Reliability car tour turns back the clock By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

“It will do 35 miles per hour going downhill with a tailwind,” said Terry Bond, as he got ready to start his Model T Ford with the hand crank last Friday. Bond, from Chesapeake, was among more than 40 participants in last week’s Antique Automobile Club of America 2012 Reliability Tour, which made a rest stop at Goochland Baptist Church Friday morning before continuing on to visit Tuckahoe Plantation that afternoon. The event was open only to auto-

mobiles manufactured in 1915 or before, said Richmond chapter president Andrew Fuhrman of Ashland. Chris and Jenny Sorenson traveled all the way from Australia to drive their 1903 Cadillac, which they garage in Pennsylvania, around the Richmond area for the five-day event, which celebrated the Richmond club’s 60th anniversary. Other participants came from California, Louisiana, Florida and Illinois. In all, 13 states and Australia were represented on the day trips, which averaged about 50 miles, see Reliability tour > page 4

Goochland man honored by Virginia Historical Society Contributed Report

At a special luncheon on July 18, 2012, the Virginia Historical Society (VHS) presented awards to individuals who have made significant contributions to research, education, and the mission of the society. Dr. Allen Frey of Manakin was awarded the 2011 Lora Robins Award for his work as a collector, preservationist, and educator. The Lora Robins Award, created in 2000, recognizes an individ-

ual who best emulates Lora Robins’s splendid leadership, generosity, and foresight in collecting the evidence of Virginia’s history for the benefit of future generations. For more than twenty-five years, Frey has been collecting historic items relating to the American presidency and political campaigning. He has willingly shared his extensive personal collection and knowledge with interested persons and organizations, including several collaborations with the VHS.

“I feel privileged to have worked with the VHS over the past sixteen years on exhibits about American and political history, Dr. Frey said. “I’ve always wanted to make my private collections accessible. Years ago I contacted the VHS so I could let students see items used in campaigns. It has been a great partnership. A total of nine VHS awards were presented to teachers, a collector, an author, students, volunteers, and staff. “It is in history that many

of us find comfort, that we find meaning, Dr. Paul Levengood, VHS president and CEO, said to award winners and their guests, trustees, and staff present at the event in July. “We are here as a refuge and as a place to learn and put our lives in context. What else but history, and perhaps faith, allows us to do that? With these awards handed out today you will see those who have excelled in the fields of scholarship, Contributed Photo service, and support of the Virginia Historical Society President and CEO Dr. Paul Levengood, right, with Dr. Allen Frey. South African Food and Wine Festival comes to Grayhaven By Korey Hughes Special Correspondent

South Africa boasts a rich culture, but many Americans will never get the chance to witness its way of life up close. The 7th annual South African Food and Wine Festival that will happen at Grayhaven Winery in Gum Spring on Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9, however, will give local residents the chance to see some of the country’s cultural experiences first-hand. Max Abrams of Grayhaven Winery said that her husband, Deon Abrams, is from South

Africa, and that the business began hosting the event after Max visited the country in 1999. “There was a disconnect between what I thought it would be like and what it was, Abrams said. “I was amazed and enthralled with the wine, the architecture, the landscapes, the cultures and the food because it was not what I thought I would encounter. “But, very few of us get the chance to visit because the plane tickets can be pricey. So, we thought having the festival would introduce people to South Africa. Grayhaven Winery is one of

the few American grape producers that grow and use pinotage, a South African grape variety, in its reserve. For that reason, the winery is well-known for using the crop, and Abrams said that it grows surprisingly well in Virginia. “We do less than 500 gallons of pinotage (wine) per year, Abrams said. “But, it’s a fantastic grape for the state of Virginia. “It’s interesting because, when you grow it in South Africa, it can be overly bold, and it’s hard for winemakers to work with it. But, Virginia has big, long, dry and hot seasons, see Wine > page 10

Olivier Lotterie from Vineyard Brands, left, and Matt Leader of The Country Vintner, based in Ashland, both experts in South African wines, will be at the festival to answer questions about wines and give information on the special vintages available at the event.

