ust in time for the 2015 rec basketball season, Goochland County officials gathered Saturday to officially open the newly renovated Central High School gymnasium. The first phase of a planned renovation to what was once the county’s black high school, the improvements to the gymnasium on Dogtown Road will add much-needed playing space for recreational basketball players county-wide.

Health officials brace for flu’s worst To combat spread of the virus, doctors urge those infected to stay home By Jodi Deal Richmond Suburban News
Urgent care clinics, doctor’s offices and hospital emergency rooms across the country have started to fill up with people showing symptoms of influenza, more commonly known as the flu. According to Dr. Thomas Franck, director of the Chickahominy Health District, which
includes Goochland County, influenza cases are measured at four levels of activity by the Virginia Department of Health: 0 is no activity, 1 is sporadic activity, 3 is regional activity and 4, the highest level, is widespread activity, which means at least three of Virginia’s five regions have experienced significant outbreaks. Virginia hit level 4 in early December 2014 and has remained there since, Franck said. By mid-January, 45 states had reached widespread status, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC). Despite concern over the effectiveness of this year’s flu vaccine and increased media reports on the illness’s spread, Franck said the
progression of flu cases in Virginia has followed a somewhat normal arc this flu season, hitting “widespread” status in about the average timeframe. That said, health officials are bracing for a tougher than normal season as time wears on. “This year, I see Flu > 4
From the moment her friend picked up the phone, Goochland resident Gracie Taylor knew something was wrong. “I thought maybe I woke her up,” Taylor remembers. “I couldn’t understand what she was saying.” Taylor had been hoping to catch up with her friend earlier that day at their church, Salem Baptist in Crozier, but the two had missed each other. Now, as Taylor struggled to make sense of what she was hearing on the other end of the phone, she began to suspect her friend might be in trouble. Could she be having a stroke? “I asked her if she needed help,” Taylor said, but — even after she got off the phone — she still wasn’t quite sure what she should do. Ultimately, despite her concern that she could have been over-reacting, Taylor went with her gut and called an ambulance, directing them to her friend’s home about 12 miles away. As it turns out, the call may have saved her friend’s life. “By the time I got there the ambulance was already there and they were bringing her out,” Taylor said. see Stroke > 4

Flu continued from >1 think we can anticipate it will be somewhat worse in terms of the number and severity of cases,” Franck said. “I think we’re predicting that we’re going to see more hospitalizations this year, and possibly more deaths.” That’s due to something called antigenic drift, or a shift in the makeup of the virus. According to the CDC, the influenza virus is constantly changing. This usually happens from one season to the next, but can happen within a single flu season. In order for a vaccine to be ready by fall, the viruses in the vaccine must be chosen in February, according to the CDC. This year, the vaccine was based on a commonly circulating H3N2 influenza virus. However, in the months since they picked the specific antigenic formula for the vaccine, the virus has changed.
By Dec. 27, 2014, the CDC reported that 68 percent of the viruses isolated in the United States since Oct. 1 had drifted from the viral makeup the vaccine was based on. “That means the vaccine may not work as well this year,” Franck said. In a normal year, the CDC estimates that the flu vaccine will protect six out of 10 people from the vaccine, Franck added. This year, that number is far lower. But Franck doesn’t recommend totally writing off the flu shot if you haven’t yet had one – quite the contrary. Although those who have been vaccinated have a higher risk of catching the flu this year than in an average year, those who had the shot are still likely to experience reduced symptoms and, more importantly, less likely to end up in the hospital. In some hard-hit areas of the United States, school divisions have temporarily closed and hospitals have limited operations. So far, there’s no need
for such action in Goochland County, Franck said. “I think those would be last resort efforts,” Franck said. “Influenza can be picked up at school, but it can also be picked up at the mall, at parties and in your home. When influenza outbreaks occur, they typically sweep through pretty much every neighborhood in the US. About 25 percent of the population will be exposed.”
An ounce of prevention Local health officials are emphasizing the same flufighting tactics they do every season: Get the vaccine and practice common sense measures to prevent infection and spread of not only influenza, but other viruses. It s very important to remember good hygiene practices, Franck said. Wash your hands with soap and water. Cover your mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. Generally, we recommend sneezing into your upper
Enjoy Retirement
sleeve, but the alternative is to sneeze into a tissue, dispose of that tissue and wash your hands afterward. No matter how clean you think your hands are, Franck said it’s a good idea to avoid touching your nose and mouth, because those are major gateways through which the flu virus can be introduced to your body. Health officials also recommend what they call “social distancing.” That means to stay home if you’re sick and, if you’re not sick, stay at least six feet away from those who may be ill. Neither of those practices is particularly easy in this day and age, Franck added, but both remain important.
Respond quickly to symptoms, says CDC According to the CDC, the flu usually comes on suddenly. Symptoms can include fever, feeling feverish or chilly, cough, sore throat, see Symptoms > 5

