Developer of West Creek remembered for service to his community By Roslyn Ryan Editor
For noted real estate developer Clarence Broocks Robertson III, anything worth doing was worth doing right. It was a way of thinking that served him well throughout both his career and his life, and one doesn’t have to look far to see the way that Robertson, who died on Jan. 27, at the age of 83, used that philosophy to help shape Goochland. From the creation of the West Creek commercial complex to the prestigious Kinloch development, Robertson had a reputation ROBERTSON for spearheading top-notch development projects that meshed well with the county’s natural beauty. “C. B. loved Goochland County and, while see Robertson> 2

Robertson continued from >1 he worked hard to make all of his projects special, that was especially true of his work in Goochland,” said Ed Kidd, an attorney with Troutman Sanders who worked with Robertson on numerous projects. After beginning his career at Luck Quarries, Robertson would go on to serve as President of Richmond Asphalt Products before transitioning full time into real estate development. For the next several decades, he would take on projects that included the development of Lower Tuckahoe and Broad Run in Goochland, and also serve as the driving force behind the planning and re-zoning of Stony Point, a mixed-use project in which he was a General Partner. In the mid 1980s he set his sights on the creation of West Creek, a 3,500-acre commercial park now home to such corporate giants as Capital One and Carmax, and the

He was a great man.” While Robertson is remembered as a pioneering force in the real estate world, those close to him will just as easily recall his love for family and passion for giving back to his community. Perhaps his most noteworthy trait, say those who knew him, was his desire to do good. “CB always wanted to do things the right way,” said Goochland County Sheriff James Agnew. “He was just a good guy.” Robertson is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Martha Luck Robertson and children Anne Preston Farmer (Neil), C. Broocks Robertson, IV and Martha Gregory Bowden (Marshall) and grandchildren Will and Molly Farmer and Ned, Harrison and Clay Bowden. He is also survived by his sister, Mary Robertson Morgan of Red Oak, Virginia. He is predeceased by his parents Clarence Broocks Robertson, Jr and Annie Clay Robertson.

Truckload of meat overturns on I-64 A tractor-trailer accident in Goochland in the early morning hours of Feb. 2 resulted in no injuries, but did leave quite a mess for first responders to contend with. At approximately 2:30 a.m. last Friday, the Virginia State Police responded to a singlevehicle crash involving a tractor hauling a refrigerated trailer at
eastbound Interstate 64 at the 150 mile marker in Goochland County. According to Sgt. Keeli L. Hill with the Virginia State Police, the driver, Henry L. Barnett, Jr., 58, of Roanoke, was traveling eastbound Interstate 64, ran off road left, hitting embankment and forcing the trailer to overturn on its side.
The refrigerated trailer contained approximately 56 thousand pounds of meat which was lost in the crash. The truck also lost fuel due to a ruptured tank. Barnett, who was charged with reckless driving, sustained no injuries but cleanup took several hours. — Roslyn Ryan

