Cantor, Powell make stops in Goochland By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

Two candidates in a race that has drawn national attention touched down in Goochland last week, as both candidates in the 7th Congressional Distirct visited the county. House of Representatives Majority Leader, Eric Cantor (R), stopped in at the Goochland Fall

Festival Saturday afternoon. On Wednesday, his Democrat opponent Wayne Powell stopped at the White Hawk Music Cafe, accompanied by bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. About 60 people crowded into the cafe, some admitting they came mainly for the music. see Candidates > page 4

The undead are coming to GHS By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

Vampire movies and TV shows seem all the rage these days and if you haven’t yet got your fill of the undead then you are in luck - The Goochland High School Players will perform an original adaptation of the classic horror story “Dracula” this weekend. Written by Jean Weller, whose daughter Anna Montaperto is the assistant director, the play is couched in

the popular “steam punk” culture, she said. “What makes our production of Dracula so unique is that the text is an original adaptation. Under the pen name Lady Amelia Montwell-Montgomerie, the author’s intent was to create a Dracula story that embraces the steam punk culture,” writes Drama teacher and director Neil Burch on his blog. Thumbs up or down on eminent domain question? Voters have a choice Nov. 6 By Emily Darell Richmond Suburban News

Eminent domain – the seizing of private land by a government for public use, with compensation to the landowner – is an area of government and law that even lawyers and politicians will say is often complex, generally complicated, and always controversial. On Tuesday, Nov. 6, Virginians will get the chance to vote on an amendment to the state constitution that will make changes to the eminent domain law. Virginia, like many other states, was spurred to review its eminent domain legislation in 2005, when a U.S. Supreme Court decision – Kelo v. City of New London – made national headlines. In the case, a homeowner named Susanne Kelo sued her Connecticut city – a city that had been in economic decline for decades – after it seized her home to make way for a Pfizer chemical plant on the grounds that the plant would stimulate the local economy and provide jobs, thus serving the greater good. Ultimately, the Pfizer project fell through, with Kelo and her neighbors having been forced from their homes for nothing, and the Supreme Court’s decision was widely unpopular with both liberals and conservatives, being viewed as a gross abuse of governmental power. In 2007, Virginia passed a law to ensure that what happened to Kelo would not happen to any of its own citizens.

The definition of “public use was more narrowly defined than it previously had been, and it was declared that “property can only be taken when the public interest dominates the private gain and the primary purpose is not private financial gain, private benefit, an increase in tax base or revenues, or an increase in employment with the exception of utilities and railroads. Still, many state legislators – Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli and Del. Robert Bell, R-Albemarle, chief among them – said this bill did not go far enough. They brought the constitutional amendment to the Virginia General Assembly where it passed with flying colors in the House (83-14) and more narrowly in the Senate (22-16), with the majority of “nays coming from Democrats. Public approval is the last step needed for the amendment to officially be added to the state constitution. Bell, a co-sponsor, said the amendment is simply a way of strengthening personal property rights. On his website, Bell said the bill will “place private property protections in the Virginia State Constitution. These rights would include many of those in the 2007 law, and would additionally require that the government adequately compensate the property owner. At a news conference held in Norfolk in September, Cuccinelli said: “A property rights amendment to Virginia’s constitution is the ultimate protection Virginians need, and voters will finally have a property rights amendment to vote on in the November ballot. Hopefully, then – finally

– we can put this dreaded and abominable era of government taking private property from one landowner and giving it to another behind us. The Virginia Farm Bureau has endorsed, while the Virginia Municipal League (VML), a nonprofit association for city, town and county governments, originally opposed the amendment and lobbied to have some of its language changed. According to Mark Flynn, VML’s director of legal services, his organization no longer has a stance on the amendment. It’s not so much, he said, that their thoughts on its content have changed; it’s more that they feel the amendment’s passage is inevitable. He said he believes the amendment will have an 80 percent pass rate. Flynn also said the amendment is far more complex than it first appears and believes that its passage could be lead to a deluge of unintended consequences. He said he also believes that the wording on the ballot, which does not contain the full text of the amendment, is deceptively simple. “It’s like asking, Flynn said in a telephone interview, “ ’Should the constitution of Virginia be amended in favor of mom and pop and apple pie or in favor of communism?’

