County administrator pitches in Contributed Report

In her job as Goochland County Administrator, Rebecca Dickson often gets tasked with doing “the heavy lifting.” But on March 21, she took on a different kind of workout when she became a Meals on Wheels delivery volunteer for the day. Dickson joined volunteer Justin Lacey in loading meals into her vehicle to take from door-to-door on a daily route to some of the county’s homebound elderly and disabled citizens. “I’m just excited to participate,” she said before heading to client homes, “and to learn more about how Meals on Wheels helps Goochland citizens.” Dickson was one of several Central Virginia officials

who took part in “Mayors for Meals,” raising public awareness about the plight of hunger among homebound seniors and disabled adults in our community. On her delivery route, Dickson got to meet some of the deserving clients who receive Meals on Wheels’ nutritious daily meals. She contributed to a total that has reached more than 3,000 meals prepared for Goochland County residents in the past nine months. The menu was a well-balanced meal of roast turkey with gravy, green bean casserole, dressing, and pie, with customizations made for specific dietary or medical needs. Along with the meal came a connection and check-in from a friendly volunteer.

Benedictine College Preparatory School Headmaster Jessee Grapes said last week the school will not be able to hold classes in Goochland this year and will stay at its North Sheppard Street location this fall. Until recently, the school had hoped to move its academic campus to the Benedictine Society’s site on River Road in Goochland for the fall semester. Now the move has been postponed until next year. “The plan is to open the doors on Jan.22 [2013] at the Abbey,” said Grapes. The Headmaster said the school would have liked to stick to its original plan to open in the fall of 2012 at the Abbey because further delay costs the school more money. “We have to maintain two facilities,” explained Grapes. The school was granted a Conditional Use Permit by the Goochland Board of Supervisors last Dec. 6, after a public hearing moved to the old high school gymnasium to accommodate the crowd. Concern centered around the sewer and water capacity at the Abbey site, as well as the impact on traffic on River Road. One obstacle standing in the

way of a fall opening is lack of progress in satisfying the Virginia Department of Transportation’s questions about the school’s original Plan of Development (POD), submitted earlier this year. Scott Gagnon, Director of Transportation, Land Use and Planning for VDOT’s Richmond District, said Monday the agency had met with the school’s representatives in February to clarify its questions about Benedictine’s original POD but had not received a revised plan as of yet. The school agreed to pay for turn lanes at the entrance to the Abbey, the design of which is part of the POD which Goochland County and VDOT are waiting for. In January, a group of Goochland citizens filed suit to block the school’s move to the Abbey site. An April 6 hearing in Goochland Circuit Court has been set for the suit, which argues that the Goochland Planning Commission must approve the widening of River Road. David Pendergrast, a retired teacher who lives near the Abbey entrance, called the move to River Road “an ill-conceived plan” and said he has doubts the school can obtain the land needed to construct the turning lanes required by the CUP.

Virginia State Police have arrested Paul E. McKinney, 43, on child pornography charges. He was taken into custody without incident Wednesday evening, March 21, at his Goochland County residence. He is being held without bond at the Henrico County Jail on 17 felony counts of child pornography distribution. Each charge carries a penalty of a maximum of 10 years in prison and a $2,500 fine. The Virginia State Police High-Tech Crimes Division initiated its investigation concerning McKinney in March 2011. Forensic examination of McKinney’s com-

puter revealed that he had been receiving and sharing child pornography from his residence in the 3200 block of River Road West in Goochland County. The investigation remains ongoing at this time and State Police are asking for anyone who might have information concerning this case to please contact Special Agent R.J. Brown at (804) 2217305 or via email at rob.brown@vsp. virginia.gov. “We are interested in knowledge of any other crimes that may have been committed by McKinney,” said Virginia State Police Public Relations Director Corinne Geller. The Northern Virginia-DC Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force assisted with the investigation.

