Tim Kaine brings his campaign to Goochland Stresses education, bipartisanship By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

An abandoned home on County Line Road burns last year, when warm temperatures and gusty winds spawned brush fires around the state in February.

Democrat candidate for U.S. Senate Tim Kaine made a stop in Goochland County Friday, drawing about 60 people to a “meet and greet” at the White Hawk Music Café. He will likely face former Senator George Allen in the fall contest for the seat of retiring Democrat Jim Webb. Both Kaine and Allen are former Virginia governors, Allen from 1994 to

1998 and Kaine from 2006 to 2010. Kaine was unopposed for the Democratic nomination, while Allen faces a primary challenge from three other GOP hopefuls. Kaine said dysfunction in Washington was what prompted his decision to run, lamenting the “the inability to make hard decisions” in the nation’s capital. “I don’t have a hard time making decisions,” said Kaine, who listed three failures of the Senate: failure to pass a budget, inability of the parties to work together and the failure to confirmnansee Caine > page 9

High risk for dangerous fires has Goochland chief concerned By Becky Robinette Wright news@goochlandgazette.com

Spring fire season is in full force and Goochland Fire Chief Bill MacKay is keeping a watchful eye out for citizens. April fires are raging across the Commonwealth of Virginia with about 20,000 acres burned as of April 13. So far, Goochland County has been spared major brush fires this month. Last week several minor fires broke out but were contained. Sunday a fire burned two acres on Lowrey Road, said Goochland Fire

Chief Bill MacKay but Goochland firefighters and Virginia Forestry quickly doused it. “We were very lucky,” said MacKay. “I am concerned going into the weekend and next week is the potential for lightning,” he said . The National Weather Service declared several days last week as Red Flag Warning days with dry conditions, high winds and plenty of fuel on the forest floors that could burn. The threat of fires is particularly severe this year because of recent weather conditions.

Can social media help your business? Goochland Chamber of Commerce is betting it can By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

The Goochland Chamber of Commerce will help local businesses figure out how to use all the new ways to connect to customers at its “Social Media Workshop,” the first of a series of workshops in its “Business Boot Camp,” said Executive Director Bonnie Creasy last week. The Goochland Chamber is partnering with the Community College Workforce Alliance (CCWA) to present a two-week, four-class session on social media starting April 26 at the Goochland Campus of J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College.

Fire risk continued from > page 1 “When you combine the effects of the 2011 tornadoes and Hurricane Irene with the relatively mild and dry winter, it adds up to a potentially dangerous spring wildfire season,” Governor Bob McDonnell said. “That’s a life safety issue which could affect thousands of Virginians.” Along with Red Flag Warning Days, a spring Burn Ban law was declared for the entire state. Virginia Forestry Officials say that the Commonwealth’s 4 p.m. Burning Law goes into effect on Feb. 15, the first day of spring fire season in Virginia and is active until April 30. This law prohibits burning before 4 p.m. each day if the fire is in, or within 300 feet

“Our Membership Value Committee chaired by Donna Alexander felt it was important to offer this opportunity to strengthen skills and gain more visibility for the businesses,” said Creasy. Technology strategist and new media advocate Nhat Pham will teach the class, which will focus on using a variety of social media outlets (Twitter, Face book, Linkedin and others) to help businesses make the best use of new media. “We know there are a lot of folks out there who don’t know how to use it,” said Creasy. To register for the class, contact Debbie Hines at CCWA, 804 440-1526 or by email at dhines@ ccwa.vccs.edu. Or contact Bonnie Creasy at the Goochland Chamber at 804 556-3811 or by email at director@goochlandchamber. org. Other upcoming chamber of woodland, brush land or fields containing dry grass or other flammable materials. A violation of this law is a Class 3 misdemeanor punishable by up to a $500 fine. In addition to the criminal violation, those who allow a fire to escape are liable for the cost of extinguishing the fire as well as any damage caused to other’s property. Chief MacKay is quick to assure citizens if fire breaks out in Goochland the crews are ready. Each station has an engine, a water tanker and a brush truck, explained MacKay. “We carry our own water. The engine and tanker together hold about 2,850 gallons of water. When responding we send three companies (members of a station and the fire vehicles) so that would be over 8,400 gallons of water with us.”

