STATE CHAMPIONS

On Saturday night, the Goochland football team returned to the Group A Division 2 state championship game in style. After falling to Gretna in the 2011 title game, the Bulldogs came back to the Salem City Stadium with a vengeance, dominating the seemingly unstoppable Essex Trojans 41-14 to claim the school’s second state football championship. The DeHarts have had a rough time of it these past few years, with Alice undergoing several surgeries and suffering head injuries in a serious auto accident in 2009. Just this year the so called “Derecho” sheared off their front porch. But that hasn’t prevented the couple from doing what they always do each Christmas season -- lighting up their section of Rockville Road. The DeHarts, who have lived a 2375 Rockville Road for 25 years, can be counted on to bring some Christmas color to their stretch of the welltraveled road. Alice gives her husband David, an auto technician, most of the credit. “He puts everything he has into it,” she said at an evening interview at their home last week, shortly after the magic hour of 5 p.m. when the timers start the pumps that fill the figures withe air. Like magic, a giant Santa that lay flat on the ground during the daylight hours slowly comes to life, reaching a towering height of 22 feet when fully inflated. David said he invests several hundred dollars more each year in new additions to the Yuletide display. He usually starts work shortly after

Orapax hearing date unclear By Ben Orcutt Special Correspodent

Linda Trice, who opposes the Orapax CUP, would like the BOS to do another sound study.

District 2 Supervisor Manuel Alvarez Jr., whose district includes the Orapax Hunting Preserve, confirmed that Trice’s suggestion for a more comprehensive sound study had merit. “We heard today a suggestion that sounds like a good suggestion, which is to do one additional test and so we’ve decided not to [schedule the public hearing for Jan. 2] at this time, so now we just need to know what the advertising date is,â€? he said. However, the advertising date for Jan. 2, could be a moot point based on the applicant’s willingness to conduct another sound study, Alvarez said. â€œâ€Ś if the applicant says we’re not going to do it, then we have to make our decision based on that,â€? Alvarez said. “ It’s not going to change anything. We might as well do it on [Jan.] 2. If we have the hearing on [Jan.] 2, one of the things that will come out is the applicant didn’t want to do the study and we will base our decision on that.â€? Asked if he was concerned that the Board could be making a decision without holding a public debate on the merits of an additional sound study, Board Chairman Ned. S. Creasey said that, “It won’t be done behind closed doors.â€? Creasey suggested that the matter may come up tonight at the supervisors’ joint meeting with the Economic Development Authority at the county library. However, he added that he did not know if it will. “I can assure you everything’s above board,â€? Creasey said. Contacted last week, Dykers would not comment on whether he would be willing to conduct another sound study. “I have to find out more of the facts myself before I can comment, so my answer is no comment,â€? he said.

The Board of Supervisors has delayed a decision to advertise for public hearing a request for a conditional use permit to operate a sporting clays shooting range on the Orapax Hunting Preserve in western Goochland County. Andrew and Nancy Dykers have filed a request for a CUP to operate the sporting clays shooting range on four acres of the 673-acre hunting preserve at 3831 River Road West, just east of Rock Castle Road. Last month, the Planning Commission voted 6-1 to recommend denial of the request. During the citizens comment period at the supervisors’ Tuesday afternoon session, Linda Trice, who lives near the hunting preserve, suggested that the supervisors consider conducting a more comprehensive sound study that would span over a weekend rather than rely on a recent study where she says only 15 shots were fired. While no public hearing was scheduled for Tuesday on the Orapax request, the supervisors appeared to take Trice’s suggestion to heart. The only item on the agenda relating to Orapax was that it was eligible to be scheduled for a public hearing at the supervisors’ Jan. 2, meeting. County Administrator Rebecca T. Dickson told the Board that if the Orapax request were to be approved, staff would have some additional conditions they would recommend be put into place. The supervisors were concerned that if they were to request an additional sound study whether or not it could be completed in time for the required advertising date prior to the Jan. 2, meeting. Dickson said she did not have the date that the advertisement would have to be published, but that she could get back to the supervisors and they could make a decision on whether or not to go forward with the Jan. 2, public hearing and that a public meeting was not necessary for the supervisors to make their announcement or the reasons for their decision. Trice suggested that Orapax could hold a free shooting weekend so that the repetitive nature of the shooting could be gauged. “We want them to do it 9 to 5 for a weekend,â€? she said following the Tuesday afternoon session. Asked why she did not have the advertisement date prior to Tuesday’s meeting, Dickson said, “ I didn’t know the board was going to discuss maybe not having the board meeting on Jan. 2‌.They still wouldn’t have known what we can get done. We’ve got to go back and talk to the applicant.â€?

