Dogs have their day at church festival By Paul Irvin Special Correspondent

The expression, every dog has its day, came true for approximately 225 dogs this past Saturday at Goochland Baptist Church as they held their Dogs Day event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. This year’s festival, just as the last two years, drew a large crowd of about 500 people and their dogs and the church’s goal to reach out to the community was achieved. “I think we had another great event. I think a lot of people had a wonderful time loving on each other and loving on the dogs,” said Dean Frazeur, Pastor of Goochland Baptist Church. “That’s what it’s really about. It’s about love whether you have four feet or two feet.” The creation of Dogs Day came about as a result of a visit by Pastor Dean and Teri Frank, church member, to a local blessing of the animals event four years ago. The two talked about how Goochland Baptist Church could offer a greater potential to this type of event. “How can we really expand the Kingdom’s work through the blessing of the animals? So everything grew from there,” said Frazeur. Fifteen vendors attended

the event to offer visitors a wide range of services and products related to dog care. Invisible Fence Brand of Virginia attended the event for the first time this year. Courtney Dean, company representative, explained that an invisible fence is an affordable option to consider. “Invisible fence brand typically runs about half the cost of a traditional wooden fence,” said Dean. “When you are talking about big properties we are definitely a more economical solution for most people.” Dean added that the company’s goal is to keep animals safe. “We want to keep dogs and cats happy and safe. Let them play and exercise on their property while their owners relax inside.” A new addition to the event this year was a fashion show put on by a group called Models Supporting Animals. As each model walked the runway they were accompanied by a dog that needed a home. Nadine Rich, Models Supporting Animals representative, explained that her group does volunteer work at local pet rescues and fund raisers throughout the area. The group also does photo shoots with cerPhoto by Ken Odor tain breeds and different types of Robin Weil brought her two yorkies, Lucy and Gracy, to see Dogs > page 5

South Ceres Farm has been sold to the owners of Adams International School, who may use it for fund raising events and possibly revive the polo match once held there each year.

South Ceres Farm changes hands By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

South Ceres Farm, for years the site of the annual polo match fundraiser for Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services, has new owners. The 125-acre parcel is now the property of Tamra and Douglas Adams, who paid a reported $2.75 million for it. Tamra Adams said she was motivated to buy South Ceres to preserve the rural atmosphere of the area where her school, Adams International, just across Route 250 from South Ceres Farm, is located. She said she hopes there will be no commercial develop-

The chief administrative law judge at Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control (ABC) has joined an elite group as one of just 11 administrative judges nationwide who hold dual specialized certifications in administrative law. The Honorable Robert S. O’Neal completed the requirements July 12 for certificates in dispute resolution skills, where he obtained training and coursework as a professional mediator, and in administrative law adjudication skills, where he studied administrative law court management. His coursework was at the University of Nevada’s National Judicial College (NJC). Nationally since 2008 only 36 judges have received the certificate for dispute resolution skills and only 32 have received the certificate in administrative law adjudication. ABC is reaping the benefits of O’Neal’s training as a skilled mediator. In the past seven years the number of licensee cases settled without administrative hearings has increased from 5% (in 2002) to 60% (in 2012.) “Citizen licensees are a part of the administrative judicial process,” said O’Neal. “When they [licensees] can help craft their own solution under the Virginia administrative process act, the outcome benefits not only that licensee but other [licensees] in that our agency is able to give more personal service to those who do come to hearings.” From an administrative standpoint, O’Neal has implemented a more professional court management system. ABC’s hearings and appeals division analyzes all cases that are eligible for settlement offers before the hearing date. “If a licensee is not eligible we contact them for an offer in compromise,” he

said. O’Neal’s division also offers alternate dispute resolution options on every eligible violation case. For franchise rights cases and contested applications O’Neal’s division appoints a judge to act as third party neutral to ensure both parties have equal opportunities to discuss legal options for settlement other than litigation. O’Neal said 85 percent of franchise rights cases are settled without a hearing. This is good news for everyone, considering some cases can run for days. O’Neal recalled a case in 2006 that required a 7-day hearing with more than 150 exhibits and 1200 pages of transcripts. The typical case takes less than a day. O’Neal’s NJC training also led him to expanding ABC’s judicial web presence. Various pages on the agency’s web site define key terms, explain the hearings process, list suggested penalties for first offenses and post the upcoming docket. This greater web presence provides more comprehensive resources for licensees. NJC’s professional certificate in judicial development is an innovative program designed for judges who want to concentrate their studies in a focused academic area. The certification is a hallmark of study that complements existing degrees. Judges who earn these certificates achieve a higher level of judicial expertise, skill and knowledge. As ABC’s chief administrative law judge since 2001, O’Neal oversees administrative hearings for all administrative infractions and violations committed by ABC licensees, processing applications for ABC licenses opposed by citizens or government entities and providing a neutral forum for resolution of franchise disputes between manufactures and distributors of alcohol products in Virginia. He also oversees the appeals processes and provision of legal support services to the ABC Board. The Maidens resident also serves as president of the Virginia Association of Administrative Law Judges and Hearing Officers (VAALJHO). He is also a charter mentor for administrative law judges throughout the United States and Canada by providing training, coaching and management advice to state, local,

