New GHS principal comes ‘home’ Well traveled administrator back in his old neighborhood By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
When Charles Michael Newman saw that Goochland High School was looking for a new principal, it was an easy decision to apply. “It was an opportunity to move back home,” said Newman (he goes by Mike) in an interview at his office at the school last week. “I couldn’t help but apply.” Newman has been principal at Windsor High School in Isle of Wight County for the last three years. His first day on the job was July 11. He replaces Francie Ball, who resigned earlier this year. Goochland High School’s new principal arrives with an extensive background in education, with three years as assistant principal at Stonewall Jackson in Hanover and four

Three locals named ‘Hometown Heroes By Ben Orcutt Special Correspondent
Sometimes good things happen to good people for good reasons. That’s the case for three Goochland residents who have been honored as “Hometown Heroes by the Richmondbased law firm of Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen. The Goochland Hometown Heroes – all of whom live in Manakin-Sabot – are Patricia Atherholt, Grace Butler and Howard Henley. The candidates for the Hometown Heroes awards are nominated by the public and the nominations are divided among Allen & Allen’s eight statewide branch offices where committees select the Hometown Heroes, according to Emily Krause, director of marketing for the law firm. Krause said the Hometown Heroes are recognized for what they give back to their communities. Fifty Hometown Heroes were selected from across the state for 2012, Krause said, with their stories shared on Allen & Allen’s web site – www. allenandallen.com. “We hopefully bring awareness of their cause, their organization, the activism that they do and then they are invited to attend three concerts across the state where we honor them at VIP receptions and then they’re recognized on stage and they get this great T-shirt, Krause said. Atherholt, 78, said she and her husband Ken have lived in Goochland for about 25 years. Atherholt retired after serving for 13 years as the historic director at St. John’s Church in Richmond where Patrick Henry gave his famous, “Give me liberty or give me death speech. Before that, Atherholt said she taught history at the University of Richmond.

Goochlanders Grace Butler, left, Howard Henley and Patricia Atherholt have been selected as three of the 50 Hometown Heroes on the law firm of Allen, Allen, Allen & Allen.
Like her fellow Goochland Hometown Heroes, Atherholt is appreciative of the honor. “It’s lovely, she said, “but there are so many more people that are so much more deserving than I am. Atherholt has devoted much of her time to the Friends of the Goochland Library and the Elizabeth Kates Foundation, which is named for the first warden of the women’s prison in Goochland. Atherholt said “the Kates Foundation provides education for the women out there after the GED. The state educates them up to the GED and then the Kates Foundation provides education for them after that by raising money. Although she is not the president of the Kates Foundation this year, Atherholt said she has been the group’s president “a number of times. Butler, 61, is a former elementary school teacher who has lived in Goochland with her husband Rudy for 25 years. In addition to being president of the Hanover Master Gardeners, Butler has served
with the Centerville Volunteer Fire and Rescue Company 3 Auxiliary for 20 years and has been the group’s president. She also started the food pantry at St. Matthew’s United Methodist Church. Butler said she also works with CASA, “which is a major love of my life working with the kids.â€? CASA stands for Court Appointed Special Advocate, Butler said, and serves children who are in need of protective services. “They’re assigned an advocate,â€? Butler said. “We do the research. We do the home visits. We make the recommendations. We go with them. We write reports for the court‌. That sort of stuff.â€? Henley, 86, is the former fire chief of the Goochland Volunteer Fire Department. He said he is “very thankfulâ€? to have been honored as a Hometown Hero. His wife is Eva Henley. A former Marine who fought in the Battle of Okinawa during World War II, Henley said after being in “right tight
places there, he thought he could handle becoming a firefighter and while no longer fire chief, he is in his 60th year of service to Goochland County Fire & Rescue. Henley is a certified EMT and was a state-certified fire instructor for about 40 years, he said. “He was a great teacher, said Henley’s niece, 58-year-old Barbara Sensabaugh, who like many of her family members, is involved in volunteer rescue service. “He taught a lot of the firefighters that are in the county today and the ones still coming along, Sensabaugh said of Henley. “He can teach vehicle extrication, ropes. He can tie any knot you can imagine. Just tell him a knot and he can tie it. I think he provided that leadership and all to Goochland for many, many years and still is an inspiration to a lot of people. While Atherholt, Butler and Henley all have given selflessly of themselves, Butler perhaps spoke for all three when she said, “but I’ve gotten back a lot more than I’ve ever given.

