Eris Crouch wiped down a table on Monday at Goochland Restaurant, where owner Mildred Taylor reported that business had noticeably slowed since the worldwide coronavirus pandemic hit. Just a few hours later, Governor Ralph Northam mandated that all Virginia restaurants close their dining rooms for the next 30 days.
With Governor Ralph Northam’s announcement on Monday that all Virginia public schools will be closed for the remainder of the 20192020 school year, Goochland School Superintendant Dr. Jeremy Raley quickly sought to reassure anxious students and parents. “Although I know that our students and our team join me in our shock and sadness at this announcement, we know that this measure is being taken to ensure that we keep ourselves and our loved ones healthy,” Raley said Monday in a letter posted on the school division’s website. “This measure will also hopefully ensure that we can open our doors again in August with extra enthusiasm for another amazing year.” Northam’s order applies to all K-12 schools in the state, both public and private, and comes as the corosee Schools> 2

navirus continues to spread in Virginia. Richmond-area school districts had already announced that schools would be closed until at least April 13. Raley said Monday that he understood that the news would take an emotional toll on families, many of whom were already strained by financial and other concerns due to the outbreak. “Like all divisions in Virginia, we did not leave our schools a week ago Friday imagining that it would be our last day together in our
buildings,” Raley said. “Our work to ensure some continuity in learning and operations was being conducted in anticipation of returning to schools before June. Fortunately, we have a team in Goochland that will put its tremendous talents to work in the days and weeks ahead to develop plans that will allow us to adapt to these historic events with the same energy that distinguishes us on any day as the best.” Raley pledged that the division “will work to provide you with as much clarity and direction as we can in the coming days. Be assured that I will continue to keep you informed on a regular basis.”
Virginia joins Kansas in announcing that schools will be closed for the rest of the year. At press time, all but four states — Idaho, Nebraska, Iowa and Maine — had mandated school closures. Virginia also joined other states in asking the U.S. Department of Education to waive mandatory testing requirements, normally done in the spring. U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos said Friday that the agency would accept applications for waivers, something Virginia is preparing. The state should know if Standards of Learning tests are canceled for the year by mid-April.

Restaurants among hardest hit by new rules Change Monday means all dining rooms in state are now closed By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Chef Lee owner Huilong Lin doesn’t like to see food go to waste. So on March 19, when he was forced by the COVID-19 outbreak to shut down the courthouse-area restaurant he’s owned for 17 years, he did the only thing that made sense to him. He arranged a selection of produce and other items he would no longer be able to sell in a cart in front of the store, and attached a note urging anyone who needed food to take some. He then locked his front door and, like dozens of other stunned restaurant owners around the county, went home to try and figure out what to do next. It has become a sadly familiar story over the past few weeks: of all the businesses to be negatively impacted by the mass shutdowns seen across the country, small independent restaurants are among the hardest hit. With small margins and bottom lines dependant on getting as many people through the doors as possible, many restaurant owners could hardly be blamed for seeing a mandatory shutdown of even a few weeks as an insurmountable obstacle. Now, with Monday’s news that Virginia restaurants will not be allowed to offer dine-in service for at least another 30 days, the situation may be even more bleak. Just before the new rule was announced, Mildred Taylor was
seated in a corner booth at the Goochland Restaurant, which she has owned since 1968. Business had slowed since the Governor announced last week that restaurants could seat only 10 patrons at a time, a move that left many owners panicked and led some to shut down operations entirely. Taylor was optimistic — after all, they have been seeing a bump in their takeout calls. What the future holds, however, is anyone’s guess. For Jennifer Etosh, an employee of the Pickle Barrel restaurant in Goochland, the 10 patron rule has meant a scramble to convert the 300seat restaurant into a take-out operation. It hasn’t been easy, she said, but added that if she can’t fix the problem she can at least control how she responds to it. “Of course it’s a little depressing, Etosh said, “but I just try to stay as positive as possible. Customers, it seems, are also helping to keep spirits up. Social media has been flooded with posts urging people to support local eateries and to remember to tip as generously as they are able. Last week, an anonymous customer at Sunset Grill in Manakin Sabot left several hundred dollars in an envelope with a note calling the gift a “coronavirus tip. “We miss you guys, the note said, “and look forward to when we can all be together again. As of press time on Tuesday, the following local restaurants remain open. „Tanglewood Ordinary - Offering curbside pickup http://ordinary.com/ „Eccoti - Offering curbside pickup - https://www.eccotirestaurant.com/ „Bella Sicilia - Offering curbside pickup - http://bellasi-