activities include “Women in Business,” a networking opportunity scheduled for April 24 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at St. Francis Church. That same evening Tuckahoe Physical Therapy will host “Business After Hours” at its

Broad View Shopping Center location from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. Next month a big event is the Rassawek Heritage Show and Wine Festival, scheduled for May 19 and 20. For tickets and information contact them at rassawek.com.

In 2011 a large brush fire in Goochland spanned around 300 acres. MacKay said that multiple jurisdictions from nearby counties responded to the county for mutual aid. Although the chief said the area was fairly quiet during the Red Flag Warnings, there were a few brush fires before the warnings. “We (the county) had one 10-acre brush fire and one 8-acre brush fire,” MacKay said. County firefighters may also be deployed to other areas in the state to assist with fires. “Virginia is a member of the Southern Area Forest Fire Compact,” said John Miller of VDOF Director of Resource Protectioninapressrelease,“which helps facilitate wildfire resources across the 13 Southern states; the Mid-Atlantic Fire Compact (NJ,MD,PA,OH,DE,WV and VA), and the National Interagency

Fire Center in Boise,ID. So when ‘the call’ comes in, we’re able to quickly mobilize forces and respond.” State Forester Carl Garrison explains in a Department of Forestry press release,” Virginia uses the tiered approach to providing assistance. Our first priority is to the citizens of the Commonwealth. We then support the Southern and MidAtlantic compacts followed by response to calls outside of those regions. “Goochland firefighters have already been surveyed to see who could be deployed should the need arise,” said Mackay. What should county residents do in this dangerous fire season? Call Fire/EMS, no matter how small the fire is. “Don’t try to do it yourself,” MacKay, “Call us regardless of how small the fire is.”

Hadensville Company 6 Classic Car Show is this weekend By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

When Marvin Duke passed away his son Glenn Duke wanted to do something in memory of his father. Since Marvin was a founding member of Hadensville Volunteer Fire Department, Glenn decided to start a classic car show in his memory, explained Company 6 member Kelly Woods last week. “It’s the major fundraiser for the company,” explained Woods, with most of the funds going to the building fund. Glenn passed away this past January and the annual car show, now in its sixth year, has been dedicated to Glen and his cousin Kendall. This year the Glenn and Kendall Duke Memorial 2012 Spring Car & Truck Show will take place April 21 at the Goochland Drive-In Theater see Car show > page 11

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

April 19, 2012

www.goochlandgazette.com

The Chalkboard Guest editorial from the Goochland School Board The first quarter of 2012 has been a busy one for Goochland County Public Schools. The entirely new School Board immediately faced a compressed and challenging budget season. Submitting a balanced budget for the first time in several years (two months into the job) wasn’t easy and didn’t come without many difficult decisions. The Board of Supervisors is slated to vote on the County’s budget on April 17, which (if approved) will appropriate additional funds to the schools to be used for compensation. These additional funds give us the opportunity to provide additional compensation to GCPS employees – most likely in the form of a one-time bonus. To say that the last few months have been eventful would be an understatement. In addition to a challenging budget process and difficult personnel changes, the School Board is pushing forward with a number of changes. We are committed to establishing protocol and processes that promote professionalism, accountability, and transparency in the governance, leadership and daily operations of the schools. Our vision for your school system is to create a supportive and collaborative culture that challenges and empowers all of our staff – including principals, teachers, and instructional aides. We expect our employees to work every day to build and sustain a challenging and creative culture that nurtures our children and prepares them to thrive in a world that will continue to change at an increasingly rapid pace. Within the organization we seek to foster an open and honest environment that enables anyone to speak their mind without fear of repercussions. It is about creating a culture of leadership that exemplifies professionalism and accountability at all levels - a culture of mutual respect. Change, even good change, is hard. It fosters uncertainty. One thing that is certain, however, is the passion of this community around the schools. Other than the many talented teachers and staff of GCPS, the most valuable asset we have is the community – an asset that has not been fully leveraged. We are recruiting interested members of the community to participate on a number of sub-committees to assist the schools – community advisory, grants-writing, facilities, activities, academics, closing the achievement gap, transportation, etc. We are also looking to establish some ad hoc committees for special projects, i.e. reviewing the EEI (energy savings) proposal. Please contact any School Board member with your questions, concerns or suggestions. These are your tax dollars and your schools, and your input is extremely important to the success of our public school system. Our contact information is available on the GCPS website, or simply call the Central Office at (804) 556-5316 for more information.

