Brian Lapkin and Michael Bishop will take to the podium this Friday as Goochland High School seniors graduate at Richmond’s Landmark Theater. Valedictorian Lapkin sports a 4.8 grade point average and is President of the Math Honor Society, Co-Captain of the Goochland Golf Team, a member of the National Honor Society and anchor on the daily news program, NEWS 2. The son of Kimberly and Glen Lapkin, he plans to attend the University of Virginia this fall, majoring in business or political science. Bishop, this year’s salutatorian, achieved a 4.7 grade point average. He is the son of Debbie and Brent Bishop and has one sister, Sarah. He will attend Christopher Newport University in the fall, where he plans a double major in math and history with a minor in anthropology. Then he’ll go after a masters in education and hopes to teach high school. He’s been active in school activities as the 2010-2012 Scholastic Bowl Academic Team Captain, the 2010-2011 French Club President, National Honor Society Treasurer and plays the saxophone in the Jazz Band and Symphonic Band. Bishop has been active at Salem Baptist Church, where he has been the Children’s Church Assistant Leader. He’s also worked on Relay for Life each year from 2009-2011, has volunteered at the Goochland Public Library and the Goochland High School Library Volunteer, and has been a Goochland Marching Band Volunteer. The two young men talked about their future plans and their soon to be finished high school years in a joint interview last Friday. They’ve know each other since pre-school and said there was no rivalry as far as competition for the top academic slot. “It’s a close-knit group,” said Lapkin of the senior class makeup. “Everybody knows everybody. There’s a lot less cliques, there’s definitely a feeling of everybody coming together.”

Valedictorian Brian Lapkin, left, and Salutatorian Michael Bishop are polishing up their addresses for Friday’s graduatiion ceremonies
“I’ve loved getting to know the people in my high school that have become my friends,” wrote Bishop in response to questions from the Gazette. “They have become an integral part of my life, helping to shape me into the person I am today. Without them, I probably would not be in the position I am today.” Lapkin said he is thinking about becoming an attorney but has heard law schools are cutting their class sizes because there’s a glut of lawyers. He’s looking forward to delivering his speech. “I like to think I have a pretty clever idea behind it,” he said. “I enjoy speaking in front of people.”
Bishop said he was still working on his address. He said he is not so comfortable speaking in public but is getting better at it. He spoke at the National Honor Society Induction ceremony. As far as summer plans, Bishop said he will probably hang out with friends and look for a part-time job before heading to college. Lapkin is going to the beach after graduation and later in the summer heads to Paris with his parents. Goochland High School graduation ceremonies will be held Friday, June 1, at 1:00 p.m. at Richmond’s Landmark Theater.
Crash claims life of Goochland man By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
A Goochland man was killed in a single vehicle accident on Memorial Day morning. Delmas Wayne Johnson, 64, of Hadensville Fife Road, was hauling hay trav-
eling east on Route 6 when his 1998 Dodge Ram pickup truck ran off the road near the Goochland Administration Building, said Goochland Sheriff James Agnew. The truck struck a road sign and went through a fence before striking a tree. Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. He was not wearing a seat belt.

Goochland YMCA gets $5,000 grant from CarMax By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Goochland Family YMCA Executive Director Jay Shively is recognized at last week’s reception at CarMax headquarters in Goochland.
The Goochland Family YMCA was one of 22 non-profit organizations to receive a grant last week from the CarMax foundation. In a Wednesday morning reception at the company’s headquarters in West Creek Business Park, CarMax president Tom Folliard announced that the foundation was donating $300,000 to local non-profits, with a focus on education, youth leadership and wellness. The largest sum, $100,000, went to the Enrichment Foundation for the operating expenses of the CarMax Summer Basketball League.
The Goochland YMCA received $5,000 for its Goochland Middle Activity Challenge program, designed to improve academic performance and social skills. “The CarMax grant is critical to the program as this allows the Y to reach and serve more middle school age students in Goochland County who otherwise would not be able to participate without their generous support, said Goochland YMCA Executive Director Jay Shively. The GMAC program outreach program is held during the school year at the Goochland Family YMCA from the closing of school until 5:30 p.m. said Shively. It is the only after-school program

designed for middle school students in Goochland County and serves on average 18 students. Funding from CarMax enables the Y to increase the number of students we serve. During these after-school hours students are more likely to experiment with drugs, alcohol, tobacco and sexual activity. They are more likely to commit crimes or be the victims of crime. There are over 700, 6th to 8th grade students in the county who have limited access to after-school activities, he said. Shively said the grant represents about 16 percent of the GMAC program’s budget.

