HALF MOON BAY, CA. – Half Moon Bay Golf Links, the world-class, 36-hole public golf resort set against the dramatic cliffs of the Pacific Ocean, and The RitzCarlton, Half Moon Bay, one of America’s premier oceanfront hotels, announceD the “Legends Golf Package.”

New for 2011, the Legends Golf Package combines luxury, elegance, and tradition to offer guests unlimited play on two award-winning, 18-hole courses wrought by Arnold Palmer and Arthur Hills. Guests can soak up the ambiance of The Old Course’s storied 18th hole, where a plaque commemorates Palmer’s historic seaside par-4. To determine the proper location for the 18th tee, Palmer hit drive after drive until he could no longer reach the barranca separating the green from the fairway. He envisioned the approach into the 18th green as a heroic shot that when well-executed, was deserving of a tip of the cap by the golfer and recognition by the gallery. Hills Golf Club By KatieDenbo

C

ITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. -- If you can't beat (or be) a PGA Tour pro, you might as well join them, on the caliber of golf course you're playing at least. It's one reason that Industry Hills Golf Club's name has long been synonymous with high-class Southland golf, and now in the limelight of arguably the golf industry's biggest award, Industry Hills continues to serve as one of the most well respected golf facilities in Los Angeles. Named the 2010 National Golf Course of the Year by the National Golf Course Owners Association (an honor shared with such past winners as Pebble Beach Golf Links in 2006), Industry Hills is steeped in three decades of history and awards over its 36 holes of William F. Bell golf: the Dwight D. Eisenhower course and Babe Didrikson Zaharias course. Better known as the Ike and Babe, the layouts were built atop an old landfill in 1979, spread over 650 acres with panoramas of the San Gabriel Mountains and valley below. Management's dream of the Ike when it opened, in particular, was a championship-caliber course that could host a U.S. Open with two weeks notice. While that aspect hasn't yet been fulfilled (certainly not due to lack of quality), a major $22 million renovation at the hands of San Diego-based architect Casey O'Callaghan to both the Ike and Babe was. The result is golf courses that rival the conditions of a private club facility without sacrificing accessibility.

"The two main reasons for truly appreciating a golf course are the quality of the layout and the consistency of the maintenance," says Dave Youpa, PGA, director of golf at Industry Hills and a 19-year golf industry veteran. "The renovation guarantees that golf enthusiasts will enjoy the courses at Industry Hills Golf Club for years to come." Industry Hills Golf Club's Signature Layout: The Ike So what about the Ike, the meatier track of the two with a healthy 75.1/142 rating and slope, featuring large undulating greens, sycamore-lined fairways and host to more than 20 U.S. Open qualifiers, major Southern California amateur championships and star-studded celebrity tournaments? It's the facility's signature layout for a reason. "The Ike is a little more macho, as opposed to the resort-friendly Babe," Youpa says. "It's longer, has more elevation changes, and wider fairways. The Ike is literally more golf course, and that's why so many people enjoy it." At 7,200 yards from the back tees and with three other sets from which to tee it up, the Ike is considered one of Southern California's supreme challenges. As Tiger Woods' self-proclaimed "proving ground," quite a bit has changed since Woods last teed it up there. During O'Callaghan's renovation of Industry Hills, many of the Ike's greens complexes were reconstructed, and 100 percent of its bunkers were rebuilt and filled with desert tan and Augusta white sand, the preferred combination of professional players. Each fairway was also replaced and carpeted with Hybrid Bermuda Tiffway II, widely used on PGA Tour courses for its highly consistent playing surface. Thanks to some help from a 300-goat herd, much of the natural vegetation was cleared (or consumed, in this case) from wooded areas, lessening time in finding errant shots. Yardages were added to 900 sprinkler heads, and as part of Industry Hills' Greens Technologies program, the entire irrigation system was replaced. For players familiar with the before-and-after, there's a renewed appreciation for the classic golf course.

