Spoonhower will serve as BOS chair for 2022 By Roslyn Ryan Editor

The Goochland County Board of Supervisors began its first meeting of the New Year on Jan. 19 by electing a new chairman for 2022, unanimously choosing District 2 representative Neil Spoonhower to lead the five-

member board. District 4 Supervisor Don Sharpe was elected as vice chair. Spoonhower, who, like Sharpe, was elected in 2019, thanked his fellow board members for their support as he settled into his new role, which had previously been held by District 3 representative John Lumpkins.

“I just really want to thank everyone, I am absolutely humbled and very appreciative of this opportunity to serve alongside new vice chair Don Sharpe and my other colleagues in this capacity,” said Spoonhower. “By far the last two years have been the most rewarding in my career. This is probably the best role I’ve

Board passes resolution on stance against discrimination By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Nearly two years after it was first proposed by members of the Goochland community, a resolution condemning discrimination has been approved by the Goochland County Board of Supervisors. The resolution, first proposed by the Goochland branch of the NAACP in the wake of the May 25, 2020, murder of Minneapolis resident George Floyd by police, had been brought up several times by Goochland NAACP president Wendy Hobbs. During the board’s Dec. 1, 2020, meeting, Hobbs demanded to know why supervisors would not commit to the resolution. “To me, drafting a resolution against racism, that’s a no-brainer,” said Hobbs then. “If you see [racism and discrimination] as wrong, why wouldn’t you do it?” Rosyln Ryan/Goochland Gazette

Sweet Winks has been at the Goochland Animal Shelter since September and although the staff loves seeing her every day, they know the perfect family is out there for her. Winks is 2-3 years old and when she first came to the shelter she was pretty shy. Throughout her months there she has become more social and enjoys the company of humans. She’s up to date on vaccines, spayed, and tested negative for FIV/FeLV and she is good with other cats. For more information on Winks, as well as the many more animals still in need of homes at the Goochland Animal Shelter, call (804) 556-5302. The shelter’s hours are Tuesday and Wednesday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m.; Thursday 10 a.m. – 7 p.m.; Friday 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and Saturday 10 a.m. -2 p.m. Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation to the shelter is asked to make donations payable to Goochland Animal Protection.

Chair continued from >1 continue to do the right thing for our citizens.” Spoonhower’s election as board chair represented a break with tradition, as the board’s policy in recent years has been to nominate the previous year’s vice chairman to the chairman’s role.

Resolution continued from >1 Board members, however, remained hesitant. As District 2 representative Neil Spoonhower explained, he didn’t want to simply do “the easy thing.” “We could draft a resolution, throw it in a drawer and move on,” said Spoonhower, making clear that he was speaking only for himself and not the board of supervisors as a whole. “For me to get behind something, I want to understand it.” During the board’s Aug. 4, 2021, meeting, then board chair Susan Lascolette announced the formation of a committee that would meet to discuss issues of racial discrimination and disparity in the community. “We as representatives on the board of supervisors have

In this case, outgoing vice chairman Ken Peterson explained to those in attendance that, since he had already served as chair twice, he thought the county would be best served by having a chairman who could use the role to learn and enhance their leadership skills. Peterson also thanked outgoing 2021 chairman John

Lumpkins for his steady leadership during a challenging year. Lumpkins, for his part, thanked his fellow board members for their support and expressed his optimism for the year ahead. Said Lumpkins, “I know we’re rolling into a great 2022.” The board also approved its 2022 meeting schedule during

the meeting on Wednesday, and a copy of the schedule is available at http://www. goochlandva.us/158/Boardof-Supervisors. Goochland’s Board of Supervisors regularly meets at 2 p.m. and 6 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month, and the third Tuesday of each month serves as a reserved date for meetings.