A new business has opened in Goochland on the site once occupied by the Patterson Drive In Theater. Yard Works, which offers a wide range of “land improvement solutions, cut the ribbon last week at their new location at 12290 Patterson Avenue, just west of Tuckahoe Creek. Chief Operating Officer Robert Urbine said the company had been looking for another location. Formed in 2001, the company has four other locations and manufactures all its own products, he said. Yard Works was granted a Conditional Use Permit in March by the Goochland Board of Supervisors, which required the building of a dike surrounding the three acres of the 14 acre property that will be used for the retail area since the property is in within the flood fringe por-

He urged those present to involve themselves in worthwhile projects such as the Wounded Warrior program or by visiting veterans in hospital. “Actions speak louder than words, he said. In closing Rhode returned to his theme of living for those who do not because of their sacrifice, and of the lost potential of the fallen that must be made up for by those who still live. “We remember them and thank them, by living the lives they cannot, he said. “In living a good life, making the most of what we have and giving back – we honor those who have sacrificed for us, he said. “We earn it.

at the Veterans Monument. The Goochland High School Jazz Chorus delivered a selection of patriotic music. Guest speaker Captain Bryan Rhode, United States Marine Corps veteran, reminded the guests assembled on the Goochland Courthouse Green of what Memorial Day really means. This day, originally called Decoration Day when instituted after the Civil War, is really about two things, said Rhode, a promise and a pledge. The promise is to take care of those who serve when they return and to honor those who do not. The pledge, said Rhode, drawing on a pivotal scene from the popular movie “Saving Private Ryan, is to “earn the sacrifice our men and women in uniform have made for us by living a good life. Rhode urged everyone to get involved in their communities. “Living a good life means giving something back, he explained and issued a challenge to all. “I challenge you to earn it, said Rhode, who earlier spoke about the sacrifice of U.S. Army Captain Kimberly Hampton, the first female pilot killed in Iraq. He also paid tribute to U.S. Marine Corps Maj. Samuel

Helping those who have served when they return Memorial Day is always a somber occasion, and Monday’s observance was no exception. This year American Legion Post 215 chose to focus on women who gave everything for their country. It was an appropriate choice. I doubt many of us knew that more than 100 women have died during the course of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. So it’s fitting to draw attention to their sacrifice. What’s also fitting is to keep in mind all the other men and women who served in what history will likely note as one of the most difficult, yet important episodes in the country’s history – the effort to protect the nation from the terrorist threat made all too clear by the events of Sept. 11, 2001. Now it’s almost 11 years later and the wars are winding down, if not the threat, which is likely to remain with us for decades. And as always, when the public and Congress perceive that a threat to the nation’s security has been contained, the natural impulse is to cut funding for various military and veterans programs. After each war we have a history of cutting military spending, usually too deeply, and then being taken aback when the next threat arises. This is not to say that some reduction in military spending is not in order. Can the services do with fewer ships, planes and tanks and still get the job done? Well, probably – and with the automatic sequester mechanism set up by the debt ceiling deal from last year significant cuts are bound to be made in military spending. But one thing we can’t do without is people, people ready to step up when the next threat comes around, as it surely will some day. Whether or not one backed the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is irrelevant in my mind. Two presidents oversaw these conflicts, one from each party. Regardless of what one thinks about the wisdom of waging these two wars, we should stand by the veterans and support their transition back into civilian life. It won’t be cheap but it needs to be done, to make sure that when the next threat arises, volunteers will again step forward to protect the nation, secure in the knowledge that when they have done the job the country will welcome them back and bind up their wounds. - Ken Odor