"Industry Hills has always been one of my favorites, but now I find it a bit more fun, too," says Rob Brownfield, a 10-index who's been playing Industry Hills since the late-1990s. "Pace of play has improved, the rough was cleaned up, and the putting surfaces are top notch. It's quality, for sure." Noteworthy Holes on the Ike Course at Industry Hills There are several noteworthy holes on the Ike, like the 386yard, par-4 second. It comes complete with an elevated tee (and unrivaled views of the San Gabriel Valley) requiring a shot to a green fronted by a lake with waterfall. The par-3 ninth, a 137-yard shot from the back tees, showcases Industry Hills' famous Austrian funicular, an inclined railway that until recently transported golfers from the ninth hole to the top of the hill (the ride is no longer operational, although the impressive structure remains). The coup de gras of the Ike course, however, is its monster finishing hole. The 18th is a 652-yard, uphill par-5 that challenges even the longest hitters to make the green in regulation. An errant ball will land in an adjacent lake with towering fountain, while even solid shots will require work as golfers make their way to the top. When the final putt drops, however, a satisfying view of the course below makes for a great end to another (hopefully) stellar round. Industry Hills Golf Club's Ike Course: The Verdict The Ike layout at Industry Hills Golf Club provides a PGA Tour-quality course with public accessibility, a great test of golf for the serious player and equally enjoyable for the mid- and

www.golfvacationsmag.com

high-handicappers with correct tee selection. Fairways are wide, greens are firm and shot-making ability is rewarded on a course that rivals today's major championship host facilities. "People love the layout," Youpa says. "It challenges golfers of all levels without being unfair. The Ike is as much golf course as the golfer wants to play, and that's why players keep coming back." Practice facilities and instruction at Industry Hills G.C. A comprehensive practice facility at Industry Hills Golf Club includes a short-game area with practice bunkers, four putting greens and a 64-stall, double-decker lighted driving range with simulated hazards that's open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. The Golf Academy at Industry Hills offers several different options for lessons, including group, individual or clinics. Stay and Play at Industry Hills Adjacent to the golf courses stands Pacific Palms Resort, Los Angeles' only destination golf, spa and conference property. Also having undergone a massive facelift, the 292-room resort's amenities include a recently opened spa and several restaurants including RED, featuring outdoor fireside dining. Golf packages are available for guests at the resort. If You Go Dwight D. B

ellaire, MI – Shanty Creek Resorts, one of the premier four-season resort destinations in northern Michigan, is celebrating the 25th anniversary of The Legend Golf Course this year. Designed by Arnold Palmer, The

Legend gained much notoriety in the mid-eighties as it helped launch the region as one of the most sought-after golf destinations in the country. "I feel strongly we should build courses that everyone can enjoy, not just low amateurs and professionals. The Legend is a beautiful, natural and spectacular site that created 18 fantastic holes," said Arnold Palmer during the construction of his first course in the Midwest 25 years ago. Palmer's words still hold true as The Legend's scenery and playability make it one of the most popular resort courses in the country. Golf Digest quickly ranked The Legend among the top 50 resort courses in the nation when it opened, and it is still considered one of the top courses in Michigan by the leading publication. To celebrate this historic course, Shanty Creek Resorts is offering special 25th anniversary rates throughout the 2011 golf season. This spring, golfers can play The Legend for just $25 anytime through May 12. In addition, golfers can take advantage of the $25 rate after 4:00pm from May 13 through the end of the golf season. The Legend weaves its way through beautiful hills and ridges while still offering stunning views of Lake Bellaire and the surrounding northern Michigan forest. The course is highlighted by two of the prettiest holes in the region, the 3rd and 7th. The par 4 3rd hole swings downhill from left to right with panoramic views of Lake Bellaire as a backdrop. The 7th hole is arguably the best par 5 in northern Michigan. Measuring 501 yards, this risk-reward hole doglegs to the right and features a creek that winds around the hole and in front of the green providing excitement for both your drive and second shot.