Local farms may want to brighten up their

and collect anything that’s fallen off,” joked Fuhrman of each day’s travels, which began Aug. 27 and concluded Friday. Two of the vehicles that stopped at Goochland Baptist included a 1910 Pierce Arrow, driven by Nevy and Kerstin Clark of Savannah, Ga. and a 1914 Pullman owned by Don Barlup of New Bloomfield, Pa., a National Director of the AACA. He explained his Pullman was one of only 25,000 built in York, Pa, from 1903 to 1017. He believes his 1914 model is the only one left from that year and said only 22 remain of the entire production total. The Pullman was not a cheap car in its day, said Barlup, costing about $2,400. His model 646 (six cylinders, 46 horsepower) was one of the more powerful of the early cars. “It has nice high horsepower – it goes up the hills,” said Barlup. Bond said his Model T came with a “southern tread,” two inches wider than standard, since it was made to “fit in the wagon wheel tracks” of southern dirt roads of the early days of motoring. Such were the challenges for automobiles a century ago, said Fuhrman, who explained that the name reliability tour came from similar events sponsored by car manufacturers to showcase their vehicles’ durabil-

entrances with a new painted sign. A 2’x2’ wooden sign will be designed and painted by all paying participants. Designs should be e-mailed to Rachel Grosse, rgrosse@vt.edu no later than 5pm on Tuesday, Sept. 4 or by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 2 for respective workshop dates. Pre-registration is required

ity. Goochland Baptist Pastor Dean Frazeur said the idea of having the church serve as a rest stop came from church member Wendell Bowles, an AACA club member. Fuhrman said the trip was a success and reliability was good. Only a few minor repairs were needed, including fixing a minor electrical problem on the Sorenson’s 1903 Cadillac. NAACP continued from > page 1 Both School Board Chairperson Beth Hardy and Vice-Chairman John Wright expressed regret during the meeting at the delayed response. Wright called the delay a“personal failure” and a “failure of the board if we have not addressed any of these requests…we have failed and I can do nothing but apologize,” he said. Hardy said “I don’t want it represented that we are not responsive. We did respond… this was an unusual situation and hindsight is 20/20 and the process is probably not the way we should have responded…” Acting School Superintendent Peter M. Gretz responded that a letter in response had been mailed the day before (Aug. 27). “I think it is patently false for us to say that neither has been addressed. They’ve been addressed not in writing but they’ve been addressed verbally on a couple of occasions,” said Gretz at the meeting, noting that much of the information

requested did not exist. Gretz said staff spent about a month on a response to the first letter that asked for information on the school resource officer and a month on the second letter. “I think the lesson learned is that in the future we need to process it as a FOIA request and if it doesn’t exist we simply don’t provide it,” said Gretz. Gretz said after the meeting that much of the information requested by the NAACP on The Academy, now called Goochland Prep, did not exist and he had hoped to provide answers to the organization’s questions outside the FOIA process. Gretz said he meets each month with NAACP representatives Shabaka and Elaine Wadkins and thought an understanding had been reached on how to provide the information requested “I was surprised to hear him [Shabaka] speak in that manner,” Gretz told the Gazette after the meeting. Much of the NAACP’s concern about Project Return stemmed from complaints it received that the program was

chaotic, that the academy was used as a school detention facility for “throwaway students,” Shabaka told the board. The program is housed in the old Goochland library building across from Goochland Courthouse. The building originally was the site of a bank. The school administration’s letter dated Aug. 27, 2012, provides answers to the questions posed by the NAACP. In other business, the School Board approved a revised budget that included the extra $410,000 allocated to schools by the Board of Supervisors this spring. The School Board also approved textbook adoptions for AP Spanish, AP Calculus, AP Human Geography, Debate and Forensics. The board deferred a vote for two weeks on a new policy for the admission of nonresident employee children. OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

