Acting Superintendent of Schools Peter Gretz announced last week that Sandra Crowder, current Coordinator for Gifted and Talented Services for the Hanover County school system, has been selected as the new principal of Randolph Elementary School. Crowder was introduced at the regular school board meeting along with her husband Michael. She has 20 years of classroom experience and has also worked as an
assistant principal, said Gretz in his introduction. “I am so excited about this opportunity,” Crowder told the school board members. “I can’t wait to get back into a school building with those little ones again.” Before taking her latest position as Coordinator for Gifted and Talented Services in July, 2010, Crowder served as Acting Assistant Principal at John M. Almost 30 teams took part in the Goochland 2012 Relay for Life celebration last Friday evening, ringing the track at Goochland Elementary School. Co-chair Amanda Taylor, who along with her sister Beth Gentry directed this year’s effort in honor
of their mother, Scarlett Browning, who died of breast cancer at age 44 in 1996, said they had raised more than $42,000 of their $62,000 fundraising goal as of Friday at 5 p.m. As always, one of the highpoints of the evening was the survivors lap, held right after the opening ceremonies. One participant in the lap was Harris L. Diggs, a 35-year cancer

Most people quit working long before they’re 90, but not Ruth Marshall. Marshall turned 90 on June 6, about a week after school was out for Goochland County Public Schools. She’s been working in food service for the school system since 1969. While she hasn’t decided if she’ll go back to work in the fall, Marshall said, “I would love to. Yeah I would.” Marshall took time out from her birthday party on Saturday to reminisce about her career in food service. She said she was the food service manager at Goochland Elementary School for 30 years and she has spent the last 13 years working at Goochland High School. “All the children called me ‘Grandma,’” Marshall said. “I didn’t care. It didn’t bother me.” Elementary pupils tend to be “quieter,” Marshall said, adding that the high school students are “wilder.” Marshall lives in the Goochland Courthouse area and is driven the two miles to work each day by her daughter, Bonnie Carter. Marshall said she hasn’t driven since she had her legs operated on. The food she served when she first started in food service was better, Marshall said, because she and her co-workers did all the cooking. “We just warm stuff up,” Marshall said of the current method of preparing food. School lunch prices have gone up over the years and

a lunch now costs students $2.25, Marshall said. She said sometimes she thinks the food is worth the price and, “Sometime I don’t.” Students have confided in her over the years, Marshall said, telling her about their problems. “Yes they do,” she said, “and I tell them mine too.” Pearl Parrish, 84, said she worked with Marshall in food service for 12 years. “She was all right,” Parrish said of Marshall. “She was a good worker. Little mischief at times, but we all got that way.” Parrish said she enjoyed working with Marshall “cause she’s funny.” Marshall said she enjoys the camaraderie with her coworkers.
“Yes I do, yeah,” she said. “I think it’s getting a little rough now, yeah.” Marshall said she gets up at 5:30 a.m. and has to be at work by 8 a.m. She said she gets off work at 2:30 p.m. Her primary duties include “cooking, making salads, fixing the dessert,” Marshall said. When she gets home from working at the school, she does work around the house, Marshall said. She also takes a nap. “You run all day long, you need a nap,” Marshall said. Marshall has four children, five grandchildren, 10 greatgrandchildren and one greatgreat grandchild. She said she didn’t think she would live to be 90. “No I didn’t,” Marshall said. “I just didn’t think so.”
But she said she’s in pretty good health, enjoys working in her yard and feels pretty good for 90. Sherrie Balsley, one of Marshall’s two granddaughters, said “it makes me feel good that [Marshall] still has determination.” Peyton Worrell, 11, a rising 6th-grader at Pocahontas Middle School in Powhatan, also is impressed that his great-grandmother is still working. “When I’m 90, I’m probably going to be shriveled up in a bed watching soap operas,” Peyton said. “She can make it this far, I think she can keep going until she wants to quit.” Although she hasn’t been 90 for long, Marshall said one good thing about her age is that, “I’m still going I guess.”