Middle School teacher. She had been living with Harris in Henrico for three years, and he is accused of attacking her there Nov. 2. Harris was not arrested in the Henrico assault case until Nov. 26, and at the same time was charged with the Nov. 17 destruction of items in the apartment he shared with the woman as well as the theft of a handgun from the apartment. Court records indicate that the arrest may have been delayed because Harris had entered a mental health facility sometime after Nov. 17 and could not be located. Also unclear is whether Henrico police encountered Harris when they accompanied the school teacher Nov. 17 to the apartment in the 2900 block of Bywater Drive in Henrico’s West End. Harris, who worked at the Bull & Bear, a private club in downtown Richmond, received a $1,500 bond on the Henrico charges from a Henrico magistrate Nov. 26 when he was arrested, an amount that did not change when Harris was arraigned in Henrico Juvenile and Domestic Relations District Court the next day, Nov. 27. Once he made bond, he apparently was freed. The teacher was attacked Wednesday near her car in the Goochland Middle School parking lot about 7 a.m. Goochland authorities released 911 tapes of the frantic call made to authorities as the attack progressed, and two teachers pulled the teacher’s attacker off of her. Court records in Richmond show that a city woman received an emergency protective order against Harris in early November after she accused him of beating her when she tried to make him

leave her apartment. He had asked for their friendship to become more serious and became angered when she rebuffed him, according to her written statement to police. The assault resulted in six stitches in her head, she told police. “Uriah got mad and suddenly started yelling that I just didn’t get it and I will never get it,” the woman wrote, then describing how she was knocked to the floor and beaten. The woman declined to comment when reached Thursday. The assault charge was dismissed and she did not seek a permanent protective order. Harris, the father of two children, was divorced in July 2011, Richmond court records show. There was no indication of why the marriage, which took place in December 2005 in Henrico, dissolved. The teacher attacked Wednesday is listed as a witness in the divorce case; she provided an affidavit stating that Harris had not cohabited with his wife for a year and that the marriage produced two children. Harris is scheduled for trial in February on the Henrico charges of assault, grand larceny of a firearm and destruction of property; his arraignment on the Goochland charges — aggravated malicious wounding, possession of a knife on school grounds, driving on a revoked license and assault of a person protected by a protective order — was delayed Thursday. He is being held without bond in the Henrico jail. The teacher’s family said Thursday evening that she had been released from the hospital and was recovering at an undisclosed location.

Supervisors, EDA discuss Goochland growth plans By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

Where should Goochland grow and how can the Economice Development Authority (EDA) foster that growth? Those were some of the topics discussed at the joint meeting last Wednesday of the two panels at the Goochland Library. “It’s how and where, not whether to grow, said Board Vice-Chairman Ken Peterson. “That decision was made 10 years ago, he said. Goochland’s Economic Development Director Matthew Ryan gave an overview of the current state of development, focusing on a variety of measurements of the county’s recent growth and future prospects. Recent small business growth statistics did not sit well with EDA member Jack Joyce, owner of Down Under Limousine. Joyce called the increase in business licenses from 1450 to 1492 “pathetic.

“We need to concentrate on small businesses, said Joyce. “What’s the chance of getting another Capital One? he asked. Supervisors and authority members spent much of the meeting discussing where the county should concentrate its growth efforts, coming to a consensus that the best focus would be on the eastern end containing the Tuckahoe Creek Service District, Centerville Village and West Creek Business Park. Oilville Village and the Courthouse Village were the next two areas agreed upon. EDA member Ben Slone wanted to know what comes next. “The question is, what does the Board want the EDA to focus on? he asked. Peterson responded that the EDA could work on addressing the challenges involved in getting the targeted areas ready for development. County Administrator Rebecca Dickson suggested that the EDA could

“be that higher level think tank. EDA member pointed out that the EDA has six volunteers but no staff. “The EDA task might fall to the bottom while I do what I do for a living, he said. “There’s not enough money to do what has to be done, said Joyce, lamenting the fact that the county couldn’t afford to be a member of the Greater Richmond Partnership. Dickson said Tuesday that the meeting was useful in establishing metrics for measuring economic growth and selecting the areas to focus on. “With their new role, a lot of tactical items will be handled at the county level, said Dickson, referring to the consensus to have the EDA focus its time on more strategic planning. Ryan said the meeting set the stage for future EDA meetings with the definition of priority areas and agreement ton the metrics to measure progress.

