December 26, 2024
Dear Friends,
Welcome to the 30th Annual Purple Puck Tournament. Over three decades, this tournament has grown in size and reputation, and is a favorite milestone of each holiday season for Gonzaga’s hockey teams and families.
This year, you will meet and cheer for talented teams from Maryland, Virginia, Washington DC, Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Montreal, Canada. On behalf of the entire Gonzaga community, welcome – Bienvenue – to all!
Hockey is a game like no other. It requires stamina and strength, skill and agility, a certain amount of grace, and countless hours of practice and dedication. I commend and congratulate our student-athletes for their commitment to this challenging sport. Further, I take this occasion to commend the dedicated parents of these young men for their continued encouragement and great support of their sons and of their commitment to this distinctive sport - not to mention their resilience to spend hours in freezing cold rinks!
This year, once again, a great effort has been made to provide an opportunity for student-athletes and fans alike to support the great game of hockey and model good sportsmanship. Special thanks to Mr. Dan Rogers, to the tournament committee, members of the Gonzaga hockey booster club, generous volunteers, and the many sponsors featured in the following pages whose financial support make The Purple Puck possible.
Finally, to tournament coaches and players, families, friends and fans, whether you have traveled a short distance or a great one, thank you for joining us for the 2024 Purple Puck Tournament! We are glad you are here, and we hope you enjoy the games as well as your time in and around our nation’s capital.
As we gather in this sacred season of Christmas and once again celebrate Christ’s birth, I pray that you, your family and loved ones enjoy a Blessed Christmas and a New Year full of grace.
THE PURPLE PUCK TOURNAMENT
Since 1993, teams from around the country have traveled to Washington, DC for the National Capital Hockey Tournament, affectionately known as the Purple Puck. The holiday season is a wonderful time to visit DC, and generations of high school players have enjoyed sightseeing, making new friends and reconnecting with old ones. It’s a mix of high-level competition, camaraderie and an unparalleled setting that makes the Purple Puck one of the preeminent holiday hockey tournaments on the East Coast.
This year, the Purple Puck has moved across the Potomac River to Springfield, Virginia’s beautiful St. James facility while our beloved home rink, Fort Dupont, is under renovation. While hockey is the main focus, it’s truly the people who come back time and again that make this tournament special. The Purple Puck is run entirely by volunteers, eager to welcome players and families from around the country and show them the hospitality of the nation’s capital region.
On behalf of Gonzaga College High School and our hockey program, we would like to extend our heartfelt thank you to every parent, player, volunteer, and fan who has taken the time to travel and participate this week. Decades of successful tournaments are a testament to the families that make up the larger hockey community. Let’s cheer for all the teams and players, and make it a positive experience and a week to remember. Here’s to carrying this wonderful tradition forward for years to come!
