GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
G
onzaga is the oldest educational institution in the old Federal City of Washington, opening its doors to lay students in 1821 as the Washington Seminary, under the charter of Georgetown College and the direction of Father Anthony Kohlmann. The school, within sight of the Capitol and an easy carriage ride from the White house, flourished for several years. On one famous occasion, President John Quincy Adams came to Commencement and examined the boys in Latin and Greek. However, the school had no endowment, and the rules and regulations of the Society of Jesus did not allow the school to charge tuition. Since tuition was necessary to keep the school open, the Jesuits left in 1827. Although the rules against charging tuition were changed just a few years later, the Jesuits did not return until 1848. The Seminary was instantly successful, and the next year, President Zachary Taylor was present at commencement, a sure sign of the school’s good standing. In May 1858, President James Buchanan signed an Act of Congress that changed the name to Gonzaga College and granted the school a Federal charter. Gonzaga was indeed a college, and actually conferred some bachelor’s degrees before phasing out the baccalaureate program by 1900. The school moved to its present location, North Capitol and Eye Street, NW, in 1871, to be near Saint Al’s, which the Jesuits had built in 1859. The school occupied space that had been a former orphanage (this accounts for the strange shape of some of the classrooms). Renamed Kohlmann Hall, this building housed the Jesuit community as well as the high school. The move was nearly disastrous—there were so few people living in the area that enrollment dropped precipitously, leading to real questions about the school’s survival. The neighborhood gradually expanded, with new homes appearing in what had been fields. The number of students applying to Gonzaga increased, and by its 75th anniversary, the school was ready to expand. The campus expanded with the 1896 dedication of Gonzaga College Hall, which today houses the oldest continually operating theatre in Washington, D.C. A magnificent addition, it still preserves all the scene-changing equipment from that era, and is a virtual museum of theatre in its own right. In 1912, Cardinal Gibbons presided over opening ceremonies of the new “Main Building”, now known as Dooley Hall. The façade, matching the theatre, provided a stately image in the busy neighborhood traffic of Eye Street. This began a long period of peace and stability for Gonzaga. The surrounding area became solidly Irish Catholic, bringing prosperity to school and parish alike.
4 • GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
The school’s curriculum was based on the universal Jesuit plan of ratio studiorum, found in every Jesuit school in the world. Emphasizing the classics, the curriculum followed a logical progression of studies. Large numbers of Jesuits taught, and there were few lay teachers. Tuition remained at less that $200 per year until 1956. By the early 1960s Gonzaga’s neighborhood changed and inner city tensions escalated. When Saint Al’s parochial school closed, the building was taken over by Gonzaga and is now Cantwell Hall. When the city erupted in riots in 1968, fires burned all around the campus—but the church and school were spared. Soon after those riots, however, a bleak period followed in which enrollment dropped and the school once again, began to fail. By the early 1970s there were serious discussions around closing Gonzaga, or moving its location to the suburbs. Instead, the Maryland Province of Jesuits declared its total commitment to Gonzaga as a school part of and serving the inner city. Positive steps to save the school soon followed, including the dedication of Buchanan Field, Gonzaga’s first home athletic field in 1974, and the addition of the Carmody gym three years later. The 1980s saw the addition of Forte Hall and incorporating Arupe Hall (the building that house the Academy of Notre Dame) to the campus. Much of this activity and revitalization was directed under the watchful eye of Father Bernard Dooley, Gonzaga’s president for 20 years, who died this past year. His tenure was capped with the magnificent restoration of the Great Church of Saint Aloysius. Today, Gonzaga has its largest student body ever, and is physically as well as financially sound. In recent years, the school has again substantially updated and renovated its campus, which now includes Cantwell and Ruesch Hall, a state-of-the-art academic facility with new science, music and technology centers. Its location, which twice in the past appeared to seriously threaten the school’s continued existence, is one of the primary reasons for its success. Throughout the years, Gonzaga has reaffirmed a deep commitment to Jesuit education, and it has chosen to do so in the heart of the inner city, on a street shared with leaders of business and government, and on a block where it ministers to the least fortunate in society. This commitment to remain in the city, to be in media res, at the heart of things, has enabled Gonzaga students to understand the meaning of being Men for Others. A recent Wall Street Journal editorial referred to the school as “the premier Catholic high school of Washington.” Its excellent academic program and the fervor of its spirit make it a special place indeed. Ad Majorem dei Gloriam.
