Goochland schools review security after Newtown tragedy

File Photo by Ken Odor

New Goochland Superintendent of Schools James Lane said last week that Goochland parents want the school system to take a proactive approach to security.

By Ben Orcutt Special Correspondent

As the nation continues to mourn the victims of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting massacre in Newtown, Conn., public school systems across the country are taking a closer look at how best to protect children. “In Goochland, we maintain that we have safe schools,” Superintendent Dr. James F. Lane said during the School Board’s Dec. 18 workshop meeting, just days after 20-year-old Adam Lanza shot his mother dead in the home they shared in Newtown and proceeded to Sandy Hook Elementary where he murdered 20 pupils and six staff members before taking his own life. “We at all times try to follow the best practices that’s shared with us by law enforcement and certainly this week the U.S. Secretary of Education and the Governor have given us guidance, which we’ve taken that guidance

into account,” Lane continued. “We review our crisis plan annually. In the state of Virginia we’re required to do that. Dr. [Peter M.] Gretz as our assistant superintendent of operations will be primarily in charge of the committee that reviews that every year and brings to the Board for approval. And so that process is already in place for us, but we’re going to continue to take that guidance into account and I want families to know that this is something that we take seriously.” There is a school resource officer at the middle school-high school complex and all three of Goochland’s elementary schools have buzzer-entry systems in place, Lane said. “We do lockdown drills on a regular basis,” he added. “In addition to active-shooter type of tragedies, we also do fire drills and tornado drills and we feel like we’re prepared for safety. We’re certainly open to any best practices. Parents have been e-mailing us throughout the week and we want to thank you for all the suggestions you brought forward and please know that as the months ahead come forward we’re going to continue to look at this, but we’re going to do everything in our power to keep your children safe.” Lane also spoke about Gov. Bob McDonnell’s announcement of a statewide review of school security. “All school principals are required to submit a survey every year that indicates which type of school safety measures that we have in place and so we report those things regularly to the state,” Lane said. “As I read [McDonnell’s announcement], what’s going to happen now is the Governor’s office – more likely the Virginia Department of Education – is going to work with each superintendent to share feedback on what they’ve learned in those surveys and give us some guidance on best practices…If there’s an area that they would like to see us improve they’ll let us know. We have not been given a timeline. All that’s been announced is that that’s going to be an executive order and he’s creating a task force also to bring best practices into play. That’s the second piece of the announcement.” Following the School Board meeting, Lane said that the weekend of the Sandy Hook massacre Goochland put information on the Internet about school safety see Security > page 3A

Goodwill to open new store Jan. 10 By Ken Odor jodor@goochlandgazette.com

It took awhile, but Goodwill Industries is finally ready to open a retail store in Goochland County. After almost two years of work, the company will open its retail store and donation center at 1650 St. Mathews Lane on Thursday, Jan. 10 at 9 a.m. “Our stores are fundamental in our ability to deliver our mission services. We are pleased to offer Goochland residents a convenient way to support our mission while stretching their dollar,” said Charles D. Layman, President and CEO of Goodwill in a news release. Layman said last week that Goodwill never gave up on a Goochland store even after the Planning Commission recommended against approval of a store at Bellview Gardens just east of the current site after strong neighbor-

hood opposition. “The biggest thing is that it’s a growing county,” said Layman. “Access is great. We think it will work exceptionally well,” he said. The 17,500 square foot store cost almost $3 million to build and will employ have about 25 full and part-time employees. see Goodwill > page 4A

