hen Goochland resident Melvin Morris noticed that his prized class ring was missing, he assumed it had been misplaced somewhere in his childhood home. The year was 1981, Morris’s senior year at Goochland High School, and the ring featured both a blue sapphire — his birthstone — and a basketball, since he played on the Bulldogs’ team. Sadly, the ring never did turn up. And when Morris’s family tore down the family home to make way for a new one, he assumed that the ring had been lost for good.

The Rotary Club of Goochland has announced the dates for the Goochland Oktoberfest, the club’s premier fundraiser for 2017. The first Oktoberfest will be held from noon to 6 p.m. on Sept. 30, at Benedictine College Preparatory (12829 River Road). Drug take-back day set for Oct. 28 Event will help residents to dispose of unwanted or expired medications Contributed report

Signage like this is part of an effort by Goochland County to keep litter from accumulating along the county’s roads, particularly near local convenience centers.

Litter continued from >1 Central Convenience Center (1908 Hidden Rock Lane) and Western Convenience Center (3455 Hadensville-Fife Road). The county encourages drivers to cover their loads and keep trash off the road by using cargo nets or similar devices. Securing loads when hauling trash and other materials helps prevent items from leaving truck beds or trailers, reducing litter and roadway hazards. The give-away is part of the multi-pronged approach Goochland County staff are taking to combat the ongoing issue of trash along county roadways. Other methods include policing high traveled/high litter areas with General Services staff as well as working with residents to help report areas where VDOT can provide roadside litter removal. General Services staff have posted signage at both the Central and Western Convenience Centers remind-

ing and educating users about the need to “cover their loads to prevent littering. In addition to roadside litter collection efforts, the Department of General Services is working with Parks and Recreation staff as well as with the Friends of Goochland Parks to educate residents and facilitate clean-up efforts through the organization and implementation of two seasonal events, Goochland Green Day and Autumn River Day. Each event offers litter prevention and education programs as well as clean up opportunities in Goochland parks and other designated

areas. Opportunities also exist for residents to volunteer towards litter removal efforts. VDOT offers an Adopt-A-Highway program and provides bags and other materials at no cost to volunteers. The Goochland AntiLitter and Recycling Council (GARC) offers an “AdoptA-Spot program and works with VDOT on anti-litter efforts. For more information on these opportunities to volunteer, visit www.virginiadot. org and www.goochlandva. us. To report roadside litter issues, contact VDOT at 800PRIDEVA.

Statue issue merits dialogue

After Harvey, lending animals a helping hand

By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist

Goochland residents have long held a reputation as devoted animal lovers, so it shouldn’t have been a surprise that the county came out in force to help support animals left homeless or hungry by recent natural disasters. On Aug. 30, residents donated three truck loads and a trailer load of food and supplies within 24 hours for animal impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

A reminder of what loss, sacrifice really are By Roslyn Ryan Editor

Last Sunday, I had a lot to get accomplished. So when I marched out of the house at around 10:30 that morning — carefully crafted list in hand, game face on — I was a woman on a mission.

Soon enough I was on my way and happily checking things off: Dry cleaners, grocery store, car wash, craft store, drop off a package, pick up a tube of something or other my husband needed from the hardware store — check, check, check, check, check and check. Before long it was mission accomplished and all, it

seemed, was right with the world. Sometimes, when life gets like this — when you find yourself completely wrapped up in the goings on of your own world — it is not totally unhelpful to get a reality check, even if it has to happen a bit violently. As I was strolling through one

Richmond and its surrounding counties were beginning to feel their oats during the mid-1950s, and the plight to suburbia was beginning in earnest as young families flocked to outlying areas to pursue their vision of the American dream. My family was no different when we moved to the outskirts near Staples Mill Road, and, slowly but surely, our trips in to the city became less frequent. As time passed, everything we needed was within a stone’s throw. We shopped at the A&P at Libbie and Patterson, and got home supplies at Spotless Hardware located a few doors down from High’s Ice Cream. We still made the trek downtown when we really needed something, or visited the Lowe’s Theatre for a movie premiere, but the majority of our life centered around our home in the suburbs. That was true for everything except medical care. The untold number of medical office buildings that now dot the landscape to Short Pump and beyond did not exist. As a child, going to the doctor or dentist meant a trip down Monument Avenue to Lee Medical Building situated directly adjacent to the famous statue of Confederate General Robert E. Lee. The building seemed new and modern at the time, and, somehow, you felt like you were in a big city when you rode the elevator to your desired floor. To a child, the building was cool but the monument beside it offered much more intrigue. The general seemed near tears as years of decay had turned the once bronze statue see Statue > page 7

