campus public safety & security LOCATION: Welch Hall, Lower Level
WEB: www.gonzaga.edu/security
PHONE: (509) 313-2222
Campus Public Safety & Security (CPS&S) is a service-oriented department that promotes safety, security, education and personal responsibility.
patrol
CPS&S officers provide proactive patrol of the campus and University areas designed to detect and deter crime and facilitate a safe environment for the Gonzaga community. Patrols in and around the residence halls are a priority. Officers respond to a variety of incidents on campus including fire alarms, medical calls and reports of criminal activity. CPS&S officers work in conjunction with Residence Hall staff, University administration and local police to seek compliance with and enforcement of Gonzaga policies, state laws and local ordinances.
security dispatch
A CPS&S Communications Center is staffed by security dispatchers 24/7, 365 days a year. You are encouraged to call security at (509) 313-2222 to request assistance or report suspicious persons or circumstances. There are also phones indicated by blue lights around campus that can be used in emergencies.
neighborhood
Nearly all assaults reported to Security each year take place off-campus between the hours of 11 p.m. and 3 a.m. on weekends. Please avoid walking alone during late night hours and utilize Security escorts.
policies, rules & expectations
The Student Handbook contains important information about policies, rules and expectations. Review the Handbook and become familiar with the information. The alcohol, drug and weapons policies are particularly important. Avoid bringing items to campus that are prohibited.
office of community standards LOCATION: Crosby Center, Upper Level PHONE: (509) 313-4009 E-MAIL: ocs@gonzaga.edu WEB: www.gonzaga.edu/ocs
The Office of Community Standards (OCS) provides resources and education about University conduct expectations and administers formative and developmental outcomes within the framework of Gonzaga University’s Jesuit identity and student conduct best practices. This process considers the students’ needs and helps balance those against the needs of the Gonzaga University community. For more information, visit Community Standards online at www.gonzaga.edu/ocs.
stay informed
Preventing crime is a team effort involving all Gonzaga community members. Our goal is to share accurate information in a timely manner with our community regarding crime, crime prevention, campus security and safety issues. Education will help you make good decisions regarding your personal safety and the safety of others.

TRANSPORTATION weekend shuttle
Don’t have a car and want to go downtown with your friends? Gonzaga Student Body Association (GSBA) provides students a free shuttle service that operates on the weekends. The shuttle is a great alternative to having and maintaining a car and gets students to the heart of downtown Spokane. The shuttle departs from and returns to Desmet Circle on a consistent schedule.
rides
CPS&S officers can provide a security escort and courtesy rides to any area on campus, as well as a portion of the immediate neighborhood adjacent to Gonzaga.
bikes
Students are encouraged to bring older, inexpensive bikes to use around campus. We strongly recommend a high quality U-type lock and discourage cable and chain locks. CPS&S sells high quality U-type locks at a discounted price to students. Some residence halls have bike storage – contact your RA or RD as soon as you arrive to arrange access. Record your bike’s serial number and visit the CPS&S Website or office at Welch Hall to register your bike.
parking & permits
First year students may purchase parking permits; however, many students choose not to, as there is not a great need and parking is limited. Student parking permits are $85+tax per year and can be purchased online at www.gonzaga.edu/parking, starting Aug. 15 or at the CPS&S office. Students may want to consider a Zipcar membership if they only plan to use a vehicle occasionally (trips to the grocery store, etc.). Visit www.gonzaga.edu/zipcar for more information.

residence life LOCATION: Crosby Center, Upper Level
E-MAIL: housing@gonzaga.edu
PHONE: (509) 313-4103
WEB: www.gonzaga.edu/residence-life
Living on campus is a HUGE part of the Gonzaga experience. Whichever residence hall you are assigned to, it is one of the best ways to experience the Gonzaga community. In Residence Life, we describe community using four interrelated concepts: Connection, Interaction, Engagement and Reflection. Students who live in University housing will find these “pillars” evident in their hall environment, community events and relationships with each other and the residence life staff.
residence life staff
One of the first people you will meet is your Resident Assistant (RA). These leaders are students who foster and ensure a sense of community and safety among hall residents. Using the four pillars, RAs develop relationships with all residents, coordinate hall events, assist in difficult situations and encourage you to be involved in the Gonzaga experience.
expectations
You are beginning to write the first chapter of your story. The preface was written by your families. The next chapter will be written in the environment of a deep and rich stay at Gonzaga University. Start thinking now about how you want your story to go. Understand the expectations Gonzaga has of students in and out of the classroom. Our expectation is for you to internalize our institutional values throughout your academic life. Many expectations revolve around the use of alcohol, and the policies surrounding visiting others, hosting guests and abiding by noise policies. These are just some of the guiding factors in your GU story.