Checking In On The Newest High Tech Golf Clothing

I

t wasn’t that long ago that when the subject of golf clothing was brought up that a sweater, rain jacket and shorts for warmer days was as far as the discussion needed to go. In addition to the everyday pants and shirt, these were pretty much the only extras most people considered and it made packing for a day of golf or a trip to some far-away resort pretty simple. But just as golf balls and clubs have evolved over the years, so has the science of apparel for the many weather conditions that the sport throws its participants into. Today’s player really has some advantages not even dreamed about a few years ago as the advances in natural fabrics blends, synthetics and design have made dressing for the course not only a fashion statement but an integral part of staying comfortable and providing the best environment to play at the top of your game. During the late winter and early spring, depending on the part of the country or world you are playing, changing temperatures can be all over the map, and most of the manufactures of golf clothing today are concentrating on providing an array of options for “layering” so that players can build a warmer or lighter outfit by adding or subtracting pieces. Starting with base layers such as long sleeve mock shirts and compression tops, and then covering these with shirts, half pullovers, sweaters, vests, full jackets, complete rain suites that feature a number of new high-tech materials that can keep moisture away from the body, keep you warm, dry and protect from the rain in ways that could only be imagined a few years ago. For golfers who travel, these new, mostly light-weight and performance-based products are the most comfortable ever for the changing weather that one encounters during the colder months, and are designed to be peeled off as things get warmer and still provide easy movement and a top level of comfort. Here is a look at some of the top choices when it comes to some of the new high tech golf apparel for a variety of conditions and climates:

adidas Golf - In order to develop its latest outerwear collection, adidas Golf launched a full-scale investigation to further discover and understand the performance needs of serious golfers. After multiple rounds of extensive testing, adidas Golf has introduced its flagship rain suite--the ClimaProof Storm Ultimate Jacket and ClimaProof Storm Ultimate Pant. A similar version, the ClimaProof Storm All-Weather Caddy Suit, was selected as the official supplier of the Bandon Dunes, Oregon caddy force who is challenged daily by the Pacific Northwest’s ever-changing weather conditions. The ClimaProof Storm Ultimate Jacket and Ultimate Pant combines reenforced construction with a full fit. Modern materials and industry-leading features that provide the best possible protection, and incorporates lightweight, reinforced double-layer shoulder inserts, 26

four-way mechanical stretch for easy movement and comfort and fully seam-sealed waterproof zippers. Other selections by addias Golf include the ClimaProof Rain Provisional Jacket and ClimaProof Rain Provisional Pant that are highly wind-resistant, fully seam-sealed, and waterproof to 3,000mm and offer breathability of 3,000gm/m2/24hrs. Each includes a one-year waterproof warranty. In addition to being highly wind- and water-resistant, the ClimaProof Wind products are lightweight and water resistant up to 600mm. As the climate moves, adidas Golf offers a variety of layering pieces in multiple weights and styling, all with performance elements such as wicking and breathability to maximize the golfer’s own unique microclimate. adidas also offers a great under layer in the ClimaCompression Thermal long sleeve mock that not only provides warmth as a base garment under a polo shirt or outerwear, but also provides muscle support. It is a heavier weight thermal fabrication of 90 percent Polyester and 10 percent Spandex that improves muscle endurance, optimizes body warmth and allows for great freedom of movement. For more information: www.adidasgolf.com Antigua - Antigua's varied outerwear collection is created to function in various climates with a trend that focuses on layering. The current opinion is that weather fluctuations throughout the day make it easier to take off-and-add on layers to adjust for comfort and function. Antigua has offerings to meet this demand. To demonstrate, as pieces of the Antigua layering line-up start as base layers they can be combined with wind resistant or water resistant wind shirts and jackets as well as with fuller weight pieces to function against more inclement weather. Antigua has an excellent base layer long sleeve mock called Hero. Using Antigua's proprietary Desert Dry moisture management technology, it is constructed with a hyper-micro poly fleeced backing against a super soft interlock face which has enough weight to be worn alone and light enough that it layers remarkably well. Add to that the next tier in style – Succeed, consisting of a contemporary color block stretch jersey half zip shell with a micro fleece brushed back which can be worn on its own, under a jacket, over a base layer--or both depending on climate and preference. To round out Antigua’s outerwear collection offering, styles are developed to function according to climate needs. Antigua has a great wind shirt and wind jacket in styles Rendition and Highland. They have created the Antech Desert Breeze wind block fabric to serve as a guard against wind while offering warmth. Made with a two-way stretch laminated jersey bonded to a water resistant membrane, Rendition and Highland both offer water resistance as well www.golfvacationsmag.com

