GHS band gears up for competition By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Goochland High School Marching Band director Jay Sykes is proud of the 40-plus members of his group, which performed at the school’s last home football game of the season Friday night. “It takes a lot of patience, which these kids are rock stars at,” said Sykes. The band has one more competition coming up this Saturday at Mills Godwin High School; their last appearance will be in the Richmond

Christmas Parade December 4. Sykes said about 20 bands will compete in six categories at Godwin: Color guard, music, marching, percussion, drum major and general effect. For someone who doesn’t play a musical instrument, it may appear deceptively simple when the band takes the field for its performance. But it’s not easy at all. “They have to learn some pretty difficult

Goochland Middle School is taking on bullies. The school has introduced a new prevention program and some new anti-bullying rules. Students and staff kicked off the program October 8. Assistant principal Christin Ciminelli said that although there is not a big bullying problem at GMS, the goal is to be “proactive rather than reactive.” “You hear about it in the news,” said Ciminelli. “Kids don’t want to come to school, their grades drop, they get depressed.” She recalls getting a phone call from a parent whose child didn’t want to come to school because of bullying. “I want the kids to know that they have people to talk to,” said

Ciminelli, who said she had been thinking about the problem even before she attended an antibullying conference in 2008. After receiving information from School Superintendent Linda Underwood, Ciminelli applied for and received a $7,000 grant from VCU to start the program, which is based on the Olweus Bullying Prevention Program, a widely used program that is a proven way to reduce bullying incidents, said Ciminelli. Trainers came out to work with the faculty in October 2009. And this year the school formed their Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee composed of students, teachers and staff and

community representatives to put the program into high gear. The students promoted the October 8 assembly. “We read bullying stories and made signs and posters,” said 6th grader Riley Powers, 11. “The posters had all the bullying rules on them and we went around waving them.” The entire student body attended. “We had a skit with the teachers to represent the bullying thing,” said seventh grader Andrew Harcum, 12. Seventh grader Hunter Bailey, 12, played one of the bullies. Bailey described their skit, where he badgered another actor for help on a test. “I said if you don’t give me the answers to the test I’m going to beat you up after class,” said Bailey of his role. “We tried to give examples of different kinds of bullying with the skits,” explained Ciminelli. There are member ways students are pushed around, said Ciminelli, citing cyber bullying, physical bullying,
verbal bullying, exclusion and gossip. Using the skits and reading stories about kids who have been bullied, the committee members encouraged all students to adopt the following anti-bullying rules: 1. We will not bully others. 2. We will try to help students who are bullied. 3. We will try to include students who are left out. 4. If we know that somebody is being bullied, we will tell an adult at school and an adult at home. There is some bullying going on at the school, said seventh grader Daric Clarke, 12. “Like little verbal stuff.” But there’s also some confusion about bullying as opposed to teasing and horseplay. “Bullying is a one-person thing against another person, and it’s a constant thing between those two people, where one person is being continually hurtful,” said Ciminelli. Now that the program is started the committee will hold monthly meetings. And there is a community component, with Brian Sniveley of the Goochland YMCA working with the

music as well as the drill,” explained Sykes. There are more than 50 “sets,” or formations the band must learn to perform during their half time show. “They are the hardest working kids in the school,” said Sykes. Sykes said high school marching bands in Virginia are divided into several classes, depending on the number of members in the band. Goochland competes in single A, the smallest. Schools with larger bands compete in divisions all the way up to AAAA. At their most recent competition at Blue Stone High School in Mecklenburg County the band won first place for drum major, first for percussion, first for marching, first for music and first for band. The drum major award was the best in show, beating all the bands which competed, regardless of size, said Sykes. Sykes, in his second year as marching band director, said the band’s routine consists of three contemporary tunes: “Fanfare for the Third Planet,” “Into the Light” and “Ascend.” Sophomore trombonist Jessica Liddle, also know as “Bob,” said there’s a lot of

