Wine festival a success By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

Thousands of metro residents and visitors from out of town and out of state made the trek to the western end of Goochland County last weekend to check out the second annual Rassawek Spring Jubilee Wine and Heritage Festival. A lot of them were glad they came. Richmond resident Susan Naoroz brought her two boys and their grandparents, Patty and Frank Mercado, who were visiting from

Growing up in the family real estate business in South Carolina, Matthew Ryan’s father taught him to look for solutions and ways to say yes to get deals done. Now he plans to use those lessons in his new job as Goochland’s Director of Economic Development. Ryan, 31, grew up in Pawley’s Island, S.C., where his family has been in the real estate business for 40 years, he said. “Dad groomed me to take over the family business,” said Ryan, who is married with two young children. But he had other ideas. “I wanted to make my own mark,” he explained. “I didn’t like having my future and my family’s intertwined.” On the job just a few weeks, Ryan hopes to encourage new businesses to locate in Goochland and to keep those already here happy. For companies already doing business in Goochland, Ryan wants to create a business visitation program, meeting with them to learn about their needs. “We want to keep the people who are already here happy,” he explained. “They sometimes get lost in the shuffle.” A licensed broker since 2004, Ryan said his background in real estate development should serve him well. And he’s not afraid of hard work – while studying for his degree in political science at the College of Charleston, he worked as a property manager full-time, expanding his family company’s holdings. When it comes to bringing new development to Goochland County, Ryan says the county has unique qualities attractive to developers. Metro convenience with rural charm, a low tax rate, workforce availability, a good transportation network and quality of life are just some of the county’s selling points, according to the new director. Not to mention the amount of “raw land” available, he said.

New Director of Economic Development Matthew Ryan already has plans to spur growth in the county.

And recent developments indicate a community ready to embrace growth, said Ryan, citing the approval of multi-family zoning for West Creek by the Goochland Board of Supervisors. “It shows the board of supervisors can make critical decisions. It was a great step on the board’s part,” said Ryan. To help prospective developers decide to come to the county, Ryan plans to examine how to “streamline the process for new business coming to Goochland,” which might involve making the see Director > page 3

Combining Goochland folklore with a desire for sweet treats, the Devil Monkey Ice Cream Parlor is slated to open June 2 at 2913 River Road West Suite C in the Courthouse Village Shopping Center. The ice cream parlor is the brainchild of John and Kristin Jandzinski, who have lived with their three children - Keith, 14, Karna, 12, and Maya 7 - in Sandy Hook for about five years. “Well, we always wanted to open up a ice cream store, said 43-year-old Jandzinski, who works for a biotech firm. “We just didn’t know when the right time would be and this year seemed like the right time. Jandzinski said they decided on the name Devil Monkey Ice Cream Parlor based on the 1970s legend of a lost monkey in the courthouse area. “Apparently there was a monkey loose back in those days and they couldn’t catch it, Jandzinski said. “So they called it the devil monkey and that’s kind of how the folklore started from my understanding and there’s been some talk about it every now and then a couple times a year and so we just thought we’d build off that folklore that was around. Devil Monkey Ice Cream

Parlor plans to sell Carytownbased Bev’s Ice Cream products, which include “a multitude of different flavors, sorbets and sherbets,â€? Jandzinski said. There also will be some sugarfree ice cream as well, Jandzinski added. “We will have Belgian waffles on certain days,â€? Jandzinski said. “We’ll also have a little baked goods section in here‌.â€? Jandzinski said his wife bakes cupcakes, muffins and cakes, which can be served with coffee and those items will be for sale in addition to ice cream. Quiche also may be on the menu, Jandzinski said. “It’s very exciting,â€? Mrs. Jandzinski, 39, said of planning for the ice cream parlor’s opening. “It’s been very stressful, but it’s exciting. We’re really looking forward to getting started.â€? The ice cream parlor will be open Tuesday through Sunday, with hours of roughly 11:30 a.m. to 9 or 10 p.m. While her husband will be manning the store some, Mrs. Jandzinski said “mostly I’ll be here.â€? In addition to being located near other businesses, the ice cream parlor also will be close to the YMCA, schools and activities that will be going on during the summer. There will be things for children to do at the ice cream parlor, such as contests, Mrs. Jandzinski said. The Jandzinskies’ children also are looking forward to getting involved in the business. “Well, it’s pretty exciting,â€? said Keith, an 8th-grader at Goochland Middle School.