Business organizations rush to aid local operators Worley: Full extent of virus’s impact on local businesses hard to calculate now
By Roslyn Ryan Editor
While no one knows for sure how significant an economic toll the ongoing COVID-19 outbreak is going to take in the long run,
Hey parents, do you need a break? Connecting Pointe Church of the Nazarene, located at 519 Broad Street Road, Manakin-Sabot, is hosting a Parents’ Night Out on Friday, March 13, and Friday, April 3, from 5-9 p.m. Drop the kids off with us while you enjoy an evening out. There will be music, dinner, games, crafts, Bible lessons and movie time. The cost is $5/child for all children up to 7th grade. For more information, or if you would like to register for one or both nights, email us at families@connectingpointe.org. We look forward to seeing you.
Goochland County Economic Development Director Sara Worley knows the fallout in Goochland, as in many small communities, could potentially be devastating. Unfortunately, Worley said, at this point there is simply no way to tell just how significant the impact will be (see sidebar, below). Most businesses in Goochland will see some negative impact, but those in the so-called “hospitality sector — including restaurants, breweries and wineries — will likely be hit the hardest. In an effort to help those business owners, as well as the many others facing significant

revenue losses, Worley has spent the past week scrambling to gather as much information as she can. There have been conference calls with regional and national groups, and websites created to help connect owners to the Virginia Department of Small Business and other resources. After a recent move to the new Goochland County Business Center in the courthouse area, Worley now shares office space with the Goochland Chamber of Commerce, an arrangement that she said has helped the two groups coordinate a response to the outbreak.
Goochland Chamber of Commerce office manager Kimberly Nelson said last Friday that she had spent the past week working to spread the word about local businesses that are still open, and to help provide information and support in whatever way they could. Despite the significant challenges local business owners now face, Nelson said she has also been encouraged by their response. “So many people are doing amazing things and really thinking outside the box to get through this, Nelson said. Elk Island Winery has begun taking cheese plates
and wine to people in their cars the way carhops once did, Nelson said, and Virginia Longarm, a quilting company in Oilville, has been holding its quilting classes online. “Everybody has really come around and it is just phenomenal the things they are doing, Nelson said. As for the Chamber’s efforts, Nelson said their goal right now is to work with owners to figure out what they can do to eventually rebuild. “Once this is all done, she said, “we will need to figure out how we are going to get all of these businesses up and running again.

For library patrons, closure means curbside checkout, encouragement from staff By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Last week, as the county continued to brace for impact from the worldwide coronavirus outbreak, the Pamunkey Regional Library system announced that it too would be closing to the public and would not reopen until March 28. But while volunteers were told to stay home and patrons could no longer enter the building, the crisis did little to deter library staff from making sure that residents could still have access to what they needed. In addition to extending the borrowing time on books and movies, Goochland Library Branch Manager Janet Melton said Friday that libraries in the area have quickly mobilized to provide curbside service to residents who needed to check