Goochland man sentenced on child pornography charges By Ben Orcutt Special Correspondent

A Goochland man will serve two years in prison after pleading guilty in Goochland County Circuit Court to eight felony counts of possession of child pornography. Paul Everett McKinney, 44, of the 3200 block of River Road West, was originally charged with 17 counts of felonious distribution of child pornography. McKinney later pleaded guilty to eight felony counts of possession of child pornography and was sentenced last week by Judge Timothy K. Sanner. “The court does not find these cases easy,” Sanner said before imposing sentence on McKinney. It is difficult in such cases to determine a just sentence, Sanner said, adding that the challenge for the court is to impose a sentence that fits the crime and also is a deterrent to similar offenses. By possessing child pornography on his computer and sharing it with others, McKinney played a part in the ongoing “victimization of the child,” Sanner said. Sanner sentenced McKinney to three years in prison on the charge of possession of child pornography, first offense, with two years suspended. He sentenced McKinney to three years in prison with two years suspended on one of the possession of child pornography charges, second or subsequent offense, and sentenced McKinney to three years in prison on the remaining six charges with all time suspended. Sanner ordered that McKinney undergo a sex offender evaluation and that he register as a sex offender. McKinney also must make restitution of $100 to each child in each of the eight pornographic images he possessed, Sanner said. McKinney will be placed

on supervised probation upon release, Sanner said. Also, Sanner ordered that McKinney is prohibited from loitering within 100 feet of schools, day care centers and athletic facilities. McKinney was represented at sentencing by Richmond attorney Donald A. Denton. Denton called McKinney’s wife, Brenda McKinney, to testify on her husband’s behalf. Mrs. McKinney, 42, said the couple have two children, ages 5 and 14. Following his arrest, her husband lost his job, she said. “It’s tight,” a tearful Mrs. McKinney said. “Everything is behind.” Assistant Attorney General Thomas K. Johnstone IV told the court that McKinney admitted his crimes and was contrite. Johnstone asked for a sentence at or near the low end of the state sentencing guidelines, which ranged from three years and one month in prison to nine years and 11 months. Denton noted that the sentencing guidelines for McKinney’s crimes recommended more punishment than some “hands-on” offenses of sexual abuse. “I don’t understand the logic of it,” Denton said, adding that the actual abuse of the children occurred before McKinney possessed the images, which Denton said McKinney obtained free of charge. Denton asked the court to sentence McKinney below the guidelines. Despite not having a prior criminal record, Denton said it will be difficult for McKinney to obtain employment due to the nature of the offenses he committed. “He knows he did wrong,” Denton said. Johnstone countered that not only did the victims in the images McKinney possessed have to endure the actual abuse,

but that by possessing the pornography, McKinney was “taking it into perpetuity.” The High-Tech Crimes Division of the state police began its investigation of McKinney in March 2011, and determined from forensic examination of his computer that McKinney was receiving and sharing child pornography from his home. According to the state police, the Northern VirginiaDC Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) assisted in the investigation. Online court records indicate that McKinney was arrested on March 21, and that the crimes to which he pleaded guilty occurred on Dec. 10, 2010, and April 14, 2011. Had Sanner gone beyond the sentencing guidelines, McKinney’s punishment could have been much worse. Followingsentencing,Johnstone said that state code allows for incarceration from one to five years in prison for possession of child pornography, first offense, and one to 10 years for second or subsequent offense. However, Johnstone said he was satisfied with the sentence Sanner imposed and that it sends the appropriate message to help deter such crimes. Denton agreed. “It’s a fair sentence,” Denton said. “He’s a good guy. He just made a mistake.”

Powell said although he has received no money from the Democratic establishment, he’s raised $800,000 for his campaign and planned a final a final TV ad focusing on women’s issues. “If women vote their own best interests I’ve already won,” said Powell. Cantor, appearing at the Goochland Fall Festival Saturday afternoon, said Powell favored raising taxes and more government regulation. “I am for cutting taxes and rolling back regulations and cutting red tape on small businesses to save jobs,” said Cantor. He also said he supported repealing Obamacare. “All that Mr. Powell does is allege mischaracterizations of me - he attacks my family - he doesn’t offer anything constructive,” said Cantor of Powell’s campaign. Democratic political consultant David “Mudcat” Saunders said Powell was running a “bluegrassroots” campaign after the music and politics was all over. He accused Republicans of being all for small government except when it comes to women’s issues and said Powell’s campaign “will be right out in the district,” while accusing Cantor of never holding a town hall meeting.

