The Goochland Sheriff ’s Office has once again received accreditation from the Virginia Professional Law Enforcement Standards Commission (VLEPSC). At the May 1 Goochland Board of Supervisors meeting Goochland Sheriff James L. Agnew received a plaque acknowledging the accreditation from Brunswick County Sheriff Bryan Roberts.

Agnew gave much of the credit for the award to his staff. “Lieutenant Terry Pleasants does all the hard work,” he said in a telephone interview last Friday. “She’s the guru.” Agnew also credited Major Don Bewkes with helping his office receive accreditation for the fourth consecutive time. VLEPSC found the Sheriff ’s Office to be in full compliance with all 187 standards and 420 sub-standards dur-

My Manakin Market ushered in its second season on Saturday under sunny skies. The farmers market will be open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays through October. It’s located at 68 Broad Street Road behind Essex Bank in Manakin-Sabot. Lisa Dearden is the owner/manager of the market and said in addition to produce, the market features baked goods, pastured meats, eggs, cakes, cookies, flowers, artists and crafts, a winery and vendors that cook food on site. “Last year we did really, really, really well,” Dearden said. “Not that many people knew about us….So this year, a lot more people know about us and we’ve been really focusing our marketing efforts on the far West End – Short Pump, Short Pump,

Jake E. King Jr. won this year’s Crime Stoppers Poster Contest, making it two years in a row that a Goochland High School student has won the award. Last year’s winner was Brett Alvis, who won the award as a sophomore. “And so when Jake won for the second year in a row – I mean, this is just an awesome poster – we just couldn’t believe it, said Kim Bachman, King’s art teacher. “So we’re going to try to go for three years next year. Bachman said she’s given her art students the assignment of entering the poster contest for several years. The poster contest is open to high school art students from Charles City County, Goochland County, Hanover County, Henrico County, New Kent County and the city of Richmond, according to a press release. The posters are supposed to show the work of solving crimes in the community, the press release states. The winners from the six jurisdictions are eligible for the grand prize, which was presented to King on April 26, at the Metro Richmond Crime Stoppers’ Board of Directors meeting. King was joined at the presentation by his parents, Jed and Terry King, and his brother, John, 12, a 6th-grader at Goochland Middle School. Each local winner is presented with $500, Bachman said, and the grand prize winner gets an extra $500. The contest is sponsored by the Retail Merchants Association, Bachman said. The poster designed by King features a photo of a

Chuck Taylor Converse AllStar sneaker, with the Crime Stoppers logo where the Converse logo would normally be. The Crime Stoppers telephone number is positioned vertically like a leg attached to the shoe and other Crime Stoppers information is to the right of the shoe and on the side of the shoe. Bachman said the posters must contain all of the Crime Stoppers’ pertinent information, with the addition this year of a number to text to make a report. A 17-year-old junior, King said he got the idea to use the Converse shoe after his pre-AP chemistry teacher, Mitchell Kupferman, who formerly was in law enforcement working in forensics, said that the Converse shoe is one of the shoes that’s most often associated with crime. King said he took a photograph of a Converse shoe and then used Photoshop to design the rest of the 11-inch

by 14-inch poster. “I mean, I thought it was good, but I didn’t know I was going to get this far with it, King said. “I’m pretty impressed with myself. I never expected this. In addition to compiling a 4.6 grade point average, King also plays football and baseball for the Bulldogs. King said the Bulldogs advancing to the state championship in football this past year was one of the best things he’s ever been involved with, “but this [poster contest] is one of the biggest individual things I’ve done. His classmates are impressed with his accomplishment as well, King said. “They’re pretty awed too, King said. “They didn’t expect it from anybody. Bachman said King’s art classmates clapped for him on Thursday. Asked how proud she is of King, Bachman said, “So much I asked him if I could