Organization unveils new building, new name After move to new facility, former Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services is now Goochland Cares By Roslyn Ryan Editor
For the many Goochland residents who came together to make a dream come true, it was a day for celebration. On Friday, Feb. 2, Goochland Cares – the former Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services – opened its doors to the public for a celebratory open house, offering a look at the organization’s new 20,000 square-foot facility in the county’s Courthouse area. For several hours, visitors were free to tour the spacious offices, exam rooms and communal spaces that replace the pieced-together collection of makeshift facilities that were previously spread out across the county. Now, thanks to a two-year fund-raising campaign, clients served by the organization are able to access programs including the Free Clinic, food pantry and Domestic Violence support services all in one place. “We think it’s just fantastic, said Doug Zeigler, a painter who donated three of his works to the new building and was attending the open house with his wife, Amy Jo. Both marveled at the state of the art clinic facilities, as well as the general improvements
brought by the new, modern building. To Goochland Cares Executive Director Sally Graham, the new building offers a pointed message for those served by the organization. When they come into the bright, airy new space, “they will know that this community cares about them, Graham said. “They will know that they are valued. Lisa Luck, board member and capital campaign chair, said she was thrilled with the community’s response. “From the very start, businesses and individuals opened their hearts, Luck said. “Some were able to contribute financially and helped us reach our fundraising goal in two years. Others provided inkind donations like furniture or moving services. We were overwhelmed by the generosity of this community and are proud to be a part of it. The benefits of the new facility aren’t limited just to clients: according to Goochland Cares staffers Heather Salmon and Sarah Okolita, the new setup is a win for the organization’s employees and volunteers as well. “It’s amazing how much you can increase staff communication just by being in
the same space, said Okolita. For Salmon, the privacy and safety enhancements clients will now enjoy are a huge benefit. “Just the access they have now, to be able to come and see us and then to use the other services they need in the building, is really wonderful, she said. For Goochland Cares clients, the new changes are just one more example of the lifechanging work done by the organization’s staff and volunteers. Barbara Friedman said Friday that she has relied on the free clinic program for support through several health struggles. “Thank God for Sally, Friedman said. “I don’t know what I would have done without her. This place fills such an incredible need in the community. They have stood by me through everything. Friday afternoon also saw Lisa Coles cheerfully manning the cash register in the Clothes Closet, which now enjoys a spacious, light-filled room with wide aisles for shoppers to browse. As she handed out new Goochland Cares hats and chatted with visitors and clients alike, Coles enjoyed a particularly unique perspective: in

addition to now working for the organization, she is also a client. Thanks to Goochland Cares, Coles said, she was able to get her GED. “This is a blessing, Coles said happily, noting that the
new space is so much more comfortable for clients. “It’s like a real store now. To Graham, the new building and all it will be able to do for Goochland residents is a testament to the caring nature
of those who call Goochland home. “This was all about Goochland residents saying ‘We need to do this for our community,’ Graham said. “And that’s just amazing.

CLARENCE B. ROBERTSON III Clarence Broocks Robertson III, 83, died on Jan. 27, 2018 with his family by his side. He is survived by his wife of over 60 years, Martha Luck Robertson and children Anne Preston Farmer (Neil), C. C.B. was born on Oct. 6, 1934 at Pineland Farm in Charlotte County, Virginia. Following graduation from Virginia Tech in 1957 where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets and the German Club, he married Martha Gregory Luck. C.B. was passionate about his family, work and community and the impact he had on all was profound. He absolutely adored his wife, and the bond they shared has been an inspiration to all who knew them. His strong work ethic was admirable and his commitment of giving back to the community through vari-
ous efforts was endless. His reputation was paramount. He always honoured his word and strove to create situations where both parties were treated fairly. Following his service with the U.S. Army at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, C.B.’s professional career began at Luck Quarries followed by being President of Richmond Asphalt Products. He then moved into full time ROBERTSON real estate development. Since the 1960s, C.B.’s vision has had a tremendous impact on the metropolitan Richmond real estate community. His initial projects included the development of Lower Tuckahoe and Broad Run in Goochland County. He built The Crossings Golf Course, as part of Ethelwood Center which was later expanded to become Virginia Center. He was also the force behind the planning and re-zoning of Stony Point, a mixed-use project in which he was a General Partner. In the mid 1980’s he began the assemblage, planning and re-zoning of West Creek, a 3,500 acre commercial park in Goochland County for the
NCNB Real Estate Fund and was involved with the development’s initial sales including Capital One. While concluding his involvement in West Creek, he began more serious planning of what is now Kinloch. His vision for this property resulted in not only a high quality residential development in which he remained active until his death, but also in the formation and construction of Kinloch Golf Club of which he was a founder. On racism: 100 years on, still grappling with same issues By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Just over 100 years ago today, D.W Griffith’s film, “The Birth of Nation,” was released to the public, sparking widespread protests over its portrayal of black Americans and helping, according to many historians, to embolden and swell the ranks of the Ku Klux Klan. On this same day in 1968, just over 50 years from the release of Griffith’s movie, three young black men were killed after police fired into a crowd of student protestors in Orangeburg, South Carolina, an event that would come to be known
as the Orangeburg Massacre. Today, 50 years after that tragic day, it is not entirely unrealistic to say that we as a nation have made real progress toward equality for all Americans. But even as we celebrate our gains, it also is worth taking stock of how much work still lies ahead. On this Feb. 8, we can say that we have elected the first AfricanAmerican president, vehemently condemned publicly those who have used racist language, and taken steps to advance the cause of equal protection and opportunities for all. Yet we also must contend