When the 2013 session of the Virginia General Assembly convenes on Wednesday, 13year-old Alexandria Herrera of Goochland will be one of the pages for the House of Delegates. “I’m really looking forward to it, Alexandria said during a recent interview at the home she shares with her parents, Jose and Rebecca, and older sisters Victoria, 21, and Erica, 18. Alexandria had somewhat of “an inside track of what to expect as a page because Erica served as a page in the House of Delegates during the 2008 session, their father said. “It just seemed like a lot of fun, Alexandria said. “[Erica] kind of encouraged me to do it. A freshman at Old Dominion University, Erica said she worked in records when she served as a page, but added that she also spent time on the floor of the House of Delegates serving the delegates to whom she was assigned. An 8th-grader at Goochland Middle School, Alexandria said she had to be recommended by her teachers, guidance counselor and school principal. There are 39 pages in each chamber of the General Assembly, plus a head page for each house, Alexandria said. “What they look at is a well-rounded student because you have to be able to do your academics on your own, so you have to be independent because you have to keep up with your studies, Mrs. Herrera said. “Even though you’re not in school, you still have to keep up with your studies. Pages work from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, Alexandria said, adding that the upcoming session is slated to end on Feb. 23. “My teachers will e-mail me my work, she said. “There’s a mandatory study hall from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Alexandria is an A-B student, according to her mother. “So we expect her grades to remain the same and for her to study, her mother said. Pages are assigned roommates and stay at the Omni Hotel in downtown Richmond, Alexandria said. They are paid $135 per week and receive a weekly food allowance of $125, she added. Parents pick the pages up on Fridays and have to bring them back to Richmond by 6 p.m. on Sunday, Mrs. Herrera said. Alexandria said she has to report to the House of Delegates chamber on Sunday for orientation. There also is an orientation for parents.

Alexandria Herrera, a 13-year-old 8th-grader at Goochland Middle School, holds the manual she will use as a page at the General Assembly.

Alexandria received her page acceptance letter after Thanksgiving. “I was just happy, like really happy, she said. Her parents are proud that she was able to follow in Erica’s footsteps, they said. “I would have to say I was probably more nervous with Alex’s process than Erica’s because Alex was so stressed and she was making me stressed, Mrs. Herrera said. ‘But this really meant a lot to Alex so I was so proud. When she got the envelope, she was so nervous she couldn’t open it. As a page, she will be required to wear a navy blue blazer with a white blouse and grey or navy blue pants, or a skirt, Alexandria said. Although she is a sergeant with the Division of Capitol Police, Mrs. Herrera said both of her daughters were selected as pages based on their own merit. Alexandria was endorsed by Sen. Thomas A. Garrett Jr., R-22nd and Del. R. Lee Ware Jr., R-65th, who both represent Goochland in the General Assembly, Mrs. Herrera said. Ware interviewed her in his office, Alexandria said. District 1 Supervisor Susan F. Lascolette and District 1 School Board Member Michael E. Payne interviewed Alexandria prior to a town hall meeting, Mrs. Herrera said, adding that both wrote letters of recommendation on Alexandria’s behalf. “So she’s going there representing Goochland – putting Goochland on the map, Mrs. Herrera said.

Company donates to food banks Contributed Report

Dominion is donating an additional $225,000 to area food banks and food pantries to help feed people in need during the holidays, bringing this year’s total to more than $425,000. “The ongoing weak economy has put many out of work and in need of basic necessities such as food, shelter and medical care,” said Thomas F. Farrell II, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Dominion. “As we celebrate our blessings during this holiday season, we also must feel the plight of those facing hunger.” The grants are being made through The Dominion Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Dominion

Resources, one of the nation’s largest energy producers. Foundation grants are funded by shareholder dollars and are not borne by customers. Grants are being awarded to: Virginia; District of Columbia; Maryland; the Midwest; New England; New York; North Carolina; Ohio; Pennsylvania; Texas, and West Virginia. A detailed list is available at: www.dom. com/about/community/pdf/ 2012food-banks.pdf An example of these contributions is a grant to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, in Norfolk, to support the Mobile Pantry Program. The mobile pantry “hits the road” providing much-needed food, at no charge, directly to vulnerable populations such as children, seniors, and those

with limited mobility. Dominion and The Dominion Foundation’s total giving is expected to reach more than $20 million this year. The company is proud that its employees average approximately 150,000 volunteer hours annually to various charitable and community programs designed to improve life in the localities where the company operates its energy facilities. Dominion is one of the nation’s largest producers and transporters of energy. Dominion operates one of the nation’s largest natural gas storage systems and serves retail energy customers in 15 states. Security continued from > page 1A and also sent letters home the following Monday and Tuesday informing parents of what safety measures the school system has in place. “The parents have suggested…they want us to continue to review and just make sure our schools are safe and they want us to take a proactive approach, not a reactive approach,” Lane said. “I think everybody’s just in mourning and the response of the school system so far has been to assure parents that we have safe schools and that we’ll continue to do things that make our schools safe,” said District 2 School Board Member W. Kevin Hazzard. School Board Chairman Elizabeth A. Hardy, who represents District 4, said she also has received inquiries about the level of security in county schools. “Well I think people are