GONZAGA PROGRAM HISTORY
REMEMBERING COACH DON SMITH
D
on Smith was an instrumental part in building a championship caliber soccer program at Gonzaga. He first arrived on Eye Street in the fall of 1981 to teach history and take over as the Varsity Soccer Coach. During the 1980’s, the Gonzaga Soccer Program continued to grow and the combination of a new coach and a talented group of players created a powerhouse soccer team in the DC Metro area. In 1985, Coach Smith and his family relocated to Vermont but returned to Gonzaga in 1992. For the next 5 years he coached the Freshman and Junior Varsity teams before taking over the Varsity Program again. Don enlisted the help of 2 young assistant coaches – Scott Waller, and his son, Tim Smith, who were teammates at Castleton State College in Vermont. While his assistant coaches formulated the team’s tactical approach, Don served as the main motivator. Beginning in 2002, Gonzaga won 3 consecutive WCAC (Washington
Catholic Athletic Conference) Championships and began a streak of 14 consecutive final appearances. Don held a special place in his heart for all the boys that played for him. He stressed the idea of “playing for your teammates” and the importance of working together as a team. He firmly believed that every time you walked on the field you were not playing for yourself but rather you were representing the entire Gonzaga community. He embodied the concept of thinking and caring for others. Don was more than a coach or teacher, he was also a friend, mentor, and spiritual leader. Don Smith retired from teaching and coaching in 2005 and passed away unexpectedly in the summer of 2006. His spirit, attitude, and drive live on in many of the Gonzaga Soccer traditions that exist today. In his memory, the Gonzaga soccer program honors a special player each year with the “Don Smith Award.”

GONZAGA SOCCER COACHES HEAD VARSITY COACH Scott Waller Coach Waller has been coaching at Gonzaga since 1998, with this being his 11th year as the Head Varsity Coach. Scott was a standout player at Castleton State College in Vermont and earned two Academic All-American Honors, NESCA Senior All-Star, and All-Conference 1st Team selection in his sophomore, junior and senior years. Coach Waller arrived at Gonzaga in 1998 after serving as assistant coach in his hometown of Cooperstown, NY. From 1998 to 2001, he was an Assistant Varsity Coach under Hall of Fame Coach Don Smith. In 2001, he moved to Lexington, VA to coach the girls Varsity and JV teams for 3 years at Rockbridge County High School. He returned to Gonzaga in 2004 to once more be the assistant under Coach Smith and assumed the Varsity Coach role upon Don’s departure from Gonzaga the next year. Coach Waller was honored as The Washington Post All-Met Coach of the Year after leading the Eagles to back-to-back WCAC Championships in 2007. In his first 10 years, Coach Waller’s teams had a string of nine straight WCAC Final appearances, winning five WCAC Championships. In 2014, in its first year eligible, Gonzaga won the DCSAA state championship. Gonzaga’s Varsity team has been a constant in the national spotlight, with the 2009 and 2012 teams both ranked in the top ten in the nation by the Adidas NSCAA coaches’ poll. Scott has coached six Gatorade State Player of the Year recipients and nine 1st team Washington Post All-Met players and has an impressive winning record of 146-42-21, Coach Waller was selected to be one of the Head Coaches for the 2015 Boys High School All–American Game played last December in Cary, NC. Scott resides with his wife Suzy, in the Del Ray area of Alexandria with his three children: Kira (9), Charlie (7) and Naomi (3).
ASSISTANT VARSITY COACH Adrian Oryshkevych Coach Oryshkevych is a 1999 graduate of Gonzaga and was a two year Varsity soccer player under Coach Don Smith. He went on to Fordham University to study history and finished with a B.A./M.A. in 2004. Coach Oryshkevych then spent the next ten years teaching in New York City and Saint Peter’s Prep in Jersey City, NJ. He coached the JV team there for 8 years. He finally returned to Gonzaga in 2014 to teach in the History Department and coach the JV team and now assists Coach Waller on the Varsity squad.

HEAD JUNIOR VARSITY COACH Grant Furnary A 2006 graduate from Gonzaga, Grant was a two year Varsity player for the Eagles. He also was a 4 year player for the Varsity Rugby team. Grant went onto Virginia Tech and excelled on the rugby field for the Hokies. After graduating in 2010 with a degree in Business, Grant returned to Eye St. where he works as the Registrar and teaches in the Math Department. Grant also coaches with the Varsity Rugby team at Gonzaga. He is thrilled to be working with the Junior Varsity Soccer team again.