Supervisors hear alternate TCSD ad valorem, utility rate plans Staff Report news@goochlandgazette.com

Goochland supervisors heard alternatives to the Tuckahoe Service District (TCSD) ad valorem tax plan Monday night at a board of supervisors’ budget work session. Deputy County Administrator John Wack outlined the alternate TCSD ad valorem rate plans. Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson made it clear that no decisions would be reached, that the purpose of the workshop was to review some alternatives to the proposed budget. The ad valorem tax is assessed on residents and businesses in the Tuckahoe Creek Service District (TCSD) and is an additional tax to normal county taxes. The debt service

payments on the 2002 VRA bonds will increase $250,000 per year in FY2013 and FY 2014 and will go up even more in FY2015. Ad valorem taxes supporting the TCSD debt are currently projected to be $2.29 million in FY2013. The FY2013 proposed budget presumes an ad valorem rate increase from 31 cents to 34 cents in the tax year 2012. This is a penny less than the previously budgeted 35 cents. The proposed budget assumes a 38 cent ad valorem rate in tax year 2013 and the eliminating on June 30, 2012, of the 3 percent interest from accruing on a $3 million general fund loan from 2009. Wack started with the staff proposal of 34 cents in FY2012, 38 cents in FY2013 and 42 cents in FY2014. Alternative option one was a flat 33 cents for all three years. There would be a negative fis-

cal impact each year, with the county suffering a $435,000 loss in FY2014. Option two had the increase being two cents a year. It would be 31 cents in FY2012, 33 cents in FY2013 and 35 cents in FY2014. It was noted that in all of the scenarios, the growth assumption was a negative two percent in Tax Year 2013 and zero growth in Tax Year 2014. User fees for water and sewer were also discussed. The staff proposed establishing a single rate structure for all customers for their bi-monthly charges. To accomplish this, rates for county customers would go up slightly, or not at all, and rates for customers in the TCSD would be raised to reach the new rate. For customers in the TCSD, the proposed water and sewer charges for using 4,000 gallons a month would increase $14.56. Alternative option one would

John Wack

result in an increase of $12.46 and option two would result in a $10.36 increase. For county customers outside the TCSD, the proposed changes would increase an increased bill for water and sewer of $4.20. Option one would have an increase of $2.10 and there would be no increase in option two. The Board of Supervisors will hold a public hearing on the proposed budget April 3 at 7 p.m. at Goochland High

Dr. Tom Newton, DVM, and a resident of Goochland since 1995, is no stranger to equine owners and has served horse owners in Virginia since 1982. And now Newton has stepped up to the plate to assist with inmate programs at James River Work Center (JRWC). The program connects inmates and horses. “I was contacted by Robin Williams,” Newton explains, “and was invited to sit in along with the Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation and help plan the program.” The program has been in operation for a little over five years. Newton says there are many benefits for all. “Many [inmates] have never had the experience of being around horses. “ Newton said. “The program gives them opportunities of working with animals that are dependent on them,” Newton continued. The

interaction teaches them to patient and kind. We [the staff] hope what they learn will carry over to how they treat people.” Newton has taken care of equines for over three decades. His career was a natural choice for him to follow. “I grew up on a farm in Georgia,” he said, horses have always been a part of my life. He became a vet in 1979. His wife Jennifer is involved in their horse farm “Little Hawk” and in the inmate program. On the farm she uses her attorney skills to handle the management of the horse breeding business and her husband’s veterinary business. In the inmate program her organizational skills are invaluable. Newton accepts no pay for his part in the inmate horse equine program. He teaches the inmates about horses and provides care for the horses in the program. Why for free? “It’s a way to help,” Newton said,” it’s how I can give back. It’s something I can do for others.”