give him a hug. Bachman said that one comment she heard about King’s poster is that it “’was very clean.’ “It wasn’t real busy, Bachman added. “When I looked at some of the others in the past, the message didn’t come through quite as well because there was so much going on. But King’s poster got the message across loud and clear and it will be displayed in area high schools and businesses, Bachman said. Goochland High School Principal Frances Ball also is pleased with King’s success. “Well, of course I’m thrilled and I’m so glad that Jake is talented enough and shows his talent to the world, Ball said. “We are thrilled. This is the second year in a row that we’ve won the Crime Stoppers poster [contest] and Jake is just a wonderful example of our students here at Goochland High School.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Respect the parking rules Sometimes a tidbit of news comes our way that looks inconsequential at first glance but assumes greater importance upon further examination. Like people parking in handicapped spaces in parking lots or in emergency areas reserved for fire and rescue vehicles. We’ve all seen it; maybe some of us have done it. I mean, we’re just jumping out to run in the store for a minute. There’s no fire going to happen while we pick up our soda, right? Well, probably not but that’s not the point. In an orderly society, citizens will respect sensible rules and regulations even without the fear of penalty. In a working, productive society, citizens don’t mind taking a few extra steps or a couple minutes more to conduct their business if it makes the community more safe. In a respectful society, people recognize those with handicaps and help them, rather than making things harder for them. In a cohesive community, everyone realizes we’re all in the same boat and what helps others also potentially helps us. Anyone of us may need a handicapped space one day. If it’s taken by someone who doesn’t need it, we’ll suffer. I got to thinking about what the disregard of commonsense rules means while talking to a reader who is concerned about the problem of parking abuse in Goochland. No, it’s not the end of the world. Most likely there will still be enough handicapped spaces for those who need them. And hopefully, fire and rescue vehicles will be able to get to where they need to go to put out a fire or bring out an injured or sick person even if some dummy parks in the fire lane. Then again, there’s always the chance a blocked emergency lane could cause a tragedy. Such behavior in itself tells us something about the health of the society we live in. Respect for sensible rules that benefit everyone and concern for the less fortunate are characteristic of responsible, mature people who care about their community. On the other hand, unwillingness to endure even the slightest bit of inconvenience to enhance safety (in the case of fire lanes) or ease the lives of the handicapped shows a society where the accepted idea of appropriate behavior has begun to deteriorate. If we can’t do these small things that demand so very little of us, how can we deal with the big problems we face? So let’s do the right thing. Park where you are supposed to and walk that extra 50 feet. You’ll feel better and in a small way, the entire community will benefit. - Ken Odor

Last week, Grace Episcopal Church of Goochland kicked off its Youth Group’s annual fundraiser - Flamingo Flocking. After sunset under the blanket of darkness, several youngsters planted over 20 pink flamingos on the lawn of the unsuspecting Sheriff Agnew. For $25, you too can arrange for special lawn Flamingos to flock to the yard of your choice. Once flocked, Grace Church will retrieve the pesky Flamingos the following day. So be on the lookout for Flamingo flocks throughout Goochland this summer. All proceeds go to supporting Nets for Life by purchasing malaria nets for children in Africa. There are an estimated 250 million cases of malaria each year, resulting in nearly 800,000 deaths. The majority of these deaths are children younger than five years old. For more information or to arrange for a Flamingo Flocking, call 556-3051 or e-mail gracechurch698@comcast.net.

Road warrior softball returns home Bulldogs continue roll as post season nears By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

The Goochland softball team finally returned home last Wednesday after an extended period on the road. The Bulldogs (13-1, 10-0 JRD) last played at home on Apr. 27 and even though they swept the slate of road games, as the saying goes, there’s no place like home. Facing Cumberland in a Wednesday James River District matchup, Goochland kept their momentum going with a 7-0 win. It was their eighth shutout in 13 games this season. “It feels good to have some home games,” said Goochland head coach Amy Henneberger. “We have a good following, a lot of parents go with us on the road- (but home) It’s a big plus.” Third baseman Jordan Fleming agreed. “We had a lot of home games the beginning of the season, which is hard because you have a lot of away games at the end, but I think we can handle it.” On Friday the Bulldogs went back on the road to Nottoway to pick up a rain-out game and came away with a 12-2 win. At home or away, the Bulldogs have pretty well dominated every game they’ve played. They are currently undefeated in James River District play, have only lost one game on the season and were ranked #6 in last week’s Times-Dispatch poll and 17th among all levels in the state on MaxPreps.com. In their wins, Goochland has out-scored their opponents 83-9. Despite the lopsided scores, defense has carried the Bulldogs. In their first six games, they gave up a total of two runs before falling to Louisa in a 2-1 contest on Mar. 30.