Thanks for acts of kindness

Bellview Gardens case will define BOS position

We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for so many acts of kindness during the passing of our Dad, David Johnson. We really appreciate all of the cards, calls and food. The kind folks at Norman’s Funeral Home as well as those at Greenwood Memorial Gardens were very patient and helpful. Thanks again.

Bellview Gardens’ Neighborhood is under attack again. This rezoning case will define this mostly new Board of Supervisors’ position on whether or not they support the targeting of our residentially zoned neighborhoods for cheap commercial land grabs. Residential land costs a fraction of what commercial land costs. If developers are allowed to set a precedent of seeing residentially zoned land inside of neighborhoods rezoned to commercial, Connie Thurston, Bonnie Nuckols, then a flood of development threatens Carolyn Barker, James “Buster” to flow through our county’s neighborJohnson and families hoods. Goochland Goochland is facing a debt crisis, but

that does not mean that we need to strip our county of its integrity. The beautiful, relaxing, rural nature of Goochland is its greatest asset. We must plan our land use with great care at this juncture to ensure that we protect the Goochland brand. We are opening our brewery in Goochland because of the Goochland brand. Goochland conveys the honor and history of rural America. Its rolling hills, creeks and pastures are valuable. Its open space is priceless. Protecting the Chesapeake Watershed, which runs behind the four Bellview Garden lots in question is also priceless. Goochland is beautiful and offers a location where people will come and invest because it offers a true connection with nature, a see Letters > page 7

April 19, 2012

Letters continued from > page 6 sense of calm, and a feeling of true community. Unwise development is not the answer. Goochland can climb out of its immediate economic hardship wisely with carefully planned development. Promoting our rural, open space and family friendly community will make Goochland inviting to the public and, thus businesses will follow. There is tremendous economic opportunity in our county’s beauty. People flock to open, beautiful, well managed places with interesting agribusiness and outdoor activities; just look at Asheville, North Carolina, Boulder, Colorado, or Nelson County, Virginia. The preservation and improvement of the Goochland brand will build value in our community and will draw in successful economic enterprises and investors that will sustain long term success for the Goochland. We can promote economic growth and commercial development through wise planning. A panic provoked fire sale of our Goochland lands to commercial developers is not the solution for the long term successful economic future of Goochland County. Don’t let anyone tell you that Goochland has no value. It is one of the most beautiful counties in Virginia and it is our home. Please ask the Board of Supervisors and the Planning Commission to say “No to the predation of our county’s neighborhoods. Lisa Pumprey Bellview Gardens

