Don Envick, Ph.D. Class of 1961 Hometown: Kearney

Don Envick, Ph.D.

D

r. Don Envick is a retired University of Nebraska at Kearney professor who joined the staff in 1987. Prior to coming to UNK, Dr. Envick spent 21 years at West Texas State University. At UNK, he created and developed the highly-successful Industrial Distribution (ID) program in the Department of Industrial Technology. The ID program is recognized by the University Sales Education Foundation as one of the top sales programs in the nation and is the only technical sales program in their elite list of universities. The program has also been recognized by the Industrial Supply Association for “endless academic contributions to the industrial distribution industry.� For his work, Dr. Envick has received the Leland Holdt Distinguished Faculty Award, the College of Business and Technology Outstanding Teaching Award and the College of Business and Technology Lifetime Achievement Award.

Dennis Pool, Ed.D.

D

r. Dennis Pool is assistant superintendent for general administrative services and administrator for Educational Service Unit No. 19. Dr. Pool joined the Omaha Public Schools in 1997 after 10 years with the Nebraska Department of Education where he served in a variety of positions. He was an education information specialist and an administrator of data center. He worked as the Nebraska Legislature liaison, and served as education commissioner’s liaison to Nebraska School Reorganization Committee and educational service units and leadership committee. Dr. Pool began his career as a high school math teacher and coach with Alliance Public Schools. He also was a teacher coach and administrator at McCook Public Schools and Norris Public Schools.

Carolyn Wagner Snyder

C

arolyn Wagner Snyder spent 40 years as a university library administrator at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, Indiana University and the University of Nebraska Lincoln. Her positions included dean and professor of library affairs at Southern Illinois University, interim dean and associate dean of university libraries at Indiana University and assistant director for public services at the University of Nebraska Lincoln. She was also involved in major fundraising activities at Indiana University including the establishment of the Bob Knight Library Endowment and at Southern Illinois University as director of Foundation relations. Snyder’s professional experience included international activities such as a two-year appointment as a civilian librarian for the U.S. Army in Germany, team leader for a two-year library development project at the University of Indonesia and library development at the Institute of Teknologi Mara in Malaysia. She served as president of Library Administration and management Association of the American Library Association. She has authored a number of articles about library technology, administration, resource sharing, distance education and international development. She co-authored the landmark book about libraries and their support for distance learning.

ameron “Cam” Sutton is president and CEO of the North American Division of ARAG Group, a global leader in legal insurance, and is based in Des Moines, IA. After graduating, Sutton earned a law degree from the University of Nebraska College of Law in 1973 where he was senior class president. From 1973 until 1981 he operated Sutton Financial Services before joining Alexander and Alexander as senior vice president. In 1994, Sutton became executive vice president and member of the Aon Consulting Global Operations Committee. He is active in the Des Moines area, including involvement with the American Cancer Society, the Heritage Foundation and Greater Des Moines Partnership.

Larry Edwards

arry Edwards has been a long-time supporter and advocate for UNK since graduating with a degree in chemistry, physics and zoology. He is president of The Light Center in Fort Collins, Colorado, a company he founded in 1971. Edwards served four years on the Alumni Association’s board of directors and was president of the association in 2006-07. Under his leadership and thanks to his expertise and talents, the Alumni House received extensive renovations. Edwards has been a diehard Loper supporter for many years and has played a leading role in alumni engagement on Colorado’s northern front range. Even following his presidency of the Alumni Association, he has continued to be involved as an alumnus. He is a current member of the University of Nebraska’s Capital Campaign Committee, Campaign for Nebraska, that kicked off in 2009 with a goal to raise $1.2 billion for entire University of Nebraska system. Edwards has served on the national board of the American Lighting Association, Bank One, Centennial Banks, First Western Trust and the Fort Collins Country Club.

reg Daake founded DAAKE Design in 2001. The company has grown to a full-service branding and creative design studio with nine employees. His company has won a variety of Aster, Addy, Healthcare Advertising and numerous other awards in competitions sponsored by the Public Relations Society of America, the American Marketing Association and the Omaha Press Club. Daake was named Volunteer of the Year for his committee work and his fundraising efforts for Children’s Hospital & Medical Center related to its annual golf tournament, Chip in For Kids. Daake was named one of the Midlands Business Journal’s ’40 Under 40’ young entrepreneurs for 2009. Earlier this year, he received the ‘Excellence in Business’ award from the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. Daake and his wife, Lisa Schwartzkopf ’95 created an endowed scholarship at UNK for the graphic design program.

Darcie Berry

Darcie Berry

arcie Berry was a first-team NCAA Division II All-American in 1999 and a four-time first-team all-conference infielder for the UNK softball team during her playing years from 1997 to 2000. She holds the school records for single season (15) and career home runs (48). Berry was chosen the Omaha World-Herald State Female Athlete of the Year in 1999. Berry was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) All-Century team when that squad was announced in 2009. Berry played on UNK teams that captured the RMAC regular season titles and qualified for the NCAA tournament all four years. The Lopers advanced to the Elite Eight in three of those seasons and was NCAA Division II National Tournament runner-up in 1999. Berry, who graduated summa cum laude, was twice named to the Academic All-American team. Following graduation, Berry played with a USA Select Softball team that toured Europe. She is an underwriter with Wells Fargo Financial Leasing in Des Moines, Iowa.