Hardy

concerned and they want to know that we’re looking at it and we were as Dr. Lane said very proactive with our communications letting people know what it is we do to keep people safe in our schools and that we review the plan annually and continue to look for best practices to shore up if and where we need to,” she said. The Connecticut shooting is a reminder of the mass murder that occurred at Virginia Tech in 2007, Lane said. “You know certainly all of these incidents are heartbreaking and the one that happened at

Hazzard

Virginia Tech hit a little bit more close to home as many of the people that were in the schools that I worked in at the time knew folks that were involved in that so I think personally for Virginians that one may have hit a little closer to home, but certainly that this occurred at an elementary school is heartbreaking and being a parent of a 3-year-old who sends my son to pre-school every day I just can’t even imagine what they’re going through and we’re all thinking about what we can do to support that community at this time,” Lane said.

Goochland County was honored earlier this month for once again achieving the highest voter turnout of any state locality in the fall election. On Monday, Dec. 17, in the House Chamber of the State Capitol, at the formal convening of the Electoral College, State Board of

Elections Chairman Charlie Judd gave special recognition to Goochland County, which had an 87.44 percent turnout in the November election, the highest percentage participation of active voters in The Commonwealth. Goochland County also had the highest percentage participation in 2008 with 85.1 percent turnout. On hand to witness the Electors cast Virginia’s 13 votes for President Barack Obama of Illinois, were Debbie Hall, precinct chief at Three Square, Electoral Board

Vice Chair Melinda Sledd, Hadensville Chief William Stapleton, CAP Chief Bob Swinson, Goochland Precinct One Chief Kay Higgins, General Registrar Frances Ragland, Manakin Chief Wanda Taylor, Chairman Judd, Sandy Hook Assistant Chief Jean Harris, Blair Road Chief Bob Gilliam, Electoral Board Secretary Robin Lind, Goochland Precinct Two Chief Deanna Allen, Kitty Williams (substituting for Fife Chief Venna Brown) and Centerville Assistant Chief Godfrey Pinn.

• With their bare hands with little or no chance of effectively disarming or disabling the intruder? • Or with some sort of weapon that they had been lawfully and professionally trained to use, that might allow them to stop a potentially tragic incident? I think the answer is fairly clear for most of us but you’d never know it after the blistering response Gov. Bob McDonnell received last week when he raised the question of whether teachers and school administrators might be armed. He was roundly castigated by some members of the General Assembly, most notably Sen. Donald McEachin, D-9, who basically called McDonnell’s mere raising the possibility irresponsible. It’s been several decades since I had a child in school and back in those days, madmen didn’t arrive at school to commit mayhem. I never worried about my son’s safety for a minute, other than maybe him getting a black eye from a school-yard fracas. It was a different world then.

Two scenarios Let’s suppose you are a parent. And let’s suppose you have a youngster in school. Suppose, heaven forbid, a raving lunatic with a weapon gained access to the school your child attends. How would you wish your school’s administrators and teachers to respond?

OPINION: Editorial, Letters to the Editor

But if I had a child in school today, I would favor option two mentioned above. If the worst happened and my child was in danger, I would want the adults charged with his safety to have the ability to defend him and themselves. I do not consider this an irresponsible position but, rather, just about the only logical one a parent could have. Another alternative would be to have some sort of armed security at every school, certainly a hugely expensive proposition. Would it be worth it? You bet it would be and I’d pay higher property taxes in a heartbeat to finance it. Even now that I have no kids in school I’d still gladly pay so that other parents’ children would be safer. Of course, school officials all over the country are wrestling with the complex problem of making their students and buildings as safe as possible and there are no cut and dried simple answers. Our story on page one offers some thoughts from Goochland County Public Schools Superintendent James Lane and two School Board members. We’d like to know what you think too. Drop us a line at letters to the editor and let us know your ideas on how school safety might be improved. -Ken Odor