“It’s kind of neat to hear like people at school talk about it. So they think it’s kind of neat that we’re finally opening up an ice cream shop. A 6th-grader at Goochland Middle School, Karna also is excited about the store’s opening. “Well I always thought it would be neat to have an ice cream shop and I like to bake and stuff with my mom and I love ice cream and pastry, Karna said. “I’m going to be really happy and I can make ice

cream and make toppings and make stuff with my mom, said Maya, who’s in the 1st-grade at Goochland Elementary School. To the family’s knowledge, the Devil Monkey Ice Cream Parlor will be the only ice cream store in the county. “You know, I’m just looking forward to having fun, Mrs. Jandzinski said. “I hope that everybody has fun who comes in. Everybody loves ice cream. It’s something that you’re happy to get, so hopefully everybody will be in a good mood who comes in.

Festival continued from > page 1 at the event. “What’s so cool is that they have things for kids and adults,” she said. Patty Mercado said the family had been at the festival since opening at 10 a.m. “The most fascinating thing for the kids was the tree house,” she said. Other kids’ activities included fishing with the help of volunteers from Westview on the James. Westview staff member Greg Ragland helped Dutch and Devin Naoroz with their fishing pole when it wouldn’t cast right and showed them how to bait the hook. Live music was on tap for both days. Jean Garrett of Buckingham County clapped and kept time as River City Band played “John Henry.” “It’s always a beautiful thing, said Kathy Murray, co-owner of Byrd Cellars. “Great weather and great history.” “The festival was fortunate to have amazing weather and thus was able to predictably grow its crowd to nearly double from 2011,” said Tracey Reed Leverty of Echelon Event Management.

Ryan said a critical factor in his decision to ask for his new job came when he met with County Administrator Rebecca Dickson. “Right away I knew I was full speed ahead at wanting this job,” he said of the interview. The favorable impression was mutual. “During the interview process, Mr. Ryan impressed the panel with his focused energy, motivation and ideas,” said Dickson. “He has jumped right in-already making progress on priorities such as our economic development web site, visiting and contacting existing businesses and reaching out to new ones. He has terrific contacts in the community and is already a great addition to Goochland.” Although he is a classic

“people person,” who likes to meet face to face, Ryan said he realizes the importance of the internet in attracting development. To that end he envisions creating a stand-alone Economic Development web site as one of his first projects. Another tool in Ryan’s kit will be to conduct site tours for likely developers, taking them to the areas targeted for development in the county’s plan: West Creek, the Courthouse Village and Centerville. He’s also a champion of the county’s efforts to foster tourism and is a member of the tourism task force. Ryan said the county had done a pretty good job during the two years since the departure of former economic development director Greg Reid. “They did a great job filling the void,” he said. “They didn’t skip a beat.” Now with the new Economic

Development Strategic Plan, adopted last October, in place and a new director, plus a slow but steady economic upturn hopefully continuing, Ryan believes good things are coming. How to do it? Just highlight what the county has to offer. “The biggest selling feature is “the quality of life,” said the new director and Ryan is ready to sell that to prospective newcomers. He’ll lean on one of the lessons his dad taught him in his long apprenticeship in the real estate business. “My father taught me never to tell anyone no in business,” said Ryan. “Anything can be achieved – it might take a little thinking outside the box but generally any problem can be solved and I think that is very important for Goochland County going forward.”

Area children with severe medical conditions will have an opportunity to be considered for medical treatment during the James River Shrine Club’s screening clinic on June 2. “This is the first clinic we’ve had,” said club member Karl E. Hawk of Goochland. Hawk, 75, said the 22-member James River Shrine Club is made up of members from Goochland and Powhatan counties. The club will hold a screening on June 2 in each locality, he said. The one in Goochland is set from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Dewitt Clinton Masonic Lodge No. 141 at 1800 Hawktown Road in Maidens. The screening is open to children 18 and under, from infants

on up, regardless of where they live, Hawk said. In fact, the children do not have to attend the clinic, Hawk said. “We’re not going to be examining anybody,” Hawk said, adding that the plan is to have someone on hand during the screening to answer medical questions. “Basically what we’re trying to do is find children that need help and just get their applications and get information….from the parents and then we would send that down to Greenville, S.C. to our closest hospital.” Shriners Hospitals for Children – Greenville will review the applications and then get back to the parents to let them know if their child qualifies for treatment. If they do, the treatment is free and the Shriners will pay for the family’s transportation to