How do you know if you may soon be among the undead? Well, if you awaken in the middle of the night as Lucy (played by Carrie Bullard) has in the photo above and see Dracula (played by Ryan Stanley) leaning over you, it could be you’re about to join a new demographic group.

Weather worries By the time this issue hits the streets they’re likely to be slick and strewn with blown down leaves and larger debris loosened up by the violent winds predicted for Sandy, one of the most unusual storms ever to approach the East Coast of the United States. For days at the end of last week almost every media outlet barraged Virginia residents with warnings to get ready. I got ready for impending calamity by doing what I always do in such cases - I got nervous! After calming down a bit I traveled up to the local pharmacy and made sure that the better half and I stocked up on all our prescriptions and then searched for batteries. Double AAs, triple AAAs and Cs were everywhere to be had. But D cells, the kind everyone puts in their flashlights, in other words the kind I needed, were nowhere to be found at my first stop. I gave up that evening and went home. Maybe Sandy would turn right anyhow and head out to sea. And anyway, I wanted to get a head start on laying out the Gazette, in case Sandy turned real mean and smashed into Virginia, killing power in our area. That’s because I always plan ahead, right? No, that’s because calmer heads and better planners passed the word - hey maybe we better try to get a head start in case the worst case scenario comes to pass. That’s why this column will leave

you with the feeling that Sandy is in the future - because it was when I wrote this on Saturday, just prior to heading out to the Goochland Fall Festival. That promised to be a fun afternoon as always, with only light rain predicted. I was also going out to see Eric Cantor (R-7th), since his campaign had sent out a press release saying he would attend the festival. Just a few days earlier, Democrat Wayne Powell, Cantor’s challenger in the district, had staged a “Cantor Where Art Thou” tour through the district, accompanied by Ralph Stanley and the Clinch Mountain Boys. That brought some mighty fine bluegrass music to Goochland last Wednesday, along with a fair dose of vitriol directed at Cantor. For more on that campaign, see our article on page 1. We’ve also included information on polling places and an article on the constitutional amendments (page 2) for our readers to consider before going to the polls. And the State Board of Elections has an entire page (8) devoted to the amendments for your further edification. Now to head out to the festival and after that I’ll continue the search for the elusive D batteries. All joking aside, we hope our readers escape injury and property damage and this issue finds everyone safe and sound. I’ll be hiding under the bed. -Ken Odor

Letters to the Editor You may take my sign but not my vote Political signs for President Obama, Tim Kaine, and Wayne Powell, have been removed from private property without permission in Goochland. Sure people might disagree with their neighbors politically, and that is okay, but it’s freedom of speech and a constitutional issue. I recommend that we don’t give in to temptation because it just causes hard feeling among friends, neighbors, or others that may feel that it is just a light prank. I assure you that is not the case. Ruth and William Quarles Gum Spring

Is race a voting factor for you? Ask yourself: If Candidate Romney were black, would you vote for him, based on his platform? If President Obama were white,

would you vote for him based on his record for the past four years? Let’s look at his record during that fouryear period: He told us not to deliver a snap judgment about a Boston police officer who arrested his Harvard professor-friend, but warned us against “jumping to conclusions” about a mass murderer at Fort Hood who shouted “Allahu Akbar.” He did not classify this as a terrorist act. He call the Christmas bomber “an isolated extremist,” only to admit later that he was part of an al Qaeda plot. He strived to close down our detention facility at Guantanamo, releasing some who have returned to battlefield against America. He instructed his Attorney General to give the perpetrator of 9/11 a civil trial, when no one else would ever consider such. He waited weeks before declaring the attack in Benghazi a terrorist attack, as he purposely misled America by attributing it to a “movie.” During his tenure, we have seen the credit-rating of the United States

reduced greatly. He has obstructed oil drilling and the operations of the coal industry. He has put America further in debt than all other American presidents combined. He has required all Americans to purchase a product from a third party. Under his watch, there has been more unemployment, more people on welfare, and more people receiving food stamps; insurance premiums have risen, food and gas prices have sky-rocketed, and college graduates cannot find work, in order to pay back their loans. He by-passed Congress and implemented the Dream Act through executive power. He stopped the deportation of illegal immigrants, some with criminal convictions. He expects our military men and women to pay for their own insurance because, in his words, they “volunteered to go to war.” He was the first President to cancel the national Day of Prayer see Letters > page 7