as comfort against the wind and rain. Rendition, styled with contemporary color blocking details, is available as a traditional pullover wind shirt while Highland is designed as a full zip front wind jacket. The stretch aspect of these pieces allows them to be multi functional – on the course and off. Antigua has a variety of great golf jackets. Style Motion as a full zip jacket is constructed with a stretch jersey face bonded against a high-low fleece wave pattern engineered for warmth and allowing breathability for comfort. Style Explorer is built for warmth while being light weight and ideal for layering. With its water resistant woven shell bonded against a microfleece inner core, Explorer wears and travels well and is well suited for both cold and precipitation alike. Antigua equally offers thinlayer micro fleece shells in both pullover, as well as full zip styling as exceptional layering options in styles Frost and Sleet as well as traditional fleece hooded styles in both a pullover as well as full front zip styling. Footjoy - Promoting its “layering up” system heavily, Footjoy has created performance apparel developed specifically for golf and centered on the goal to “Make Every Day Playable”. Featuring new materials, patterns and silhouettes, the 2010-2011 outerwear line is engineered around a new FJ Layering System which offers layers for every playing condition. The layering system uses lightweight, thinner, stretchable, more breathable garments that allow the player to regulate body temperature and better adapt to changing weather conditions while also enjoying a complete range of motion during the golf swing. The base layer provides an initial layer of moisture management/comfort and is essential for regulating body temperature by moving perspiration away from the body to allow for a warm, dry core. This layer is anchored by the introduction of the ProDry® Performance Base Layer - a non-restricting, long-sleeve layer with an anti-microbial finish to eliminate odor that fits closely to the skin to help regulate body temperature without interfering with the golfer's swing. The mid layer adds versatility during changing weather conditions. This layer features the all-new Performance Half-Zip Pullover, which offers four-way stretch fabric to ensure the golfer can swing with complete range of motion. The outer layer has been FootJoy's signature layer for years. The popular and versatile DryJoys® Tour Collection has been completely redesigned and now features the FJ Protect Waterproof System. The DryJoys Tour Collection, which includes the Rain Jacket, Rain Shirt, Short Sleeve Rain Shirt and Rain Pants, also offers an updated silhouette for today’s athletic player. For more information: www.footjoy.com. Ultimate Workout Gear - This specialty company has targeted golfers with a range of high-tech compression products that can be used in a wide range of climates. The company’s compression shorts and tops support the large muscle groups for the upper legs and stomach and help hold the muscle groups in proper alignment during physical activity. In colder weather as an under garment, their compression apparel reduces muscle vibration, a significant factor in muscle fatigue. These compression shorts provide help in reducing fatigue because of the added support in the hips and the reduced vibration to the muscles supporting that area of the body. The secret behind the UWG compression clothing is a new Lycra® Power fabric material by DuPont with 40% more compression that surrounds and supports the muscles and significantly reduces muscle vibration, a main cause of fatigue and helps the wearer achieve and sustain high-levels of force and power production during intense activity. The Polar Gear™ cold weather compression tops have a double layer around the body for even the coldest days that is moisture wicking and antimicrobial. SWEETSTUFF T

aylorMade Golf is calling it a “white out” to promote its two new drivers for 2011 with white heads, but it has been more like a blizzard within the golf community as the buzz about the “white driver” seems to be evident not only among golf retailers but among players everywhere. The latest in the “R” series of adjustable drivers—the R11—and the new addition to the tried and true “Burner” line—the SuperFast 2.0— just became available in February and are setting records with not only sales but with players putting it into their bags on the professional tours. The white crown color and black PVD face provides optimum contrast against the ground to make the R11 and new Burner 2.0 drivers easier to aim. This advantage is even more pronounced in lower light, such as when the tee box is in shade or shadow, on overcast days or when the sun is low in the morning and in the evening. The matte white crown also eliminates high-intensity "hot spots" caused by reflected sunlight that afflicts gloss-finish metalwoods.