‘Woodchucking’ program has value by helping those in need Contributed Report
Rotarians have a longstanding reputation for raising money and donating those funds to worthwhile causes. However, the work of Rotary goes far beyond simply writing checks. Just ask a “woodchucker” from Goochland Rotary Club. “Woodchucking,” as it is affectionately called, has evolved into one of the Goochland Rotary’s major service projects. Members cut, split and deliver firewood to those in the county who cannot afford to heat their homes. Much of the wood is donated by a single resident of the county who prefers to remain anonymous. Some 8,000 households in the county are in desperate need of assistance. More than seven percent of the county’s citizens live below the poverty level. It’s these people the Rotary Club of Goochland strives to help. Households receiving the free firewood are recommended by Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services. Lowe
Symptoms continued from >4 runny or stuffy nose, muscle or body aches, headaches, fatigue and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea. Not everyone with the flu will develop a fever. If you develop flu-like symptoms, Franck stressed that you should call your doctor. “There are anti-viral medications now, for example, Tamiflu and Relenza, that have been shown to be very effective at reducing symptoms,” Franck said. In addition, some anti-
Lunsford and Knight Bowles, who jointly head the project, report Rotarians delivered 102 pickup truck loads of firewood so far this season to needy Goochlanders. More will be delivered in the weeks ahead. In addition to providing free firewood to the needy, the club offers wood for sale. All of the funds generated by the firewood sales flow to various charities serving Goochland County. So far this season, the club has sold 29 cords of wood. Since launching its woodchucking program five years ago, the club has generated more than $22,000 in firewood sales. All of the firewood is fully seasoned hardwood. One cord of wood (two pickup truck loads) costs $150; a half-cord is $95. For more information and to place orders, visit www.gooch-

viral medications may be prescribed to other members of a household, especially elderly or health compromised people, in an effort to prevent infection. With such medications, Franck said speed is key. “In order for an antiviral to work, it has to be given within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. The earlier, the better,” Franck said. “Every hour you delay makes it less likely to work and less effective if it does.” Franck said elderly people and those with pulmonary problems or other serious
medical issues may want to discuss flu prevention, including preventive doses of antiviral medications, with their doctors. For more information, visit cdc.gov/flu or vdh.virginia.gov. Selling a House in Manakin-Sabot?

From a fevered brain, a rash of new insights By Roslyn Ryan Editor
At this point in my life, I like to think I know the signs of the dreaded “flu bug” pretty well. The marquee symptoms, of course, are as follows: fever, chills, sore throat, nausea and on and on. If you’ve ever had it, you don’t need me to paint too fine a picture (if you haven’t, see the article on page 1). What I’d managed to forget — and didn’t remember until being knocked sideways by a case of the flu last week — was one more symptom that sometimes accompanies a bout with influenza: a nagging introspection, born from an inability to do anything but lie in bed and stare at the ceiling (since my eyeballs were the only things that didn’t actually hurt). As anyone who has ever found themselves with a good, old-fashioned case of the flu can attest, there comes a moment when you realize that you have forgotten what it feels like to not have it. But then also comes the realization that you will —eventually — be well again. And that was the thing my fever-wracked brain seemed to seize on last week, turning it over and over as I stared at that blank expanse of ceiling. I guess it’s not something

one thinks about until there is nothing to do except think, but just the fact that a body can heal itself is a pretty amazing thing. As bad as you feel when you have the flu (and I felt like I’d been run over by truck), your body is already at work repairing the damage and restoring everything to working order. You don’t even have to do much (save for the few tips included in this week’s article). My point? In ways we see every day, and in ways we rarely think about, our bodies are amazing. People are amazing. Every single walking, talking, breathing human being is a marvel. Perhaps this was really just a case of a fevered mind run amok. But it seemed to me that if we spent more time considering what a wonder each and every one of us is, so many of the terrible injustices and human rights violations we have seen in recent years — and you can choose from scores of them — would never have happened. This was one of two very important things that occurred to me while I was laying there last week, trying to remember what it felt like to not be sick. The other thing? Next year I am getting a flu shot.

