60th Anniversary of Korean War
Prologue
Find the way of peace by ending the ideological debate. 60years after armistice, the boundary of South and North Korea is separated into DMZ (Korean Demilitarized Zone) and CCL (Civilian Control Line). DMZ is restricted to civilians and also soldiers. Military base camps and soldiers are stationed in CCL but it is closed to civilians. Therefore CCL is serious line of defense.
Curator LEE, Dong Jae
At this exhibition, the artworks have been installed directly on the wire fences inside CCL. I aim to continue the exhibition until the last moment of unification. Like the theme of the exhibition ‘Art, open the way for reunification’, I hope the first exhibition in CCL will be the bridge of peaceful unification. I want the exhibition to be more than a one-off event. <the Line> expresses the wire fences as the canvas of the painting. I hope <The Line> will be a suitable name of future exhibitions at CCL. ‘Ten years in an epoch.’ As the saying goes, we have been undergoing several changes and made much progress. We already know the division of the country is almost out of the memory and absurd. However, a long line of wire fences dividing South and North Korea stands still, even though ideology, the cause of the division, has been lost. South and North Korean people have been indifferent each other with the line of wire fences between them. To foreigners’ view, the line is still recognized as the most dangerous location in Asia. One of the foreigner artists who took part in the exhibition visited South Korea to check the exhibition site with his family. He wanted see with his eyes the site since his interests and concerns. He could not enter inside CCL but after having visited Imjingak Pyeonghoa-Nuri Park around the exhibition site, he and his family were able to shake off their anxiety. Presumably the peaceful atmosphere of the park made the wire fences into an element of tourism. <the Line>, the first exhibition at CCL, is being expected to be the first step to change CCL for peaceful space. Total length of CCL is 250 kilometers. However, length of the exhibition site is less than 100 meters. It looks small now but I am sure that if the exhibition can be managed to keep going on, it will extend its size enough to help for reconciliation and peaceful unification of South and North. Last of all, I have received helps during the exhibition. I would like to thank to the artists who worked hard in tough condition and all those who contributed to the exhibition.

Review
De-Military Zone dividing Korean peninsula in half. Young generations, who were only educated the tragic of the Korean War by photographs and textbook, presumably do not have a serious thought of the DMZ site. It is only recognised as purely preserved nature and it is the site that we have to protect for environmental value. The DMZ is too complicated place combined as politically, environmentally and nationally issued matters. Therefor, it is difficult to find multi-cross point at CCL area due to complicated matters. Also, it has been eroding the tragic memory of the Korean War and sacrificed young soldiers.
Curator AHN, Jung Hwan
It is physically visible, but mentally separated and divided country has made me to feel indescribable sadness. This project, which was motivated from “Art, open the way for reunification”, is perhaps able to be a solution for reunifying the sadly separated country by non-language form, Arts. The nonlanguage form can harmonies positive tension, activeness, and balance as works of arts. There is still anxious tension due to military security reason as few phrases of prohibitions. However, this project with passionate artists and art works make me feel sure that it can transform the negative tension of fence site to positively preserved artistic area. We need many of people’s helps to preserve its value and meaning for next project and more. We would like to ask many supports its meaningful project for the great future.

‘The only divided country in the world’, ‘Red complex’, ‘the restricted area for civilians’, ‘DMZ’, ‘Our wish is to be reunified’ and so on. These words have been used for a long time. How long will it be used? Red means north and blue means south. In the center of Taegeukgi, the flag of South Korea, is an red and blue circle. The upper part of circle is in red and the lower part is in blue like our divided land. Red and blue make purple. I built the doors to open wire fence. The slightly opened purple doors…

Politics, ideology, security system, national security, etc. there are humans between them regardless of logic. It’s safe to say that the ideas about humans have been ruled out for many reasons on this land in the last centuries. From now on, interest in humans should be the first consideration. Between them, there we are.

Sometimes I hum a song entitled ‘Our wish is to be reunified’. And then I ask myself why we can’t think about unification more simply and earnestly like this song. This work is asking you about our wish by focusing the word ‘wish’ from the song. The work has been completed by hanging locks on the text ‘My wish, Your wish, Our wish’ written on the wire fence.

The painting I wanted to draw is about the way to someone you never reach. Each color has feeling during the journey to find him. They, seven boards and various colors, are installed alternately and are weak, precarious. The small images, symbol of vitality, are painted like they are grooving and finding the way on the boards. The painting has not been finished and the way to someone might be left incomplete. The way can be washed with the rain, can’t be reached however hard I try, and it may be nothing even I go the way. I should draw painting for people who care only benefits from the world though they don’t understand.

The statue is greeting you. Greeting is a human gesture of respect for each other. It connects people, strengthen their relationship. ‘Greeting man’ means respect for people and buildings around you, flying birds and creatures in the ground, all living things like trees and grass, a rock, air, and all the rest of it. ‘Greeting man’ transcend time, whisper the meaning of life, peace and reconciliation. It sends us a message to move toward for peace and reconciliation at Imjingak the most symbolic place for the divided Korea.
