White water freighters arrive at Maidens Landing By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
A
lthough the temperature hit 90 plus Saturday afternoon, folks waiting for the 18 boats in this year’s James River Batteau Festival to arrive at Powhatan’s Maidens Landing were cooled by a pleasant breeze. Now in its 27the year, the festival celebrates the historic freight hauling craft that once plied Virginia’s rivers and
canals. “This was our nation’s highway,” said D.J. Barnard, a member of the Virginia Canals and Navigation Society. “There weren’t any good roads or trucks back then,” she said. D.J.’s husband Roy, crewing on the Anthony Rucker, has been on a boat for every festival since the first in 1988, she said. D.J., from Altavista, has crewed herself. “I was the boat wench,” she laughed.
Boat wenches evidently get off a little lighter than ordinary crew members, according to D.J., who said she poled the boat some but mostly helped the other crew members cool off by doing things like shampooing their hair. It was Harry Farmer’s first time watching the batteaux come in. Farmer, 74, enjoyed a tomato sandwich while see Batteaux > page 4

Severe weather crashed into Goochland County Monday afternoon, downing trees, closing roads, cutting power and sending at least one resident to the hospital. Fire/EMS Chief Robert MacKay, manning the Emergency Operations Center in the Sheriff ’s Office Monday night, said at one time Interstate 64 was closed in both directions between
Oilville and Ashland Road. “We had trees completely across the interstate,” said MacKay. Other roads blocked by downed trees and power lines included Route 250, Rockville Road, Fairgrounds Road and Hockett Road, he said. MacKay said as of Monday evening he had only one report of severe structural damage to a dwelling, forcing a family to move out to a hotel. One man was reported

struck in the head by a falling tree and transported to the hospital. MacKay said no emergency shelters were currently in place but planning is under way for providing shelter for those still without power later in the week, when temperatures are expected to exceed 100 degrees. Although a tornado had been reported in Gum Spring, MacKay said Monday evening he had not received confirmation of a tornado.

Addiction is a problem in Goochland and one church has decided to do something about it. Rev. Mike Hennigan of Victory Christian Fellowship said his congregation has been praying about the addiction problem for the last three years. “Our awareness was increasing,” said Hennigan at a recent interview at the church. Hennigan and church member Bill Martin are two of the leaders of the program, which meets every Tuesday evening at 7 p.m.at the church. Confidentiality is assured in the program which is open to anyone, church member or not, Christian or not. But the church’s program is Christ-based, said Hennigan. “We don’t apologize for it,” he said. “The 12 step program talks about the need for a higher power. That higher power is the Lord Jesus,” he said. Victory Christian started their addiction recovery program in February and it is open to anyone struggling with addiction, be it to alcohol, prescription drugs, cocaine, sex, gambling or any other obsession that has taken control of their lives. “Addiction is a huge problem,” said Hennigan. “It destroys families.” The extent of substance abuse came home to him when he read a recent story that said 30 percent of high school age students are drinking alcohol and 15 percent are getting drunk. New temptations emerge all the time, said Martin, like bath salts and fake marijuana. Prescription drug abuse combined with alcohol is an especially dangerous combination, he said. “It seems like the laws are getting stiffer but the problem still gets worse,” said Martin. Hennigan said there are not a lot of options for Goochlanders struggling with addiction and many choose to go outside the county to get help. Called Living Free, Victory Christian’s program combines elements of the Celebrate Recovery program along with other traditional 12 step programs. Each session begins with all members meeting in a group for worship, music and prayer, after which they divide up into support groups, one for men and one for

women. “The first leap in recovery is to get past denial,” said Hennigan. “The challenge of addiction is you are being controlled but you think you are still in control.” Hennigan, who has been at Victory Christian as pastor since 2003 along with his wife Elizabeth, also a pastor, said
Living Free is held right after the fellowships food pantry. “So this is kind of the next step of our church reaching out to the community,” said Hennigan. To find out more about Living Free, call the fellowship at 804-556-5700 or visit their web site at www.vcfgoochland.org.
Crozier Company 2 schedules new barbeque fund raiser Contributed Report
Crozier Company 2 historically has had chicken barbeque fundraisers in June for years and years. But this event came to an end a couple of years ago when the renovations at the station eliminated the BBQ pits. So this year, Company 2 Auxiliary is trying something new. It is offering a pork barbeque meal for four: a pound of barbeque, a pint of cole slaw, a quart of baked beans and six rolls for $20. Since they have never done this before, this will be a first! Tickets must be purchased in advance. They are available from any member of Company 2’s Auxiliary or Fire and Rescue personnel or by calling Ann Casey, the Auxiliary president at 784-5898. The meals may be picked up on July 14 between 1 p.m. - 5 p.m.