Fleming felt the loss has actually made the team better. “I think that the loss was a good thing for us,” she said. “We were getting kind of cocky. We’d won a lot of games and the loss was definitely a good reality check for us.” Facing Cumberland, Henneberger, as she done most of the season, utilized two distinctly different pitchers to keep the Cumberland batters at bay. Freshman lefty Jackie Tremain started things off and right-hander Kaytlyn Jones came in the fifth to change things up. The pair gave up a total of three hits. “We don’t see a lot of lefthanders in the league, that’s something new for them to see,” said Cumberland coach Travis Gilliam. Tremain struck out the first two Cumberland batters throwing a total of seven pitches before Kamren Gilliam placed a well hit shot between first and second for a single. But the Bulldogs quickly halted any threat. Goochland got two runners on in the bottom of the first but could not capitalize. After a one-two-three top of the second, the Bulldogs went back to work. With one out, Tremain helped her own cause with a double to left center. Next up, Erika Spencer reached third with a RBI shot to right center for a 1-0 lead. Kiersten McCray successfully bunted, then reached second when no Cumberland player covered the bag as they tried to hold Spencer at third. Spencer later scored on a sacrifice from Caitlyn Dove. McCray then made the lead 30 on a single to short right by Chakiryn Jackson. Over the first three and two thirds innings, Goochland got 10 runners on the bags but only produced three runs,

which was an item of some, but not a lot of concern for Henneberger. “Sometimes it takes us a while with the pitching in the district,” she said. Henneberger feels that her team needs time to adjust to the pitching, which is different than what they saw at the Group AA level last season. “It’s taken longer in some of the games than I would have liked to for the bats to come around,” she said. “At the end we usually end up with a lot of hits, it just takes awhile.” Such was true against Cumberland. Cumberland pitcher Quinn Duty did her part at keeping the Bulldogs at bay early. “I credit that to our pitching, putting the ball in places where they couldn’t get good solid hits and where they put the ball we was able to play it,” Gilliam said. In the bottom of the fourth Spencer reached when her shot to short was bobbled. McCray then singled down the left line and Dove got on with a shot to third, but in the process Cumberland got a force on Spencer. However, with two out,

Fleming came to the plate and broke things open with a twoRBI triple over the head of the center fielder. As she stepped to the plate, Fleming thought she could take advantage. “I think all of the outfielders kind of played in the whole game,” she said. “I was kind of surprised, even after everyone was kind of hitting well.” As soon as she made contact with the ball, Fleming knew she was going for a long run. “You can tell because of the way it feels when it hits the bat,” she said. “Even like that one, sometimes you can’t even feel it at all. It just feels so good. It’s like, ‘Ah, this is gone’.” Fleming’s hit appeared to break the ice and the bats kept swinging in the bottom of the fifth. “Hitting is contagious in this game and it gives us a lot more momentum and gets us pumped up and everyone wants to hit after someone gets a good hit like that,” Fleming said. With two runners on, a single to center by Tremain drove in Taylor Scruggs and Spencer scored on a Cumberland error for a 7-0 lead.

Spencer then made the defensive play of the game in the top of the seventh to seal the win. With one out and a runner at first, Cumberland’s Stacey Knuckols sent a blistering line drive towards first. Spencer reached out to snare the ball then stepped on first to end the game on a solo double-play. Even though Cumberland lost, Gilliam felt his team stuck to their game plan against Goochland. “Just try to play a solid game. That’s what we talked about. Just try to compete,” he said. “You’ve got to do that against a good team like this. We had some miscues that we probably shouldn’t have had.” Two weeks away from the district tournament, Fleming is pleased with the performance of the Bulldogs. “I think we’re playing really great,” she said. “We’re definitely playing as a team, very