Statue continued from >6 into a blue green mess. Even in its uncared for state, the monument seemed bigger than life to a young child, and, although I knew little of the man on the horse at the time, he became an instant hero in my mind. I assume that a city that would name streets, buildings, schools after the man would have certainly done their homework. It was much later in life I learned of Southern heritage and history, a glorified past associated with moonlight and magnolias that still evoked memories of times gone by for many Southerners. Years later, the city cleaned the numerous statues and they were returned to their bronzed brilliance, and Gen. Lee seemed more dignified with his recently cleaned attire and magnificent Traveler, cleaned and polished from hoof to mane. But, the clarity of the dedication and loyalty became less obvious to me. Somewhere along the line, I learned that respect for the man did not equate to an endorsement of the

cause. Even later in life, I realized a symbol that evoked some sense of pride in many was offensive and obscene to other Americans. Years after I first visited Lee Medical Building, the statue is at the center of controversy, and last week protestors for and against the statue rallied at its base to exercise their first amendment rights. With the memory of Charlottesville fresh in our collective memory, many feared the worse when the opposing groups mingled. Thankfully, that was not the case, and Richmond maintained its reputation for peaceful protest in a forum where all views should be welcomed. The discussion regarding statues on Monument Avenue will continue, and who knows where the General and his horse will eventually land. But, even the most dedicated Lee fans will attest it’s a discussion worth having and an issue that shouldn’t be evaded. Our nation does not have an immaculate past — no country does, — and we can’t correct or erase mistakes made by our forefathers. But, this weekend’s rally in Richmond

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor proves that discussion can be civil, and protests needn’t rely on violence for effect. It’s hard for me to imagine a Monument Avenue without the symbols that represent its title, but, in recent months, I’ve realized the statues mean different things to different people. But, I doubt many who pass the monument daily view it as a celebration of past wrongs or a glorification of one race over another. At some point in our history, tens of thousands of Southerners chose to follow these men into battle, and most of them never owned a slave. I’d like to think the statue honors the men, not the cause. Others don’t see it that way, and I understand their sentiment. Most of us are open to compromise, and many more are ready to tackle more timely matters or address inequities that continue today rather than attempting to right a nation’s past wrongs. Last weekend’s rally underscores the fact we can have the conversation, and that’s an important message for a nation — and a credit to the city that hosted it.

I had no way of knowing, of course, who the owners of the vehicle had lost, whether it was one of the thousands of young men and women killed in Iraq and Afghanistan or a loss from an earlier conflict, but the image of the vehicle, and the feelings it stirred up, remain with me a week later. Thinking about the driver of that SUV, I reflected on the 1.2 million men and women here in the US and around the world who serve our country every day. I thought about the disconnect so many of us feel from that lifestyle and those sacrifices, how many of us don’t even have a cursory knowledge of what American service men and women faced in Iraq and what they continue to face in Afghanistan. I thought about the goals of my

own day, how big and important they had seemed that morning and how victorious I’d felt to have accomplished so much. I thought about the last five or 10 things I’d complained about (long line at the post office, husband not emptying the dishwasher, etc), and I thought about all the dinner plans and movie openings I’d considered so important. I thought about all of this, and then of the owners of that vehicle in the parking lot, who will never be able to think that making it to the dry cleaner before it closes is a victory, or that cancelled dinner plans are a loss. They know — they have been forced to know — what victory and loss really are. As so many of us have been going about our daily lives, America’s military members and their families have been making untold sacrifices so that we can continue to do so. Even if we consider ourselves good, patriotic Americans, sometimes it helps us in the civilian world to get a wake-up call. On that early September day in a bustling parking lot, I was thankful I got one.

Cole Nuckols (6) puts some fancy moves on Nottoway’s Steven Coles (5) in last week’s Bulldog victory over the Cougars, 31-7. Nuckols played an expanded role on offense and provided his usual solid performance on defense. The Bulldogs move to 4-0 as they prepare for a bye week.

