County in good shape to attract new businesses says Ryan

Goochland County Economic Development Director Matthew E. Ryan says the county’s economy is in good shape and the future is bright in terms of commercial development.

By Ben Orcutt Special Correspondent

Goochland is well-positioned to plan for and attract new business, according to Matthew E. Ryan, the county’s director of economic development. “Despite the economy, there’s definitely a lot of interest in Goochland,” Ryan said during a recent interview about the state of the county’s economy. Ryan, 32, said he has “hit the ground running” since coming on board at the end of April. Prior to arriving in Goochland, Ryan worked for his family’s business in South Carolina, The Ryan Group. “Most of my background is in real estate development and commercial brokerage,” he said. Goochland’s economy appears to be in good shape, Ryan

said. “There have been a few businesses that have closed,” he said, noting the closing of Nadolski’s Butcher Shop and Devil Monkey Ice Cream Parlor in the Courthouse Village Shopping Center. “Most of them have been in the retail market, which it’s tough,” Ryan added. “Certainly Goochland is not immune to the tough economic times…. I can’t really go into detail why those businesses closed. It’s not all because of the economy. Some of them have been family issues.” During his brief tenure, Ryan said he has noticed that Goochland has “great community support for the small businesses around here.” Large companies also are doing well, Ryan said. Capital One, the county’s largest private employer with roughly 5,000 employees, has invested $50 to $60 million in capital improvements to its West Creek campus at Rt. 288 and Broad Street, Ryan said. CarMax, which also is located in West Creek, and Luck Stone, are other successful large employers, Ryan added West Creek is “a great asset to the county in recruiting business,” Ryan said. “We’re in a great location and especially West Creek with 288 running right through the middle of it you have easy access to get to pretty much anywhere you want to go in a hurry.” It is inevitable, Ryan said, that commercial development will continue to move westward into Goochland from Short Pump. “I think part of our challenge is once it gets into Goochland County being able to maintain Goochland County’s character,” he said. “We certainly want commercial growth. We want it to fit into Goochland’s model. That’s what we’re working on now is kind of defining what that model might look like so that we can kind of meet it head on.” To that end, the Economic Development Authority is scheduled to meet with the Board of Supervisors on Wednesday, Dec. 5, at 6 p.m. at the Goochland Branch of the Pamunkey Regional Library at 3705 River Road West. The meeting is the first of three that will be held in advance of an economic forum scheduled for the Spring, Ryan said. The EDA also plans to meet with the Planning Commission and the School Board in advance of the forum, Ryan added. Wednesday’s agenda will include discussion of the projects he has been working on and what plans the EDA has for the see Business > page 8

Students at Goochland Middle School helped to make Thanksgiving a little brighter for some area families this year by collecting food for the Goochland Free Clinic and Family Services Food Pantry. Several members of the Student Council Association spoke about their collection efforts on the

Tuesday before Thanksgiving. “Well the posters were very fun to make and I know that the people who get the food will enjoy it,” said Sydney Meiller, who is the 6thgrade vice president on the SCA. Sam Taylor, an 8th-grader who is the secretary for the SCA, said that he and SCA representative Riley Powers made a video about the food drive that was broadcast see Food drive > page 11

Longtime Powhatan resident Ron Spears is the chief operating officer at Goochland’s Elk Hill, a residential and educational organization for at-risk children and teens. Spears was recently selected by the Central Virginia Partnership on Youth as the 2012 Outstanding Private Partner of the Year. Spears has been with Elk Hill since 1984, serving in a variety of roles, and helping the organization grow from a residential home for troubled boys, to a program that includes campuses across Virginia, preventative social services, and summer camps. Recently, he sat down with PT reporter Emily Darrell to talk a bit about community involvement, the importance of role models, and how his failure to make it to a 7 a. m. college business course impacted his future in a surprisingly positive way. Q. You’ve been with Elk Hill since 1984. How have things changed in the last nearly 30 years?