Ware takes Benedictine dean post By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Del. Lee Ware, R-Powhatan, will become academic dean at Benedictine College Preparatory School this summer, said the school’s headmaster Jesse Grapes last week. Ware has had a 31-year teaching career in history and government, the last 13 at Blessed Sacrament Huguenot in Powhatan County. “Lee will lead our academic program for Benedictine’s second century of education, soon to be in Goochland County,” said Grapes in an email to the Gazette. Later in the week Grapes elaborated on his announcement. “Education for boys needs to be rigorous, whether they want it or not,” he said. Grapes said he favored a more ‘classical approach,” where the emphasis is on teaching students to think logically and said Ware shares his outlook on education. Grapes said Ware’s service on
Benedictine’s Board of Trustees had been impressive. “He is widely respected by the school,” said Grapes. The academic dean position Ware will assume was created last year and is currently held by an interim dean. Ware will also teach some government classes, said Grapes. In an interview Friday, Ware said it is an honor taking on the post. “It seemed like a natural progression of my academic career and a wonderful opportunity,” he said after wrapping up his last official day at Blessed Sacrament. “It’s going to be a new challenge but a real opportunity to put into practice things that I’ve looked at and been part of as a teacher for three decades now.” Ware’s 65th District includes all of Powhatan, and parts of Chesterfield, Goochland and Fluvanna counties. He intends to continue to serve in the legislature in his new job.

Del. Lee Ware talks with Goochland officials last fall about the 2012 General Assembly.
Ware has served in the General Assembly since 1998 and is a former Chairman of the Powhatan County Board of Supervisors. He taught at Powhatan High School for 15 years before moving to Blessed Sacrament. Benedictine plans to relocate to Mary Mother of the Church Abbey in Goochland, but Ware said that would not fall within his district. For more than a year, the former Benedictine High
School has been working to move its academic campus to the abbey, where its athletic fields have been for a decade. Benedictine College Preparatory has been on North Sheppard Street in Richmond’s Museum District for 100 years. The move to Goochland was planned for August but has been pushed back to January. Richmond Times-Dispatch Staff Writer Olympia Meola contributed to this report.

Sixteen months of chemotherapy dropped Diggs, a tall man, from 195 to 145 pounds. “They never say you’re cured they say you’re in remission,” said Diggs, who credits Dr. Susan Merlett and God for his recovery. “God first,” he emphasized. He also gave credit to his future wife Cynthia and his fraternity brothers for helping him continue his schooling during his treatment. Sluuuurp! That’s the sound of me sucking the very last drop from the bottom of my Big Gulp last week! Well, figuratively, at least. Fact is, I don’t think I could down an entire beverage of that size anymore. But the word out of New York City, where billionaire Mayor Bloomberg made international news by declaring war on giant-sized sugary drinks was almost enough to move me to stop in and buy one just in protest! Bloomberg has been the butt of many a cartoon, comedian’s joke and general derision since his announcement that the The Big Apple was considering banning behemoth soft drinks. It’s almost too easy to make fun of a politician who actually spends government time and money in such a ludicrous fashion. But the unfunny part is that, knowing the political climate in New York and similar environs, the honorable mayor is likely to be successful in banning the deadly drinks. Now I’m not advocating that folks go on a super-size soft drink binge in protest against the mayor’s certainly well-intentioned effort to improve the health of The Big Apple’s citizens. Most of us with basic knowledge of nutrition have likely long since decided to forego such sugary excess, just as many of us probably exercise more and strive to eat a balanced diet. After all, we’re not fools! But that’s just the point. Folks like Mayor Bloomberg seem to think the general population is made up of folks who don’t have enough sense to make reasonable decisions about how to live, what to eat and drink - you name it. Thus requiring government at all levels to step in and save us from ourselves. Once started down this road, when do we stop? Maybe the next step would be to monitor the size of the bagels sold in New York. Lotsa starch in those babies, right? Crave a beefsteak? Probably could use a city reg limiting the number of ounces of red meat you can get at posh New York eateries so as not to clog up the arteries. Where and when does it end? Only when folks in government realize that it’s not their job to micromanage every facet of human behavior, not their job to make sure no one ever makes a bad decision. Governments, once addicted to wielding the power to make such decisions will inevitably be tempted someday to use that power to limit more fundamental individual freedoms, like freedom of speech - for our own good, of course. So - keep your hands off my Big Gulp, Mr. Mayor man. - Ken Odor