the hospital and provide lodging for the parents, if necessary, Hawk said. Helping children is what Shriners are all about, Hawk said. “Well, that is our goal in life,” Hawk said. “The first Shriners hospital was built in Shreveport, La. in 1936 when the polio disease really hit hard and from that one hospital we have now 22 hospitals.” According to a James River Shrine Club flyer, their hospitals across the country treat maladies such as orthopedic problems associated with cerebral palsy, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, congenital hip problems, rickets, leg-length discrepancies, hand and back problems, neuromuscular disorders and scoliosis. Neither race, creed, color nor socioeconomic status matters, Hawk said. “We’re here to help any child that needs help.” The James River Shrine Club has “adopted” Nicole Baldwin, a student at Goochland High School, Hawk said. Hawk said Baldwin attends some of the club’s meetings and updates them on her progress. The club has donated a wheelchair and a mattress to Baldwin, Hawk said.

Shriner Karl Hawk holds a brochure about the June 2 screening clinic.

Baldwin has undergone a number of surgeries at Shriners Hospitals for Children – Greenville, Hawk said, adding that Baldwin is “a very astute student.” Hawk said helping a child in need is rewarding. “That’s basically what we do,” he said. “We’re in the child care business. That’s what we’re in really as Shriners. And like I say, we’ve been doing it since 1936.” For more information about the June 2 screening clinic in Goochland, call Hawk at 5564084. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

May 24, 2012

No complaints here Lately a strange thing has been happening. Almost every time I sit down to write a column I seem to find it harder and harder to achieve that level of curmudgeonly dudgeon for which we inky wretches often strive. Instead of finding things to criticize and deride, I seem instead to find things that are positive and promising. Hey, it’s not because I’m not looking! But last week darn if the same thing didn’t happen all over again. While interviewing the county’s newly arrived Director of Economic Development, Matthew Ryan, I got the impression that the county might have snagged a good one. That young man sounds like a good salesman to me and that’s what the county needs - someone to supplement the staff that the current county administration has already put together and to tout the obvious attractions Goochland has to offer prospective businesses and developers. After so many years of economic downturn, budget hand wringing, personnel upheaval, and unfavorable publicity it seems like the county is on a roll, so to speak. And then to top off the week I dropped in at that Rassawek Spring Jubilee Wine and Heritage Festival thing (wow, that’s a long name) and doggone it if just about every visitor I talked to didn’t tell me it was the best wine festival they’ve ever been to! Just like the folks I talked to last year! Truth be told it was a pretty neat event and promises to become a Goochland tradition on the order of the old annual Polo Match that we all used to look forward to each year. It’s the kind of thing that will certainly make a good impression on folks googling Goochland on the Internet to find out what the county is all about. Ought to help Ryan do his job. So what’s a grouchy old editor to do when he can’t find anything to complain about? For weeks at a time? There’s got to be some relief somewhere! But no, as noted last week, I couldn’t even complain about the high price of gas it takes to get around a big county like Goochland since the price of fuel continues to fall. Surely things will right themselves sooner or later and the natural order will be restored. After all, there’s an election coming up in November and that should give us plenty to gripe about. One can only hope. - Ken Odor

Eight-graders Alex Norman, left, and Hannah Herrmann, both 14, show off their clay creation, a rendition of Goochland Middle School’s mascot at last weeks’ Art Walk, a program designed to show off all art students’ work for the year. The show was held just prior to the concert by the GMS band last Thursday evening. “We wanted to make a crazy bird,” joked Norman. Herrmann said they made the eagle, named “Brotha E,” with a detachable head, since they were encouraging visitors to donate to the art program by dropping money into the big bird’s beak and then all they had to do was lift the head off to retrieve the funds. Sixth and and seventh-grade art teacher Amanda Tolson said this was the fifth year for the Art Walk. Ann Rohrer, who teaches eighth grade art, said the show was a good way to meet the parents. “We get a lot of good, positive feedback,” she said.

I wrote a letter here a short time ago about Delegate Peter Farrell’s vote on the mandatory ultrasound requirement prior to having an abortion. I was, and I remain, unhappy with his position on that vote. In my letter I questioned his lack of resolve in voting his conscience whether I agreed with it or not, and of course I disagreed with the overall attack on women’s civil rights that his evolving votes represented.