His vote is going to Radtke in GOP primary There is a very important Virginia Republican primary election on June 12 when all Republicans should take the time to vote. Low primary voter turnout has been an embarrassment for Goochland in the past, so please take the time to vote on Tuesday, June 12. The polls are open extremely long hours.
Voters have a simple choice between two major Republican candidates who represent either “keep on going like we did under George Bush” or “stop the American hemorrhage of debt, jobs, income, wealth, power, and prestige. George Allen, the smiley faced cowboy boot wearing UVA football star and former Senator under George Bush’s wing would again like to have the prestige, power and pay of being a U. S. Senator. However, I remember
that during George Allen’s former term he quickly became a member of the U. S. Senate “Republican club” and supported most of George Bush’s extravagant spending and U. S. debt accumulation. George will do it again. George Allen is only a late comer to conservative Republican values out of political necessity to get reelected. And it is only Allen’s connections to big see Letters > page 9

During a recent visit to Goochland, United States Department of Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack introduced a proposed loan program targeting beginning farmers, socially disadvantaged farmers and returning veterans. Following a meeting with area farmers on May 23, Vilsack unveiled the new loan program at the Virginia Farm Bureau’s headquarters in West Creek. “I’m proud to say that in the last three years our Farm Service Agency has done a record amount of farm loans, both direct operating loans and ownership loans, as well as guaranteed loans,” Vilsack said. “We’ve helped somewhere in the neighborhood of 120,000 farm families across the country, about 1,500 here in the Commonwealth of Virginia.” However, as the USDA examined its loan program, the department saw a need to develop a small loan program suitable for beginning farmers, socially disadvantaged farmers and returning veterans who wanted to start farming, Vilsack said. “So we’re announcing today the beginning of a process that will lead to the establishment of what we refer to as a micro-loan program at the Farm Service Agency,” Vilsack said. “This micro farm loan program will essentially provide credit up to $35,000.” The new program will make applying for a loan easier, Vilsack said. “Farmers will be able to borrow the money to purchase land or rent land, purchase equipment, rent equipment, purchase new technol-

ogies to make their operation more efficient and it will provide our staff with the capacity to do more work in a more efficient way,” Vilsack said. The new loan program is a proposed rule, Vilsack added. “We will give folks a period of time to comment on the proposed rule,” he said. “We will then finalize it and then it will become operational and our hope is that sometime this summer it’ll be available.” The USDA expects to make about 5,000 loans through the new program, Vilsack said. Socially disadvantaged farmers include AfricanAmericans, Hispanics, Native Americans and women, Vilsack said. Vilsack said there were several reasons that Virginia was chosen as the place to make the announcement. He said the USDA has been working with entities such as Virginia State University to make sure
there is an understanding of the programs offered by the department. Another factor was the Virginia Farm Bureau was willing to provide its “beautiful facility” for the announcement, Vilsack said. “Two, Virginia’s got a diverse agriculture,” Vilsack said. “Not all states have the diversity of agriculture that you have here in Virginia.” The secretary said that some of Virginia’s agricultural diversity is “racial” and other components are what is raised and grown and the size of operations. “You have an expanding interest in local and regional food systems, which will play to the strength of this microloan program,” Vilsack said. Spencer Neale, senior assistant director of commodity marketing for the Virginia Farm Bureau, said Wayne Pryor, the organization’s president and a Goochland
farmer, was out of town and could not be present for Vilsack’s visit. Neale said it was an honor for the Virginia Farm Bureau, which represents about 80 percent of farmers across the commonwealth, to host Vilsack. “I think the program he’s rolling out is very exciting for a lot of farmers,” Neale said. T.J. Isbell, a third-generation producer with the Keen Bell Farm in western Hanover County on the Goochland County line, had the opportunity to attend the closeddoor meeting with Vilsack, along with other area farmers and state and federal officials. “It was nice to be able to hear him speak and have the interaction with all the producers here today and it’s just really exciting to be able to have him here in Virginia,” Isbell said.