Planning commission renews Richmond Strikers’ CUP Could existing soccer fields in West Creek provide a key element in Goochland’s future economic development? Richmond Strikers president Scott Turner believes it could play a role. “I look at Goochland County as a partner, Turner said. “To that end, we’ve begun to build a relationship with Matthew Ryan, your new economic development director. We are big into sports tourism and we like to promote people coming into the Richmond area to participate in national tournaments, he added. Sports tourism is quickly becoming a vital component of many localities’ economic development plans. Chesterfield County has witnessed an explosion of travel teams who visit the county each year for tournaments, and other localities are throwing their hats in to the sports tourism ring. Last week, the Planning Commission considered a request by the Strikers to extend a conditional use permit to continue operating several soccer fields in
the eastern portion of the county. Turner said the Jefferson Cup, the Strikers annual national tournament held in March, attracts 1,000 teams and players from across the nation. And the West Creek site is included in that list of tournament locations. “We’re bringing visibility to West Creek Park, Turner said. “You never know who is standing on the sidelines watching their kid play soccer, he added. “They could be a CEO who is considering relocating their business to the area. The Strikers accounted for the most bookings of hotel rooms last year, beating out Richmond International Raceway for the most rooms rented. “I think the partnership between the Strikers, Goochland County and the Markels (owners of the property) has been a huge win for our community and more importantly, for our kids. They have a great time out there, Turner said. With a 12-year association with the Strikers, Turner was involved from the inception of the Goochland project five years ago. He said the fields at West Creek are a great, first
class community resource. “We built it and we maintain it in a first class style. As you look at the site from Route 288, we want you to feel that it is well maintained and well managed, Turner said. He said a recent visitor from a European club was quite impressed with the West Creek facility and said it rivaled or exceeded the facilities utilized by many professional clubs in London. “He marveled at what we had created over there, Photo by Jim Ridolphi Turner said. STEM continued from > page 1 The tudents spent Monday through Wednesday studying the principles of civil, mechanical and electrical engineering as they worked on building rockets to launch on Thursday. “One rocket came down nose first and stuck in the
ground,” said Jessica Sheddon, 10, who will be in the sixth grade at Goochland Middle School this fall. That wasn’t the plan though. Most of the rockets, built from kits provided by the schools, drifted down by parachute after rising hundreds of feet into the air. “It went so high we couldn’t see it,” said Maddie Muniz,
11, who said the students were allowed to take their rockets home. She said if they bought new engines the rockets could be launched again. Goochland E.S. teacher Lisa Brown said the first camp was a success and that she looked forward to many more. Brown, Glenda Hawk from Byrd E.S. and Goochland Middle School teacher Tom Case worked with the students and volunteers at the summer camp. “It was really rewarding to see what the kids did,” said Brown. Earlier in the week the students built miniature bridges and several different electrical circuits and learned about the relationship between applied force and handle length to produce the varying amounts of torque. After the rocket launching, the students took a break for lunch at West Creek and then headed down to the Virginia Science Museum where they
participated in a live session with scientists doing sea-bottom research on the coral reef off the coast of the Florida Keys. “Goochland students were the only group, among participants world-wide, that were able to ask the scientists questions. Other groups listened only,” said retired electrical engineer Adeeb Hamzey, one of the main organizers of the STEM summer camp. After the live session with the scientists the students watched an IMAX film on the arctic and the effect of climate change on life for polar bears and other inhabitants. “The community embraced this summer camp wholeheartedly through valuable volunteer time, in-kind services, and financial assistance from organizations such as the Rotary Club of Goochland, the Richmond Strikers, and the Science Museum of Virginia,” said Hamzey.