ASSISTANT JUNIOR VARSITY COACH Eric Van Horn Eric is a 2012 graduate of Gonzaga. He played two years on the Varsity team, captaining the Eagles under coach Scott Waller. Eric attended and graduated from Clemson University with a degree in Marketing. He currently resides in Alexandria, Virginia and is excited to be helping out with the Gonzaga soccer program.
GONZAGA SOCCER COACHES HEAD FRESHMAN COACH Patrick Sullivan Patrick is a graduate of Notre Dame’s Theology graduate program and is happy to be in his third year at Gonzaga. He has played the game for most of his life but spent his high school and college years on the Cross Country and Track and Field teams. It is not surprising, therefore, that his focus as a Gonzaga coach is on fitness and agility. Patrick stayed active in soccer through intramural, club and rec leagues and captained a team through Notre Dame’s highly competitive intramural league and secured a third place finish. All things considered, his ball skills are nothing to marvel at, but his love for the game and passion for coaching are unrivaled. He considers it a true honor to be coaching for the Gonzaga soccer program.
ASSISTANT FRESHMAN COACH Luis Chaffo Luis played soccer for many years in his native Peru. As a typical South American player, he also played intramural and club soccer in his college years. He was part of the soccer coaching program for 4 years at the Schools of the Sacred Heart in San Francisco, California. Luis is a graduate of the San Francisco State University Spanish graduate program and an avid fan of Newcastle United Football Club.
GOALIE COACH Scott Weaver Scott is a 1994 graduate of Chesapeake High School in Pasadena, Maryland and helped his team in 5 successful seasons. In 1999, Scott graduated 2nd in his class from Penn State University with a degree in Structural Engineering and immediately began his career as a bridge engineer. He is currently the Chief Bridge Engineer for the City of Baltimore and drives down to Gonzaga each week to coach our players. He is in his 11th year of coaching at Gonzaga and resides with his wife, Kelly, and their 3 children, Connor, Savannah, and Logan, in Pasadena, MD.

Maddox Boshart
6
A two year varsity defenseman, Maddox was the anchor of the Eagle defensive back line this year. His physical play at center back protected the box, and his crisp passing helped the Eagles move quickly from defense to offense. His ability to step in to stop an advancing player and separate the ball from that player set the tone for a rock-solid back line.
Thomas Keane
Christophe Gerlach
21
Christophe returned to the Eagles after playing Development Academy soccer last year. As the controlling mid-fielder, Christophe orchestrated the offense while being the front line of defense. Known for his great footwork, Christophe could control possession and maneuver through multiple opponents before slipping the ball to an Eagle teammate. He was a key player to the Eagles’ successful year.
1
After sharing starting varsity goalkeeper responsibilities in his sophomore and junior years, Tommy added to his keeper responsibilities as a tri-captain this year. His focus, determination and understanding of the game helped mold the defense into a cohesive unit. Known for his ability to handle penalty kicks, his penalty kick save versus Washington International School in 2014 helped the team advance in the DCSSA tournament and his penalty kick saves helped preserve ties against Georgetown Prep in 2014 and 2015. 12 • GONZAGA COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
Julian Maalouf
12
A two year varsity starter, Julian teamed with Maddox Boshart to create a formidable center back duo. He was skilled at anticipating opponent movements and positioning himself to defend the goal. His accurate passes out of the back led to many Eagle counter-attacks during the season. For set pieces, Julian was a “go to” player who could drive headers into the back of the net.
Francis Griffin
2
Francis excelled during his senior year on varsity. As a talented defender and midfielder, Francis was instrumental in stopping opponent advances and his sharp passing skills led many advances into the offensive third of the field for the Eagles.
Steven Marinaro
17
Steven’s drive to the upper 90 back post was the winning goal in the Eagle’s game against Regis Jesuit High School in the Jesuit Classic. Within the offensive third of the field, Steven was always a dangerous offensive threat. A two year varsity player, Steven found gaps within the opponent defenses and used his speed to create scoring opportunities.
