Schools, sheriff honor Rohrers
Registrar has festival of trees
Couple intervened to save colleague By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
Goochland Middle School teachers Doug and Ann Rohrer were honored at the Goochland School Board workshop meeting last week for their intervention that stopped an assault on a fellow teacher. The School Board presented them a plaque “for a selfless act of heroism on behalf of a colleague” with new Superintendent James Lane reading from his blog post praising their heroics. “Remember, your kids are being taught by heroes,” said Lane. “In 36 years of law enforcement I have never seen anything like what you did and to us in the Sheriff’s Office it’s very clear that you saved someone’s life,” said Goochland Sheriff Jim Agnew, before giving the Rohrers a second plaque from his office. The couple did not speak after receiving a standing ovation from those present. The two teachers stopped an assault on a fellow teacher on the

Deep Run Anniversary Committee Chair Tom Mackell, publisher Wayne Dementi and author Aynsley Fisher pose with her new book on Deep Run Hunt Club.
Local author chronicles Deep Run Hunt Club history By Ben Orcutt Special Correspondent
A lifelong member of the Deep Run Hunt Club, it was only fitting that Goochland native Aynsley Miller Fisher was selected to write a book about the club during the 125th anniversary of its founding. The title of the book is “For the Love of the Sport – The Horses, Hounds, Foxes and Friends of the Deep Run Hunt Club.” “My grandfather [the late Judge Vincent C. Adamson] joined in the 1960s and my mom [Bettsie Adamson] was a teenager at that time and they both rode horses and fox hunted and my mother horse showed,” Fisher said. “So they were very involved at that time Parents: David & Sarah Jane Narron and then I was born into a Grandparents: Robert & Angelina Sampson, family that was very involved Keith & Jeanine Corbett in Deep Run….I think the Date of Birth: March 12th, 2012 story goes I rode before I could walk. ridden.” Fisher, 38, has an undergraduate degree in English from Virginia Tech and a Masters of Fine Arts degree in creative writing from VCU. “I work from home and I do a lot of different kinds of writing,” she said. “I do a lot of grant writing actually on behalf of Goochland County and then a lot of copywriting and all variety of writing.” Deep Run Hunt Club was founded in Richmond in 1887 and its name comes from the Deep Run stream in western Henrico County, Fisher said. The club moved to its current location on Manakin Road in Manakin-Sabot in 1950, she said. “The story of Deep Run has always been that they’re always moving to stay ahead of development,” said Fisher, who lives near the club with her husband Bryan and their 2-year-old son Roby. Deep Run moved the kennels and center of its fox hunt-
ing to Cumberland County in 1995, Fisher said. Over the years the club built a swimming pool, tennis courts and began the tradition of the Deep Run Hunt Club Horse Show, which continues today. While the book contains some of the club’s history, the intent was to celebrate its spirit, Fisher said, adding that the heart of the book lies in the stories told by the club’s members. “It’s a big, beautiful coffee table book, but it also has the feel of being sort of a scrapbook of people’s memories,” Fisher said. The 144-page, 9” X 12” book contains more than 475 pictures and was published by Goochland resident Wayne Dementi of Dementi Milestone Publishing in Manakin-Sabot. The book retails for $60 and is available at Deep Run Hunt Club and at Dementi’s Books of Richmond in the Village Shopping Center at Three Chopt Road and Patterson Avenue.