Unhappy with road repair in Goochland Recent letters have high-

lighted the state of the some of the county roads in the far west end both in terms of the unsightly, non-professional and probably unsafe application of what appears to be left-over road material disposed of by VDOT. What is the culture of both VDOT and the county that have allowed this to occur without proper redress? Where is our District Supervisor on this issue? The random application of road material is bad enough but as was also pointed out , the presence of detour signs signifying nothing can only lead to people eventually ignoring them when there is a real danger. People complain often times without effect. Several decades ago, the Gazette ran a front page picture of local Cub Scouts surrounding an ancient, more than 300 year-old oak tree on our property . The tree was about 20 feet in circumference at the time. Years later VDOT removed the tree , which was very much alive, damaged the road (evidence of both are still present) and lied to us about getting our permission to cut down this tree. We sued VDOT, not that the tree could be replaced or the money would even cover the legal fees but to try and hold them responsible. VDOT provided a financial settlement for their actions. Though the VDOT individuals involved then are probably long gone, it appears that the culture of disregard, at least at this end of the county continues. I doubt that legal action for their shoddy application of left over road material or the presence of detour signs of unknown purpose will occur, until something bad happens. It is more than just unsightly, poor use of our tax dollars but also reflects the continued failure of the

I would like to comment after reading the information concerning the topic of discussion in the Thursday, April 5, 2012 edition of the Goochland Gazette on the ‘Town Hall Meeting’, ‘What we need’ and a letter to the editor on Fair cost distribution advocated. Honestly, I don’t think it is fairly advocated – I live in District 4, but was unable to attend last week’s meeting. This was originally a concern of mine initially when a Supervisor was elected to represent this District that lives in an area that is more of a subdivision nature and not of the rural nature indicative of Goochland County. OPINION: Letters to the Editor utilize certainly is not fair. Those of us that reside outside of these new subdivisions, within these districts that are connected to the TCSD, pay for the installation of

our own well and septic system and for the use of that system which includes all of its maintenance. The county provides us with no water or sewer or any maintenance of our systems should they not work or need repair. If they are not functioning, we cannot call the county for assistance. The cost of maintaining our system is out of our own pocket. Those of us that do not live in the TCSD area and use these facilities should not be forced to pay for something that we have no access to use. Those that use and rely on these facilities should be the ones that pay for them. It is only fair that the homeowners of the TCSD pay for the luxury of the water and sewer infrastructure unless the county would like to provide water and sewer facilities that all of us could have the opportunity to utilize fairly or be provided the same option to participate in having water and sewer provided for us at a fee. Many of us that live in the rural outlying areas of Goochland County and in District 4 plan and budget for our families as best as we can and are struggling in this very unfortunate econom-

Those that live in the TCSD purchased the homes in this area knowing full well what was involved in the purchase of their home including what was provided, that being the use of water and sewer. Those of the TCSD utilize these facilities in their daily lives and functions, we do not. Many of those that reside in these new luxurious homes travel into neighboring Henrico to spend their revenue there not in Goochland. I am not even sure if all the residents of the TCSD are aware of the amenities located in the township of Goochland or even venture to shop or dine there at all. I agree, as long as this is an area of contention that it is a deterrent for businesses that may be seeking to locate within Goochland County and it does add negatively to the county growth and this alone increases the burden on the TCSD. Increasing taxes at this time to support something that we do not and cannot use is unfair to those of us that have to pay for our own maintenance systems. What benefit is it to us when we do not utilize these services, that the homes in the TCSD do? When

storms and inclement weather prevails and we lose our power, we are the ones that suffer without water and sewer until repairs are made, sometimes hours or days, this is not an occurrence that those of the TCSD endure. If they lose their electricity they only have to endure the loss of the electricity while we lose our water and toiletry facilities as well. During these times they maintain the luxury of these facilities without having to fill tubs of water to use to flush toilets. They also have the luxury of high speed internet that we do not have. The rest of us are still struggling with having to use dial-up, Hughes Net or a MiFi and even the use of these facilities are intermittent. Granted we live where we do and deal with the inconveniences because we love the rural nature, and that includes well and septic and no high speed internet capabilities. Those of the TCSD decided to live there because of the amenities, we should not be forced to pay for the benefit that the TCSD residents chose to have. D. Fahrner Crozier

director for the Medicare and Medicaid programs for the last six years. Kaine laid the blame for inaction largely at the feet of the Republicans, who he said had one goal, the defeat of President Barack Obama in November. Kaine was an early supporter of President Barack Obama and Chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2009 to 2011. But he promised a bi-partisan approach if elected, saying he would concentrate on developing the nation’s talent pool. “I believe I can go to into the Senate as a proud Democrat but reach out to find common ground,” he said. “My passion is talent,” said Kaine, who said he would champion education programs from K through 12, college and career and technical education. “What I hope to do if I go into the Senate is work on talent issues,” said Kaine, while criticizing the state legislature.