Goodwill store to open by year’s end By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Goodwill Industries will open its store in Goochland County by the end of the year, said Goodwill president Charles D. Layman Friday. Ground has been broken at the 2.6 acre site at 1650 St. Matthews Lane just off Broad Street Road in Centerville. Layman said the store will cost about $2.5 million to build. When open, the store will provide jobs for 22 people. Layman said the 18,300 square foot store will be very similar to the one proposed for the intersection of Broad Street Road and Mills Road last
Newman continued from > page 1 years as assistant principal at Moody in Henrico. In addition to his three years at Windsor High School, Newman served eight years as principal of Brookland Middle School in Henrico and three years as principal of Moody Middle School. He began his career in education teaching government and geography at Patrick Henry High School in Hanover, where he later served two years as assistant principal. The example provided by his teachers when he was growing up in Newport New, where his dad worked in the shipyards and his mom was a seamstress, encouraged Newman to choose education as his life’s work, said Newman. “I liked my teachers,” he recalled. “They were good role models for me, that had more to do with it than anything else. I wanted to be like them. And I loved history,” he said. But Newman hasn’t spent his entire career in the class-
year. That plan was eventually scrapped after opposition from Bellview Gardens’ residents led to a thumbs down vote at the planning commission. The current site had been under consideration before the proposal at Mills Road was chosen but the price was too high at the time. Goodwill eventually acquired the St. Matthews Lane site for $800,000, said Layman. After the Mills Road site was dropped Goodwill took another look at the St. Matthews Lane area. “We’re pleased to have found this site,” said Layman, who had said at the time the Mills Road site was withdrawn that the company still hoped to build
a store in the county. bonds issued by the Virginia The new store will be Small Business Financing financed by tax-exempt Authority.
room or as an administrator. When a friend told him about a unique job opportunity overseas, he applied and spent five years working in Saudi Arabia for Fluor Corporation as the company’s director of staff development and training. Single at the time, he traveled widely, an experience that changed his outlook on the world. “I was intrigued by the opportunity,” he said of his decision to work overseas. “There was no reason not to do it. The best thing was I got to travel so much,” he said, visiting countries all over the Middle East, Europe, Asia and Africa. And he learned how to cook with a few more spices, he added. Cooking being one of his main interests, along with gardening and, of course, travel. He spent the four years just prior to taking the principal position at Windsor as assistant executive director of the Virginia Association of Secondary School Principals.
But he missed the students, which led him to take the job at Windsor. Newman and his wife Cary, who taught for 10 years at Goochland and Randolph Elementary Schools, have a grown daughter, Elizabeth, a LPN who is working on a degree in forensic science at Virginia Commonwealth University. On the job just a few days, Newman is getting the lay of the land and he likes what he sees. Fresh from a leadership retreat Newman said he perceives a “team spirit” in the school system and said he hopes to move GHS from “good to great.’ To do that Newman wants to be a principal who interacts with his students. “The principal is not just there to make rules or be the enforcer,” he said, noting that the role of principal has changed over the years. “The principal can support the students in what they are doing, said Newman, although he acknowledged that discipline is always important.

“It’s a part of the job,” he said but added that he does not think there is a discipline problem at GHS. Newman said he made it a point to meet summer school students and had just visited with the girls’ volleyball team at their practice. The new emphasis on Career and Technical Education is a welcome development, said Newman. “We need to be something that appeals to every student,” he said. “What may be your life’s work can emerge at school.” Settling in as principal at a new school takes a while, said Newman. “The first year is the hardest,” he said, involving getting to know the culture. “It’s very important that I become part of life here. I don’t want the students to wonder who the new guy is.” But the main thing always remains the high school diploma, said Newman. “I want the students to understand that is their goal.”

Signing up It’s always a bit of a wake-up call when you reach a milestone that was once decades off in the future. I got just such a wake-up call last week, when I signed on to the social security system to begin the process for enrolling in Medicare. Gee, wasn’t it just yesterday I was 39, like Jack Benny? No, I’m not going to quit working just yet. But as many must know who’ve already been through this process, as one approaches what used to be the magic age of 65 (formerly thought of as the normal retirement age – now just an arbitrary benchmark as the retirement age gradually rises, at least for social security purposes) the federal government encourages you to sign up for your Medicare eligibility whether you need it or not. Many of us still working have health insurance through employers or other sources, and so won’t be using Medicare as a primary health insurance just yet. But Uncle Sam says sign up just the same, preferably three months before your 65th birthday (I’m a couple months late, surprise, surprise). What is also surprising is the complexity of all the decisions that loom the closer you get to retirement. It’s not simple. On any given day you can find articles on financial web pages that urge working until 70 (you get a bigger social security check when you delay taking it) so you can delay tapping your nest egg, if you are fortunate enough to have one. Those articles are invariably followed by comments from the Internet peanut gallery saying baloney! Claim your social security dough at the early retirement age of 62 (it might be 63 by now, I don’t know) – you could die early! And how do you know the government will have the money to pay you if you wait? And so on. Such concerns have an element of validity when you consider the massive amount of debt the federal government has added in the past few years. Debate swirls around whether the current administration has acted wisely, but borrowing has skyrocketed and the often repeated figure is that 40 cents of every dollar the feds spend is borrowed. That’s enough to give one pause. One thing’s for sure – we can’t keep borrowing so much dough without a plan to pay it back, at least if the feds plan to pay the millions of baby boomers fixing to retire their social security and provide them with Medicare health insurance. The two candidates for President and their parties will be talking about this issue up until Election Day. Voters should press them on it – it’s probably THE most important issue facing the nation. - Ken Odor