Gallery owners Glenn and Jan Dankos didn’t know exactly what to expect last Saturday, as they waited to see what the turnout would be for the grand opening of the Goochland Art Center. Would there be a mob? Or just a trickle of folks? By 5 p.m. the verdict was in, as about 150 visitors had already arrived to view the 160 or so pieces on display at the four separate galleries spread about the Town and Country Shops on Route 522.
The show featured Goochland artist Andre’ Lucero, newcomer Betty Rowe and international artist Christaphora Robeers, with pieces hanging in the main gallery and also at Hands-On Physical Therapy and the White Hawk Music Cafe’. Dankos, himself a sculptor with several of his pieces on display, said he got the idea of opening a gallery after the tanning salon closed and left him with some extra room. “I decided to do something different after the tanning salon moved out,” he said. Dankos said about 10
Goochland artists took part in the show, which will be open for the next six weeks. Richmond photographer Bill Harrison was excited about the new gallery. “I think it’s a cool idea,” he said, “having it all over the shopping center.” Goochland supervisor Manny Alvarez and his wife Grace were also impressed. “I love this,” said Manny. “The idea of having an art gallery in Goochland.” Christaphora Roberts, who is originally from Holland and now lives in Mechanicsville, praised

Recent Longwood graduate Betty Rowe had a reception and solo show in the aptly named Route 522 Gallery in the rear of the main building. Rowe, who works mostly in acrylic, showed the 10 pieces she used as her senior project at Longwood, entitled “What’s Important to Goochland.” It featured familiar scenes such as the group of regulars

Third graders Keeley Shoemaker (with camera) and classmates Katherine Wright and Caroline Webb examine one of the four raised bed gardens in the courtyard at Randolph E. S. The three girls are members of Jennifer Gates’ class, which came up with the idea of building the gardens where they grew a variety of vegetables this year and harvested some that were served up in salads in the school cafeteria. Gates said Southern States contributed top soil and kindergarten teachers and students started seeds for the gardens. Goochland Schools Maintenance Chief Sonny Turner built the beds, said Gates. The courtyard at Byrd E.S. was the inspiration for the RES project, said Gates. A greenhouse is planned in the future. For 30 years, she cared for and healed patients in need at the Hunter Holmes McGuire VA Hospital. She was a brilliant diagnostician (“I just like detective

LAKE ANNA - WATER FRONT HOME
Raymond finds hope By Tim Davis news@goochlandgazette.com
Elliott and Brenda Hope drove out to Elk Hill Farm in rural Goochland County for one reason. “We wanted to put a little joy back in Raymond’s life, says Elliott. Raymond Biddle has never been happier. On this day, he and his new foster parents, drive home together as one family. They call him their “son. He calls them “Mom, and “Dad. Raymond throws his arms around his new parents. He’s over six feet tall. He jokes and smiles, and it’s hard to imagine, that up until recently, Raymond has never felt this much joy.
Born in Philadelphia to divorced parents, he lived with his mother until age five, when she died of a brain tumor. Then he went to live with his father, who, by the time Raymond was 13, passed away from liver cancer. With nowhere else to go, he was placed in a foster home for a while, and then relocated to live with a relative in Contirubted Photo by Tim Davis Virginia. Raymond Biddle with his new family Elliott and Brenda Hope. In that home, Raymond says he didn’t feel welcomed But things were no better basically I just gave up. to Philadelphia—it was clear or loved. His sense of isosomething had to be done. when he returned. He ran away three times, lation grew and he began “I thought no one on this and on his third attempt— spending time with “the see Raymond > page 14 wrong crowd. As a result, he earth liked me anymore. So, making it all the way back resided at a detention center briefly, where the hard life there, he says, taught him a lesson.

