Cantor, Powell trade attacks at CarMax By Jim Ridolph Special Correspondenti
Accusations, innuendo and personal attacks were the order of the evening as Republican Congressman Eric Cantor faced off with his opponent in the 7th District, Democrat Wayne Powell. It was the incumbent’s first debate appearance since 2002. All seats were filled at the Car Max headquarters in Goochland for the Richmond Chamber sponsored debate. It didn’t take long for the discussion to become heated, and Cantor’s opening statement outlined a philosophical difference between him and Powell, a
lawyer and retired Army Colonel. Elected to House majority leader in 2010, Cantor centered his policy positions around a theme of lower taxes, fewer regulations and creating jobs. Cantor said those positions are in stark contrast to those of his opponent.“These two positions will take us to very different futures,” Cantor said. “One track leads to higher taxes, more regulation and less jobs. The other track means lower taxes, less regulation, more jobs, more success and more opportunity.” Cantor, 49, said while he supports see Debate > 14

On July 31, 2011, after smelling smoke and discovering a fire that had been burning for at least twenty minutes, Lance Corporal Creasey entered his team’s barracks rather than seeking safety. Risking his own life, he quickly worked to wake up his sleeping team members who had returned just hours earlier from a multi-day mission. Despite the thick, dark, toxic smoke he was able to alert 15 of the 18 team members, which allowed them to escape the building, saving
their lives. The Navy and Marine Corps Medal, signed by General James F. Amos, Commandant of the Marine Corps on behalf of the President of The United States was presented to Lance Corporal Creasey by a Major General, during a ceremony on Friday, September 21, 2012 at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, in the presence of his wife, Jamie Hunter Creasey, also of Goochland. It’s a cause for celebration when a house of worship reaches its 100th anniversary, and Ragland Memorial Baptist Church will commemorate that milestone on Sunday, October 7 during its centennial celebration service. The church, which is located in Sandy Hook, is inviting past and present members and the public alike to participate in the momentous occasion. Shirley Burton, the centennial committee chairperson, has been a member of the church since 1946, and she has seen its congregation grow since that time. Although its congregation has swelled to its current membership of 225 members and had 20 pastors, Ragland Memorial Baptist Church started from humble beginnings. When the church was organized a century ago by its original pastor and namesake, Rev. Hugh Davis Ragland, and its 21 charter members, the population held services inside the community school house. “The church was organized in 1912 by Rev. “I am the first and only brewery in Goochland County, said owner Trae Cairns last week as he waited to open his tasting room to customers lining up outside his door for the four o’clock opening time. Cairns, 45, who describes himself as basically a selftaught former home brewer, opened his brewery in Rockville in May. The Henrico native said new laws allow breweries to sell by the glass without food, which is what he does in the tasting room. “I was a home brewer who decided to live the dream, said Cairns, who now has his beer on tap at several local restaurants. Ragland continued from > page 3 followers who saw the need to have a Baptist church in the Sandy Hook community,” Burton said. “There was no church in Sandy Hook at that time, and the first services were held in the public school house where he preached every Sunday afternoon until the church was built.” Burton said that the church does not currently have a regular pastor, but guest pastor Dr. Doyle Chauncey will preach the sermon during Sunday’s service. Chauncey is a past president of the Southern Baptist Conservatives of Virginia, and the church is a member of that organization. “I know that he tells me that his sermon is going to be more geared toward the future of the church,” Burton said. “It’s about how we’ll continue in the future and about looking forward.” Four of the church’s former pastors, Rev. Ed Rodriguez, Rev. Howard A. Baldwin, Rev. John Penny and Rev. Kenneth Lambert, will speak during Sunday’s service. There will also be a homecoming lunch reception after the service. “At that time, we will also have a cake-cutting,” Burton said. “One interesting thing with the centennial cake is that we have a small model of the (original) church building, and it will be the topper for the cake.” The centennial committee has prepared a pamphlet for the occasion that recounts Ragland Baptist Church’s storied history. Burton said that the booklet will be available for all current church members and any guests who request a copy after Sunday’s service. “We are compiling a history of the church, and the charter members’ names will be listed in it,” Burton said. “We have written over 100 pages, so it will be a history book, and it will also list all of the former pastors.” A video presentation that