said Kaine. “I think talent and brainpower is the key to economic success, not another barrel of oil.” Kaine, in response to another question, said he supported the Affordable Health Care Act and expected the Supreme Court to uphold it. In a brief interview with the Gazette after the meeting Kaine said Congress should not be spending so much time on the so called “Buffett Rule,” a plan to raise taxes on millionaires but should concentrate on the looming expiration of the Bush tax cuts. “I don’t think they should just wait until year’s end and just try to patch it together then.” Kaine said he favored allowing cuts for those making more than $500,000 to expire. On high gas prices, Kaine said he believed that “speculation by people not in the industry is driving price volatility.” Kaine defended his decision as governor to close 19 rest stops in 2010, two in Goochland County, saying the state had more rest stops than it needed and that the money

“Look at the General Assembly, they’re babbling about how much money they’re going to cut out of education,” said Kaine. Kaine also said he was committed to programs to employ veterans leaving the service. “I went to too many funerals,” Kaine said of his time as governor, adding that his oldest son was about to become a commissioned officer in the U.S. Marine Corps. Kaine called the race with his presumptive opponent George Allen very close, “basically a dead heat,” but said he wasn’t worried. “The good news is I don’t mind close,” he said. “In a contested race I have never gotten more than 53 percent of the vote.” In a question and answer session, Kaine was asked to list the differences between himself and Allen. “He [Allen] thinks the most important thing we can do for the economy is drill more. I think brainpower is the most important resource, not oil,”

Partnership with Williams Mullen Law Firm provides legal services to seniors Contributed Report

Many older adults need help to address legal needs. In response, Senior Connections, The Capital Area Agency on Aging and Williams Mullen are joining forces for a fifth year to provide Life Planning Documents – Wills, Durable Powers of Attorney and Advance Medical Directives. Senior Law Day is a service offered at no cost and open to older adults and persons with disabilities. Confidential legal assistance is provided by attorneys who generously volun-

teer their time. All documents are prepared and finalized on Senior Law Day and those assisted leave with their “legal papers” in hand. The 2012 Senior Law Day will be held on Wednesday, May 9th from 9-3 p.m. “The first step towards planning for the future involves having family discussions about future wishes. This is an opportunity for families to discuss legal options including wills, powers of attorney and health care documents. It is helpful for families to have these docu-

ments before there is a crisis situation. Senior Law Day is a preventive service. We applaud the services that Williams Mullen offers to our senior community,” said Thelma Bland Watson, Executive Director for Senior Connections, CAAA. Interested individuals should contact Mrs. Patricia Giesen at 343-3059 before April 27 to confirm eligibility, confirm appropriate documents needed for certification purposes and set up an appointment. Appointments are limited and filled on a first-come first-served basis.

Goochland 4-H member wins Heifer Jackpot prize By Ben Orcutt news@goochlandgazette.com

At just 15, Christopher A. Branson Jr. appears well on his way to becoming a successful cattleman. A member of the Goochland 4-H Club, Chris recently learned that he won $250 for claiming the Fredericksburg Feeder Calf Association Commercial Heifer Jackpot for his success in showing his two-year-old heifer Buttercup during the summer. A sophomore at Patrick Henry High School, Chris lives with his parents in Hanover on their 25-acre Misty Meadows Farm. In addition to Buttercup, Chris has four other heifers – a female cow that hasn’t had a