Young Life group raises scholarship money Members of Young Life of Goochland found a unique way to raise money for scholarships to summer camp – paint mailbox posts and mailboxes. About 15 to 20 youths from the local organization turned out Saturday for painting duty in the Holland Hills neighborhood near Goochland High School. Ian McIntosh, a 25-year-old Young Life associate assigned to Goochland County, said the international organization is a nondenominational Christian ministry with a focus on mentoring youth “from middle school till college. A paid Young Life staffer, McIntosh said he works with adult volunteers to establish relationships with youth as role models. About six to eight adult volunteers showed up Saturday to help with the painting project, McIntosh said. At the last tally, 39 of the 93 Holland Hills homeowners had signed up to have their mailbox posts painted, with some also wanting their mailboxes painted. The suggested payment was $25 per mailbox post. McIntosh said the money raised Saturday will go toward scholarships for Young Life members who can’t afford to pay the full $699 for a week of camp at Young Life’s Lake Champion in Glen Spey, N.Y. “Our tagline is to give the kids the best week of their life, McIntosh said. McIntosh said that with the aid of local businesses and churches, about $7,000 had been raised prior to Saturday’s event to help send 35 youths to Lake Champion for the week of July 7-13. Some of the youths who came out Saturday were there to
help their friends earn money to go to camp, McIntosh said. “They’ve been to camp previously and just had the best week of their life and wanted their friends to experience the same thing, McIntosh said. Dylan Douglas, 18, who graduated from Goochland High School earlier this month, said he had already paid for his trip to Lake Champion and he wanted to help others earn their way. “I’m just choosing to help out to hang out with my friends and love them and help them do all the work so they can go to camp too,
Douglas said. Sarah Schwartz, 16, a rising senior at GHS, said she enjoys attending Young Life meetings and interacting with her friends and Young Life leaders. Schwartz also was hard at work on Saturday to earn money for her trip to camp. “I feel like it’s blood, sweat and tears, Schwartz said good-naturedly. “You earn money some way. Von King, 19, also a 2012 GHS graduate, said he too enjoyed helping out. “I feel great because it helps other people we know, King said. “They [homeown-
ers] don’t have to paint their own mailboxes and it helps fundraise for camp and kids to go to camp. Holland Hills resident Kurt Haas opted to have his mailbox post painted because the price was right and it needed to be done, he said. “We all [have] mailbox posts that [were] originally green and I don’t know what color they are now, Haas said. “I think they’re lime. Haas said he also thought the Young Life project was “a good cause. Elizabeth Nelson-Lyda was
the resident coordinator for Saturday’s project. She and her husband, Timothy, have five children, two of whom are Young Life members. “I think it’s a great influence on the kids, Mrs. NelsonLyda said of Young Life and events like Saturday’s. “I like the fact that this instills some values in them and sense of community so that’s really why I wanted to do it because of that. GHS varsity baseball coach Wes Farkas, 34, has been volunteering with Young Life for three years and he also
came out Saturday to help. Farkas said Young Life had an impact on him when he attended Loudoun Valley High School. “I think Young Life does a great job of presenting clearly the Christian faith, but not forcing kids but just loving kids, Farkas said. “We invite them to do things and love them and try to be like Ian said, kind of be mentors and just try to give them some full life without having all the other stuff that the kids look to that will ultimately bring them down.

County employees will get a 5.75 percent increase, beginning July 1, after the board of supervisors chose to approve the full 5 percent contribution to the Virginia Retirement System
(VRS). The salary increase will offset the required contribution from each employee to VRS. Supervisors took the action in response to legislation passed by the Virginia General Assembly in its most recent session, requiring the contribution, and giving localities the option of phasing in the contribution or making the full 5 percent contribution immediately. Goochland Schools chose to phase in the contribution, starting with 1 percent in July.
The board also voted to require all employees to pay for part of their health insurance. Up to this point, employee only basic premium was paid entirely by the county. Beginning in October, employees choosing employee only coverage will pay $20 per month toward the premium, with the county picking up the rest of the $496 total. Premium contribution for workers choosing the employee plus one and employee plus family, will also increase, by $44.61 and $55.04 respectively per month.