The new building consists of all types of photo displays and we will have music displays in the new building.” The event is free, with fish dinners for sale. Donations will be accepted for upkeep to the blacksmith shop, Bruce said. “The main purpose of the event is just, like we say, an appreciation of our heritage to just steadily kind of increase all of our knowledge of history,” Bruce said. “Basically with our music displays, we’ll be talking about a lot of people within the community who have a very vast and broad founda-
tion with their music.” Maintaining Jackson Blacksmith Shop is a way to preserve part of Goochland’s history, Bruce said. “It shows how valuable things can be right here within the community,” he said. “You don’t have to just look at television or wherever and see how valuable things are. You have a lot valuable things right here at you – a lot of knowledge, a lot of just resources to history right here within the community.” Saturday’s event is slated to begin at 1 p.m. and last “until,” Bruce said. Goochland’s School Board transferred funds to pay the settlement for departed superintendent Linda Underwood last week and voted to contract with national search firm BWP and Associates to help find her replacement. The board voted to move $99,924.49 from Elementary instruction to Administration, Health and Attendance to cover the severance agreement with Underwood. This transfer must also be approved by the Goochland Board of Supervisors. Later in the week the board issued a press release emphasizing its desire to gather input from Goochland residents on the qualifications needed in a new superintendent. “Community engagement is a very important part of this process,” said Beth Hardy, School Board Chairwoman. “There is no more important decision we will make than select-
ing the right superintendent for our school district,” wrote Hardy. “We are requesting assistance by inviting members of both the Goochland school community and members of the broader Goochland community to participate in stakeholder meetings and open community forums in an organized series of meetings.” The school board plans a community forum at Goochland High School on Wednesday, June 6 from 6 to 7 p.m. to hear from residents on the superintendent search. The board has also created a community survey, Finding a Leader for Our Future, which will be available at all meetings, in the schools, and local libraries. The survey will also be available on the school system website (www. glnd.k12.va.us) beginning June 4 through June 15. The school board also adopted a resolution affirming its commitment to Freedom of Information laws, with the understanding that a pending lawsuit against a former school board member would be dropped as a result. “I am pleased that with the

May 22, 2012 passage of a resolution, the Goochland County School Board has affirmed that, going forward, it will strive to comply with the letter and spirit of the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA),” wrote Michael McDermott in an email to the Gazette. “As I explained in my lawsuit, former members of the School Board violated FOIA first when School Board members met in private in Williamsburg, Virginia on November 17,
2010, apparently to discuss official business involving the Goochland Education Foundation, and second, on May 24, 2011, when, rather than declare its intention to enter into a closed session, the School Board took a break from its public meeting and, during that break, apparently decided to remove from the agenda a vote on the FY20112012 budget,” wrote McDermott, who announced that he was voluntarily dropping his lawsuit.
Goochland farm owners win environmental stewardship award Contributed Report
Mr. and Mrs. Alexander M. Fisher, Jr. (Sandy and Rossie), of Brookview Farm in Goochland County, have won the 2012 Cynthia Pratt Laughlin Medal, a National award presented by the Garden Club of America for outstanding achievement in environmental protection and the maintenance of the quality of life.
Sandy and Rossie have been pioneers in organic, sustainable farming in the mid-Atlantic since establishing Brookview in 1981 as a grass-fed and finished- cattle commercial farming operation. Family-owned and operated, Brookview comprises over 300 acres of pasture on which cattle roam and graze exclusively on grass and clover. File photo

Fisher continued from > page 10 In nominating the Fishers for the award, the James River Garden Club said “Brookview epitomizes the highest standards of environmental stewardship, producing all organic products without the use of pesticides, hormones and commercial fertilizers. Among all of the competition around the country, Brookview’s example
should make Virginian’s proud of the standards our state is setting in agricultural advancement.” A primary goal at Brookview has been to educate the community on the importance of agricultural sustainability, as well as teaching responsible and humane farming practices. As public awareness of the benefits of best practices in agriculture and land stewardship has
increased, the Fishers have seen many of their pioneering methods adopted and expanded by others in Virginia and beyond. Having placed Brookview in a conservation easement to protect it from future development, the Fishers helped establish the Goochland Land Alliance in 2002 to educate others on the benefits of conservation easements. Goyne closes door on Chatham in regional win Brookman produces on the mound and at the plate By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com
Goochland senior pitcher Austin Goyne escaped a seventh inning jam to pick up a save as the Bulldogs downed visiting Chatham 5-4 in the Region B, Division 2 quarterfinals on Monday evening. Chatham and Goochland came into the game with the strategy of using their #2 pitcher and save their aces for the regional semifinal on Wednesday. The plan almost backfired on both teams as Goyne and Cavalier senior Bradley Haymes looked brilliant one moment and vulnerable in their final inning on the mound. “We just came out on the high end of that,” said Goochland coach Wes Farkas. “Austin struggled in the seventh and it looked like their guy got a little flustered, walked one and almost got a run in. A little bit of a hiccup for those two guys that are definitely dominant when they’re on.” Goyne came to the mound in relief of right-hander Chase Brookman with two out and a runner in scoring position in the top of the fifth inning, then dominated the first four batters he faced, notching two strikeouts and a pair of easy groundouts for the Bulldogs. But things went awry in the top of the seventh. Clinging to a tenacious 5-4 lead, the VMI committed lefty walked two of the first three batters he faced, then saw both advance on a loose ball behind the plate. “When I got second and third with one out, my nerves were pumping,” Goyne said. “My adrenaline was going a

