Goochland man’s clever trap catches wayward bull By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland resident Wilford Robinson may not be a professional athlete, but that didn’t stop the 89-yearold retired plumber from making what very well could be dubbed the catch of the year recently. It all started when Robinson got word that a young zebu — a bovine originally from south Asia — had slipped away from a property near Robinson’s home on Three Chopt Road. While the 300-pound zebu didn’t likely pose an immediate threat, according to its owner, ROBINSON Leslie Davis, catching the wily creature proved quite a task. The animal refused to let anyone approach it, and attempts to lure it with hay and other treats proved fruitless.

Local barbecue spot closes After 10 years in business, a local Goochland favorite has closed. CD’s BBQ, located on Matthews Lane just off Broad Street near Short Pump, had become a well-known spot for barbecue, ribs and more. Its unique set-up — essential-
ly a food truck-style operation with tables set up around it — also distinguished it from other local eateries. According to owner CD Ratcliffe, recent health problems led him to the difficult decision that he could no longer keep the restaurant open.

It was then that Robinson, who founded W.S. Robinson and Son Plumbing in 1962 and only recently passed the company on to his son, came up with his plan. Attaching one end of a long, sturdy rope to a support post on a small shed, Robinson tied a loose loop at the other end. He then draped the loop over the handles of a wheelbarrow, directly over a bucket with a small salt block in it. To complete the trap, he attached a 4x4 cast iron flange — commonly used in plumbing installation — near the loose end of the rope. When the wayward zebu unwittingly put its head through the loop to get to the salt block, the flange pulled the rope securely around its neck. If the zebu wasn’t thrilled to have been caught— “He didn’t like me one bit,” recalled Robinson, laughing —Davis was certainly pleased to be able to bring the animal home. Asked where he found the inspiration for his plan, Robinson just smiled and shrugged off any notion that he did anything special. His was willing to admit, however, that his tenacity might be a family trait. His grandfather used to tell people he never backed down from any challenge, Robinson said cheerfully, “so I guess I’m just a chip off the old block.”

‘Reflections’ contest winners honored Contributed report
Families, students, and PTA volunteers gathered at the newly renovated Central High School Cultural Center & Educational Complex on Dogtown Road on Saturday, Dec. 15, to celebrate and honor the PTA Reflections artists of Goochland Elementary School. Goochland Middle School honored its Reflections participants on Thursday, Dec. 13, in the Goochland High School auditorium. These students rose to the challenge to reflect on the theme, “Heroes Around Me” and interpret it through the arts. Heidi Dewey, PTA Reflections Chair at GES, said she enjoyed the unique perspectives of the elementary students, who offered many unique perspectives and identified heroes in their families, among their friends, in the community, and even in their gardens and imaginations. The PTA Reflections program was established in 1969, and this 2018-19 school year celebrates 50 years of themes translated into art. This year’s participants can say, “I entered

Path to understanding often involves humility By Roslyn Ryan Editor
For as long as I live, I will never forget one of the very first stories I covered many years ago as the brand new sports reporter for my hometown paper.
It was an early-season private school basketball game, the outcome of which would likely soon be forgotten even by the players themselves, and yet I prepared for the assignment as if it was LakersPistons circa 1989. Desperate to do a good job, I

that could prevent me from crafting a truly magnificent piece of sports journalism, save for one small issue: I knew very, very little about basketball. As it turned out, I had been hired more for my enthusiasm and gensee Questions > 7