September 6, 2012

They don’t build them like that anymore Cars, that is. I had the pleasure of dropping in on the Antique Automobile Club of America’s 2012 Reliability Tour for a few minutes last Friday as about 40 cars, dating from 1915 and earlier, and their drivers and passengers made a brief pit stop at Goochland Baptist Church. As I am sucker for any kind of old car event, it wasn’t hard to get motivated to check it out. America’s love affair with the automobile was in full swing when I was growing up in the ’50s. When we had nothing better to do, we’d sit out on the front porch of my folks’ house in Southside Richmond and watch the cars go by, particularly in the fall when the new models were unveiled. “There goes a ’55 Ford,” I might exclaim. “No, it’s a ’56, look at the grille,” my brother might have to correct me. Each year the big three -- General Motors, Ford and Chrysler -would make at least subtle changes in the body style of their vehicles, just to keep things interesting. So did American Motors and Studebaker – remember those names? America was on the upswing, gas was cheap, and the sky was the limit it seemed. A home for every family and a car (or maybe two) in every garage was the goal, it seemed. And the bigger and fancier the car, the better. My, how things have changed. Now, to put it bluntly, if I sat on those same front steps I couldn’t ID half the vehicles passing by. They kinda sorta all look the same to me. Maybe because the demands of fuel economy and passenger safety evidently dictate a similar body style, sort of little oblong bubble shapes. I’m not complaining. I’ve got one and it’s lasted a lot longer than any old heavy steel V-8 powered monster from back in the good old days would have. But, alas, it’s got no character. It’s just a tool, something I use to get from here to there. With global warming, the price of gas and traffic concerns, our attitude toward our vehicles has changed. Now we’re admonished to consolidate trips to save fuel and reduce pollution. No more cruising on 29 cents a gallon gas. We take our driving seriously. But I still remember the good old Sunday drive, hopping in the family chariot to ride around for a spell when there was some time to kill. I still remember Chuck Berry’s “No Particular Place to Go.” Well, I guess America’s affair with the personal automobile was just too good to last. But I sure do miss it. -Ken Odor

Letters to the Editor Choosing Henrico over Goochland I am surprised to read the controversy that seems to have engulfed Goochland County in rezoning residential land in an established community to allow encroachment by vested interests at the entrance of their subdivision, especially so when there is plenty of land zoned commercial within a stone’s throw of the same property. While I have no personal interest in this matter yet, I am retiring and moving to Virginia,

and was considering eastern Goochland as a possible area. And while looking at homes for sale in Bellview Gardens, a resident was kind enough to warn me of the developments taking place and the history behind the commercial interests that are pursuing this rezoning repeatedly. If this can happen in Bellview it can happen anywhere in Goochland. It appears the powers-that-be in Goochland seem to care more about wooing commercial interests than the welfare of

Wine continued from > page 3 and that grape responds much better to this environment.” Of course, wine tastings will be on offer along with samples of South African food. The dishes include familiar staples such as ground corn, but they are also heavily influenced by Dutch, Indian and Indonesian cultures because of settlers who immigrated there. “The food is really great,” Abrams said. “Much like the way that America is called the melting pot, South Africa is called the rainbow nation, so it’s a melding of the people’s cultures who have settled there.” “South Africa has one of the largest Indian populations outside of India, so they cook with a lot of curry. There are also Dutch influences such as sausages, and it’s absolutely delicious.” Not only will South African cuisine be made available, but an assortment of cultural items will also up for sale. Abrams said that Dumisile Nxumalo Martin, a Charlottesville resident who imports South African goods, will manage the festival’s market tent. Martin is originally from Manzin, Swaziland, and she began bringing in items such as crafts and jewelry from the aforementioned countries about 10 years ago. According to Abrams, making a purchase from the tent benefits the women who create them and their families back in South Africa and Swaziland. “The gal that is the host of our market tent is a really amazing lady from Swaziland, which is not in South Africa

but surrounds it,” Abrams said. “And the items come from women-owned cooperatives in South Africa and Swaziland.” “They empower women in communities that need to establish themselves in order to make their own money. If they don’t have money, (the families will) send male children to school and not the female children, but when they have their own money, they have more of a say about their children’s educations and more equality in their own communities.” Dance acts such as Juxtapower, a New York City-based production company that performs traditional South African routines and singer-songwriter Tuelo Minah, who plays blues and rock, will appear. And, if the cultural experience isn’t enough to entice you to attend the event, Abrams said that one lucky winner will win two round-trip tickets to South Africa courtesy of one of the festival’s sponsors, South African Airways. At any rate, there will be plenty for festival goers to see and do on Saturday and Sunday. “It’s kind of like a food festival, concert and wine festival rolled into one,” Abrams said. The South African Food and Wine Festival will happen at Grayhaven Winery at 4675 East Grey Fox Circle in Gum Spring from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, September 8 and Sunday, September 9. Tickets are $25 in advance and $35 at the gate. Children 17 and under will be admitted for free with a parent. Fall Sports and trips at Parks and Recreation announced Contributed Report

Goochland County Parks, Recreation and Facilities Management is offering several new programs this fall, including adult sports leagues as well as some exciting day trips! Beginning the second week of September, our fitness and athletics programs will kick off with both an adult flag football league and church league basketball. This year will be the first that we have offered leagues specifically designed for

adults, and we are looking forward to meeting this need for the County. Adult flag football will be played at our newest outdoor facility, Tucker Park, located on the James River at the Maidens Crossing loop. We will line the multi-purpose field that is right on the river as a full-size football field—the perfect location for some recreational play! We will have refs officiating and hope to have enough teams to set up a Super Bowl tournament at the end of the season in November. Team minimums are 10 players and the team fee

