Mama Doll back at The Bartlett
Popular local band returns to Spokane with its eclectic, genre-bending music By Saeed Al-Thurmali Contributor

ama Doll has returned to the Spokane music scene in 2016 with a bang. The local band took a short break over the holidays, but they’re more ready than ever to get back on stage. Now, having already played a show at The Big Dipper and won a Bartlett Award, Mama Doll will return to The Bartlett Friday to once again fill the familiar venue with captivating energy and spine-shivering folk. The Bulletin had a chance to talk to Sarah Berentson, one of the lead singers of the band, to discuss the event at The Bartlett and learn more about Mama Doll’s background. Gonzaga Bulletin: How did Mama Doll form and what was the inspiration behind the name? Sarah Berentson: Mama Doll started out as a side project with Austen Case and myself. We just wanted to play more frequently than we both had been. It was all for fun. Jen Landis soon joined on bass and Claire Fieberg on guitar and vocals. Austen moved to Seattle and soon after Kris Hafso joined, adding a full drum kit to Mama Doll. Bart Budwig frequently joins us on trumpet, and we are always happy to have him. The name actually comes from a Flannery O’Connor novel “Wise

Blood,” which I regrettably have never finished. Mama Doll is the name that one of the young characters called their former grandma. It’s within the first 10 pages of the book. When I read “mama doll” I set the book down to write down the name idea and then I guess never picked the book back up again. GB: What type of music does the band like to play? How would you describe your sound? SB: I wonder if any band has come up with a good answer to this question. I feel continually stumped. When you write music it seems so hard to place your music into a sweeping category. I think we all feel like there are nuances in every song that draw from many styles and genres. I guess I’d describe it as folk that is infused with rock, soul and blues. We like to play everything, and we try not to let a genre or certain style dictate the way a song is formed. GB: Your first album “As the Crow Flies” was released back in 2014.
What was the process of creating that album and what did you all learn from that experience? We were able to record with our friend and trumpet player, Bart Budwig. We’d drive up every other weekend or so to Moscow, Idaho, and record for six to eight hours and then head home. I like that process. It forces you to maintain space with your recordings and leaves room for new ideas to form. You can come back the next day or weekend with fresh ears, leaving anything that might have been frustrating before behind. I think every time I record an album I am reminded of the fluidity of music and art. We may go into the studio with a song we’ve played hundreds of times and end up changing it as we record. I like that. I like the opportunity to listen to songs grow and develop over time. GB: You guys have played a lot of shows at The Bartlett, including your upcoming show on Jan. 29. The Bartlett is no stranger to highlighting some of Spokane’s best musicians. In
your words, what makes The Bartlett such a great place to perform, especially if you’re a local artist? SB: The Bartlett is such a special place, and Spokane is lucky to have it. They struck this perfect balance in creating a space that is as equally amazing to perform at as it is to attend a show. The space somehow intrinsically encourages the audience to be respectful and attentive. I feel so comfortable and alive on that stage. The Bartlett is such a safe place for art and emerging artists. It’s full of opportunity for new musicians and old musicians, and holy smokes it sounds good in there. Maybe it’s just me, but after I play a show at The Bartlett I feel like hugging everyone there. It’s probably just me. GB: In one of your newsletters, there was talk about a second album in the works. How is it coming along, and when can people expect it? SB: We are still working out recording details for the next album. There won’t be much to report for a while, but we will definitely make an announcement when there’s more news. GB: Why should people come to Mama Doll’s show at The Bartlett on Friday? Can you talk about Moorea Masa who is also performing that night? SB: We took a small hiatus for the holidays and are so excited to be back in action playing this Friday and sharing the night with Moorea Masa. Moorea Masa is an artist based out of Portland, and oh my goodness this woman can sing. Her group’s harmonies will make you shiver, and she is sure to be a hit with any folk lovers out there. We promise it will be a pretty wonderful evening. GB: 2016 has already started big for Mama Doll. You recently won a Bartlett Award for Best Local Band (Folk). Besides the new album, what are your hopes and plans for the rest of 2016? What can we expect? SB: You can expect to see us playing locally and in the greater Pacific Northwest. 2016 is already turning out to be a busy year, and we hope you keep up with us on our Facebook and website for any upcoming news on shows, tours, etc. You can catch Mama Doll Live at The Bartlett on Friday, Jan. 29 at 8 p.m. Tickets are $8 in advance and $10 at the door.