Goochland wins -- in more ways than one The Goochland Bulldogs won their second state championship Saturday, with a convincing victory over previously undefeated Essex. It was a great ending to a week that showed examples of the best and worst human beings are capable of, all happening in our own backyard. As for the worst, the county was shocked at the brutal attack on a Goochland Middle School teacher in the school parking lot last Wednesday, an assault that could have ended in tragedy, according to Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew, but for the intervention of two other school employees. Teachers Doug and Ann Rohrer stopped the attack, putting their own safety at risk to help their co-worker (See letter from Superintendent Lane on this page). They could have stood aside and called 911 and waited for sheriff’s deputies to arrive. Instead, they jumped on the man beating the teacher and stopped the assault. It’s an example of courage that should inspire all of us. Elsewhere around the county, other events helped paint the portrait of an involved citizenry. Early Saturday morning, rather than sleeping in, a group of almost 100 volunteers gathered at Goochland Middle School to wrap presents for the less fortunate, presents that will be distributed this weekend by the Goochland Christmas Mother program. It’s another example of community service and a constant current

of voluntary giving by churches, service organizations and individuals that goes on year-round in Goochland. Friday night many Goochlanders gathered, despite a steady rain, for the annual Christmas tree lighting at the Goochland YMCA. And a jolly old fellow with a big white beard showed up to hear what youngsters were hoping to see under their own trees on Christmas morning. And Sunday afternoon, the Goochland Rotary brought the Richmond Symphony to Goochland High School to raise money for the Goochland Free Clinic. It was the kind of week that provides one with reinforcement for whatever view of humanity one wishes to choose, reminding us yet again that life is what you make of it, regardless of external events. You could choose the negative and focus on the troubling assault at the school and conclude that life is fraught with problems and violence. Or you could choose the positive, and recall the life-saving intervention of the Rohrers and the volunteer work and community events, like the Christmas Mother, the tree lighting and the symphony concert. No, folks are not perfect but here in Goochland and elsewhere they do the best they can. In most cases, that’s pretty darn good in my book. -Ken Odor

Chamber hosts holiday open house Photo by Ken Odor

Jane Crupp, left and Bob Hammond are greeted by Goochland Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Bonnie Creasy at last week’s Chamber’s open house. The Chamber celebrated one year in their new office location at Courthouse Village. Bonnie Creasy, Executive Director for the Chamber of Commerce said, “This was a great opportunity to celebrate with our neighbors and introduce others to what we have to offer at this location. With Nadolski’s Grand Re-opening; Bella Sicilia expanding with a banquet room and The Center For Rural Culture sharing all that they have to offer the community, this was a win win for all of us. I hope to continue this tradition in the future. On behalf of the Goochland Chamber of Commerce we wish a prosperous New Year to our business community.”

Letters to the Editor For heroic acts on behalf of a colleague They wake up earlier than most of us every day because they want to get to school well before the students. I’m sure they left the house that morning as they do every day expecting a normal day full of fun and learning with students. When they arrived at work and stepped out of their car, they saw a colleague being assaulted by a man nearly twice each of their size. Without hesitation Mrs. Rohrer, a fellow teacher, sprung to action and jumped on the man to stop her friend from further injuries. Mr. Rohrer also jumped in and eventually they pulled the man off her and the attacker fled the scene. The rest of the story has been well documented, he later turned himself in to the Sheriff’s office and the teacher was taken to the hospital and is expected to recover. Our Sheriff, Jim Agnew, has clearly stated that these teachers saved our colleague’s life. In rural communities like Goochland, we like it quiet and we want the crime more often seen in urban areas to stay far away. In a flash, on December 5, our small community

was shocked and saddened by a brutal attack on one of our teachers. In many areas, the attack and/or the school’s response to the matter would be the primary story, but due to the actions of Doug and Ann Rohrer, Goochland showed that we are better than that. They put themselves in harm’s way to save their colleague’s life. In time, people will likely forget the attack and all the sadness and concern we have about what happened, but I want to make sure that we never forget these heroes. Let’s remember what they did and allow it to inspire us. I believe that as teachers, we get into education to make the world a better place. The Rohrers were humble, they didn’t ask for recognition and turned down interviews with the local media. Their only statement was: “It was only through prayer and the presence of God that we did what we were able to do. We were so grateful as well to be helped by a host of amazing GMS & GHS faculty family! Most importantly we thank God that our colleague will get well! We love her!” I don’t know about you, but I am inspired. We work our entire careers to make the world a better place by improving the lives of children and