Thanks to STEM Camp staff and volunteers I am writing to thank every person involved in the planning, financing and implementation of the Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics camp held last week that was offered to all of Goochland’s rising 4th-6th graders. Since my daughter was fortunate enough to be able to take part in this exciting S.T.E.M. program, I wanted to be sure and express my sincerest gratitude to the community volunteers, parent volunteers, paid staff and the school system for making this happen. I can
only assume that our current Acting Superintendent Dr. Peter Gretz and Director of Elementary Education Dr. Steven Geyer must have played a significant role; kudos. I am once again astounded by the extreme dedication shown by Goochland Rotarians Adeeb Hamzey and Richard Carchman with this and all of their endeavors. Also by 3 of the GCPS faculty instructors endorsed in gifted education who led the sessions, Glenda Hawk, Tom Case and Lisa Brown. Obviously, there were countless others who made this all happen and we thank and appreciate you tremendously. Remarkably, we didn’t have to travel out of the county
this time to enroll in a similar program. This all happened here in the middle of Goochland! I knew many of the other students who attended and they, along with my daughter, were so excited with all that they were learning and they had a blast. (Imagine! Learning And Fun!) Yes, they got to send their rockets high up over Striker Field after spending the days prior learning about, and then building them. Certainly many of them may now consider themselves future rocket scientists, designers and engineers. Their excitement and pride of achievement has see Letters > page 10

Extension agent Rachel Grosse talks about the job By Emily Darrell Powhatan Today Staff Writer
Since mid-March Rachel Grosse (pronounced Grah –see), a recent graduate of Virginia Tech, has been working as the agricultural extension agent for Powhatan and Goochland counties through the Virginia Cooperative Extension program, a partnership of Virginia Tech and Virginia State University. Last week she sat down with PT reporter Emily Darrell to discuss the current state of farming in our area, what animals she’d have on her dream farm, and creative ways you can help your local farmer.
What is the role of an extension agent? We take the research [from the universities] and bring it to the citizens of the county. I cover lots of areas: livestock, soils, horticulture, vegetables, rainwater – all of that. I do educational programs, I answer questions, I work with different groups like Monacan

If there’s a two counties: sick tomato plant or there’s a There’s beef cattle, there’s drainage problem in someone’s pasture, I’ll talk about pasture poultry, there’s crops, there’s vegquality with them. I grew up riding just in Powhatan. Some [people] horses and I did 4-H. I always are farming 20 acres and some are doing hundreds or thousands.
On what would be her “dream farm”: I would love to have some beef cattle, some sheep, and maybe some horses. I don’t know, I might have some chickens and goats, too. It’d be like an Old McDonald farm. But I would love to have at least 20 acres – to

have some pastureland and have some woods. Have the wildlife, have the slow growth of the forest, also have the livestock. That would be great.
On whether or not local tastes better: I don’t know if it necessarily tastes better. I think the great thing about it is that you know where your food is coming from and you can have a relationship with that person that’s growing it, and you’re keeping money in the community.
On her up-coming county projects: I’m really excited about starting some programs. I’ve already done a pond workshop. When I first came I got a lot of calls about pond weeds. So we got an extension specialist from Virginia State, a fish aquaculture specialist, and he came up and spoke about weed management, water quality, and fish populations. We’ve going to do a farm tax series. Farming and taxing is very different than if you’re employed by a company. There’s also going to be “Paint Your Own Farm Sign” – a kind a cheap way to market for farmer’s markets or if you’re selling eggs on the side of the road. Just a little better eye-appeal I guess. wanted us to offer a rain barrel workshop, so we’re offering one right now. That’s going to be at the end of July.
On ways to support your local farmer: Farmer’s markets are great – there are CSA’s also, where you can order food online and there’s a pick-up place. There are some scattered all over the state. And even getting to know
your neighbor [can be considered support.]’Cause there’s plenty of people that you might not even know and they might have two cows in the backyard, and they’re splitting the cow with their neighbor so that they’ll have hamburgers and steaks for the rest of the year. There’s a lot of opportunities that you can do like that. You can go to talk to a farmer and say “Hey, I want to buy this cow when it’s grown-up and fed-out and ready to go.”