Letters to the Editor Writer sure new gun laws will be passed but where will it lead? The recent events in Connecticut have produced a flurry of responses and discussions of new legislation for at least certain types of weapons and accessories. The pundits and politicians promising to take actions. Can one legislate poor judgment? No doubt many of our politicians have excelled at the latter but seriously can one prevent a person, who for all the right reasons, at least in their minds, does things that have consequences that were not intended and if foretold would have gone a different path? The history of humanity is replete with violence, including actions that are truly evil and massacres (e.g. Rwanda, Pol Pot in Cambodia, Japanese atrocities in China in the last century, etc.) Historians have estimated that in the last 3,500 years there have been less than 150 years of no significant conflict. We have the potential for great evil against ourselves. No law will change that. To speak of culture and values is to speak of things at 30,000 feet not on ground level. I am sure that new laws will be passed, to at least give the impression of action, no matter that nothing will be fundamentally changed. We are responsible for all that unfolds, not simply the weapons, not simply the mentally deranged, look around you, though the scene may appear pastoral it is fraught with danger and uncertainty and there are very few things that we

can do that will not have a series of unintended consequences. Armed guards in schools work until someone attacks school buses, where does all this lead? Richard Carchman Columbia

Deer donations down but need for venison is up Venison provides low-fat, high-protein nutrition for food banks and other feeding programs, but donations to Hunters for the Hungry are down. “We are seeing a tremendous need for deer meat and our donations are down by 60,000 pounds right now,” said Gary Arrington, special projects coordinator for the nonprofit organization. Based in Bedford County, Hunters for the Hungry was formed in 1991 to donate

venison to nonprofit groups that provide food to those in need. Hunters and farmers donate deer meat, and participating processors cut and package the venison that’s provided to food banks, shelters, feeding programs and churches at no charge. “Some groups are saying they have three times the people coming in for assistance of all kinds, but the biggest need is food,” Arrington said. “If everyone pitches in these last weeks of hunting season, it will help us meet the demand throughout the remainder of this year and the first quarter of 2013.”

Donations are down this year due to a number of factors, said the organization’s program director Laura Newell-Furniss. “Above-average temperatures and drought conditions have made it difficult for hunting dogs to pick up deer scents,” she said. Additionally, some people can’t afford to hunt or can’t afford to take time off from work. Other hunters report that they’re not seeing the quantity of deer they have in the past. For additional information about Hunters for the Hungry, call 800-352-4868.

Their songs feature a handful of acoustic instruments and tightly layered harmonies. TAURUS - Apr 21/May 21 Taurus, enjoy an active week ahead that includes a very busy social schedule. Instead of trying to swim against the tide, let it take you along.

LEO - Jul 23/Aug 23 Secrets have a funny way of catching up with you, Leo. Although it can be hard to be honest, upcoming situations will work out much more easily if you are.

Young kickers gave Goochland a leg up in title run By Charlie Leffler cleffler@goochlandgazette.com

2865669-01

While many Goochland football fans will most likely remember the Bulldogs’ rushing offense, stellar defense and accurate passing game contributing to the 2012 state championship victory, the unsung hero of the contest was the play of the special teams. By recovering two of three onside kicks and connecting on five-of-six extra points, the Goochland special teams played a big part in demoralizing the potent Essex team. “The emphasis we placed on special teams, we really felt like that was going to be the difference maker in that game and fortunately it turned out that way,” said Goochland head coach Joe Fowler. “Part of our plan was to make Essex face as much adversity as we could early in the game because we didn’t know how they’d react,” Fowler said. “When we got to our onsides kick, we were already up, I think 14-0…I don’t want to say it was the nail in the coffin, because it was only the second quarter,

The Goochland kicking team had huge shoes to fill coming into the 2012 season as they followed in the footsteps of Colby Cooke and Thomas Meadows. However, Ricky Gordon (29) left, Javier Moreno (13) middle, and Raleigh Marria, right, turned into the surprise component in the Bulldogs’ title run.

