Project Type : Hospital Expansion Date : March 2015 Location : Chula Vista, San Diego California

The Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center is located in Chula Vista, San Diego, California. The site already the home of an existing part of the hospital, that is partially old and outdated, the purpose of this project is to create a new hospital building that will provide a new entrance to the building, and three new floors of patient rooms, which will have 35 patient rooms in each floor. Each patient floor will have ample nurse station work space. The administrative offices are located next the reception spaces. First floor will have the lobby and dinning space, which will serve the entire hospital.

There are 35 patient rooms are located in the outer wings of the hospital, so they can take full advantage of the views provided by the site. In the interior corridors of the patient floor, all of the nursing stations, administration offices, the patient elevators and conference rooms are within so that the hospital circulation could flow continuously and unobstructed. It is important to create atrium’s within these space to allow natural lighting, for patient and staff comfort. The reduction human errors was an important driving force. The better we can make space comfortable at most times, error happen less.

/ Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center/

Within the patient rooms, the intent was to create a warm, calming space were patients and their families can feel like they are at home. Most of the materials in the room are warm wood looks from the cabinets to the flooring, but materials that are suitable to a hospital environment. There is a television located on the built in for patient comfort. There is also a family space when the family of the patient need to stay over night there is a sofa that turns into a bed.

/ Sharp Chula Vista Medical Center/ There are four nursing stations on each patient floor, so then when a nurse is needed they don’t have to travel long distances, and in an emergency it is crucial for the nurse to get there as soon as possible. The nursing stations have a similar color pallets to continue consistency, but there are bursts of orange to announce that these are nursing stations. It was important to make then stand out when a family member has questions they know where to go.

The western side of the building does not have much of a view because of the adjacent hospital building. So besides the mechanical that site on the roof of the second floor, there is an outdoor rooftop garden, where patients can get out of their rooms without leaving the hospital. This space will as provide a views for the patient rooms facing the west view. And it will create a green space for the existing hospital and its patients and staff.

The residential housing is located on the central axis where the new street is located. The existing landscaping was left as is to help reduce the noise and also to create more privacy within the community. There are seven different type of communities that have the similar function but they all have different architectural style so there is diversity within the homes. There are parks in the center of the community so that residents can meet and congregate and get to enjoy the community.

The residential program is at the central core of the site, where the new bus route will run through the heart of the community, so that people can see that their community is transit oriented. The new street will allow not just for buses traveling along their route, but it will allow for cars and bicycles, because there should be multiple point of access to and from the community. There are 150 new homes in this development, which will add to the 36 residential units in the trolley station proposal. Many of the home are town-homes and row-homes that allow for more homes, but individual community identities to remain.

/ Downtown Tijuana Residences/

Project Type : Mixed - Use Community Date : October 2014 Location : Tijuana, Baja California Mexico

In Tijuana there is a lack of community engagement with the architecture. Too many, Tijuana is a stepping-stone to the United States and in particular San Diego. For those who cant afford the American dream have made Tijuana there home, because there are greater opportunities for wealth in Tijuana then in other parts of the country. Downtown Tijuana in particular is a place where many typologies come together, but with no certain order. As Tijuana continues to grow and expand, we need to explore how the urban fabric of Downtown Tijuana is laid out, and fuse it with housing, and other outlets for people and communities to grow. There is an abundance of mixed industries, and jobs, but there is a lack of places for higher education and learning.

With the park being in the center of the development, and the both the school and library, more people will be prone to walk around their neighborhood. The first floor of the entire project is to support the local economy within the community. The second floor function as the home of the store owners downstairs, a live work environment. The is space left so that if the residents decide to expand their home , then there is that flexibility to do so.