A. We have evolved. We were once a residential-only facility that served boys only and we were viewed as an alternative to corrections. The youth then were probably given a choice then by a judge whether they would go to Beaumont, for instance, to do their time or whether they would come to Elk Hill and make changes. They might be here for a year and a half to two years. Now we’re being asked to do more with less time. Because of fiscal restraints

children now we’re not asked to fix the big picture; it’s really specific issues that we’re now asked to address. We have diversified. We have three schools. Thirty years ago our children were attending Goochland public schools. Now Goochland sends students here, because we have a day program that specializes in serving at-risk students that have difficult behaviors. We actually go into school systems now and we provide behavioral support. There’s a service called therapeutic day treatment and it’s at no cost to the parent or to the school system. Q. Twenty-eight years is a long time – I’m guessing that’s most of your career. Was there a point where you made a conscious decision that this is where you wanted to stay?

A. I went to Wilberforce University, which is in Ohio and my intent was to major in business, because my grandparents over in Cumberland County had a couple of businesses. So I thought it would be a good fit for me. I had such difficulty getting to an Accounting 101 class that was held at 7 a.m. –I think it was three days a week. It was a prerequisite to everything else in business that I wanted to study. The Ohio winters were brutal and I just couldn’t get to that class. I registered for it numerous times and ended up having to drop it. The social work courses were in the afternoon and they fit perfectly – the sun was out and it was warmer then. It was almost serendipitous that this was the path for me. see Spears > page 8

Crossing over a tranquil creek and past the prestigious Bolling Hall Farm, cows and horses graze in elegant fenced-in pastures. Once you break through the thicket of cedar trees, the road opens to a little church sitting gracefully at the corner of Three Square Road and Rock Castle Road. Smyrna Baptist Church, established in 1776, is a place of worship and fellowship for the

Benedictine gets easement Envoy at the Meadows introduces medical directors for Goochland entrance From Richmond Times-Dispatch staff reports

Goochland County for approval. Formerly known as Benedictine High School, the school behind the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond has plans to move to Goochland, where its athletic facilities have been located for years. But the county in June said the curb-andgutter design in the development plan was not appropriate. Goochland County Administrator Rebecca Dickson said Monday that the county would meet with Benedictine representatives this week to discuss the new entrance plan. “If they can do shoulder and ditch that would be ideal from the county’s standpoint,” said Dickson.

An easement agreement has been reached clearing an obstacle to Benedictine College Preparatory’s move to Goochland County. The Benedictine Society of Virginia said it has signed an option agreement on a piece of property adjacent to Benedictine Abbey and River Road that would allow for construction of an entrance to the school that would be acceptable to the county. The acquisition will allow for construction of an entrance to the abbey using a “shoulder and ditch” road design consistent with many rural parts of River Road, an announcement said. The Benedictine Society said it believes the property will allow it to meet county Goochland Gazette Editor Ken Odor conrequirements for the road design and will tributed to this report. submit an updated development plan to

Buy local when you can Holiday shopping season is upon us, with merchants not even waiting for the day after Thanksgiving to launch their sales. It’s a given that the Christmas shopping season is a make or break period for many retailers and legions of business analysts will soon be poring over the Black Friday results and prognosticating at length about the prospects for good results (read, folks spending more money than they did last year, even if they don’t have it.) Here locally the Gazette decided to take the longer view, with an interview with Goochland Economic Development Director Matthew Ryan (see story on page 1). Things are generally looking up, according to Ryan, with the prospect of some announcements after the first of the year he said. But just like a recent correspondent to our Letters to the Editor section, Ryan noted the importance of supporting existing businesses while at the same time recruiting new ones. It was a shock to many of us to hear that Nadolski’s Butcher Shop had closed and the lesson to take from that event while doing your Christmas shopping this season is to heed the advice of our letter writer and look for Goochland based businesses whenever possible as places to spend your money. It just makes good sense to

spend your money close to home, supporting businesses in the county.