Dear Editor, We want to take a moment to thank everyone from the bottom of our hearts for their kindness and generosity for the children in St.Mary’s hospital during the holidays. Our family, friends and community are truly awesome! With your help, Alex was able to have his wish for a successful toy drive come true again this year. We had two vehicles completely loaded with toys and other donations to deliver. The Child Life Department and Pediatric units at the hospital were very grateful for all that they received. We are eternally grateful for you all because this couldn’t be successful without you. Irresponsible area hunters engaging in dangerous behavior Dear Editor, Over many years we have allowed folks to hunt on part of our property and they have been lawful and respectful. CHANGER Former GHS basketball and football star embracing new role with European professional volleyball team By Nick Vandeloecht Sport Editor
GOOCHLAND – Brandon Henry did not play volleyball growing up. But he was definitely an athlete. At Goochland High School he played basketball and football, and he also ran track. He was a two-way starter on the gridiron for the 2009 Jefferson District championship winning Bulldogs team, and he holds the school record for the high jump (6’6”). The Class of 2010 Goochland alum also played basketball for a year at Patrick Henry Community College. Then, one night, about four to five years ago, friends of Henry – who also happened to be the Goochland volleyball coaches – had him come hang out with them at Richmond Volleyball Club. They were also trying to get him to play. see Henryy > 10 Brandon Henry, a Goochland High School graduate, will play volleyball for VC Lorentzweiler in Luxembourg in 2019. Goochland boys basketball splits invite, opening week Staff Reports
GOOCHLAND - The Bulldogs rounded out their first week with the holiday invitational on Thursday and Friday at Goochland High School, going 1-1 in the invite and 2-2 on the week to open the season. The hosting Bulldogs on Thursday edged King William 37-35. Deion Harwood poured in 18 points and added 7 rebounds. Isaiah Matovu chipped in 10 points. The Bulldogs then took a 53-40 loss to Broadway on Friday despite featuring a 17-point night from Quincy Snead, who knocked down four threepointers in the contest, including two to give his team a 6-0 game-opening lead. Harwood scored nine of his 11 points on Friday in the second half and shot
five-for-six from the free throw line. Broadway was led by six-foot-six Seth Keim, who rolled out 22 points. Jaxson Jameson scored 13, including nine in the first quarter. Harwood, Snead, Keim and Jameson were among the players who made the Goochland Holiday Basketball Invitational’s all-tournament team. In addition to King William, Goochland also beat James River District rival Cumberland on Tuesday at home. Harwood in that contest led his team with 18 points. Goochland played at Bluestone on Wednesday, Jan. 2 and returns home on Friday, Jan. 4, to host Randolph-Henry at 7 p.m.
Bulldogs wrestling posts win over Fluvanna Staff Reports
GOOCHLAND – Goochland Wrestling’s tri-meet at home on Wednesday, Dec. 19 resulted in a win over Fluvanna (60-18) and a loss to Deep Run (51-27). Nadder noted that his team in the meet was forfeiting two weight classes. “We knew we were shooting from behind the
eight ball,” Nadder said, though he added of his wrestlers: “I feel like they could’ve done better. If one or two matches would’ve gone our way, we would’ve [been] real close to winning.” The Bulldogs did see a two-win performance on Wednesday from Romeo Moreno, with his teammates Max Moreno, Jacob
Massey and John Daley also among the winners. “We have an extremely hard schedule for our experience,” Nadder said. “But what I’m trying to do is get us prepared for the postseason so that when we get there, we will have wrestled as good or better competition already.” see Wrestling > 10