Orapax threatens peace and sanity Once again, the residents of Rock Castle Road, Dogtown Road, River Road West, Jackson Shop Road, Cedar Point Road and Gathright Drive are forced to again confront the specter of a commercial sporting clays range in their peaceful neighborhood and the sound of several thousand shots daily. Orapax Farm already operates a legally sanctioned shooting preserve for quail and pheasants seven days a week. The sporadic preserve shooting is part of our country heritage and to me, no more objectionable than the occasional hunting and target practice occurring year round. At this point, one just has to ask… well if the above shooting does not bother you, what is your problem with sporting clays??? You have no idea, nor would I, had I not lived through it in the late eighties when Orapax Farm operated an illegal sporting clay range, starting early in the morning, I would hear two distant shots, seven seconds later… two more shots, seven seconds later… two more shots, all day long, seven days a week. Try to imagine sitting on your porch reading and a mosquito zooms close to your ear.

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

November 1, 2012 You swat it away. Seven seconds later. it zooms back to your ear… all day long… all week long. After a few days, the mosquito dominates your thoughts. When this happens day after day, it is all you can think about. The constantly predictable, repetitive shooting of sporting clays is exactly like that. This is not a decibel issue. No one objecting to sporting clays is threatening to go deaf. It is a health issue that threatens our peace and sanity. At the last planning commission meeting, Tom Rockecharlie nailed it when he said he did not see where another decibel test on the range would accomplish anything. Commissioner Ty Querry also nailed it when he said he agreed with a former speaker that a man has a right to do what he wants on his own land, but not when he intrudes on the rights of others landowners. The landowners around Orapax Farm do not deserve to have their peace and happiness destroyed for the sake of one landowner making money. This area is simply not the right location for such and obtrusive enterprise. Fred Jenkins Goochland.

Vote yes on question one When you vote in the election, vote YES on Question One. This is a proposed constitutional amendment in Virginia , which would help to correct Eminent Domain abuse. The original purpose of Eminent Domain was for it to be used only when absolutely necessary, to take and pay a fair price for private property, to be used only for essential purposes of the common good such as building roads.

But, the rules have been stretched and it has been used for such things as building a mall, for example, which would greatly benefit financially a few involved citizens. If a majority of voters approve the measure, the Virginia Constitution will be amended effective January 1, 2013, and this will go a long way in preventing the government from confiscating private property. Sue Long North

Another Orapax opponent speaks out We are completely against any approval of a conditional use permit for the owners of Orapax to have a shooting clays or skeet range on their property. This would lower our property values, cause neighbors undue stress and discomfort and would not benefit Goochland in any way. We are in favor of property rights for owners, but not at the expense and discomfort of their neighbors. We should all be able to enjoy our own yards, but not infringe on the rights of others to do the same. We should all be considerate of our neighbors, and the Dykers have not done that in the past, and it seems do not plan to do that in the future. A conditional use permit for Orapax is no more appropriate now than it was the previous times they have applied for one. There are even more people living in the area than in the past, so we do hope you listen to what we are all saying and not to those from out of town who do not have investments in Goochland. Article I. Bill of Rights. Section 11. Due process of law; obligation of contracts; taking of private property; prohibited discrimination; jury trial in civil cases.

Ballot Question Shall Section 11 of Article I (Bill of Rights) of the Constitution of Virginia be amended (i) to require that eminent domain only be exercised where the property taken or damaged is for public use and, except for utilities or the elimination of a public nuisance, not where the primary use is for private gain, private benefit, private enterprise, increasing jobs, increasing tax revenue, or economic development; (ii) to define what is included in just compensation for such taking or damaging of property; and (iii) to prohibit the taking or damaging of more private property than is necessary for the public use?