includes photographs that date back to the church’s early days will also be exhibited during the reception. In any event, bringing in members to maintain their populations is one of the challenges that many churches face today. But, according to Burton, Ragland Memorial Baptist Church has continued to attract younger members throughout its existence. Burton said that the current youth pastor, Chris Robbins, is active with the congregation’s younger members and that he leads a home renovation ministry to assist elderly and disabled people with home repairs. Additionally, the church has added other ministries aimed at children, men and women in past years. “Very few of the early members are still left,” Burton said. “But, now, our church profile is that we’re reaching out and finding young couples who have children, and we also have a very active youth and children’s program.” Nevertheless, when asked why she believes that Ragland Memorial Baptist Church has survived and thrived for so long, Burton said that it’s because the church has been faithful in bringing people to God. “I think it’s because we believe in preaching the word of God, and we’ve had sound preaching and reached out to lost people and ministered in the community,” Burton said. “It’s a very friendly, loving church, and we pray to our members and minister to them when they’re sick or in need.” The Centennial Celebration Service will happen at Ragland Memorial Baptist Church at 2838 Sandy Hook Road in Sandy Hook at 10 a.m. on Sunday, October 7. For more information, please call Ragland Memorial Baptist Church at (804) 556-4500 or visit the church’s website at http://www.raglandbaptist. org/.

Raiders from the past Goochland’s 4th and 5th graders got a real treat Friday when they gathered near Randolph Elementary School to see live demonstrations by some of the 100 or so re-enactors involved in the impressive recreation of Col. Eric Dahlgren’s daring 1864 cavalry raid on Richmond. Organized by the Goochland Historical Society, the three-day re-enactment was a great success, culminating in a “battle” staged at Tuckahoe Plantation Sunday afternoon. Over the last several decades, I’ve had the good fortune to see many Civil War re-enactments, acting as a photographer or writer or sometimes both. The images I photographed and the live demonstrations Goochland students saw last week help bring home the reality of what was the United States’ most costly conflict, in which more than 600,000 soldiers died -more than in all other conflicts the nation has endured combined. This may surprise some. But as a youngster, one of the books I read several times was Bruce Catton’s “A Stillness at Appomattox,” which had a special significance for me since we had relatives who lived not far from that location where Gen. Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia to the relentless Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, the first Union general to realize that the only way to win the war was to grind down the power of the South to resist. Grind he did. I remember author Catton’s description of the terrible Battle of Cold Harbor in Hanover County in the same year of Dahlgren’s raid. In that battle, according to Catton, more than 6,000 Union soldiers died in about one half hour -- which not quite equals the number of dead that the nation has suffered in the entire 11-year War on Terror that we see hopefully winding down today. But such losses did not deter Grant, who campaigned on to victory the following year. Perhaps the magnitude of the destruction of life and property between 1861 to 1865 is why historian Paul Johnson, in his excellent one volume history of the country, describes the Civil War as “the central event in American history.” It’s certainly why, as I was growing up, that so many folks in rural areas with roots going back for generations, when referring to “The War,” weren’t talking about the recently ended war to defeat Germany and Japan, but about the war that ravaged Virginia and the South while transforming the country into a different nation. Given the conflicts between North and South, both over slavery and their differing concepts of what it meant to be a nation, perhaps the war had to happen. But it was a national tragedy the likes of which one hopes we shall never see again. -Ken Odor

Don’t allow sporting clays in neighborhood My wife and I moved to Goochland County 10 years ago. We came from another rural Virginia county where we owned a 190 acre farm. We allowed our neighbors to hunt deer, rabbit and turkey on our land. I own a rifle, a shotgun and two handguns. I am a strong proponent of individual liberty and property rights, as long as those liberties
and rights do not adversely affect my very same liberties and rights. I think the repetitive noise a commercial sporting clays range at Orapax would bring to the surrounding area would keep my wife and me from enjoying our property and could ruin the relative peace and quiet we now enjoy. Furthermore, the range could possibly devalue our property. When my wife and I moved from the suburbs to the country 20 years ago we knew perfectly well that our neighbors would shoot firearms year round and hunt during the different seasee Letter> page 7