with the reality of demonstrations like the one that took place in Charlottesville last August — replete with neo-Nazi flags and white supremacist chants — or the hate-filled content that seemed to spread like wildfire during the final months of Barack Obama’s presidency. Accusing the President of the United States – or anyone, for that matter — of harboring a racist ideology is a serious charge, and one I certainly don’t feel entitled to bring. But it was unsettling, to say the least, when it seemed during the recent campaign as though Donald Trump made few attempts to avoid
stoking already festering prejudices among some segments of his base. We can do better. We must do better. On this Feb. 8, as communities around the nation take part in celebrations in honor of Black History Month, let us make a commitment to continuing the dialogue about equality and tolerance, two values that should be among the most deeply cherished in any free society. We are moving forward, to be sure, but we still have a ways to go. Here’s to hoping that 50 years from today, on a Feb. 8 far in the future, we will truly be one nation, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.

Lessons learned outside of school By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I’m a product of 1950s style parenting, and long before Dr. Spock’s advice filled books, my parents had their own set of unique techniques when it came to child-rearing. As I look back, some of the methods seem harsh, or even silly, but most have stood the test of time and have provided a blueprint for the way I raise and have raised my children. Being one of the aforementioned 1950 era babies, I was, like most of the kids on my block, the child of a man who had served his country several years earlier during World War II. Many of my fellow Baby Boomers will attest to the influence that experience had on our fathers, and how, sometimes, that faded glimpse of regiment leaked into our lives. Our mornings began the same each day. “Hit the deck!” my father would yell from a strategic point in our hall that seemed to amplify his first order of the day. We didn’t have to point our sleepy eyes to the old kitchen clock that sat on the wall in our bedroom, because we knew it had to be 7 a.m. Rarely was the first announcement ignored, but a second call always sounded closer and more impending and never dismissed. Our morning routine must have reminded him of his days in the United States Army, identical to the monotony and sameness of a bugle blast announcing reveille. Now, I could easily pull on the jeans that served as a uniform in my early school years, but could see Ridolphi > page 7
Thursday
continued from >6 never get the always too long bottoms even. I’d situate myself on the bed and Daddy would meticulously roll up the cuffs, ending each alteration with a solid snap that permanently sealed his work for the day. While others had cuffs that looked more rolled than snapped, mine were precision folds with uniform width. Watching him make those perfect cuffs was something I watched with great care, and I was always amazed at his unique ability. It’s the same feeling I got when I watched him tie what he called a Windsor knot with his necktie each morning. When it came to education, my father believed it came in all forms and from all directions. Once or twice a year, my sister or I would be selected to accompany him for the day as he traveled the state selling
tires for a local tire manufacturer for large machinery and commercial fleets. Somewhere along the numerous stops, he made sure we visited some historic site in the area. It might be a state park, an historic home or a battlefield, but always an adventure and, every once in a while, we actually learned something. Sometimes, we visited farmers who bought tractor tires, and other times we called on contractors who used large earth-moving machines. Like every fourth-grader in Virginia, I was required to make a Virginia History project. After choosing tourism as the theme for my project, I began collecting pamphlets for my scrapbook presentation. When my father told me I could accompany him to Williamsburg, the assignment seemed like a cinch. We arrived at the newly constructed Visitors Center, and my father met with a man regarding their fleet of
vehicles. While he talked in a closed office, I gazed at the wall of pamphlets, a selection I could have never imagined. I didn’t know where to start. After selecting four or five brochures, a lady came out from behind the desk and told me not to take any more. At 9 years old, I wasn’t prepared to explain or argue. To that lady’s misfortune, my father saw the whole incident as he exited the office. He calmly shook hands with the account executive and walked slowly toward the area where I stood still feeling that pit of my stomach that accompanies immense embarrassment. He walked past me and toward the desk and spoke quietly to the lady, but I saw the look on his face well enough to know I was glad someone else was on the receiving end. He walked over to where I was standing and told me to take all the brochures I needed or thought I would need to
complete the project. Now, I still don’t know what was said in that brief conversation, but I’ve learned since that some of life’s most precious lessons are subtle, leaving only a clue or hint to its real meaning. I’m also not sure what was learned at Crestview Elementary School that day, but I’m convinced it couldn’t have been as meaningful or poignant as the directive my father provided in Williamsburg. I’m not sure kids take workdays with their dads and moms these days, but it’s a practice that might deserve resurrection. I can affirm their educational value, not to mention the excitement and anticipation of an adventure on a day when all of your friends are sitting in class. I hope my kids aren’t reading this.