waiting. “It’s something I always wanted to do,” said Farmer, a three-year cancer survivor who said he doesn’t put off things anymore. But not everyone on the riverbank was there for the festival. Carl James of Powhatan was just trying to catch some bass and catfish on a fine afternoon, unaware that the batteaux were scheduled to arrive shortly. But most folks on the riverbank were there to see the flat-bottomed boats come in. Elizabeth Jenkins was looking to meet her son so they could watch the boats arrive. She knew he was there because his Checker car was parked at the landing. Not too many white ’67 Checkers around, you know. The first to arrive was the Slate River around 3:15 in the afternoon. Captain Randy Waycaster of Buckingham said it was the first year for the boat and the whole crew were rookies, except for himself. The trip from Lynchburg was uneventful, said Waycaster, except for a Thursday evening thunderstorm that interrupted the crew’s supper. “It blew us out into the river while we were eating dinner,” he said. As usual, there was a lot of picture taking going on. Photographer Arthur Jenkins setup seemed appropriate for the occasion. He had a view camera with film holders mounted on a tripod for the event. Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU makes great strides in just two years Just two short years ago, the VCU Medical Center and Children’s Hospital joined forces to become Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU, providing a unified source of comprehensive, coordinated pediatric care to children in Central Virginia. While June 30, 2012, marks the two-year anniversary of the partnership, VCU Medical Center and Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU have been making great strides to advance children’s health in our region for nearly a century. In fact, 2017 will mark 100 years of children’s health in Richmond, and efforts to expand and increase health services for children continue. It all began when Dr. William Tate Graham, Virginia’s first orthopaedic surgeon, opened a free clinic in the basement of his office on East Franklin Street. Three years later, a group of concerned citizens organized the Crippled Children’s Hospital with Dr. Graham, the Medical College of Virginia and Memorial Hospital, but at the time,
there was no hospital building to support these services. Then in 1928, the children’s hospital building on Brook Road opened. From those humble beginnings, significant advances have been made. From recruiting additional specialists, to establishing new pediatric programs, from groundbreaking research to expansion projects, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU remains committed to
improving pediatric care in the community. On November 8, 2011 a team of VCU pediatric surgeons successfully completed the separation of 19-month-old conjoined twins Maria and Teresa Tapia of the Dominican Republic. The complex, 20-hour procedure was the first surgery of its kind at the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. Led by Dr. David Lanning, professor in the VCU Department of Surgery and surgeonin-chief, the team was made up of about 45 physicians and pediatric subspecialists who volunteered their time. “Few children’s hospitals in the world today could or would attempt the separation of the conjoined twins that was successfully performed at Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. This should serve as a constant reminder of the commitment to advancing children’s health that has already been made by the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU and our pediatric specialists,” said John Duval, CEO of MCV Hospitals. But the
Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU is not resting on its laurels. “Children’s care is a priority for VCU Medical Center, as evidenced by our multiyear investments in the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU,” said Dr. Sheldon Retchin, CEO of the VCU Health System and vice president for VCU Health Sciences. “In the past two years, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU has increased its pediatric specialists by 20 percent, improving access to care for children in Central Virginia. “In 2008, we opened a critical care hospital, which includes a unique 40bed private room NICU. In 2010, we opened a new pediatric emergency room, the only one in Central Virginia to offer 24-hour access to all pediatric specialists for the care of acutely ill and injured children.” This fall, Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU will break ground on a state-of-the-art ambulatory pavilion for children to meet the growing demand for outpatient services. The new pavilion will include a multistory parking deck, physician clinics and pediatricdedicated imaging and surgical services, among other features to improve care coordination and the patient experience. Down the lazy river Watching the long flat batteaux come into Maidens Landing Saturday was a welcome break from the hustle and bustle of the weekday rat race. I’ve been to the event for a number of years now and it never fails to impress upon me how human life has changed over a relatively short time. I asked some of the folks from the canal society when the first boat might pull in and they seemed remarkably unconcerned. Enamored as we are with our ability to constantly stay in touch, I had temporarily lost touch with the spirit of the event. I figured someone was surely talking to the boat captains as they poled the river on the last leg of the week-long voyage, like a ground controller guiding a Navy fighter toward its aircraft carrier home. But it’s just not that way with the batteaux folks. They’re in it for the slow, relaxing experience, it seems. They don’t check in by cell phone every half hour to report progress. It’s not a race after all, although there does seem to be some interest in which boat arrives first at Maidens. Meanwhile canoeists, kayakers, fishermen and a variety of dogs were enjoying nature and the river, some probably oblivious (at least one fisherman for sure) to the fact that the batteau festival was even going on. Needless to say, such a pleasant interval could last only so long and by Monday the pressing concerns of the day reemerged. Watching TV while trying to get ready for work, all I heard was speculation on what the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision on the 2010 Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, referred to by some as Obamacare, might be. I wondered what those who used the batteaux for their intended purpose, transporting goods to market back in Thomas Jefferson’s day, might have thought about a government so intricately involved in the daily life of all its citizens. Surely they could never have imagined such a state, but then they would likely never have dreamed of the technology that would make their boats one day obsolete either. Like most folks, I haven’t read the law (they say it’s thousands of pages long) and have only a general idea what’s in it. I do know it’s considered to be a landmark case in the battle between those who favor limiting the role of the feds as opposed to those who prefer a more activist federal government. But the high court disappointed the pundits and me, postponing their announcement until Thursday. What would the batteaux captains have thought? - Ken Odor