We accepted this, knowing we could very well be doing the same, but also understanding the noise generated by these activities would be sporadic, not repetitive from dawn to dusk such as the noise a commercially operated shooting range would produce. Repetitive noise, even at low decibel levels, can be extremely annoying. For example, a barking dog is not an unusual occurrence out here in the country, but a dog that barks from dawn to dusk can certainly drive one to distraction. The Goochland County Assessor has already devalued properties on Lee Road because of their proximity to the State Police shooting range in eastern Goochland. Three properties adjacent to Orapax have also been devalued due to the existing hunting preserve operation. who explained that a presentation on school grounds was out because no weapons could be present. Mize took time to tell the more than 400 students about period weapons and cavalry tactics, with the help of re-enactors from the group of more than 100 who retraced the route of Union Col. Eric Dahlgren’s 1864 raid on Richmond. Dahlgren’s mission was to free Union prisoners of war and, according to documents found on his body after he was killed, also to capture or kill Confederate President Jefferson Davis. But Friday afternoon the emphasis was horse soldiers and the equipment and tactics they used, starting with the horse. “The horse doesn’t want to go where we want him to go,” explained Mize, who showed the students examples of carbines, pistols and sabers used by the Union cavalry. Dr. Bruce Ventner, who was instrumental in putting the event together, accompanied the 30 or so riders to the demonstration. Ventner said putting the Dahlgren’s Raid re-enactment, which culminated with a mock battle at Tuckahoe Plantation Sunday afternoon, took more than a year to prepare. He praised county officials for their help. “When Sheriff Agnew said he could handle it I knew it was going to be a great reenactment,” said Ventner. Local students weren’t the only ones thrilled by the spectacle. Bill Fuzia of Oregon called the event “a once in a lifetime opportunity.” A re-enactor for 20 years, Fuzia said this one was special. “To do things where they

Deep Run Hunt Club marks its 125th anniversary By Karin Kapsidelis Of the Richmond TimesDispatch
At 73 and a foxhunter for 61 of those years, Angelene Pell rides an off-the-track thoroughbred when she joins the chase with the Deep Run Hunt Club. Her retired racehorse named Elliot has a smooth stride and “can gallop faster so I can keep up with everyone,” joked Pell, who rode with the hounds 65 times last season. Pell was at Deep Run on Sunday to celebrate the longevity of the club where she has ridden for the past decade. Deep Run marked its 125th anniversary with an awards presentation by national and international representatives of foxhunting associations, who spoke to the group of a tradition under pressure from both suburban encroachment and animal-rights activism. Foxhunting is “a whole way of life that is fabulous,” said Pell, who teaches history at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College. It’s also “a sport you can do forever. The trick to doing it is not to stop.” Pell sees the pursuit she took up as a 12-year-old in New Jersey
as promoting “the importance of understanding animals in the wild and why they need a habitat.” “Foxhunters don’t go around killing things,” she said, but they protect life by preserving land. Pell spoke of her years riding as she watched the presentation of about 30 hounds — or a 15 couple, in foxhunting terminology — behind the clubhouse in Manakin-Sabot for the benefit of the visiting dignitaries. In Virginia, foxhunters have mostly ridden under the radar of the kind of protests that resulted in a ban in Great Britain. That’s because in this country, killing the fox is not the goal, said Ron Payne, president of the Deep Run Hunt Club, one of 27 recognized clubs in Virginia and 153 in the nation. “In America and at Deep Run, we love the fox,” Payne said. “The hounds chase the fox. The riders chase the hounds, and the fox is much smarter than the hounds.” He said the chase ends when the fox eludes the hounds and reaches its hole, or “goes to ground.” “It’s all about the chase and not the kill,” Payne said. “We want to chase him another day.” But the club’s history, which is
detailed in a new book released Sunday to mark the anniversary, illustrates the pressure encroachment has put on foxhunting. “For the Love of the Sport — The Horses, Hounds, Foxes and Friends of the Deep Run Hunt Club,” by Aynsley Miller Fisher, traces the club’s moves since its founding in 1887 on the Deep Run Turnpike, now Broad Street. At times the club was based near Laburnum Avenue and Hermitage Road in Ginter Park and near the Country Club of Virginia at Three Chopt and River Road. “We’ve moved as Richmond has moved and pushed us west,” Payne said. Because there’s no way to know where the fox might run, he said, access to about 500 acres is required for a hunt, which may draw a half-dozen riders “on a cold rainy weekday” or more than 100 on a sunny day. In 1932, the club purchased land in Goochland County, where the clubhouse is located, but most of the hunts now take place in Cumberland and Fluvanna counties. “We’re challenged by suburbia,” Payne said.