Goochland’s wrestling team competed in the Virginia High School League Region 2A tournament on Feb. 3 at Poquoson High School. Overall, Goochland posted a solid performance for a program as young as it is, finish-
ing ninth out of 11 teams in the region with 72 points. The Bulldogs were five points short of eighth-place Amelia. Goochland’s Cody Nash led the way for the Bulldogs with a fourth-place finish in the 113-pound weight class. Nash began the tournament with a pin of Amelia’s
Taylor Cooper in 2:59. Elio Garcia-Cruz of Nottoway then bested Nash in the semifinals by a technical fall. Nash rebounded with a 19-6 major decision over Nandua’s Dylan Ross to advance to the third-place match. Ronaldo Lopez-Mendez of
Arcadia pinned Nash in 4:32 in that match, handing Nash the fourth-place finish. James River District 120-pound champion Max Moreno finished fifth in his weight class at the region tournament. Moreno was pinned in 3:02 in his quarterfinal match against Nandua’s Matt Taylor
before receiving a bye and winning by forfeit in consecutive consolation rounds. In the consolation semifinal, Travis Wyatt of Nottoway pinned Moreno in 3:41. Then, Moreno pinned Marvin Gomez of Arcadia in 2:15 to secure the fifth-place finish. Goochland’s Corey
Vincent also finished fifth for the Bulldogs in the 132pound class. Vincent started off strong with a pin of Nandua’s Devon Nieves in 3:49. Nottoway’s Gabriel GarciaCruz pinned Vincent in just 41 seconds in the semifinal see Bulldogs> 9