Rhode appointed to ABC Board By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

When then-Delegate Bill Janis, R-Henrico, ran for commonwealth’s attorney in Henrico County, a number of Republicans urged Rhode to drop out of the state Senate race to seek the nomination in the 56th House District. He declined, saying he was focused on winning the Senate nomination. Peter F. Farrell, R-Henrico, won the House seat. As an assistant commonwealth’s attorney in Richmond, Rhode has prosecuted cases ranging from drug distribution to murder, according to the governor’s office. He previously was a Marine Corps infantry officer and was a platoon and company commander.

Gov. Bob McDonnell has appointed Richmond prosecutor Bryan Rhode to the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board, which oversees Virginia’s liquor monopoly. Rhode, whose appointment requires legislative approval, will succeed Wayne Ozmore, who resigned from the three-member board in May of this year. Rhode joins J. Neal Insley, chairman of the board, and Sandra C. Canada. Commission members are paid $122,000 per year. The chairman makes $130,000. Commissioners hear appeals of decisions by ABC hearing officers in cases concerning ABC licenses and other matters. Richmond Times Dispatch The Board’s decisions Staff contributed to this Contributed Photo Bryan Rhode will start as VABC Commissioner on April 10. may be appealed to the local story. Circuit Court and, at the next level, to the Virginia Court of Appeals. “I have enormous respect for Gov. Bob McDonnell,” said Rhode Monday. “I’m thrilled to have the chance to work for him.” Rhode said he will begin work at his new position on April 10. Last year Rhode was one of five candidates who sought the GOP nomination for state Senate in the new 22nd District that stretches from Lynchburg to Goochland County. Thomas A. Garrett Jr. won the August 2011 primary and the general election last November.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

March 29, 2012

www.goochlandgazette.com

Can we be civil? In the last week it seems a few folks have become a little stressed when it comes to posting comments on the Goochland Gazette website. This lack of civility seems to be more common now that the internet has become so widely used for disseminating the news. Stories go up on websites all over the world every second of the day, offering readers the opportunity to comment instantly after they read them. Other comments follow fast and furious and courtesy sometimes flies out the window. The whole process is very unlike the letters to the editor option, which we still heartily encourage, where one sits down and types or writes out a letter on an issue. Just doing this seems to calm folks down a bit. We imagine that writers read over their letter before emailing, faxing (yes we still accept faxes) or actually using the U.S. Mail to transmit their thoughts. We bet there are more than a few rewrites before the correspondent hits send or licks the stamp and puts it in on the envelope and drops their missive off at the Post Office. And for letters to the editor, we require a name and phone number so that we can verify the identity of our correspondents. But for those posting comments on our website, there’s no way to verify identity and therein may lie the problem. Posting anonymously or behind an alias seems to lead to a, shall we say, coarser level of debate, one that sometimes strays from the subject at hand to the personal. Not that we don’t want spirited debate. By all means disagree with a viewpoint. Vigorously. Hold forth and make your best case. Do your best to show a post is wrong through reasoned debate, but may we suggest sticking to the subject. I guess it’s easiest to do this if one starts with the assumption that all of us have our own self-interest at heart and that of our family and community. Then assume that those who disagree with you are also acting in what they perceive as their own self-interest. If we honor all those who have an opinion with the belief that they are honestly speaking their mind and have a right to their opinion even if we strongly disagree we’ll be all right. So may we suggest that posters consider identifying themselves by name when commenting? After all, if one believes what they have to say is worthwhile, shouldn’t they be willing to identify themselves when posting a comment? We think so. - Ken Odor