However I must congratulate Del. Farrell for having the courage to vote on the Thorne-Begland judgeship nomination when so many of his colleagues took the cowardly way out and refused to exercise their duty to vote one way or the other. Best of all, Del. Farrell voted for Thorne-Begland despite his being an openly gay candidate. To vote in the first place is simply to exercise the duty for which our representatives are elected, and a number of Virginia delegates failed to perform this basic duty, proving themselves unworthy of representing their constituency. Peter Farrell did his job. If he had voted against Thorne-Begland, I would have criticized his vote, but I would have been far more critical had he failed to vote at all. Congratulations to Del. Farrell for performing his duty on this contentious issue, and most of all for having the courage to stand up to what is clearly a house packed with sexist, homophobic, bigoted legislators who seem determined to turn Virginia into the laughingstock of the country by violating civil rights at every opportunity. We voted in Republicans for fiscal conservatism and to get the economy going, and instead we got a bunch of representatives more interested in putting police in our bedrooms than in addressing the critical problems that confront us. It’s time to take a closer look at the Libertarian Party folks. It is possible to get fiscal conservatism without all the bigotry, sexism and homophobia that seems to accompany the Republican Party these days. Patrick Gannon Maidens

Buffett subsidiary buys Gazette, 62 other Media General newspapers By John Reid Blackwell Media General News Service

The Richmond TimesDispatch and a host of other Southeastern newspapers, including the Goochland Gazette, will soon be in the hands of a former newspaper delivery boy turned billionaire investor. In a deal announced

Thursday, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. will acquire 63 newspapers from Richmond-based Media General Inc. for $142 million. The deal, expected to close June 25, includes all of Media General’s newspapers, with the exception of The Tampa Tribune and about 25 other daily, weekly and niche

publications in Florida. The company said it is in discussions with potential buyers for those properties. Buffett, who often has talked about working as a newspaper delivery boy during his childhood, had expressed some skepticism about the future of newspapers in recent years. But on Thursday, the man often referred to as the “Oracle of Omaha” indicated he sees a future for news organizations with a strong local focus. “In towns and cities where there is a strong sense of community, there is no more important institution than

the local paper,” Buffett said in a statement. He also delivered a message to the company’s Richmondarea employees through Terry Kroeger, the chief executive officer of BH Media Group, the Berkshire Hathaway subsidiary that will oversee the newspapers. In a meeting with employees, Kroeger said that Buffett had a prior commitment but asked that he tell the staff here, “He is so pleased about this.” Kroeger added, to applause from those in the room, “Tell those people I wish I was there and I did this because I love newspapers.”

Media General newspapers will be part of BH Media Group, along with the Omaha World-Herald Co. newspapers. Douglas Hiemstra, the chief operating officer of the Omaha World-Herald Co., has been named president of World Media Enterprises, which will manage the Media General newspapers that BH Media will acquire. Hiemstra told employees Thursday that it has not been the practice of the organization to make any major staff cuts after a purchase. “We will always have to juggle remarkable journalism versus profits, as every newspaper does,” Kroeger said in

It’s all Amelia in James River District track meet By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

The Goochland boys track team capped off a challenging season with a second place finish in last week’s James River District Championships. The competition wrapped up Thursday after several rain delays eventually forced the final running event to be held at Goochland. Apparently, the home field advantage worked for the boys. However, Amelia easily outpaced all of the competitors and left Goochland High School with both the boys and girls titles. Bluestone finished second in the girls’ competition and Goochland sixth. Amelia junior sensation Jasmine Mitchell won the high jump, long jump, triple jump, 100, 400 and 800-meter races and was named James River District track and field Performer of the Year. “She’s probably the best runner in the state in Single A,” Amelia coach Gresham Crane said. “Last year, she won three state championships and was second in a fourth. She’s already placed for six events in this year’s states. She came

in pretty dominant as a ninth grader and hasn’t stopped since then.” Mitchell has the fastest time in the state’s three divisions in the 400 meters. “She’s looking to break the state record in the 400 and possibly the high jump this year,” Crane said.

The Raiders’ John Leder took field event Performer of the Year honors for the boys with wins in the 1,600 and 3,200-meter races. For Amelia, it was a season of riches and Crane expected no less from his squad than the first place finishes.

