew Tom Fazio designed three of the four golf courses at PGA National in the early 1980s- The Champion, the Haig (originally named after Walter Hagen) and The Squire (for Gene Sarazen). Arnold Palmer designed the last course on site, his namesake The Palmer in1984. Jack Nicklaus has redesigned The Champion twice, once in 1990 and again in 2002. A third generation Fazio recently redesigned the Haig- Tom Fazio II, son of designer Jim (brother of Tom) is known as Tommy and is a model Fabio look-a-like. The Haig was renamed the FAZIO. We may be getting into a whole new era in golf where golf course architects replace prominent legends of golf with respect to the naming rights of golf courses. The Fazio is fun to play. The most significant changes in the modernization occurred on the 15th and 17th holes, with the contouring of the greens and the bunkering. Interestingly, the par-3 5th hole and the caped 6th hole swing close by the PGA of America Headquarters. There is a long standing relationship and tradition between the resort and the club professional organization. This is evidenced by the playing of the 1983 Ryder Cup, 1987 PGA Championship and 19 years (ending in 2000) of the Senior PGA Championship on The Champion Course. While I have played the golf courses and experienced the professional competition of the Honda Classic it wasn’t until I stayed at the PGA National Resort & Spa that I truly understood that classic meant first and highest quality. The freshness from a recent $100 million revitalization can easily be seen by tournament spectators in terms of the pool area,

lobby bar and restaurants. Resort guests experience the magic in the floor-to-ceiling makeover of each of its 379 guest rooms. There are several questions to ask at this week’s Honda Classic.