but you could definitely see their kids’ heads drop and it made them doubt how the game was going to turn out for them.” Coming into the season, the Goochland kicking game held the lowest expectations to contribute, not because of the players on the current roster but the two that graduated. At the end of the 2011 campaign, kicker Colby Cooke and punter Thomas Meadows went out as arguably the best kicking

combo in the history of high school football anywhere. The two seniors both signed football scholarships with BCS schools. Cooke signed with Vanderbilt in the SEC while Meadows committed to Purdue in the Big 10. “I talked to a lot of college coaches and none had ever heard of two Division I kickers in the same class at the same time,” Fowler said. Therefore the void for the Bulldogs to fill was enormous considering none of the replacements had varsity experience. Sophomore Raleigh Marria and Javier Moreno spent the 2011 season on Goochland’s JV squad while kicker Ricky Gordon came to the team having never played football before. Knowing there was no way the newcomers could compete with the absence of Cooke and Meadows, the Goochland coaches looked towards a growth process from the incoming players. “We had a feeling of their abilities,” Fowler said. “We knew they would be consistent in what they did.” Though none of the trio had the physical talent

of Cooke or Meadows, the coaches hoped that with time and maturity they could grow into the same caliber of players. Coming into the season, Marria took on the role of place kicker while Moreno was the team’s punter and performed kickoff duties. There was no way to gradually work the newcomers into their respective roles. “You can’t ease a kicker in when they’re the best that you have,” Fowler said. “You’ve got to kick off the first play of the first game.” Likewise, Marria felt the pressure as the season began. “It was a little nervous,” he said of the season opener. “Definitely big shoes to fill.” Marria finished the season fourth on the team in scoring, averaging 4.2 points per game while connecting on 55 point after touchdowns. Like Marria, Moreno was nervous but also elated to be on the varsity squad. “When I started JV my first year, I was just horrible,” he said. However, over the course of his freshman year and the following summer that changed. “Coming into this season,

(the coaches) just liked how I was booming punts everywhere and I guess that’s when they had confidence in me and decided to keep me up and punt and kick.” On 19 punts, Moreno averaged 35.37 yards per kick with a long kick of 57 yards. Moreno also dropped five punts inside the 20 yard line. While Marria and Moreno had the experience of being tutored by Cooke and Meadows, Gordon did not. Gordon came into the season as a soccer player looking to fill a void. Because he had no football experience, Gordon gained it by taking on the kickoff duties for the Goochland JV squad. When Moreno went out to injury at the end of the regular season, the responsibly for kickoffs and field goals longer than 32 yards fell to Gordon. He was willing to do what he could to help the team. “I just thought that I needed to step up to the challenge because the other kicker was hurt,” he said. “I had to help them out.” Therefore, Gordon played the unlikely role as gamechanger in the state champi-

onship against Essex. Coming into the game, Goochland had attempted only one onside kick the entire season. That kick was performed by Marria with the special teams loaded to one side of the field. When Gordon took the field for Goochland’s onside kick in the state championship, it was out of a completely new formation with players spread across the line of scrimmage. Goochland recovered that onside kick—then the next as well. “I knew that us recovering a couple onside kicks would help us set up the offense,” Gordon said. “So we just had to out and let them know that we had the advantage.” It appeared they would get the ball back on a third onside kick but a penalty prevented the recovery. “One of our players grabbed it at nine yards instead of 10,” Gordon said. As the years pass, people will talk about 2012 as being the surprise state championship for Goochland, but no surprise was perhaps bigger or better than the play of Marria, Moreno and Gordon.

Harwood displayed unmatched dedication to team Goochland coach postponed brain surgery until after state championship By Dave Lawrence Special Correspondent

A

ny narrative of a football team’s season usually includes story lines about players’ coping with injuries or illness. This year, Goochland’s players were not aware of one such story featuring one of their coaches – defensive line coach Ed Harwood. Harwood noticed his peripheral vision getting blurry, and early in the season decided to get it checked out. After some exams and an MRI, he got news he did not want. He had a brain tumor, a benign meningioma, a tumor of the lining of the brain or spinal cord. His was a growth a bit bigger than a golf ball behind his eyes. It needed to come out but he was not going to let it interfere with the Bulldogs’ season. After discussing the matter with his wife and his doctor, Singh Sahni of Neurosurgical Associates in Richmond – Harwood decided to schedule surgery for the first week of December when the regular season was over. “I’ve been coaching a lot of years. My wife has been around and she knew what I was thinking,” Harwood said. “We decided that we would wait. The doctor said no problem.” Several of his fellow coaches initially thought he was nuts for waiting. “I thought he was crazy, but I also knew that the medical profession wouldn’t have let him do that if they thought it would have put them at risk” said Goochland head football coach Joe Fowler. “That was some comfort, but I still thought he was crazy for not wanting to get that thing out as soon as possible. He’s an incredibly dedicated person and he wanted to finish out the season.” While Harwood quietly let his