Letters to the Editor Support local Fire/EMS crews Just over a year ago, the unimaginable happened to our family. A call from our frantic 14-year-old daughter revealed that our house was on fire. The sheer helplessness that we felt was overwhelming as well as the fear of what we would find when we got home. She had called 911 and the fire department was on their way, but we were returning home from a sporting event and still 35 minutes away.
When we arrived, there were three fire trucks and numerous rescue vehicles in our driveway. The crews had nearly extinguished the fire by the time we arrived, but it was two hours before we were able to safely enter the house and survey the damage. Our smoke detectors were not functioning which allowed the damage to be more extensive, however, the quick actions and professional nature of the members of Companies 2 and 1 saved our home from complete destruction.
We will never be able to express our gratitude to all the Fire and Rescue personnel, both volunteers as well as paid, who saved our home. One never realizes how quickly your life can be turned upside down. One never thinks that they will need the services of their local fire department...calamity happens to the “other guys”. You cannot imagine it until it happens. We pray that you will never need their services. see Letters > page 8

Contributed Report
Any class offered by the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is worth attending, according to two teachers at Goochland Middle School. If you add a road trip and an early breakfast to the mix, and you have an adventure. The Rawls Museum of Art in Courtland provided the setting for VMFA’s 2012 Summer Institute for Teachers, a creative explosion of ideas called “Artful Reading,” led by VMFA’s Twyla Kitts and Celeste Fetta. “The best part of the class was how it related good literature and reading to the world of art,” said Ann Rohrer, a GMS art teacher. The Museum staff members inspire teachers to use fine art
work to illustrate and explain life and culture through all the core disciplines. Her colleague, Emily Ray, agreed. “Working with and learning alongside English and art teachers from across Virginia made it even better,” the teacher of English and creative writing said. The presenters provided artistic background from the Art treasures of the Virginia Museum. What triggered the stimulation of thought processes that resulted from seeing images housed at the Museum? How did making art relate to reading good literature, and teach thinking skills and information from all subject areas? Teachers enjoyed hearing the interesting stories about artists and how they learned
to incorporate their unique world into their personal art. Take Alexander Caulder’s story for example. Caulder, nicknamed Sandy, was working with simple machines. He didn’t even realize he was creating art when he developed his five suitcases of moveable wire circus performers but he was using science and math! The VMFA class featured a children’s book titled Sandy’s Circus. The author employs literary devices such as metaphors, similes, alliteration, and personification to make the images move in the reader’s mind. Teachers were encouraged to use the artistic elements of shape, color, line, and then add the dimension of movement to group see Museum > page 8

It was Alexander Caulder who invented the moveable art form we now call mobiles! “Each group was given resources to use such as wire, pipe cleaners, fasteners, wire cutters, tissue paper, tape, paper clips, foam, and other media and materials,” Rohrer said. “Our goal was to create a moveable work of art inspired by an example of good literature for the classroom. Ray elaborated, “Our story was based on a Chinese work entitled The Boy who Painted Dragons. It featured