About 100 people gathered Friday evening for the third annual Holiday Tree Lighting ceremony at the Goochland YMCA. Heavy rain drove the festivities inside the building and under the canopy outside the entrance but that did not deter the revelers on a mild December night. After the countdown to the tree lighting, the highlight of the evening was Santa’s arrival, as always via a Company 5 firetruck to the acccompaniement to waililng sirens. First to consult with the jolly elf was eight-year old Annabelle Berry, who asked for a Easy Bake Oven. “You can make all kinds of treats in it,” she said, explaining why she asked for it. YMCA Executive Director Jay Sykes praised the collaborative effort between the YMCA, the Parks and Recreation and Facilities Maintenance Department and the Goochland Fire/ EMS Department. “Then we have all these fabulous volunteers,” said Sykes. “Each year it builds momentum,” said Parks and Recreation Director Derek Stamey. “We couldn’t do it without each other.”

Long-time Christmas Mother committee volunteers Doris Brooking, left, Shirley Christian and Audrey Shannon work in the bike room last Saturday morning. About 100 volunteers helped wrap gifts and fill boxes in preparation for this Saturday, when the gifts will be distributed. 2012 Christmas Mother Heidi Hall said the need was up this year, with 1041 individuals in 388 families being helped. Last year the total was about 900 people served. Hall said the program had raised close to $50,000 of their $60,000 goal for this year. Volunteers from the Virginia Corrections Center for Women also helped out with the wrapping. The Christmas Mother program is active year round and those wanting to donate can find more information on their web site at www.goochlandchristmasmother.org.

Pregame breakdown turns into magical day By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

SALEM- Football fans making their way to Salem City Stadium on Saturday may have come across an odd sight as they reached the outskirts of the city. Most likely a doubletake occurred if anyone from Goochland saw head football coach Joe Fowler walking the shoulder of the road, trash bag in hand, cleaning up litter along the highway. But what seemed an illtimed demonstration of civic duty may have merely been an omen of a much bigger cleanup on Willis White Field later in the evening. When the Goochland team bus broke down in Interstate 81 just outside of Roanoke, the Bulldog players, coaches and trainers were left stranded just short of their goal. Only a year earlier Goochland made the same journey which ended in just that result. The Bulldogs traveled to Salem sporting an undefeated record and high expectations. On that chilly night, the 2011 Bulldogs came up short of their goal in attempt to claim the school’s second state title. Picnicking on the side of the road in a broken down bus, the 2012 Goochland team had time to ponder that loss and the implications of their return. It was too much for Fowler. “I was so uptight and nervous that I grabbed a trash bag and started walking down the edge picking up trash just because I needed something to do to occupy my mind,” he said. There was no question that Fowler and the players had a lot to think about. The Bulldogs were facing an undefeated Essex squad that came into the state championship game boasting a record setting offense. The famed air attack was daunting. Trojan sophomore quarterback

Above: Goochland running back Mitchell Brice, center breaks through a hole in the Essex defense to pick up a first down.

Dominek Broaddus set VHSL records with 3,940 passing yards and 54 touchdowns. Essex opened the season by pounding defending state champion Gretna 41-18; the team that defeated Goochland a year earlier. Meanwhile the Bulldogs started the season 1-2. Fowler was worried about his team matching up against the Trojans’ size and speed. The Essex roster lists 27 players who are six foot or taller, Goochland has less than half that number. The average weight of the Trojan line is 252 lbs with 6-10 sophomore tackle Markius Lucas topping the scales at 400 lbs. The average weight of the Bulldog linemen is 204 with sophomore defensive lineman Bradley Clore listed at 5-8, 155. On paper, the state championship was a game where few gave the Bulldogs much chance

of hanging close let alone coming away with a win. Prior to kickoff, a photographer that knew Essex well walked the sidelines boasting to all other media members they were going to do a lot of running during the game. The photographer warned everyone to stay ahead of the Essex action or they would get left behind. “Nobody gave us a chance at the beginning of the season,” Fowler said. “Nobody definitely gave us a chance this week considering what a great team Coach (John) Fulks has. We were just going to try to take what they gave us.” However, the Bulldogs knew championships are not won on paper. Instead, they are won through the spirit and determination of the combatants regardless of size, speed and skill. The 2011 loss gave Goochland everything they

needed to win in 2012. “I knew that they really wanted to be back here, come out on the better half of that deal,” said Goochland assistant coach Bryan Jordan. “Last year; absolutely the worst feeling I’ve ever felt,” said senior running back Mason Engel. “It left the biggest hole in my stomach and I never thought we’d be back the next year. But sure enough, we suffered early in the season but we stuck it out, we had our backs against the wall some games, but we just kept pushing every game.” Likewise, the Goochland players came into the contest with the knowledge of what it was like to be on both sidelines. They knew what was going through the minds of the undefeated Essex players. “Being 14-0 is a difficult thing,” Fowler said. Stepping onto the Willis White Field for the second time, they now knew what it was like to be Gretna the year before.