Goochland Registrar Frances Ragland’s house is full. Full of Christmas, that is. And more specifically, Christmas trees. Twelve at last count. Ragland and her husband Dana, who passed away last January, designed the house on Jackson Shop Road together and moved into it 14 years ago. “Putting up the trees brings back a lot of good memories,” she said. She starts after the fall election (in Virginia there’s an election every year). “I use it to de-stress after the election,” she explained. “It takes me two weeks straight.” Born and raised in Goochland, Ragland said there was only one Christmas tree in her childhood home. “We used to go out and cut a tree,” she recalled. Other memories of that time include her mother, Laverne Carter’s baking, she said. Ragland got into the multiple tree business when she moved to her current home. One of the reasons for more trees are all the ornaments Ragland has collected. “You have so many ornaments so you need more trees,” she explained. But they not all alike. Each tree is different, with its own theme. There’s her traditional tree with 522 Hallmark ornaments, a Coca-Cola tree, a lighthouse tree, a dog tree, a 12 days of Christmas tree - the list goes on. On the dog tree an ornament barks to the tune of “Jingle Bells” when activated. Multiple trees run in the family, evidently. Ragland said her sister Brenda Dunn has eight. But although she enjoys the yearly project of putting up and decorating her trees, Ragland said she’s reacher her limit. “I’m not adding anymore,” she said emphatically. “This is all.”

School Board may move meetings NAACP asks for outside agency to examine disproportionality By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com
The Goochland School Board may soon be meeting in the same room used by the Board of Supervisors. In his first meeting as Superintendent of Goochland Schools, James Lane introduced a number of policy revisions, one of which would move regular and workshop School Board meetings to the Board of Supervisors meeting room in the county administration meeting, with both beginning at 6:30 p.m. The School Board could approve such a change at its scheduled Dec. 18 meeting. School Board Chairperson Beth Hardy said she thought approval by the board for such a change was likely. The regular School Board meeting was a lengthy one, lasting to about 11 p.m. Once again a representative
of the Goochland County NAACP addressed the board during the public comment period. NAACP Education Committee Chair Elaine Wadkins, while welcoming Lane, noted that her organization still wants an outside organization to examine issues of disproportionality between African American students and others in areas of academic performance and discipline. “We have asked three superintendents, Dr. Lane you have become number four, I guess, for an outside source coming in and evaluate where we need to go and what we need to do so we do not have this disproportionality.” Wadkins also asked that the School Board consider increasing minority hiring by increasing recruiting at historically black colleges. In a letter dated Nov. 30, 2012, then Acting Superintendent Peter Gretz provided Wadkins with a number of statistics on academic performance and discipline for Goochland students. The numbers showed higher rates of both In-School and Out-of-School suspen-

sions for African American students. Whereas African American students make up about 21 percent of the student population according to the letter, they were involved in 37 percent of Out-ofSchool Suspensions. Lane said last week that the school division is committed to eliminating discrimination and disproportionality. He was scheduled to meet with NAACP representatives
on Dec. 17. In other business, the School Board appeared likely to add a student representative to the board, after approving a first reading of a policy that would have the Goochland High School principal nominate two students from which the superintendent would choose a student liason to the School Board subject to its approval.

Goochland appears to be headed in the right direction in terms of its legislative agenda for the upcoming session of the General Assembly, according to County Attorney Norman B. Sales. During the afternoon session of the Board of Supervisors’ Dec. 4, meeting, Sales updated the panel on the status of the county’s legislative priorities that the Board adopted on Nov. 7. One of the top priorities for Goochland in the upcoming session of the General Assembly is to seek legislation that would allow the county to adjust the boundaries of a service district by amending the ordinance that created the district. Other items on the county’s legislative agenda include water issues for state correctional facilities, reimbursement for the cost of political primaries, reimbursement for expenses and compensation for the electoral board and general registrar, reapportionment with regard to inmate population, and assistance in providing access to high-speed Internet services. Sales told the supervisors that some members of the county’s legislative delegation have already pre-filed some of the bills. It is important that local government officials attend committee hearings in the House of Delegates and the Senate to lobby for the legislation, Sales added. “I think they would prefer elected officials more so than
staff,” he said. The legislative process has just begun, Sales added. “This is just the first step in getting a member of the House or a member of the Senate just to carry your bill,” he said following the supervisors’ afternoon session. “Once they get introduced and put out there, then if other members of the House of Delegates or other members of the Senate might sign on to it as co-patrons that might be an early indication of support for it. But still you really don’t know. You have to wait until you go to the committee assignment and committee hearing process to see how well they will do there.” The measures for which Goochland is seeking funding would also impact other localities, Sales said. “All three of these bills relating to reimbursement for primary costs, presidential primary, general costs of the registrar, they would have statewide applications as well,” he said. “But those also involve the state paying money. So any time where you have the state’s being asked to pay money to the localities, then it’s going to be an uphill battle.” However, Sales said he thinks Goochland is off to a good start. “So we are very hopeful, actually very excited that we have members of our General Assembly who are willing to carry these bills for us and we will do our best to sort of shepherd these along during the General Assembly session,” he said.