In the past, our youth recreational basketball league has been very successful, but we know that there is significant interest throughout the County for an organized adult league. Information has been sent out to over 50 churches throughout the County and we hope to have a great turnout for our first season, which runs September through December. Team minimums are seven

players and the team fee is $350. The Parks, Recreation and Facilities Management Department is also offering two family trips this upcoming fall. The first will be a trip to nearby Carter Mountain on Saturday, Sept. 15. We will provide transportation for all registrants, and all will be encouraged to enjoy apple picking and farm-fresh food at the Mountain. The cost of this trip is $5. Our second trip will be Thursday, Nov. 15, when the UNC Tar heels come to Scott

Stadium in Charlottesville to take on the UVA Cavaliers. This is sure to be a great game between two of the best teams in the ACC, not to mention it being Thursday night college football! Registration, covering the cost of the ticket and transportation, is $40 per individual and $100 per group of 3. The registration deadline for adult fall sports is Tuesday, Sept. 4, and for fall trips the deadline is one week prior to the event. For more infor-

Brice led Bulldogs crush Flucos, 42-6 By Jim Ridolphi Special correspondent

Goochland running back Mitchell Brice rushed for two touchdowns, caught a pass for another and returned a recovered fumble for a fourth, as the Bulldogs downed visiting Fluvanna, 42-7 on Friday night. On the night, Brice racked up 225 all-purpose yards. He picked up 147 yards rushing on six carries, added 42 yards as a receiver and tacked on 36 more yards on a fumble return. Four minutes into the first quarter, the Bulldogs had a 21-0 lead and Brice has scored all of the points. “He’s an electric football player,” said Goochland coach Joe Fowler said. “We haven’t cut him loose in the preseason. Tonight we gave him the ball in some big spots and it paid off. He’s a gamer who makes big plays in front of big crowds.” The Flucos entered the contest with confidence after last week’s season opening victory against Prince Edward, but they quickly found themselves in a deep hole at Goochland. On a hot muggy night, the Bulldogs utilized their familiar style of offense, relying on the run while playing bend but don’t break defense. Brice broke loose around right end on the Bulldogs’ first possession and scored from 47 yards out. Less than a minute later, he was in the end zone again, this time the result of a fumble recovery and a 24-yard scamper that put Goochland up 14-0. “The offensive line did a great job blocking and we played as a team,” Brice said. Goochland linebacker Rafer Sprouse picked off a pass from Fluco quarterback Dashan Tibbs, setting the Bulldogs up deep in Fluvanna territory. Brice finished that drive with a 24-yard run and the Bulldogs enjoyed a 21-0 lead with 8:45

remaining in the first period. “I saw an opening and ran through it,” Brice said, recalling his third score of the evening. Goochland quarterback Jordan Jefferson opened the second quarter with a 24-yard touchdown run to complete the first half scoring. The Bulldogs took a commanding 27-0 lead to the locker room. In the third period, Goochland’s Connor Saunders scored on a 49-yard run and converted the two-point conversion. The Bulldogs added another when Brice gathered in a Jefferson pass from 33-yards out following a Mason Engel interception. It was no accident that most of Brice’s yards came after the catch. “I read my wide receiver’s block and just cut off that and just got in, thanks to some good blocking,” he said. Austin Jordan came off the bench and led the Flucos to their only score late in the final quarter to avoid the shutout. Fowler was relieved his young squad was finally playing up to Bulldog standards. “We’re just pleased that we played well,” he said. “We hadn’t played well in the first two scrimmages. A lot of that was because we have so much youth in so many places.” The coach felt the Goochland seniors on the team played a major leadership role in the outcome. “Our seniors stepped up in a big, big way and when our younger kids got some opportunities, they made plays — especially on special teams,” Fowler said. Nathan Adams, CJ Johnson, Saunders and Engel all had solid defensive performances. Scott Pearce sat the game out with an illness but will return next week. Flucos coach Jason Barnett said his team was bruised but

not battered by the defeat and saluted his team’s tenacity and refusal to quit when the going got tough. “We kept attacking. We kept playing,” Barnett said. “They hit and we hit back, but we didn’t quit. That’s a step in the right direction for Fluvanna. I don’t like the score and I don’t like the way we feel right now, but on Monday, we’ll get ready for Spotsylvania.” Barnett felt Goochland’s attack was predictable, but almost unstoppable. “They run the same stuff over and over again but they’re so good at it,” he said. Goochland played the opener without the traditional logo and stripes on their helmets, thanks to the sub-par performances in preseason scrimmages. “We tell the kids you have to

earn those stripes,” Fowler said. “In our first two scrimmages, we didn’t earn those stripes so our helmets were blank tonight. “When we hit the field next week, we’ll have some.” The Bulldogs host Fork