“I felt like literally we were exactly like Gretna was,” Engel said. “Lost the year before, away team, facing an undefeated team. We had a lot of hope coming into this game.” While everyone waited to watch the Essex offense explode, Goochland’s defense held them to a three-and-out with no yards gained on their first offensive possession. The Essex photographer was not heard from again. Though Goochland was forced to punt on their first offensive possession, they did move the ball against the vaunted Essex team. On the Bulldogs’ second possession they scored. Then they scored again- and again. There were stunned looks on the Trojan’s side of the field. Broaddus came into the game with nearly two and one half miles passing in which he was only picked off nine times. Goochland’s underrated defense came away with two interceptions and limited the Trojan quarterback to 130

yards. As the game went on, Engel began to sense of demoralization from the Essex players. “Every play they had guys just barely getting up,” he said. “They were crossed over, dehydrating, cramping up but we stuck it out every single play.” In a contest that many pundits gave Goochland little chance, they not only won, they dominated. The final score was 41-14 but it could have easily been much worse. Take away the final seconds of each half and the Bulldogs pitched a shutout-rout. “It was a big surprise,” said sophomore quarterback Jordan Jefferson. “They’re a good team. They played real hard. We just came out on top that’s all.” The day that began broke down on the side of the road, ended with one of the most surprising victories in Goochland history. “A magical day,” Fowler said. “We get to have a picnic then we get to come and do this.”

Goochland wins state championship over Essex 41-14 By Billy Fellin Richmond Times Dispatch

SALEM- The Goochland Bulldogs’ bus broke down near Roanoke as they were making their way to Salem City Stadium on Saturday for the Group A, Division 2 state championship football game. Instead of seeing it as a bad omen, Bulldogs coach Joe Fowler saw it as a teaching opportunity. “Coach said ‘The one who blocks out all the distractions, that’s the team ” Goochland running back Mason Engel said. “And that’s that’s going to win,’ what we did.” Not even a broken-down bus could stop the Bulldogs (13-2) as they accumulated 381 rushing yards in a 41-14 victory over Essex. This is the Bulldogs’ second Group A, Division 2 title. The first came in 2006. “This is a very special group of young men,” Fowler said. “To face adversity as we have all year, and to have it end like this is magical.” After the two teams exchanged three-and-outs to start the game, Goochland received the ball and got its running game going. The 10play drive was exclusively runs,

including six from sophomore quarterback Jordan Jefferson that ended with him in the end zone. “We just decided to come out with a goal and win,” he said. “The line did a great job. Everyone played well.” From there, the Bulldogs ran away from the Trojans (141), capitalizing on Essex mistakes and penalties, leaning on a running game that has been successful all season. “We pride ourselves here on being able to run the ball,” Fowler said. “We believe in a physical offense.” Jefferson rushed 16 times for 110 yards and a touchdown, and Mitchell Brice had 15 carries for 102 yards and two touchdowns. David Dyer added 60 yards and two touchdowns and Connor Saunders had 36 yards and two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ attack. “It was led by great blocking up front,” said Engel, who rushed for 64 yards. “We were able to get the edge.” Goochland’s defense also came up big, holding the explosive Trojans to just 190 yards and their lowest point total of the season. Essex entered the contest averaging 38 points per game.

Engel and Jefferson each intercepted Dominic Broaddus after he threw only nine all season. “I just sat there and waited,” Engel said of his interception. “We got great pressure on the quarterback. I read it and it was an overthrow. You just have to defend on the big plays and we worked on that a lot.” Part of the strategy to keep the Trojans’ offense at bay was to utilize the kicking game. Goochland attempted three onside kicks, two of which they recovered and the other went to Essex because of a Bulldogs penalty. Goochland also pinned Essex deep in its territory after the Trojans misplayed a punt. Fowler noted that since the Trojans’ opponents hadn’t scored many points against them, they weren’t used to have that element be a part of the game. “We felt we could use that to our advantage,” he said. This was Goochland’s second trip to the title game in

as many years, but the way the game went was surprising to the Bulldogs. “The best thing of my life,”

Jefferson said of the win. “It this time.” was a big surprise. They’re a “I knew it was going to good team and they played either be a close game or a hard. We just came out on top blowout,” Engel said.