Delegate Farrell’s revisionist history letter A short time ago I communicated my displeasure with Del Peter Farrell’s votes on HB1 – the personhood bill and SB484 and HB462 regarding forced ultrasounds. He responded by sending me a letter that I assume was meant to alleviate my concerns, but proved only that he’s a typical politician. He began by trying to convince me that the personhood bill had nothing to do with efforts to control birth control, abortion, and aspects of assisted con-

traception, but those who advanced the bill were clear that this was the ultimate intended purpose. To pretend otherwise is duplicitous. Then he launched into a description of the informed consent laws and pointed out that as introduced, the bill would require a transvaginal ultrasound in the event that a transabdominal ultrasound was unable to confirm gestational age of the fetus. As we know, the transvaginal requirement was dropped as outrage erupted over forcing a woman to undergo an invasive procedure against her wishes. He voted yes for both bills but echoes the Governor’s words in his

letter stating “I believe that no person should be directed to undergo an invasive procedure by the state, without their consent, as a precondition for another medical procedure.” He says for that reason he voted for the amendment which removed the requirement for the transvaginal procedure. What he hypocritically failed to mention in his letter to me is that he voted twice for the original bill in its original form WITH the transvaginal procedure included. It appears that he is now trying to distance himself from those votes see Letters > page 7

Letters continued from > page 6 having seen the anger and controversy they spawned. If he really felt that way, why did he vote twice for the bill with the invasive procedure included? While I do not agree with his views on this subject, I would have respected him more if he had just stated flat out that he thinks we need to roll back the clock and outlaw abortion, and give the state control over women’s bodies against their will for their own good. As a Republican, he is supposedly devoted to reducing spending and minimizing governmental intrusion into our lives, but that’s not the case here, as we the taxpayer will help pay for this newly required procedure. To attempt revisionist history is to tell me that he’s just another politician willing to say whatever he has to for personal advancement. I won’t be voting for him again and wish I could recall my original vote and give it to Brett the Wonder Dog who at least would do no harm. Patrick Gannon Maidens

Superintendent’s termination called for Over the past couple of weeks I have been as engaged as most in the “hubbub” regarding the leaking of confidential personnel information by the GCPS Administration in direct conflict with the wishes of the School Board. In fact, I was initially active on the Goochland Gazette message boards in an effort to try to focus attention on the real issue at hand, and that is the lack of leadership from the top of GCPS Administration. From what I understand,

the School Board was attempting to bring some employees into a conversation to find ways to not only improve results but to do it in a better way. Their intent was to do this in an appropriately confidential way to protect those employees. Someone, most likely the Superintendent, took this opportunity from their hands by leaking personal and confidential information to the press, employees, and the public to elicit just the kind of emotional response we experienced. This tactic has been used in the past, and apparently if we expect those in leadership positions to behave ethically and professionally, then we are naïve. Well, for the first time in my life count me amongst the naïve, then. Instead, what I really see is the dysfunctional culture that the School Board is trying to change showing its face in the completely unprofessional and unethical handling of this situation at the top level of the school system. Effective leadership starts and ends with having integrity. It is about vision and change while management is about keeping the status quo. Mr. Odor says we may wish it to be different but we have to accept what is. Any expectation of real change is “naïve” and we should slow down and not make “fundamental” changes. Or we can choose to say that our mediocre results are not acceptable and that this culture is not the way we choose to do things and exert some leadership for a needed fundamental change. I believe this was the reason we elected this School Board in the first place. We can, and should, expect better both in terms of performance AND culture. Our schools should set targets based on what our students will need in order to be competitive and then hold our administration and staff to achieving those goals. Most of all, we need to do this in a professional

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor way, where we treat staff with respect and acknowledge that not all great ideas must originate from the central office. I firmly believe we are not fully using the considerable talents of the teachers and staff in the system. Is it reasonable to expect that someone who has so viciously protected the status quo will suddenly become an agent for change? Any positive and meaningful change needs to start at the top. To be clear, this is not a personal attack. I believe that the current Superintendent is doing what she thinks is best to run the school system. It is simply that her vision for what the schools should be and how they should operate is quite different from that of her bosses, the School Board, and their bosses, the people that elected them. This is an untenable situation and the type of leadership exhibited during this latest debacle by the Superintendent is not only unprofessional and unethical, but simply can’t continue. We need a Superintendent that is committed to carrying out the vision of the School Board while demonstrating the same professional and ethical behavior we expect of the staff, teachers and students of GCPS. I call on the School Board to hold the Superintendent accountable for her egregious behavior and exercise the termination clause in her contract so that we can move on with improving our educational system. I realize that I may be “naïve” in concluding that the boss should be held to the same, or a higher, standard than the rest of the GCPS employees, but I prefer to believe that expectations matter and we should have only the highest expectations for those that run our school system. BUSINESS GUIDE: Local business profiles