received correspondence from people in our community regarding racial discrimination in our county,” Lascolette said. “Goochland County Board of Supervisors, the County, and county staff do not tolerate unequal treatment of any citizen based on race, religion, creed or any other unlawful factor and we will not allow it in the future.” Said Lascolette, “We look forward to engaging with our community on this issue.” Now, as the board looks ahead to the coming year, Spoonhower says the lingering hesitation has given way to a new perspective. Shortly after being named as the chair for 2022, Spoonhower told those attending the Jan. 19 board meeting that he now supported the measure. “When this came up a year ago, this was based on a lot of actions that were outside

of Goochland County, and I didn’t know if it was appropriate for us to comment on things that didn’t happen here,” said Spoonhower. “But what I’ve seen after a year and a half is that we have citizens who feel that we are not engaging with them—and to me that is not the way that I ever thought to govern. I hope that this will be a way for us to move forward and to heal and address the issues that we need to address and work on.” While Spoonhower and three other supervisors voted in favor of the resolution, outgoing chairman John Lumpkins of District 3 declined to support it, citing in part the fact that a rejection of all forms of discrimination is already included in the board’s code of conduct. There were other issues as well, he said. “I don’t think this is respon-

sive, so I’m going to vote ‘no,’” said Lumpkins, “not because I’m opposed to the sentiment, which I clearly agree with, but I don’t think this is responsive.” Hobbs, for her part, said she appreciated the board’s efforts but also insisted there is work left to be done. “I have to agree with Mr. Lumpkins,” Hobbs said. “I think the issues raised a year and a half ago have not been fully addressed. But it is hopeful that the resolution passed today will lead to further discussions with a diverse group of citizens. It is a step in the forward direction, and we look forward to future discussions, particularly on issues that are germane to the AfricanAmerican community as well as other people of color. Please understand we appreciate what you did today, but it is not a one-and-done. We have to keep the discussion going.”

Chief: Entire community contributed to winter storm response By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When winter storm Frida slammed into Goochland on Jan. 3, many residents quickly realized that the weather event was set to leave behind a tremendous amount of damage in its wake. Fortunately, Goochland County Fire-Rescue Chief Eddie Ferguson told coun-

ty supervisors in his recent review of the county’s response to the storm, Goochland was well-prepared thanks to a number of steps taken by county leaders in recent years. New, four-wheel drive ambulances proved invaluable in the snow and ice, said Ferguson, and the 13,000 square-foot state-of-theart Company 6 firehouse in

Hadensville allowed the county to host Virginia National Guard troops deployed to assist with the storm response. In response to the event, the county also activated its Emergency Operations Center for only the second time, the first being during Hurricane Isabel in 2003. Of course, even with the key resources in place, Frida still took a massive toll on the

county. According to Ferguson, Goochland experienced over 9,000 power outages as trees, weighed down by ice and snow, began falling onto power lines. Those same trees made for particularly treacherous conditions for first responders, who found themselves having to cut their way in—and then out—of local neighborhoods when

responding to calls. At one point, said Ferguson, it took crews nearly an entire day to make it to the home of a resident in need of medical attention. Fortunately, he said, a number of residents came to the aide of deputies and firerescue crews, using their own chainsaws and equipment to help clear the roadways.

“This was really a wholecommunity approach,” Ferguson said. According to Ferguson’s report, Goochland 911 operators fielded 4,530 calls during the storm and the Sherriff’s Office received 615 calls for service. Between career personnel and volunteers, the response saw 4,190 man hours logged.

Training sessions will focus on youth mental health Contributed report

Almost everyone has the basic first aid skills needed for minor cuts, aches or pains, and most know when and how to seek additional help. But, the number of people in the community who know first aid for youth mental health or substance abuse is limited. Since Goochland County Public School (GCPS) students are in school at most eight hours a day, more community members with the skills and training to identify, understand, and respond to mental health or substance abuse challenges will greatly help youth in crisis. To meet that need, trained GCPS staff members are offering Youth Mental Health First Aid (YMHFA) sessions throughout the 2021-22 school year to anyone who has contact with the community’s children — parents, school staff, coaches, volunteers, youth organization leaders, and community members. The previously advertised Jan. 28 session is already at capacity, but a session will be held on Feb. 18, and additional sessions will be held on dates to be determined between March and May. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health challenges were the leading cause of disability and poor life outcomes in young people, with