cohesive this year. We’re talking really well, we’re communicating, we’re hitting really well all of the time.” Henneberger agreed. “We were hitting the ball and great pitching and we’re putting it all together,” she said. “I just hope it all continues.” Cumberland....... 000 000 0 — 0 3 4 Goochland......... 030 220 x — 7 10 0 Duty and Knuckols. Goochland baseball has been a tale of two records Undefeated in district play Bulldogs are winless outside of it By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Goochland managed to keep two distinctly different one-sided records alive last week. The Bulldogs remained winless in non-district play after suffering a 10-0 loss to visiting Caroline on Thursday. However, at the same time Goochland remains undefeated in the James River District after downing Nottoway and Cumberland. The Bulldog’s inability to win outside the district has left Coach Wes Farkas puzzled. However, if Caroline’s performance was any indication, it might be a question of pitching. “Most of the teams in the JR have one, maybe two great pitchers,” Farkas said. “When we step out of the district, the

teams have four or five good two perfect records intact.” starters. It’s a step up that so For Caroline, Tee Beasley far, we haven’t been able to was making his first start adjust to. We still have our since suffering a shoulder

injury late last year. He made the most of his four innings on the hump, holding the Bulldogs to two of their four

total hits. “Pitching is the strength of our game,” said Cavalier Coach Frank Dow. “We’re easing Tee back in with a couple of innings at a time, but tonight we brought him out first and he threw well.” Caroline’s 10-hit explosion didn’t hurt either. Dow said the team has had difficulty hitting the ball in the past few games. That wasn’t a problem against the Bulldogs. “We turned it around tonight and got some good hits and had some guys on the bases,” Dow said. Caroline scored two in the first inning and added more in fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh. For Farkas it was a game best soon forgotten. “It’s the kind of game you have to have a short memory with,” he said. “There’s not too much you can learn from a loss like this.” The shutout gives the

Cavaliers their second victory over the Bulldogs this season, something Dow isn’t used to. “We usually have to battle these guys,” he said. “We have some close games with these guys. For whatever reason, we came in hot and it worked out for us, both times.” However, Farkas was not playing down the talent his Bulldogs faced. “Caroline is a good baseball team,” he said. “They’re leading their district, and they have some very good arms over there.” For Farkas, the Bulldogs will concentrate on the remaining James River schedule. Even with what seems like an insurmountable lead in the district, the team will continue to focus on the little things and improve. “We had a successful week with two wins in the district,” he said. “With four games left in the district, our pitching is solid and we’ve hit the ball well up until tonight.”

Goochland tennis serving up a memorable season By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

With two weeks remaining in the regular season, the Goochland girl’s tennis team has already surpassed their win total of 2011. The return to the James River District coincided with a year of additional experience to make this a turnaround season for the Bulldogs. Coach Teresa Hood came into the season knowing her team had potential to do good things. “I was really fortunate that my top six all returned form last year and they have all improved dramatically in their play from last year,” she said. Mackenzie Nunnally (#1) and Riley Allison (#6) are the only seniors on the squad. Brett Alvis (#2), Kerri Anderson (#3), Molly McLaughlin (#4)

and Catherine Brown (#5) are all juniors and will be back again next season. But when it comes to her top player, Hood cannot say enough about how much Nunnally improved her game over the summer. “MacKenzie Nunnally is very, very strong #1 player,” Hood said. “I just can’t say enough about how well she’s played her matches this year.” Nunnally’s lone singles loss of the year came against powerful Powhatan sophomore Laura Ramthum. The added year of experience from last year’s squad has also helped Goochland dole out some payback. “We’ve won three matches this year against teams that we struggled against last year,” Hood said. “Last year we went 1-1 against Charlottesville and we beat

them both times this year. In fact the first match we played against them we beat them 90.” Last season Fluvanna beat Goochland 8-1 and 7-2 in their two matches. “They pretty handily beat us last year,” Hood said. “This year we split matches with Fluvanna, the first time we played them we beat them 7-2 and then the second time they beat us 5-4, it came down to the last doubles match.” With only three girl’s tennis teams in the JRD, league play did not begin until this past week. The Bulldogs got off to a quick start to take first place by downing Buckingham 8-1 then picking up a 7-2 win at Randolph-Henry on Friday. “I think we have a pretty good chance of winning the