calf – and one bull. Last summer, three of the highlights for Chris and Buttercup were earning grand champion at a show in Caroline County and supreme champion in the youth division of the Fredericksburg show and reserve grand champion in the open competition at Fredericksburg. Chris does aspire to becoming successful in the cattle business. “I hope I can, but right now I’m just starting at a small scale and just see where it goes from there,” he said. Chris pays for his cattle from money he earns working. First he pays his tithes to Winns Baptist Church and then he puts money in a bank account to pay for his cattle. Chris has been a member of

the Goochland 4-H Club for a few years. “Really, I enjoy being able to go and teach the younger kids what I know,” he said. “Even though it’s very little what I know, I like to go and at least try to help them with what I do know.” Chris is humble in talking about his knowledge of cattle, but it is apparent from his success that he knows a great deal. Judges look for a cow that is feminine in its head and neck area, Chris said. “And they look at their heart girth, which is right where their shoulders and back meet,” he added. “If it is dipped, that means they’re [cows] weak in the heart girth. Exercising helps build muscle and another thing I’ve learned, you can hide some blemishes in a cow that’s got a little fat on her….” Chris has developed a bond with his cows. “I mean, I’ll go out there [on the farm] and talk to them and they know it’s me,” he said. Raising cattle has taught him valuable life lessons,

Chris added. “It really teaches you a lot about life,” he said. “You get up in the morning, you gotta go take care of animals…. I mean, it teaches me that I need to get up and start my day. I mean when you get out of school, out of college, you’ve got to get up and go to work. If you haven’t got that work ethic in you now, then you’re not going to succeed as a person. You need to learn that when you’re young.” Chris credits Jesse Tate, a farm manager in Goochland, his uncle, Mark Richardson

NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County in Marion, and Jocelyn Dailey, Goochland extension agent for 4-H youth development, for helping him learn about raising cattle. Chris also thanks God for what he’s learned and the help he’s received from his parents. Chris’s father, 54-year-old Christopher A. Branson Sr., said he and his wife, Wanda F. Branson, 46, are proud of their son’s accomplishments with his cattle and the way he’s handled all of his responsibilities. “He’s done pretty good with all of that, so yeah, we’re

right proud of him,” Chris’s father said. “He’s made a lot of friends and he figured out there’s a lot of pretty girls at the cow shows….” Mrs. Branson is equally proud of Chris. “He’s very responsible and I like the fact that when people come up to talk to him about his cattle, he’s very knowledgeable,” she said. “It shows that he does what he’s supposed to do. do it for the kids. But they’re his animals. He’s in 4-H. I mean, we encourage him. We do what we can, but they’re his responsibility and he does a great job with that.” In addition to raising cattle and being an A/B student, Chris also enjoys hunting and fishing and playing football for Patrick Henry. Standing 6 feet tall and weighing 260 pounds, Chris hopes to become an imposing left offensive guard this fall for

the Patriots’ varsity football team. After he graduates from high school, his desire is to enroll at Virginia Tech. “I want to get in the beef program at Tech is what I really want to do and hopefully play football for ‘em,” Chris said. “That’d be really good up there. And I want to do a minor in business because if you don’t learn the business part of it, you’ll never succeed.”

Benedictine gets tested in Spring Break Tourney By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

Though ranked #2 in the VIS, the Benedictine baseball team went into last week’s Lee-Davis Spring Break Tournament looking to test themselves against some of the top public school talent in the Central Region. Facing #4 Douglas Freeman, #6 Atlee and Lee-Davis on their home fields, the Cadets came away with a 1-2 record, but learned something about themselves in the process. “Playing these kind of schools, these big hitting schools, I like it because it’s more of a challenge,” said Benedictine senior pitcher Ryan Millican. “You can only get better.” The Cadets rolled to an 8-3 win over Atlee on Wednesday then suffered two losses on Thursday, a 5-4, 10-inning loss at Freeman and a 9-3 loss to a surprising Lee-Davis squad- the only team to emerge from the tournament undefeated. It was Millican who got things going for the Cadets by virtually shutting down the potent Atlee offense in their opener, getting six strikeouts and limiting the Raiders to four hits in a complete game. “He was fantastic,” said Benedictine head coach Sean Ryan. “He’s been our arm this year. He’s been our ace, that’s exactly what we wanted him to be coming in as a senior… He threw with velocity and best of all he was able to mix in his off speed pitches and had a nice breaking ball today.” Even Millican was surprised at how well he did against the Raiders. “I thought it was going to be a scrap all the way through; a five run game for both of us,” he said. “I thought it was going to be down to the last throw, the last inning tied up. I didn’t think we’d come out and hit like that. I didn’t think I’d come out and pitch like that. It worked out well as a team and