little bit.” The potential tying and gohead runners only stayed in Goyne’s thoughts briefly. “It is when I’m walking back to the mound but once I step on the mound everything clears and I just focus on the batter,” he said. With the two Cavalier runners in scoring position, Goyne bounced back to close the game in style, striking out Jody Mulero, then quickly getting two strikes on Joey Cline. “When I struck the second to last kid out I knew I had the situation under control a little bit more,” Goyne said. “Then when I got the two strikes on the last batter. I knew I could put him away with my changeup because that’s been my out pitch all year. When my pitching coach called it, I knew the game was going to be over.” Goyne got Cline to swing on his changeup to seal the Goochland win on a passed ball. Brookman appeared more relieved than anyone. “I’m going to keep thanking him for getting the save,” he said of Goyne closing the game. “That got me the win for tonight. He
did a great job. He’s done a great job all year.” For his part, Brookman started off strong on the mound with three strikeouts and a walk and no hits in the first two and two-thirds innings of work. But the near triple-digit temperatures began to take their toll. “Starting and everything I felt great but about the third inning the sun just started sucking the life out of me,” he said. Brookman gave up his second walk of the day to Stanley Shelton which set the stage for Chatham to score it’s first run of the game when Haymes doubled to the center field fence. Next up, Travis Younger singled to right driving in Haymes. But fortune smiled on Brookman when an inside pitch caused Molero to duck but instead of hitting Molero, the ball made contact with the bat and caromed into fair territory creating an easy force out to escape the inning. Mental mistakes by the Bulldogs led to Chatham adding runs in the fourth and fifth to pull within one and set up