On the left coast Just back from visiting my son in the country’s most populous state, California, we can report that folks out there seem to be spending their money. They even voted to give some more to the state government so it can spend it for them in the form of an increase in the state sales tax and an increase in the state income tax for those making more than $250,000 yearly in an attempt to balance the budget. They had to do something, since the state was staggering under a huge deficit and Gov. Brown had threatened to make deep cuts in education spending in order to balance their budget. Not a fan of tax increases, the one thing I did find interesting was at least the measures are temporary, with the sales tax increase expiring in four years and the state income tax increases in seven. If taxes must be increased, that’s the way to do it. Let the tax increases sunset if not renewed. The federal government should do the same in their approach to solving the so-called “fiscal cliff ” crisis if any tax increases are involved. -Ken Odor

Letters to the Editor Sound study shows Orapax failed a more important test I am writing concerning your article on “Sound study Completed for Orapax CUP Application.” While it is true that Backstage said the test gunshots did not register over ambient noise on Route 6, the gunshots from Orapax actually failed a far more important sound test. During the sound test, the county had stationed six staff members in various locations including two miles away in Holland Hills. Every staff member heard the shots from Orapax and reported the findings in the county staff report. Never again can anyone claim that we will not hear the shots. The county staff has documented that we will. At full capacity the sporting clays range would generate up to 1,200 extra shots per day in addition to the current hunting shots. Our neighborhood has repeatedly said that the decibel of the shots is not the issue, but rather the number and intermittent nature of the shots. We have compared it to a dripping faucet. It does not matter how loud or soft the drip may sound, but rather the repetitive nature that is so stressful. We are thankful to the Planning Commission. They heard our plea and voted 6-1 to recommend protection for the neighborhood. They recognized that the additional profit to Orapax would in no way outweigh our loss of property values and our misery from the incessant noise of up to 1,200 shots per day. The final decision will be made by the Board of

Shooting range would be a financial negative The reason we want to attract appropriate commercial enterprise to Goochland is to lower the existing and future financial burden carried by the taxpayers. The planning commission is tasked with determining what will contribute to county coffers. Before approving commercial development, they should be assured that demonstrated gains must outweigh potential financial losses and any decision should look to enhance quality of life in Goochland. continued from > page 2 I entered this field thinking I would work with adults. When I looked back here to Virginia, I thought, “Gee, you know, Cumberland County, it’s in the center of the correctional world. I think Buckingham Correctional hadn’t even been built at that point, but Powhatan certainly had. So anyway I thought I might be not a corrections officer, but counselor. So I got a degree in sociology and a minor in vocational rehab. I went to work in Atlanta at that point, working for the Fulton County adult probation services. That’s when I realized I really didn’t enjoy working with adults. It’s not that it wasn’t rewarding, it was just depressing – because I met people had potential. But the word “potential” was now a negative word. Because they were facing 20, 30 years of prison time and they wouldn’t reach their potential. I logged that away and I returned to Cumberland to run a family business. While there I found a school up in Buckingham County called New Dominion School, a wilderness program where you lived in the woods 24 hours a

workforce,” Ryan said, as well a low tax rate and an “abundance of land.” One of the primary issues working against the county is the sagging economy, Ryan said. “It’s much tougher to get financing,” he said. “That’s a huge challenge for us.” Goochland also has limited infrastructure, such as access to utilities, Ryan said. “We don’t have a ton of inventory of pad ready sites [to build on] in this county,” he added. The trick, Ryan said, is matching specific properties with specific projects in what is now a global market. “The biggest challenge that faces me is just the competition in the market,” he said. “So we have to have the best product to put on the table moving forward to be able to be competitive.” The good news, Ryan said, is that the

www.goochlandgazette.com county has seen significant capital investment this year and the unemployment rate is below 4 percent. There are also some projects in the works that could be announced at the first of the year, he said. “I’m very optimistic about what’s in the future,” Ryan said. “So I’m hoping to kind of end this year on a good note and then jump right into 2013 with momentum moving forward.” It also is crucial, Ryan noted, to maintain a close relationship with existing businesses. “I probably spend 60 percent of my time on recruitment and 40 percent of my time on retention,” he said. “It’s important not to lose sight of the businesses we have here and you never know when one of those small businesses turns into the next Capital One. So it’s important to kind of nourish the existing business.”

day, 5 days a week. I worked there for a year. I closed up the family business and I to work – that’s when I discovered my love with working with youth. Because potential’s a positive word – they still can be something. However, I couldn’t continue to work that schedule. So I found Elk Hill. They let me go home every night. And I’ve been here ever since.