The Goochland Family YMCA is helping local youth remain active and healthy this fall season. Beginning in October, the Goochland Y will hold lacrosse skills and drills clinics. The clinics will run trough Oct. 25 every Tuesday and Thursday from 4 – 5:30 p.m. The clinics will primarily focus on the individual player and their skill development and work on basic lacrosse skills such as cradling,
scooping, passing and shooting. All experience levels are welcome. “The Y is dedicated to supporting healthy living in our community. We want to provide local youth a safe place to go and have fun, but also teach them about the importance of being active and fit,” said Jason Funkhouser, teen and youth sports director of the Goochland Family YMCA. Funkhouser said the Goochland Y hopes to start a
lacrosse team in the spring of 2013. The clinic is open to children enrolled in Kindergarten – 5th grade. The girl’s league ranges in two age groups: K-2nd grade and 3rd – 5th grade. The boy’s league ranges in three age groups: K – 1st grade; 2nd – 3rd grade and 4th – 5th grade. October 4, 2012 Honigman Rhoda L. Honigman, 76, of Oilville, Virginia, passed away on Monday, July 23, 2012, after a brief and courageous standoff with cancer. She was born on January 14, 1936, in Bronx New York, New York, to Elkano Honigman and Ann Klein. She was a graduate of Hunter College High School in New York City where she followed a college preparatory science curriculum which led to a BS in Physics from Queens College where she graduated in 1957. Employed as an engineer with the General Electric Company’s Heavy Military Electronics Department (in New York and Daytona Beach, FL), she took several technical graduate courses at Syracuse University under the department’s Tuition Refund program and later became the first woman to graduate from GE’s three-year advanced engineering studies program that equals approximately the same requirements as a Ph.D. At GE, her work was concentrated on Ballistic Missile Trajectory analysis. While working in Florida, she received her FAA Commercial pilot’s license. From GE, Rhoda moved on to become a systems engineer in the Transportation Research Department at Airborne Instruments Laboratories in Farmingdale, NY. She developed criteria for revising the airspace system in the East with respect to future types and numbers of users, identifying and analyzing factors affecting system efficiency and safety. Her work at Airborne led her to a career as an Operations Analysis Engineer at Reeves Instrument Company in Garden City, NY. Her investigations and mathematical analyses were in the area of air traffic
safety for the aviation industry and the military. Leaving her engineering career behind at a time when equal pay for equal work was still hanging in the balance, she retired to Virginia and became a CPA, continuing to use her analytical talents and numbercrunching genius as owner of Rhoda’s Tax & Accounting Service in Manakin-Sabot, VA. As a philanthropist, her contributions in the political and nonprofit arenas were focused on issues of women’s rights. She was a strong advocate for a woman’s right and need to vote with contributions to Emily’s List, and as an activist she was involved in the Richmond Chapter of the National Organization for Women (NOW). She also spread her wings as a published author, being involved in the RichWriters writer’s group and Richmond Chapter of the Virginia Writers Club. To satisfy her intellect, she was also a member of the Richmond Reason and Naturalism Association and Richmond Area Free Thinkers. Rhoda will be remembered for her wit and smiles, and softspoken voice of the feminist conscience. She never boasted of her career accomplishments or rambled on about injustices for women in the workplace or publishing field. She took silent but direct steps to try and right some wrongs and, as she did in the end, fought a quiet battle with hope for something better. It was Rhoda’s final wish to support the mission of NARAL Pro-Choice America, thus contributions in Rhoda’s memory may be made to NARAL Pro-Choice America, 1156 15th Street, NW Suite 700. Washington, DC 20005.