out materials. “We offer so many digital options that people can use these days, but there are still a lot of people who prefer the real thing,” Melton said. Those who come to the library for the high speed internet have been connecting to the WiFi from the parking lot and working in their cars, she added. Of course, the coronavirus outbreak has already presented many in the community with challenges that will linger on long after the library reopens. Melton said she and her staff have been doing whatever they can to help lift the spirits of those who have visited in recent days. Across the Pamunkey Regional system, staff members have been assembling personalized “Cheer Packs” for young library patrons, featur-
ing books (parents may call in to provide information on their child’s favorite author), coloring sheets and other items. The staff at the Goochland Library has also posted encouraging notes and colorful posters on the door. “We miss you,” said one, while another reminded patrons that “This too shall pass.” As they wait out the closure, the staff inside is spending time doing extra cleaning around the facility and making sure everything is order when they are finally able to reopen. Like everyone else, Melton said, they are doing their best. “Obviously it’s stressful,” Melton said. “But we’re getting through it.” For more information on library programs, visit www. pamunkeylibrary.org.

Finding joy amid chaos worth the effort By Roslyn Ryan Editor
As we move forward through the upcoming weeks and months, coming to grips with — and recovering from — the worldwide coronavirus outbreak, there will be no shortage of sad news to report.
And unless you have a heart of solid rock, it is probably going to be broken more than once. My own has taken a beating over the past few days — as I’m sure your’s has too — watching the impact the mass shutdowns have had on so many of our local businesses.

All members of our community have been dealt some kind of blow. Already this pandemic has robbed so many young people of everything from sports seasons to graduation exercises. Older people have been forced inside, and the most vulnerable — nursing home residents — can no longer have visitors.
In a time when everything seems to be spinning out of control, the virus has even taken the one thing we typically have left when everything else is gone: the ability to gather together and lift each other up. see COVID-19 > page 7

In 1970 I started work for Mr. Bill Parrish at 2799 Sandy Hook Rd and now, after 49 years in the automotive business, I will be retiring from the same location. Woodson Auto Sales has been in business for the past 22 years and effective March 31, 2020, I will be closing the doors. I would like to thank my many customers, friends and neighbors for your business, waves and horn blowing as you drive by. To Mr. George Smith and Fonz Cooley, thanks for your service to me by stopping and picking up my trash. Your kindness will never be forgotten. I have truly enjoyed getting to know my customers and keeping them driving in the quality vehicles they have owned and still own. Now everyone knows that I can’t sit still, so I will be doing mobile detailing and I will still have my hand in helping you find a vehicle, it just won’t be full time. Win or lose, professional golfer’s treatment of fan proved who he is By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
As we watch golf on Sundays, it’s easy to forget the majority of professional golfers who struggle through tournaments around the world seeking that upgrade to major tours or fighting for that one exemption that will give them an opportunity at a major tournament. Even those who travel with that exalted status play a daily game of how to maintain top level play and retain their status in the big league. Brandon Matthews is one of those pros, waiting for a chance to break through, sink that one putt that places them among the elite. Last year, it appeared those efforts would finally pay off, but it wouldn’t come easy. Embroiled in a heated fourhole playoff with fellow golfer Ricardo Celia and an invitation to the prestigious British Open on the line, Matthews felt confident as he lined up an eight-foot putt that would ensure the playoff’s continuance.

As he began his motion, a fan yelled from the gallery, and a seemingly easy putt slid past the hole. Matthews was visibly upset by the disturbance, thinking some overzealous fan had intentionally caused the disruption and allowed his Colombian opponent to capture the title, and a trip to the British Open. Tournament officials immediately apologized to Matthews and offered an explanation of the outburst. The fan who yelled in excitement was a mentally challenged lover of the game who had become overcome with the moment and screamed with excitement. Matthews immediately asked to meet the fan and assured the overzealous fan he was not angry. The two talked and hugged, with Matthews eventually gave the fan a signed glove and ball. It was a moment of spiritual renewal in a world where many high-profile players seem out of touch or detached from the crowds who watch breathless with each stroke. While Matthews’ game
may still have a ways to go before we see him at the top of the leader board, he’s achieved a social maturity and understanding that has alluded many of his colleagues. His act of kindness toward the fan speaks volumes about the soul of the individual, and the people who raised him. Matthews’ mother worked in group homes with mentally