GONZAGA VARSITY SENIORS
Matthew McCann
13
As a three year varsity player, Matthew was one of this year’s tri-captains. As a sophomore, Matthew earned Honorable Mention WCAC honors and was named to the WCAC First Team as a junior. Matthew was a versatile player who could play most positions on the pitch. With speed and strong footwork, Matthew was a sparkplug for the Eagle’s offense this year and a dangerous scorer.
Patrick Sheehy
3
Playing on the varsity team for the second year, Patrick was called upon to protect the right side of the defensive backline. Patrick used his speed to cover large areas of the pitch and would step in to take away the ball from offensive players moving into his area. Patrick overlapped down the right sideline to score a goal against St. Mary’s Ryken.
Reilly McGee
8
After competing with the Gonzaga Cross Country team in 2014, Reilly joined the varsity soccer team this year. Reilly used his cross country training to maintain a high energy level every time he stepped onto the pitch. His enthusiasm for the game always lifted his teammates to higher levels of play.
Ethan Yohannan
Stephen Ricci
16
As a second year varsity player, Steven was an offensive threat who created difficult match-ups for defenders. Steven used his physical presence to maintain possession of the ball and his speed to advance the ball towards the goal. A tenacious player, Steven could be counted on to take the game to Eagle opponents.
0
Ethan was a very accomplished varsity goalkeeper. His hard work and desire shone through in the way he played in games and during practice sessions. Ethan was a team player and was willing to do whatever it took to help make the team successful.

Will Marks
MGR
Following in his brother’s footsteps, Will Marks bought the family’s managerial skills to the Eagle Varsity Soccer program. Will was always present and always willing to help. He identified and executed solutions for the team’s needs, both at Gonzaga practices at Buchannan Field, home games at Long Bridge Park and away games.
VJ Whitehurst

JESUIT CLASSIC TOURNAMENT
T
2015 JESUIT CLASSIC HOSTED BY MARQUETTE UNIVERSITY HS
he end of September marks a tradition of 4 Jesuit High Schools coming together from around the country for a weekend of soccer. Regis from Colorado, Marquette from Milwaukee, Rockhurst from Kansas City, and Gonzaga met for the thirteenth annual tournament in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The Jesuit Classic began in 1997 as a head-to-head match up between Rockhurst and Marquette and was expanded to 4 teams in 2002.
The venue rotates between the 4 schools each year and it is much more than soccer. By traveling to a new school each year, or hosting, the studentathletes get to meet others following the Jesuit tradition. The coaches stay in a hotel but all the boys stay with host families for the weekend. The visiting athletes come to school with their hosts, play soccer for 2 days, and end with a Closing Mass and Dinner for the whole group.
IT IS TRULY A SPECIAL TRADITION!

Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam... ...For the Greater Glory of God
Jake Scanlan ’13
W
(1994–2015)
hen it comes to teammates and friends, Jake Scanlan was the best of them. Anyone who had the privilege of knowing him would tell you that among his innumerable talents and qualities, he was simply “good.” He made people’s days better with his presence alone. Whether it was cracking a joke, offering a smile, or peacefully sounding that perfect whistle he had, you felt happier around him. He was a stellar student, a great athlete, and could excel at anything he put his mind to. His personality and his actions led people on and off the field, and he was a role model to so many without him probably even realizing it. Jake was the epitome of the word selfless. Everything he did was for the well-being of someone else and he never expected anything in return. He was the unsung hero of the 2012 varsity season with his amazing attitude, consistently good play, and intelligence in the game. He was deserving of so much praise, glory, and attention, but he wanted none of it. His humility was admirable. Therefore, it was only fitting that the player who always sacrificed everything for his team stepped up to take the fifth penalty of the 2012 WCAC championship and calmly put it away for the win. Those who knew him were lucky and blessed to have crossed paths with such an amazing person, and he taught all of us how to truly be a Man For Others. —Written by teammate and classmate Ian Harkes, Gonzaga Class of 2013
— In Memoriam —
The Gonzaga community mourns the passing of Dr. John C. Warman ’57, an Eye Street icon for more than fifty years. His loss leaves an enormous hole in the hearts of everyone at Gonzaga and all who knew him. He was a beloved teacher of Latin and Greek; a gifted musician; the musical director of dozens of Gonzaga theater productions; and an esteemed colleague, mentor, and friend. Doc Warman was the embodiment of the Gonzaga spirit. •
Atque in perpetuum frater ave atque vale. And forever, brother, hail and farewell.