Explanation Current Constitution and Background Article I, Section 11 of the current Constitution prohibits the taking or damaging of private property for public uses without just compensation. The power to take private property for public uses is known as the power of eminent domain. If a private property owner and the entity acquiring property for a public use cannot agree on the sale of the property, the property may be taken by eminent domain and the amount of just compensation is decided in a court proceeding. In a 2005 case from Connecticut, the United States Supreme Court upheld the taking of private property and its transfer to a private business for economic development purposes and also said that states could restrict the use of eminent domain (Kelo v. City of New London, 545 U.S. 469).-Two years later, the Virginia General Assembly enacted ยง 1-219.1 of the Code of Virginia and set limits on the use of eminent domain powers. For example, ยง 1-219.1 provides that no more private property may be taken than is necessary for the stated public use, that the public interest for the taking must outweigh any private gain, and that private property cannot be taken for certain primary purposes such as increasing the tax base, revenues, or employment. Proposed Amendment The proposed constitutional amendment continues the approach and concepts set out in ยง 1-219.1. However, while limits in the Code can be amended by any future General Assembly, the proposed amendment, if approved by the voters, could only be changed by a future constitutional amendment approved by the voters. The proposed amendment includes the following:

necessary for the stated public use. railroad exercises the power of eminent domain for public use when such exercise is for the authorized provision of of a public nuisance may be a public use. It is not a public private enterprise, increasing jobs, increasing tax revenue, or ! " #

by separate legislation that will become law if this proposed amendment is approved by the voters (Chapters 699 and 719, 2012 Acts of Assembly). $ has the burden to prove that the property is being taken for a public use. Amend Section 11 of Article I of the Constitution of Virginia as follows:

Article I. Bill of Rights Section 11. Due process of law; obligation of contracts; taking or damaging of private property; prohibited discrimination; jury trial in civil cases. That no person shall be deprived of his life, liberty, or property without due process of law; that the General Assembly

shall not pass any law impairing the obligation of contracts, nor any law whereby private property shall be taken or damaged for $ % # ; and that the right to be free from any governmental discrimination upon the basis of religious conviction, race, color, sex, or national origin shall not be abridged, except that the mere separation of the sexes shall not be considered discrimination. That in controversies respecting property, and in suits between man and man, trial by jury is preferable to any other, and ought to be held sacred. The General Assembly may limit the number of jurors for civil cases in courts of record to not less That the General Assembly shall pass no law whereby private property, the right to which is fundamental, shall be damaged or taken except for public use. No private property shall be damaged or taken for public use without just compensation to the owner thereof. No more private property may be taken than ! and lost access, and damages to the residue caused by the taking. the General Assembly. A public service company, public service corporation, or railroad exercises the power of eminent domain for public use when such exercise is for the authorized provision of utility, common carrier, or railroad services. In all other cases, a taking or damaging of private property is not for public use enterprise, increasing jobs, increasing tax revenue, or economic development, except for the elimination of a public nuisance existing on the property. The condemnor bears the burden of proving that the use is public, without a presumption that it is.

Community adoptions key to meeting county needs and through the efforts of so many, the association was able to help a record number of recipients. The need is anticipated to be even greater during the 2012 Christmas season. Goochland’s Christmas Mother program provides food, clothing, and other special gifts and support to meet the needs of each qualified family. The work of hundreds of volunteers is required to organize the donated and purchased food and supplies, shop for and wrap gifts, and deliver the items

Record number anticipated Contributed Report

Goochland’s Christmas Mother is asking for support for “adoptions” for this year’s Christmas season. Last year, the organization provided a meaningful Christmas for nearly 900 people from 328 families. Of those, 128 families, 417 people, were “adopted” by 80 different organizations, churches and families. Adoptions have become a vital part of the association’s ability to help so many in need. “It is a huge undertaking to match up so many of our families with those who want to provide for them in the name of the Christmas Mother” said Kit Davison, GCM President. “Our adoptions chair, Lisa Parrish, is working hard to make sure that every eligible family that needs support receives it. Our adoptions tripled last year and it was the generous

support from the community that enabled us to help so many more.” Many county organization and families adopted and provided for eligible families last year. Among them were Goochland’s six Fire and Rescue companies, Goochland High School and Middle School, a number of county churches, other organizations, and families. These groups gave food and gifts to their adopted families in the name of the Christmas Mother using guidelines provided. “It is a wonderful opportunity to get into the spirit of giving and bring real joy to someone in need”, said Lisa Parrish, Adoptions Committee Chair. “We need many adopting groups in order to bring Christmas to the number of families we expect to serve this year.” Providing for those in need who may not be able to enjoy the Christmas season is the goal of the Goochland Christmas Mother Association. The need was especially acute last year,

Hall is working hard to raise funds and contributions in support of the program. Individuals or organizations interested in adopting a family in need should contact the GCM Adoptions Committee at 804-556-3411.