federal and tribal administrative law judges and hearing officers. He serves on the board of governors of the National Association of Administrative Law Judiciary (NAALJ). A graduate of the National Judicial College at the University of Nevada/ Reno, O’Neal holds a master’s degree in administration of justice from Virginia Commonwealth University, a bachelor’s degree summa cum laude in criminal justice from Western Carolina University, and a certificate in regulatory law from the Clearinghouse on Law Enforcement and Regulation (CLEAR) from the University of Missouri School of Law. O’Neal has 29 years of progressively responsible government service experience in state, local and county government agencies. Before coming to ABC, he served in various positions including Assistant Director of Investigations, Senior Policy Analyst and Court Services Program Manager for the Virginia Department of Motor Vehicles; Drug Enforcement Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services; and Investigations Administrator for the Virginia Department of Health Professions. He began his government career as a local, county and campus police officer in the early 1980s. Contributed by Carol B. Mawyer of the Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control

School staff getting ready to open the doors staff members this year, Gretz said, including two new principals and a new director in school administration. The school system has about 430 staff members, which includes some 200 teachers and roughly 30 teacher assistants, Gretz said. Another important date is the beginning of football season for the Goochland Bulldogs, who open play at home on Aug. 31 against Fluvanna, Gretz said. The volleyball team’s first match is set for Aug. 23 against visiting Louisa, Gretz added. The school board also has established three new advisory committees, Gretz said, which are

the minority advisory committee, the grants writing committee and the energy conservation committee. “Obviously the minority advisory committee is going to be focused on raising achievement of all students and looking at the gap that exists between minority populations and the rest of our students, but really it’s going to be focused on raising achievement for everybody, Gretz said. “But the grants writing, they’re going to look for opportunities to get additional funds for the schools, energy conservation will look for opportunities to maximize efficiency and realize cost

savings. A new superintendent will be hired by the first part of September, Gretz said, adding that school staff is excited about the new year. “We’re thrilled about what I believe is going to be truly an extraordinary year, Gretz said. “We’re going to know who we are. We will have defined collectively what we believe, what we value and we’ll be marching to the same drummer towards a common goal. For more information, call Goochland County Public Schools at 556-5316 or visit www. glnd.k12.va.us

Goochland Elementary School Principal Tina McCay welcomes a returning student on the first day of school last August. This year’s first day of school is Aug. 20.

Staff at Goochland County Public Schools is busy getting ready for the opening day of school on Aug. 20. Peter M. “Pete Gretz, acting superintendent for the school system, explained why Goochland starts earlier than most neighboring jurisdictions. “Our calendar is developed using a committee of teacher leaders and community members and we pull together and we try to maximize instruction and then we look at what’s going to be easiest for parents and how to coordinate for staff, Gretz said. “We like getting out early June. If we back up a couple of weeks we’re going to be going into midJune and this seems to be something that works well for us. The projected enrollment for the 2012-2013 school year is 2,500 for grades K-12, Gretz said. During the summer, school officials have been working on establishing a strategic plan, Gretz added. “Our goal is – we’re not going

to be done – but our goal is that when school starts Aug. 20, that we’ll have a pretty good idea, we’ll be able to articulate pretty well to the community and to the students and to our staff at least as a leadership team and school board what it is we collectively agree to and what our non-negotiables will be, Gretz said. “It’s a real priority for us. Gretz also discussed some important dates for students and parents to be aware of. New student orientation for Goochland Middle School is slated for 6 p.m. on Aug. 14, Gretz said. Also scheduled on Aug. 14 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the middle school is what Gretz said has been called “business night. Gretz said parents and students can come in and take care of items related to registration, such as paying fees, buying a gym uniform and getting a locker. Business night for Goochland High School and the county’s three elementary schools is slated from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Aug. 15, Gretz said. Kindergarten orientation also is set for Aug. 15 from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the elemen-