After spending nine years at James River Correctional Center for grand larceny and receiving stolen property, Mark Finch has been on the outside for four months. Now he’s got his own business going, called Five Star Canine, thanks to a program run by FETCH a Cure, a local nonprofit organization devoted to improving the life of pets. Through a partnership with the Virginia Department of Corrections, inmates at Virginia correctional centers - James River Correctional Center, Buckingham, Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women and Lunenberg Correctional Center – train and socialize rescue dogs. They do so with guidance and instruction from two professional dog trainers in a program called Pixie’s Pen Pals. Pixie’s Pen Pals is a former program of Save Our Shelters, which dissolved in August of this year. The program not only lowers the rate of euthanasia in Virginia’s city dog shelters, but also provides life skills to inmates. “It changed my life,” said Finch. “It helped prepare me for when I got out.” FETCH a Cure was chosen to take over that program, which takes dogs from Richmond Animal Control and the Southside SPCA shelters. On average, 50 inmates are enrolled in the program each year and 220 dogs are adopted out through the program. FETCH a Cure touts the program as promoting inmate rehabilitation and increased positive interaction between correctional staff and inmates.
“Inmate handlers learn viable job skills and some have gone on to become professional dog trainers following release,” according to a recent press release from FETCH a Cure. Finch, 30, who spent a year and a half in the program before his release, would agree. “It’s a good opportunity for the inmates,” said Finch. “It’s therapy both ways, for the inmates and the dogs.” Finch said the program teaches responsibility and helps inmates meet people with positive lifestyles. “Once I got a taste of it there was no turning back,” said Finch, who said he has always loved dogs. Inmates who are in the program take responsibility for the dogs 24 hours a day while they are being trained and socialized. Sometimes when they have to give up a dog, it can be hard, said Finch. “It gets real emotional to let them go,” he admitted. One of Finch’s favorite dogs was Brice, a dog he trained as a service dog for a woman who suffers from seizures. Now, running Five Star Canine, he trains dogs from rescue groups and helps get them adopted. Finch said his success with the program helped pave the way for him to start his own business when his sentence was up. “I made a name for myself,” he said, admitting that without the program he wouldn’t have known where to start. NEWS: What’s Going on in Goochland County
North Pole restaurant in Goochland closed for now, offered for sale Future is unclear for county mainstay; currently offered at $599,000 By Louis Llovio Media General News Service
The North Pole restaurant, a mainstay in Goochland County for decades, has closed — for now. The restaurant, which opened in 1924, has shut down as the family of owner Dick Rossi decides its future. Rossi, who bought the restaurant in 1979, was killed in an automobile crash in May. A sign posted yesterday on the door of the steak
and seafood eatery on state Route 6 said the North Pole will be closed until the family “announces its plans to fill his very big shoes.” It’s not clear when the restaurant closed. The note said the family thanked customers for 80 years of support. The North Pole has been placed for sale with Henrico County realty company Neumann & Dunn Real Estate and Development LLC. The listing describes the North Pole as “a household name with a strong, loyal customer base” built over years of continuous ownership. The restaurant sale
price is listed at $599,000, according to the listing with Neumann & Dunn. Rossi first put The North Pole up for sale in 2007. At the time, published reports said he was asking $975,000. When it opened in the 1924, the restaurant was called The North Pole Confectionary. It served lunch and ice cream curbside. In the mid-1930s, Harvey Layne, an employee of The North Pole, bought the business and added inside seating. Layne owned the restaurant until he retired and sold to Rossi in 1979. Rossi said last year the key to success was his dedication. “In our particular

Bullies One thing I have learned during this election season is that intolerance has not yet been defeated in this country. For adults, intolerance can come out in ways both overt and subtle: Through offhanded comments, the choice to hire one person over another, the vote for a candidate that upholds stereotypes and irrational fear. For children, that intolerance can be murky and dishearteningly confusing. If a child is singled out by other kids, adults, or cultural mores, then he or she is learning that the world is less than fair; it is fully capable of judging a person for reasons unrelated to words or deeds. For these kids, the world can be a gray and gloomy place where what people know is less important than what they assume. Whether politicians are donning Nazi costumes or are warning against gay pride parades, or youths are being attacked for their choice of sexual orientation, some people are showing that they lack a fundamental respect for their fellow human beings or an ability to discuss issues rather than reacting to them.. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says that bullying is a lot more common than people realize; studies show that between 15 and 25 percent of American students are bullied regularly. That’s 15 to 25 percent too many—no child deserves to be hit, mocked, intimidated, excluded or cyberbullied. But that’s what’s happening, and it is unacceptable. Goochland Middle School has introduced a new bullying prevention program that involves students, teachers and the community, and an integrated approach seems to be the only way to address the problem. As parents, and as aspiring members of a responsible society, we need to teach children that it is never ok to bully anyone. And it’s not ok to watch bullying take place, without offering protest or assistance. Because to do so is to tacitly condone the cheapening of our shared human experience. If you, or your kids, want to learn more about bullying, check out the U.S. Deparment of Health and Human Services Stop Bullying Now! website at www.stopbullyingnow.hrsa.gov/kids/ - Amy Condra