Through the years we’ve decided to go upstream, basically, to try to provide more support services before people get so far downstream. If you look at there being a dam or some possible danger downstream, why not go upstream and try to provide minimal services at that level? Maybe we can keep small problems small, rather than waiting until they become very large and you then have to take a child Q. What kind of kids come out of the home and put them to Elk Hill? in a residential setting. A. Kids ages 11-18 are involved in our educational and our residential programming. We don’t have any murderers or rapists or anything like that. Many of them have not broken the law. They are sometimes victims of difficult, unfortunate situations where things have happened in their families or within their lives that have made it difficult for them. So it’s our task to try to get them back on track .We’ve likened our services to an eddy in a river. An eddy is a rock where water is rushing on both sides and on the other side of the rock the water is coming upstream and it creates a calm spot. We’re that calm spot.

Q. Tell me a little about the award from the Central Virginia Partnership on Youth. I think it was based on a combination of things. They looked at partnerships, community collaboration, service to youth and families. I believe in being a part of my community. So even though I’m a comelately to Powhatan, I didn’t grow up there, I’ve formed relationships with people through sports and other activities . The sport I’ve always enjoyed is basketball, so I’ve used that as a tool to socialize and to get to know people. When I’m asked I try to be a good steward and I try to be involved in as many things as possible. I’ve been on

the YMCA board, I’m on the board of the Free Clinic currently. I serve on the Powhatan Education Foundation, I’m a chief election official in my district, which is Mt. Zion. I think if you’re not part of the solution, you are part of the problem. I try not to complain. I try to make a difference. I open a gym twice a week – the War Memorial Gym – in Powhatan, on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings. I like to play basketball, even at age 56 – but it’s also an opportunity for the youth and the men in our community to interact and socialize and do something positive. We could be playing at 12 noon on a Saturday, but I picked 8 a.m., because I want people to make a connection between what I do on Friday night can impact what I’m able to do on Saturday morning. I need to go to bed so I can then get up and go out and participate in this activity. It’s just little small things, but I think everybody can do things within their community to make it better. I was surprised with the award. Because what I do, I don’t do to draw attention to myself. I like attention, but I really didn’t think anyone was noticing.

Hard of hearing veterans eligible for help from state Contributed Report

The Virginia Department for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (VDDHH) and Virginia Relay has announced that military veterans living with a hearing or speech loss are now automatically eligible for telecommunications equipment through Virginia’s Technology Assistance Program (TAP). Adaptive telecommunications equipment, including text telephones (TTY), captioned telephones (CapTel) and other devices are available to individuals who meet the following qualifications: • A veteran with a hearing or speech loss and proof of an Honorable Discharge • A veteran with a hearing or speech loss and documentation of a service-related disability rating from the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs • A surviving spouse or child of a veteran who was killed in the line of duty and has a hearing or speech loss • An active member of the Virginia National Guard who see Veterans > page 12

Grayson Edwards, who represent the 7th grade on the SCA, spoke in a similar vein. “I was part of the team that helped get the word out and make people aware that they can bring in canned foods for the needy,” she said. “A lot of people helped out. We’re just one big team and we’re all for the same cause.” Grayson said she was surprised at how much food was collected. Eighth-grader Riley Powers said it was rewarding “to know that people who are hungry get this food for Thanksgiving.” SCA co-sponsor Stephanie Falconer, who teaches 6thgrade social studies at GMS, said the SCA was re-established this year “and it was great to see the community turnout and how much food the kids brought in.” The students learned a valuable lesson from the food drive, Falconer said. “I think it makes them aware of the need that’s right here in our community. in Goochland,” she said. GMS students collected 12 boxes of food with a total weight of 407 pounds, Falconer added.

SCA co-sponsor Jamaal Anderson, who teaches special education at GMS with an emphasis in science, said that he also was touched by the students’ effort and the community’s response. “The most rewarding thing once again is just seeing how when the kids put the word out that the Goochland community came together and really [lent] a helping hand with trying to make this thing a success,” he said. “Like Mrs. Falconer said, we haven’t done this for a while and you never really quite know what the response will be, but it was definitely encouraging to see that when we said we needed help, they came out and helped.” Like Falconer, Anderson said GMS students learned a little more about life through the food drive. “Well I think the most important lesson that we can learn here is that when you’re in need, we can put our differences aside and everybody can kind of come together and try to help one another,” he said. “So that to me, that’s something they can gather from this that there are people that are willing to rally to your cause to help you out if you fall on a hard time.” The food drive is something that the students can take satisfaction in with the knowledge that they had a hand in making a difference in a number of people’s lives this Thanksgiving, Anderson said. “While you may not know what families they’re going to reach or they’re going to touch, you know that somebody out there is benefiting from it,” he said.