One quick question ... Jaymi Bell, a junior at Goochland High School, is currently serving a term as the student liaison for the Goochland County School Board. When she isn’t attending monthly School Board meetings, Bell is an honor roll student, a GHS varsity cheerleader and a member of the National Honor Society. We recently caught up with Bell to ask her why she thinks the liaison provides a key link between the board and the student population.
“I
think having a student liaison on the Goochland School Board provides the Goochland High School student body with an active voice; it gives visibility into important school and community-related priorities; and, it allows students, like me, the opportunity to experience leadership opportunities early on in life. In this role, students will also have the chance to provide feedback on new ideas and suggestions that the School Board plans to implement. It School Board is a true honor to be able to serve my student liaison school and the community in this way and I feel strongly that this role adds great value to Goochland County.”

When will they choose our song? By Jim Ridolphi Contributing Columnist
I’m not exactly sure why most states have what they consider an official state song — one ballad that captures the spirit of the state and its inhabitants. I’m even less sure when the state song gets played. Do they belt it out before inaugurations or blast it over the loud speaker at football games or is it a more subtle symbol? Honestly, official state anything can be taken to the limit. Some of our neighbors have state insects, dogs, key chains and anything that can be labeled their own. It’s largely unimportant. Virginia, like all the other states, once had a state song. As a child, I remember it being played and sung at the State Capitol. Almost two decades ago, the Virginia General Assembly decided
that a song that contained the word “darkies” might be offensive to some state residents and removed it from the official list. “Carry Me Back to Old Virginny” evoked memories that most don’t have regarding our beautiful state. For 17 years, state officials have searched for a new song, one that Virginia can truly call its own. In the end, none has made the final cut, and, for years, most legislators stopped trying. In the 1990s, a legislative committee reduced the number of candidates from hundreds to just eight, but the selection process never went further. Robbin Thompson and Steve Bassett penned “Sweet Virginia Breeze” back in the 1970s as they sat on Thompson’s Floyd Avenue porch. Since then, the song has established a sentimental connection with many Virginians who say the lyrics capture the essence of the Commonwealth.
“Breeze” made the final eight two decades ago, but a winner was never chosen. Now the popular song is back in the race again. State Sen. Walter Stosch, R-12, introduced a bill in this year’s session of the General Assembly to make “Breeze” the official state song. It’s not the only candidate for the prestigious title of state song. “Our Great Virginia” by Mike Greenly and Jim Papoulis also is officially being considered for the honor after House Speaker William Howell, R-28, filed a bill to make the song the official state song of the Commonwealth. “Virginia, the Home of My Heart” by local artist Susan Greenbaum also is being considered, introduced in the form of a bill introduced by Henrico Del. John O’Bannon, R-73. So, after being absent for many years from the agenda, it seems the see Song > page 7

they wrote the song in the late 1970s. Although the pair has never lobbied for the song’s acceptance, both would welcome its official designation as an honor and tribute to their many years of musical influence on the state scene. Artists of the competing songs can make the same claim and all three selections would make appropriate state songs.
I’ll trust the politicians to come up with the right selection, with a subtle reminder that it’s time the Commonwealth had an official song — again. In the meantime, I’ll borrow a line from “Breeze” to leave you with an image: Take me out to the country I feel mighty good out there

For resident, ‘Army strong’ more than just a slogan Bryant helped found Pray4Clay Warriors group (Editor’s note: Goochland’s Heather Bryant recently was selected by our readers as an Inspiring Goochland Resident of 2014.) By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Let a loved one know just how much you care this Valentine’s Day.

