Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center 2024-25 Season
ENTERTAIN – ENGAGE – INSPIRE Season
Welcome to the 2024-25 season at the Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center at Gonzaga University. In this yearlong offering of live events in Spokane’s newest performance venue, we have set the bar high for ourselves and we invite you to come along for the journey. We proudly proclaim that Dance Lives Here at the Myrtle Woldson Center and have assembled a first-of-its-kind Dance Series of acclaimed West Coast dance companies. Our Jazz Series features an NEA Jazz Master, a Marsalis, and a bawdy European cabaret. And we close the season with a troupe of actors from across the pond performing Shakespeare’s Hamlet.
“The purpose of art is to lay bare the questions that have been hidden by the answers.” James Baldwin
Baldwin challenges us to experience art fully and use it as a lens to better see ourselves and more deeply see the humanity of the world around us. I also believe a theater is a pretty wonderful space to find your joy.
We look forward to welcoming you.
Sincerely,
Stephen Cummins Director, Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center

ODC DANCE: MIXED REPERTORY
Rigorous Athleticism and Onstage Audacity
7:30 P.M. | Friday, January 31
Coughlin Theater
Tickets: $38 - $50
Presenting Partner:
ODC was founded in 1971 by Artistic Director Brenda Way, who trained under the legendary George Balanchine. The company, “Oberlin Dance Collective,” was named after Oberlin College in Ohio, where Way was on faculty. In 1976, ODC loaded up a yellow school bus and relocated to San Francisco with the goal of grounding the company in a dynamic, pluralistic urban setting. ODC was one of the first American companies to return, after a decade of pedestrian exploration, to a more virtuosic contemporary technique and to commit major resources to interdisciplinary collaboration and commissioned scores for the repertory. ODC Dance Company has been widely recognized for its rigorous athleticism and numerous groundbreaking collaborations with celebrated choreographers, composers, vocal ensembles, actors and visual artists.

Presenting Partner:
“Once, there was a velveteen rabbit... and in the beginning he was really splendid, fat and bunchy, as a rabbit should be, and on Christmas morning the little boy loved him best of all.”
ODC Dance brings Margery Williams’ classic tale of a well-worn stuffed rabbit to life through music, dance, and splendid narration. Brimming with wit, festive costumes, and endearingly madcap characters, this production is a beautiful way to introduce kids to storytelling and dance, making family memories that will last a lifetime.

At last…an evening of pure CHAOS! International siren and comedienne extraordinaire Meow Meow brings her glorious brand of subversive and sublime performance to Spokane. The spectacular crowd-surfing queen of song creates an unforgettable evening of exquisite music and much mayhem. Prepare for Piazzolla tangos, Weill, Brecht, Brel, and even Radiohead alongside original chansons. Meow Meow is an award-winning phenomenon, from Shanghai to the dives of Berlin, on London’s glittering West End, to Lincoln Center, Sydney Opera House, Carnegie Hall, the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Shakespeare’s Globe in London. The idea of the Diva is central to her stage persona, but Meow Meow presents a post-modern take on that identity, often battling wildly comic mishaps or catastrophes. Her shows may be moving, hilarious, or even shocking, but you can be sure she is never dull. An entertainment phenomenon! (Adults 18+)

JAZZ
DELFEAYO MARSALIS and the UPTOWN JAZZ ORCHESTRA
Filling Every Inch of the Room With a “Joyful Noise”
7:30 P.M. | Thursday, March 5
Coughlin Theater
Tickets: $42 - $66
In 2007, NEA Jazz Master and Grammy® Award-winning trombonist Delfeayo Marsalis formed the Uptown Jazz Orchestra for the purpose of keeping important jazz music traditions alive, such as riff-playing, spontaneous group improvisations, and collective New Orleans instrumental polyphony. Marsalis realized that the New Orleans music community was lacking the infusion of young homegrown talent outside of the great brass band tradition and chose to form an orchestra that could present traditional, classic, and modern compositions with authenticity. Since that time, the Uptown Jazz Orchestra has grown into one of the premier large ensembles in the world, releasing three CDs to critical acclaim and touring locally, nationally, and internationally.

ALONZO KING LINES BALLET: DEEP RIVER
Visionary Choreography from a Transformational Master
7:30 P.M. | Saturday, March 29
2:00 P.M. | Sunday, March 30
Coughlin Theater
Tickets: $46 - $66
Presenting Partner:
Visionary choreographer Alonzo King is altering the way we look at ballet. His unique artistic vision honors and advances the classical form— the linear, mathematical and geometrical principles deeply rooted in the East-West continuum. Witness King’s genius in Deep River, a collaboration with MacArthur Fellow composer Jason Moran and Grammy® Award-winning vocalist Lisa Fischer. Deep River is a call to keep hope, to make the lotus bloom in the mud, and to look at each other as a family of souls. Created over three years and throughout the pandemic, Deep River is a piece written with the heart, a love letter to a world writhing in pain, served by exceptional dancers.

The Company’s ethos and mission is simplicity at its finest. Five actors take the stage with minimal props and costumes and direct themselves in the performance of the play, with each actor playing multiple roles.