Retirement planning crucial for small business owners Planning for retirement is crucial for everyone, and it is especially critical for small business owners, the business leaders many cite as the life blood of the American economy. Indeed, according to the U.S. Small Business Administration, small business owners employ half of all private sector employees, pay 44 percent of total U.S. private payroll, and have generated 65 percent of net new jobs over the past 17 years. The challenge before American small business owners is keeping their companies financially healthy long-term. This is so that small business owners do not over-rely on the sale of their business alone to take care of them in retirement, and so the business will continue to remain a viable employer in the communities it serves. Because small business owners and entrepreneurs are busy every day working to keep their businesses running strong, their schedule can often interfere with planning for the future. But in this economy, planning is a must in any business strategy. Without it, business owners may be surprised to fi nd that the ultimate sale of their business may not leave enough for them to live on. This is because the sale timing might be off, or their finances are not strong enough to cover a full retirement. “Setting a target number - or dollar figure of what is needed to live on for the rest of your life - is important, and it should be determined at least 10 years before you’re ready to retire,” says Tara Reynolds, corporate vice president with Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company (MassMutual). “And as you approach retirement, it’s also a good idea to re-calculate what the business is worth with a proper business valuation to determine how you will need to fund your non-working years, if the value has changed. Having this plan and expectation in place can help you determine the best way and time to retire from your business.” The average business owner expects to retire at age 68, according to a survey conducted by GfK Custom Research North American for MassMutual in 2011. Yet only one-third of the respondents had a sound retirement strategy to ensure income for life, having access to income when needed, managing potential health care expenses and leaving a legacy to the next generation. eigh Degen of Kansas City offers the following tips to help small business owners stay financially secure during the run up to retirement.

Anticipate needs Traditionally, most people need about 70 percent of their current annual income to live comfortably in retirement. Know what your business is worth - both as one entity, and also broken down into smaller parts. Only about 10 percent of business sales involve the entire business as one lump sum.

Save on the side You’ve probably heard about diversifying your portfolio, and the same is true with diversifying your retirement plan. Put aside 20 to 25 percent of your gross income in savings outside of the business. This provides you with flexibility as you plan your exit from the business. For example, if you have an heir or employee interested in purchasing the company, they might not be able to afford it all at once, but could take over the helm with smaller payments over a period of time. Having additional savings can help you tide over in retirement while you also receive payments for the business.

Explore options

Planning for retirement is so crucial, and owning a business can often add complications in timing the retirement perfectly. “Business owners put so much hard work into building the business and making it strong and viable in the market,” says De-

As you near retirement, selling off your business in one setting would make everything easy. But as mentioned earlier, it doesn’t always work that way. Knowing your business’ value can help you evaluate offers that come your way, so you can make an educated decision on whether to sell and live comfortably in retirement, or keep working and pursue a better offer.

Management/Owners:

Don’t wait too long to find a buyer Within three to five years of retirement, business owners should start to fi nd a buyer for the business. Of course, this plan demands that the owner set an expected retirement date and stick to it. By waiting too long, owners may begin to experience poor health and low energy, which could affect productivity and potentially the profitability of the company.

gen. “With additional planning in retirement strategy, a good business owner can retire and see the business continue to succeed even after it has been transitioned over to new owners.” –ARA

Local letters shed new light on Civil War Contributed Report

A special meeting of the Goochland Historical Society was held on March 12 at Byrd Church to mark the publication of the latest edition of its journal, which showcases little known letters from the front lines of the Civil War. Written by William Callis Kean, whose family tree includes many prominent names in Goochland

history, to his niece, Susan Kean Boston, the letters provide an intimate look at the war through the eyes of one soldier. Kean survived the war and lived out his life at Oakley near Dogtown Road. He is buried in the cemetery at Byrd Church. Dr. Bruce Venter of Goochland, GHS vice president and renowned historian, said that the letters offer new insights into the conflict.