residence halls
STORAGE
Pay attention to communications from Housing. Room assignments are a complicated process with 3,000 returning and new students in 22 residential communities. Here are some things to watch for:
Storage is limited: bring only the necessities. For instance, will you really ride your bicycle frequently or only a couple times when the weather is nice.
EARLY JULY: Tentative building assignment and other important information (you may have received your assignment already).
Free residence hall laundry rooms are available with both washers and dryers. Just bring your own detergent and laundry supplies.
EARLY AUGUST: Specific information and confirm your housing assignment and roommate.
KITCHENS
roommates
When you receive roommate information in August, say “hello” and don’t be too quick to critique them based on where they are from, what they may have done (or not done) in high school or their Facebook profile. Coordinate with them so you don’t bring duplicate items that are OK to share. The University believes that living in community (including with a roommate) gives students an opportunity to deeply get to know people of differing backgrounds and attitudes. While you may not become best friends with your roommate, navigating living with someone is an important life-skill with benefits beyond college.
LAUNDRY
Some halls have “kitchenettes” that can be used by residents. However, most kitchen supplies are not provided.
BUNK & LOFT KITS
Most beds can be bunked or lofted. Residence Life staff will have the pins necessary, if you wish to bunk. If you want to loft your bed so the space under it is empty, you need to reserve a kit online at www.gonzaga.edu/loftbeds.
PHOTO: The Department of Theatre & Dance encourages people to ‘Dance Everywhere.’
mail services LOCATION: Crosby Center, Lower Level PHONE: (509) 313-5697 WEB: www.gonzaga.edu/mail
The Gonzaga Mailroom provides services that include receiving packages/mail via USPS, FEDEX and UPS as well as the same services as a US Postal sub-station, including receiving certified, insured, priority, express, first class, parcel letters and packages. In addition to receiving and shipping packages, the Mailroom sells mailing and packing materials. The Mailroom will be open during Orientation on Friday, Aug. 28 and Saturday, Aug. 29 from 8 a.m. – 1 p.m. Normally, the Mailroom is closed on weekends during the academic year as well as on all Gonzaga University Holidays. Undergraduate students living on campus MUST have a mailbox (an MSC Box) to receive packages and mail:
Mail cannot be delivered to residence halls or apartments.
There is ABSOLUTELY NO SHARING OF MAILBOXES and this includes “in care of” packages due to security reasons. AVOID LONG LINES – mailbox rental is thru CashNet ONLY. You must pay for MSC Boxes on www.gonzaga.edu/mail-rental BEFORE coming to campus – deadline is Aug. 26 (we will process MSC Box rentals in person starting mid-Sept.).
Share your address with your family & friends:
Packages may be shipped beginning Aug. 1. Once you arrive on campus, come to the Crosby Center with picture ID to pick up your key and any packages.

think
about IT. At Gonzaga, we strive to develop the whole person by cultivating students with strong skills in reflective and critical thought, lifelong learning and ethical discernment. College is often a time of beginning to navigate on your own while being presented with many opportunities, challenges and new experiences. Because of this, you are required to complete the online course “Think About It” prior to coming to campus. This course prepares you for the unique challenges and responsibilities of college life by examining the issues of drug and alcohol use, healthy relationships and sexual violence. You will receive information about how to access this online program in late July via your Zagmail account, and must complete the program prior to coming to campus. If you have questions about “Think About It” or need help, please contact the Center for Cura Personalis at ccp@gonzaga.edu or (509) 313-2227.