Turkey continued from > page 3 picture perfect setting along the James River. Starting and finishing at the Westview boat landing, runners had the choice of running the 5K course or the challenging 10K course. Veteran runners, Chuck Clement (Goochland) and Stephanie Jones (Virginia Beach), accompanied by Owen Dog Jones (Gum Spring) opted for the more challenging 10K course. They were put to the test as they climbed Lickinghole Road and wound their way past Smyrna Baptist Church and back down Westview Road to the finish line. The remaining runners on the 5K course kept pace, but it was Geraldine Jones (Gum Spring) and Ruthie Dog Jones (Gum Spring) that broke free from the pack. The two dashed to the finish line for a photo finish; nevertheless, it was Ruthie Dog by a wet nose winning 1st place overall female with the time of 29 minutes and 56 seconds.

At the 55 minute mark, the final three running the 10K course crossed the railroad tracks for the final time as they dashed for the finish line. The crowd cheered as the runners mustered the energy to finish the race strong, but this time it was Owen Dog that pulled away from the pack. No close call for GHS in rematch with Cavs 63-36 By JP Beauchamp Special Correspondent

Perhaps it was the fact that Goochland won the coin toss electing to receive, or the 53yard initial kickoff return of the Bulldogs that was a shadow of things to come. Either way, having stopped King William inches short of attaining the state semi’s last year, Goochland repeated history again, (this time by a wider margin) handily defeating a worthy opponent, the King William Cavaliers 63-36 in the Division 2 East Section playoffs. Up against a larger team with greater depth, the Cavs played their hearts out having anticipated this matchup since their 2011 encounter, only to be frustrated a second time in their efforts for a victory. To the cheers of a heartily enthusiastic Goochland High School home crowd, the Bulldogs offense stuck to their game plan systematically advancing into Cavaliers’ territory time and again, and effectually invalidating the King William defense. But for a turnover, not once were the Bulldogs forced to punt the entire evening. Goochland Head Coach, Joe Fowler was pleased with his teams’ performance. “We had faith in our offense that we were going to be able to move the ball,” he said. “And our defense at the end was able to make the [necessary stops]. We didn’t punt all night long; and again our offensive line and our running backs did a great job of blocking.” With four TDs on the night, Goochland’s RB/DB, Mitchell Brice was a formidable weapon in the Bulldogs’ arsenal, rushing for 207 yards, including a 72-yard sprint to the 8-yard line setting up a 1-yard touchdown run by freshman quarterback Reid Chenault. “For the most part we’ve

got some explosive backs; and Mitchell did a great job tonight,” Fowler said. “He picked up a lot of yards running the ball; but he did a great job blocking as well. It’s a testament to him that the other running backs were able to pick up some yards; and a lot of those yards came behind him.” Others racking up big ground gains rushing for the Dogs were: RB Nathan Mattox (103 yards, 2 TDs); David Dyer (93 yards, one TD); and Mason Engel with 83 yards. Without a doubt, the size of the Bulldogs’ line was a major component to their ability to push through the Cavaliers’ defense. “They were big, and I thought we played a big line with Madison [last week]; but shoot, they were some big boys,” said King William head coach Jim Henderson. “And they were fresh. We’ve got a lot of guys going both ways; and they were able to keep their line fresh. Hats off to them; they had a great game plan and just ran it right through us. We had done pretty good at defending the run all year; and that

was a little bit of a surprise to me that we bent like that. But, you know, hats off to our kids. They fought.” Fowler concurred. “We had about five or six guys playing both ways tonight. We felt that we had a little bit more depth than they did; and that helped us late in the game.” Fight, the Cavaliers did, coming up with six TDs through the course of the evening, each yard gained was a battle. “They didn’t give up,” Henderson said. “It was looking ugly; but we kept going down the field and scoring; but it was just tough to stop those guys. Our kids kept fighting; we were ripping at the ball. Their last touchdown we had three guys ripping at the ball; cause it doesn’t matter if you lose by one, or if you lose by fifty at this point in the year. A loss is a loss; you still go home. Ain’t no sense in keeping a knee on it; we were just trying to keep it close. We were going to stay aggressive.” Adding to the point disparity between the two teams was the Cavaliers’ special teams’ inability to score any extra