Goochland resident Heather Bryant may not have served in the military, but that doesn’t mean she has ever been one to back down from a fight. Case in point: When Goochland resident Del Clay, a 32-year military veteran and the husband of one of Bryant’s closest friends, was diagnosed with a rare form of pancreatic cancer last year, she knew she could not simply stand by. After
hearing that the treatments doctors had recommended for Clay — after his stage IV cancer did not respond to any traditional treatments — would not be covered by insurance, she and Clay’s wife Melissa formed the Pray4Clay Warriors to help defray the cost. Bryant, who first met the Clays when her husband and Del Clay were in the National G u a r d t o g e t h e r, Bryant said she simply could not accept that someone she considered a hero could not receive the treatments he needed. “Del and Melissa, in the 14 years that I’ve known them, have always put the needs of others ahead of their own,” Bryant said. “And now, here he
was in the fight of his life. Being told ‘Sorry, Mr. Clay, we are not going to pay for this treatment’ was not an option.” Bryant and Melissa discussed ways to hold fundraisers, similar to the ones they had organized when their husbands were deployed to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004. They have already held several events, including a benefit basketball game and a spaghetti supper, and plan to hold more in preparation for Del to receive a round of treatments next month. To Bryant, the efforts are just one more example of how families like her’s and the Clays support one another. “Military families stick together,” Bryant said. “That’s just how it is supposed to be. I know that if the roll was reversed, they would be doing the same thing for us.”

Dear Reader, Communicating compassion to the brokenhearted is such a delicate message. By not wanting to say too little or too much, we fear we may find ourselves in one of those awkward moments either filled with silence or all the wrong words. When comforting a loved one, opening your heart and expressing empathy will be more helpful than well-meaning advice. Supportive words could be, “I’ll be here for you every step of the way or “It breaks my heart to see you suffer but phrases such as “Everything happens for a reason or “Time heals all wounds will not resonate fairly with a person who is
Ask Fern A Dear Fern, Like many people, I am always at a loss for what to say to someone who has recently loved a loved one. Can you offer a few tips for dealing with this situation, whether at a memorial service or in a condolence card? dealing head on with immeasurable grief. Such statements could even trivialize the mourner’s feelings. Validate the grieving person by allowing them to share their anger, sadness and frustration. For you to share in the burden is your most valuable skill as a friend. It is not your job to take away the pain. It is your ability to listen and to understand that will most aid them in their time of sorrow. Bring consoling words of assurance such as “It is so heartwarming to see that (the deceased) has left behind such wonderful family and friends who will be such a great source

Resident attends national Farm Bureau convention By Roslyn Ryan Editor
Goochland resident Wayne Pryor, now beginning his ninth year as president of the Virginia Farm Bureau Federation (VFBF), recently returned from the 2015 American Farm Bureau Federation’s annual convention in San Diego, California. The theme of this year’s event, held Jan. 11-14, was “Tradition, Perseverance, Vision: Farm Bureau Proud.” Among the topics discussed were the role of biotechnology in agriculture; tax reform as it relates to farmers; and the critical role Pryor of clean water in agricultural operations. Immigration reform was another item on the agenda. While noting that the issue is not typically a problem in Virginia, Pryor said maintaining an adequate labor force is critical for farmers in other parts of the country. “Crops won’t wait, even when there is a problem getting labor,” Pryor said. “Basically,
whatever Congress wants to do with immigration reform, we just want to make sure that Agriculture is at the table,” Pryor said. Asked what had changed in the years since he was first elected president of VFBF, Pryor said the most notable difference is how much more they are able to produce now from the same amount of resources. Agriculture, including forestry, is by far the largest industry in Virginia, churning out $78 billion annually. Nationwide, however, it doesn’t tend to stay in the spotlight. “Less than two percent of the population raises all the food, fiber and energy we use,” Pryor said. “I don’t know that agriculture gets all the credit it deserves.” He’s not complaining, he’s quick to note, but it is something to think about. With 128,000 members in 88 county Farm Bureaus, VFBF is Virginia’s largest farmers’ advocacy group. Farm Bureau is a non-governmental, nonpartisan, voluntary organization committed to protecting Virginia’s farms and ensuring a safe, fresh and locally grown food supply.