Dealing with tragedy

I wrote in this space last week about how the good things outweighed the bad in my mind here in Goochland, with particular reference to the school system. Little did I know that the same week that column appeared the nation would be faced with another deadly school shooting and its aftermath. In times like these people turn to that which sustains them, be it church, family, friends or community and indeed it was like the entire nation was a community grieving about what happened in Newtown, Conn. Church attendance was likely up this weekend, as folks sought solace and understanding. Even irregular attendees like myself may have felt the need for comfort and peace to be found there and so turned to houses of worship. While many advocated that the nation allow some time for the facts to emerge about the shooting before trying to figure out how to prevent future attacks, it was inevitable that groups with positions on the issues involved, most specifically gun control, would feel compelled to come forth and make their case for the action they think might make repeats of this week’s tragedy less likely. That’s certainly understandable. If you think you have an answer to a problem, it makes no sense not to advocate for it. And if you think those remedies are

mistaken, it makes no sense not to make that clear. But what does seem necessary for anything constructive to come out of these tragic deaths is for those on all sides of the arguments to stop demonizing their opponents. Because it seems clear to me that all people of good will share equal concern for the parents and families and entire community of Newtown. So, after a respectful passage of time for grieving and to honor those who have passed, let’s hope that all who feel the need to weigh in with solutions, whether it’s changes in firearm laws, more mental heath treatment or intervention, or protection of schools and other public places, do so from a position that acknowledges that everyone wants the same thing. We all want events like Newtown to become less and less frequent. And demonizing those we disagree with on how to achieve that goal will not help one bit. Finally listening to one another might. Locally, it’s a natural thing for parents to want to know what Goochland is doing to deal with potential threats and Goochland’s new superintendent has started a conversation on that via his blog at http://blogs.glnd.k12.va.us/ jlane/2012/12/15/tragic-event-inconnecticut. -Ken Odor

Letters to the Editor Our culture contributes to violent acts “Her little ones sounded out a cry of distress...mourn for him all who live around him.” Jer. 48 Our tears and prayers go out to the families in the Newtown tragedy. For 20 helpless children to die in that classroom is unspeakable evil. Even at Christmastime. Our President said we need “meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this.” Adam Lanza, an honor student who loved evil and Goth, is not the sole killer. Our culture fosters dark and violent entertainment. And the disturbed ones act it out. Some can’t wait for the movie version of Newtown. And what’s worse, slap on a Christian “testimony”, and the preachers will promote it (“Amish Grace”). “Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, instead even expose them.” Eph. 5 Fellow Americans, let’s stop the violent and sexual entertainment in movies, music, video games, books, whatever. Things are getting worse. Let’s stop purchasing, promoting, and praising those who create such evil that is destroying our families! Turn
to Jesus. Stop the horror shows. Save the children. Clareann Berchtold Maidens