Venter’s detailed annotation of the letters gives great depth to the information provided by Kean’s communications. For instance, Kean comments on the mail system whereby Confederate soldiers could send letters from the field without postage, which would be paid by the addressee. He also tells his niece about his experiences in battle and army life between engagements. He shares observations about strategy, generals and units form other states, including the fearsome Louisiana Tigers and their colorful Zouave uniforms. The article includes pictures of Kean and Susan as well as photos of generals and weapons mentioned in the letters. Copies are available for $10

Va. agricultural exports reached record high in 2011 Contributed Report

Gov. Bob McDonnell announced on March 13 that the commonwealth exported a record $2.35 billion in agricultural products in 2011, an increase of more than 6 percent from 2010 and more than 2 percent from 2009. McDonnell spoke during the opening lunch at the Governor’s Conference on Agricultural Trade. “Agriculture and forestry are vitally important to economic growth in Virginia,” he said. “With more than onequarter of farm cash receipts attributable to export sales, continuing to grow Virginia’s agribusiness exports is a priority for my administration. … Exports are key factors in

keeping our economy moving forward, and they support jobs, from our farms to our outstanding air, land and sea ports.” Virginia’s strong position in the global marketplace is due in part to its diversified portfolio of products and export markets. Top export products in 2011 included soybeans; poultry; wheat; pork; lumber and wood products; corn; animal feed; leaf tobacco; fats and oils; cotton; marine and aquaculture products; fresh vegetables; raw peanuts; hides and skins; processed foods and beverages, including wine. Virginia’s top three ag export markets in 2011 were Morocco, with exports totaling more than $360 million

in 2011; China, which saw its exports from Virginia grow to $304 million; and Canada, with exports of $220 million. Virginia’s other top export markets include Switzerland, $149 million; Egypt, $139 million; Tunisia, $66 million; Cuba, $65 million; Venezuela, $60 million; Indonesia, $57 million; Taiwan, $56 million; Vietnam, $52 million; Saudi Arabia, $52 million; Hong Kong, $47 million; Jamaica, $47 million; Japan, $41 million; Ireland, $39, million; Turkey, $38 million; Brazil, $37 million; Mexico, $36 million; and the United Kingdom, $31 million. The commonwealth’s farmers “are pleased to see that they set a record with

agricultural exports in 2011,” said Tony Banks, commodity marketing specialist for Virginia Farm Bureau Federation. “It is a significant milestone for the industry, but it shouldn’t be a surprise. The global demand for food and fiber is growing every year, and the fact that Virginia producers are able to meet both domestic and global demand for food illustrates the productivity and efficiency of our farmers.” The Gover nor’s Conference on Agricultural Trade was co-hosted by Farm Bureau, the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services, the Virginia Port Authority and Virginia Tech.

Sadler helps launch NASCAR exhibit at CMoR The Children’s Museum of Richmond pays tribute to Virginia’s racing heritage By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

Last Wednesday the Children’s Museum of Richmond and Richmond International Raceway joined forces in an effort to pay tribute to the history of NASCAR racing in Virginia while at the same time building the future of the sport. With the help of Emporia native Elliott Sadler, RIR and CMoR announced their plans to create an 800-square-foot exhibit that will be put on display at the Children’s Museum to educate and develop interest in NASCAR among its youngest fans. “We talk a lot in our sport; based on some recent studies that NASCAR did; about cultivating the next generation of race fan,” said RIR President Dennis Bickmeier. “We think this is a great way to do that. It’s a great way to educate