Goochland heads into bye week on hot streak By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Writer

“If you would have played that way the first half, the score would have been 31-7 at the half,” coach Joe Fowler told his troops after the team’s fourth victory of the season over visiting Nottoway. Indeed, it was a tale of two

halves for the Bulldogs who faced a Cougar squad that for two quarters, looked like they had the Bulldogs number. The Nottoway defense didn’t take the fake on Goochland’s vaunted running game, and yards didn’t come easy in the opening period. “They came out and punched us in the mouth

in the first half defensively,” Fowler said. “They had nine guys in the box and did everything they could to take away Jasper and our inside run game, but that opened us some outside stuff for us and gave us some good looks in the passing game.” And Nottoway’s passing game puzzled a Bulldogs sec-

ondary not accustomed to an aerial assault that dominated the Cougars’ opening series. “They came out throwing the ball a lot more than we had seen on film and it took us a little while to get a handle on what they were doing, but our defense locked down and did a great job all night,” Fowler said.

The Bulldogs scored first on a Jasper Carter run, but the Cougars answered in dramatic fashion as wide receiver Tariq Smithers gathered in a short pass from quarterback Cameron Reekes and covered the remaining 65 yards on his own to knot the game at 7-7. Shortly before intermission, Bulldog quaterback

Devin McCray found Devin Schoolcraft with a 30-yard touchdown pass to give the home team a 14-7 lead at the half. Zach Gordon added to that lead with a 35-yard third quarter field goal, and John King see Football> 12

Roundup: Bulldogs golf approaching playoffs By Billy Fellin Sports Editor

While the rest of the fall sports are just getting going in the regular season, the Goochland golf team is preparing for the playoffs. On Sept. 13, the Bulldogs faced off against Randolph-Henry and Central Lunenburg in James River District matches. “We had a strong showing,” coach AJ Nash said. “We shot 170, RandolphHenry shot 164 and Lunenburg shot 183. I haven’t seen any time come within six (strokes) of RandolphHenry in quite some time. It was fun to give them a scare.” Overall, the Bulldogs will finish third in the district behind the Statesmen and the Chargers. “Randolph-Henry and Central Lunenburg beat us twice (this season),” Nash said. “We’ve beaten everyone else.” Goochland will play in an 18-hole district tournament on Sept. 19, but Nash said that particular tournament is a merely a warm-up for the region tournament. The region tournament is going to be a crucible for all the teams involved as only one team will advance to the state tournament, down from the two teams that have qualified for the state tournament in the previous classification system.

Football continued from >11 stopped a Cougar drive with a spectacular diving interception. The Cougars never recovered, and Goochland’s defense upped its game for the reamainder of the contest, pitching a second half shutout. Quincy Snead led all Goochland rushers with 77 yards and provided a second half spark with several long runs that eventually set up a McCray

“There’re 13 teams for one spot and five individual (qualifiers),” Nash said. “If everything falls into place, who knows, we could be that one team. I certainly hope to have a few individuals make to the state tournament.” Nash said that his team has been in its groove and everyone has been working hard. “It’s been a solid team effort,” Nash said. “Peyton shot 38 (in the district tournament), he’s been the consistent low scorer. Meghan shot 42. She’s been playing well the last two weeks. Zack Potts shot 44. Jackson Raines has been struggling this season, he shot 46. At practice, he shot 38. We kind of figured something out with his game.” Nash said that the district finish wasn’t where he wanted his team to be, but feels the team is poised for a good showing at the region tournament on Sept. 26. “We didn’t play well against Central Lunenburg,” he said. “I would have liked to have been one (finishing position) higher. We’re playing our best golf at the right time, toward the end of the season.” The Virginia High School League state championship is Oct. 9-10, with the girls zone qualifiers taking place on Oct. 16-19. The VHSL girls state open will take place on Oct. 23-24.

pass for a touchdown. Snead also recorded an interception in the team’s fourth victory. “Quincy Snead is stepping up in a huge way,” Fowler said. “He is just a sophomore and he is electric with the ball in his hands. We need to continue to get him touches because he is a playmaker.” Cole Nuckols also played a big role in last week’s win, adding another dimension to Goochland’s running game and solidifying the Bulldog secondary wherever needed. “Cole had