Bulldogs pull shutout in JRD openers Staff reports

Last week the private schools that play sports in Goochland County got a chance to extend their winning ways in post season play. This week, it’s time for Goochland’s public schools to do the same. If the first day of the James River District Championships is any sign, the Bulldogs could be playing for several more weeks. In Monday night’s JRD openers, Goochland pitched a complete shutout on visiting opponents. The Bulldogs’ baseball, softball and boys soccer teams notched three wins

and did not give up a single score in the process. The Goochland softball team, ranked No. 5 in this week’s TD Top-10, turned in a dominating performance in their 10-0, five-inning win over Nottoway. Jordan Fleming scored three runs for the Bulldogs while Chakiryn Jackson went 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Though the game only went five innings, Goochland pitcher Jackie Tremain struck out nine and gave up two hits in the win. On Wednesday, Goochland hosted Amelia in the JRD

semifinals. With a win the Bulldogs would advance to the district championship, which would be played at Goochland on Friday. While the softball team was making quick work of Nottoway, the Goochland boy’s soccer team was running past visiting Cumberland 7-0. Fernando Ibarra scored twice while Rashid Socarras, Raleigh Marria, Jesse McWilliams, Kevin Adams and Ricky Gordon all connected on goals for the Bulldogs, ranked No. 9 in this week’s TD Top-10. Goal keepers Chris Hawk see Bulldogs >page 17

“They’ve done what I expected them to do,” he said. “We’ve got 13 already qualified for state championships.” A lack of numbers sealed the Bulldogs’ fate early in a week when the team failed to offer athletes in several events, including the high jump. It was a decided disadvantage and an ongoing problem for this year’s squad. “Our numbers were really down this year and we didn’t have enough people to compete in all of the events,” said Goochland coach Henry Jones. Jones had realistic expectations entering the meet, but the results were surprisingly good for a young team fighting such a shortage. “We didn’t know that a second place finish was possible for the boys at the beginning of the season, but they have grown,” the coach said. Junior Harry Talmage finished second in the 400 meter and first in the 800-meter runs. Marcus Houston finished third

in the 3200 and 1600-meter runs. Bradley Clore, Jordan Jefferson, Devin Clark and Zakell Jonson teamed up for a second place finish in the 4x100 relay. Clore also took third place in the 100-meter race while Johnson and Clarke claimed second and sixth in the 200. Goochland claimed a onetwo finish in the discus. Matt Haller easily won with a throw of 145-02, nearly 26-feet further than teammate Kevin Lyda. Sophomore Cephas Harden took third in the 300 hurdles. The girls had some good results also. Erica Herrera, Dashawn Myles, Grace Fralin and Khadijah Waddy won the 4x400 relay. Herrera also won the 300meter hurdles. The Lady Bulldogs got a solid performance in the 3,200 with Ashley Ferguson, Hannah

Lumpkins and Jalen Gregory claiming fourth through sixth. Gregory also finished third in the 1,600 meters while Sydney Pence took fifth in the 800. Jones felt the results reflect the resolve of his young team getting better with each meet. “A lot of these runners are young and we feel good about the progress, but it is a building year,” he said. Errors undo Cadets in VIS championship By Eric Kolenich Media General News Services

If Colton Konvicka could do it all over again, if he could go back in time and fix Benedictine’s mistakes, he’d redo the fourth inning. It was a dreadful frame for the Cadets, who committed two errors and allowed Paul VI to swat six hits and score three runs. It was an inning from which Benedictine (23-8) could not recover, and Paul VI (24-11) beat Benedictine 5-3 Saturday in the VISAA Division 1 state final at Shepherd Stadium in Colonial Heights. “We just had that one bad inning that killed our momentum,” said Konvicka, a Cadet center fielder and pitcher. Konvicka went 1 for 2, drew two walks, stole two bases and scored a run. He also pitched 1 1⁄3 innings of relief and didn’t allow a hit. Cadets coach Sean Ryan called the team’s defensive mistakes “uncharacteristic.”

Benedictine committed four errors in the game. “Our defense hurt us today,” Ryan said. “We threw the ball around, which we don’t do very often.” The Cadets had two chances to get a big inning of their own. In the third, they loaded the bases with one out, but stranded all three runners. In the fourth, they pushed across one run then loaded the bases again. But, again, they left the bags full. The Cadets were 0for-5 with the sacks full and left eight runners on base. “The issue was the missed opportunities,” Ryan said. After accumulating seven hits in the first four innings, Benedictine managed only one in the final three frames. Mark Gunst pitched two hitless innings for Paul VI, picking up the save. Konvicka said his team was trying to do too much. “We just tried to hit six-run home runs,” he said. “Instead, we needed base runners.”