GHS Robotics team hard at work on 2015 project By Roslyn Ryan Editor
serious, or have there been funny moments embers of the “Junkyard Dogs” robotics team over the years?
M
from Goochland High School gathered at Virginia Commonwealth University on Jan. 3 to pick up the technical components they will need to compete in this year’s FIRST Robotics Competition. Teams have just six weeks to design and build remote controlled robots that will be asked to grapple totes, recycling containers and pool noodles. Along the way, FIRST participants will learn real-world job skills and become eligible for millions of dollars in college scholarships. Last week, we got the chance to chat with the team’s coach, Bruce “Doc” Davies.
How did you first get involved with robotics at Goochland High? “I’ve been involved with FIRST Robotics for over 14 years. I started as a volunteer at the Richmond competition moving from resetting the field to finally being a robot inspector and judge. Then my older son began to participate on the LC. Bird High School FIRST Robotics FRC team. I became a mentor for the team at that time, mentoring in computer-aided design, programming and computer related issues. The year after he graduated, my younger son became involved in the same team so I spent over eight years mentoring that team. A colleague of mine asked me to help with the Goochland High School team at the beginning of last year’s season since they were going through rough times. This will be my second year with Goochland. Prior to this I had no robotics experience, but quite a bit of technical experience with programming and computers.”
What do you enjoy about working with the program in Goochland?
“The answer to this question is always the kids. They keep me young and thinking. We’ve got some great kids on our team, very intelligent, willing to learn and work and generally just good-natured. Others are a challenge, but it’s a learning experience for me as well. I like to teach, and in a previous professional incarnation taught at a university. I also am constantly exposed to new technology, and this is a great benefit to me since I run a Makerspace in Chesterfield County now that I’m retired.”
What is the biggest challenge the team faces when it comes to the competition? “Time is always the issue. There’s never enough time! We have six weeks from start to finish to conceive, brainstorm, build, program, troubleshoot, optimize and get our robot finished. While I’ve done this for over nine years, not many of the kids understand the concept of “time urgency.” “The competition is usually designed to be very ‘doable’ for high school kids, but it does force them to be highly creative and inventive.”
Are the events mostly
“On the field, the competitions are very serious, but there are great funny moments. I’m always amazed when some of our rookie kids come in who have never handled a tool or written a line of computer code. But we’ve got to remember these kids are “geeks” and they are always amazing, creative and clever. The dancing that goes on at the competitions is always entertaining as are the costumes.”

The 2015 GHS Junkyard Dogs Robotics Team includes coach Bruce “Doc” Davies, mentors Brian Davies, John Julock and Will Davies and students Lindzea Franklin, Josh Hobbs, Chris Mann, Jake Liesfeld, William Glaveskas, Hunter Glaveskas and Max Spivey.
What do you think the students take away from participating in robotics? Why is it an important program at the school? “School systems, in my opinion, provide a great deal of information and knowledge for students. But, due to time constraints and local standards of learning, students never get sufficient “hands-on” time to practice the actual application of what they’ve learned. I constantly see students that come in knowing the information required, but have absolutely no concept of how to put it into practice in a real world problem. Robotics provides that avenue. It’s a basic FIRST Robotics tenant that mentors do not build the robot, so if it’s going to get built, the students have to pick up tools and physically do it. It’s this hands-on application that, in my mind, helps “set” the information they obtain in classroom settings. It also better prepares them for what they will actually face in their future professional job setting.”

TV LISTINGS: Find Local TV Shows and Movie Schedules
January 29, 2015
Ask Fern continued from >11 ess, I could be tempted in the direction of the most current and trendy magazines for the latest and greatest wow gadgets. But my better instincts remind me that a hostess gift should always always be personal and will be far more appreciated and meaningful if it comes from the heart and home. Everyone loves flowers and loves to receive flowers. They add to any occasion. If it’s spring or summer, you have the greatest advantage for snipping a few lovely sprigs and stems
of this or that and making a short, small bouquet. Holly, Ivy and pine, are great for filler while the main attraction can be pansies, tulips, roses, gardenia and the list goes on — if it’s blooming, throw it in there! If you have a mismatched tea cup, wine glass, or small tin container in which to put your handpicked gift, it will make for a lovely and unique presentation. Make your own tag by cutting it out of an old greeting card using the picture side only so that you can write on the other side a sweet message or old saying pertaining to the occasion. Make a hole in the

tag and string through it a pretty ribbon tying it to the handle or around the bunch of flowers. This is your calling card and what a pretty and lasting impression you have made! If nothing is blooming, edible gifts are quite useful and it’s easy enough to put together a simple basket with sassy cocktail napkins and delicious homemade nibbles. If the occasion calls for it, a bottle of sparkling cider or a bottle of wine in the hostess’ preferred red or white variety will make a splash! Wrap it up in a pretty tea towel and secure it with a strip of solid, coordi-
nating fabric. If you know your hostess well, think of his or her hobbies and play off of these for your gift ideas. Explore your garage, attic, gift wrap and craft drawers for materials and containers that will make your gift look like the special labor of love that it is. I’m sure you will come up with something fun and clever! Mrs. Smith-Cole is a wife, mother (of three), interior designer and active member in the Goochland Woman’s Club. Have a question for Fern? Send it to editor@goochlandgazette. com.