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL Goochland’s girls volleyball team continued its strong season with a 2511, 25-5, 25-19 win over Bluestone on Sept. 14 and a 25-10, 25-21, 25-15 win over Collegiate on Sept. 18. The Bulldogs cruised in set one and started set two on a hot streak, highlighted by a 7-0 run keyed by Trinity Wonderling’s dominance on the service line. Wonderling had 29 assists, four aces, three digs and three kills for the Bulldogs, while Kealie Lachniet had 17 digs. While Collegiate made some moves to cut into the Goochland lead, the Bulldogs were able to keep the Cougars at a distance and complete the sweep. “I’m happy with how we performed tonight,” coach Jennifer Erixon said. “The higher level of competition really brings out the right mindset in the girls. I thought we played very well.” Alexis Wiggins had 13 kills and six digs for the Bulldogs, while Maddie Goff had 10 digs and six kills. Trinity Wonderling had 33 assists, 12 digs and four aces. The Bulldogs only two losses this season came during the Virginia Volleyball Showcase event at Richmond Volleyball Club on Sept. 1 and 2. Other than those two matches

a solid game on Friday. We asked him to change positions on defense due to an injury and then play more offense than he had been recently. He did a great job, especially on defens,” Fowler said. Carter added a late touchdown to make the final 31-7. The victory earned the Bulldogs their fourth win and something much more important to the team at this time – a week off. Fowler said it’s a well deserved break for the team. “The bye week couldn’t come at a

against Glen Allen and Massaponax, the Bulldogs have put together a spotless record thus far. Yet, Erixon said that the team sometimes still struggles for its rhythm. “It depends on the set,” she said. “We’ve been working a lot on certain things, like on offense with our passes and sets and being able to move the ball around more. It’s nice to see when

we transfer that into games and see if it works out or not. I don’t want them to get frustrated when something doesn’t work right away. There is that learning curve that they have to get used to. We’re making some good progress.” The Bulldogs returned to the court on Sept. 19 at home against Randolph-Henry and then traveled to Prince Edward on Sept. 21.

better time,” he said. “We are beaten and bruised physically right now. It has been a rough stretch starting with the scrimmages with Hanover and Monticello and then the first four games. We need to get ourselves healthy and get ready for the stretch run,” the coach added. Fowler said the team will utilize this week to refine some things. “We are still making a lot of foolish mistakes on offense that have resulted in negative plays,” he said. “The offensive line in particular has struggled

with their assignments. Some of our running backs are doing a great job with the ball in their hands, but are still struggling to block, Fowler said. The coach knows those are just some of the thing thats have to go right to remain undefeated as the schedule tightens. “These are things that we will have to get straight in order to keep winning.” Goochland will return to action on Sept. 29 on the road against Buckingham.

CANCER • Jun 22/Jul 22 Cancer, slow down a little because moving faster will not get the job done right. It may only lead to sloppy mistakes that will take even more time to handle.

LIBRA • Sept 23/Oct 23 Libra, if you push yourself a little harder this week, you will be happy with the results. Even though it may be an uphill battle, the summit will look pretty nice.

TAURUS • Apr 21/May 21 Many things around the home need your attention, Taurus. But you may be having trouble finding the motivation to tackle them right now. Get a partner to lend a helping hand.

LEO • Jul 23/Aug 23 It can be challenging to find initial support for your ideas, Leo. However, once you explain all of the specifics, there’s a good chance others will climb on board.

SCORPIO • Oct 24/Nov 22 Scorpio, just when you think you can lie low and escape the week without any excitement, something pops up that requires all of your attention. Hunker down for now.

AQUARIUS • Jan 21/Feb 18 Sometimes the things that require the most work are the ones that you enjoy the most, Aquarius. Dig in deep on a new project and the rewards will come afterward.

GEMINI • May 22/Jun 21 Gemini, make a concerted and sincere effort to focus on family for the next few days. It’s time to reconnect with everyone in the house, and you will enjoy the time at home.

VIRGO • Aug 24/Sept 22 Risk can sometimes have a large payoff, Virgo. Just make sure you time your jump right or you could miss an opportunity to really shine.

SAGITTARIUS • Nov 23/Dec 21 Sagittarius, focus on something new for a while rather than a problem that has been bouncing around in your brain. Frustration will get you nowhere, so let it go for now.

PISCES • Feb 19/Mar 20 A few things still need to be sorted out, Pisces. Then you can put your feet up for the time being. Gemini has something to say this week.

CAPRICORN • Dec 22/Jan 20 Capricorn, even if you take some time off from work, things will go on as planned. Although you are a key member of the team, others can temporarily fill your shoes.

THIS WEEK’S ANSWERS

ARIES • Mar 21/Apr 20 Aries, when an opportunity comes your way, resist the temptation to pass it up thinking something better is on the horizon. There are no guarantees, so make the most of this chance.