Comeback allows Bulldogs to take JRD title in OT Big drive defined Bulldogs’ tenacity By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

On rare occasions, one drive can define a team’s season. Goochland may have experienced one of those magic moments on Friday night when it mattered most. The result gave the Bulldogs a James River District championship and home field advantage for at least the first three playoff games. Trailing Buckingham by seven points late in the final quarter, the Bulldogs converted four fourth downs to finally draw even with the visiting Knights. “It was gutsy, but we didn’t feel like we had much of a choice. We had to take a chance and I had faith in these kids,” Goochland coach Joe Fowler said. The win even produced a huge smile on his face.

The drive, lasting over nine minutes, provided an ample amount of drama for fans, players, coaches and a ninth grade backup quarterback sitting on the bench. With a critical fourth and 15 from the Knight’s 44-yard line, freshman Reid Chenault took his first snap of the night and connected with Nathan Adams for a crucial first down. “With about two minutes left, they told me to get loose because they might put me in. It definitely caught me off guard a little bit. I got to say I was very, very nervous,” Chenault said. “They called a timeout and my teammates settled me down.” During the timeout, Fowler trotted out to his offensive huddle. “I think they thought I was going to change the play,” he said. “I told them that I believe in you all; I have faith in you all, so just run the play we just called.” The drive didn’t win the

game for the Bulldogs. That would take overtime and one of the biggest defensive stops of the year. But, it did solidify the team as a solid Division II contender, something Fowler felt was more of a evolution than a revelation. “Back at the beginning of the season when our backs were against the wall, I said that in week nine or 10, we were going to be a whole lot different team than we were in week’s one, two and three, and we are,” Fowler said. Players who began the season as inexperienced underclassman buried on the depth chart have stepped up to play critical roles in this team’s success. “We started three freshmen tonight, but they didn’t play like freshmen because they’ve been starting all season long,” Fowler said. Mitchell Brice covered the final five yards of the 19-play scoring drive to knot score at 21.

Goochland quarterback Jordan Jefferson drew first blood in overtime and the Bulldogs led 28-21, but Knights’ running back Kyree Koonz quickly answered, and it was decision time for Buckingham coach Craig Gill. The veteran coach’s call was simplified by a personal foul penalty on Koonz’ score, so the ball was placed just outside the 1-yard line. Knights star running back Peanut Johnson headed for a hole that had been kind to him all night, and it appeared momentum would carry him across the line to victory. But a host of Bulldog tacklers were waiting to stop Johnson cold in his tracks. Goochland’s Akai Timberlake stripped the ball and Mason Engel recovered the fumble giving the Bulldogs the win and the JRD title. “I would have been disappointed if we had been unable to win the district

title outright,” Fowler said. A loss to Buckingham would have muddied the JRD water and the Bulldogs could have ended in a three way tie for the title. Fowler said the team is in playoff mode, and this week’s matchup at Amelia is another obstacle on that mission.

Cadets still in VISAA race despite loss to FUMA Benedictine will need to beat Liberty By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Benedictine freshman Scott Bracey (9) goes high for a catch against FUMA defender Charles Clardy (4).

All eyes were on Penn State bound Christian Hackenberg and his Fork Union teammates when they arrived at the Abbey in Goochland County for a match up with Benedictine. The traditionally heated rivalry held extra intensity with the Cadets holding a narrow edge on second place in VISAA standings. Hackenberg didn’t disappoint with a 340-yard plus performance that included three touchdowns, two of them to all conference receiver Chrystian Brown, in the

39-30 win. Br yce Hamilton, Benedictine’s junior quarterback, also showed off his more than ample arm with four touchdowns. “Bryce is a gutty kid,” Benedictine coach Greg Lilly said. “He will stand in the pocket, run it when we ask him to, and throw strikes when we ask him to.” The Cadet defense held firm for most of the first half, but Hackenberg was deadly accurate in key situations, and finally solved the defensive puzzle. Benedictine jumped to a 6-0 lead when Corey Downey gathered in a Hamilton pass from 27 yards out. The conversion failed. FUMA responded quickly

with a Hackenberg strike to Brown that covered 63 yards and gave the Blue Devils a 7-6 lead. Midway through the second quarter, Hamilton found freshman receiver Scott Bracey with a 35-yard scoring strike and after another failed PAT the Cadets held a 12-7 lead. Hackenberg proved he could do a lot with more than four minutes on the clock. He connected with wide receiver Tyrone McDade with an 8yard pass. The Blue Devils added a field goal shortly before halftime to take a 1712 lead to the intermission. In the second half, Blue Devil kicker Dylan McCormick added a 40-yard field goal before Hackenberg