The two candidates offered opposing view on the impending fiscal cliff the nation faces at the end of this year. “This is about Congress and the man standing to my left who

decided to kick the can down the road,” Powell said. “When I hear fiscal cliff, I see Eric as a person who is dysfunctional, who will not sit down and cooperate with the President.” Cantor said America has the highest corporate tax rate in the world, and said he would work to close loopholes in the tax system to raise revenues. “Let me start with the premise that a tax increase is the last thing that our country needs right now,” Cantor said. “I also think that the fiscal cliff has a lot to do with spending.” The impending mandatory cuts to the federal budget, known as sequestration, were approved by Congress last year, and Powell was quick to point out that Cantor voted for the measures. “ The reason why sequestration is in place is because the president would not agree to the kind of spending cuts Mr. Powell says he’s for,” Cantor said.
If reelected, Cantor said he would fight to remove those mandatory cuts from the defense budget, which he says would leave the nation in dire straits. “We will have the smallest ground force since 1940,” he said. The two also disagreed on new regulations for the coal industry. Cantor supports coalfired power plants, while Powell favored non-fossil solutions to the nation’s mounting energy demands. Powell said some cuts in defense can and should be made. The defense budget is bloated by anybody’s standard,” he said.” To say we need to keep the defense budget at its current level is just plain ludicrous,” Powell added. Powell attacked Cantor on his corporate donations, his extended vacations and not being responsive to 7th District citizens. He also was highly critical of Cantor for his lack on involvement in veteran’s issues. Goochland Democratic Party chair Molly Payne agreed with Powell. “Mr. Powell took Mr. Cantor to task tonight for neglecting our veterans, the people of

the 7th District, and all average Americans, in favor of big industry and those least in need of a leg up,” Payne said following the debate. Cantor objected to Powell’s personal attacks several times, and continually attempted to return the debate to a discussion on the economy, jobs and lower taxes. “You can go on with your personal attacks, but, again, it’s not going to create a job and it’s not going to bring down the deficit,” Cantor said. Powell said his accusations were not a personal attack, but an attempt to allow voters of the 7th District to obtain a clear view of their elected representative. “I’m not attacking you. I’m describing you. And it’s a very difficult process,” Powell said. Manuel Alvarez, a member of the Goochland Board of Supervisors, also attended the event, but had a different take on the outcome than did Payne. “I feel like Mr. Powell came across as angry. He didn’t really talk about a lot of issues, but just did a lot of attacking,” Alvarez said. While the Powell campaign has stated a desire for more debates, the Cantor campaign has indicated this is Cantor’s last stop on the debate trail. The 7th District hasn’t elected a Democrat in more than 40 years in a congressional district that represents portions of Henrico, Chesterfield, Hanover, Spotsylvania, Goochland, Richmond, and Orange. Youth served in Bulldogs 29-0 win over Barons By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent
Sometimes, a young football team can be a coach’s curse and inexperience often equates to failed opportunities. But youth was served well in Goochland on Friday night when a 29-0 victory over Bluestone (1-4, 0-2 James River District) was highlighted by the debut of several sophomores and freshmen. Freshman Reid Chenault got his first start at quarterback against the Barons, and he took full advantage of the opportunity. “It was a little nerve racking at first,” he said. “It got more comfortable in the second half and the offensive line stepped up and gave me the time to throw the ball.” Utilizing Chenault under center was more of a necessity than a choice for Fowler, whose offense is still a work in progress. Sophomore Jordan Jefferson has handled most of the snaps this season, but Fowler wanted to free him up to do what he does best, run, catch passes and play defense. “Jordan is the most electric athlete we have this year, and

we were looking for ways to get the ball in to his hands,” Fowler said. “We’re moving him around from receiver to running back to quarterback to try to get the ball to him in space.” He did a good amount of all
three in the Bulldogs win, racking up 71 yards on the ground and 65 receiving yards. Senior running back/defensive back Mason Engel scored a pair of touchdowns for the Bulldogs as he piled up over 100
yards rushing. The first quarter provided a set of fourth down plays that didn’t work well for the Bulldogs (3-2, 2-0). On their first drive, the Bulldogs turned the ball over