up to one in five children ages 3 to 17 in the United States with a reported mental, emotional, developmental or behavioral disorder. “We definitely see those types of challenges in our schools,” said Jennifer Waggener, GCPS executive director of exceptional education. “Our mental health team is only so big, and we want to make sure that it’s not just our mental health team that is familiar with how to help students cope with mental challenges.” “The idea behind Youth Mental Health First Aid is that, just like regular first aid, you might find yourself in a position where you can assist a child or

teenager,” lead GCPS counselor and YMHFA-certified instructor Ashton Guza said. “We know that providing mental health aid to a young person can seem so overwhelming, especially when we’re talking about a crisis,” Guza said. “The awesome part about YMHFA is that it’s very clear that the end goal is not solving the challenge; the end goal is keeping that person safe and providing them the mental health or substance abuse first aid that they need while in the pursuit of professional care.” The pandemic has negatively affected many children, especially when contact with school staff and friends was

Adult Continuing Education Classes in Goochland Adult Education classes to prepare individuals in need of a GED or basic math and reading skills, workforce activities training, employability skills training, computer literacy training. Open enrollment through May 2022

limited. That’s one more reason why this first aid training is so necessary. “The impact of the pandemic has highlighted the need for people to be trained so many more of us can provide a bigger support net for a student in need,” GCPS mental health counselor and YMHFAcertified instructor Allison Mears said. To sign up for a Youth Mental Health First Aid session, a form is available at https:// shorturl.at/bdvyJ, and information about the program is available at https://www. mentalhealthfirstaid.org/. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

Forget all that comic book stuff, sometimes your hero comes wielding a chainsaw By Roslyn Ryan Editor

When it comes to the tools of the superhero trade, most of us don’t immediately think of a chainsaw. But on Jan. 3, as our area was broadsided by one of the most destructive winter storms in recent memory, that’s exactly what one small, dedicated group of local heroes could be found wielding. For some, even a particularly nasty winter weather event serves as little more than a reminder of how nice it is to have lights, heat and running water. With everything canceled and roads impassable, those blessed enough to have alternative sources of power might even find themselves enjoying the respite from the usual hectic routine. For those facing a medical emergency or other immediate need, however, these same circumstances can spell disaster. As Goochland County Fire-Rescue Chief Eddie Ferguson pointed out during a meeting of the board of supervisors last week, first responders received hundreds of calls for help as the storm slammed into Goochland, first with rain, then with a disastrous one-two punch of ice and wind. And while rescuers did not hesitate to brave the slick roads and driving snow, falling trees would soon prove to be a far worse enemy. As rescuers made their way through

local streets, Ferguson explained, they were forced to stop constantly to clear the roadway of ice-laden trees and other debris. Conditions were so treacherous, he said, that one resident who had been experiencing chest pains took nearly an entire day to reach. Ferguson told board members that if it had not been for the residents who showed up, seemingly out of nowhere, to help cut up fallen trees and haul aside debris, first responders would not have been able to answer nearly as many calls. Mind you, these were not people who had signed up to help in an emergency or added their names to any list. They were residents who could have easily stayed inside with their own families instead of forging out into the wind and snow, putting their own safety and comfort aside to help others. While their names may never be known, the Gazette would like to take a moment this week to echo Chief Ferguson’s words and offer our sincere thanks to those brave, dedicated residents who spent the day working so hard on behalf of their fellow citizens. It wasn’t their job to do what they did on Jan. 3 and in the days that followed, but somehow they felt it was their duty. We are truly blessed in our community to call these people our neighbors, and thankful for the example they set.

On such a lazy day, it seemed a perfect time to relax and curl up in my living room chair with a book. My chosen reading? What could be more appropriate than “Snow Crystals” by W.A. Bentley and W.J. Humphreys? The book has a whopping 10 pages of text and 202 pages of images, so it is pretty light reading. I grew up in Texas, so snow was rarely part of my life or my thought process. I wasn’t quite as disbelieving as the King’s children in the 1956 musical “The King and I,” but my main concept of it came from watching movies beyond the occasional ice scare that literally caused everyone to go insane because they didn’t know how to drive in it or have proper attire. I say this because while many people may hear the name Wilson Bentley and automatically think of the “Snowflake Man,” he wasn’t on my radar until a few weeks ago. My favorite podcast, “Stuff You Missed in History Class,” did an episode about the Vermont farmer best known for being the first known person to photograph a snowflake and posit that no two snowflakes are alike. Bulldogs stung in loss to Hornets By Robby Fletcher Sports Editor