Perhaps, that involvement allowed him to immediately recognize the situation at Argentina’s Visa Open last year. After the incident he told reporters he didn’t want anyone to be mad at the fan, and wanted to make sure the fan knew he was not angry with him. He gave the fan a big hug before signing the ball and glove, a gesture returned with a big smile from the fan. The whole incident provides a heartwarming testament to the goodness of humanity, and the compassion of one man who has chosen his path, with eyes wide open. Asked about the incident following the disappointing loss, Matthews put the disappointing loss in proper perspective. “Some things are bigger than golf, and this was one of them,” he told reporters. COVID-19 continued from >6 Yes, we are battling the nastiest of enemies, and this is an ugly, brutal fight. But there is also, undoubtedly, the need to make room for something else. For the next few weeks, we here at the Gazette will be devoting this space in part to sharing the many stories of how our community is coming together to get through this crisis, donating time, looking out for those who need help, and sharing whatever resources exist. Of course, we will continue to report the news about the impact of COVID-19 and our local government’s response, as well to provide the most accurate and up-todate information about how residents can best protect
themselves and their loved ones. Here, however, on this page, we would like to create at least a little room for some good news, even when it’s tough to come by. Do you have a story to share about someone from our community going above and beyond to help a neighbor, or perhaps want to recognize one of our local first responders? Maybe you would just like to tell us about the time you have been able to spend with family, or a way you’ve managed to make working from home work better for you. Whatever your thoughts are, we are looking forward to hearing from you and weathering this storm together. Even in the worst of times, perhaps it is a gift to find out how strong we really are.
Matthew 13:7 “Others fell among the thorns, and the thorns came up and choked them out.” Matthew 13:22 “And the one on whom seed was sown among the thorns, this is the man who hears the word, and the worry of the world and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful.” A parable in verse 7 and explained in verse 22 reveals a trap that maybe the most fall into. We are busy with hobbies, sports leagues, and working hard to be successful - but multitudes allow that “busyness” to crowd out the eternally important – a healthy and fruitful spiritual life from the Lord. The recent ban on gatherings of more than 10 people due to the ongoing coronavirus outbreak has forced local venues to cancel all March weddings. While some hope that the situation could improve before the busiest wedding months ahead, uncertainty lingers.

The COVID-19 outbreak has led to the postponement or cancellations of countless events, but for wedding venue owners like Robin Lee, the ban on gatherings of more than 10 people has been more than just an inconvenience. Lee owns Running Mare, a wedding venue in Maidens, and said Friday that she had spent the last several days working with brides to schedule back-up dates for weddings that may be impacted by the outbreak. She does not plan to hold any events before April 18, and anyone with an event scheduled in April or May has been asked to select a backup date just in case. So far the brides-to-be have taken the news well, Lee said. “All have been really sad, but they have also been extremely kind.” Lee, who opened her facil-
ity two years ago, said she actually counts herself among the luckier venue owners: since she only does weddings and events from April to June and from August to October, she had a number of alternative dates she could offer her clients. “I don’t know what I would do if I couldn’t do that,” she said. “I really feel for those larger venue owners.” Of course, it isn’t just the wedding venue owners who are concerned about the future. Lee said she recently spoke with a caterer who isn’t sure if she will be able to purchase supplies for upcoming events. Hair and make-up professionals, limousine services and photographers will all likely see a drop in revenue as well thanks to the crises. With venues having to cancel events, everyone is essentially left out in the cold. Bandit’s Ridge owner Donna Reynolds spent last Friday informing five brides
that they would need to reschedule their weddings. She also worked with five other clients to refund deposits for events — including birthday parties and retirement celebrations — that were going to be cancelled. A wedding can be moved, she explained, but a birthday party makes little sense to hold a month later. Reynolds said she was refunding all deposits for events that had to be cancelled. “So many people are really hurting right now,” she said. “I feel like it’s my duty to do what I can to help. It might not sound like much, but $100 can mean a week’s worth of groceries.” It had been a draining week, Reynolds admitted, but she was happy she was at least able to offer some comfort to most of her brides. “At the end of the day, they said they understood,” Reynolds said. “They are just happy they have a date.”