got things done.” Millican entered the contest with an ERA of 0.67 and did little to damage that percentage. The only scores by Raiders came in the bottom of the seventh on the heels of Benedictine errors. Millican admits the possibility of a shutout may have got to him. “I felt good about it up until the last inning,” Millican said. “I was in the dugout and started thinking about it too much.” With Benedictine leading 80, Atlee’s Mitch Keeler led off with a single to left and David Graubies reached when his shot to short was bobbled. With one out, Roy Coates loaded the bases for the Raiders when Millican was called for a balk, the umpire’s fourth such call of the day; two against each team. Millican said the call did not put him in the best of moods. “After that balk I kind of got mad a little bit and tried to throw a little harder and things went downhill from there.”

The senior got his second strikeout of the inning but then walked Spencer Jefferson to push home Keeler for Atlee’s first run of the day. Next up, Atlee’s Chop Pulisic lived up to his nickname and sent a chopper to the mound. Millican made a leaping stop on the ball but his throw to first went over the fence and Atlee scored its final two runs of the game. But Millican bounced back to get a groundout from Dalton Ruch to take the win. Aside from the final inning stumble, the Cadets were impressive on offense and came up with some amazing plays on defense. The first two innings gave every impression the game was going to be a true pitcher’s duel between Millican and Atlee side-arm righty Cam Maxey. But Jordan Schmeer (2-for-3, 2B, run), the Cadets smallest player, came up with a big hit out of the nine-slot to lead off the third when he blooped a hit

over first. “He’s a defensive guy first but he can obviously swing the bat too,” Ryan said of Schmeer. “Our top of the order I think is very good. If we can get our seven, eight, nine guys to contribute, get on base via walk or hit we can be a very dangerous team. Jordan is the perfect ninehole hitter for us.” Colton Konvicka then singled to left and a double to right center by Michael Childress (2run, 2B) sent the pair home for a 2-0 lead. The Cadets lead grew to 3-0 when Childress attempted to steal third and the pickoff throw went into the outfield. Atlee looked as if they would answer in the bottom of the inning. Millican corralled a Mike Harmon shot to the mound but stutter-stepped the bag at first as both players reached at the same time. Harmon was ruled safe. With two outs, Pulisic singled up the middle and Harmon advanced to third.

Next up, Ruch sent what appeared to be an easy RBI shot up the middle but short stop David Geary made a spectacular play on defense. Geary dove behind second to stop the ball and while still sliding on his side lobbed to Schmeer at second for a force out of Pulisic. “I told them that was a Major League play,” Ryan told his team. “He made the dive, got up and Jordan was there to call for the ball. I thought that was fantastic.” As difficult as the play was, it was topped in the bottom of the sixth. Once again it was Ruch at the plate who this time lofted a ball foul on the right side. Subbing in at first for the Cadets, Shane Williams raced after the ball and made a diving catch over the fence as he crashed into it, fell to the ground and held onto the ball. “I told the team that’s the best catch we’ve ever had from any first baseman in my nine years,” Ryan said. “That was a heck of a catch and he just did

a great job of realizing where he was, holding onto the ball and selling out.” Millican agreed. “I’d never seen something like that before,” he said. “That was a hell of a play by him.” The Cadets added one more in the top of the fifth when Geary doubled to deep left then came home on a shot through the gap at first by Adam Donohoe. Benedictine broke the game open in the top of the seventh. Facing Atlee reliever Josh Dunn, Konvicka was walked then stole second. With one out, Geary reached on a balk bringing Caleb Myers to the mound. A single to the left by Sam Slough drove in Konvicka then Donohoe (2 for 4, HR, 4 RBIs) cleared the bags with a shot over the right field fence for an 8-0 Cadet lead. “Today, I think that’s the glimpse at how good we can be,” Ryan said. “We still did a few see Cadets >page 17