New restaurant opens in Goochland
Photos by Ken Odor
Friends, patrons and staff gathered Monday evening for the official grand opening of Bella Sicilia Italian Restaurant at 2913 River Road West next to the Devil Monkey Ice Cream Parlor. At left staff and friends gather for the ribbon cutting, which was moved inside due to rain. Above right, Massimo Giambanco, holding his 18-month old son Vito, thanks his quests for their patronage. After the ribbon cutting, Massimo laid out a buffet for visitors to cap off the evening. Massimo and his brother Sal Gambino are co-owners of the new restaurant, which has been open for about six weeks. Massimo, a native of Sicily, said he has lived in the Richmond area for 17 years and also runs a restaurant with his brother in Short Pump. Massimo said he and his wife Francesca were married on the Courthouse Green in Goochland in 2007 and that’s what gave him the idea of opening a restaurant in the Courthouse areas. Closed on Mondays, Massimo said the county has welcomed him. “So far so good,” he said in response to the inevitable question, “how’s business.”? If Bill and Erin Dudley have anything to say about it, business will remain good. Although they’ve lived in Goochland for five years, they spent many years in Chicago and said they know good Italian food and have become regulars at Bella Sicilia. Massimo said some of his most popular dishes are Chicken Cacciatore and Chicken Marsala.
Letters continued from > page 6 even carried into talk by some to wear their bright orange camp shirts, designed by local artist and teacher, Tom Case, to the first day of school! I truly hope that this was only the start of many more similar opportunities made available to our children and not a one-time occurrence. Before my daughter was school aged, I knew there was a gifted
center and was told that GCPS had summer enrichment opportunities and I wholeheartedly looked forward to them. Then my daughter started elementary school and both programs were dissolved. I was very disappointed and disheartened. With so much of their daily schoolwork tied directly to SOL requirements, it just doesn’t seem that there is much room for deviation from, or expounding upon, the curricu-
lum in their typical school day even if teachers want to. This is so unfortunate. Arguably, this may seem like something that the parents should do. While many parents can and do try to take it upon themselves to provide enrichment opportunities for their children, not all can, whether it be financial or other reasons. I for one have a liberal arts education and technical training that afforded me a 15-year career as a business applications
computer programmer before taking on the role of FT mom and I certainly don’t feel that I am qualified to teach as I expect my children to be taught or I might be homeschooling. I have always hoped that my children would be exposed to educational experiences that were led by people who have studied best practices in education, made it their career and are immersed in knowing how to best help create the most effective learning experience
possible for our future leaders. I am sure that I speak on behalf of every parent whose child had the opportunity to attend STEM camp when I again say thank you to everyone who had any involvement in this wonderful educational experience. Please continue your mission and we’ll support you. I hope that my letter conveys how amazed I am at the depth of community volunteerism and depth of content that was delivered. This was no
day care or “basket weaving” course. What a move in a positive direction for our children! It seems like a no brainer that community support of, and contributions for, student enrichment opportunities, whether it is through time, expertise or funding, is an investment we can afford to make. Goochland Christmas Mother gets an early start on fundraising

Goochland Christmas Mother 2012 Heidi Hall got a head start on fundraising for the season last week with a round robin tennis tournament at Hermitage Country Club. “Why wait until October?” asked Hall. It was definitely not Christmas-like weather, with temperatures approaching 100 degrees, said Hall but 21 players and about 40 spectators turned out for the contest, which lasted from 6:30 to a little
after 9 p.m. Players ponied up $30 to compete and with the proceeds of a raffle and food sales and other contributions the event raised $1,080 for the Christmas Mother Fund. “It was just a lot of fun,” said Hall. To find out more about the Goochland Christmas Mother or to make a contribution, contact her at www.goochlandchristmasmother. org. You can also email them at info@goochlandchristmasmother.org.