fellow coaches know about his diagnosis, they withheld that information from the team. “He’s very well liked among all the kids. We didn’t want it to affect then negatively at any point,” said defensive coordinator Dan Summitt. “It wasn’t the coaching staff’s wish, it was his wish for them not to know, and of course we respected that.” Anyone unaware of Harwood’s brain tumor would have noticed anything amiss. “He’s such a tough guy, he’s such a kind guy, you couldn’t tell anything was wrong,” said wide receivers coach Jonathan Smith. “He didn’t miss a beat. The way he carried himself, you’d think he was a perfectly healthy man.” Patrick Gordon, coach of the defensive backs as well as the kickoff and kickoff return teams, said Harwood avoided scheduling doctor’s appointments during practices

“The doctor actually called me and said, ‘I’m rescheduling this because I think you guys will do well.” ED HARWOOD Goochland defensive line coach

and kept up a grueling daily schedule. “He was always there at practice, every day, taking care of the defensive line – that was his group. He took care of a lot of things behind the scenes, the uniforms and things like that,” Gordon said. “He was there late. He was there early in the morning to get things done, to make sure everything was ready for practice, to make sure everything was ready for games.” Though Harwood had originally scheduled his surgery for Dec. 5, as

the date approached he got a suggestion for a postponement from an unusual quarter – his surgeon. “The doctor actually called me and said, ‘I’m rescheduling this because I think you guys will do well,’ ” Harwood said. “I went, ‘What?’ This is a neurosurgeon, you know. He called and rescheduled it for the Wednesday after the state final. And he was right.” The team learned of Harwood’s condition the Monday after they won the state championship. “You could see some jaws drop.

You could see genuine concern,” said quarterbacks coach Joel Gray. “He’s kind of a grandfatherly figure with those young men.” Harwood has been resting at home since the surgery, but somewhat antsy, too – he said he would love to get out of the house and go somewhere other than a hospital or doctor’s office. He will undergo follow up treatment in January. He does not regret delaying surgery until after the state championship game. For that reason, Harwood said this season was extra special. “There’s a Proverbs 27:17 about steel sharpens steel, but men sharpen men. I would say that to my groups every day. ‘Go out there and push each other. Push them and push them. It’s you, men, who are making them,’ ” Harwood said. “It was amazing what happened.” Jim Ridolphi contributed to this story.

Eastern Section quarterfinals. Goochland senior linebacker Nathan Adams provided the biggest defensive play for the Bulldogs (10-2) when he blew through the Buckingham line and blocked a punt, setting up Jefferson’s second touchdown. Adams made his presence felt on offense as well, hauling in a pass from freshman Reid Chenault and bulling into the end zone in the waning seconds of the first half. It proved to be the winning score. Mitchell Brice led Goochland with 68 yards on 11 carries. NOV. 23: GROUP A, DIVISION 2 EASTERN SECTION Goochland 63, King William 36 Goochland showcased its running attack as it rolled past King William in the Division 2 Eastern Section semifinals. “I’m real proud of the way we were offensively,” Bulldogs coach Joe Fowler said. “I thought we ran the ball extremely well. We’d like to think we are built for the playoffs. We want to be able to line up and run the ball.” Goochland’s rushing attacked featured six runners and totaled 498 yards. Mitchell Brice had 214 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs (112), and David Dyer had 131 yards with two touchdowns. King William (11-2) quarterback Freeman McPhearson was involved in all six of the Cavaliers’ touchdowns: three rushing, two passing and one receiving and accounted for 508 allpurpose yards.

