deeds will be formally recognized when he is named the 2015 Citizen of the Year by the Virginia chapter of the National Association of Social Workers, which will be meeting in Williamsburg. Many Goochlanders may know Bowles as the enthusiastic leader of his Rotary club’s “wood-chucking” enterprise. His efforts, coupled with those of other club members, helped warm the homes of countless needy families over the years.

Bowles has been actively involved in constructing homes for the county’s less fortunate. Since signing on with Habitat for Humanity in 1998, he has helped build 20 homes in Goochland. He also helped construct the fellowship hall at his church, Byrd Presbyterian. “I served

County residents no longer have to wait for an annual electronics recycling day to properly dispose of unwanted and outdated electronic items. Two drop-off locations, the Western and Central Convenience Centers, are available for used electronics. In addition to minimizing material deposited into landfills, electronic recycling reduces the amount of dangerous heavy metals entering into the waste stream. Equipment collected in this program will be disassembled and recycled under U.S. Environmental Protection Agency standards. Computer hard drives will be processed to Department of Defense/ National Security Administration standards. Documentation of data destrucsee Recycling > 3

Bowles volunteers at Goochland Free Clinic & Family Services (GFCFS), where he has served on the organization’s board of directors. He is credited with helping to build 80 wheelchair ramps for local citizens with physical limitations. In addition, he helped create two emergency-shelter apartments on the grounds of GFCFS in Goochland Courthouse. The apartments provide shelter to those in need who would otherwise be homeless.

Bowles grew up in a home adjacent to the Goochland County Courthouse and graduated from Goochland High School. From there, he went to Virginia Tech — it was VPI back then — where he majored in education. Upon graduation in 1958, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy. His military career would span 27 years. He graduated from Officer Candidate School and was assigned to anti-submarine warfare (ASW) duty. He was initially stationed in Hawaii. He said he flew from there to “picturesque” islands throughout the Pacific, including Guam, Wake, Japan and the Philippines. “The Soviets were doing their missile tests in the South Pacific at the time,” he said. Bowles described his job as being much like that of a navi-

gator. “I would calculate all of the information coming in and determine when to drop sonar buoys,” he said. Later in his career, Bowles transferred from ASW to naval intelligence. He spent time in Bahrain in the Persian Gulf. “We covered everything from the Suez Canal down to Kenya and over to the Burma border,” he said. Bowles retired from the Navy as a captain in 1985. He wasn’t ready to retire from the workforce, though. He took a job with a Fredericksburg engineering firm that would last 10 years. Bowles ultimately returned home to Goochland, building a home on Rock Castle Road where he and his wife Linda now live. They have four children and two granddaughters. Letters to the Editor

Let the sunshine in By Roslyn Ryan Editor

In honor of National Sunshine Week — an annual celebration of open government and the 1966 Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) — I have just one thing I want to make clear: No, you can’t have my emails. Sure, I could give them to you, offering up a neatly-bound packet of every single electronic missive I’ve received or sent while working for community newspapers over the past 10 years (and I might even warn you that a few of the ones I have received are, shall we say, “colorful”). But let’s be clear about this: I am not compelled by law to hand them over. I bring this up, not because I am terribly worried that anyone will come storming into my office and demand my emails, but because there are plenty of people whose e-mail — and regular mail, and just about all other documents relating to their work — you do have the ability, in fact, the right, to ask for. If someone works in the public sector, their correspondence is subject to FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) requests. And this includes everyone from the secretary of any local county office to — dare I say? — Hillary Clinton herself (yes, I totally

went there.) Thanks to the Freedom of Information Act, you have the right to walk into any government office, summon whomever in the office is in charge of handling FOIA requests, and ask for whatever public records you want.* Want to know what the county spent in salaries last year? Just ask. Want to know how many taxpayer dollars were spent by a public official on a recent workrelated trip? It’s yours. Looking for information on the cost of a recent public works project? You are entitled to that as well. The reasons you might need to see these documents and records are many, but they are all valid, no matter who you are or what you choose to do with the information. As we celebrate National Sunshine Week this week, let us remember that transparency might not always be convenient for our leaders, but it is essential to the survival of a free and thriving democracy. And let us remember that it is our right —and our civic duty — to hold our leaders accountable. * Some documents, including personnel files and records pertaining to an ongoing criminal investigation, are exempt from FOIA requests.