Roundup: Goochland ready for key district showdown By Billy Fellin Sports Editor
Goochland’s girls basketball team continued its dominance over the James River District in two games at home, but took a rare loss on the road. The Bulldogs took on Bluestone on Jan. 30 and took down the Barons 52-26. Goochland was led by Lanaysia Gonzalez, who scored 15 points and had four rebounds. Justice Tibbs added eight points, seven steals and five assists. Goochland’s offense was too much for the Bluestone defense to contain as Gonzalez and her teammates were able to frequently find the holes in the Barons scheme and take it to the hoop for an easy layup. On defense, the Bulldogs were equally aggressive, as they set up a press on Bluestone and forced errant passes and rushed decisions, which often led to balls heading out of bounds and reverted back to Goochland’s possession. When Bluestone was able to get into their offensive
Bulldogs continued from >8 match. Then, Vincent fell by pin in 3:31 in the consolation semifinal to Arcadia’s Osberto Perez. Vincent won in sudden victory in a rematch with Nieves to take fifth. Goochland’s Ayden Doczi at 195 and Jacob Massey at 220 both took home fifthplace finishes as well. Doczi fell in the quarterfi-
end of the floor, their shots were more often than not off the mark and the Bulldogs defense was quick to rebound and rush it to the other end of the floor. The Bulldogs suffered a setback against Region 2A East opponent Maggie Walker on Jan. 31. In a game that was moved from earlier this season due to the winter weather, the Bulldogs fell to the Green Dragons 49-32. Tibbs scored nine points for the Bulldogs in the loss. It is just the fourth loss that Goochland has suffered this season and broke a five-game win streak. On Feb. 2, Goochland rolled past Randolph-Henry in a 52-18 final. The Bulldogs honored its two seniors, Dorothy Clore and Sierra McLean, prior to the blowout win over the Statesmen. Gonzalez scored 16 points for Goochland and added six rebounds. Blake Thomas scored 10 points and had four assists and three steals. Tibbs added six assists and four steals. nals to Jerry Eddy of Nottoway by pin in 3:31. After two consecutive byes in the consolation round, D’Andre Alexander of Bluestone defeated Doczi by a 3-1 decision. In the fifth-place match, Doczi got the best of Amelia’s John McDonald by pin in 31 seconds. For Massey, he fell in the quarterfinal by pin in 5:03 to Julian Dedicatoria of Amelia. Massey had a bye in the consolation round before
The Bulldogs are 13-1 in the James River District and hold a one-game lead over Prince Edward for the division lead. Goochland and Prince Edward were scheduled to play on Feb. 5, but that game was postponed to Feb. 8 due to Prince Edward being out of school on Feb. 5.
BOYS B-BALL Goochland’s boys basketball team hit a speed bump on Jan. 30 in a 61-49 loss to Bluestone on the road. But, the Bulldogs bounced back on Jan. 31 against Maggie Walker in a 59-38 win. Quincy Snead scored 17 points and had seven rebounds and six steals. Kameron Holman added 13 points, while Brooks had 12 points and seven rebounds. The game was also the Ballin’ for a Cure game, which benefitted local firefighters. Then, on Feb. 2, the Bulldogs got revenge on an earlier loss this season, taking down Randolph-Henry 46-36. Deion Harwood scored 13 points and had 11 rebounds against the Statesmen, while pinning Gabriel Williams on Maggie Walker in 1:32. In the consolation semifinals, Neil Clayton of Bluestone took down Massey by pin in 1:45. Massey got the best of Darius Wilson of Nottoway in 4:47 to secure fifth. At 106 pounds, Maddie Muniz finished sixth for the Bulldogs. She fell to Angel Vasquez in 1:49 in the quarterfinals before receiving consecutive byes.

JaMel Allen added 10 points. On Feb. 3, Goochland grabbed a key district win with a 71-54 triumph over Bluestone, avenging the loss earlier in the week. Harwood scored 25 points and had 10 rebounds in the
win, while Keiston Carter had 16 points, Snead scored 14 and Holman added 10. Goochland is currently 12-2 in the district, one game ahead of Randolph-Henry. The Bulldogs faced Amelia on Feb. 7 and traveled to
Muniz then lost to Kyle Sosnowski in the consolation semifinals by pin in 39 seconds. In the fifth-place match, Muniz fell again, this time in 2:05, to Bluestone’s Xavier Sturdifen. Gus Payne and Andrew Garcia both brought home sixth-place finishes as well. Payne, the 170 pounder for the Bulldogs, fell to King William’s Tanner Gilbertson in the quarterfinals by pin in 1:11.
In the third consolation round, Payne got on the winning track by pinning Michael Neuffer of Amelia in 48 seconds. The consolation semifinal didn’t go well for Payne, as he was pinned by Nottoway’s Konner Hardison in 31 seconds. Payne then faced Gilbertson again in the fifthplace match and fell again to the Cavaliers’ 170-pound entry by pin in 2:55. A Gilbertson from King
Prince Edward on Feb. 8.
FOOTBALL Goochland senior Ricky Mayfield announced on Twitter that he has committed to play at Randolph-Macon College. William also got the best of Garcia in the quarterfinals, as Travis pinned Garcia in 21 seconds. In the third round of consolation matches, Garcia pinned Johnathon Miller of Arcadia in 28 seconds. Cole Cummins on Maggie Walker pinned Garcia in the consolation semifinal in 1:16. Layton Payne of Randolph-Henry then got the best of Garcia in the fifthplace match by pin in 3:55.
