Clay Storming The method „Clay-storming“, developed with Martin Rauch, was used at MCH. This is a more intuitive approach to building and designing. It is often rather sad that all the great researches and analyses seam to end up in grids and blocks and same-looking facades, and although for sure those systems work well, not everybody can really embrace them with their hearts. Why to design like that, while in our holidays we go to historic towns in Europe or vernacular villages in Africa or Asia? There must be a way to get this quality again in our designs. It is probably a lot the question of materiality and the process of building, that’s why a part of the workshop deals with earth architecture (how to build with earth), but a big part is an intuitive and emotional search for quality of spaces. It’s about avoiding the difference in designing for poor countries or for rich – since inhabitants in Europe or richer parts of the world have no rights to consume more resources than those living in poor countries, just because they can afford it. So it is about philosophical discussions around sustainability and housing, a training of common sense logic, but less analysing. A site in Africa is chosen: Makeni, in Sierra Leona.

Co-housing in Barcelona reflecting and designing for the changing conditions of living in contemporary cities. Barcelona is changing the housing law to adapt it to new times, for that is including a new typology in Spain: Co-housing. Cohousing is an intentional community of homes clustered around shared spaces. Shared spaces usually feature a common house or space, which may include kitchen and dining area, laundry, co-working areas, spaces for children care and recreational spaces. Cohousing cultivates a culture of sharing and caring, promoting frequent interaction and close relationships. Cohousing neighbourhoods are designed for privacy as well as community, residents get to choose their level of engagement thus balancing privacy and community how they see it according to their lifestyle. Cohousing makes easy to form clubs or associations for make an easier living like organize child and elder care, and car-sharing. In the same way the culture of the common generates spaces for occupational and economic activities.

21 meters depth What does it mean having a building depth of 6 metres? And what if they were 21 metres? How does a dwelling vary if it has different building depth but the same amount of squared metres? Which qualities regarding circurlation, access, sunlight, ventilation, facilities location and intimacy has a dwelling according to its depth. In this project, 21meters dwelling has been developed. The project is understood as an atelier in two levels, in the first level the folded walls contain all the programs of the house and circulations, as well as a loggia and a terrace that can be shared. The shades that the volume projects generate a resting zone 4 meters above the first level, understood as minimal refuge composed for floating beds

I decided to choose a very narrow street in between two examples of romanic architecture. This means that any intervention in XII century city has to be consider as a very special context. The project focuses on the organoleptic and sensory properties, understanding the street as a hole and the existing building as the frame. What can be upgraded would be just some pieces of the pavement, using reflective materials to create an urban kaleidoscope, multipliying the existing landscape at the back.

Cost-effective residential high-rise building Being in the business of design requires architects to have a highly developed spatial awareness, and this ability is particularly important when it comes to creating cost-effective residential high-rises. The objectives of this workshop are (1) to discuss requirements specific to cost-effective high-rise accommodation (such as optimised central services cores and economical floor plans for apartments), (2) to design new and independent solutions, and (3) to implement the municipal spatial planning programme sustainably and with a minimum of resources. The following conservative apartment sizes should be taken as guidelines: 1-room unit: 31m2 1½ -room unit: 39 m2 2-room unit: 46 m2 2½-room unit: 53 m2 3-room unit: 69 m2 4-room unit: 85 m2 The surface area of the individual floors should not exceed 600m2 .

STRATEGIES After recognize the current urban tissue, the main building volume designed makes a good dialogue with the preexisting, using the same language. From the north view a non-surprising building can be perceived but from the interior of the community, the building morphology flourish relieving the straight form, facing the urban and picturesque landscape. From a strong and efficient core centered with the plan, the dwelling configuration are shifted in favor of light, allowing it to enter directly in the east west alignment. With all these adopted strategies the distribution corridor to the different units is being optimized generating in compensation a wide and luminous hallway altogether with laundry areas with the same positive characteristics than before and where a wide range of activities can be developed. Good conditions of life. The quality of the housing must be based on the idea of the well-being (pleasure), the variety of spaces and atmospheres, a conception of the comfort other than the one normalized by standards, calculations, models. Dwellings produced today are neither generous, nor spacious and are no longer adapted to the evolution and to the need or the wishes of the contemporary families. Standards mostly lead to build dwellings giving the minimal surfaces and standardize housing, spaces, plans, and even comfort. The comfort normative is now much more often determined by rules and calculations, by the performance of technology, estimated through a grid of criteria, by a financial profitability. Housing has become a product, while it should be first of all a question for the sensations and quality of life. WHAT MAKES GOOD CONDITIONS OF LIFE? WHAT MAKES THE QUALITY OF A SPACE? WHAT PRODUCES SENSATIONS IN BEING IN A SPACE? WHAT SHOULD I FIND IN MY CLOSE NEIGHBORHOOD? WHAT MAKES THE QUALITY OF A NEIGHBORHOOD? WHICH IS MY RESPONSIBILITY AS AN ARCHITECT? Volume, core & shell How much does a building last? How much should it last? What would our building be when time passes by? Architecture is always public and that implies a responsability that should make us think in a time horizon in which our buildings would change and their success would depend on the resilience it has. Thus arises a method to project that focuses on those elements that determine its later adaptations. These are: relationship with the surroundings; structure and core location; the envelope and its relationship with the street and the comfort it provides.