New teachers will be involved in New Teacher Academy this week, Gretz said. “And then the following week, everyone else will come back and then we’ll have what we call pre-service week, Gretz said.“So that’s all of our in-house meetings and getting everybody back in the swing and then the following Monday, the 20th, we open the doors. Goochland County Public Schools will have about 30 new

“Craft beer customers always want something new,” said SeanThomas Pumphrey last week, standing next to the hops field on the family farm in western Goochland. And Pumphrey, 35, plans on giving it to them. A former car salesman who grew up in South Richmond, Pumphrey said he got interested in beer in college, while majoring in history at the University of Montana. He also has an MBA from the University of Richmond. A home brewer for several years, Pumphrey is now realizing a dream, building a micro brewery on the 221-acre farm. Called Lickinghole Creek Craft Brewery, Pumphrey said he took the name from the creek that borders his property. “There’s a strong tradition in craft beers for local place names,” said Pumphrey, citing Dogfish Head Brewery in Maine, which took its name from an island in Maine. Creating a uniquely local selection of beers is Pumphrey’s plan, growing his own hops on

the same property where his brewery will be located. The flagship brew will be a Belgian style India Pale Ale, said Pumphrey. He’ll also do special offerings using the pumpkins, raspberries, blackberries and peaches that he’ll also grow on the farm. He envisions an initial capacity of 2,000 to 2,500

barrels of beer in the first year. “No one will be able to reproduce what we do,” said Pumphrey, explaining that once production starts, “the flavor of the land” will be embodied in his products. Growing his own hops and other ingredients also goes along with his desire to “stay local” and reduce the carbon footprint of his operation. Pumphrey said he hopes to lay the foundation for the brewery building in a couple weeks and have “beer on the shelves in the first part of 2013.” But the majority of the production will be beer in kegs, which he plans to market to area bars and restaurants. “Goochland restaurants are very excited about it,” said Pumphrey. Licking Hole Creek Craft Brewery is a family affair, with Pumphrey’s wife Lisa as CEO of the LLC. He also has a partner, Farris Loutfi, a fellow University of Richmond MBA

graduate. Pumphrey is currently interviewing candidates for his head brewer position, with applicants coming from as far away as Oregon and Massachusetts. “This is a unique opportunity for them,” said Pumphrey. “They may be able to create some of their own beers.” He’ll also hire a farm manager to complete the crew. Pumphrey said his experience with growing hops “has wildly exceeded our expectations,” and although they won’t be ready for the first year’s output, they’ll be used as soon as they’re ready. Long term goals include canning his own beer, said Pumphrey. “Everyday is a new adventure,” said Pumphrey, who said he lives on his four-wheel John Deere Gator, traveling from field to field on the farm. His afternoon plan? Picking hops that are ready to be harvested.

animals to help bring awareness to animal related issues. “It’s a lot of fun and we love helping all types of animals,” said Rich. Kat Simons, radio personality from Lite 98, was on hand to emcee the event. Simons talked about why she loves being involved with events such as this. “It’s all about giving back to the community,” said Simons. “Plus getting dogs adopted. It raises the awareness of what’s going on in the community. That these dogs are being saved and they need homes. This type of outreach program is all fun and there is nothing negative about it. I want to be associated with people and things that are going forward and positive.” The Animal Adoption Rescue Foundation (AARF) attended Dogs Day and brought rescue dogs that were available for adoption. AARF is a non-profit all volunteer organization that began their mission in 1993 to rescue dogs and puppies. Cindy ChilesSmith, President of AARF, commented on the important elements of the adoption process. “It is very important to find the right match,” said Chiles-Smith. “That’s why we do an application. We screen it, go over it and make sure it’s a good match for the whole family.” Four applications were taken on animals during the Dogs Day event. One of the most popular events at Dogs Day was the “blessing of the dogs.” Pastor Dean led the crowd in a prayer and talked about the importance of how we should love and nurture all of the animals God has created. Frazeur completed the blessing by saying a brief prayer and laying a hand on each dog. A tail waging dog gone good time was had by all. Especially those on four legs.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