Eagle makes Classic connection with Feed More Golf tournament will benefit area’s needy By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

When the “Road to the LPGA” makes its annual August stop at Richmond Country Club one of the less publicized benefits to the community comes from money given to local charities. While the list of charities over the past years has been diverse, none would appear to be timelier than the one selected to benefit from this year’s Eagle Classic at RCC. Last week, the LPGA Symetra Tour event organizers (formerly the LPGA Futures Tour) announced that Richmond based FeedMore will be the recipient of the charity proceeds from the Aug. 13-19 golf tournament. FeedMore is the umbrella

She pointed out the Bulldogs got an additional boost from the input of her assistant, who also happens to be her husband Tom. However, this is not an unqualified coaching tandem. Tom Hood played at Virginia Tech before going on to coach and play professionally. “He’s been a big, big help,” Teresa said. The JRD does not hold a district tournament and regional singles play begins May, 22. Doubles play begins on May, 29. Both are at Wilson Memorial in Staunton. With the post season drawing near, there is very little that Hood believes the team needs to improve upon. “I have to say I’m really,

organization for the Central Virginia Food Bank, Meals on Wheels and the Community Kitchen. “This is a tremendous help because we’re always looking for partners out in our community to help us provide food,” said FeedMore CEO Fay Lohr. “Summertime is a time when we are really desperate for food.” Lohr said that with a new school year rapidly approaching, vacation bills to be paid and end of summer schedules, feeding the hungry is a cause often forgotten. “Their mind is on everything but the hungry,” Lohr said. “Unfortunately, the children we serve, which there are way too many every day, they are concerned because they are hungry.” From the FeedMore distribution center, 130,000 people a month are being fed. In the really pleased overall with the way they’ve been playing,” she said. “I think if anything they need to work on their consistency. They’re just playing more aggressively and getting that ball back in an aggressive manor. Sometime they play a little tentative- sometimes play

summertime, the FeedMore kitchen makes 4,000-6,000 meals a day. “This is the boost in the arm we really need,” Lohr said. RCC golf pro and tournament organizer Matthew Schultze pointed out it is a unique relationship between

the event and charity. “To me it’s very impressive that a golf tournament and 144 girls coming to compete can benefit the community through an association like FeedMore,” he said. “We can get out to the community what it’s all about.” As President of Eagle

Construction, the sponsor behind the Eagle Classic, it was Bud Ohly’s job to designate what charity the tournament would benefit. “It’s a little amusing to me how we ended up being associated with FeedMore,” Ohly said. “I gave myself a deadline, which I waited until like two hours before my deadline to choose a charity event. I just kept saying I can’t think about this. I Googled Richmondbased charities and I looked for the top two. “I looked for the ones that have big organizations and I tried to call the top executive at each one,” Ohly said. “I only got to my second call before Fay (Lohr) called me back. It was like seven minutes later. “I didn’t know the organization as well as I do now,” Ohly said. “We didn’t choose FeedMore, they chose us because it’s an amazing, amaz-

not to lose instead of to win.” But overall she could not be more pleased with the Bulldogs’ accomplishments. “I think they have improved tremendously and have a lot to be proud of,” Hood said.

ing thing that (they) do.” Most of the proceeds that go on to the tournament’s charity are derived from early week events such as the Pro/Am Tournament, Style Show, Silent Auction and Meet The Pros party. Slots are still available for the Pro/Am Tournament. Tickets to the Meet the Pros Party are $55 per person or $100 per couple while tickets to the style show are $20. “We can do five meals for every dollar that’s donated,” Lohr said. “So every time you buy a ticket, you’re already fed somebody before you got (to the golf course) and had fun.” Last year, the tournament donated approximately $20,000 to VCU Massey Cancer Center. “The most important thing is, hunger has a cure,” Lohr said. “It’s not like childhood cancer. We’ve got a cure we just all need to work together.”