Visiting Goochland girls rally but come up short in contest against King William By Dave Lawrence Richmond Suburban News
CENTRAL GARAGE – In the third quarter, King William Girls Basketball looked like it might run away with the game in its contest versus visiting Goochland on Dec. 17. But the Bulldogs had other ideas; they closed the gap as time ran out. But King William ultimately held on to edge its Region 2A rival 45-41. Several times in the game, the Cavaliers built up substantial leads over Goochland, only to see the Bulldogs close the gap, such as in the final minutes of the first half when Goochland erased a 17-11 King William lead to head into intermission with the game knotted up at 17-all. The Cavaliers outscored the Bulldogs 16-6 in the third quarter to take a 33-23 lead, but again, Goochland fought back and nearly overtook King William, closing to within two points, in the final minutes of the game. The Bulldog comeback forced Cavalier head coach Kerry Johnson to call a timeout.
Henry continued from >9 “I really did not have any plans on playing,” he said. But they talked him into it. Now, just a few years after beginning his journey on the volleyball court, the versatile athlete is taking his talents overseas to Luxembourg. Henry will play for the VC Lorentzweiler volleyball team as an outside hitter. He’s looking to head out there on Jan. 6 and join his new team during the second half of its current season. “I’m just thankful for all the help I had in the beginning to get me to where I’m at now,” he said. Henry, who is six feet Brandon Henry tall, looks forward to bringing his hustle, energy and offense to his new team; he added that he “can jump a little bit which helps being undersized.” He’s also looking forward to traveling, meeting
“I’m just thankful for all the help I had in the beginning to get me to where I’m at now.”
“Basically it was to calm them, [remind them to] keep their spacing – relax – get the ball, pass it back and forth and move the ball up and down the floor,” he said. “We don’t have to rush. … We have the lead and the only thing we have to beat now is the clock.” The talk worked. The Cavaliers settled down and, with the help of some fouls – and solid shooting from the line – they held firm at the end. Before the fourth quarter began, Goochland head coach James Harris had been doing some talking of his own to rally his troops. “Ten points is not a big lead,” Harris said. “Basically I just told them to take one possession at a time, one play at a time. It’s going to come.” Goochland had the big scorers, with the game’s only double-figure shooters in Lanaysia Gonzalez and Blake Thomas with 11 points apiece. But the Cavaliers had the team effort. Of the 14 players King William put on the floor, 10 scored, and of those 10, half scored five or more points. The Cavaliers were led by Emma Anderson and Jamie Hooper with eight points apiece. Throughout the game, the two teams showed their scrappy faces as the team evolved into something of a
jump-ball fest. “I consider Goochland just like us: scrappy, play with heart, play with passion,” Johnson said. “They want it just as bad as we do.” Goochland Girls Basketball would go on to bounce back with a 63-43 win over Cumberland the following day to improve to 4-2. The Bulldogs were then slated to play at Bluestone on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Goochland’s next game is Friday, Jan. 4 at Randolph-Henry. new people and experiencing a different culture, and to doing “everything I wanted to do with basketball” in the sport of volleyball. It was when Henry started to not only compete against athletes who played for colleges and at a high level, but also match up well against them, that he saw he could possibly do something with his current sport. He went to the adult nationals competition in Detroit as a team member of the Smokin Aces in 2015. The Double B division in which he played featured about 60 different teams, and he and his team ended up winning their division that year. Henry won MVP honors. Henry then joined Bamboo at the A division and played in national competitions over the past three seasons in Orlando, Minnesota and Dallas. He and his team placed fourth in the Dallas competition. H e said the opportunity to play in Luxembourg came about when the team was actually looking at one of Henry’s friends and trying to get him to play there, but his friend had already signed elsewhere, so he gave the team Henry’s information. The team contacted Henry, and he said that they stayed in contact for a while before “things took off.” Henry enjoys the atmosphere of the volleyball world. “Almost everywhere you go, whether you know the people or you don’t, it’s always family,” he said. “I’ve
met people on the current U.S. National team. I talked trash to Lloy Ball, the Olympic center from 2008. I played against a guy who’s setting in the top division overseas right now.” Playing against high-level opponents in the national tournaments from Detroit to Dallas made Henry a smarter player, he said. “I didn’t always try to hit the ball straight down,” Henry said. “It was: just hitting the ball to get a point – not necessarily trying to hit the floor, but just hitting it off their hands or just letting the other team make a mistake.” He spoke to being able to incorporate misdirection plays like the lighter kills or dinks over the net “when needed;” he doesn’t want to utilize them too much because he doesn’t want opposing defenses to get used to it, but they’re in his back pocket when he needs them. From his playing days at Goochland High School, Henry learned to not panic when his team is down, and also to not let up when his team is winning. With VC Lorentzweiler, Henry hopes to keep getting that high-level volleyball experience, continue improving as a player and then share what he learns with the kids he coached in Goochland when he was a volunteer there for three years. “I enjoyed helping out at Goochland,” he said. “Whenever they need me, I will always be there.”

Wrestling continued from >9 Nadder said that senior Romeo Moreno (138), junior John Daly (160) and senior Jacob Massey are among his wrestlers who are looking good in the season so far. He noted that Massey, who normally wrestles at 220, is currently wrestling heavyweight. Nadder added of Daly: “Last year was his first year and he really struggled because he was wrestling big guys, but he has really picked it up this year and I expect him to do well.” The next competition for Goochland Wrestling is the Amelia Invitational on Jan. 5. Nadder said that he is “hoping to have every weight class filled and everybody healthy.”
Building a young wrestling program Goochland Wrestling as an entity is young, as it is only in its fourth year of existence. Nadder has been with the program from the start, but he is in his second year as head coach. Goochland Wrestling doesn’t have a middle school program or any other type of feeder program, so usually, Nadder said, studentathletes will walk into the wrestling room for the first time without having wrestled before. As Nadder and the 201819 Bulldogs focus on growing, building and improving through the tough schedule at-hand, Nadder is also looking forward to a bright future. He noted that he has a lot of young student-athletes in the program, with three sixth graders and a few eighth graders whom he’s excited about. He added: “I think my eighth graders will all contribute next year.”

Letters continued from >6 and “No Trespass” signs but signs and gates mean nothing to these individuals. A consequence of this behavior is to attract unwanted animals, e.g. coyotes, which we already have problems with. Only our community can act to stop this kind of activity. How they do so must remain within the law but the time has come to put a stop to the people that undermine the beauty and safety of our community through their irresponsible and shameful behavior. The Department of Game
and Inland Fisheries has placed dumpsters across the State for deer carcass disposal (sites can be found on their website). They point out the health risks associated with indiscriminate dumping, including prions, which in deer are responsible for chronic wasting disease and can decimate their population if not controlled. There are other very serious and deadly related diseases that can affect cattle and people. Maybe “irresponsible” is not a strong enough word to describe this odious behavior.