Richmond Country Club ready for the Eagle Classic
File photos by Charlie Leffler
By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
Last year the Eagle Classic drew record numbers to Richmond Country Club due to the play of 20 players can’t afford to take Eagle Classic. “We were lucky tournament winner Mo Martin, left, and local teen sensation Lyberty Anderson, above. Changes to this year’s tournament should make the event even more exciting.
Once again Richmond Country Club is gearing up for women’s professional golf to return to Goochland county in the Eagle Classic, August 13-19. “We’re excited about this year,” said RCC golf pro and tournament director Matthew Schulze. “We’re trying to make this year the best tournament we’ve had. It’s gotten bigger and better each year and we want to continue that trend.” Last year’s attendance reached record levels for Friday and Saturday play, and only rain prevented even bigger crowds for the final round on Sunday as Mo Martin claimed the trophy. With only five events left on the Symetra Tour when golfers reach RCC, the Eagle Classic is perfectly timed for players who need every stroke to finish in the top ten and qualify for LPGA status. “Traditionally, we get a strong field here,” Schulze said. “The girls who are in the top
The tournament enjoys great local support and sponsorship. Likewise, the accompanying social events are a key element to an exciting week of action. “The real challenge is organizing and scheduling all the social activities that go along with the tournament,” Schulze said. “We want to make sure we get the little things right, and don’t miss anything in the planning stage. There are so many more social events than there used to be.” For example, Thursday evening will feature a presentation by the U.S. Army Pop Band from Fort Lee that is open to the public. The concert begins at 6 p.m. near the driving range. A Meet the Pros party is scheduled for Wednesday, August 15 at 7 p.m. that will benefit Feedmore. There will also be additional skyboxes on the eighteenth green that will give the tournament that PGA feeling for spectators.
a week off at this point in the season.” A top finish at Richmond can affect the numbers drastically. Last year, Martin’s win raised her from 12th to fourth place. That means even more this year with the top ten finishers slated to attain LPGA status. “During the last few weeks of the season the numbers can really jump around quite a bit, so every tournament is important,” Schulze said. An Eagle Classic tournament win also means an automatic entry to this year’s LPGA event at Kingsmill in September. Fortunately, Richmond Country Club’s 6,500 yard, Par 71 course escaped major damage during storms that pelted the area several weeks ago. “We battened down the hatches and we’re ready on all fronts,” Schulze said. Groundskeeper Greg McCue said although there was some damage in spots, the course will be ready for the
with the storms and power outages. We didn’t get the brunt of it.” Generators provided irrigation during the power outage and several trees were downed. “We lost two key trees on No. 11 and 18 holes,” McCue said. “Both protected the greens from shots if you stray a little off the fairway on your tee shot.” Like other golf courses throughout the Richmond area, the high heat and lack of rain have also challenged grounds crews, including McCue’s. “Heat and water stress has taken its toll with a few of the greens, and there are some thinned areas that should recover by tournament week,” McCue said. “We need a couple more breaks from the heat and excess rain to really be great, but we know we will be giving them a good and challengeable venue.” For Schulze, it’s more about the way it rains than how much. “Getting it all at one time like we’ve had with the downpours is not what we need.”
Schulze said spectators can expect to see a high caliber of play with a familiar feeling for fans. “We want people to come out here and see just how good these players are,” Schulze said. “We also want them to see how accessible the players are. You can talk to the girls when they are on the driving range. Once people come out and see the product, it sells itself.” One local crowd favorite is Lyberty Anderson, a Midlothian youth who has made a name for herself in local golf circles by winning the City’s Amateur championship for the past three years. Last year, Anderson entered her first Eagle Classic and it’s a relationship that Schulze said has greatly benefited the tournament. “She’s great. She’s done a lot to help us promote the tournament,” he said. “She gets golf and she’s a great kid a real asset to the event.” The club and course are
ready and waiting for the 144 golfers who will converge on RCC next month. “It’s a great event and a lot of fun,” Schulze said. “I’m a golfer at heart, so this event is a blast for me.” With a little help from Mother Nature, McCue feels the course too will be in tiptop shape for the tournament. “With the number of hours that my assistant (Jeremy Clark) and I are logging now, things are really coming together,” McCue said. “Our Tournament Director, Matthew Schulze, and his team of volunteers also are working hard to give the girls a tournament to remember.” Speaking of volunteers, the tournament can use all the help it can get. “We think the more, the better when it comes to volunteers,” Schulze said. Duties include driving carts, spotting golf balls, crowd control and other assorted duties.