At left: Emporia’s Elliott Sadler and his son Wyatt look over a display at the Children’s Museum of Richmond highlighting the NASCAR driver’s career. young people and educate families about our sport.” As the 15th most visited children’s museum in the country, CMoR is a prime location to create the tie between the top local sport in a fun, yet educational way. “You’ll see that children are having a good time but what we know is they’re actually learning,” said CMoR President/ CEO Karen Coltrane. “That’s the way we all learn is through play and having fun and I don’t think there’s anything more fun in town than the Children’s Museum.” The exhibit, co-funded by The NASCAR Foundation and RIR Cares, will include four displays and eventually travel around the Richmond area to each of the three CMoR locations, downtown, Short Pump and Chesterfield. The exhibit will be completed by late August, just in time to attract NASCAR fans who are visiting Richmond for RIR’s “Last Race to Make the Chase” in September.

The first portion of the exhibit will be entitled ‘When they were young’ and pays tribute to Virginians who have made it big in NASCAR. Sadler will be part of the display. “That’s pretty cool to be featured in the exhibit,” Sadler said. “I’m just a small town kid from Emporia, Virginia… to be a part of an exhibit is unreal. I’m honored. I’m floored and blown away and definitely blessed to be a part of this exhibit. “I never dreamed I’d ever be part of any museum piece,” Sadler said. “But it’s neat how the state of Virginia really supports their drivers…It’s neat for them to let us be involved in this. It’s very special to all of us that grew up fans of the sport first.” Other drivers represented at the unveiling were Chesterfield’s Denny Hamlin along with Jeff, Ward and Jeb Burton. “It’s going to be very special for our young people to

learn about these drivers and how they got started and how they got developed in their career to get where they are today,” Bickmeier said. There are also plans to have a stock car on display that visitors can climb inside to get a real feel of what it is like to be a driver. The exhibit will also include two interactive piecesa flag stand that will both teach visitors the meaning behind NASCAR’s colored flags and allow them to wave the flags from a stand. There will also be a Build a Car & Race Track where visitors can assemble their own cars to race on four different tracks. “I can’t wait to bring my son and check out the cars,” Sadler said. “He definitely gets that from his father as well.” For Sadler, the exhibit represents an important part of keeping NASCAR alive. “Kids are our future,” he said. “You’ve got to have the kids involved in the sport early and they can come here and learn more

about it…We want them to be a part of the NASCAR sport in any way they can, whether that’s sitting in the stands being a fan or whether that’s being a part of the sport. “We’ve got some great race tracks in this area where they can go and be a part of the sport and be crew members, race car drivers or whatever they want to be.” Sadler knows, from his own development, how important it is to get started young, as he did racing in Hanover County nearly three decades ago. “I used to go there all the time. It was called Hanover at the time,” he said of the track that is now Capital City Speedway in Ashland. “I used to go there and Amelia growing up when I was like seven years old.” But Sadler said his love of racing, and the love of every driver started before they ever climbed into a car. “I grew up as a fan first,” Sadler said. “I was a kid first coming to the track trying to learn as much as I could about the sport

from a fan’s perspective. “The first time I ever came to Richmond International Raceway I wasn’t even a year old yet,” Sadler said. “I was there the day when Richard Petty was there and sat on the bulldozer and knocked down the wall that made it from a ½ mile track into a ¾ mile track. “I feel like our family has grown along with Richmond International Raceway,” Sadler said. “It’s only fitting that we’re here today to be a part of this exhibit.” Likewise, family has always been the key for the sport of NASCAR. “Our sport was built on families; again, Sadler, Burtons, the Wood Brothers,” Bickmeier said. “Our sport was built on that and the traditions and generations coming to the race track. We hope to see more of that coming back to Richmond International Raceway or continuing on, but using this (exhibit) as a springboard to getting kids excited about racing.”

