Collective housing
academic work Faculty of Architecture University of Porto
Boavista, Oporto 2006 This project was realized during the third year in the Faculty of Architecture of Oporto. It was the first year students started experimenting with computer softwares to project architecture. The program consisted in a collective housing project plus an offer of offices and commercial spaces at street level. This happened in Boavista, more precisely in a terrain vague next to the world-known Rem Koolhaas’ building: Casa da Musica (House of Music). The strategy for

this was to embody the 3 ambiences into the same complex: the offices and their need for visibility, the retail and its need for street life, the houses and its need for a sense of calm and peace - in one of the busiest sites of the city.

Marine Research Center Academic project Arkitektur- og designhogskolen i Oslo
course director: Neven Fuchs-Mikac invited teachers: Aires Mateus e associados
Guincho, Lisboa 2009 The challenge was to create a Marine Research Center in Guincho, Lisbon. The site, a steep rocky sea side place was perfect for creating rock like structures that bended in with the natural site thus creating an architectural object that blends in with the site or, at least, plays by the same rules. Four different volumes are created, with different heights and directions, creating patios and interesting spaces for people to relax and work.

Drawing and modelling was meant to be as minimal as possible, resulting in simple and beautiful designs which were afterwards arranged in an exhibition.

Wallpaper* architect directory 2010 in collaboration with ON OFFICE team: Leon Rost, Joana Camacho Gomes, Eugenio Cardoso
Oporto, Portugal 2010 For this year’s Architects Directory, we’ve opened up the minds of our 30 chosen studios, giving them a dream brief with just a few qualifications. Divided between town and country, the 30 conceptual structures shown here are intended as architectural provocations, practice statements that embody individual approaches, without ever losing sight of the economic and environmental concerns that have been pushed to the forefront of the agenda as never before. Scattered across a selection of sites

selection of sites from the Ukraine to Argentina, half in cities and half on rural sites, these houses are the fresh visions of emerging architectural talents, each designed to maximise the qualities of its particular site, as well as point to new ways of making a home.

Housein collaboration in Ermesinde with ON OFFICE
team leader: Ricardo Guedes, Joana Camacho Gomes, Eugenio Cardoso
Ermesinde, Porto 2010 A client visits the studio looking to refurbish his house. He is an engineer, has a house in the suburbs of Porto, in a very dull and uninteresting area. The house itself is a typical suburb house: pitched roof, full of unecessary elments, over ornamented. The first design challenge was then to simplify the exterior of the house, eliminating all unecessary elements. The second challenge, and the most significant one, was relating the interior space,

A four storey high house creates serious challenge on communication when one family is inhabiting it. A continuous void that cuts through the outside of the house through the inside space creating a strong vertical and horizontal relationship between spaces.

Zen hotel
TAO Trace Architecture Office team: Hua Li, Joana Camacho Gomes
Beijing, China 2012 For one of my first experiences in China, I had the pleasure to participate in a large scale project that proposed to revitalize an entire area next to one of the sections of the Great Wall. The project consisted of two hotels, a conference center, and a secluded area in the adjacent valley where a few hundred club houses would be built. After the ambicious masterplan, I was assigned to design one of the hotels in the complex: the Zen Hotel. With a special character to it, different from your stereotypical

hotel, the zen hotel tries to give its visitants a proximity with nature and a special relationship with the Great Wall. At the same time, its closeness to the wall (the closest building to it in the entire masterplan), posed a sensitive question to how to confront the hotel with this monument. The option was clear to us: to “hide” it underground, burying it, leaving it to the curved courtyards that spread on it to create it’s relationship to the wall, framing it as if it was a painting.

