As easy as riding a bike Having just finished a bike ride down the coastal plain of Northumberland I would have to say that one of the most important things to consider when buying a new bike is the kind of shorts you wear. Today’s ample padding played a huge role in the enjoyment of the day. Comfort is everything when it comes to travelling on two wheels and a quick Twitter poll agreed with me, stating that a comfortable saddle was by far the most important factor when choosing to buy a new bike. It is years since I hit the open road in anything less than a Renault Scenic and my waistline is beginning to reflect this so I decided to hire a bike for a day to see if cycling is indeed ‘like riding a bike’. Would I be able to stay upright and what exactly has changed in the world of cycling? From hybrid cycles to mountain bikes, racers to full suspension off-roaders there are a wealth of bikes out there to choose from these days. One piece of excellent advice I received was that any new rider should be fitted for their bike at a good bike shop. So, where does one start? The ride I was going to do was a basic family route, which took in a few hills, fields, roads and a path along the coastline at Craster so I borrowed a sturdy mou ntain bike and prepared to hold on tight. Careering down hills at great speeds is not my forte and I was more than a little bit wobbly as we navigated our way along the coastal path but I soon got into the swing of being out on the open road and feeling the wind in my hair and wondered why it had taken me so long to get back into the saddle.

by Katherine Wildman

When looking to buy a new bike rather than hire one, one of the first things you need to think about is where are you going to store your new purchase? If you have a cavernous garage or an empty shed then the cycling world is your oyster but if you live in an upstairs flat then you m i g h t con si der the option of the foldaway bike that has the added benefit of being portable. Families with younger children are no longer restricted to child bike seats. Trailer buggies and bolt on trailer bikes now allow parents to get out onto the road and to cover a fair few miles with the kids in tow before the calls to stop for loo breaks and ice creams rise from the rear. Hybrid bikes are a new cross between a racing bike and a mountain bike and are designed for city dwellers and commuters. Their upright positioning gives better visibility in traffic than the drop handlebars of a racer and thin tyres mean that they are speedy and easy to handle on busy roads. For the off-road rider there are a multitude of choices, from carbon fibre frames to suspension forks that wouldn’t look out of place on a tractor. Two-inch thick tyres that can cope with all terrains grace sturdy looking machines that can cost around the same as a small car. As for me: it was like riding a bike in that I had remembered how to cycle and the padded shorts meant that even when I did fall into a patch of thistles, I didn’t feel a thing.

A Warm Welcome Awaits at Pontprennau Community Church Centre The ra pid de ve lop me nt of Pontprennau from the mid 1990s was accompanied by a bold vision from local clergy of various denominations. With the backing of Cytûn (Churches together in Wales), a Church was set up in the local Community Centre with the aim of providing a place of worship for Christia ns of a ll denominations.

We currently have something for all ages running during the week: an over 50s club, children’s martial arts groups, Boys’ Brigade and Girls’ Association, and toddler groups to name but a few. Whilst meeting in the Centre, groups can also enjoy a variety of hot and cold drinks and snacks that are available from PC’s coffee shop.

Fervent fundraising, coupled with generous legacies allowed the building of the ecumenical Church Centre that was completed in 2003.

Why not pop in and give us a try during the week and also join us for worship at 10 am on a Sunday?

The aim was to provide a Church that co ul d se r ve t he c o m m un i ty throughout the week as well as to provide a place of Christian worship where everyone could feel welcome.

11.00am – 2.00pm, Monday to Friday

The number of young children that attend on a Sunday and a thriving Sunday School confirm the warm family environment that exists during worship.

Available for Lunch time snacks, Coffee, Teas, Cold drinks & Cakes.

The Centre consists of a large hall and various meeting rooms that can be hired at very competitive rates for everything from company training sessions to children’s parties.

Sandwiches made to order & ready on your arrival.

Come along and try our ‘hot’ lunch time menu or a delicious ‘home made’ recipe from our ‘Specials’ board

Berkshire Cowboys Chris Russell As a young lad growing up in a sleepy village in West Berkshire, I used to dream of becoming an internationally-touring rockstar. At the age of thirteen, I formed a fledgling rock band with my best friend George and we promptly set out to become as much like our big-haired musical icons Bon Jovi as was humanly possible. Diligently studying the band’s back George and Chris of The Lightyears, doing what bands catalogue, we discovered that most of do on tour - namely waiting around, posing. their music seemed to be about the Wild West and drew the logical conclusion that any song worth its salt really ought to be written on the subject of cowboys. Pentwyn Ladies Fitness Centre Join FREE during October In February 2009 Dilys Ralph, despite suffering from terminal cancer, became a loyal supporter of Curves Pentwyn. Without fail she attended all ladies evenings and charity events. Sadly, on April 3rd 2010, Dilys lost her long battle with her illness. Dilys was an inspiration to us all and staff and members at Curves Pentwyn were so moved by her courage and determination that they decided to raise funds for Cancer Research Wales at Velindre Hospital. A number of ladies evenings were held and a special day was set aside for potential members who could join for free providing a donation was made to the fund. On September 9th 2010 a cheque for £1106.00 was presented to Cancer Research Wales. However, it does not end here! The month of October is dedicated to Breast Cancer Awareness and, in addition to holding a number of themed days, during the month the club will again offer free joining with donations to BCA. That’s a Funny Thing to Say! To be sold down the river – to be betrayed This saying originated in the American slave states, the river in question being the Mississippi. Troublesome slaves on the more northerly estates were sold ‘down the river’ to the southernmost plantations where conditions were much harsher. Beyond the pale – outside acceptable forms of behaviour Pale in this instance does not relate to the colour of the skin. In this phrase the pale referred to means a fence i.e. paling fence. The area enclosed within the fence became known as the pale, and was considered to be safe and secure. There were several ‘pales’ established across the world. In Russia Catherine the Great established the ‘Pale of Settlement’ in 1791. Others were set up around Dublin in Ireland and Calais in France.

To cut and run – run away, to escape Like many of the phrases in common usage this has a nautical origin. If a ship needed to make a hasty retreat it was much quicker to simply cut the ship’s cable rather than haul the anchor up. This is confirmed in a book by David Steel - The Elements a nd Practice of Rigging and Sea manship (1794); "To Cut and run, to cut the cable and make sail instantly, without waiting to weigh anchor." Get off your high horse – stop behaving in a haughty manner In Medieval times Royalty and nobility rode powerful, high-bred horses which enabled them to look down on the commoners and the image portrayed was one of haughty superiority. To ‘get off one’s high horse’ implied that the person came down to the same social and intellectual level as ordinary folk.