Raymond’s parole officer and social worker intervened and found him a place at the group home and day school at Elk Hill, which has served troubled youth for over 41 years from all over central Virginia. They offer counseling, specialized education and loving support to help kids, like Raymond, feel safe, begin to untie some of their emotional pain and help them find the confidence and tools they need for success in life. Raymond gained a new sense of calm from the surrounding nature—something completely new for him. Also, his teachers, at the Harambee Day School, provided a confidence-boosting academic experience he’d never known before. He describes how they patiently clarified the problems he didn’t understand, and then made certain that he got it. He says, “I’m really glad I’m at
Harambee. Passing in the hallways of Harambee, he met Michelle Trent, an Elk Hill administrative assistant, who he says was “like a mother to him. She recalls how quiet he was a first, but after six months, she says: “He just blossomed like a flower into this amazing kid. Meeting the Hopes A few weeks before Christmas, Trent invited Raymond, as her guest, on a church outing to Virginia Beach for the holiday lights festival. She had also invited her sister-in-law, Brenda, and Brenda’s husband, Elliott, who eight years ago lost their only two children – sisters who died eight months apart. “We have seen things a lot people haven’t seen, says Elliott Hope. “It was so hard to bury our children. I was so sad, I didn’t know if I was going or coming. And my wife was in worse shape than me. Michelle says the Hopes had

been the best parents, and had talked about wanting another child, but not necessarily a baby. That night they met him standing under the Christmas lights. To Brenda, he seemed friendly, sweet, and “such a humble young man. Elliott and his wife talked about it the following morning. Since they had no children, and Raymond needed a family, Elliott suggested, “Maybe we can get together and make it work. That day, they met Raymond again at Michelle’s church for a Christmas dinner. Michelle says it was “love at first sight “We talked, recalls Brenda, “and asked was he interested in having a family. He said he definitely was and we started making phone calls to see what we had to do. “Just hearing: Do you want to be a part of our family? It really brought everything [home] to me, says Raymond. He said his courage level went up and he started to feel happy. He got his grades up. He began
using his home passes to visit the Hopes. The first time he stayed the night, he awoke to find Mrs. Hope looking at him. “I was like, ‘Aw, hey mom. Hey, how you doing?’ he says. Michelle describes them as “three peas in a pod. Bringing Raymond in, “just makes their life like whole. They love him unconditionally. “So that’s why we went through all what we went through, says Elliott, “to try to make it better for him. And I say, you know, God gave us second chances. You know, brother, we’re going to give him another chance. What’s Raymond going to do with his second chance? This summer, as part of Elk Hill’s job training program, he plans to help out with the kids at their six-week camp. He wants to go to college and play basketball. After everything Raymond and the Hopes endured, Elliott sums it up by pointing to his son, saying: “This is the blessing we got.

Goochland Parks & Rec Upcoming Events By Ben Orcutt Special Correspondent
Goochland County Parks, Recreation & Facilities Management has a wide array of activities and events scheduled for this summer and fall. “Well, we’re rolling out summer camp right now,” said Derek Stamey, department director.“We have so many of them.” Michelle Swalin, recreation manager for GCPRFM, said there are 22 camp programs, featuring 29 week sessions that run over a 10-week period through Aug. 17. “We kind of divide them into three categories,”Stamey said.“We have an activities series, sports series and a specialty camp.” The sports camps feature activities such as baseball, cheerleading, football and volleyball, Stamey said. “Our activities series are theme-based and specific to age groups,” he added. “So you’ve got like a history camp for the little kids and then a history camp for the older kids and then Creation Station, wilderness camps, CSI camps so they get to learn how the sheriff’s department handles a crime scene investigation. So it’s pretty cool and it covers the gamut so we meet all of the interests of the community and what everybody may be looking for.” Sports camps typically run five days a week from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at a cost of $80 per participant, Stamey said. Before and after care for sports camps is an additional $20. Activities camps are held four days a week, also from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Stamey said, at a cost of $64 per person, with an additional charge of $16 for before and after care. Scholarships are available up to $100 per programming season and are based on proof of hardship, Stamey said. “We also have a new specialty series that we’ve added this year,”