Spring sports cancelled for the year Staff Reports
There will be no more high school spring sports in Virginia this year. After multiple school closures and postponements, Virginia Gov. Ralph Northam on Monday ordered that all public and private schools in the state close for the rest of the year in order to slow the spread of COVID-19. With schools closed for the duration of the 2019-20 academic calendar, all athletic activities have effectively been cancelled for all schools in the Virginia High School League and all schools part of the Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association. That means
the remainder of the spring seasons for Benedictine College Preparatory School have been cancelled, and that none of Goochland High School’s spring teams will get to play a regular season game in 2020. Northam initially ordered that all schools close beginning Monday, March 16, and through Friday, March 27. K-12 schools are not the only ones affected. The NCAA cancelled all winter and spring championships on March 12. Many area colleges have since announced that they will remain closed through the rest of their academic years. Goochland High School’s season would’ve been pushed back to Tuesday, April 14, after school
closures were extended through Saturday, April 11. But as the coronavirus continued to spread and the number of people who tested positive for the contagion both in the state and nationwide continued to increase, further closures and cancellations seemed imminent. The cancellations mean that there will be no local sanctioned high school games between now and the 2020 fall season. The Virginia High School League, which on Monday afternoon confirmed the cancellation of all VHSL spring sports and activities, was scheduled to hold a conference call Tuesday morning with its VHSL Crisis Management team to discuss all options relating to spring
sports and academic activities following the current academic year and into the summer. The VHSL said it would announce a decision on Tuesday following the meeting. The result of the decision was delivered after press time and can be seen in the updated story online at www.goochlandgazette.com, as well as in the upcoming April 2 print edition of the Goochland Gazette. “We need to support our Governor and State Superintendent. These actions were taken to protect Virginians, keep them safe and healthy and to help slow the spread of the COVID-19 virus,” said VHSL Executive Director Dr. John W. “Billy” Haun. “Our Crisis Management team
is made up excellent school representatives and has been vital in all deliberations regarding COVID-19. In every situation, every decision we make has been, and will be, in the best interest of public health, including that of, most importantly, our student-athletes, coaches, administrators and families.” Sports Editor’s Note: Despite the cancellation of the rest of the spring season, the Goochland Gazette remains committed to sharing stories that highlight the contributions of our athletic community. Story suggestions can be emailed to nvandeloecht@powhatantoday.com or called in to 540-728-0549 between Monday and Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Coach Nadder reflects on season, looks ahead Staff Reports
The growth of the young Goochland wrestling program continued this past winter as two wrestlers, freshman Reese Vincent and senior Connor Duncan, represented the Bulldogs in the Class 3 state championships, a notable improvement over last year when Goochland was still in Class 2 and didn’t have anyone compete in the tournament. In his first match, Vincent, wrestling at 138 pounds, ran into the No. 1 wrestler in his bracket, eventual state champion Patrick Jordon (New Kent) and took a loss by pin. With the loss, Vincent was bumped to the elimination bracket, where he lost by pin to Liberty Christian’s Connor McCann. Duncan, wrestling at 220, lost his first match to Spotswood’s Benjamin Conahan and, in the first round of the elimination bracket, took Tabb’s Xavier Martin to overtime but lost by a 4-2 decision. “It was a good experience for both of them. I’m sure, since Reese is just a freshman, he will be back for the next few years.” said Mike Nadder, who led the Goochland