Community Center TAO Trace Architecture Office
team: Hua Li, Max, Joana Camacho Gomes
Shandong, China 2012 For Weihai community center I was asked to take part in this project after it was already begun. A reformulation of the project was necessary after a stepback: a shift in the local authorities meant changing the program completely. Hence I was asked to very quickly (two to four weeks) reformulate a club house design into a community building. The project is located in a public park in the south of China. The request was to create a private building in
39.
architecture
portfolio | joana gomes
the middle of this park. From the beggining this private/ public duality was one of the most interesting aspects to explore. The other aspect was the fact that the plot was located next to a hill, quite steep, which was explored as a way to integrate the building in the landscape. The building is aggregated to this hill and the first floor is designed completely in glass so to create the most direct possible relation with the outside area of the park. Above this base, as if it was floating above the public recreatinal areas, five enclosed volumes allow for the private functions.

First floor Public area: a strong connection to the surrounding park. On the first floor the users can enjoy the gym area and the tea house. A glass faรงade opens up the space, almost as if there was no limit between inside and out. The steps in the landscape create an anfitheater for people interested in resting and create a transition moment between the park and the building.

Second floor The second floor is the private area for specific clients. Five private rooms organize themselves in a succession of closed walls and courtyards that bring light to the first floor. The boxes are completely closed to the hill behind them but open up to the landscape in front. There is no vertical limit between these rooms and the edge of the platform - water acts as a physical barrier so that people don’t approach the edge.

Beijing Villa Riviera X6 architects
team: Manh Tran, Peter Bolsterli, Joana Camacho Gomes
Beijing, China 2013 This project was brought to the office by the owner of this apartment in the outskirts of Beijing. The client, a high executive woman was looking for a quick renovation of her house. From the beggining there was an effort in our part to find a compromise between a preference for post-modern, feminine and “mediterranean” and a more contemporary and clean approach. To inteprete this idea of “mediterranean” and “western cozy” that chinese often have and create something that
45.
architecture
portfolio | joana gomes
satisfies both client and the office was always one of our biggest challenges. In this case I was in charge of designing master bathroom, master room’s closet, and kitchen area. The use of warm materials and textures that remind the client of “mediterranean” like wood and terracota tiles was combined with a use of clean spacial areas creating different zones and atmospheres. This way we tried to use traditional materials but in a contemporary way.
2004-2011
Using materials to generate space: the entrance area is cladded with a golden coloured mosaic. This area works like a machine: all functions are within reach, concentrated in an efficiently organized zone. The second area is a brighter, lighter more contemplative zone, here a stand alone bathtub is located in the middle of the space, for when relaxation is prefered to efficiency, for a long break on the weekend instead of everydays routines. White stucco walls and ceiling reflect this lightness and contrast with the warmer tone of the functional bathroom area.

Using materials to generate space: a first area with shelves and a dressing table where white lacquered wood is applied in all built-in units. The closet space in itself is a darker space in smoky grey wood, applied to all surfaces including floor and suspended ceiling. This suspended ceiling and a single step elevation of this zone make the difference of areas even more drastic, also creating the idea of a negative as if this area was a negative space carved on the white wall.

Datong Solar Park Kinh and X6 architects
team: Manh Tranh and Joana Camacho Gomes
Datong, China 2012 A client that wants to reinstate a sustainable community contacts us to design and build different villa typologies where solar panels and other mechanical thermal mechanisms would be installed. Our goal, as dsigners, was to dsign this houses as sustainable as possible even without any mechanical aid. This was a particularly defiant project to handle in regards to design liberty. With a highly traditional chinese client, the idea of a villa for a comercial output had to be carefully handled.
53.
architecture

From a background that is not commercial at all, this was my interpretation of a neoclassical villa, that is the first demand of the client. I followed this project all the way from the conceptual stage to the technical construction drawings.

Ski Resort masterplan X6 architecture
team: Manh Tran, Peter Bolsterli, Joana Gomes, Carmen Mellado, Chao Zhang, Li Duan
Beijing, China 2012/13 An unbuilt area just two hours away of densily occupied and polluted Beijing is a perfect location for a resort where Beijingers can escape everyday pressure and stop for a breath of fresh air. Using this as our motto, the development of a ski resort was started ensuring differen allocations and activities for future visitors. Different residential/hotel areas were provided giving the clients a reminiscent idea of what a swiss ski resort could look like in China.