August 9, 2012

www.goochlandgazette.com

At a minimum Last week we got an email here at the Gazette from the office of U.S. Sen. Jim Webb, D-Va., outlining his proposal to raise the federal minimum wage to $9.80 in two stages over two years. As most everything does, it made me think back, this time to the first job I had in high school. Outside of being a paperboy for the Richmond News Leader for several years, the first time I was paid a wage was as a soda jerk/prescription delivery boy at a now-defunct Richmond drug store. Pay -- $1 per hour, minimum wage at the time I believe. It was a great job – as in most of the jobs I’ve managed to land over the years, I’d figured out a way to get someone to pay me for doing something I would have enjoyed doing anyway. Like manning the soda fountain making all manner of sweet delights for the clientele, which included many of my friends and neighbors. And driving around in a cool little VW bug delivering prescriptions and the odd chicken salad sandwich to hungry folks who couldn’t make it to the lunch counter on their own. What does this have to do with Sen. Webb’s minimum wage proposal? Not one darn thing, as I’m sure anyone reading this far has figured out. Because I was a kid, I was working for fun and getting paid for it. But these days there are a bunch of people out there who do need the money. They’re not working at all or working at low paying jobs and the question is: Will raising the federal minimum wage law help them, and the nation, or not? As always, when a minimum wage increase is contemplated, conservatives argue raising it will price some workers out of the labor market entirely. Liberals will likely maintain that no one can live on $7.25 an hour. Of course they are right. At 40 hours a week, that’s $15,800 a year. But if Congress should raise it, will it help some at the cost of others who as a result won’t be hired at all?

News from you – we want it Readers may have noticed a yellow box in last week’s Gazette encouraging them to send in their news. At least we hope they did, that’s why we splashed that bright yellow all over it! Bottom line is, we want folks to tell us about what’s going on in the community that might be of interest to their friends and neighbors. Because if we don’t know about it, we can’t print it. So send it in and we’ll see about getting it in print or on our website. - Ken Odor

Letters to the Editor Broadband committee doing a great job At last weeks’ county broadband committee meeting it was evident that Mr. Alvarez and his committee are doing an admirable job. Composed of elected and appointed county officials, citizens with technical and business expertise, invited experts and interested parties and citizens, the committee demonstrated what can be done when serious people come together to address a long standing county problem in a manner that left me believing that our entire county could benefit both

in the short and long term. It struck me that the benefits that such a successful ending would enhance many aspects of county life from , education, public safety, the ability of its citizens to perform more of what is currently being done “online.” This type of service will be viewed in the future the way car radios and air conditioners are taken for granted today and were derided in their infancy as being an unnecessary excess. Who would buy a car or a house without these devices today? I look forward to the broader public debate on this issue and I

firmly believe that this well led committee will arrive at recommendations that will bring this closer to reality and the county closer to what is the 21st century. Richard Carchman Columbia Editor’s Note: The Goochland High Speed Internet Committee is scheduled to hold Town Hall meetings at 7 p.m. on Aug. 15 at Byrd E.S. and Aug. 22 at Company 3 Firehouse in Centerville. see Letters > page 7

Cantor smeared by Democrats? Scott Turner owes Mr. Cantor an apology. In a recent letter, Mr. Turner accused Eric Cantor of receiving tainted money from a supporter named Sheldon Adelson. The story regarding this “tainted” money was a smear campaign by the DCCC (Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee), who subsequently had to retract and apologize directly to Mr.

Adelson and his family. The Wall Street Journal published this story and the exact words from the DCCC were: “In press statements issued on June 29 and July 2, 2012, the DCCC made unsubstantiated allegations that attacked Sheldon Adelson, a supporter of the opposing party. This was wrong. The statements were untrue and unfair and we retract them,” the DCCC wrote. “The DCCC extends its sincere apology to Mr. Adelson and his family for any injury we have caused.” The DCCC was especially motivated by the fact that it

Farm Bureau donates to Agriculture in the Classroom Contributed Report

Goochland County Farm Bureau is pleased to announce a donation to Virginia’s Agriculture in the Classroom program to help that organization conduct agriculture-related programs and workshops for teachers in elementary and middle schools around the state. The donation is part of the organization’s continuing support of local and Virginia agriculture. “We chose to support Agriculture in the Classroom because we feel it is important that children learn about agriculture. This program is making that possible because it reaches so many teachers each year,” said Steve Bostic, president of Goochland Farm Bureau. Bostic noted that, in addition to supporting AITC, the county Farm Bureau also actively supports agriculture by mentoring legislation, working with local elected officials, offering scholarships, and supporting the Goochland County 4-H Club.