points or make conversions the entire evening. A botched handoff early in the second quarter resulted in a turnover fumble recovery on the 50 was another critical play adding to the Bulldogs’ momentum as the game progressed. Despite the gap in points, the Cavaliers actually surpassed the Bulldogs in total yardage (557 to 523). And although the Goochland defense was effectual in shutting down the Cavaliers’ backs, for the most part, when it came to King Williams RB, QB and DB, Freeman McPhearson, there just wasn’t enough manpower to stop him. Earning the respect and admiration of the Bulldogs and their fans and personally matching the Bulldogs total yardage for the evening with 523 yards, McPhearson had 4 TDs on the night; 302 passing; 179 rushing; and 42 receiving. “[McPhearson] is the straw that serves the drink for them,” Fowler said. “He is the man for their team. And we knew that in order to beat King William, we knew that we had to slow

down Freeman McPhearson. And he sure is a heck of a football player. He’s as good of a player as any we have seen in a long time.” As the Bulldogs defense proved successful at shutting down the Cavalier backs, McPhearson was the Cavaliers’ best weapon to continue to move the chains and get points on the board. “Yeah. Ride your horses,” Henderson said. “He’s been a horse all year. He played an excellent game tonight. This is by far his best game all year. He threw the ball well, ran the ball well. I didn’t think he was going to be able to outdo last week’s performance with an interception, a fumble recovery and over two hundred yards rushing, but what he did tonight just shows his character and how well he fights.” With the win, Goochland advances to the state semifinals at Wilson Memorial this Saturday at 1 p.m. “They’re going to be a completely different attack,” Fowler said. “Tonight was a completely different dichotomy in styles.

You know, we ran the ball almost every time and they threw the ball almost every time. “Wilson Memorial is a little bit more like our identity,” Fowler said. “They’re a double winged team. They’re going to line up and go right at you. We had an opportunity to play them last year, so we have enough of a feel for what they do. Coach Major does a great job with the kids up there; and we’re excited for the opportunity to go see them.” King William..... 12 6 6 12 —36 Goochland.......... 21 14 7 21 — 63 G - Brice 12-yd. run KW - Gresham 35-yd reception G - Brice 37 yd run (Brice conversion) KW - Gresham 5 yd reception G - Jefferson 1-yd run (Marria kick) G - Dyer 17-yd run (Marria kick) G - Chenault 1-yd run (Marria kick) KW - McPhearson 33-yd reception KW – McPhearson 9-yd run G - Brice 31-yd run (Marria kick) KW – McPhearson 7-yd run G - Brice 15-yd run (Marria kick) KW – McPhearson 3-yd run G - Mattox 35-yd run (Marria kick)

2012-13 Goochland baksetball previews

Bulldogs will need to compensate for gridiron absences By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent As he steps onto the court for his second year as Goochland’s head basketball coach, Preston Gordon once again has to adapt to the fact that a large group of his players are still donning pads and helmets. As the Bulldog football squad marches through the playoffs, Gordon patiently waits for between six and eight athletes who will play key roles on this year’s basketball team. “First and foremost we will wait for a majority of the team to come off the football field,”

Gordon said. “After the football guys get their basketball legs and in basketball mode, then we should be a pretty tough defensive minded team.” Gordon said the Bulldog basketball squad again will depend on a disciplined controlled game plan to compensate for a lack of size. “Our guards have the ability to dictate the tempo of the game, but with our size we may be content playing solid half court defense,” he said. Gordon will depend on a solid group of returning players to improve on last year’s record.