Goochland scored on every possession save for one and had no punts. Its defense also forced the Cavaliers off the field on downs to stifle drives, as King William was 4-for-8 on fourth-down conversions. DEC. 1: GROUP A, DIVISION 2 SEMIFINAL Goochland 35, Wilson Memorial 0 Goochland’s running game was held in check and out of the end zone in the VHSL Group A, Division 2 semifinal at Wilson Memorial. The passing game and defense, however, supplied touchdowns as Goochland advanced to the state championship game, shutting out the Hornets. “It’s definitely a great opportunity to reach the pinnacle of the season,” Goochland coach Joe Fowler said. “That’s what we strive for every year. Coming into this season, we had a lot of young kids and I don’t know if many people thought we could do this. We’re proud of the opportunity.” One such player is freshman quarterback Reid Chenault, who completed 3-of-6 passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns, including an 80-yard strike to Mitchell Brice. Goochland got pressure on Wilson Memorial quarterback Brandon Gochenour, coming up with sacks, knockdowns and rushed decisions at key moments on third and fourth downs to end drives and kill any momentum that Wilson Memorial was able to generate. see Look back >page 7

Nathan Mattox returned a fumble for a touchdown for the Bulldogs (12-2). DEC. 8: GROUP A, DIVISION 2 FINAL Goochland 41, Essex 14 The Goochland Bulldogs’ bus broke down near Roanoke as they were making their way to Salem City Stadium for the Group A, Division 2 state championship football game. Instead of seeing it as a bad omen, Bulldogs coach Joe Fowler saw it as a teaching opportunity. “Coach said, ‘The one who blocks out all the distractions, that’s the team that’s going to win,’” Goochland running back Mason Engel said. “And that’s what we did.” Not even a broken-down bus could stop the Bulldogs (13-2) as they accumulated 381 rushing yards in a victory over Essex. This is the Bulldogs’ second Group A, Division 2 title. The first came in 2006. “This is a very special group of young men,” Fowler said. “To face adversity as we have all year, and to have it end like this is magical.” After the two teams exchanged threeand-outs to start the game, Goochland received the ball and got its running game going. The 10-play drive was exclusively runs, including six from sophomore quarterback Jordan Jefferson, which ended with him in the end zone. From there, the Bulldogs ran away from the Trojans (14-1), capitalizing on Essex mistakes and penalties, and leaning on a running game that has been successful all season. Jefferson rushed 16 times for 110 yards and a touchdown, and Mitchell Brice had 15 carries for 102 yards and two TDs. David Dyer added 60 yards and two touchdowns, and Connor Saunders had 36 yards and two touchdowns in the Bulldogs’ attack. Goochland’s defense also came up big, holding the explosive Trojans to just 190 yards and their lowest point total of the season. Essex entered the contest averaging 38 points per game. —Richmond Times Dispatch

Title evokes memories of 2006 for former Bulldogs 2012 was not the first rodeo for GHS By Jim Ridolphi Special Correspondent

Winning the 2012 Division 2 state championship was a new and unique experience for every player on the Goochland football team. For others, the victory evoked memories of 2006 when the Bulldogs defeated Giles 28-14 for their first state title. Bryan Jordan entered this year’s contest as a Bulldog assistant coach, but in 2006 Jordan was directing a high powered offense that included the likes of DJ Coles and John Hicks. “In some ways, this team reminds me of us — the way they play as a team and their determination are similar to the way our team was,” Jordan said recently. Looking at it through a coach’s eye, Jordan also saw some differences. “They don’t have the studs like DJ and John Hicks, but they are strong and win as a team,” he said. Jordan followed up his career at Goochland with a brief stay at Virginia Tech and an eventual standout career on the baseball diamond for Randolph Macon. Now he’s back in Goochland pursuing a dream of coaching. “It’s something I’ve always wanted to do,” Jordan said. “This is a great place to start my career, and some of the people around here still remember the 2006 season. Jordan is looking forward to coaching the Goochland Middle School baseball team in the spring. Another major component of that 2006 championship team was Coles, who returns to Virginia Tech next fall for his fifth year after suffering a season-ending injury earlier this year. the bulk of Bulldog yards on offense during the 2006 campaign and was also a standout linebacker. Coles made the short trip from Blacksburg to Salem to see this edition of the Bulldogs capture the crown. The Bulldogs are never far from Coles’ heart, and he knows what this year’s success means for the team and a community. “It was very good for our program, our school, our community, everything,” Coles said. “It was the second one we’ve won. We went there last year, we came up short, but we came back again this year

and it was a great win for the team, everybody.” The Hokies’ senior split end said this year’s team accomplished the task with young players and lacked the experience of the 2006 squad. “It’s a young team; they brought up a lot of guys from JV. We’ve got a lot of young guys making plays,” Coles said. “As a whole, for their confidence for years to come, it’s a really good win.” Even with the national accolades Coles has enjoyed at Va. Tech, the memories of that 2006 high school championship game in

Harrisonburg still resonates in his mind. “For us, it was more of a tight game in the first half,” he said. “We were down at half time, then came back and fought as a team and held them to maybe 40 yards in the second half.” He said the victory unified a community and was the culmination of years of work for a young group of players who started together in youth football. “The memories were good. We were the first team to ever win it and the whole community came out and supported us. It was a good thing,” Coles said. “One thing about that team was that we all played together from little league all the way up so it was very special for us.”