“We are so appreciative of all our donors, especially county Farm Bureaus who give us so much support, because their generous donations make our work possible,” said AITC Executive Director Karen Davis. Virginia AITC is part of a nationwide effort to help teachers and students understand and appreciate agriculture, which is Virginia’s and the nation’s largest industry. The program provides training and material to more than 2,000 teachers and pre-service teachers each year, and its website at agintheclass.org provides teachers with Standards of Learning-aligned lessons, literacy activities and more. All AITC services are provided to schools and teachers at no cost. The AITC program is funded by donations received through the Virginia Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom. Goochland Family YMCA offers kids fun in the sun Contributed Report

Before video games, iPods and MP3 players ruled playtime, children enjoyed running around, playing sports and enjoying the fresh air. Those good old days have returned this summer at the YMCA Camp Gooch, a day camp program offered at the Goochland Family YMCA. “Our goal here at YMCA Camp Gooch is to create a meaningful, engaged and cooperative environment where kids can be kids. Doing so gives campers a quality experience that instills character-building, self development and promotes healthy living,” said Jan Kenney, program director at the Goochland Family YMCA. With over 45 acres of woodlands, lakes, streams and fields, Camp Gooch

provides the opportunity for children and youth to engage in outdoor activities, discover nature and enjoy the natural environment, while acquiring new skills, building selfconfidence and establishing lasting friendships. Activities include canoeing, fort building, archery, nature discovery and more. “Camp Gooch is about changing lives one child at a time,” said Kenney. “Last week, our camp participated in ‘Olympics at the Y.’ Each counselor, along with their group, challenged their opponents with a little bit of fun competition in all of the games. The kids loved it and it was a great way for them to learn teamwork.” On average, the camp serves 75 children. As a nonprofit, the Y relies on the generosity of volunteers, members and corporations to continue to serve the

community. Recently, CarMax, the nation’s largest retailer of used cars, donated 32 bikes to the campers. The gift was part of CarMax’s Summit Program, which helps the company build successful leaders, as well as creates valuable partnerships with local area nonprofit organizations. “Our new Summit Program is a unique training tool that incorporates our focus on developing associates, supporting our community, and the importance of wellness,” said Debbie Edwards, manager of talent management. “We know the campers will enjoy the bikes, and we look forward to spending time with children at local YMCA’s as our Summit Program continues.” Every week, the Goochland Y serves an average of 75 children ages 3-12 years old. The camp offers 11 one-week sessions Monday-Friday from 7:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. For more infor-

Goochland community backs hometown hero Diamond pays tribute to Justin Verlander By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

While Goochland native and Detroit Tiger All-Star pitcher Justin Verlander toiled away on the mound against a pesky Boston Red Sox team, thousands of his friends, family and supporters gathered at The Diamond last Tuesday to celebrate the hometown hero’s accomplishments. It was Goochland Day at The Diamond so the Flying Squirrels and HealthSouth rewarded many celebrants with a Justin Verlander bobblehead doll that sported the likeness of the pitcher decked out in his GHS uniform. “I think this is a great show of support from the Goochland community,” said Justin’s younger brother, Ben, before throwing out the ceremonial first pitch. “They’ve always supported us and have always been there.” Ben is a rising junior at ODU and like his brother also a graduate of Goochland High School. “I’ve seen so many of my old friends and coaches so it’s really been a special evening,” he said. A sea of red dominated the Diamond seating on both levels, and many took the time to meet the All-Star’s family up close and personal. Kathy and Dick Verlander signed autographs and reminisced with fans about Justin’s old days in Goochland. They also signed copies of their new book. You might expect a narrative of how baseball parents raised a prodigy type account, but “Rocks Across the Pond: Lessons Learned, Stories Told” offers much more. It provides a realistic recollection of how normal parents encouraged

their children to pursue their dreams, the journey and the positive message that evolves. “The book is a little bit about baseball and a lot about life; and a lot about us raising our children,” Kathy said. “It’s about lessons learned. We didn’t know anything about raising baseball players and we didn’t know what we had on our hands. We learned a lot along the way.” Richard agreed and said the book could help parents raising children with dreams. “There are lots of books on how to pitch, catch or hit a baseball, but when it comes to parenting, there isn’t much. We thought we had perspective after raising our two boys.”