Supporting our schools There is no doubt that unlike some, I am conscious of my incapacities. We all (students, teachers,
parents, administrators, taxpayers and county officials) have expectations regarding the educational process. No party involved is innocent in this situation. I think that we all do share the common goal of providing the best education for our students in the most responsible manner. We are under enormous additional pressure due to the economic mess we are confronting and probably will continue to be surrounded by for some time into the future. The economic situation has sharpened and focused
OPINION: Letters to the Editor the debates regarding the educational process in this county. The tactical details seems to have, at times, overwhelmed the strategic details in many ways and have resulted in ranting, farcical characterizations, demanding that freedom of speech should be unbridled in its expression. As some lawyer stated, screaming fire in a crowded theater is not a protected right under this amendment. One saving grace for this county is that there are members that behave as if it were really a community, dedicating themselves, time, money and
effort with no pay and no need for recognition to support the education of our students. A friend argued to me about how this volunteerism can be viewed in the negative and could result in attempts to raise taxes. How others view what is being attempted to increase the ability of our students to succeed in this very competitive world is of small concern. If you are afraid of your taxes being raised, you can vote your thinking. Another important dimension of community involvement is that it bridges well between the

VCCW Assistant Warden Joan Kerr retires Joan Kerr put in 38 years with Department of Corrections By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
As s i s t a n t Wa rd e n Joan D. Kerr is calling it quits after 38 years with the Department of Corrections. He spent the last 13 years at the Virginia
Correctional Center for Women in Goochland. Next stop? Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, where she and husband John plan to spend their golden years in their retirement home. Last Friday a gym full of co-workers and others gathered at VCCW to give her a sendoff featuring a series of speakers at a luncheon ceremony. “We’re here to celebrate Joan’s 38 years of service,” said VCCW warden Tammy Brown.

“One chapter ends and another begins,” said Brown, who said Kerr had touched many lives as a leader, mentor and friend. DOC Deputy Director for Human Resources Paul Broughton recalled recruiting Kerr back in 1972. “We know we got an angel when she came to work for us,” said Broughton. Former VCCW Warden Wendy Hobbs said she and Kerr had been “an excellent team,” since they were opposite personalities. Hobbs said she and Kerr had a good working relationship. “Joan and I, we used to fight,” said Hobbs, adding that their relationship was good enough that they could always work things out and end up on the

All through the ceremony Kerr’s infectious laugh could be heard, and speaker Bill Crenshaw made reference to that in his remarks. “I need to meet the person attached to that laugh,” Crenshaw recalled thinking before he met her in 1985. Crenshaw read a tongue-in-cheek list of “Conditions of Release” for Kerr, which including such rules as “no getting up before 9 a.m. and no work after 3 p.m.” “You guys have touched my soul,” said Kerr when it came time for her to speak. “You love what you do, not many places have that,” said Kerr.