wrestling team as the head coach. The Bulldogs are losing several seniors following the conclusion of the 2019-20 season. “We are really going to miss my 170 pounder, Jon Daly, who was such a big part of the team and [whom] everyone counted on for leadership,” Nadder said. “He had a tough weight class and was not able to qualify for the state, but he remained the team leader.”
The Bulldogs will also miss Ethan Ford, whom Nadder described as one of the strongest kids he’s ever coached. “He worked harder than anybody in the off-season, but unfortunately he ran into a couple of studs in the region tournament and was not able to qualify for the state tournament,” Nadder said. And Duncan, who this past football season achieved Second Team
All-State, First Team All-Region and First Team All-District and helped his Bulldogs football team reach the 2019 state semifinals, was also named the most valuable wrestler by his team for the 2019-20 season. “I’ve never seen an athlete come along so far in such a short period of time,” Nadder said. “This was technically his first year of wrestling and had he been with the team the year before, I believe he would’ve placed
in the state. He had an unbelievable run and I’m very proud of him.” Team managers, Rilie Bass and Bre Johnson, both of whom were a huge part of the program according to Nadder, are also graduating this year. “Next year is going to look quite different,” Nadder said. The Bulldogs are expecting to see Wrestling> 10

Looking back on the 2019-2020 wrestling season
File/Goochland Gazette
From left, clockwise: Goochland’s Jon Daly wrestles Cosby’s Cole Giegling; Max Moreno (right) takes on Midlothian’s Robbie Painter; Riley Hite controls his match with King William’s Trevor Black; Ayden Doczi attempts to bring down Benedictine’s Logan Cohn; John Summitt works to pin Powhatan’s Natalia Sanchez.
Wrestling continued from >9 return Ayden Doczi, who at the moment is likely to compete as the team’s heavyweight, and are also bringing back a couple more upper-weight wrestlers who did not make the starting lineup this year. “I’m really excited to see how things pan out next year because we have so many middleweights coming back,” Nadder said. The Bulldogs had multiple freshmen,
including Vincent, Riley Hite and John Summitt, start this year. They also have several wrestlers who will be competing in their third year, including Will Browning, Grant Heidel and Blake Smith. “Expecting some good things from Max Moreno and Corey Vincent who will be seniors next year and [in] their fourth year with the team,” Nadder said. “I expect them to do very well next year.” The key, he noted, is going to be getting all of the right people in the right weight classes and not having any good wrestlers sitting.
Nadder said that, while their team record was not very impressive, the Bulldogs probably had the toughest schedule of any high school in the Richmond area because of their division and who they were wrestling. “We wrestled three of the top five teams in the area including Benedictine, Cosby and Powhatan,” Nadder said. “My kids did not back down to anyone and always came out aggressive. “I set such a tough schedule so that we could be ready for the postseason and not get caught off-guard at any of the tournaments.”
Following the end of this season, Nadder is stepping down into a volunteer role. His assistant coach Jeremy Wampler, whom Nadder said worked extremely hard with some of the middle school kids and with trying to establish a younger base so that the program can continue to grow, will step into the role of head coach next year. Nadder said they’ve established themselves as an up-andcoming program, and that they will continue to wrestle some of the top teams. “And at some point,” he said, “we will beat them.”

County confirms third case of COVID-19 infection Contributed report
The Chickahominy Health District (CHD) has now confirmed three positive COVID-19 cases in Goochland County. The first positive COVID-19 case, reported last week, is a male in his 60s who is now resting at home and following self-isolation instructions. The disease was likely acquired from close contact with a confirmed case while traveling outside of Virginia. The second positive COVID-19 case is a female in her 50s who resides in Goochland County. The individual is resting at home and following self-isolation instructions. The disease was likely connected to a known positive case in the central region of Virginia. TUESDAY EVENING 4 PM 4:30
The most recent case is a male in his 60s who is following his doctor’s instructions and self-isolating at home. The CHD is continuing to investigate this third case. “As we continue to see new cases of COVID19 in our community and throughout Virginia, it becomes even more critical that people follow public health recommendations on social distancing and good hygiene,” said Chickahominy Health District Director Dr. Thomas Franck. “Social distancing is one of the most effective strategies in lessening the impact of an epidemic such as COVID-19.” As of today, people should avoid social gatherings of more than 10 individuals.
