HONORSCOLLOQUIA
HONS 290 01 Race & Art in the Americas
Dr. Jessica Maucione and Dr. Shalon Parker
CRN: 29051
Schedule & Location: 12:25 – 1:40 p.m. TR JEPSON 120
People of color have historically occupied a precarious and unstable position in the Americas, more specifically a position of marginalization, displacement, and disempowerment. Whether through the forced and violent removal of Indigenous Americans from their homelands, the practices of slavery and segregation in the Western Hemisphere, immigration to/migration within the Americas, or colonial occupation, the physical and psychological experience of displacement for people of color in the past and present is often acute. Moreover, this sense of being “out of place”has been instrumental in shaping not only the individual sense of self for many people of color but also the collective identity of various communities that are organized along racial lines. This team-taught course primarily aims to look at some of those instances in the visual and literary arts when creativity, race, and a sense of displacement converge. In other words, we will get to examine together how the experiences of racial marginalization and displacement are critiqued, interrogated, and at times “resolved”by writers and visual artists in the Americas. We will also explore through juxtaposition the parallels, points of intersection, and perhaps moments of radical difference between visual representations and literary representations of this unique convergence.

HONS 432 01 CIS: Science and Culture
Dr. Adam Fritsch
CRN: 29047
Schedule & Location: 9:00 – 9:50 a.m. MWF BCISE 043
“Imagining the possible: What is our role in the world?” This question frames the Core Integration seminar. In this course, we will explore our role in the world through the intersections of culture, society, and technology. How do culture and science influence the things we already value in society? Do technological advances help or hinder our values? How might your generation and future generations iterate and build upon the choices we make today? We will ask ourselves these questions and many others as we read novels and watch films that explore the following themes: the folly of technology, the struggle of industry, and the hope for the future.
HONS 432 02 & 03 CIS: Art, Identity, and Justice

Schedule & Location: 12:25 – 1:40 pm
Schedule & Location: 1:50 – 3:05 pm
TR JEPS ON 127
TR HERAK 245
This section of the CIS does that by focusing on art and the role it plays in reflecting and constructing our identity and our approach to social justice. We encounter art in many forms and in many contexts, both inside and outside museums, galleries, and performance spaces. We will include not just the visual arts but the arts more generally, including such things as fashion, film, dance, architecture, music, and drama. We will look at everything from punk fashion to a painting by Velasquez.
Our exploration of those works falls into three rough areas. First, we will look at the issue of art in general. What distinguishes artworks from other objects or events we find in the world? Can anything be considered a work of art? What would that mean? How can art provide a way to investigate or understand or portray the world? We are surrounded, for example, by images of Native Americans and indigenous people. What do they reveal? As aesthetic properties like balance, elegance, and harmony depend upon features of human neurology or perception? What standards, if any, are there for evaluating an aesthetic judgment? Is it possible to make an aesthetic mistake? Is it possible for someone's esthetic taste or judgment to improve over time? What role does emotion, or the expression of emotion play in the creation and appreciation of art? Can anything count as a work of art or is art only rarely achieved? Is it enough that someone intends for an object to count as a work of art? Can art provide unique ways of understanding the world or other people?

HONS 432 04 CIS: Health Care Ethics
Dr. Maria Kulp
CRN: 30288
Schedule & Location: 3:10 – 5:50 p.m.
Cross-listed with PHIL-432-02 (CRN: 24217)
M COLLEGE 133
This course will provide you with an introduction to the philosophical approach to problems in health care ethics. You will be taught to recognize and critically apply various ethical theories and principles with a view to solving moral problems in a rationally defensible manner. We will consider different ethical theories such as utilitarianism, Kantian ethics, and the four principles of health care ethics (justice, autonomy, beneficence, and non-maleficence). A number of problematic issues will be covered, including roles and relationships in health care, caring for persons who are disabled and different, and social justice and access to health care. In this class we will not treat health care as a private matter between patient and caregiver: we will consider how social institutions, cultural differences, and structures affect both the individual's health and the practice of health care itself.