Last week the Richmond Flying Squirrels paid tribute to Goochland County and local baseball hero Justin Verlander. Above: Jennifer Ruffner, Ben, Kathy and Richard Verlander were on hand to represent Justin who was busy playing the Red Sox. At left: The Flying Squirrels gave out Justin Verlander bobblehead dolls to fans who attended the special night at the Diamond. The doll was decorated with the uniform Verlander wore during his playing days in Goochland.

Neither of the Verlanders consider themselves gifted athletes, although Kathy did play high school tennis. Like Kathy, Richard didn’t realize he had a super star on his hands, but he did have an inkling of the possibilities in an early encounter with Justin. “We were throwing rocks across the lake when he was about 10 year old, and I challenged him to a distance contest,” Richard said. “Mine went half way across and his flew all the way over the little pond at Deep Run Park. The rock ended up in the woods, and I knew he

had a strong arm.” Goochland publisher and photographer Wayne Dementi provided most of the photos for the locally produced book. Dementi said working with the Verlanders was more pleasure than pain, and thinks the finished product is a unique insight in to the still ongoing Verlander saga. “It’s really been a fun project,” Dementi said. “Richard and I worked at the phone company together. He was president of the union and was in charge of union-management relations,” he added. What seemed like an adversarial relationship quickly blossomed into a friendship. “We’d talk about our kids and base-

ball. All these years later, we’re good friends,” Dementi said. The Diamond was a great chance for local fans to show their appreciation for Justin’s accomplishments. “Parney did a great job with this,” Dementi said referring to Squirrels vice president Todd Parnell. “What makes this so special is that you’ve got a local guy from a great family who spends time in the community in the off-season and by the way, he’s a guy who had one of the greatest seasons of any pitcher in Major League history,” Parnell said. “These bobbleheads will remind fans of Justin’s accomplishments, but more importantly, they will remind folks that he is from Central Virginia and that’s something people

should be proud of.” The celebration last week was icing on the cake for the Verlanders, who rushed back to Richmond to attend. “It’s been a whirlwind of a week,” Kathy said. “We just got back from Detroit this afternoon at 3:15. We were really excited about tonight and seeing so many of our friends and family.” Kathy and her American League MVP, Cy Young award winning son keep in touch in modern fashion. “Like most young people, I’m not sure he knows how to talk on the phone anymore so we text a lot,” she said. The couple speaks to community groups and young children, relaying a message of

dreaming big. “I really enjoy talking to the kids and seeing what is going on in those tiny minds,” Richard said. He doesn’t tout his status as a major league dad, but the pride he feels for his son is evident as he proudly displays a giant sized ring on his finger. “That’s Justin’s All-Star ring from this year,” he beamed. His son was the starting pitcher for the American League in this year’s All-Star game. For Kathy, the whirlwind continues, and sometimes, she has to pinch herself to realize just where the dream started and where it has landed. Could she have ever imagined such an outcome? “We never dreamed a dream this big.”

H-SC and R-MC top ODAC preseason poll Goochland’s Athey will step up role at Shenandoah By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

In a poll of league coaches, longtime rivals HampdenSydney and Randolph-Macon came out on top in the 2012 ODAC preseason football poll. H-SC edged R-MC in points 46-to-44 and first place votes 4-to-3. Washington and Lee received 37 points and one first place vote while Bridgewater picked up 32 points. Emory & Henry and Catholic came in fifth and sixth while Guilford and league newcomer Shenandoah tied for seventh with 11 points each. HAMPDEN-SYDNEY (83, 5-1 ODAC) will attempt to become the first ODAC team to win back-to-back league titles since Bridgewater claimed five straight from 2001-05. The Tigers’ only suffered one league loss last year but it came in the regular season finale at the hands of Randolph-Macon. “We’ve got a balanced league and picked to finish first I guess the bulls eye is on us again,” said H-SC head coach Marty Favret. “But we’re excited for a lot of different reasons.” H-SC comes into the 2012 season having lost some of the top names in program history to graduation- All-American’s Ben Rogers (OL) and Kyle Vance (WR) along with All-ODAC players Kirk Rohle (RB), Travis Lane (QB) and Sean Cavanagh (WR) are all gone. But the Tigers got a monumental boost when sophomore quarterback Nash Nance made the rare decision to leave a BCS Division I program for Division III, transferring from