E

ntering the third quarter down just three points at home against the Orange County Hornets, the Bulldogs of Goochland were locked into their closest game since their two-point loss against Maggie Walker on Dec. 15. Despite having momentum and the home crowd, Goochland wasn’t able to snap its six-game losing streak as it fell to Orange County in a 51-39 loss on Wednesday night. The Bulldogs had strong contributions from multiple players in the loss, especially in a fantastic first half that saw seven different players score at least a point. Leading the charge was senior Jenika Carter, who has been a constant presence on the stat sheets this season. Wednesday was no different, as she poured in 16 points, seven of which came in the first half. Orange County was led by freshman Laney Fayard, who scored a game-high 18 points and was nine-for-11 from the free throw line. In the first quarter, Goochland guard Shaniyah Morris set the tone for the Bulldogs, leading the charge defensively with three of the team’s five steals in the first quarter. Morris also scored the first point of the game as well as the first assist when she hit senior Erla Thorkelsdottir for a corner jumper. reliable mid-range jump shooting. Lyric Dickerson also made a nice impact in the first half, opening the second quarter with a defensive rebound and a jumper from the free throw line to give Goochland a 16-12 lead. Despite those seven different scorers and some overall promising defense, Orange County was able to go into the half with momentum after a late run gave them a 26-22 lead going into the half. Goochland trailed for most of the third despite hanging around due to Carter’s presence as a dynamic scoring option, but Orange County had a response for nearly every basket the Bulldogs made. Dickerson continued to make an impact in the paint for the Bulldogs, impressing with her work on the glass, her soft jumper and her rim protection. Late in the quarter, the Bulldogs seemed to take the momentum after tying things up with a Emmy Paulin three off a timeout. Paulin wasn’t done yet though, as she recorded a blocked shot and another deep three to tie the game up a second time in the following two possessions. Leading by just three entering the fourth, the Hornets seemed to take control thanks to the strong free throw shooting of Fayard as well as multiple live-ball turnovers from the Bulldogs. As the deficit grew, the Bulldogs continued to press more, leading to multiple mistakes and missed opportunities. Despite a solid performance, it was the Hornets who came out on top, winning their fourth game of the season. Goochland will play Orange County again on Jan. 28 when they travel to the Hornets for a rematch just a week after their first meeting. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.

Goochland wrestling falls short at Louisa meet By Robby Fletcher Sports Editor

I

t was a tough week for the Goochland wrestling team, a group that’s been one of the highest risers in the Jefferson District, as they fell to both Louisa County and Orange County last Wednesday. With Louisa hosting the meet, the Bulldogs (11-6) went on the road and were outplayed by two strong district opponents, with the Lions winning a close 39-30 battle and the Hornets winning 43-36. “Tough night last night,” head coach Jeremy Wampler said. “But definitely a big building moment for us as a team all in all.” Goochland started off against Orange County, where the Hornets earned points in the first three matches thanks to a forfeit and two pins in the first period. Summit Caul opened the scoring for the Bulldogs in the 126-pound event against Olivia Sliger, beating the sophomore with a first-period pin for six

team points. From there, the Bulldogs struggled to generate points until 170-pound freshman Patrick Harlow won by fall in

the first period over sophomore William Pierce to get the Bulldogs back on the board. Though they ended on a high note with senior Alex

Rosenbaum continuing his impressive last season with a second-period fall in the 285-pound matchup, it wasn’t enough to overcome Orange

County’s hot start. Against Orange County, Goochland started with two wins by forfeit, but Louisa threw a collective haymaker as

the team ran off three straight wins in the 120, 126 and 132pound events. Junior John Summit was able to temporarily stop the bleeding with a 11-9 win by decision over senior Gavin Greslick, but the Lions won the next three matches by fall for 18 unanswered points. The Bulldogs deserve credit for their resilience though, as Reese Vincent sparked a fivewin run to close out the dual. Vincent won in a 10-4 decision over Lanton Ryland, which led to two pins by Harlow and senior Jahran Tucker for a quick 12 points. Add in a forfeit, and the Bulldogs certainly closed the dual in a promising and commendable fashion despite the score favoring the Lions. Despite the losses, coach Wampler saw clear progress and lots of positive signs in the performance of his team. “We’re getting there, but clearly just not there yet,” coach Wampler said. “All in good time, though.” Goochland will wrestle again on Jan. 27 for a tri meet with Courtland and Manchster at home.