Need live fire demonstration Whether one calls it another sound study or one calls it a live fire demonstration, the fact remains that Andrew Dykers should let the Board of Supervisors and his neighbors hear a true representation of what his proposed commercial sporting clays operation will sound like. In my opinion, the previous sound study was a waste of time, money and effort. It has been repeatedly stated by residents who oppose the range that the issue is not how loud the shots might be, but how the repetition of that noise over the course of hours, days, weeks and months will affect Orapax’s neighbors. County officials said they understood that issue, yet they fixated on an almost useless test of the decibel levels of 15 shots! The completed sound study falls woefully short of anything that would convince me I have nothing to worry about from
the noise, no matter the decibel level. Mr. Dykers has been quoted as saying each shooter at the range would fire around 50 shots. The present Conditional Use Permit (CUP) limits the number of shooters to 24 a day, six days a week. As we all know, 50 shots each by 24 shooters over the course of a day equals 1,200 shots each day. Over an eight hour day, that’s 150 shots an hour. And folks, that’s a heck of a lot of shots!! In both Planning

Commission meetings I attended, representatives of Orapax assured us all that their operation of a sporting clays range would not be a nuisance to their neighbors and that long time residents were wrong when they told the Planning Commission how bad things were when Orapax illegally operated a shooting range over 20 years ago. Yet in these same meetings Orapax has refused to perform a live fire demonstration. So, why does Orapax
refuse to prove their case? The Board of Supervisors owes it to the residents of Goochland County to make their decisions based on good, reliable information. Without knowing the impact that 1,200 more shots each day will have on our community, how can they, in good conscience, vote to approve the Orapax CUP?

Goochland student wins Virginia Tech 50th Anniversary icon competition Contributed Report In one of the first events leading up to its 50th anniversary, College of Architecture and Urban Studies students, faculty, staff, emeritus faculty, and alumni were invited to a design competition to create an icon and poster to commemorate the milestone. David Spradlin of ManakinSabot Va., a senior majoring in visual communication design in the College of Architecture and Urban Studies, was awarded a $5,000 scholarship for his winning entry. Spradlin’s icon design was based on his research on the history of the college and the influence of the Bauhaus on founding Dean Charles Burchard, as represented through the streamlined architectural design. He also illustrated a sense of a community and collaboration between the schools within the college by using the interwoven numerals making up the stylized 50. The jury for the competition comprised renowned designers Sagi Haviv, a partner and designer at Chermayeff & Geismar, a leading graphic design firm in the fields of corporate identity,

brand development, and logo design; Lisa Mahar, College of Architecture and Urban Studies alumna and founder of Kid O; and Rocco Piscatello, founder of Piscatello Design Centre, an independent strategy and visual design systems consultancy working for clients and cities worldwide. When evaluating the designs, the jury considered a number of criteria. They wanted the mark to be a memorable, unique, and appropriate representation of the college for its milestone anniversary, and while artistic merit was an important factor, other key considerations were scalability and versatility, including the potential to be reproduced both two-dimensionally and three-dimensionally. In his comments following the awards presentation in Cowgill Hall, juror Sagi Haviv offered the full-house crowd his advice on design. “Always start from an idea — never just do something for decoration. Before you do anything, think of what you want to say, have a strong idea, and then go execute it,” Haviv said. “If there is an idea behind some-

thing, it engages the viewer. The viewer has to think something about it, feel something about it; it’s not about beauty … the idea will make it beautiful.” During their visit to Blacksburg for the awards presentation, the three jurors also gave guest lectures on their own work and experiences and toured the campus, talking with students in industrial design, architecture, and visual communication design and providing feedback and professional advice. For many participants in the
competition, the opportunity to receive feedback from the internationally known designers was its own reward. “By far the greatest gain from this competition was working and meeting with the jury. It’s not every day that you have an opportunity to put your work in front of world-class designers like these,” Spradlin said. “In the context of the competition, [winning] means that I created what the judges saw as the most effective design solution for the icon. So gaining that kind of approval from Rocco, Lisa, and