the University of Tennessee to Hampden-Sydney. “I knew it was going to be a rare thing and there’s probably going to be a big bulls eye on my head,” Nash said. Favret believes Nash will be the focus of attention for fans and opponents. “Having Nash come in from an SEC school, there’s going to be a lot of buzz around the Tigers this year,” Favret said. “We’re excited to see what he’s all about.” Despite the accolades, Nash does not come into the season as a guaranteed lock for the quarterback slot and could face notable competition from freshman standout Kyle Farlow, who is the grandson of NASCAR’s Richard Petty. Though Rogers and Rohle are gone, Hanover County will continue to play a huge role in the Tigers’ success this season. Senior offensive lineman Tyler White (Atlee), senior linebacker Kenny Fryman (Hanover) and junior safety Steven Fogleman (Hanover) have all been named team captains. Senior halfback John Michael Sparagna (Atlee) played a big role in last year’s success but it is sophomores that could have the biggest impact this year. Defensive back Shreve Rohle (Hanover) and linebacker Josh Doggett (Atlee) will take on more substantial roles with the Tigers’ defense this season. H-SC returns six starters on offense and seven defensive starters from a season ago. Fryman led the team with 102 tackles, 15 tackles for a loss and 2.5 sacks last year. Fogleman, who missed most of last season due to injury, returns after being second on the team with 92 tackles as a sophomore. Sophomore safety John Moore (Blessed SacramentHuguenot) returns as a starter after recording 53 tackles and 4.5 TFL in 2011.

Offensive lineman Robert Pilcher (Benedictine) is a freshman on this year’s squad. Hampden-Sydney opens their season at Averett on Sept. 1. RANDOLPH-MACON (82, 4-2) comes into 2012 with a lot of momentum after the young team knocked off rival Hampden-Sydney in the season finale. The Yellow Jackets steadily improved as the season progressed and were possibly the best team in the country not to make the playoffs last year. In his first year of college football, quarterback Zac Naccarato threw for 2,105 yards, 14 passing touchdowns and had six rushing TDs to earn ODAC Rookie of the Year honors. With eight returning starters on both offense and defense, and a year of seasoning, Naccarato should be even better in 2012. “We have a good mix of guys coming back, a lot of veterans that have started and played a lot of minutes and a mix of young football players that we’re really excited about,” said R-MC head coach Pedro Arruza. “We have 24 seniors back again this year so we feel like we’re in a pretty good place as a program.” Seasoned veterans, running back Drake Sanders, wide receiver Luke Sellars, halfback Vance Hendren (Powhatan), tight ends Dan Crouch and Zach Midulla (J.R. Tucker), all seniors, return along with junior wideout Christian Cook. With 24 career starts, senior O-lineman Bryan Overstreet (Patrick Henry) has more experience than any other member of the offense. Senior Jordan Zentz will also be back on the line. The experienced defense boasts junior linebacker Abel

Simpson, who was the teams’ second leading tackler a season ago while senior cornerback Brandon Harrison, who has 30 career starts, tied with junior safety Andrew Leonard for third most tackles on the squad. Linebacker David Fetter (Lee-Davis) was a powerful force last season as was Billy Knarr at safety. Ian Candelaria has 18 career starts on the defensive line and defensive tackle Cross Trued nine. All are seniors. Senior kicker Josh Storm comes into the season as one of the best in the nation. Storm has been named to the 2012 Fred Mitchell Award watch list, which is handed out to the best kicker among FCS, Div. II, Div. III, NAIA and NJCAA football teams. “We’re coming into the season ready,” Sanders said. “We’re hungry. We’re ready.” Junior quarterback Greg Petrohovich (Benedictine) will serve as Naccarato’s backup this season. Other local players who could contribute this season include junior offensive lineman Austin Jordan (Goochland), freshman linebacker Jess McLaughlin (Goochland) and freshman offensive lineman John Mosier (Benedictine). Randolph-Macon opens their season at Johns Hopkins on Sept. 1 but the following week will be a historic moment for fans when the renovated Day Field is dedicated for their home opener against Averett. Under new head coach Scott Abell, WASHINGTON AND LEE (8-2, 5-1 ODAC) will look for a new quarterback but returns senior option back Luke Heinsohn (900 yds, 13 TDs) as well as senior slot backs Brett Murry (1,561 allpurpose yards, 867 rushing, 13