DIDIMUT In the times when tourism strategies are reduced to attract visitors with shallow, banal and simple-minded agendas, top-notch destinations relate their efficiency to the extent of disneyfied space they have to offer. The entire cities are turned into theme-parks full of scenic imagery and artificial constructs – Venice, Dubrovnik, xxxxx, you name it. «Show your Disney side» suggests instant amusement, benign playfulness, innocent morality, disclosure of subliminal and surrender to the childish in you. However, studies show that Disney world reveals a number of contradictory aspects, some of them quite opposite to the well-known and so much loved ideals of the perfect world of hope and joy. Racial stereotypes, satanic imagery, subliminal messaging, awkward body-types, historical inaccuracies – all deeply embedded in the movies of Disney production. Messages such as – beauty is moral, ugliness is immoral, sexual harassment is acceptable, social status counts, everything is fluffy, all may have a serious impact on kids. How to make an architectural agenda out of this inconsistencies? The assignment is three-fold: to place the housing stock in a highly articulated historical heritage,-the Diocletian’s Palace in Split, Croatia- to conceptualize the houses and their adjacent public space with Disney in mind and to figure out a sustainable design.

Disney topics chosen


Intervening in such a context as the Diocletian Palace, we decide to adopt the decision of not demolish anything. Everything in this site was carefully studied, deciding just upgrade those buildings which got blind facade. From our Disney topics we selected: Dichotomy as the scarf between reality and fantasy; who will be the ‚Peter Pan‘s architecture‘that go to the exterior-interior from the window? or, Is there any possibility of arriving the New Diocletian Neverland from the window? The second is Mutation, taking/changing new appendixes of the body. In architectural terms, we are considering the ANTI- NOUFERT as the real matter of space. Finally, we got Utilidor, understanding the Disneyworld Concept as the backup that anyone else can see, however, makes space above be playful and reschedule-able. To sum up, the project achieves the maximum level of interest using the small infrastructure/ intervention for living, that can be replicated as an urban strategy for decay buildings. Lifetime expected of 15 years, the reason why the building technology is a sophisticated experiment. The goal will be exchanging spaces and goods to stimulate the inhabitants. Village extension in Makeni outskirts According to the urban tissue and how it will grow in the next 40 years, the site selection is an opportunity area with strong preexistance and basic infrastructure which allow us to experimentate with strategic urban planning. The selected area will help us to test it out the strategies focus on two directions: Cualitative deficit: studying the actual urban framework and preexistance, understanding the living conditions of the settlements, upgrading some of them. Cuantitative defict: Lack of urbanization and hierarchy marks the path for future developement for equipments, services, sanitation to avoid the informal urbanization stopping urban sprwal.

Polar Bear The target is young, single, medium-high income workers, who work during the day, and the units will be used mainly at night, which is the moment that PCM is releasing the heat storaged during the sun hours. Complementary to the heat gain, the building has a centralized district heating system. The building is integrated in a new expansion area, not in the centre, reason why the materiality of the building is so representative. The building technology is prefabricated and industrialized to reduce time of construction. Likewise the services are concentrated to facilitate their repair and reduce their maintenance. In the building we propose a second skin which performs as a greenhouse and buffer zone, in order to control the humidity and enhance the thermal performance, by preheating the air and saving energy. The origin of the materials is mainly local, birch is the second tree of the area, and Jyvaskyla is well know because of the use of nanotechnology and promoting technologies as Phase Change Material, specifically in this case Hydrated Salt.

Unité de Cité How large could it be? how green could it be? what is green? The project stiches the adjacent city and landscape together to support a holistic, ultra green lifestyle, somewhere between rural hillside living and dense cultured urbanity. The vertical option as alternative to the traditional horizontal consumption of the territory. Vertical Hyper-density, Green hyperdensity>Autonomy from petrol, no more CO2 innocence. It is a design of a new quarter whose image and urbanization logics break with the existent context, visually connecting with Casa de Campo and Cuatro Torres business district in search of a green hyperdensity. ‘What kind of building should be added to the skyline of Madrid, exactly to Casa de campo? Should it be a sphere, a spire, a cube?and it´s only form that counts? Can one imagine a tower that is more than mererly form driven?’’ MVRDV SKY VILLAGE. “Where do you plants trees in a city short of vacant land?” New concept that shows flexibility, where offices can easily be transformed into housing and vice versa. Landscape motivation is The Reverse of the given. Conditions of the pre-urban era. Do we must leave the city to be in nature? Historically the land produced the food and raw materials for the settlement, which in turn returned the by-products, organic waste to the land to enrich the soil. House is an imposition of the land. Nowadays there is a necessity or maybe just nostalgia about going back to the countryside, recover the relationship with the nature that has been replaced by and industrialised.