The GCPRFM’s July 4 celebration and fireworks display is always a popular event.
Swalin said, “which is more of a skills development. It includes soccer, basketball, horseback riding and then a Fit Fun in the Sun athletic program.” GCPRFM also will offer lots of adult and youth classes this summer and fall, such as horseback riding lessons, CPR/AED/ First Aid classes, dog obedience, firearms safety, nutrition programs and cultural arts programs at the Arts Academy of Goochland. The next big event is the fireworks display slated for
Wednesday, July 4, at the Goochland Sports Complex. Stamey said they’re looking for good weather this year and shooting for 10,000 people to attend. The county boasts a new facility in Tucker Park at Maidens Crossing, which opened in October. “It’s located right on the river – 36 acres, 1,200 feet of river frontage,” Stamey said, adding that the park features a 1-mile trail and open recreational areas.
“We’re going to be breaking ground on Leakes Mill Park here in the next couple months and phase one will be an 80space parking lot with two regulation-size adult athletic fields,” Stamey said. The department is in the process of working on a fall program guide, which will be available in print on Aug. 1 and on the GCPRFM website – www. goochland.va.us – about two weeks before that, as well as on Face book, Swalin said. Some of the new things the
department plans to offer in the fall, Stamey said, are an adult softball league at Hidden Rock Park, an adult flag football league at Tucker Park and an adult church basketball league. All of the activities and events are part of the department’s goal of trying to reach out to the county’s population of roughly 20,000, Stamey said. “We have a mission statement and the ultimate goal is to improve the quality of life of everyone in the county,” he said. Stamey added that GCPRFM
is always looking for volunteers and sponsors for events. “We offer an extensive sponsorship package,” Stamey said.“As you know, we’re in a tough economic time and we’re looking to offset expenditures any way possible….We want to serve as kind of a, I guess kind of an engine to get the exposure for local businesses out there as well because we want to help them thrive.” For more information about programs and events offered by GCPRFM, call 5565854.

Bulldogs made the grade in return to Group A By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
There’s no question that Goochland High School enjoyed one of their most successful athletic seasons in recent memory. The return to the James River District and Group A helped the Bulldogs make the year one to remember. The varsity football team notched a 14-1 record and were the state runner-up. After two competitive seasons in Group AA and the Jefferson District, head coach Joe Fowler saw a big payoff in the return. “Obviously, we experienced a lot more success across the board in Group A than we did in Group AA,” he said. “I think a huge part of that is the fact that we were playing against schools our own size on a regular basis.” However, Fowler didn’t discount the influence of the past two years on this season’s success. “The time we spent in AA served us well though, as our kids had to raise their level of play to compete in the Jefferson District,” he said. “They kept playing at that same level in the James River District. Hopefully we can continue that momen-
tum for years to come.” Like football, the Goochland volleyball team enjoyed a turnaround season and walked away with a James River District title. Under the tutelage of first year head coach Jennifer Erixon, the team advanced to the state quarterfinals. Over the winter, the girls’ basketball team kept pace and also improved their record in their return to JRD play. Coach Sarah Voyack felt the turnaround could be contributed to facing equal competition. “This season was much improved from the previous two seasons in the Jefferson District,” she said. “We were able to play teams that were more on our level in terms of skill. I think all teams saw a higher success rate returning to the JRD.” Spring saw Coach Wes Farkas and the Bulldog baseball team capture a district title, losing only one league game in the process. They also advanced to the second round of regional play for the first time in five years. Amy Henneberger’s softball team didn’t miss a beat as they returned to JRD competition, compiling 20-win season and advancing to regional semifi-

nal play for the second year in a row. Both the girls and boys soccer teams found a return to glory by capturing JRD titles and advancing to the second round of regional play for the first time in three years. The Lady Bulldog tennis squad took the JRD title and
advanced to regional play. For GHS athletic director Bryan Gordon, the championships speak for themselves and offer ample evidence of the banner year for Goochland athletics. “I thought it was a great year — placed first in football in JRD and runner up in
the state,” Gordon siad. “We went to the state quarterfinals in volleyball. All teams knew that they had a chance to win every time they took the court or field.”
But the titles produced more than just trophies, according to Gordon. “For our students at GHS we were more competitive for every sport.”

FOR YOUR ENTERTAINMENT CROSSWORD PUZZLE
SUDOKU: FUN BY THE NUMBERS
HOROSCOPES ARIES - Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, your ambition will take you to new places this week. Channel your energy in a constructive method to make the most of this renewed vigor. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, now is the time to do slow and steady work, rather than experimenting with new methods. You’ll have time for fun and some trial and error later on. GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, for some reason you feel compelled to get started on something new in the next few days. This may be a job or a relationship -- only time will unveil the secrets. CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, you will need to take an intellectual approach to solving what has been troubling you recently. Lists and careful consideration might be necessary. LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 You have to approach someone who hasn’t been doing his or her share of the work, Leo. Tread gently because there could be a very good reason why this person has been floundering.

Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes. The more numbers you name, the easier it gets to solve the puzzle!