the final dramatics. Brookman made up for any slip on the mound with his performance at the plate where he went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a RBI. Three games back from a hamstring injury, Brookman made the most of his offensive chances against Cavalier starter Zack Potojecki’s pitches. “He was just leaving fast balls over the plate for me,” Brookman said. “He didn’t get ahead of me. He was always throwing the first pitch ball or the second pitch ball and then he would have to come back with a fast ball.” Goochland jumped ahead 3-0 in the bottom of the second after Forrest Witt (2-for-3, run) led off with a punch shot to right. Scott Pearce singled and Trace Nixon took a pitch in the square of his back to load the bases. Witt came home on Josh Driver’s groundout to second. Pinch runner Jess McLaughin and Nixon then scored on Cole Starke’s (3-for3, 2-RBI, run) shot to left. When Chatham closed the
margin to 3-2 in the top of the third, Brookman answered with a lead off double down left field line. Pinch runner Colby Noel pushed the Bulldogs lead back to 4-2 while Chatham was distracted by Witt’s dribbler toward third. When Brookman returned to the plate in the bottom of the fourth he connected once again, driving a shot to the left center fence that plated Starke for a 5-3 Goochland lead. Brookman admits he is still only about 75 percent back with his running. “It really doesn’t matter if you put it to the fence,” he laughed. Ironically the win over Chatham was not only Goochland’s first career victory against the Cavaliers but also the Bulldogs’ first nondistrict win of the season. “Our record against Chatham since I’ve been here, the last 11 years is I think 0-5, 0-6,” Farkas said. “This is a big win for us just to actually get that monkey off our back to beat a good Chatham team.
That felt really good.” Goyne agreed. “We were 07 all year against non-district teams and this is the first team we beat, but I knew we could do it,” he said. “We just didn’t really come to play in those other games. Today we came to play.” Most important, Farkas was pleased with how his team responded in the face of adversity. “We had a couple mistakes that ended up costing us one or two runs,” Farkas said. “But a credit to our guys, we hung in there and made plays when we had to.” On Friday night, Goochland won the JRD tournament title in similar dramatic fashion, coming back from four down in the fifth inning to take the championship 8-4 over Randolph-Henry. “That was a fun game to be a part of,” Farkas said. “Our guys could have just laid down, but we kind of got a hit parade there. Bulldogs battle Raiders and heat for regional win
Goochland boys advance to Region B semifinals By Dave Lawrence Special Correspondent
The heat looked like it was taking its toll on the Goochland boy’s soccer team in the first half of the Region B quarterfinals on Monday evening. Players fell down and were slow to get up. Others were injured and had to be helped off the field. Frequent substitutions were necessary. But after a scoreless first half, the Bulldogs, led by freshman forward Ricky Gordon with a goal and an assist, found the strength to score two goals in a 15-minute span and senior keeper Chris Hawk stopped a furious Appomattox counterattack as Goochland advanced to the Region B semifinals with a 2-0 victory over the Raiders. Goochland will travel to Clarke County for a 7 p.m. semifinal Wednesday. The Eagles defeated Stuarts Draft 3-1 Monday. “We subbed a lot, particularly because of the heat,” said Goochland coach Eric Albright. “In the first half we had a lot of guys get banged up. The heat made it worse.” Despite the heat and injuries, the Bulldogs maintained an aggressive attack throughout the 80 minutes on the field – that aggression may have
hurt their offensive prospects. “We got a lot of offsides calls against us,” Albright said. “That stopped a lot of [breakaways]. It kind of makes it hard. But the ones we did get – we had a good number, as many as you’re going to get in a soccer game – we capitalized on a couple of them.” Gordon felt an adjustment at halftime made a big difference. “One of our big points in the second half was to get more opportunities on net,” he said. “We went out and executed … Just trying to think before you passed. Look up and look where you’re passing before you play the ball.” The change paid off for him nine minutes into the second half. Defender Kevin Adams fed the ball to Gordon as he broke through the Raiders’ defense. Gordon kicked it past Appomattox keeper Tyler Marshall for the game’s first score. Appomattox coach Travis O’Brien felt Gordon’s goal was a turning point. “I think any time, any game you play, if you’re the first to strike, to put something on the scoreboard, it’s an important part of the game,” O’Brien said. “Momentum is a big thing in any game you play, regardless