But it is under the hood that the R11 shines with some further technological advances to TaylorMade’s already popular adjustable mechanisms that allow players to make adjustments to their driving club as if they had a Tour Van in their bag. The R11 utilizes the company's "Three Dimensions of Distance" and 3D tuning technologies that allows players to independently tune loft, face angle and flight path in order to maximize distance off the tee. The clubhead's new aerodynamic shape promotes faster clubhead speed for more distance, while allowing up to 100 yards of side-to-side trajectory change. The Introduction of Adjustable Sole Plate (ASP) Technology allows you to change the face angle of the club at setup to compensate for changing the club’s loft using the Flight Control Technology (FCT) that became popular on the previous R9 series by unscrewing the shaft from the head and dialing in changes in the loft and lie. When these changes were made it created changes to the face angle – increase loft and the face angle closes; decrease loft and the face angle opens. Adjustable Sole Plate solves that problem by allowing 28

G O L F VA C AT I O N S • M A R C H 2 0 1 1

you to adjust the face angle independently of the loft, which is controlled by FCT. The Moveable Weight Technology (MWT) that TaylorMade introduced seven years ago is the third dimension of adjustability and allows you to move the weights as necessary to achieve the desired trajectory bias with the provided adjustment wrench. The ball directional tendency goes towards the side that the heavy weight is placed. For example, move the 10-gram to the heel side to create more draw bias. The R11 driver is designed with a new, modern-classical clubhead shape intended to suit the eye of better players, while still providing forgiveness and confidence for average players. The shape is more contemporary in appearance than traditional drivers, and slightly triangular to create a modern yet classical address silhouette. The triangular shape creates more inertia and a deeper back center of gravity position for greater stability and forgiveness. At 440cc, the R11 appears slightly larger due to its white crown color. Most golfers recognize address size relative to the size of the ball as a key confidence builder. The R11 is equipped standard with a Fujikura Blur 60-gram shaft, which features a medium-firm tip profile in a 45.75-inch length. The Tour Preferred version (TP) offers 19 shaft options, including the Aldila Rip shaft that has been popular on tour. The driver comes in two lofts--9° and 10.5°. The TaylorMade Burner SuperFast 2.0 is TaylorMade's lightest driver at only 279 grams. Its large cone face and new clubhead shape provide the largest sweetspot on a TaylorMade driver, and its light weight combined with longer (46.5-inch) shaft combine for added distance off the tee—as much as five yards more than the previous generation of Burner. The Burner has been TaylorMade’s most popular driver over the past four years, and the latest version features a Matrix Ozik XCon 4.8 shaft, which is both ultra-light and tip-soft, helping the golfer generate more ball speed, a higher launch angle and more spin to promote more distance. he other big story during the early part of this year in the golf equipment category is the release of the new versions of the Titleist ProV1 golf ball line to highlight the 10th anniversary of the probably the most popular golf ball franchise ever. The original version of the ProV1 revolutionized golf ball construction and took the industry out of the wound, balata-ball era into the solid-core, technologically-advanced cover period that we have today that delivers both softness, feel and distance in one package. Titleist pioneered this revolution and its latest version of its flagship ProV1 features both increased spin control along with a softer feel for the all-important short game shots around the green. “By implementing design improvements in the core, casing layer and aerodynamics, we have produced the highest performing and most consistent performing Pro V1 we’ve ever made,” said Bill Morgan, Senior Vice President, Golf Ball Research and Design for Titleist. “Players’ feedback has focused on the new Pro V1’s tight www.golfvacationsmag.com

SWEETSTUFF penetrating flight, particularly in holding its line in the wind, as well as the increased spin control and consistent reaction into the green.” The new Pro V1 now features increased spin control and a more consistent flight due to results from a new innovative ZG process core technology, responsive ionomeric casing layer, urethane elastomer cover and spherically tiled 352 tetrahedral dimple design. This new 352 dimple pattern with five different dimple sizes (the previous generation had 392 dimples) has more surface coverage and three axes of symmetry. Titleist has also made improvements to its other version of this ball—the lower-spinning ProV1x—that has resulted in a higher ball flight—especially off the irons--extra carry and a softer feel on the greens than the previous editions. Designed for players with a faster swing speed who will pick up distance with less spin, the new ProV1x has a four-piece multi-component design featuring a large, high velocity dual core with a soft center, responsive ionomeric casing layer, urethane elastomer cover and a new spherically tiled 328 tetrahedral dimple design (previous generation had 332 dimples). This high coverage dimple pattern with seven different dimple sizes has three axes of symmetry and produces a higher trajectory for Pro V1x's longer distance and a consistent flight that cuts through windy conditions. The Pro V1x retains its urethane elastomer cover for soft feel and durability. “The new Pro V1x has a new 328 tetrahedral dimple design which is exceptionally efficient aerodynamically,” added Morgan. “The combination of the Pro V1x’s higher trajectory and very low spin results in longer distance. While any distance gains are certainly player dependent, most Pro V1x players have noticed that it peaks further downrange and carries farther than their prior generation Pro V1x. They have also experienced excellent performance in windy conditions.” Both versions of the ProV1 have their advantages, depending on a player’s strengths and tendencies. Titleist also offers a very good fitting guide to choosing which ball is most suitable on its web site. For more information: www.titleist.com.