Support your local horse show Contributed Report With the approaching “season of giving,” Southern States Cooperative is taking its support of the horse industry to a new level. Beginning in early November, Southern States will ask its top 1,000 horse feed customers to donate proof of purchase seals from bagged and bulk feeds to any of more than 400 non-profit horse associations and clubs who participate in the Southern States S.H.O.W. (Special Horse Organization Winner’s) Program. Local organizations participating in the S.H.O.W. Program receive cash rewards for proof of purchase seals from bags of Southern States, Legends and Triple Crown horse feeds, and those funds are used to support equestrian activities and events
that specifically benefit the horse industry. Rewards of 25 cents for each proof of purchase seal and $10 for each ton of bulk feed are paid by the cooperative directly to the organization. “Our top one thousand customers represent more than 630,000 bags of feed and nearly 2,400 tons of bulk feed annually,” said Jim Moore, vice president of the Southern States Feed Division. “That translates into more than 180,000 dollars which could go a long way toward supporting these non-profit horse organizations.” “No other feed company has supported the horse industry more than Southern States,” explained Jessica Lohman, livestock marketing manager for the cooperative. “We developed the S.H.O.W. Program to provide all
non-profit horse associations and clubs with their very own sponsorship tools.” Response to the program from non-profit organizations has been positive. “We count on the proceeds from the S.H.O.W. Program to assist us in our yearly activities and programs,” said Scott Mallory, president of the Kentucky Thoroughbred Farm Managers Club. “The generosity of the farms who participate in this with their proof of purchase seals and the financial support of Southern States is vital to our organization.” For more information about donating to S.H.O.W. Program clubs and organizations visit www.southernstates.com/ SHOW or your local Southern States feed dealer.

Goochland rallies past Cougars in opener, 70-63 Early Bulldog lead turns into battle down the stretch By JP Beauchamp Special Correspondent
In their first game of the season (due to the extended football run), the Goochland Bulldogs pulled out a home victory against the visiting Nottaway Cougars (2-5, 1-2 James River) 70-63. Goochland (1-0, 1-0) came out strong on Friday night but then were forced to rally after forfeiting a 13-point first quarter lead. “We were really rusty, and the first game definitely showed,” said Bulldogs’ head coach Preston Gordon. “You could definitely tell that Nottoway had played some games before.” Still, Gordon was pleased with his team’s effort. “They did a great job getting up and down the court,” he said. “They did a tremendous job attacking the rim.” The fast and furious pace was set by the Cougars, which is characteristic for the team. “That’s the way we try to play…That’s the way we practice,” said Nottoway head coach Reginald Johnson. “We try to get that up-tempo game and unfortunately tonight we couldn’t keep up the tempo we wanted to.” Despite the pace, Goochland broke out to a 13-point lead in the first quarter and Nottoway only trimmed four off that count by halftime, 37-28. But by the end of the third quarter the Cougars outscored the Bulldogs 23-13 to take the lead, 51-50. Nottoway’s aggressiveness combined with contentment by the Bulldogs to turn the tide of the game. “We kind of got lackadaisical and complacent

Above: Playing against Nottoway, Goochland’s Harry Talmage (30) had an off night shooting but he made up for it in every other phase of his game, finishing the night with 8 points, 16 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 assists and 3 blocks. with the way we were playing,” Gordon said. “We didn’t have a whole lot of energy like I thought and a lot of it has to do with getting our basketball legs underneath of us with some of those football guys; cause some of those guys are very key players for us.” Nottaway’s Deontre Anderson also played a part, keeping the pressure on the Bulldogs with 19 points and 10 rebounds in the contest. Goochland was hampered early when 6’3” junior center Josh Hayden got into foul trouble and had to sit out most of the second half. Hayden still managed to come up with two rebounds, one steal, one assist, one block and eight points, including a run-out dunk that brought the gym to its feet. “Josh Hayden is one of our go-to guys,” Gordon said. “We as a team were disappointed that he got in early foul trouble; but he’s learning from that and I know that he’s going to learn from those mistakes tonight. He’s going to be an offensive threat as well as a defensive threat. The monster dunk that
he had was great getting the crowd into it.” Demonstrating speed and athleticism at point, junior Cornelius “Ceejay” Johnson put up 20 points for the Bulldogs, going five-of-six on free throws and connecting on his only 3-pointer. Johnson came up with six assists, and two steals, but on the downside also turned over the ball seven times against Nottoway’s pressure defense. Goochland’s turnovers contributed significantly to the closeness of the game but Gordon was willing to accept them. “Turnovers…twentyfive…which is tough to swallow,” he said. “But, first game… we had sixteen assists. So, I look at that in a different way. We had some really nice passes that we couldn’t handle. But the chemistry will come and I think with time we got a pretty solid ball club.” Cool heads and Cougar turnovers in the fourth quarter helped the Dogs’ regain their composure and pull out a victory. Johnson was somewhat