the importance of facing and finding truth, something all us deal with.” Rohrer described the artistic process the group used. “Five art and English teachers developed a prototype dragon using the materials provided. We exchanged ideas and sketched out a plan.” Ray interjected, “We gave each other the courtesy of listening and trying out our ideas rather than jumping into the first idea that came into our heads.” What evolved was a mass of twisted scratch paper, wire, pipe cleaners, tissue paper, and a base to attach the moveable parts. The head of the dragon posed the biggest challenge, as it
was larger than the rest of the creature. Finally, attaching scales, spikes, tentaclelike claws, proved to be the fun part. With its’ bobbing head and wiggling tail, the group titled their project, “Face your fears: dare to be true.” A sharing session of moveable art from eight groups followed. After a lunch break the groups reassembled for a presentation on ways to create projects inspired by a short novella called Seedfolks, written by Paul Fleischman. The story’s plot, literally, centers on a piece of land in the inner city that becomes a community garden. Rather, the garden causes a com-
munity to form as each city immigrant “plants” their personal story. The resulting title, Seedfolks refers to ancestors. Engagingly drawn by the author, each character tells their tale in a separate chapter. The Museum presenters provided teachers with lesson plan ideas and resources. Each participant chose a particular character and assembled a collage seed package with instructions for how to care for that character. The lesson planners tied the content to Virginia Standards of Learning across many disciplines. Once again, teachers at this institute practiced the creative process, and the result was their own garden
of the book’s characters. “Just like words are pulled together to create a story, and elements of art are drawn together to make a painting, the characters were tied together, uniting their own cultures, to create a community,” Rohrer stated. Ray added, “The ideas for these creative student projects are not limited to this particular book. They could be related to any novel that involves diverse characters coming together to explore any number of themes. “What was inspiring about the Seedfolks theme was that it brought together a diverse array of characters that ended up helping each other, making lives better for all
concerned.” She added that GMS seventh grade teachers had been teaching this novel for years. “I’m excited to take what I learned and apply it to the introduction of other stories,” Ray said. The Summer Institute for teachers by VMFA was supported by a generous grant from The Camp Family Foundation. The class was offered to teachers at a nominal fee. Persons interested in programs and classes offered by VMFA may visit the Museum’s website at http:// www.vmfa.state.va.us. The school would not exist if it were not for the cooperation of the surrounding communities whose students it serves in the metropolitan Richmond area. In addition to Goochland County Public Schools, the school divisions include: Charles City, Chesterfield, Hanover, Henrico, King and Queen, New Kent, Petersburg, Powhatan, Prince George, and Richmond. For the most part, if you were to ask citizens to provide an example of excellence in government, many would have trouble articulating areas of government service that they believe rise to that level of service excellence. Recently the school was recognized by Newsweek Magazine
as the 16th Best Public High School in America. The 16th best public high school IN THE NATION, right here in our own back yard. That is “excellence”. One of the requirements for earning a diploma from MLWSGIS is to give back to the community that supports these students. Each graduating student must contribute a minimum of 140 hours of volunteer service to the local community. In addition to delivering results in the classroom, again, this class delivered exceptional results in volunteering their time. The Class of 2012 (177 students) contributed over 38,000 hours of community service over the past four years. As members of the local government consortium that helped to make the school a reality, our county should be very proud of our membership, and thankful to the visionaries that helped to establish a school that is such a positive reflection on our region of the country.

For the past four years, these county residents have represented Goochland County Public Schools at the Maggie L. Walker Governor’s School for Government and International S t u d i e s ( M LW S G I S ) . The Governor’s school held its graduation ceremony at the Carpenter Center on Friday June 15th. This particular class happened to be one of the most distinguished classes in the school’s brief his-

Truett Mary Frances Lazenby Truett, beloved Mom, Memee, cousin, and dear friend, passed away on June 19, 2012 in Richmond, Va. At the time of her death, Frances had checked off all items on her “bucket list” and was at peace. Frances was born January 9, 1921 in Otterville, Va., in Bedford County. Although the only child of Edward Jopling and Mary Mitchell Lazenby, she was blessed with over a dozen first cousins whom she adored. She graduated
from what is now the University of Mary Washington, and it was during a student teacher training program in Goochland that she met and fell in love with, not only the County, but Earl Clifton Truett Jr. They were married July 31, 1943 and had three loving children. Frances obtained her Real Estate License, and after becoming one of the first female Real Estate Brokers in Virginia, she and her eldest son rapidly grew their small firm into one of the most successful businesses in the area. Their slogan, “We Know Goochland” became iconic, and it seemed as if everyone in the county somehow knew the Truett family. Frances was active at Grace Episcopal Church for over 60 years, faithfully serving on the Vestry, Altar Guild, and Hospitality Committee and as a Trustee. She was a member of numerous civic boards, and especially enjoyed the Goochland Historical Society, the Goochland