to putt on the correct plane, square the club face and achieve correct stroke path and acceleration. The Perfect Plane helps players find out for sure whether they have the proper arc for flush putts. The Perfect Plane's unique shape sets the club on the proper plane throughout the putting stroke. It is lightweight and easy to carry while being extremely effective in building a reliable putting stroke. With this device, the golfer putts on an arc despite the fact that the product has a straight panel. The golfer still opens and closes the putter face naturally as it moves back and through, as it moves off the ground. This creates a natural arc and keeps the putter face very square through impact. They can also force a straight back, straight through path by manipulating the putter face. Tees can be inserted into the face of the putting board to show the proper backswing and forward swing lengths. This is a great little device to include in your golf bag to practice with before the round. SKLZ, the company that distributes this training aid, was founded by successful entrepreneurs John Sarkisian and Rick LaPointe in 2002. With the assistance of top golf instructor Rick Smith, the company has enjoyed success in the the golf market with a large collection of training aids that are currently being used by a wide range of players. COASTAL VIETNAMESE RESORTS INVITE HOLIDAY-MAKERS TO 'GOLF THE BEACH’

PHAN THIET, Vietnam - Two of Vietnam's premier courses have joined forces in a bid to lure more golfers to one of the country's most activity-rich tourist areas. Ocean Dunes Golf Club in Phan Thiet and Sea Links Golf & Country Club in nearby Mui Ne have formed Golf the Beach: Vietnam's Must-Play Getaway, to better showcase the virtues of this sandy strip along the country's southeastern coast. The partnership's web hub, www.golfthebeachvn.com, goes live today. "It's about strength in numbers, and that's why Golf the Beach is a very exciting development indeed," said Stephen Banks, general manager at Sea Links. "We've got two excellent championship courses here, with several more in the planning and construction stages, but this is the first time the Mui Ne/Phan Thiet area has been promoted as a golfing destination. "We think it has major potential. We're so close to Ho Chi Minh City, but a day or two has never done this region justice. Golf the Beach merely states the obvious: Golfers can come and play two of the best courses in Vietnam, each within 15 minutes of the other. At night, in between rounds, they can avail themselves of everything else the region has to offer." These non-golfing attractions are legion, which is why the Mui Ne/Phan Thiet strip has developed in recent years into a prime draw for both foreign and Vietnamese tourists. Sandy beaches, reliable sun, cooling breezes, and plentiful restaurants, accommodations and nightlife make Mui Ne in particular the country's top beach destination. To the north lie the famed Red Sands of Mui Ne while, to the south, stretch kilometers of open, quiet roads perfect for extended moped excursions to undeveloped beaches of one's own choosing. At the same time, dependable wind and warm water have turned Mui Ne/Phan Thiet into one of the most popular spots for windsurfing and kite surfing in all of Southeast Asia. "Or maybe you'd rather take the cable car up Ta Cu and lay down beside the largest recumbent Buddha in Southeast Asia," said Glenn Cassells, director of golf at Ocean Dunes GC. "There's a very relaxed feel about this part of Vietnam, both on and off the golf course. But it's a beach destination at heart, and the vibe reflects that. It's clean, sunny, slow and casual — especially when you're coming from a place like Ho Chi Minh City, or any big city. It's a place to truly get away." Golf has long been a stitch in this fabric. The Nick Faldo-designed course at Ocean Dunes has been a linchpin of the Vietnamese golf scene since opening in 1996. Indeed, it was the first modern