on downs. Later in the period, Connor Saunders came up inches short on a fourth and goal. “We came out a little slow tonight, and had some dropped passes and other mistakes in the first quarter,” said Bulldog coach Joe Fowler. After a scoreless first quarter, Engel set the Bulldogs up deep in Baron territory with a 54yard gallop. He scored on the ensuing play from four-yards out, giving the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead. Goochland struck pay dirt again late in the second quarter when Engel grabbed a Chenault pass from 17-yards out, making it 13-0. The Bulldogs didn’t let off the gas after intermission. Early in the third quarter Saunders scored from six-yards out to make it 19-0. Chenault found Jordan Jefferson on a wide receiver screen that covered 44 yards, and gave the Bulldogs another shot at the end zone. They took advantage when David Dyer rumbled 25 yards giving the Bulldogs a 26-0 lead. He wasn’t the only under-
classman who contributed to the homecoming win and the Bulldogs’ second JRD win. Sophomore Ricky Gordon, seeing his first varsity action, added the final three points on a 29-yard field goal. Fowler said the infusion of youth will play a key role in the Bulldogs future success and he was pleased with their performances against Bluestone. “We had one freshmen on kickoff team (Markell Cooley), and we had a big long run by a freshman (Deric Clarke). Reid threw the ball well, and we had a freshman making plays on the defensive line (Akai Timberlake),” Fowler said. “We’re going to need results among these young guys.” Goochland’s Nathan Mattox had six tackles and Scott Pearce had five tackles for the Bulldogs This Friday Goochland hosts Nottoway in a JRD contest at 7 p.m. Bluestone.................. 0 0 0 0 — 0 Goochland................ 0 13 13 3 — 29 G — Engel 3 run (Marria kick) G — Engel 17 pass from Chenault (kick failed) G — Saunders 6 run (run failed) G — Dyer 25 run (Marria kick) G — FG Gordon 30
Corey carries Cadets past St. Christopher’s 38-15 By Thomas C. Dozier Special Correspondent
The seniors on the Benedictine football roster, 15 in all, had not won a homecoming game during their tenure at the catholic military school. So seniors Corey Downey and J.D. Shobe went about correcting the situation. Downey rushed for a careerhigh 164 yards on 26 carries and recorded three touchdowns as Benedictine held off visiting St. Christopher’s 3518 at Bobby Ross Stadium on Saturday in front of a crowd of 3,500.
The game was clearly won in the trenches, and that pleased Benedictine fourthyear coach Greg Lilly. “We gave up more than 200 yards on the ground against Collegiate,” Lilly explained. “And we decided we would not talk about that game, but we were getting beat on those zone runs where the runner cuts back, and today we were determined to not allow that to happen. They were not going to beat us on the ground, even if we had to put eights guys up front, and the defense did a great job of stopping them.” With that stinginess in place, the Cadets relied on
the efficiency of quarterback Bryce Hamilton, the durability of Downey and the play-making ability of freshman Scott Bracey and J.D. Shobe to defeat their crosstown rival. Downey, a 6-0, 172-pounder, was most effective in the second half following fullback Mikey McDonald. “It all starts with the offensive line,” said Downey, who tallied 114 second-half yards. “They give us the push up front and then I just follow the fullback through the hole. I follow his lead and when he goes for the linebacker I make my cut.” The two teams played a
four-overtime thriller last year in a game won by Benedictine 48-45. Benedictine (4-1) dominated the first half but only came away with one score, a 1-yard plunge by Downey. Buddy Felch added the point-after attempt, his first of five, to give the home team a 7-0 lead. The high levels of intensity, precision ball control, and passing that the players exhibit under the leadership of head coaches Karen Doxey (Collegiate) and Don Warner (St. Catherine’s) are something to behold. “I think the two teams have a core of skillful hockey players that are able to find teammates and raise the level of play around them as well, for both teams,” Warner said. “Just simply put, some good hockey players on this field.” In their first head-to-head matchup of the season, the Saints (4-2-1) were thrilled to take victory at Robins Campus in the hard-fought 1-0 battle, breaking a Cougars’ 7-0 season winning streak in the process. There was no doubting the intensity of this matchup. Over the course of the game, a total of 72 fouls were called on both teams, 41 belonging to the Cougars. The combination that led to the Saints’ single goal came with 12 minutes remaining, when Warner gave an audible cue to senior Chloe Thompson. “Warner definitely helped me,” Thompson said. “He told me to look up and see where to hit, and I just had the right touch.” Thompson played the ball in to junior forward, Ida Farinholt. “I just knew that I just had to get it off fast and not direct at (Cougar goalie Brewer) Campbell, just to the side,” Farinholt said. “I knew that Sasha (Walmsley) was there, so she would tip it in.” Farinholt touched it to Walmsley who finished the play.