Rossi joins the elite as Bryan Trophy winner Winn Alden takes Markel Award By Dave Lawrence Special Correspondent
Manakin-Sabot – When Anna Rossi touched the Deep Run Horse Show’s Bryan Trophy on Sunday, she ran her finger across the list of winners inscribed in the metal. It stopped at Rodney Jenkins, an equestrian legend – National Show Hunter and Show Jumping hall of famer, a five-time winner of the American Gold Cup five times and three-time winner of the grand prix at New York’s National Horse Show and the Washington’s International’s President’s Cup. Rossi, a 17-year-old from the District of Columbia, was not just admiring the trophy. As she studied Jenkins’ name, she was standing in the middle of jumping course on the grounds of Deep Run Hunt Club, with her mount, Second City, and being admired herself by spectators in the adjacent grandstand. She had just achieved membership in a selective peerage by becoming the Bryan Trophy’s 51st

winner. “I know many great riders have won,” Rossi said. “This was just pretty special to me.” Rossi topped a field of five competitors for this year’s trophy, which is awarded based on the rider’s performance during three events, a jumping test, a flat test, and a final jumping test devised by the judges. Nora Jodrey, riding The
Golden Compass, came in second, followed by Meghan Kaupp on Wingman, Margaret Luck on Big City, and Michelle Sturtz on Korngold. Despite the small field, Rossi felt the pressure as the start of the competition loomed. “As you get closer and closer, it’s a real challenge. You’ve got to try to stay calm,” Rossi said. “It’s a real test for riders to stay
Rockville All-Stars win Fisherville Tournament The Rockville 10 Year Old All-Stars won the 2012 Fishersville Invitational Tournament. After routs of Waynesboro (17-1), Rockbridge (22-6) and West Augusta (16-6), Rockville faced undefeated Shenandoah in the championship. Rockville jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. Shenandoah scored two runs in the bottom of the first but Rockville added a run in the top of the fourth then their defense limited Shenandoah to two runs over the rest of the game. cool under pressure. … I have terrible nerves. I always have. They way I try to control them is to not think about it.” Instead she thought about the course. “I break down the course into sections to rest and calm down,” Rossi said. Rossi had been in the Bryan Trophy before, placing second last year to Savannah Jenkins. Jenkins had finished second two years ago, giving Rossi hope that she could repeat the pattern. Experience is not enough, however. Rossi’s trainer, Winn Alden, provides the mentoring young riders need to become winners. Alden ended the day a winner herself, claiming the $1,000 Markel Award given to current trainers of the top three winners in the Bryan Trophy Horsemanship class. Alden, a second-place finisher in the Bryan Trophy competition herself, said her experience in the competition gives her a valuable edge. “Some people can ride, some people can teach. Hopefully I can do both,” Alden said. “I know how they feel when they
walk in there – the kind of pressure they put on themselves.” Alden seems to have the right touch, having trained three other Bryan Trophy winners before Rossi. “That probably is better, probably better than winning yourself,” she said of training winners. She admires what her riders have accomplished. “They haven’t had easy horses,” Alden said. “They’ve had to work really hard, so that makes [their winning] better.” Rossi said working with horses is always unpredictable. “You can never take anything in this sport for granted,” Rossi said. “They’re animals. They have a mind of their own.” Despite the horse’s unpredictability, Alden finds working with them rewarding as well. “It’s my life. I have a master’s degree. I worked for the government, Department of Defense, for six years, but I came back to riding,” Alden said. “The horses helped me to learn how to communicate. Their therapeutic powers are very good. The horses help you in so many ways.”
Sunday’s Bryan Trophy win capped a busy week for Rossi and Alden. Rossi placed first in 22 other classes, including ASPCA Maclay Horsemanship award, the Blue Canyon Perpetual Trophy, Edwin P. Conquest Challenge Trophy, Susanna Rowe Challenge Trophy, Esther Edwards Perpetual Trophy, Francis Newbill Rowe Challenge Trophy, Constance Tyson Bryson Memorial Perpetual Trophy, Foxy Challenge Trophy, Mr. & Mrs. Stewart Bryan Challenge Trophy, and the Hunter Seat Equitation Championship. Rossi also claimed nine secondand third place finishes apiece. As for her future, the summer will be busy with extended horse-show appearances in Virginia and Kentucky. Despite the boost the Bryan Trophy win gives to her resume, the rising senior is not sure whether she will pursue equestrian competition as a sport when she starts college next year. Athletics are not her top priority. “Grades come first,” Rossi said.