Bulldogs continue drive to post season with 37-21 victory BY JIM RIDOLPHI Special Correspondent
Last Friday, the Goochland Bulldogs finished the home portion of their 2010 schedule with a 37-21 victory over Jefferson District opponent William Monroe. For the Goochland seniors, it was a final chance to play a regular season game at home, and the capacity Senior Night crowd wasn’t disappointed. Some of the graduating players have spent five years in the program and Goochland coach
Joe Fowler admits it’s going to be tough to say good-bye to them. “This is such a great senior class and we’ve spent so much time with these kids,” Fowler said. “It breaks my heart to see them go, and hopefully, they won’t be leaving anytime soon. Hopefully, we’ll make the playoffs and they’ll get their money’s worth. They are quality young men.” Donning black jerseys with pink numbers in recognition Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the Bulldogs wasted no time taking the lead as Dustin Plummer broke free on a 66yard touchdown dash early in the opening quarter. Quarterback Cody Johnson got the start when Ryan
Crouch was diagnosed with a concussion suffered in the Louisa contest the week before. According to Fowler, the level of play remains constant with Johnson calling the signals. Johnson managed a Goochland offense that continued to march up and down the field in the first half. Plummer found pay dirt again as the second quarter opened on a 30-yard strike from Johnson following a Colby Cooke field goal late in the first period. The Dragons were forced to punt on the ensuing drive, and GHS returner Mason Engel made short work of the 60 yards in front of him, giving the Bulldogs a 23-0 lead. The Dragons fought back to score a late first half touchdown
when quarterback Mitchell Morris found Doug Sizemore with a four-yard pass. McKenna opened Goochland’s second half scoring with a 26-yard touchdown run in the third quarter. Ryan Coles added to the Bulldogs lead with a fourth quarter 19yard. The Dragons added two late scores, making the final 37-21. Bulldog running back David McKenna turned in his usual solid performance with 154 yards on 19 carries. Plummer added 70 yards on four carries, while Coles added 84 yards on 14 carries. Plummer had two scores, while Coles and McKenna recorded one each. Fowler liked some of what he saw, but noted other areas
needed work. “We played well at times and not so good at others,” he said. “We’ve got some stuff to work on for next week.” The Bulldogs take on a much-improved Western Albemarle team on the road Friday night needing a win to solidify a good playoff seed. Western Albemarle is 4-4 overall and suffered a 44-19 setback loss to Orange last Friday night. The week before they limited William Monroe to a single score in a 31-7 win. “We’ve got to get ready to play Western because they are darned good football team right now… much improved and playing good on both sides of the ball,” Fowler said. Artist Sharon Guyton Lalik opens show at Cultural Arts Center
The Bucket Fillers at Carver Elementary Conributed Report
Everyone at Carver Elementary School is carrying around a pretty heavy bucket. Their pails aren’t filled with sand, water or seashells, but something much more valuable: positive attitudes, relationships and actions. Based on the book “How Full is Your Bucket” by Tom Rath, the students and staff have realized the importance of filling each other’s “buckets” every day. A children’s version of the inspiring book tells the story of a little boy named Felix. The book explains the importance of being kind toward others. Using the metaphor of a bucket and dipper, the story explains how others can either fill up or dip from another’s bucket, leaving that person feeling positive or negative. The idea to make the book into a school-wide initiative for positive behavior came from school counselor Betsy Yakin. After reading the book, students in every grade brainstorm ways to fill or dip a bucket. Photo by Ken Odor

sit with at lunch, I’ll sit with them,” said student Jenny Jarrar. “I think it’s really awesome. It’s a good idea that you can have an imaginary bucket over your head.” Buckets line the halls and fill each classroom--plastic buckets, buckets on bulletin boards, name tags shaped as buckets, and pencils lined with the words “I am a bucket filler.” “Overall, it is raising the awareness of how words affect other people from the bus to the end of the day,” said Yakin. “I’ll overhear this theme. The kids will say, ‘You’ve just filled my bucket’ or ‘That was a drop in my bucket.’” Most teachers use the theme as an incentive program to encourage good behavior. When a student is overheard filling another student’s bucket, a teacher may add an item (such as a marble or cotton ball) to the class’s bucket, until it’s full, resulting in a class prize. If a student dips from a bucket, an item is removed.

Western Henrico Rotary Club Golf Tournament raises $24,500 for Scholarships Contributed Report
The Western Henrico Rotary Club raised over $24,500 for scholarships at the annual Becky Briggs Memorial Golf Tournament on Columbus Day at the Crossings Golf Course. The tournament is named after a 17-year-old senior at Mary Mount High School, who was killed in an automobile accident in 1990. Her father, Cordell Briggs,
is a member of the Western Henrico Rotary Club. According to Christina McClung, club president, since it began in 1991, the tournament has provided for nearly $100,000 in scholarships that have been given to approximately 60 students. The remaining balance of the money raised from the tournament is held and managed by The Community Foundation. Steve Esbach, event chair-

man, said this year’s tournament raised the most money in the history of the event. Funds are raised primarily through entry fees, raffles, hole sponsorships, dinner and a silent auction. Esbach noted that the majority of sponsorships come from members of their Rotary Club and their companies. Proceeds are used to provide scholarships for graduating seniors from Hermitage, Tucker and Freeman high
schools who plan to attend a 4-year college or community college. Recipients are selected from those schools because the Western Henrico Rotary Club sponsors Interact Clubs at those locations. In addition, two scholarships are awarded to students attending J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College who have completed at least one year of study. Esbach said scholarship recipients will each receive
$2,000 this year. The Western Henrico Rotary Club also gives $500 each year to the libraries at Crestview and Johnson elementary schools in Henrico County, where a number of Western Henrico Rotary Club members serve as volunteers in the reading programs. The deadline to apply for scholarships is March 1. For more information, visit westernhenricorotary.org.