of whether it’s soccer, baseball or softball. Momentum is huge. I know my kids feed off of that a lot. It was a big break for Goochland.” While the Raiders were busy trying to equalize, they left themselves open for more damage in the 63rd minute. “We made a mistake on the back end on defense – didn’t get back and allowed the second goal,” O’Brien said. Seizing the opportunity, Gordon fed the ball to freshman forward Francisco Ibarra, who kicked a hard, high shot at Appomattox keeper Tyler Marshall. Marshall hit the ball high in the air, but its top spin carried it back toward the net. “I was thinking bounce faster, go faster, get in the net,” Gordon said. “I saw the ball go upwards and it kept getting
smaller. I figured it was going toward the goal. It just kept going.” As the ball hit the ground, Marshall scrambled after it, but by the time he stopped its momentum, he and the ball were both in the net. Most of the action in the final 20 minutes took place on Goochland’s side, however. Following the Bulldogs’ first goal, the Raiders did their utmost to crack the Goochland defense. They failed to convert penalty kicks in the 57th and 83rd minutes. They took a flurry of shots in the 61st, 65th and 83rd minutes as well. “I was about to die out there. It got real hot,” Hawk said. “I was thinking, ‘Be over. Come on, clock, get down.’ I was ready for it to stop.” Hawk and his fellow
Bulldog defenders held firm. “I give all the credit to my team, hustling the whole time,” Hawk said. “I was just sitting back there to get the trash.” Albright gave Hawk more credit. “Chris Hawk has been with the team for four years. He’s a captain, he’s been captain for two years,” Albright said. “He’s an unbelievable keeper. He plays year-round. Back there, he’s as light on his feet as I’ve seen any keeper. He moves instinctively.” The regional opening win was a good follow up after the Bulldogs claimed the James River District championship on Friday evening. Gordon, Ibarra, Jace Gregory and Javier Moreno all scored in Goochland’s 4-1 tournament title win over Amelia.
Ibarra joined seniors Nick Yuen and Jesse McWilliams to earn JRD First Team honors. Gordon along with seniors Richard Young and Rashid Soccaras were named to the Second Team while freshman Raliegh Marria received Honorable Mention status. Hawk was named the JRD Second Team keeper and Buckingham’s Bobby Dandridge was honored as Player of the Year. Lady Bulldogs shake off rust to down Raiders 5-1 Goochland 2nd half explosion leads to Region B rout BY JP BEAUCHAMP Special Correspondent
The Goochland girl’s soccer team overcame a long layoff and slow start to eventually break away from visiting Appomattox 5-1 in the Region B quarterfinals on Monday afternoon. After having come out on top in the James River District regular season, the Lady Bulldogs sat on the sidelines and waited last week while all other GHS sports played in district tournaments. Because there are a limited number of JRD girl’s soccer teams, they do not play a league championship. Therefore Goochland had to shake off the rust when they faced a tenacious Raiders opponent. Play between the two demonstrated the intensity found at the regional level of play. Freshman forward Sidney Alvis attested to the physical intensity of the game. “They played really rough; and we just kept up the momentum and kept scoring. It was just a good game all around for us.” Goochland head coach Tom Reid came into the contest with a simple strategy. “Play good defense and keep the ball on our side of the field,” he said. “We played several games where we were overall a defensive team, but we kept the ball on our side of the field. That’s our goal, is to win by control, possession of the ball; control, possession of the ball.” Along those lines there were no surprises. “They played like I expected,” Reid said. “They played great. They really did. They put out a good team effort.”