Deer still a major issue on Rockville Road Dear Editor, It has been said that Rockville Road is “the most dangerous road in Goochland County.” Just count the many memorials on the sides of the road. I live near the bad curve and the deer cross south of my driveway. I have called the state repeatedly for a deer crossing sign. They call back with many reasons for not putting it up and a dead deer pickup number, 1-800-367-7623. We have been living here 10 years and they have not picked up one yet. So I would like to share one of favorite hit deer stories, to warn other people who use this road of the problem. While I figure out how

to make my own deer crossing sign, which the state says may or may not be legal to put up. The first month that we lived out here, someone hit a deer near the end of our driveway with a BMW. After the police left and the car was hauled away, I went out to look at the area. I found a shiny, slightly dented BMW grill. I thought it would look good in my garage. I hung it up with a sign that reads “Beama vs. Bambi.” Later on, when someone hit one near the end of our driveway, it laid there long enough to start smelling bad. I went out to see if I could move it to another place where we could not smell it. I found some black buzzards and a large grey bird having lunch. I had not seen a large

grey bird like this before. So I called the game commission and asked for their bird person. This must have created some confusion, because it took awhile. When someone answered, they said it was a baby eagle that had not gotten his colors yet and the nest must be nearby. Last spring someone hit one about 100 feet south of our driveway. It laid there until there was nothing left, hide and bones. After that, it started moving up my driveway a little each night, dropping bones as it moved. When it got to my front yard I took a picture and moved it deep into the woods. No more problems with that one. Thank you, W.T. Hall Goochland

High school actors will present ‘Into the Woods’ Contributed report The Goochland High School Drama Department will present “Into the Woods” Friday through Sunday, March 27-29, in the Goochland High School auditorium. The popular musical, with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine, is noted for its clever blending of well-known fairy tales, memorable songs and themes that resonant with both young and old. “Into the Woods,” which was adapted into a hit movie last year, is directed by Neil Burch, who is in his fourth year as head of the Drama Department at Goochland High School. Jay Sykes, who leads the Band program at GHS, is providing the musical direction. Vocal direction is by Kim Watts, a music teacher at Goochland Elementary School, and choreography is by Jamie Beatty, who teaches fifth grade at Byrd Elementary School. The musical is centered on a baker and his wife and their longing for a child. Upon learning from an old witch that their childlessness is the result of a curse, they enter into a deal with the witch: She will lift the curse if they can obtain the objects she requires. The couple ventures into the woods to search for the objects, crossing paths with char-

acters from “Little Red Riding Hood,” “Cinderella,” “Rapunzel” and “Jack and the Beanstalk.” By the end of the show, many of the characters have experienced the consequences of greed, carelessness and excess, and the audience is left pondering the adage “be careful what you wish for.” “ ‘Into the Woods’ is a challenging production,” said Burch. “I wanted my students to learn and grow from the experience.” And by helping the students tackle the complex music and intricate lyrics, he gave them another objective: “My goal was to challenge their artistic abilities to create a fresh new fairy tale for audiences to analyze and explore.” Evening performances of “Into the Woods” are scheduled for 7 p.m. March 27 and 28, with a matinee at 2:30 p.m. on March 29. Tickets are $8 for adults and $5 for students and can be purchased at the door. Tickets also can be reserved at http://blogs.glnd.k12.va.us/nburch/ into-the-woods. Dear Pet Peeve, I suppose it could be frustrating to come home and find your pooch sprawled out on the couch like he owns the place! I also have no doubt pets wish to be comfortable too. Let’s defy that old saying, “You can’t teach an old dog new tricks,” and go with a little reverse psychology. Exhibit A: One luxurious, plush, dog bed. And if this doesn’t lure man’s best friend ... Exhibit B: Treats! Put bones, snacks, dog toys on the new bed. Do this regularly to create a habit and keep his new throne enticing. More than one problematic area deserves dog beds in multiple designations. With any luck, you may have your faithful, slothful sidekick tricked into thinking he’s still the king of your castle! Add personal touches to create ‘cube appeal’