Cadets overcome slow start to down Avalon 25-12 By Dave Lawrence Special Correspondent

When Avalon and Benedictine took the field at Bobby Ross Stadium Saturday, the two teams looked more ragged than right. But after nine minutes of frustration, the Cadets’ offense gained traction. They began what would be their first of four scoring drives as they handed the visitors from Gaithersburg, Md., a 25-12 defeat in both teams’ season opener. Both teams struggled with ball control and fumbles early on, but for different reasons, according to Benedictine coach Greg Lilly. Avalon’s troubles had something to do with their offensive formation – the single-wing, in which the tight end and a wingback are always aligned together. “When you run that single-wing, sometimes you do put the ball on the ground,” Lilly said. “It’s just, sort of, the nature of that offense, so theirs are understandable. “Ours weren’t. Our mistakes were just not focused. I don’t think that was because of a lack of effort. I think our guys were just really excited. They’ve been practicing for three weeks, ready to get out here and play somebody else, ready for a game situation. I think they wanted to make big plays early and guys wanted to score touchdowns. They forgot to carry the ball with them.” Benedictine got the fumbling bug out of its system, having one in each of its first two possessions – the second leading to a turnover. But almost the entire opening quarter passed before they earned the game’s first, first down on a drive that, early in the second quarter, resulted in the first touchdown, an 18yard pass from Bryce Hamilton to Scott Bracey. Unfortunately, after that first

touchdown, Benedictine failed to make good on a two-point conversion – a problem that recurred twice more. Because of a legacy of struggles in their kicking game, the Cadets repeatedly tried to go for two using a shape-shifting formation in an attempt to throw off the defense. Ironically, the only time they made good on a point-after was on a kick by Buddy Felch midway through the third quarter. “I will take blame for the second one that we missed. We should have just kicked it, that’s what we should have done,” Lilly said. “The kicking game has hurt us in the past. It is something that we are working hard on right now – I mean, our last game of the season last

year, the kicking game was a deciding factor. We as coaches have to continue to do a better job of putting an emphasis on that so we can get better at it. I’m glad to see Buddy made the one extra point.” Lilly said the shape-shifting may have to go, though. “All that trickery with the muddle-huddle and everything else might be gone by next week,” Lilly said. “We didn’t get any advantage by it, I can tell you that right now.” Benedictine’s offense, once it got started, proved it could move the ball. The Cadets amassed 299 yards total offense: 212 of those on the ground, led by Corey Downey with 24 carries for 92 yards and Lamar Webster with seven

runs for 83. “Once they got into a rhythm, we were able to turn out 190 or I think 180 yards total rushing, which is what we want to be [doing],” Lilly said. Directing it all was Hamilton, whose passing game played a key role in spreading out the Black Knights’ defense. “We feel good with Bryce at quarterback as far as being able to control the game, getting us in the right sets, getting us in the right plays. He did a good job of that,” Lilly said. “And he made some throws, too, which I think opened [the Black Knights] up a little bit, spread them out a little bit, and then we were able to run the football.” Avalon coach Tad Shields was impressed the Cadets defense, in particular No. 58 – Malcolm Alston. “We couldn’t get him blocked. That really slowed down our offense,” Shields said.

“He was just one tough son of a gun, that’s all. He didn’t do anything that most linemen don’t do, it wasn’t a technique or anything like that, it was just he’s a good ballplayer and he beat us to the line-of-scrimmage.” The Black Knights’ offense began to assert itself in the second half, scoring two touchdowns in the third quarter to close to 19-12, but the weather – which took a toll on both teams – took an especially hard one on the 30-man Avalon squad. “We don’t have a big squad, so a hot-and-humid day like today is tough on us,” Shields said. “Plus we had a few injuries along the way – nothing serious, but enough to keep them out of the game. We were thin to start with, and when you’ve got three or four players who can’t finish the game you have to suck it up.” Benedictine next travels to