Last Thursday, the Goochland softball team faced and overcame the first big test in their return to the James River District by downing defending JRD champion Central 4-1. The Bulldogs (4-0, 1-0 JRD) were solid across the board both on offense and defense to defeat a Charger (1-2, 0-1) team that returned the core of its talent from a season ago. “It was a good defensive game and we got the runs when we needed to,” said Goochland head coach Amy Henneberger. Because of district changes, it’s been a while since Goochland and Central played one another but Chargers coach Tammy Matthews knew what her team would face in the contest. “It’s been a couple years,” she said. “They’re always well put together. Very strong usually.” For much of the game it was a youthful pitcher’s duel between Goochland’s lefty standout, freshman Jackie Tremain and Central’s 6-1 sophomore Nelda Bagley. Tremain gave up one hit and notched six strikeouts while Bagley struck out eight in the losing cause. While Bagley relied on speed

Central Lunenburg short stop K. Matthews tries to escape the dust as Goochland’s Kiersten McCray, right, signals for time after stealing second. and strength, Tremain turned in an exceptional performance with her junk pitches. “It was working on the batters,” Henneberger said. “It was getting it to our fielders and our fielders were making the plays. That’s all we need.” Matthews concurred. “(Tremain) did well varying her speed,” she said “She is definitely not the hardest throwing pitcher we’ve seen but adjusts her speeds well, which catches us off guard. We’re extended

out thinking she’s going to throw something she doesn’t throw.” As impressive as Tremain was, the rest of the Bulldog defense stood out to Matthews. “Solid; it didn’t matter where we hit it,” she said. “We didn’t hit the ball hard anywhere, but it didn’t matter where you hit it, they were going to make a play on it.” The Bulldogs picked up the first hit of the game in the bottom of the first when Chakiryn Jackson (2-for-3, 2 RBI) beat the throw to first after a shot to short. But Jackson was left stranded. After going three-and-out in their first two at-bats, the Chargers started off big in the top of the third. S. Parsons led off with a deep double to right center then stole third. A ground out to first by K. Horner was all it took to get her home for a 1-0 Central lead. But the Bulldogs answered big in the bottom of the inning.

With one out, Taylor Scruggs singled through the gap at first. Next up, Jesse Leroy sent a shot to third, but both Bulldogs were safe because no Central defender covered second. The Chargers quickly paid for the mistake. Jordan Fleming came to the plate and drilled a shot through the gap into right to drive in Scruggs and tie the game 1-1. Jackson then picked up her second hit of the day by finding the gap at third. Leroy scored easily and Fleming was safe at the plate when the ball came out of the glove of Central catcher A. Rose. An RBI sacrifice to right from Brandi Tester drove Jackson in from third for a 4-1 Bulldog lead. “Goochland hit the ball, that one inning in the holes every time they hit,” Matthews said. As well as the Bulldogs hit the ball, Hennberger would like to see them get started earlier

in the game. “We wait a couple innings to jump on the pitchers,” she said. “I guess it takes one or two times seeing them to feel comfortable hitting.” Goochland had a chance to add to their lead in the bottom of the sixth. Kiersten McCray, came on as a pinch runner after Tester was hit by a pitch. McCray stole second then reached third when Tremain drilled a line drive to the pitcher. McCray tried to score off Ericka Spencer’s shot to Bagley but she was tagged out at the plate. The Bulldogs face a test in scheduling this week with three games in four days. Goochland hosted Bluestone on Tuesday then they are home for Nottoway and Louisa in Thursday, Friday contests. Henneberger is pleased with the start to the season but the Bulldogs know they still have a long road ahead. “Starting out 4-0 it’s awesome,” she said. “The girls set a goal of being undefeated and being

district champions.” C. Lunenbrg......... 001 000 0 — 1 1 1 Goochland........... 004 000 x — 4 6 1 Bagley and Matthews; Tremain and Tester.