resort course built in this country, the first to open outside the urban hubs of HCMC and Hanoi. Sea Links, an attractive and formidable test created by acclaimed course architecture firm Golfplan, joined it in 2008, the product of a golf course development boom that still holds sway up and down the country. The two courses offer golfers wildly contrasting yet equally compelling experiences. Ocean Dunes is laid out at sea level — directly beside the East Sea — and combines elements of firm-and-fast links play, Florida resort golf, and colorful pine barrens. There are several standout holes that weave their way through the track's dunescape, coniferous forest and chain of lakes. However, the uphill 9th - a par-3 played through a funnel of casuarinas pines to a raised green at seaside - is regularly voted among the best short holes in the world. Sea Links, meanwhile, is more expansive and its dramatic location — amidst the dunes high above Mui Ne — offers spectacular long views of the East Sea. The undulating course is challenging; many experts rate it the toughest in the country. It measures 7,617 yards from the back tees, and holes such as the 4th - a treacherous long par-4 - and the signature dogleg 7th are as testing as they are visually pleasing. "The two courses complement each other by being so very different," confirmed Banks. "One is a flat course, one is hilly. One is more of a traditional design and one is thoroughly modern. Both are great courses, however, and they are never anything less than exhilarating. Golfers who come to this area for a golf week will almost definitely play both tracks more than once. That's both our calling card and our mission." "We've got everything in place," Cassells added. "As well as having two championship courses, this area has its own micro-climate so conditions are way better than the rest of Vietnam for much of the year. Cool breezes and sunshine - that's every golfer's dream."

MYTURN

by MARKSIEGEL GolfAsian.com

Smiling Caddies, Sunshine, and Thailand Golf L iving in Thailand, perhaps we take for granted the pleasures of playing a round of golf. In most of Europe and the US, snow has put a damper on all hopes for that post New Year round with your golf buddies. Can’t get the car out of the deep drifts! Here in Thailand we are experiencing our own winter weather.... a beautiful 25 degrees centigrade with a cool breeze!

How about those dreaded rush hour traffic jams or clogged city roads? No panic with the traffic to get to the course on time in Thailand though. Just relax in the back of your limo while your driver takes you directly to the course. Upon arrival at any Thailand golf course, open the car door and immediately a smiling caddie says ‘Sawadee Ka ‘ and will take your clubs from you, and may even offer you a welcome drink and a cold towel. Once you have registered, changed and found your golf buggy, it’s off to the practice range to hit some balls. Here your caddie will hand you your clubs and even pick up your balls from the pitching area after you hit. When it’s time to go, the starter will check your ticket, and then you are all set to golf.

If you have never played with a caddie before, the experience can be a bit daunting to begin with, however you soon realize that they are there to make your round that much more enjoyable. Most of the caddies in Thailand are female, between 18 - 25 years of age and make their living by caddying 4-5 times a week. The golf club normally charges the golfer a caddie fee of Baht300 (8 Euros) and then it’s up to you to give them a tip at the end. If you ask your caddie how much, the normal response is ‘It is up to you.’ Baht 300 (8 Euros again) tip for 18 holes is the norm, although if you go round in a low score or get a hole in one, then feel free to increase the tip in proportion to your enjoyment. Not only are the caddies often very pretty and fun to be with, they know each hole as they often golf and they see everyone play the course all year round. So as a Thailand golf holidaymaker it is best to take your caddie’s advice on where to aim from the tee box, and how to read the greens. Most caddies have nick names like Beer, Fat, Oil or Shrimp. (No Joke!) So easy are they to remember, feel free to use their nicknames throughout your round! At the end of the round, your caddie will ask you to count your clubs before taking them back to your car. They will often give you their ID card with their name and number on. You then can slot it into the evaluation box marked good or excellent! If you liked your caddie, make a note of her number, in case you return and want the club to book her for your second round there. Just another reason why playing “Golf In Thailand Always Amazes You”! Golfasian is a leading inbound golf tour operator in Thailand, Vietnam, and Cambodia offering tailor-made golf holidays, vacations and pre-made golf package tours.