frustrated by the fact that Nottoway really did not do anything different to get back into the game. “That’s been the story of our season,” he said. “When we beat Colonial Heights we were down sixteen and came back. When we beat Blue Stone, we were down sixteen and came back. For some reason we start slow and then we get it together in the third or fourth quarter. We make a good run; and unfortunately tonight we couldn’t get enough together to get over the hump.” Though Goochland 6’2” senior Harry Talmage went two-for-15 from the floor, he contributed in every other way, coming up with a total of 16 rebounds, five steals, three assists, and three blocks on the night. “Harry Talmage [was] amazing on the boards,” Gordon said. “I think he had sixteen rebounds. That’s pretty remarkable. He did a very nice job. I’m very proud of him.” Freshman Alec Crepps (8 points), in his debut appearance, had a decent showing
including a critical 3-pointer that helped turn the tide for Goochland in the final quarter. “I wish he would have knocked down the first 3pointer,” Gordon smiled. “He did a nice job. He gave us a great three in the fourth quarter. In the third quarter he got fouled on that 3-pointer and knocked down two or three, so we were really proud of him. I think he got his hands full on defense down low; but overall, he did a very nice job for us tonight.” Gordon was proud of how his seniors kept their composure late in the game. “When it got tight and we lost the lead; they fought through the adversity and the seniors did a very nice job holding that team together. “I thought we had quiet leadership in guys like Nathan Mattox,” Gordon said. “He did a phenomenal job. I don’t think he came out in the third quarter. Fourth quarter we gave him a quick breather but he went right back in. Evan Smith (12 points, 5 rebounds) did a very nice job. He’s going
to continue to be a force on offense.” This weekend Goochland hosts the first of what they hope to be an annual Holiday Tournament. On Friday at 6 p.m. Nelson will take on West Point. Goochland will then play Louisa at 8 p.m. Saturday’s consolation game is scheduled for 6 p.m. and at 8 p.m. the two Friday night winners will face off in the championship. Cadets on the rise with 7-0 start to season By Thomas C. Dozier Special Correspondent
When the Benedictine High School Wrestling team hits the mat for action this season it will be wearing a green warmup T-shirt with the team motto emblazoned in white letters on the back – “Bellum has risen.” The phrase, which was adopted by the coaching staff, means the war has risen and for the Cadets, it has risen in a big way. After seven matches this season, the upstart Cadets are 7-0 with wins over Group AAA teams Varina, Clover Hill, Douglas Freeman and Thomas Dale; all traditionally solid wrestling teams over the past two decades. Benedictine opened the season in a dual meet at home in front of the Cadet Corps while the Cadets routed both Varina 50-21 and Covenant 72-10 on that festive day. They followed that up with four wins in the Colonial Heights Classic – Benedictine 48, Clover Hill 33; Benedictine 72 Meadowbrook 6; Benedictine 46 Thomas Dale 27 and Benedictine 56 Douglas Freeman 24 to take third place. Then the Cadets took the ReMax Ram Classic at Lafayette High School in Williamsburg. This past Wednesday, Benedictine needed a lastevent (160-pound class) pin by junior Ulysses Avgeros over Glen Allen sophomore Kyle Lythgoe as the visiting Cadets edged the Jaguars 39-34 to run their season win total to seven. “We are working with a skeleton crew tonight [at Glen Allen],” said Benedictine fourth-year coach Ryan Hall. “We have got a lot of good wrestlers but it is going to take a lot of hard work for us to get where we want to be.” As Hall looked into the crystal ball, he likes what he sees about this group. “The sky is the limit,” the