Above: Goochland sophomore middie Mesa Willis, left, works the ball against the defense of Raiders’ middie Amber Gilliam (2). Both Alvis and Willis scored against Appomattox.
The Bulldogs scored their only goal of first period minutes into the game when Alvis connected from the left side of the box off an assist from senior forward Bridget Panas. Getting her team on the board gave Alvis some satisfaction. “It felt good,” she said. Although the Bulldogs demonstrated better overall control of play, the Raiders’ defense was resilient in rebuffing Goochland’s attempts to widen the gap. Appomattox keeper Libby Williamson came up with eight saves in the process. At the same time, Panas was instrumental in keeping the pressure on the Raiders’ defense. “I think we did good with talking our passes,” she said. “At the beginning of the game we were a little rough; but we definitely picked up the pace in the second half.” The Raiders held their
own and were finally able to respond nine minutes into the second period when junior Faith Walton found the middle of the net from 7-meters out center field, tying the contest 1–1. However, once the score was tied the Bulldogs ramped up the pressure. On a short pass from freshman defender Madison Engel, Alvis found center net again just right of Williamson from 8-meters out. Alvis’ second goal seemed to break open a Bulldog flood. “After the second goal, we started getting the momentum and going, and the goals just kept coming from there,” Panas said. With the game clock showing less than eight minutes of play, Alvis crossed the ball to sophomore middie Mesa Willis, who punched it in from midfield 7-meters out, to put
the Bulldogs up 3-1. Moments later Goochland junior midfielder Kayla Cleveland raised the tally on a hard high kick from center field that drove into the net through Williamson’s hands. Cleveland was shocked by the goal. “It was amazing [to score],” she said. “Normally, I’m not the one that makes the goals. Normally, I’m just kind of passing them out there. But it was…’Oh my God’, it was awesome. It was kind of a mistake. Mesa just passed it off to me and I just kind of kicked it. I didn’t think it was really going to go in. It just happened to.” The Bulldogs added a final goal inside the two minute mark when junior defender Christina Mills scored from inside the box dribbling it past the keeper. Mills was also instrumental as a defender disrupting the Raiders’ attempts to threaten Goochland keeper Jessie Short,
who had two saves for the day. “Christina has always come through,” Reid said. The Lady Bulldogs advance to the Region B semifinals and will travel to George Mason High School for a 7 p.m. matchup on Wednesday, May 30. Goochland dominated the JRD post season awards with 12 players being named to either the first or second team. Seniors Amberly Marria, Brooke Engel and Panas,
juniors Christina Mills and Kayla Cleveland, sophomores Jessie Short and Willis joined Alvis on the JRD First Team. Senior Kelsey Simmons, junior Dana Rodriguez, sophomore Abbie Robinson and freshman Elizabeth Falconer were Second Team selections. Bulldog softball bounces back in regional opener By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
On Monday evening, freshman Jackie Tremain recorded two hits and three RBIs to lead the Goochland softball team (20-2) to a 7-0 win over visiting Central Woodstock in the first round of the Region B softball playoffs. Tremain doubled off Central starter Mary Wakeman in the first inning, scoring two runs, and added a triple in the sixth inning. The right-hander also came on in relief of Goochland starter Kaytlyn Jones and pitched three innings of shutout softball for the Bulldogs. “That’s the way we’ve been doing it all year long, said Goochland coach Amy Henneberger. “Using a left hander and then coming in with a right hander gives the opposition two different looks. Tremain knew a hit meant a run when she came to bat in the first. “I was just looking for something that I could drive, she said referring to her two RBI double in the first. However, her sixth inning triple was more contrived. “I saw them moving in and decided to try and hit it over her head, Tremain said. After going up 2-0 in the first inning, the Bulldogs exploded for four runs in the third. It was all they needed with the strong
Goyne
pitching and effective defense. “We did everything right today, Henneberger said. “We played good defense and hit the ball well. Pitching and base running were all good. I hope we can keep it up for the next game. Tremain and her teammates handled almost triple-digit heat and a determined Falcon squad that never got started. Third baseman Jordan Fleming felt the regional quarterfinal win was just what the team needed. “It’s a great start for us in the regionals and it was good just to come out and hit the ball, Fleming said. “We just have to play our game like we know we can and we did that today. For the Falcons, the frustration mounted as the innings progressed, and the visitors were never able to solve Bulldog pitching. “We just didn’t play well today, said Falcon coach Marty Bundrick. “We came out flat and it never got any better. The Bulldogs showed no ill signs of a disappointing loss in the James River District championship game on Friday night. Facing Central Luneburg for the JRD title, the Bulldogs were limited to three hits but paid the price for committing a single error on defense. A failed double-play attempt allowed Central to score the only run of
in the Region B semifinals continued from >page 14 and Farkas feels there is just one area the Bulldogs need to and tacked on runs and they improve upon. “For us it’s really focus, couldn’t stop us. In the game, Pearce was 2- he said. “At this point in the for-3 with a double and two season, we’ve really got to be RBI. Alex McDowell was 2-for- focused on that one game. You 4 with a run and a RBI, Witt can’t be looking past your next was 3-for-4 with two runs and opponent. I think that’s where an RBI and Cody Johnson was you lose a little bit of focus. “The top of the lineup 2-for-3 with a double and two hit real well tonight. We just runs for the Bulldogs. On Wednesday at 5 p.m. need to get more production Goochland hosts Appomattox from the middle of our lineup,
the game and hand Goochland its first district loss of the season. “We put that behind us tonight, Henneberger said. “We wanted to score a lot of runs tonight. Tremain was named JRD Pitcher of the Year and Henneberger Coach of the Year. Amelia’s Jamie Barbour earned Player of the Year honors. Juniors Taylor Scruggs, Jordan Fleming and Chakiryn Jackson joined sophomores Brandi Tester and Katlyn Jones along with Tremain on the JRD First Team. Sophomore Ericka Spencer was a Second Team selection at first base and sophomore pitcher Katlyn Jones an Honorable Mention. The Bulldogs advance to the Region B semifinals to host Stuarts Draft at 5 p.m. Wednesday, May 30. Photos by Jim Ridolphi It’s the team’s second straight Crawling across second base, Goochland’s Jesse Leroy, left, holds on to get a force on Central’s regional semifinal appearance Caitlin Cummins (13) in the Region B quarterfinals on Monday. and Henneberger is hoping to advance further in 2012. “We got this far last year, so hopefully we can take it a step further — or two or three or four.