found Brown again, this time for 48 yards, putting the visitors up 27-12 as the third quarter ended. It appeared Benedictine was climbing back in the contest early in the fourth period when Downey scored from five yards out, but Brian Burton quickly squashed those hopes with a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. “The kickoff was disappointing,” Lilly said. “We finally kick it deep, and they run it back at a time when I felt like we had life.” Still, the Cadets didn’t quit and Cadet wide receiver Amani Williams caught two touchdown passes in rapid see FUMA >page 17

Goochland takes JRD cross country titles By Dave Lawrence Special Correspondent

Goochland cross-country coach Henry Jones was worried about the outcome of the James River District girls’ cross-country meet last Wednesday at Pocahontas State Park. Amelia’s Brooke Trainham finished first in 21:57. Goochland’s Madison Venhuizen finished second. Morgan Venhuizen finished fourth for Goochland, Amelia’s Hailey Trainham finished fifth, and so on. Jones knew it was going to be closeand it was. By the time the meet was over, only three points separated the two teams. But to Jones’ relief, Goochland was the team in front 40-43. “Ooh, that was close,” Jones said of the girls’ victory. The Goochland boys’ team, by sweeping second- through sixth-place, handily won their meet, beating second-place Amelia by 15-70. Jones was happy with the two team titles. “I’m really happy for

FUMA

them,” said Jones. “They worked really hard all season to get to this point.” The double victory – which earned Jones girls’ and boys’ Coach of the Year honors – earned the Bulldogs a berth in the Region B cross-country meet, which was held at Panorama Farm in Charlottesville on Wednesday. In the Region B girls’ meet, Goochland will be joined by Amelia, Nottoway and Randolph-Henry. In the boys’ meet, the Bulldogs will be joined by Amelia, RandolphHenry and Bluestone. Bluestone finished in a tie for fourth in points with Nottoway, but had a faster average time among its top five runners. In addition to the top four teams, the top 15 individual runners advance to the regional meet. Amelia’s Brooke Trainham earned Girls’ Runner of the Year honor, while Matthew Horton of Cumberland, who won the boys’ race in 17:45, earned Boys’ Runner of the Year.

Amelia coach Gresham Crane said it was frustrating to get so close to victory in the girls’ meet. “I told my volunteer coach I’d rather lose by 20 points than lose by three,” Crane said. “If you look at it, it’s kind of interesting – our … average time was faster than Goochland’s average time.” The difference between the two teams was settled by

a football. “Hackenberg is really good,” he smiled. continued from >page 16 “He was everything advertised and more.” succession. points determined by the sum of the orders of the runners’ finishes. Amelia’s top five girls had first-, fifth-, eighth, 14th- and 15th-place finishes, for a total of 43 points. Goochland’s top five girls, on the other hand, had second-, fourth-, sixth-, 12th- and 16place finishes for a total of 40 points. Madison Venhuizen was somewhat frustrated by her second-place finish, coming in 1:15 after the race winner. “I felt good, but I did a lot better last year,” she said. “I feel like last year I was more prepared for the race.” Venhuizen fell behind quickly as Trainham jumped out to an early lead and built on it throughout the 5,000 meter course. “The whole time, I was thinking, ‘Oh, I’ll get her around this turn, I’ll get her this time,’ and every time I didn’t get her I was like, ‘Oh, I still got it, I’ll get her,’ ” Venhuizen said. “Then when we got to about two miles, I was like, ‘Alright, I’m not going to get her. I’ve just got to try to keep my spot right

here.’ There was no hope.” While Venhuizen was frustrated with her performance, Goochland’s Marcus Houston was not surprised by his second-place finish in the boys’ race. “I copy that I got a PR. I ran under 18 minutes,” said Houston, who finished the course in 17:57. “Even though I came in second, Matthew [Horton]’s been ahead of me for a while now, so I kind of anticipated it. I’m not enthusiastic about coming in second, but I’m content with my place.” Jones, Venhuizen and Houston all agreed that the team victory was more important than the individual honors. “It would have been nice to have a district champion,” Jones said. “I guess it’s more for the individual in that aspect, but I’m all about the team effort. So coming out on top as a team, that’s what we’re extremely excited about.”