28-year-old Hall added. “Over half the team is reaching Prep National Qualifiers. We compete in all weight divisions and we have a few individuals who are very good wrestlers. “But we must improve on the simple things,” he added. “We were missing some things tonight, but I feel confident we are only going to get better. We want to stay sharp and finish strong. “Give Glen Allen credit, coach [John] Marshall is doing the same thing for that program that we are trying to do here,” Hall said. “We kind of knew it was going to be a titfor-tat match, but had no idea it would come down to the pin. It was a total team effort and displayed our ability to cover come adversity.” On the evening, of which Benedictine forfeited matches at 132, 220 and 285, the visitors overcame a 22-14 deficit to top the Jaguars getting victories from Avgeros, Cabell Thoma (170), Ralph Toomey (182), Jordan Hagood (106), Zach
Walker (120), Braxton Walker (126), Shane Corbin (138) and Sam Toomey (152). Corbin, an all-state performer and second team AllMetro selection, might have turned in the most impressive effort after moving up from the 132-pound class to 138. Despite some nagging injuries he recorded a nifty pin of Theo Prestia with 10 seconds left in the second period to pull the Cadets within one point, 2827, and shifted the momentum in the visitors’ favor. Corbin, a junior, heads up the junior-laden team for Benedictine. Of the 21 roster wrestlers, nine come from the Class of 2014 including Avergos, Corbin, Thoma, Tanner Bridges, Sam Toomey, Colin Bohanon, Conor Fogarty, Braxton Walker and Wes Camet. The seniors on the team that provide the leadership are Austin Hague, Daniel Parrish, Ralph Toomey and Colin Ventrell. They are joined on the roster four sophomores James
Hagood, Jordan Hagood, Zach Walker and Brad Freda. Other wrestlers include Matt Brown, Chris McGee, Tristan Howard and Jimmy Smith to round out the stout roster. An interesting footnote is the team has three sets of brothers. The Cadets have a heavy dose of returning grapplers with some newcomers who will have an impact this season. The Catholic school team, which participates in the Cavalier Athletic Conference, has finished at least a place better than the previous over the past three years at the VISAA tournament under Hall’s tutelage. Two things have proved beneficial for the Cadets this season: 1. The opening match held in front of the corps of Cadets created a buzz on campus. 2. The off-season and strength work at G.O.A.L. Performance Training on Bethlehem Road in Henrico County run by Craig Coles.
“The atmosphere is getting better,” Hall said. “And the first match in front of the entire corps was exciting. Benedictine is known for some of its other sports but we now feel like wrestling is getting noticed and it has created a lot of excitement on campus. The kids got a lot out of that first match.” One can’t help but notice the technique of wrestlers in three consecutive matches at 120 (Zach Walker), 126 (Braxton Walker) and 132 (Corbin) levels, not to mention skills of Ralph Toomey, Thoma and Avergos in the heavier sessions. “We have good wrestlers and we want to compete with the big boys,” Hall said. “In the long run it will only make us better and will determine who we finish. But to get where we want to be we need everyone to step up and it is all about team commitment.” According to Hall, the Benedictine wrestling program focuses on technique, speed,
strength, and conditioning which provides a wrestler to improve throughout the season and for the future in the sport. None was more evident than last year when Michael Logan proudly captured the school’s first state title. Logan, a four-year letter-winner, is now wrestling at VMI and is indicative of how far the program has come. All signs point to the Cadets an upswing on the line graph of the team’s march toward the VISSAA Wrestling Championships on Feb. 15-16. Benedictine 39, Glen Allen 34 106: Hagood (B) d.