In an intense rivalry matchup, St. Catherine’s Emma MacLeod battles Collegiate’s Ana Yoo for control of the ball. The Saints came away with a hard fought 1-0 win over the Cougars.
Walmsley was still glowing after the game ended. “It was great,” she said. “Ida’s pass was amazing; and the pass from Chloe. It just worked out perfectly. I hit it in on my reverse stick. I had it in on the post where Warner’s been telling me to be the whole season. My whole team’s been telling me to be there the whole sea-
Cadets continued from >page 15 and Austin Hague clamped down and held them scoreless. The Cadets outgained the Saints 112-41 yards in the first half. The two teams traded exciting kickoff returns in the second half. The first by Shobe, who returned the opening kickoff 76 yards for the Cadets while Cole Carns added an 80-yard kickoff return for a touchdown for St. Christopher’s (3-2). Thompson tossed for 232 yards in the second half and
son. I made it there and I just had my stick in position and it ricocheted off and just went in the goal.” Equalizing the forces on the field were the GKs. Cougars sophomore Campbell Brewer came up with six saves for the day while junior Hallie Reichel made seven for the Saints. According to Doxey, the
Cougars just weren’t quite finding their rhythm. “I don’t think we played our best, for sure,” she said. “I felt like we were disconnected; I think nerves got to them. I’ve got some young ones (middies and forwards freshmen, Carson Pinney and Catherine DeVoe). That’s their first time playing St. Cats. We’ll get better.”
allowed St. Christopher’s pulled to within three points (21-18) but that would be as close as they would get. Thomas Cottrell drilled a 36-yard field goal for the Saints while Bracey and Downey closed out the scoring for the Cadets. This Saturday at 4:30, the Cadets host Paul VI in an important VIS matchup.

Collegiate junior defender, Dodi Allocca played an outstanding game, coming up with a defensive save in the process. “Dodi was probably the player of the game defensively,” said Doxey. “She had a lot of stops; and did a lot of smart things. She was probably one of the best players; but it is not surprising to me though. “(Senior forward) Liza Carter played really smart,” continued Doxey. She had a smart game. She tries to be in the right place; she puts pressure on; she’s there directing others that are sort of a little out of it. She did a good job.” With 13 shots on goal to the Cougars’ seven; and 11 corners to Collegiate’s three, one might have expected the outcome to have been less tight but the rivalry and conditions may have contributed to the lower score. “I think a little bit is coming off of grass, not on the field turf,” Warner said. “A little bit is the pressure and excitement of a game this important, with our corner team having no true experience prior to this year. It’s one thing to stay on the sideline and watch the team last year pull the corners
off. Now they’re in it. Two of our games were cancelled due to the weather and officiating, so we’ve only played six games. You figure in the six games, half of the games we’ve played have not been as dramatic or immediately impactful, so these are the environments you grow in.” Ever looking for improvement, Doxey feels the Cougars’ still have their work cut out for them despite suffering only their first loss of the season. “We have a lot to work on, especially technically,” she said. “This is a game where all the little things really matter. You don’t do that one (she indicates with an arm swing) where your stick’s tilted backward and pops up in the air. All that time you don’t have control of the ball, and the person’s not free anymore. That, and knowing where your teammates are probably are the two major things you gotta worry about.” St. Catherine’s...................... 0 1 — 1 Collegiate............................. 0 0 — 0 StC: Walmsley Assists: Farinholt Saves: Reichel (StC) 7; Brewer (C) 6 Records: St. Catherine’s 5-2-1, 1-0 LIS; Collegiate 7-1, 1-1