S

ince its inception around 40 years ago, the cubicle has been a mainstay of office decor. Love it or loathe it, many companies still employ the segregated design of cubicles to outfit their buildings and provide a measure of personal space for employees. Before the advent of cubicles, most office workers were lined up rather rigidly in desks in one open space. Those who held higher positions in the organization may have had a private office. Robert Probst, a research director at the home-furnishings company Herman Miller in Zeeland, Mich., came up with the concept of the “Action Office” in the late 1960s. His system was designed to increase productivity of workers. It consisted of a variety of work surfaces and shelves that could display paperwork and other work items. This was before the desktop computer became an essential element of offices across the globe. Partitions were part of the design, offering some semblance of privacy and a place to post work in progress. Desks varied in height so that workers could stand up and stretch while working. In theory, the Action Office had merit, but soon plain old economics changed cubicles into what they would become -inexpensive means of housing employees in a relatively small amount of space. To stimulate business spending in the 1960s, the United States Treasury established new rules for depreciating assets. They stated that offices with permanent structures depreci-

METRO

ated after 39.5 years. Office furniture would depreciate — and need to be replaced —in just seven years. Therefore, a company could recover costs faster if it purchased a cubicle-type system, and this factor quickly became a new selling point for

Probst’s Action Office systems. Probst’s original design was meant to be flexible and moveable. But cubicles, once erected, rarely moved. And soon companies packed them into whatever space they had. Although there have been uprisings to thwart the cubicle lifestyle within the office environment — most unsuccessful — one of the more recent threats to cubicle life is the growing popularity of working from home or from other areas, such as coffee shops or areas with WiFi service. Some office cubicles remain vacant most of the week thanks to mobile technology and flexible bosses who allow work to get done anywhere as long as productivity is not sacrificed. For those who still spend considerable time inside of a cubicle, here are some suggestions for making it your own. Add small decor touches, like a landscape photo or a portrait of your family. Put up diplomas or certificates of merit, especially if customers or clients will be visiting you at your cubicle. Plants can boost your mood and add a bit of life and color to the office. They also help liven up stale office air. Many plants thrive under fluorescent lights, a staple of office living. Place a candy dish out so that coworkers will stop by and visit for a few minutes. Hang up a brainteaser or word of the day calendar to help keep your mind sharp. –Metro Creative

BUSINESS AND PROFESSIONAL GUIDE

Maintain your productivity when working from home dollars per year. Businesses also benefit from allowing employees to work remotely. Small businesses may need less office space if many of their employees work from home, saving them substantial amounts of money in rent. In addition, businesses who allow workers to telecommute may not need to spend as much on computers and other tools for their employees, as many telecommuters use their own personal computers when working from home. While telecommuting can benefit employee and employer, the success of such an arrangement depends largely on the employees who will be working from home. Men and women who work from home often find they have more freedom at home than they did when working in an office, and how they handle that freedom will go a long way toward determining how successful they are at telecommuting. The following are a handful of strategies telecommuters can employ to ensure their work-from-home experiment is a productive success. – Metro Creative

elecommuting has grown more and more common over the last decade. Thanks in large part to advancements in technology that make it easier than ever before to connect remotely with coworkers, telecommuting is now something more and more companies are embracing. According to Global Workplace Analytics, a consulting and research firm that focuses on emerging workplace strategies, the total telework growth from 2011 to 2012, the most recent year for which statistics are available, was 3.8 percent. But those figures donÕt tell the entire story, as the rise of telecommuters increased considerably since 2006, when the number of teleworkers grew by 26 percent over the year prior. Telecommuting can pay dividends for workers and businesses alike. Workers benefit from telecommuting in a variety of ways. Working parents find telecommuting drastically cuts back on or even eliminates childcare costs, saving them thousands of

Bulldogs poised for veteran effort in 2015 Goochland baseball lost only two seniors to graduation By Jim Ridolphi

Special Correspondent If experience truly does matter, this year’s Goochland Bulldogs baseball team should be well-equipped for a successful season. Losing only two seniors from last year’s team, the savvy squad is deep at all positions, including on the mound. “We should have a lot of pitchers,” head coach Wes Farkas said. “The hardest part for us as a coaching staff is making sure all of our guys get enough innings during live game situations.” Coleman Duty and Tanner Bradshaw return as the team’s top two pitchers in a rotation