“Our goals will be to improve on our record, 9-12 last year, and make a run for the JRD district title,” Gordon said. “We also look to make a regional appearance this season, but my biggest concern is to improve as a team each game.” Senior forward Nathan Adams will again supply the muscle for the Bulldogs as a key rebounder and scoring threat. “He’s our emotional leader who goes 100 mph every possession,” Gordon said. Point guard CeeJay Johnson also returns and will be joined by last year’s sometime starter

Evan Smith, who has become a legitimate scoring threat. Junior forward Josh Hayden can shoot from the perimeter or the inside and is a solid rebounder. Nathan Mattox will fill another guard position and should provide spark on offense. “Nathan will be a slasher and he plays a lot bigger than his size,” Gordon said. Harry Talmage also returns for his senior year and provides effective leadership for the Bulldogs. “Harry will provide a major spark on defense with his physical toughness

and his ability to take charge,” Gordon said. Newcomers David Dyer and Cephas Harden move up from starring roles on the JV and provide depth for the Bulldogs. “David provides tough match-ups for most guards because of his size and quickness to get to the rim,” Gordon said. “Cephas Harden comes up from the JV will be able to step in and rebound the ball at will.” Roger Stone and transfer guard, Avery Faulcon supply backup power of offense and should see playing time.

The coach said his philosophy remains solid and he is confident his Bulldogs will execute his game plan. “Playing disciplined defense and out-rebounding our opponents will be important to winning any game. I anticipate that we will be tough to scout because we have so many scoring threats.” “I do not think we will have one or two guys score twentyplus points like we did last year, but our scoring will be more equally distributed.” Goochland tips off their season Dec. 7 at Central in a 7:30 p.m. contest.

With bulk of talent returning, Lady Bulldogs set lofty goals Returning starters could equate to district title By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent Sporting an abundance of returning starters and senior experience, the Goochland girls’ basketball team is setting their preseason goals high. “With nine returning players, I expect us to play well and compete for a district title,” said Coach Sarah Voyack. “The girls want to win districts this year - that’s their number one goal. With seven seniors on the squad, this is their last shot at making a run for the championship.” The team made it to the James River District semifinals last year before falling to eventual champion Amelia, who once again occupies the preseason favorite position. “Amelia returns everyone from last season when they went undefeated in the district. They are quick and athletic,” Voyack said. The coach hopes last sea-

son’s close semifinal is a clear indication that the Bulldogs can compete with the Raiders. “We took them down to the wire in the semifinals of the district tournament after losing by large margins in the regular season so I’m hoping we can play like that against them in the regular season,” Voyack said. The Bulldogs feature a familiar lineup as they kick off the 2012 campaign. “We are returning all five starters from last season, which includes the bulk of our scoring and rebounding,” Voyack said. “Seniors Tammara Taylor, Chakiryn Jackson, and Dana Rodriguez and junior Khayla Leabough provided the bulk of our scoring last season and will look to do the same this season.” Taylor and Jackson were James River All-District selections last year. Plagued by injuries last season, Sydney Ezell returns and should lead the team in rebounding. Jessica Riddle also returns from knee surgery. “Hopefully, they both stay

healthy,” Voyack said. The Bulldog bench is also a year older with more experience. “Junior Abbie Robinson provided quality defensive minutes off the bench for us last year, as well as senior reserves Kelsey Rosenbaum and Rayna Southerland,” the coach said. Newcomers Asia Keith, volleyball star Christina Mills and LaShay Johnson should also contribute. “Asia will look to make an immediate impact with her speed, athleticism, and scoring ability, and volleyball standout Christina Mills is playing for the first time - her natural athletic ability will make a huge impact on defense,” Voyack said. The coach continues to stress fundamentals as the key to the team’s success, and expects a continuing trend of improvement with this year’s campaign. “We need to do the little things right. If we handle pressure, make good passes, box out, and make open shots, we

should be right in the thick of things at the end of the season,” Voyack said. She also said she is pleased with what she’s seen so far. “We are really excited about this season,” Voyack said. “The girls are bringing a higher level

of energy and a more positive attitude than I’ve seen in the last five years. I hope we continue to elevate it throughout the season. The girls have the ability - they need to work hard and work together and they can reach their goal of a district

championship at the end of the season.” Goochland tips off their season on Thursday night, hosting Fluvanna at 7:30 p.m. They will then play in the Dale E. Travis Invitational over the weekend.

Junior Khayla Leabough (30) will be one of four returning starters expected to carry the bulk of the scoring load for the Bulldogs this season.