Goochland coaches provided the unnoticed teamwork By Dave Lawrence Special Correspondent

I

t’s hard to escape the observation that football is a team sport. At any given time, 22 players are on the field (unless someone in a uniform failed to pay attention) and those 11 offensive players and 11 defensive players have to support and work with their teammates. Their success or failure is witnessed by everyone in the stands. What is rarely observed by outsiders is the teamwork that occurs on the sidelines and in the press box among the head coach and his assistants. Without that teamwork, Goochland and its head coach, Joe Fowler, would not likely have been able to make it to the state championship two years in a row and finishing this year on top. “I’m a firm believer that you hire people you trust, then you have to trust them,” Fowler said. “We’ve got a very talented group of coaches who have a lot of experience and knowledge. … Everybody knows their role on the staff and we all take care of our jobs and do what we’re supposed to do. When you put all that together, it’s a recipe for success.” Fowler doubles as offensive coordinator with help from running back and punt team coach Alex Fruth, quarterbacks coach Joel Gray and wide receivers coach Jonathan Smith. Long-time assistant Dan Summitt serves as defensive coordinator, with Patrick Gordon serving as defensive back, kickoff and kickoff return coach and Ed Harwood coaching the defensive line. Summitt and Gordon were both on the staff during Goochland’s 2006 state championship season. Harwood is the most recent addition, joining the Bulldogs last year. Fowler’s style – in which the coaches know their jobs and are left to do them – filtered through the assistant coaches down to the players. “One of the words we threw around a few times was ‘Brother,’.” Summitt said. “Trust your brothers. We are all brothers on this football field. I’m going to do my job and I’m going to trust that you’ll do yours. If we do that and everybody does their job, then we get it done.” Last year, the Bulldogs’ “shot ourselves in the foot,” as Summitt said, in their 21-16 state championship loss to Gretna. “Last year, we failed to succeed on our perfect season. Our goal when walked and got our [second place] medals was to go forward and not fail again,” said Smith. “From

that moment on, we had told each other that as a team and as a coaching staff we were not going to fall short again. We were going to complete our tasks and win a state final game.” Even so, it took a while to realize they might have a chance at exorcising the specter of that defeat. “The Central-Lunenberg game we were fortunate that the ball bounced our way a little bit,” Fruth said. “But really the Buckingham game, the first time we played them – the goal-line stand – I think that’s when the realization was that we could be pretty darn good. I think that was the big defining moment of the season.” Harwood, who put off surgery to remove a benign brain tumor until after the season was over, tried to find ways to inspire all the

players, not just the ones who got most of the playing time on Friday nights. “You’ve got your starters, kids that play all the time,” Harwood said. “And then you have those kids who practice against those starters every day, and they don’t get in the game. But if you can connect with those kids and tell them, ‘Hey, your game day is Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday – you get three games a week to their one. When you go out on that field and practice against that first team all week, you push them. By you pushing them that makes that team better.’ … It was just amazing what happened.” But even as they began to feel good about their chances, the Bulldogs did not take success for granted. “Last year, on paper, none of us thought we could be beaten. Of course, we found out

otherwise in the title game,” Gray said. “The experience of last year’s trip to the title game made a big difference for this group. The seniors got really focused and knew what they wanted out of the season. It was a matter of dragging the young pups along.” By the time the horn sounded at the end to the Bulldogs 41-14 victory over Essex, the players felt like something they had not felt like before – state champions. But even Gordon felt something new. “In ‘06 I was up in the press box and I didn’t get to experience it on the sideline with them. … This year was different, obviously, being on the sideline,” Gordon said. “[Seeing] the reaction of the guys was a neat experience.”