TDs) and Russell Stewart (511 yards, 5 TDs). On defense, preseason AllAmerican senior safety Jake Pelton (76 tkls, 2 INTs, 7 PBUs) will be the leader. Defensive lineman Tim Joyce (Benedictine) is in his first year with the Generals. BRIDGEWATER (6-4, 3-3) returns four starters on offense and five on defense. The Eagles will look to senior quarterback Carlos Gonzalez for offensive leadership and senior defensive linemen Danny Grogg and Joel Frances to stop opponents. EMORY & HENRY (5-5, 2-4) can boast experience by returning a majority of their starters from a season ago- 10 on offense, seven on defense and four on special teams. ODAC Defensive Player of the Year, senior linebacker Devan Sproles (61 tkls, 6 INTs) will lead the Wasps while junior Kyle Boden (2,569 yds, 21 TDs) returns at quarterback. CATHOLIC (5-5, 1-5) also returns the bulk of its starting lineup from a season ago (9defense, 8-offense) and should be much improved from last year. Senior quarterback Greg Cordivari threw for 3,282 yards and 25 TDs last season while junior running back Mike Pitsenberger opened up the defense with 899 yards rushing and 7 TDs. The Cardinals’ defense as led by junior linebacker Conor Stueckler who recorded 95 tackles, 2 INTs and 2 fumble recoveries in 2011. GUILFORD (2-8, 1-5) was young last season and returns eight starters on offense and six on defense in 2012. Junior Zac Halbert returns at quarterback as does classmate Lawrence Blake at wide receiver. But the Quakers strength will be

in their defense. Three sophomores, linebacker Robert Smith and DBs Hunter English and Satiir Stevenson led the defense last season and should do the same in 2012. Junior Kevin Tiller II (Benedictine) is projected to start at wide receiver this season for Guilford. SHENANDOAH (6-4, 5-2 USA South) enters the ODAC with holes to fill but area players should take on substantial roles in the team’s success this season. Sophomore quarterback Phillip Gardner (LeeDavis) is currently projected as the starter in the pocket this season. He will have the benefit of the Hornets’ top returning offensive lineman, senior Jacob Brent (Lee-Davis) at tackle. As a junior, Brent was named an Honorable Mention preseason All-American by Beyond Sports Network. At the end of the season he was a first team All-USA South member as well as third team All-Region for D3football.com. Senior running back Carl Joseph recorded 720 yards rushing last season while wide receiver Qiydaar Murphy had 58 receptions for 609 yards through the air. Another player looking to step up this season is senior fullback PJ Athey (Goochland). “He’s played a ton of ball for us at fullback and like, kind of that two back system,” said defensive coordinator Brook McCullough. “PJ has done a great job for us.” On defense, the Hornets will rely on junior linebacker Josh Rogers, senior lineman Nick Erdman (Cosby) and junior safety Byron Mitchell. Another easily recognizable name with the Hornets is former Washington Redskins star Joe Jacoby who has served as Shenandoah’s offensive line coach since 2009.

CANCER - Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, if you haven’t done so already, plan a trip to somewhere for a respite from the grind. Try to book something that is outside of your comfort zone.

LIBRA - Sept 23/Oct 23 There’s more than meets the eye to a particular situation, but you seem biased, Libra. Consider all sides of the situation before you decide which side you’re on.

CAPRICORN - Dec 22/Jan 20 There is no easy way around the work you have to get done, Capricorn, but there are plenty of helpers who may be able to pitch in and lend a hand.

TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, it’s difficult when you feel like you’re being pulled in too many directions. This may require sitting down and making a priority list to get started.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Leo, your energy is infectious and many people notice how well you keep going when others will simply tire out. You’ll need that energy for work this week, too.

SCORPIO - Oct 24/Nov 22 It’s finally time for you to relax, Scorpio. After weeks of running here and there, you now have the opportunity to simply kick up your feet and enjoy yourself.

AQUARIUS - Jan 21/Feb 18 Stop looking to others for solutions to your problems, Aquarius. The only one who is qualified to handle them is you and possibly a spouse or romantic partner.

GEMINI - May 22/Jun 21 Don’t try to mask your emotions this week, Gemini. It is OK if others see the truth about how you feel. Let others explore the honesty in your expression and actions.

VIRGO - Aug 24/Sept 22 Virgo, a big opportunity comes your way that you shouldn’t pass up. Resist the urge to point out all of the negatives and focus only on the positives for the time being.

SAGITTARIUS - Nov 23/Dec 21 What you may view as some innocent comments could be viewed much differently from someone else, Sagittarius. It’s better to censor yourself when you can.

PISCES - Feb 19/Mar 20 Pisces, this week you feel like you’re walking around on a cloud. But you know well you have everything handled.