Blake Banet went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs for the Panthers. Reid Leonard hit a double and scored a run for the Cadets.

This was the third time in four seasons that Paul VI eliminated Benedictine from the VISAA playoffs. The Panthers beat Benedictine 6-4 last year

Long, tough season catches up to Cougars Collegiate falls short in VIS championship By Dave Lawrence Special Correspondent

After 19 nail-biters out of 21 games this season, Collegiate was bound to wear down. Unfortunately for the Cougars, fatigue caught up with them in their 22nd game, an improbable appearance in the Virginia Independent Schools’ Division I championship. Seventh-seeded Collegiate fell to fourth seed St. Anne’sBelfield 2-0 Saturday night at Ukrop Park. Saints’ midfielder Kylie Hegemier did all the damage, scoring both goals in a 10-minute span late in the

another good opponent and just kind of lost a little bit of steam at the end. We were tired today, not as crisp, and to play a team this good, you’ve got to be at your best.” St. Anne’s-Belfield coach Mark O’Donnell was not surprised to see either the Saints or Collegiate in the final. “Seedings can be deceiving,” O’Donnell said. “Collegiate is a powerhouse in soccer. They’re well coached. They’re well disciplined. They’ve got a lot of technical skill. I’m actually surprised they were Photo by Dave Lawrence seventh. We

were losing to the No. 1 team.” For the Saints, they were peaking at the right time. “The last three games have been our best games all season,” O’Donnell said. “We finally came together. … We were healthy and played as a team.” The Cougars (12-8-2) started out as aggressive as the Saints (14-2-2). Both teams were physical. “We have some physical players, and so do they,” O’Donnell said. “I figured it was going to be a physical game and as the game wore on, we probably just wore them down a bit.” St. Anne’s proved better able at moving their opponents off the ball. That advantage proved devastat-

ing to Collegiate, especially in the final 20 minutes as the Cougars were scrambling to find ways to equalize. “We denied them any kind of activity in our half and we were able to create stuff. We purposely let them come into us and we wanted to counter. It worked pretty well,” O’Donnell said. “It’s difficult when you’re playing down. There’s a lot more anxiety than when you’re just defending. It’s easier to defend than to create a lot of stuff offensively. I think that take its toll on you.” Neither team seemed shy of contact, and the roughand-tumble play worked well for both teams until the 25th see Collegiate >page 17

continued from >page 16 year’s squad. Ryan Millican, who threw only innings in 20 games, matured into a reliable, dependable ace in 2012. Benedictine fell to only two private schools this year, Paul VI and Steward. The Cadets reached the championship game after a dramatic come from behind victory over St. Christopher’s. For complete story on semifinal game go to www. goochlandgazette.com. Eric Kolenich is a staff writer for the Richmond Times Dispatch.

continued from >page 16 minute. Hegemier found herself with the ball and only a Collegiate keeper and defender between her and the net. “[Taylor Anne Barry] played me the ball over the top and the goalie came out for it,” Hegemier said. “I chopped it back past the goalie and there was no one in the goal so I just shot it in.” The next few minutes were critical to preserve the Saints’ advantage. “I knew the big five minutes – what they call it – when [the opponent] needs to score right after,” Hegemier said. “We need to make sure the other team doesn’t score. That’s what I was thinking.” St. Anne’s-Belfield held out that five minutes, and for another five, when Hegemier, needing no assist, made Collegiate’s task all the more difficult. She worked the ball from midfield down to the right corner, came back toward the middle, then kicked the

ball just out of range of the keeper’s hands into the left wall of the net. Rider was not going to let losing spoil his appreciation for what the Cougars accomplished this season. “A long season, a good run into the playoffs, I’m just so happy to be along for the ride with these girls. They were fantastic,” Rider said. “We worked really hard to get here. It was special. I think you have to work hard not to let that temper the achievement of being here and playing under the lights in the championship.” STAB reached the VIS championship by defeating #1 seed St. Catherine’s in the semifinals. It was the third meeting between the two teams with the Saints winning the previous two.