Cadets roundup: wrestlers set milestone, basketball team falls to 11-3 By Robby Fletcher Sports Editor

In an eventful week for Benedictine athletics, seniors Dyson Dunham and Zane Cox earning 100 career wins on the mat may stand to be at the very top. The two wrestlers joined their teammates at the Benedictine-hosted BCPower5 Duals on Tuesday, Jan. 22 and walked away with a milestone they may never

forget. Dunham earned his landmark win against Skyline High School’s Joey DiVello in his second match of the day. Dunham bested DiVello with a 9-1 major decision and finished the afternoon with a 3-0 record along with a forfeit in the final match. Cox earned his 100th win in his first match against Liberty, beating Royce Hall in a 16-7 major decision. He finished the day with a 3-0 record

as well. For the tournament, Benedictine finished fourth out of five teams, with New Kent and Brooke Point at the top of the standings. Benedictine has two meets this week, the first is their senior night against Louisa on Jan. 27 and the second is a matchup at VMI on Jan. 28. For Cadets basketball, it was an interesting week. On a positive note, they were ranked No. 5 in Richmond

by the Times-Dispatch as they sit at 11-3 on the season. That third loss came this week though, as the team fell to Woodberry Forest 57-51 on Tuesday, Jan. 18. The Cadets led 42-41 at halftime, but the Tigers outscored them 16-9 in a defense-heavy second half. The Cadets will get a chance to redeem themselves on Saturday, Jan. 29 when they Photo by Robby Fletcher take on Christ Church on the Benedictine guard Michael WInstead looks to pass while racing road. The game tips off at 2 down the floor in the Cadets’ 57-51 loss to Woodberry Forest p.m. on Jan. 18.

Snowflakes continued from >6 window. There is a whole interesting history of his life and journey that I recommend people explore more, but briefly: As a child Wilson, who was born in February 1865, would painstakingly capture and examine snow crystals under a microscope. Not content to simply draw what he saw through a microscope passed down from his mother, Wilson convinced his parents to buy him an expensive camera that would take photographs through the microscope. It took him more than a year of trial and error, but on Jan. 15, 1885 – 137 years and a day before I TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30 ESPN

am writing this column – he obtained the first photomicrographs ever taken of an ice crystal. (Snowflakebentley. com) A brief tangent. I wanted to mention that “Snow Crystals,” as well as “The Snowflake Man: a biography of Wilson A. Bentley” by Duncan C. Blanchard and the children’s book “Snowflake Bentley” by Jacqueline Briggs Martin, are all available in the Pamunkey Regional Library system. But did he crow his achievement to the world? Not yet. Over the next 13 years, he captured 400 micrographs of snow crystals before he went public with his work. From 1885 until December 1931, when he died, Wilson Bentley successfully

photographed more than 5,000 snow crystals. A few weeks before he died, Bentley’s book, “Snow Crystals,” was published and included more than 2,400 images he photographed under a microscope – which brings me back to the present. I have been sitting here in this chair, alternately watching the snow swirl outside and looking at black and white images of snowflakes that existed for a few brief moments sometime between 1885 and 1931. I marvel at the intricacies of the different designs. According to the book, snowflakes are colorless, so these designs are not places within the snowflake set apart by distinct colors, but “places that so disperse the light

Since 1955

passing through them as to appear less bright than the adjacent portions of the crystal. This can be effected by at least four different things, ridges, grooves, cavities, and water films, and it is practically certain that all occur in varying degrees and abundance.” But this was never intended as a book report or a scientific article. It is just a simple reflection on a snowy day of the beauty all around us. Looking at the intricacies of these long melted snowflakes, I am in awe of their intricacies and so grateful that Wilson Bentley persevered through countless winter storms to capture their ephemeral beauty.