Darcie Berry

arcie Berry was a first-team NCAA Division II All-American in 1999 and a four-time first-team all-conference infielder for the UNK softball team during her playing years from 1997 to 2000. She holds the school records for single season (15) and career home runs (48). Berry was chosen the Omaha World-Herald State Female Athlete of the Year in 1999. Berry was named to the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) All-Century team when that squad was announced in 2009. Berry played on UNK teams that captured the RMAC regular season titles and qualified for the NCAA tournament all four years. The Lopers advanced to the Elite Eight in three of those seasons and was NCAA Division II National Tournament runner-up in 1999. Berry, who graduated summa cum laude, was twice named to the Academic All-American team. Following graduation, Berry played with a USA Select Softball team that toured Europe. She is an underwriter with Wells Fargo Financial Leasing in Des Moines, Iowa.

eg Gross Minton was an outstanding tennis player and pioneer on the first Loper tennis teams from 1976 to 1979. With the help of coach Jane Moorehouse, interested women petitioned to have the sport added and Moorehouse agreed to coach. Minton played No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles all four years. She was the first woman to qualify and compete in four post season regional tennis tournaments. As a freshman in UNK’s first season of women’s tennis, she qualified for the AIAW post season play in both singles and doubles with doubles partner Chris Peterson. After graduating magna cum laude, Minton became a certified U. S. Professional Tennis Association teacher for 13 years in Hawaii. She was named Kauai Woman of the Year in Sports in 1988 for her work with junior tennis. After moving to Eau Claire, Wisconsin, she has continued teaching tennis and has served as director of the Eau Claire YMCA Indoor Sports Center. Minton is a graduate of Omaha Marian High School.

Dick Beechner

ick Beechner was UNK athletic director from 1987 to 1996 and was golf coach from 1996 to 2009. During his nine years as athletic director, Beechner guided the university in its transition from NAIA to NCAA Division II, began major fund raising activities, oversaw the construction of the Health and Sports Center, facilitated the entry into the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference and brought two NCAA national championship events – cross country and wrestling – to Kearney. Beechner served as golf coach for 13 years, a time that was the most successful in the program’s history. The Lopers won three RMAC titles, made seven NCAA Super Regional appearances and hosted one Super Regional. He was a member Division II Golf National Committee and was committee chair in 2008. One of his golf innovations, the Loper Cup, pits alumni and the golf team against each other in a Ryder Cup format. That annual event was renamed the Beechner Cup after he retired. Beechner has also served as executive director of the Nebraska High School Sports Hall of Fame Foundation from 2003 to 2010 and is treasurer of the Nebraska Golf Hall of Fame. He has also been a key member of the Kearney Area Chamber of Commerce sports and recreation committee for more than 20 years. For his work he received the Kearney Hub Freedom Award in 2009. Dick Beechner is a graduate of Lincoln High School. He has a bachelor of arts and a master of science degree from the University of Nebraska Lincoln.

ack Ramey took over coaching wrestling in 1969 and with the exception of 1972, coached for the next 17 years. His 1980 team was 13th in the NAIA and his 1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981 and 1982 teams were NAIA District 11 champions. His career record was 107-43-1. Ramey coached 22 All-Americans, two of whom were undefeated during the regular season – Rod Gilliland and Dean Reicks. He had national place winners in all 17 years he was head coach. After stepping down as head coach, he continued to serve as an assistant coach until 1993. He retired from UNK in 1998. During his coaching career at UNK, Ramey also served as an assistant football coach. Selected by the wrestling coaches, Ramey was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1987. Ramey is a graduate of Linton High School and Valley City State University in North Dakota. He has a master of science degree and educational specialist degree from UNK.

hawn King has been with Yandas for over 15 years. He has a B.S. Degree in Music Business from the University of Nebraska at Kearney. Shawn plays Bass and Guitar on a worship team for New Life Assembly. Shawn has extensive experience and training in Portable and Installed Audio and Video systems.

Dori Hunt, M.D., Class of 1993 Don Fox Lecturer

r. Dori Hunt graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Nebraska at Kearney in 1993 with a Bachelors of Science degree in Chemistry. Dr. Hunt went on to attend the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha from 1993 to 1997. In May 1997, she graduated first in her medical school class. Dr. Hunt then pursued an internal medicine internship and dermatology residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In her final year of residency, she acted as Dermatology Chief Resident. Upon completion of residency in July 2001, Dr. Hunt pursued a career in private practice dermatology. She practiced at the North Carolina Center for Dermatology in Durham, North Carolina for two years. In April 2003, Dr. Hunt joined her current practice, Piedmont Plastic Surgery & Dermatology. She works full time in the Hickory office seeing patients of all ages and performing general and Dr. Dori Hunt cosmetic dermatology procedures.

ack Ramey took over coaching wrestling in 1969 and with the exception of 1972, coached for the next 17 years.
