NORTH BEACH CULTURAL CENTER AND MASTER PLAN
3
Through a collaborative site analysis, the design of North Beach located in Calvert County, Maryland was modified for a more sustainable and vibrant town. In order to revitalize the master plan, the town’s streets hierarchy, block sizes, building uses, and historical parcel dimensions were analyzed, studied, and modified. The rise of sea levels was a major consideration in designing the new plan. This plan harmonized the nature of the town with the man made aspects to reduce further damages to the town. WASHINGTON DC.

BLACK BOX THEATER Black box is quite literally a windowless volume, a large cubic room intended to be as flexible as possible. The black box has no fixed stage, a flat floor, vertical undecorated walls, no fixed seating, exposed structure, and catwalks and lighting grids overhead from which anything and everything can be suspended. Clearly the virtue of the black box is stage productions with limitless interior configurations for stages, sets and performers, with the audience occupying movable chairs. The project site is located between two of Baltimore’s ethnic neighborhoods Greektown and Highlandtown. The main road, Eastern Avenue, 11 icludes existing and proposed railroad tracks, existing warehouse and manufacturing buildings, and is one of the busiest East-West urban arteries in the city. The site is considered a Transit Oriented Development (TOD), a special designation that promotes urban design, density, and connectivity. This project was next followed by a housing project for artists and immigrants.

The two main volumes are embraced by an organic curvilinear skin to create a sense of unity and fluidity. The building is placed in a diagonal orientation to mimic the old train rail and create a sense of otherness. Also, receiving maximum natural sunlight was an important consideration for this desgin.