that could feature several hurlers. Joe Cutchins, Matt Ashley, Nick Norman, Hunter Bailey, Scott Carter, Andrew Harcum and Evan Falconer will get their turns on the bump for the Bulldogs. “We are returning all of our pitching from last year, and gaining a few from last year’s JV team,” Farkas said. Last year’s squad earned each victory and also lost some close games, an experience that Farkas said he thinks will benefit this year’s team. “I think one of our big strengths will be experience. We have grown a lot from last season,” Farkas said. “We won and lost a lot of tough games, so I feel that our toughness in close games will help us this season.” Last year’s defense was never in question, and Farkas is returning most of his starters and has added depth at all positions. “I feel that we have at least

two guys deep in every position, and there is a battle at each spot,” he said. “We should be a solid defensive team this year. Our guys are relaxed and playing well. This should translate well on the field as well.” Farkas also said he hopes to invigorate offensive production that was lackluster at times last season. “One of our weaknesses last season was lack of offensive production. I felt that we underachieved at the plate, and we hope to correct this issue this season,” he said. The veteran squad will be tested early with two non-conference games, and then gauge themselves against last year’s district champions. “If we are able to play next week, we open up with two nonconference games and Bluestone [which won the conference last season]. We should have some very good competition right out of the gate, and hopefully that see Baseball > 14

Former Bulldogs’ standout gives back to community Submitted photo

Former Goochland High School football player and current Eastern Michigan University linebacker Nathan Adams recently visited a Michigan-based children’s hospital. Martin’s teammates include Lavonte Robinson (45), Kevin Davis (81), Derrick Dunlap (94) and Deshai Powell (91). Martin wrapped up his junior season with the Eagles last fall, appearing in all 12 games and notching 14 tackles and one touchdown. During his senior year with the Bulldogs in 2012, Martin was named All-James River District defensive player of the year, All Region B Defensive Player of the Year and Group A State Player of the Year. He recorded 139 tackles (18 for loss) in 15 games, helping the Bulldogs to their second state championship of the 2000s with a 41-14 victory over Essex in the title game.

continued from >13 will carry us into April moving in the right direction” he said. The team will have a few weeks to warm up before the heat of the schedule arrives. “We wont play Randolph Henry until after spring break, and they will probably prove to be one of our toughest matchups,” Farkas said. The coach said he is optimistic about his team’s chances in the 2015 season, and he hopes that the team’s veteran makeup will make the difference on a talent-laden squad. “I think that this team is poised to have a great season.

We have a lot of returners, and a lot of talent across the board,” Farkas said. “There will be guys battling all season for playing time,” he added. “With this type of competition in practice, we are working very hard when we have opportunities to practice.” He said he also hopes the added experience will provide key leadership in games when the going gets tough. “We need to stay relaxed and keep our composure. We weren’t always able to do that last year, and I don’t see it being an issue this year,” he said. “If we execute and play the way we are capable of we should

fair very well this season,” the coach said. Some key players to keep an eye on this year’s Bulldog roster include: • Joe Cutchins, #6 — middle infield • Coleman Duty, #20 — pitcher and first base • Tanner Bradshaw, #4 — pitcher and first base • Cory Alexander, #2 — centerfield • Scott Carter, #14 — outfielder Farkas said he doesn’t like highlighting players and picking stars is not his style. “I really think it could be a different guy every game giving us a spark.”

Fest. The event, which continues to grow, will be held on the college’s Goochland campus at 1851 Dickinson Road. Last year, more than 600 people attended a day dedicated to gardening education, horticultural demonstrations, vendors and plant sales. This year, Spring Garden Fest offers online registration for its classes and workshops. By registering online, those attending the event will be able to find out immediately if the classes they want to attend are

available and get confirmation of enrollment. The speed of the online registration process increases the chances of getting into these events, which are limited by space and the number of people they can accommodate. To see the complete listing of all classes and workshops, along with more detailed descriptions of each, visit www.gpmga.org/springgardenfest.htm. Because space is limit-

ed in all of the classes and workshops, early registration is strongly recommended to ensure a seat. A $10 fee covers all classes and workshops, but you must register to attend them. (Some workshops have an additional fee for materials.) This year it’s easier than ever to register early, using one of three methods: Go to www.gpmga.org/ springgardenfest.htm and pay the fee using either a major credit or debit card. From the website, print

the registration form and follow the instructions for payment and mailing. Call the Goochland Extension Office at (804) 5565841 and request a registration form via email. The deadline for early registration is April 17. If you miss the deadline, it is possible to register and pay for classes and workshops at the door, if space is still available. Registration on the day of the event will be $12, plus any fees for workshop materials.