Saints serve up humble pie to VIS #1 STAB, 4-0 The St. Anne Belfield girls soccer team came to St. Catherine’s Goochland athletic campus sporting the #1 VIS ranking and an undefeated record. They left with a 0-4 loss as the result of a dominating performance by the home team. The Saints, ranked #7 in last week’s Times Dispatch Top-10, allowed just three shots on goal while getting 11 of their own and controlled the flow of play in about the same proportion. According to STAB assistant coach John Davis, being short-handed contributed to the outcome. “Well, it didn’t go the way that we wanted it to go; that’s for darn sure, “he said. “We’re missing some players and it showed in the way that we did and didn’t move the ball today.” On the other bench, St. Catherine head coach Laurie Marshalek had plenty to smile about. “St. Anne’s is ranked number one in the state,” she said. “They’ve proven themselves to be a good team, so having a 4-0 win on them is big. Our girls came to play today. They have obviously a couple of players that our defense has shut down; and defensively we were on the ball and we were money today. Offensively we took advantage

Cadets continued from > page 16

of our opportunities and capitalized on them.” Davis was quick to show his admiration and praise for the Saints’ efforts. “I think they played a little deeper which made it difficult for us to get behind them,” he said. “I think they were remarkably well organized. I really do. They are a remarkably organized team, and I really liked the pressure that they put on us. I thought they moved the ball around really well.” A big part of what dismantled STAB’s attack came from an SC coaching decision. “We decided to go with four defenders in the back,” said Saints assistant coach Mauricio Pava. “We tried to control their possible fast attacks.” Coordinating the strategy was Saints’ team captain Morgan Powell, who scored twice. “That was the first time in a while that we did a 4-4-2,” she said. “We normally do a 3-5-2; so the difference of the formations gave us a little bit more of an edge.” Thirty minutes into the match, Powell boomed in the Saints’ first score with a long penalty kick. “Morgan capitalized from a set play about 30 yards out, and finished in the upper 90 left side of the goal,” Marshalek said. “You can’t ask for too much better than that.” Powell was psyched to get on the board first. “We lost to

them last year; so I thought that was a good (thumbs up) for us.” Powell touched in goal number three from outside the box on the left side with an assist from senior Amanda Kim. “Getting the third goal I thought we had a really good chance of winning and we just had to defend from there on and maybe get another goal; and we did,” Powell said. “I was so excited and so proud of our team.” Midfield also played a large role to the game’s outcome. “The center midfielders kind of controlled the center of the field which obviously makes things a lot easier,” Marshalek said. “Morgan and Amanda (Kim) distributed the ball well today; and pressured offensively as well as got back defensively.” With only two seniors on the roster, the Saints used three of four eighth graders in the match up. “Seeley Yoo, was in France for the last two weeks playing for a team over there, so we love having her back.” Marshalek said. “She is just so smooth, calm and collected with the ball. She makes it look too easy. She creates opportunities and sets people up to capitalize on the opportunities; and she takes chances as well when she can. She had a couple of shots that were good chances, but

RBI but the host team broke a 4-4 deadlock with a gamewinning run in the bottom of the 10th. The Cadets could not find their offense in the nightcap at Lee-Davis and were limited to four hits in the contest. The Confederates broke open a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third by scoring two runs then added five more in the bottom of the fourth.

they just didn’t have enough muscle behind them.” Fellow eighth grader Addie Wright made a position switch from forward to defender for the game. “I was really impressed,” Pava said. Throughout the game, Wright exhibited good ball control, conditioning and passing skills to keep the ball in play and away from STAB players.
